ADVERTISING SALES Hello DeltaStylers! I have contemplated getting one of those big Christmas cards for my front yard that says “Scrooge Lives Here.” It’s not that I don’t like Christmas; it’s just that I don’t like all of the additional responsibilities that come along with the holiday season. I love a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, but I don’t want to decorate one. Presents that are wrapped are much better than those in a bag, but I don’t like to wrap presents. I love to give the perfect gifts to my family and my children, but I would rather shave off my eyebrows than fight the hoards of Christmas shoppers. I am blessed enough to have a mother who does all of the cooking because heaven knows I don’t have a spare minute for all of the planning, grocery shopping and standing over a hot stove that a proper Christmas dinner requires. I haven’t always been this “bah-humbug,” but the year we ate Christmas lunch on paper plates my mother made an executive decision, and it has been better for everyone involved. You may even find it hard to believe I used to put lights up around the outside of my house, until the year I stapled my thumb to the roof and that decorating diva went running for the hills. Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Sweet Baby Jesus. When my daughters were young, I
would make them clean out all the toys in their bedrooms on Christmas Eve, and we would take them to the Salvation Army. I knew they would be getting plenty more, but this was not something they understood, so it wasn’t always an easy task. The very first year we did this, my oldest daughter was four years old. When we got to the Salvation Army, she got all her Barbies and their accessories and gave them to a little girl about the same age as she. Within the blink of an eye, her attitude completely changed, and she began to show the little girl all the different outfits for the Barbies. When we got in the car to leave, I looked in my rearview mirror, and she had the biggest smile on her face. When I asked her what she was smiling about, she said, “That sure did feel good. Can we do that every year?” I may be selfish in many, many ways, but that day I felt as though I had shown my daughter the true joy in giving. Give something this Christmas the way that Christ gave his life for you. It is an act that can abolish the “bah-humbug” in the scroogiest of Scrooges. Happy Holidays,

Making the Delta Smile for 22 Years!
myFOXdfw.com released its annual myFOX Gift Guide and named Monroe’s very own Mr. P’s Tees their #7 gift in the category of Gifts that Give Back. As we shared with you in the November feature story on artist, Lissy Compton, she donates 15% of proceeds to the Northeast Louisiana Food Bank.
Say cheese this holiday season! When Mom decided to apply her culinary genius in launching our business, she was inspired by the spirit of our dad, a man who loved life and loved good food. At Mississippi Cheese Straw Factory, we value families — ours and yours. So we’re naturally delighted that Mom’s cheese straws, our family tradition, have now become a favorite holiday tradition of families everywhere, bringing smiles wherever they’re served! The staff of DeltaStyle Magazine would like to give a special THANK YOU to Jason Bullock of JPS Aviation and PJ of Arrive In Style for being so generous and offering their facilities and services for our December photo shoot.

Sarah’s Savy Style Fashion extraordinaire, Sarah Davis fancies herself as a modern day Scarlett O’Hara. A little preppy, a little trendy, and a lot Southern, this 30 something gal uses fashion as a natural departure from her stressful day job in real estate. You can get more than you bargained for by visiting her blog at workdayweekend.blogspot.com.
Little Black Dress It’s the pinnacle of style, the staple of our closets, the “when all else fails” go-to for every woman on the planet. The LBD - it saves lives, y’all! One of my steadfast fashion commandments is that I don’t put anything in my closet that can’t be worn in at least four different ways. Dressed up, dressed down, worn through the seasons (summer and football), and workday appropriate. When choosing a dress I want to be able to put something under and over it, so it functions as a skirt and as a top. Fit is paramount and budget is a close second. My fave LBD, as you can see, cinches the waist, accentuates the shoulders, and best of all is less than $20. It doesn’t get much better than that! Don’t miss out on the
Special Moments
Hearing loss doesn’t just affect the person who has it, their hearing loss actually has a large effect on their loved ones as well. Family members and spouses are often negatively impacted with frustrations from the communication challenges posed by the hearing loss. In fact, untreated hearing loss is an enormous contributor to tensions and displeasure among middle-aged couples today. Rather than enjoying their time together, many of these couples spend time arguing through simple conversations and isolating themselves from each other from mere exhaustion of trying to communicate. One such example was recently shared in an online Huffington Post editorial. Senior writer, Ann Brenoff, wrote a personal column depicting her own struggles with her husband’s hearing loss. This article, titled “How My Husband’s Hearing Loss Has Affected Our Social Life” provides commentary on the barriers that have been created between her husband and her due to his hearing loss. If you or a loved one is suffering from untreated hearing loss, call us today to schedule your appointment. Don’t miss out on special moments with your loved ones, some moments you can’t every get back.

A Family of Harmony that came together a little differnetly
I
t’s an uneasy feeling wondering if you are ever going to find “the one.” Many men and women turn to online dating these days to find their one true love. When online dating started up in the early 2000s, many people thought finding love online was a silly method to go about dating. Now, over 40 million single Americans have tried online dating. eHarmony launched its online dating service in 2000, and now it is the number one Trusted Relationship Services Provider in the United States. With 20 million eHarmony users, it is obvious that the old ludicrous misconception of online dating is now a thing of the past. An average of 438 users of this dating service get married every day in the United States as a result of being matched on eHarmony.com, producing thousands upon thousands of success stories every year. Here is a prime example of one such success story, a man and woman who were born and

by Kylie Stracener raised right here in the Delta that found a lasting connection through eHarmony.com.
First, let’s meet Kyle.
Kyle, of Calhoun, LA, was a single father raising three children on his own—two of which were teenagers. The responsibility of having to keep up with his kids’ schedules, coach a high school football team, and fulfill the obligations required as a teacher all at once was an overwhelming one to tackle on his own. With a busy schedule like that, it was nearly impossible to go out and meet someone that he would be interested in dating. Playing the role of Superman can be a tough task without a trusty sidekick, but many single parents are forced to play this role every day. Out of curiosity, Kyle decided to sign up for an account on eHarmony.com in August of 2009. He thought it would be an interesting and easy way of meeting other singles his age, so with all negative stigmas aside about online dating, Kyle dove head first into answering the numerous questions eHarmony provides.
eHarmony’s patented Compatibility Matching System of various questions allows members to be matched with compatible persons with whom they are likely to enjoy a long-term relationship.
Now, let’s meet Niki.
Niki was a widow, raising three children under the age of 5 and although she had not been through a divorce, she was as single and overwhelmed as any other parent that didn’t have a spouse to help lessen the load. Niki is a native of Delhi, LA, who, it seems, is one of the most independent and strong willed women in the world. When her youngest daughter was a year old, Niki found out she was pregnant with twins. Later on that very same week, her husband was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away two incredibly short years later. Niki was left to mother a five-year-old and twin two-year-olds all alone, while maintaining her busy schedule as a local nurse practitioner. Before signing up with eHarmony, she had been on a few unsuccessful dates. She

