any times in life we have visions of an idea and then as the process unfolds various thoughts produce a different outcome. Well, here is Delta Living Pets, (formerly Purrfect Pets Magazine). Taking our time to get it not only right for what our vision is, but perfect enough to carry on something that is very near and dear to the heart. Our motto is F.L.A.R.E. which means foster, love, adopt, rescue, educate. So you will see a lot of content about the animals we love and or care for. This inaugural issue is dedicated to Carol Stone. Billie and his dog By Randy E. Cook
B
illy rose from his bed in a rush; his blankets scurried to the floor. He threw his Pajamas off and ran to the closet and put his clothes on for the day. Billy ran down the hallway of his one floor house and into the kitchen. His father yells to him that he needed to eat some breakfast. But Billy was out the door by the time his father finished that sentence. When Billy gets past the hedge blocking his house from the neighbor’s, his best friend in the world jumped towards him. Billy screams with excitement and his best friend, which was a neighborhood stray dog, was as excited as he was. They roll around in the grass for a minute and Billy tells him to come along and that they are going to go exploring. It’s a small town, so there is only so much to do, unless you were an explorer like Billy. Billy and the dog would go everywhere together. Since he was a stray, Billy figured he’d know all of the cool places to explore, like the old abandoned corn silos next to the railroad tracks. They would play for hours. Or they would walk down by the river and try and collect frogs and rocks, although his mother never liked that adventure too much because of the laundry that would have to be done. Sometimes at night, Billy would leave his window open and the dog would come in and 10

snuggle right by his back in bed. But he was always gone when Billy awoke in the morning. It was okay, because Billy knew his parents wouldn’t like a random stray dog they didn’t know in the house, let alone in Billy’s room. One particularly quiet and chilly fall day, Billy and the dog were exploring the town’s pumpkin patch. While Billy was chasing after the dog through the orange field, he trips over a vine and lost his balance. He falls forward and hits his head on one of the giant pumpkins green stem. The dog runs over and sniffs him for a minute and Billy doesn’t move. Finally, after a few minutes, Billy opens his eyes and tells the dog that his bump on his head hurts and that they should get home because he doesn’t feel too well. Billy goes home and tells his mom what had happened and how he got the bump. She puts him to bed and tells him that he needs to rest. Later that night as he was sleeping, his temperature began to rise. Concerned about him, his parents rushed him to the hospital. The dog watches from hedges of the house as they drive away to the hospital. Two days pass and Billy and his parents finally arrive home, the dog is still laying there in the hedges. The dog smells the air and can tell that something isn’t right with his master. The dog runs around to Billy’s window and watches the parents put Billy back into bed to rest.
A week passes, and the dog is still lying below his window sill. Finally, Billy has enough strength to walk to the window. He uses most of his energy to push the window open. Immediately, the dog jumps inside, begins sniffing and licking Billy. But he senses something again isn’t right with Billy. Billy sits down on the edge of the bed with him and tells him that he is sick, he will be visiting grandpa soon as to what his parents have told him and from what he understands. Both Billy and the dog were sad. They lay there with each other and cuddled until the sun set and all through the night. A couple of months pass by, and fall turns into winter. The snow began to fall and cover the ground with wet, white powder. Even so, the dog would still visit when he could. Billy was mostly restricted to his room anymore, he didn’t like being in the hospital too much, and it made him feel weird. He hadn’t been on an adventure in so long, he missed those days. One quiet evening, as the sky was weeping, Billy was resting with the dog on his bed, when his parents come into his room to check on him. Billy had forgotten to let the dog back out the window, but he was too weak to care right now. Billy for being so young knew that he was weaker and wanted to sleep more and more. Billy, gasping for more breaths, tells his
dad to take care of the dog when he’s gone, because he has taken care of him. His father looks at him and tells him that he doesn’t know what he is talking about. He hasn’t seen a dog at all and there wasn’t one in his room right now. Billy glances over and the dog is looking right at him with eyes that are teary eyed. The dog lays his head on Billy’s chest. Billy realizes that only he can see the dog and that he was there for a reason. His father looks around the room again and walks over to close the window because of the cold draft. A gust of wind rushes by him as he closes the window. Billy’s mother looks back at Billy and notices that he had stopped breathing. They knew that the moment was finally here. They both embraced Billy and wept for the loss of their only son. Shortly after the funeral, Billy’s dad was packing some things in his bedroom to store them in the attic. As he drops off a box in the attic, he comes across a box labeled DAD’S THINGS, and he opens it. Inside the box and sitting on top is a picture of his dad and his dog when he was Billy’s age. He began to smile as he noticed the dog next to his father looks like the dog Billy described that day in the pumpkin patch and realized that it was the same dog that befriended Billy. Tears lingered down his face. deltalivingpetsmag.com

I came “home” to cross over By Glenda Kugler
Glenda.deltalivingmag@gmail.com
M
y name is Sonny Bono, or at least that is what my foster mom named me. Probably because I was skin and bones, malnourished, and sick when I was picked up as a stray on the streets of Antioch, California. Since I am only 4 months old and I had no idea what life was really like on the streets when I got lost. Or wait…was I dumped? I don’t know. All I know is that it was very cold at night and I was always hungry. When the animal officers found me I was beginning to get sick. Yep. Parvo positive. Doesn’t anyone vaccinate their pets anymore? Not only that, how can a puppy such as me roam the streets, bones sticking out, and not one person notice or rescue me? Sad, isn’t it? When I was finally picked up and taken to the shelter I was so happy that someone noticed me. I had plenty of food and water, but I was feeling really sick. The shelter put a call out for a foster and this wonderful pet mom came forward in trying to 12
Summer/Fall 2019
nurture me back to health. What she didn’t really know is that I was too far gone nutritionally. I came to her house and was given a bath, medicine and a place I could call my own until I got better or a place to die. My foster mother was so sweet; she gave me lots of attention. I just looked at her with my pretty blue eyes, she knew, I could feel it that she understood how sick I really was. The first night was horrible I kept her up all night going to the bathroom and vomiting. Like a real mother she cleaned up after me, consoled me, told me she loved me. When the sun came up the next morning I was glad to be alive, but I felt so weak. The night was very rough on me. I really wished that I could have been found sooner so that this “mom” could show me what life of a dog really is. Once again I was trying to stay strong. As the day progressed, so did I. My mother kept doing vitals, injections, checking my gums. I just loved that she touched me as it was always in a caring way. Then as I started to sleep continuously
and all I could hear is my mom crying saying that she cursed the people who did this to me and that she loved me. Me? She loved me!!! Awe, this is what it is like to really be loved here on earth. She understood not to let me suffer anymore and as I rode to the emergency room I kept seeing all the colors of the rainbow even though I tried to listen for my mom’s voice. Then as I lay upon the table, the needle in my paw, my beautiful pet mom told me to watch out for all of her fur babies that have crossed over. Soon I had seen them all. Now I can run free too. Away from the human race that let me down, only to be shown love at the last moments of my life. Everything happens for a reason. This is why I, Sonny Bono came “home” to cross over. dlm PLEASE REPORT ANY LOST, STOLEN, STRAY, OR ABUSE OF ANIMALS TO YOUR LOCAL SHELTERS, POLICE, FIDO ALERT, NEXTDOOR AND FACEBOOK. deltalivingpetsmag.com