The conversation seemed to go better than either one of them ever expected. Out of the blue, Niki suddenly announced that she had three children. Kyle reassured her by saying, “It doesn’t matter to me if a lady has kids or not. If she is the right person for me then the number of kids doesn’t matter.” He then informed her that he had three children himself. Niki could feel her smile stretch from ear to ear. Kyle remembers Niki’s question, “’You do know how old I am, don’t you?’ You could hear her smile beaming through the phone. “You do know how old I am, don’t you?” Kyle retorted swiftly. Cynthia Alisa Daniels & Jarrett Todd Hunnicutt
Cynthia Alisa Daniels and Jarrett Todd Hunnicutt were united in marriage on August 3, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Chad Merrell and Reverend David Roberts. The marriage blessing was given by Reverend Connie Smith. Music was provided by Marcie Hall, harpist; Hunt Neely, organist; Stefan Cashwell and Kristen Oden, Vocalists. Mrs. Shirley Douglas served as wedding planner. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lajoy Daniels, Jr. of Sterlington, Louisiana. Her godparents are Reverend and Mrs. Connie Smith of Dubach, Louisiana. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Clark of Downsville, Louisiana, Mrs. Vivanae Parnell Daniels of Farmerville, Louisiana, the late Mr. Lajoy Daniels, and the late Mr. Wayne Neal. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Randell Hunnicutt of Monroe, Lousiana. He is the grandson of Mrs. Hazel Bamburg of Monroe and the late Mr. I.A. Bamburg; Mrs. Francis Woodard of Monroe and the late Mr. Johnny Woodard of Monroe; Mrs. Bonnie Hunnicutt and the late Mr. Johnny Hunnicutt of Benton, Arkansas. Given in marriage by her father, Alisa wore a Mori Lee gown of white bridal satin and organza. She wore a diamond heart necklace that was a wedding gift from the groom. Her bouquet was designed by Alan Futch and cascading with white chocolate roses; it contained ribbon from her mother’s 1979 bridal bouquet. Laura Blanchard Tafoya served as matron of honor. Maids of honor were Natalia Krier and Lauren Wade. Bridesmaids were Amy Wilson Wyles, Katelin Cox, Allison Moore, and Katie Tiner Daniels. Savanna Morganthall served as the flower girl, and April King Parker was the proxy for the bride. Caity Brown, Caroline Brown, and Christine George Sanders were readers of the scripture. Keith Hunnicutt served as best man. Groomsmen were Garrett Babb, Clint Causey, Richard Daniels, Landon Ledford, Tyler McCoy, and Seth Thomas. Ushers were Ross Bamburg, Taylor Bounds, Matt Fontana, and Colby Reynolds. Charley Ridings served as ring bearer, and Benjamin Ridings was the program attendant. Following the ceremony, the couple was honored at a reception catered by Barbara Reynolds and the Fish House at the American Legion Hall in Forsythe Park. Guests dined while entertained by the band, “Southern Lovin’” from Atlanta, Georgia. The Bride’s cake, a four tier almond cake with buttercream icing and adorned by white chocolate roses, was made by Becky Cox. The groom’s cake was a Saints’ theme of chocolate and Italian creme. The formal black and white theme from the wedding was continued throughout the reception. The white roses and décor were designed by Barbara Ormond, Candy Gough, Sheryl Copeland, Janice Kay Dean, Leslye Barnes, and Martha Colvin. Reception attendants were Tara Bamburg; Jada Gardner; Abigail, Allie, and Anna Parkinson; Anna and Allie Richardson; and Juliet Pipes. Following the bouquet and garter toss, the couple was showered with white rose petals as they walked down the flag lined sidewalk leading to their limousine. Alisa is a graduate of Ouachita Christian School and attended Louisiana Delta Community College and LTC, where she obtained her certification as a pharmacy technician. She is employed by Medic Pharmacy. Todd is a graduate of Ouachita Parish High School and the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in construction management. He is employed by Union Pacific Railroad. On the eve of the wedding, the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at Kayla’s Kitchen. Photos of the couple and sentiments were shared by family and friends as guests dined. Following a honeymoon to the Sandals Resort in St. Lucia, the couple will make their home in Monroe. uck hunting and fashion don’t necessarily go together like peanut butter and jelly, but the cast of the hit A&E show Duck Dynasty is hoping to change that. First, 16-year-old Sadie Robertson walked the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, and now her aunt and uncle Jep and Jessica Robertson are setting plans in motion for their own fashion line!
“Jep and I are currently talking to a design team, and are planning on having a fashion line out in 2014. We will have clothes and accessories,” Jessica tells PEOPLE. “It will be at all the showrooms for boutiques to pick up. We are so excited about this business venture. It’s been a dream of mine for a long time.” For the time being, the couple is partnering up with fashion label Corello to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As part of “No Shave November,” 10% of all profits from Corello’s new line will go to the cause. “Jep and I have met so many children that either are currently being treated or were treated at St. Jude,” Jessica says. “Our family is so thankful for the work they do and the opportunity to work with Corello on this fundraising campaign. We couldn’t have picked a better team of designers and their fashions work so well for us both. We all get so busy and sometimes we need a reminder to slow down and think of those in need.”

The brand’s new line features edgy jewelry and clothing (its motto is “Dress Like a Rock Star”). Jessica’s favorite pieces are the “funky coats,” while Jep is all about the leather cuffs. Partnering up with a clothing label was a natural fit for Jessica. “As a teen, I loved staying up to date on the new fashions. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to create my own sense of style,” she says. “There are so many styles out there, but I don’t brand myself one certain style, because the truth is that I mix them together. I wake up each day and mesh several different brands into a perfect outfit. When girls ask me for advice on fashion, I usually tell them, ‘Wear what you feel great in! Be confident in who you are and what makes you feel good.’” Even Jep (who ordinarily loves a good bandana and a pair of ripped jeans) feels more style-savvy thanks to the experience: “I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was committed to the cause,” he says. “I was a little surprised that I liked the fashion side of it as much as I did. I’ve always thought it would be cool to be a rock star, and with Corello you can find your inner rock star. And no, I will not shave off my beard once November is over.” Adds Jessica: “Even if he did, I wouldn’t worry too much about it — he can grow another one in a month!”

POTPOURRI BOOK CLUB
The “Hidden” French Connection Potpourri Tastes Wine and War Members of Potpourri Book Club gathered at the lovely Northside home of members Jane and Martha Hayden to continue their celebration of “Food, Wine, and Style” ---the theme for this club year. Member Georgiann Potts reviewed Wine and War: The Battle for France’s Greatest Treasure by Don and Petie Kladstrup. She began her review by asking the members to think carefully about what they would want to preserve should they suddenly find themselves occupied right here in America, in Louisiana, in Monroe. The responses were many and varied --- national monuments, religious freedom, and agriculture were among those mentioned. Potts then moved the discussion toward the French and how they bravely worked both with the Germans and within the French Resistance to do what they could to “win WWII for France and French wines”. Whether smuggling refugees in wine barrels (literally rolling them beneath German soldiers’ noses), or creating false walls to hide entrances to caves holding private reserves, or selling the Germans “exquisite vintages” which were, in truth, the worst of their production --- the French were brave and inventive as each did his part to help the effort. Following the review, the members enjoyed a wine tasting of two classic French wines. The twin dining rooms of the Hayden home were beautifully appointed with a nod to the upcoming Halloween holiday. One room was dedicated to a French white, and the other featured a French red. Glorious pumpkins --- both natural and those created from other materials as art forms --- graced both tables, together with an enviable collection of Halloween memorabilia. Gourds, fall foliage, seasonal berries, and stunning wine glasses on heavy silver trays completed the twin compositions. Lemonade and citrus punch provided the perfect palate cleansers between the two wines. Joining the Hayden mother-and-daughter team as hostesses for the occasion were Sue Nawas and Jane Conrad. Their tempting menu included chicken salad tea sandwiches (a Nawas specialty, it turns out), pimento cheese sandwiches, smoked pork a la Waldorf on toast points, chocolate rounds, freshly baked pound cake, pumpkin rolls, and chocolate Halloween Hershey treats. Enjoying the gathering were club president Allison Upshaw Mead, Bennie Abell, Adele Ransom, LaVerne Bodron, Phoebe Mathys, Lillian Gentry, Carole Kilpatrick, Martha Jane Anderson, Barbara Cattar, Jane Conrad, Sue Nawas, Shearon Henry, Pat Blanchard, Suzanne Wolff, Rosemary Luffey, Dollie Petrus, Pat Bagwell, Camille Wood, Judy Worthen, M’Elise Barraza, Nancy Staab, Mike Husted, Francesca “Jerry” Oakley, Georgiann Potts, Martha Hayden, and Jane Hayden. | DeltaStyle Magazine | December 2013 100 | DeltaStyle Magazine | December 2013 PBC_layout1.indd 1

WINE TRIVIA Q. Why are French wines named after the region and not the grape? A. Wines in France - really in almost all of Europe - had developed their styles over the centuries; a grape (more often a blend of grapes) was eventually found to suit an area or even better, express the area. To know where the grapes are grown is to know the style of the wine. To know much about the grapes themselves was wine geekdom, only necessary for professionals. Q. After opening a bottle of wine, what is the amount of time we have to drink it? A. Traditionally , you have about 2 days and this is extended using a “vac -u- vin” or nitrogen system. You should always control the elements of heat, light and air.
Jane Conrad, Adele Ransom, M’Elise Barazza
Carole Kilpatrick, Rosemary Luffy, Lillian Gentry
Q. How many glasses are in a bottle? A. There are 25 oz in a bottle of wine. The average wine glass is 8 - 10 oz, filling the glass 1/2 way will give you 4-5 glasses. Q. When was the corkscrew designed? A. The first corkscrew patent was granted to the Reverend Samuell Henshall, in England in 1795, but simillar versions may have been used as early as 1676.