Summer/Fall 2019
very day I see on social media that someone needs to surrender their animals due to financial hardship brought on by a sickness in the family. Unfortunately, every year, millions of Americans will suffer a heart attack, stroke or be diagnosed with cancer. 70% of these people will live, but 54% will go bankrupt in the process due to not being able to work while they are receiving treatment. What would you do if you got sick and couldn’t go to work? How would you take care of your family and your pets? Would you drain your savings/retirement account, borrow from family or friends or rely on a GoFundMe account? We don’t know if or when this will happen to us, so I offer a way to give you peace of mind in case this happens to your family. My name is Wendy Turner and I am so excited to share this concept with you. My business, Living Benefits Insurance and Retirement Solutions, has helped many people protect themselves and their families in case they live a long life, get sick along the way or die too soon. What are Living Benefits? Living Benefits are a part of a term or permanent life insurance plan and is offered at no additional charge making life insurance actually “life” insurance not “death” insurance. This is not only available for terminally ill people, but also chronic and critical illnesses. If you are diagnosed with a heart attack, stroke, cancer or up to 13 other illnesses, or if you are unable to
perform 2 of the 6 activities of daily living (feeding, toileting, bathing etc.) you qualify to accelerate your “death” benefit, while you are alive to use as you please and usually taxfree. This takes the stress of finances off your shoulders and allows you to concentrate on your treatment and spending time with your family. This concept has actually been shown to save people’s lives because stress is a huge factor in our wellness. Everyday, people upgrade their technology, get a new cell phone or tablet or upgrade their car. Are you already paying for life insurance? 98% of existing life insurance policies do not include Living Benefits and if they do, it is for the terminally ill only. Let’s review your existing policy and I can show you how to replace that policy with one with Living Benefits. Most policies I replace cost the same or less than what they are paying now for the old “death” insurance policy. You don’t have life insurance? Do you pay for insurance on your cell phone or car? Your life and your family are way more important than these inanimate objects. Let’s meet and I can show you how a life insurance policy with Living Benefits is as affordable as your daily Starbucks. As an example, a 40yr old male in good health can have a $1,000,000 10yr term policy for $32.83 a month or 20 yr term policy for $57.02 per month. Contact me at 925-428-0187 or wendy@ livingbenefitsretirementsolutions.com for a FREE financial review. We offer life insurance and retirement plans with little to know fees and tax-free retirement plan options with guaranteed income for life based on IRS tax code 7702. dlm deltalivingpetsmag.com

N
ow days a majority of towns here in the far East Bay are hosting pet events. Animal events have begun to take over almost everywhere because pets are family. We want to include them when we attend outings. One of those outings was held April 27, 2019, in Discovery Bay, California. Hosting the Paws on Parade’s second year was the town of Discovery Bay CSD and in partnership with the Discovery Bay Lions Club the turnout was spectacular.
18
Summer/Fall 2019
The inaugural year 2018 went above and beyond what they could have ever hoped for raising over $4000.00 for the dog park renovations. This year was even better. All kinds of dogs participated in the parade. The weather was a pleasant spring day and the vendors were plenty. The free family event gives the local community their own “bite” in the pet event community. Marianne Wiesen is in charge of the events schedule and plans on growing the event every year. If you missed the event this year, contact Marianne at 925-915-1204 and she can put you on the list to receive information for next year’s Paws on Parade. Vendor spots range from $25 to $0 if you have a nonprofit. “Rescueing” T Real Estate One Pet At A Time
By Lori Abreu

o earn a community’s trust, your reputation is everything. Believing in your community and following up with action to support it, is what will make a difference on creditability and how it will leave your mark on others and a community. A majority of people’s value and items of importance include religion, health, family and