Willie’s Louisiana fried frog legs with okra and French fries.
Welcome to Willie’s Duck Diner,
where saying grace is encouraged and they’re serving up happy, happy, happy diners one soulful spoonful at a time. James (“Bucky” to us) and Brenda Newell have had a long legacy in this area as proud restaurant owners, and this venture has certainly proven to be no exception. His history of fine Louisiana based cuisine, mixed with the perfect seasoning of downhome southern Cajun comfort food, is why “Willie’s” has a line that begins at the front doors long before they open at 11:00 a.m. Over the past years, Bucky has been known as a coach, an educator, a musician, and a phenomenal cook whom I have had the distinct pleasure of following for many years. From humble beginnings, this chef/owner started out many years ago, with a little hole-in-the-wall eatery called Boudreaux’s. Later, Bucky and Brenda evolved with the times and the rough patches in the economy, and moved Boudreaux’s to its last home over on Tower Drive right off of North 18th Street. While continuing in that “never give up” mentality, and in an attempt to keep up with the ever growing needs of the area, as well as the constantly changing demo-graphic of our area, this hardworking couple created Who Dat’s Chicken Tenders & More. True to their nature, Bucky and Brenda’s dream of Who Dat’s held to the values of southern hospitality and charm. Sharing every day together 104 | DeltaStyle Magazine | December 2013
as an adventure, this honest and diligent couple tackled each day with a smile, a warm “we thank you for your business”, and a prayer to God thanking Him for His divine intervention in their lives and the blessings they’ve received through their loyal customers. Yet, this was just a beginning for Bucky and Brenda, because with the friendships they had made through their church, their blessings were just preparing to mount. With nothing more than his dreams, a fabulous palate, a phenomenal taste for good food, and a million recipes flowing through his head, Bucky Newell was greeted with one of the most trying challenges he and Brenda would ever face at the start of this year: Willie Robertson wanted his very own restaurant business. So the journey began, but first Bucky and Brenda had to make a prayerful decision about what they would do with Who Dat’s. Initially, it was Bucky and Brenda’s hope that someone would like to take over the business which was located in the heart of Monroe, if for no other reason than to keep those many loyal patrons of the establishment satisfied with the signature downhome cooking that they had become accustomed to over the last two years, but as fate would have it, that just wasn’t in the cards. With heavy hearts, in August of 2013 Bucky and Brenda closed the doors on Who Dat’s as they prepared for the biggest venture of their lives, thanks to local entrepreneur Willie Robertson.
Embarking on this metamorphic journey required a leap of faith. Bucky and Brenda held fast to their faith in God, the trust of Willie Robertson in Bucky’s culinary abilities, and Willie’s strong sense of leadership to pull this venture together and make it a marvelous success. As the days turned into weeks, there were many details that had yet to be worked out, with the most important of those being “what are we going to call it?” and “where are we going to open it?” There were a few options open as to the location, but everyone involved knew that it had to be convenient to the out of town visitors to our area, as well as to those local patrons that would no doubt be ready and willing to follow Willie and the Newell’s at it’s opening. So, with that thought process in mind it made sense for this unique eatery to be opened right in the heart of West Monroe’s “Restaurant Row” and it was with the help of business moguls Eddie and Joseph Hakim that this idea became a reality. Next came the really BIG question, “what does Willie want to call it?” There are many eateries that have come and gone, but the one thing that any restaurant owner will tell you, “it’s all in the name”. So it was with this mentality that The Robertson’s, as well as The Newell’s, set out on the quest to hunt down the appropriate name that would be linked to what would prove to be the biggest venture ever for the Newell’s. There were many choices, endless
possibilities and while many tried, and several failed, it was Willie Robertson himself who dubbed the name of his delectable delicacy as “Willie’s Duck Diner.” With the name intact and the location secured, it was NOW time for the most important part of this venture…the creation of a menu worthy of North Louisiana’s famed family. It was time to get quackin, Jack. Some rolled off the tongue with the utmost of ease, while other items were merely a game of trial and error, but, in the long run, Willie’s Duck Diner has put forth a fanciful feast of a menu to dazzle the doubters, tame the tasteless, and satisfy both young and old alike. Appetizers, entrees and desserts – it’s all there. At the onset of your visit to Willie’s Duck Diner one cannot help but take in the down-home appetizers offered as pre-game entertainment for your palate before the real meal begins. Tailgator’s West

With the lovely chill of fall in the air, the smell of the leaves and the thrill of football on everyone’s lips, TTOTT couldn’t find a better location to highlight for this month’s edition than that of Tailgator’s West. With the backdrop of Rebel Stadium standing proud in the foreground, walking into this establishment has always struck me as I feel when I’m pulling up a chair at my Mamow’s dinner table on Sunday afternoons. The décor is inviting and friendly, warmly displaying the team support of all of the area high schools, colleges and our beloved New Orleans Saints. The walls are adorned with fleur de lis, and proud moments in the lives of its beloved owners, Jack and Debbie Clampit, along proud attributes to Louisiana Wildlife and game in this “Sportsman’s Paradise.” Smells emanating from the kitchen take me back to a time when folks weren’t in any hurry to get up and go, but family members would meander over to the couch and lazyboy, find a place to catnap, and doze. Flaky crusts from scratch made fruit pies, adorned with
luscious fruit toppings and dusted lightly with a tender amount of sugar dust, after a meal of chicken and dumplings, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, purple hull peas, stewed okra and tomatoes, homestyle mac and cheese, candied yams, sautéed squash with onions and turnip greensa stick to your ribs kind of meal just like all the good southern ladies are brought up knowing how to make. These and many more are the kind of meals any patron can expect to receive at Tailgator’s West. Now if you’re trying to loosen your belt a little before those heavy holiday treats and potluck festivities set in, Tailgator’s also offers a “lighter fare” with such menu items as the “Cheezy Chicken Sandwich” consisting of a grilled chicken breast, cheddar cheese, sautéed onions and served on Texas Toast. If you’re not much on the sandwich items, their scrumptious salads aim to please. “Two Legget Chicken” with your choice of grilled or fried chicken mounted atop a bed of crisp lettuce, and garnished with tomatoes, crisp cucumbers,

For those diners that are looking to partake of Catfish Jack’s “Supersnappydinowhopping Goodness,” Tailgator’s even offers the “Gator’s Nest.” This tremendous show stopper will tantalize even the rowdiest of taste buds with diners choice of crispy fried Louisiana alligator (or grilled for those seeking to downsize a bit) brought to your table nestled atop a mountain of lettuce, fresh tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, boiled eggs, and garnished with house made bacon bits and shredded cheddar cheese for that “dynowhopping” punch. Melinda Myers will be the keynote speaker at the NELA Master Gardeners fourth annual gardening seminar on Saturday, January 18th, at the West Monroe Convention Center.
Can you believe we’re already saying goodbye to 2013? I hope you’ve had a year in the garden as productive and exciting as I’ve had; a year of ongoing experimentation! As we show 2013 the door, let’s anticipate an even more productive 2014 by marking our calendars for two very important events in the early New Year. First, on Saturday, January 18th, the Northeast Louisiana Master Gardeners will present Melinda Myers of Birds and Blooms Magazine at our fourth annual January seminar which is held in conjunction with Ag Expo. Melinda’s topic will be “Beautiful, Easy, and Affordable Landscape Makeovers.” Three additional speakers come from our pool of local gardening talent. Robert Rickett will speak on attracting rubythroated hummingbirds to your garden, Jimmy Dean (not the late country singer and sausage maker) will show us how to attract bluebirds, and Jeff Landry, will speak on growing grapes in Louisiana. Preregistration is preferred but walk-ins will be welcomed, too. Registration forms can be picked up at our local garden centers and hardware stores. Admission is $20.00 and will include refreshments, door prizes, vendors, and a book signing by Melinda Myers. Doors will open at the West Monroe Convention Center at 7:30 a.m. with the program concluding at 12:30 p.m. For more information on Melinda Myers, visit her website at www.melindamyers.com. This seminar is one of two penultimate events for the NELA Master Gardeners. We’re already making preparations for our spring plant sale, so be looking out for more information on that event, too! Second, the North Central Louisiana Master Gardeners, our friends in Ruston, will hold their third annual gardening seminar on Saturday, February 1st, from 8:00 a.m. until noon, at Lomax Hall on the campus of Louisiana Tech University. Steven Chamblee, chief horticulturist for Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, Texas, will give two presentations: “Rebuilding Your Dream: Reviving Your Garden” and “Great Garden Ideas.” Mark Carpenter, owner of The Lily Farm near Center, Texas, will speak on daylilies and their care. Onsite registration will be $10.00 and the program will include refreshments, door prizes and a raffle.
Are you using a real Christmas tree this year? Abies faseri) is the most popular Christmas tree species used in the southern United States and for good reason; the scent alone just screams, “Hey y’all, it’s Christmas!” (Picea rubens) at elevations above 4,500 feet in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. These populations were left on the highest peaks after the last Pleistocene glaciers retreated some 20,000 years ago. Unable to Appalachian mountain counties and trucked all over the country for Christmas. When Christmas is over, what do you do with the live tree? Well, here are two suggestions. Used Christmas trees make great habitats for wildlife. If you live near a pond or lake, sink the tree just off shore with cement blocks. The tree will
hiding place. The next spring, when the bite is on, you’ll be glad you put your used Christmas tree to good use. If you don’t live on or near a body of water, then consider using your Christmas tree in your backyard as a way to attract birds. Treats made from suet, peanut butter, birdseed, and like material can be hidden among the branches for our feathered friends that overwinter in the area. As winter progresses into spring and if there are still any branches on the tree, good nesting habitat is available. But, birds may simply enjoy perching in the branches on a winter day. Maybe they’re anticipating the spring gardening season as much as I am. Molly and I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
F us of Christmas all year.

isten to yo L MONROE GARDEN CLUB
Natchez Duo Share Design Expertise
Take two retired educators, give them a little extra time to pursue the things they truly love, sprinkle with the special “spice” that permeates historic Natchez, and magic happens! Members and guests of the Monroe Garden Club were treated to a little of that Natchez magic recently when Carolyn Gwin (formerly of Monroe) and Mary Lesley Bayou DeSiard Country Club was the setting for the eager crowd. Setting the tone for the gathering was a delightful foyer arrangement designed by MGC members featuring a colorful collection of seasonal gourds, pumpkins, and corn sitting atop a burlap cloth. Overseeing the collection and offering a welcoming touch of humor was a whimsical turkey sporting majestic tail “feathers” of nandina foliage and berries. Continuing the Thanksgiving theme, the MGC ladies created a soaring arrangement of gladioli, roses, lilies, mums, berries, magnolia
A very modern, minimalist arrangement was the next order of the day. Using very tall curly willow branches as the “form” for this beauty, Leslie added stunning stems of “caned” bird-of-paradise to add both drama and a pop of color. Sago palm fronds and rolled Aspidistra leaves completed the look perhaps best described as “airy and open” by Lesley. As she worked, Lesley advised several times that the effective arranger listens
will tell you where they want to be placed in the arrangement,” she strong and resilient. Work with them --- let them tell you by their shape and fullness where they would look best.” To illustrate further the concept of an airy, minimalist approach to design, Lesley presented a simple class bowl holding only white calla lilies, nothing more. The stems were allowed to fall naturally
added the perfect color spots. A ceramic turkey tureen took center stage at the base, together with apples and assorted gourds and pumpkins. All were placed on a lovely fringed brocade cloth in shades of gold and rust.
elegance of the lilies. “Now just place this on an Oriental chest or a foyer table and you have a big statement at very little cost,” Lesley pointed out.
Lesley took the lead in creating the arrangements, and Gwin offered her assistance while also giving the audience important tips to make their own design experiences easier. As she cleaned up their workspace between arrangements, Gwin quipped, “As y’all know, it takes a mess to make a thing of beauty!”
“twin” a single arrangement of roses, snapdragons, bells-of-Ireland, heather, hydrangea, and stargazer lilies all held in an elegant heavy sterling champagne bucket. Working facing each other with the container between them, each designer quickly created half of a stunning arrangement that, when turned, was perfectly balanced all the way around.
Gwin observed with a chuckle. “We like to show you what you can do with simple --- free --- yard things, from your yard or ‘borrowed’ from a neighbor’s.” Using Aspidistra leaves (clean those with olive oil and a paper towel to get the shine), daisies, and deep red berries collected in a bronze urn, Leslie created a perfectly simply, perfectly gorgeous, and perfectly inexpensive arrangement appropriate to the Thanksgiving season. “This is what we call ‘chunkin’ it’ --- just take your cuttings and stuff them in a lovely vase. They will do the rest,” Leslie pointed out.

Luke 1:26-47 n the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?" And the angel said to her in reply, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God." Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”
Luke 2:8-14 ow there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: 6 "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."