financial being. One of the values that impact health and family is our pets. Studies show how pets can improve health, either by having a service dog, relaxation or taking a brisk walk with your dog. Two-thirds of all American’s own a pet, and 90% of people consider their pets as part of their family. Real estate is certainly one of those categories which would fall into a financial consideration and quality of life and can be darn right scary. It would only seem natural, when selling real estate, taking my love of deltalivingpetsmag.com
animals and making dreams come true by owning a home, combining all of these three things to not only fulfill my career but puts focus on helping others as well . While juggling life, career, family, it is important to select those causes which make your heart beat a little faster. I personally am involved and support My Buddy Dog Rescue and Hold Your Horses. I met Carol Stone, 12 years ago when she wanted to follow her dream of owning a ranch to have her show dogs, as well as offer other services including dog rescue and boarding. It took almost 2years but we found her the home she longed for. My Buddy Dog Rescue buys dog food for those who cannot afford to feed their best friends or pay vet bills when they are unable to. We have expanded My Buddy Dog Rescue with a division of Adopt a Buddy, which looked at local families who are homeless, or farm workers that barely survive and adopt those families at Christmas time to provide them with presents, clothes and grocery gift cards. Hold Your Horses is an organization run by Chantel who I have great respect for. As people are in firestorms and fleeing for their lives, firefighters trying to save the personal property, Hold Your Horses run towards the fire to save those pets which had to be left behind. The Camp Fire this year was catastrophic, and the difference Hold Your Horses has made in saving pets, housing them, supplies to those living in tents still, has been life changing, Both of these women I have utmost respect for, I call them friends and do everything I can to support and work with their organizations. Selling real estate for me, isn’t just about deltalivingpetsmag.com
“selling” real estate, it is understanding someone’s life, how a move impacts them, what is best for my clients as a #1priority, financially is this move the right thing and sustainable, being their rock when things get scary and them knowing I am their partner for life and not just a transaction. It means rescuing pets when people are forced to relocate, looking for soil type and terrain specific to their animals, fencing, and neighboring properties and understanding people really do list their pets’ needs as one of their check list items. Coming from a corporate background, 18 years ago when I made a career change to reduce travel for my family and became closer to my community, I thought I may get bored. Far from it, my heart just expanded to include my clients, their needs and my expertise in negotiations was perfect for the specialty properties. My experience in corporate contracts and marketing, dealing with fortune 500 CEO’s and unmatched marketing experience was a perfect training ground for what I do today. I have sold properties from $32,000 to ten million dollars and every client in between can be a referral for future transactions. I am a problem solver, protector, gate keeper, confidant, house cleaner upper, psychologists, listener, coordinator, cheerleader….never just a real estate agent. dlm

• Remembering Carol Stone •
Chantel, Carol and I took photos for Delta Pets; to share our common love for animals and animal rescue. We never dreamed Carol would not be here to see its publication in print. I met Carol Irene Stone almost 20 years ago, where she traveled as a Senior Vice President for Bank of America and lived with her husband Danny and their Finnish Spitz show dogs and pets in San Ramon. I later had the privilege of meeting the rest of her immediate family, son Brian, granddaughter Kailey, daughter in law Genevieve and niece Terra. I am hopeful I can capture what a remarkable person she was to me, her family and everyone who knew her. Carol’s life was Suomi breeding, dog shows and opened Stones K9 in Knightsen, CA to further her passion for the animals. She was the home for many law enforcement K9 dogs, people who needed temporary homes for pets while they were in transition and offered a safe and loving boarding facility for those who needed the service as well. Carol started My Buddy Dog Rescue which was a nonprofit for animal rescue and added Adopt A Buddy to include deltalivingpetsmag.com
the owners of the pets who needed food, care, Christmas Gifts and donated money to care for the homeless. We ran fundraisers to keep money in the accounts to help other people. Carol was part of Knightsen Neighborhood Watch as well as Knightsen Town Advisory Council and Hold Your Horses Rescue Evacuation Team. Carol Stone was truly the most caring, passionate and giving person I’ve ever met. Carol was a rock to her family and she never once showed weakness even in her final days. Even with all she had going on herself, her focus was always making sure everyone else was doing ok. She was an example to us, all in with her love for life and her family, as a wife, mother, nana, aunt, and friend. Anyone who was blessed to share time with Carol knows that there isn’t another person in the world that had a bigger, more giving heart and we are all so lucky to have had her in our lives. Carol has been battling cancer for 7 years, however you would never know it by the way she took on the world. She had no pity parties for the cancer, she in private fought the fight that most of us can’t imagine, with always only
worrying about those around her. Carol didn’t like to talk about the cancer, or even acknowledge it, she would always say, “I’m fine”. She hated to talk about the cancer or treatment, and when people are so powerful, I was hoping she would be fine. When she texted me and told me she was in the hospital recently, she again assured me, “it has nothing to do with the cancer”, because she knew I’d worry, then the call came where she entered ICU. My strong and competent friend found herself in a body that even she was at the mercy of this horrible disease. As I held her hand and told her how much I loved her and how she changed the world, and everyone knew if there was any fight left, she would be the one to do it. Carol will now be in heaven overseeing and running things from up there! May her spirit and her legacy stand for the high principles and compassion she stood for and others strive to be just part of who she was as a person. I will dearly miss my friend; her family has lost their leader and they will be working to continue her dream of running Stones K9 as well as the rescue. Summer/Fall 2019