From Pool Table to Altar by William Goss, Community Council Member of St. Lawrence Catholic Community Photography by Gary Guinigundo
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer; he is like a man who looks at his own face in a mirror. He sees himself, then goes off and promptly forgets what he looked like. James 1:23-24
Sitting demurely back from the frontage of Swartz School Road in the Swartz
community is a small, modest church. It is the home of the Roman Catholic Community of St. Lawrence. A part of the Diocese of Shreveport, it is a community true to it unpretentious roots. A worshipping community started to serve the religious education and spiritual needs of the people in rural Northeast Ouachita Parish. During its thirty-six year history, the church has moved from a gathering among the pool tables at the Progressive Men’s Club to a newly re-modeled sanctuary. An unassuming church started by a humble community of Catholic families. Some at St. Lawrence remember the beginning of the Catholic Community in Swartz. In the early 1950’s there was a very limited Catholic presence in rural northeast Ouachita Parish. Bishop Charles P. Greco recognized a need. In a military surplus building on donated land, the community of St. John was born. St. John later merged with Our Lady of Fatima Parish. This early community was a small part of Bishop Greco’s legacy of 33 new parishes, 125 churches/chapels, 100 convents/rectories, 50 schools, and 7 health care facilities. An official history by the Diocese of Shreveport states the earliest Catholic worshipping community at Swartz was founded in April 1978. The first mass for
the community then known as Our Lady of Guadalupe was at the Progressive Men’s Club and continued in the old Swartz School and in people’s homes until the current building was completed in 1981. The new community was soon dedicated to Saint Lawrence. St. Lawrence was a deacon charged with helping the poor in Rome during the early history of the Church. When ordered to bring the Church’s treasure to the Romans, the deacon brought the poor and sick saying, “This is the Church’s treasure!” He was martyred by being tied to an iron grill over a fire. Burning with love of God, legend says he did not feel the flames, telling his tormentors, “Turn me over, I’m done on this side!” And just before he died, “It’s cooked enough now.” (Catholic Online, www. catholic.org/saints) From this humble example, we have built our community. The description humble is an understatement. In co-operation and without hubris, the 150 families at St. Lawrence manage the church through volunteer efforts. Volunteers complete the duties of church administration, religious education, music ministry, cleaning, and minor church maintenance. Many have been involved for years. With respect to the dedication of all, our identity can be seen in Rose Chaplin and Dot Justice. Rose, who recently turned 93, has been a member of St. December 2013 | DeltaStyle Magazine | 129
Lawrence since the beginning. Every Wednesday, Rose is at Mass and then stays to work with the Ladies Altar Society to clean altar, linens, floors, and pews. Dot Justice, matriarch in the large Justice clan, has always been a leader in the community. Inspired by her faith, Dot designed and championed the stained glass Trinity window that is above the altar. These are two examples of the undemanding yet exciting gifts shared by many. The friendly people at St. Lawrence make every effort to greet everyone with a “hello and welcome.” In this sense, the church’s ministry serves the needs of the entire Swartz community. Ministries include the Parish School of Religion, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, a contemporary and traditional music ministry, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, Altar Society, prayer groups, prayer shawl ministry, adult catechism and bible study, and hospitality. The Church is also proud to offer its facilities to the local Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts for meetings. After many years, several traditions have been established in the community. One of the most treasured seems to have been started by an unintentional jokester. Every spring the St. Lawrence community gathers for a barbeque to support our treasury. In an overnight vigil, volunteers freely accept exposure to burns, smoke inhalation, flying spices, and most of all community comradery as up to a thousand chicken halves are barbequed over an iron grill. It has become an expected event looked forward to by many. A second tradition is the White Mass. This is celebrated for all those in the medical and health care profession. Celebrating those who care for others is done in the traditional remembrance of our patron St. Lawrence who cared for the poor and sick. Those recognized are doctors, nurses, specialty fields, administrators, care takers, food service, janitors, and spiritual caregivers. After more than 30 years of worshipping in a facility designed and built as a general purpose building, the community decided to make the atmosphere more worthy of the celebration of the Liturgy of the Mass. With an urgency fired by an enthusiastic leadership team, planning and fundraising began. Barbeques, raffles, movie screenings, and generous donations from the entire community in northeast Louisiana have helped to make this plan a reality. Our history can be seen as a collage. The most important piece is that each of our faces is different. We celebrate these differences together; Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, Spanish, AfricanAmerican, Indian, Native American, and White. Our collage has the fabric of professors, doctors, nurses, and other professionals side by side to laborers, truck drivers, farmers, and stay at home

parents. The collage of St. Lawrence began with a background of solids and stripes on green felt at the Progressive Men’s Club. Now, it is building upon itself in the new sanctuary glittered by a golden tabernacle crowned in a stained class Trinity. The spiritual leader of the community is Fr. Job Edathinatt Scaria, CMI. St. Lawrence is under the pastoral oversight of Fr. Sebastian Kallarackal, CMI, the pastor Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Since 2003, these two international priests from Kerala, India, have blessed St. Lawrence with their presence. This is not unique, Fr. Thomas Kizito Nwachukwu of Nigeria ministered at St. Lawrence during most of the 1990’s. Mass times are Wednesday, 9:00 a.m.; Saturday, 4:00 p.m.; Sunday, 10:00 a.m.; Holy Days of Obligation, 6:00 p.m. The Parish School of Religion meets during the regular school year Sundays at 8:50 a.m. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is Sunday 8:50 a.m. For additional information please call 318-343-1618. St. Lawrence is located at 357 Swartz School Rd., Monroe, LA, 71203, in the Swartz Community. From the west, travel from Lakeshore US Hwy 80 north on La 139 approximately 3.5 miles to Swartz School Rd, turn right and travel 0.5 miles. A few Affordable Care Act, ACA, facts are: • The primary goals of the ACA are to decrease the number of uninsured Americans and reduce the overall costs of health care. • Provides for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions to help eligible low-income and middle- income individuals purchase health insurance through a Marketplace. • Provides a small business health care tax credit to eligible employers. • Provides new opportunities for State Medicaid programs to cover additional adults and children with low incomes, and simplifies the eligibility rules for Medicaid and CHIP. (Louisiana did not expand Medicaid) • Eliminates Lifetime or Annual Limits. • No Pre-existing Exclusion for children under age 19. • Makes cost of prescription drugs more affordable for seniors in the donut hole. In 2013, seniors are now receiving 50% discount on brand-name drugs when in the donut hole. Before the ACA, seniors were paying 100% of the cost of their brand-name drugs in the donut hole. The donut hole is expected to be completely eliminated by 2020 and will decrease every year until then. In 2014, seniors will receive a discount of 52.5% of the cost of their brand-name drugs in the donut hole. • Allows for FREE preventative care for seniors
HEALTHCARE REFORM FOR DUMMIES:
Thanks to the new healthcare reform law, the insurance industry is undergoing a big transformation. Love it or hate it, the Affordable Care Act is law. Nearly every American is going to be affected and we felt it was a good idea to share with you the changes you can expect to see, in order to gain a better understanding of the overwhelming amount of information that is now available. THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT The Affordable Care Act, ACA, often referred to as “Obama Care”, PPACA, or Healthcare Reform, was enacted and signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. The Affordable Care Act puts individuals, families and small business owners in control of their health care. Beginning in 2014, the Affordable Care Act includes a mandate for most individuals to have health insurance or potentially pay a penalty for noncompliance. Individuals will be required to maintain minimum essential coverage for themselves and their dependents. It also reduces what families will have to pay for health care by capping out-of-pocket expenses and requiring preventive care to be fully covered without any out-of-pocket expense. For Americans with insurance coverage who like what they have, they can keep it. Nothing in this act or anywhere in the bill forces anyone to change the insurance they have. Americans without insurance coverage will be able to choose the insurance coverage that works best for them in a new open, competitive insurance market known as the Health Insurance Marketplace Exchange – the same insurance market that every member of Congress will be required to use for their insurance. It keeps insurance companies honest by setting clear rules that rein in the worst insurance industry abuses. And it bans insurance companies from denying insurance coverage because of a person’s pre-existing medical conditions. HEALTH INSURANCE MARKETPLACE EXCHANGES Open Enrollment is October 1, 2013 through March 1, 2014. The ACA requires each to state to have an Exchange. Louisiana is using a Federally Facilitated Exchange (FFE). Exchanges will be set up as a Marketplace for Individual policies and as SHOPs (Small Business Health Options Program) for small employer groups. A small group by Louisiana standards is a group under 50 employees. (See FAQ #1) Plans offered through the Exchange are regulated by the federal government and must include Essential Health Benefits. (See FAQ #12) EXCHANGE PLAN OPTIONS The 4 levels of coverage available in the Exchange will be defined as “Metal Plans.” Each plan has a co-insurance amount, the amounts the individual and the plans pay. Some Insurance Companies may have more than 1 plan in the metal coverage levels. Metal Plan Platinum Gold Silver Bronze
Plan Pays 90% 80% 70% 60%
Individual Pays 10% 20% 30% 40%
Example: An individual in the Silver Plan can expect to pay approximately 30% of the healthcare costs and the plan will pay approximately 70% of the cost of the healthcare costs. SUBSIDIES AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUALS Advance Premium Tax Credits lower the monthly premium an individual will pay throughout the year. Tax credits may be available to individuals with a household income between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (up to $45,960 for an individual and $94,200 for a family) (See FAQ #7) 140 | DeltaStyle Magazine | December 2013
COST SHARING REDUCTIONS Cost Sharing Reductions reduce out-of-pocket expenses for the individual. Generally this would be available to individuals who enroll in Silver Plans with incomes between 100% ($11,490 for an individual and $23,550 for a family of 4) and 250% ($28,725 for an individual and $58,875 for a family of 4) of the Federal Poverty Level. Subsidy amounts may vary by income and family size. CHANGES IN 2014 - No more annual dollar limits on Essential Health Benefits or Lifetime Maximums on benefits - An employer can no longer have a waiting period for benefits longer than 90 days - Guaranteed issue and renewability for plans (no eligible person can be denied coverage) - Insurance Companies will be required to spend at least 80% of each premium dollar on medical expenses. This is often referred to as the Medical Loss Ratio (MLR). 2014 INDIVIDUAL MANDATE Beginning January 1, 2014, the ACA, will include a mandate which requires most individuals to have some form of health insurance coverage or face penalties for not having coverage. The Open Enrollment Period for the Marketplace Exchange is October 1, 2013 - March 31, 2014 (See FAQ #4) - 2014 Penalty - $95 per adult and $47.50 per child (up to $285 for a family) or 1% of family income, whichever is greater. - 2015 Penalty - $325 per adult and $162.50 Per child (up to $975 for a family) or 2% of family income, whichever is greater. - 2016 and beyond penalty - $695 per adult and $347.50 per child (up to $2,085 for a family) or 2.5% of family income, whichever is greater EMPLOYER GROUPS WITH OVER 50 EMPLOYEES Beginning in 2014, employers with 50 or more employees are considered an Applicable Large Employer, ALE, must offer insurance coverage to full time employees or Full Time Equivalent employees, FTE’s, or face penalties starting in 2015. An employee who typically works at least 30 hours a week on average is considered a FTE. Employers will now start keeping records necessary to determine whether they will be considered an ALE. An ALE must offer health insurance to their full-time employees and is subject to the employer mandate as summarized below. - Must offer minimum value health coverage to 95% of all eligible employees - Must offer coverage to dependents under age 26, (but not spouse) -Must offer affordable coverage. The self only premium has to be 9.5% or less of an employee’s household income. Penalties for not meeting Employer Mandate Requirements are as follows: - Penalty for not offering any coverage: $2,000 a year per full-time employee. The first 30 employees are excluded from the calculation. - Penalty for unaffordable coverage: $3,000 a year per full-time employee who purchases insurance through the Individual Exchange and qualifies for and receives a government subsidy. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS, (FAQ’s) 1. What is a Health Insurance Marketplace Exchange? A Health Insurance Marketplace Exchange, often referred to as an Exchange, is a new way to find quality health coverage. It will be set up as a marketplace where you will have the ability to shop and compare many plans in one central location. You can learn if you can get lower costs based on your income and compare your coverage options side-by-side, and enroll. Insurance plans in the Marketplace are offered by private companies. They cover the same core set of benefits. No plan can turn you away or charge you more because you have an illness or medical condition. Plans can’t charge women more than men for the same plan and many preventative services are covered at no cost to you. 2. When do the major changes of health care reform come into effect? The requirements to have health insurance will go into effect on January 1, 2014. Most citizens and lawful residents of the U.S. will need to have health insurance from this date or face a tax penalty. However, the first open enrollment for exchange health insurance plans will begin October 1, 2013. 3. When will my coverage start? The Open Enrollment Period for the Marketplace Exchange starts October 1, 2013 and last through March 31, 2014. Coverage starts as soon as January 1, 2014. 4. What are the penalties for not having health coverage? If you don’t have health insurance, your penalty will be calculated based on your income and the number of people in your household. In 2014, the penalty amount will be $95 or 1% of your annual income per person in your household, (whichever is greater), increasing to $325 or 2% in 2015, and $695 or 2.5% in 2016. After 2016, the dollar amount will be adjusted for inflation each year. Penalties for dependents under 18 will be calculated as a half. The penalty will include each month that you do not have coverage for yourself and your dependents. 5. I already have health insurance. Will Healthcare Reform affect me? Yes, in some ways. Healthcare Reform includes polices that affect all health insurance plans, but you will not need to switch plans if you are happy with your existing coverage and it is still available to you. 6. If I am not covered by an employer or government-sponsored plan, will I have to buy my own health insurance? Yes. Starting in 2014, if you are a U.S. citizen or lawfully present resident, you will be required to buy health care coverage for yourself and your dependents. There are just a few exceptions to this requirement such as members of certain religious sects, prisoners, undocumented immigrants, and Indian tribal members. Depending on your income and household status, you may qualify for a subsidy that can lower your insurance costs. If you decide not to get health insurance, you may be subject to a tax penalty. 7. What is a health care subsidy and how do I know if I qualify for one? A health care subsidy is an assistance payment to your health care coverage provided by the government based on your income and household status. The amount of your subsidy will depend on your income and the size of your family. If you qualify for a subsidy, you will have the option to enroll in health insurance coverage through a government-sponsored Exchange. You will have access to free, in person assistance trained professionals such as insurance agents, consultants, brokers and navigators. 8. How much will health insurance cost me through an Exchange? If you buy health insurance though an Exchange, the amount you pay will depend on several factors, including your income, family size and subsidy eligibility. Find an insurance agent you can trust to help guide you through the process. 9. Does it cost more to use a licensed insurance agent to help with enrolling in the Marketplace Exchange and what are the advantages? No, it does not cost you more to use a licensed insurance agent to assist you with enrolling in the Marketplace Exchange. The premiums are set and are the same whether you use a licensed agent or not, although there are significant benefits to you in seeking help from a licensed insurance agent and a Certified Healthcare Reform Specialist®, CHRS. 10. What is a Certified Healthcare Reform Specialist®? A Certified Healthcare Reform Specialist®, CHRS, is a professional designation that is earned and confirms that a professional has an educational and competitive edge in staying on top of the rules, regulations and interpretations of the Affordable Care Act. The designation is earned by extensive training and knowledge of the Affordable Care Act, along with mandatory testing requirements. The program and the designation are endorsed by the Health Care Reform Center and Policy Institute and Healthcare Reform Magazine. A Certified Health Care Reform Specialist has an in-depth knowledge of health insurance, benefit designs and the Affordable Care Act. A CHRS can help you with determining your subsidy eligibility, comparing plans, benefits and premiums. They will ensure you have a good knowledge of the plan you’ve purchased on the Exchange 11. Are my dependents required to have coverage under health care reform? Yes. Your dependents must have minimum essential insurance coverage unless they are exempt. The exceptions are (1) not a U.S. Citizen or lawfully present alien, (2) incarcerated, or (3) qualifies for a religious exemption. You will pay a penalty for every month that your dependent does not have minimum essential coverage. If you file taxes jointly with a spouse, both of you would be responsible for the penalty. 12. What are Essential Benefits? Essential Benefits are benefits that ALL plans in the Exchange must cover as well as employer-sponsored group health plans. They include: (1)doctor visits, (2) outpatient services, (3)emergency services, (4)hospitalization, (5)maternity and newborn care, (6)mental health and substance abuse disorder services, (7)prescription drug coverage, (8)rehabilitative services and devices, (9)laboratory services, (10) preventive and wellness services, (11) chronic disease management, and (12)pediatric services, including oral and vision care. 13. What is Minimum Essential Coverage? The type of coverage an individual needs to have to meet the individual responsibility requirement under the Affordable Care Act. This includes individual market policies, job-based coverage, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, TRICARE and certain other coverages. 14. Does the information on my tax return change because of health care reform? Yes. After 2013, you will be required to prove health care coverage on your tax return each year. Your health insurance provider or employer will also have to submit information to the IRS. 15. How can I get more information or help enrolling in a plan? Contact me. I am available to assist in helping to enroll in the Marketplace Exchange in all parishes in the State of Louisiana.

The Best Emergency Care is Closer Than You Think Glenwood Emergency Services ment times that are significantly better than the state average. “Seeing patients quickly is vital to providing optimal patient care,” said Ron Elder, GRMC CEO. “We are striving to provide a high level of care, while addressing the growing problem of long emergency room waits. At Glenwood Regional Medical Center your emergency is our emergency.” Fully Accredited Cycle IV Chest Pain Center
A
t some point in a your lifetime, it is very likely that you will be faced with a medical emergency, such as an injury, life threatening illness, potential heart attack or stroke. During those crucial moments, the hospital you choose for emergency treatment is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. More and more each year, a patient’s chief complaint when they go to their local emergency room isn’t about their illness or injury, it is about the time it takes to be seen and treated. In addition to adding skilled ER doctors, Glenwood has invested in technologies and systems to improve patient flow through the system. Through innovations in care like bedside registration, FAST TRACK injury care, InQuicker® online registration for minor emergencies, and computerized patient records, Glenwood is posting patient treat-
The Glenwood Chest Pain Center received full Cycle IV accreditation because it has consistently demonstrated expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. It is the only fully accredited Cycle IV Chest Pain Center in Northeast Louisiana. Expertise in emergency care and heart care are brought together to rapidly assess and treat patients to reduce the risk of a heart attack related death. Well-coordinated processes help us move the patient quickly from the assessment to treatment phase. Your heart attack treatment may indicate that you must go straight from the emergency department to the cardiac catheterization lab to be treated with an angioplasty procedure where a balloon is used to open blocked arteries. Because of our advanced technology, highly trained staff, and time saving protocols, Glenwood heart patients are moving from the ER to the cardiac catheterization lab in 65 minutes or less on average. Emergency STEMI Program Saves Lives A STEMI is the most severe and common type of heart attack in which the coronary artery is blocked by a clot. As a result, the heart muscle being supplied by the affected artery
begins to die. Rapid transport to Glenwood for percutaneous intervention (PCI), commonly referred to as angioplasty, is crucial to the survivability of a heart attack. Experts say the sooner that a patient is treated to relieve the blockage causing the STEMI, the better the outcome. Glenwood’s door to balloon time (measured from the time the patient enters the hospital, to the time the balloon is inflated in the coronary artery) for STEMI patients continues to be under 90 minutes (the national benchmark), with some less than 60 minutes. Through a partnership with Pafford AIR ONE, patients from most rural areas and hospitals in North Louisiana can be flown directly to the GRMC Cath Lab in under 90 minutes. Patients that cannot reach PCI in time will be delivered “clot busting” drugs by the Pafford AIR ONE Flight Medic and Nurse. Before the STEMI Program was put into place, only cardiologists could activate the cath lab. If someone came into the ER with chest pain, they would get triaged and worked up by a nurse. An ECG would be performed and presented to an ER doctor for evaluation. If he or she thought the patient was having a STEMI, they would call a cardiologist to confirm. If a STEMI was verified, then the cardiologist would be called in and the cath lab would be activated. Now Pafford can call a Glenwood ER doctor and ask for field activation by following a STEMI Flow Chart protocol. With earlier activations, door-to-balloon times have drastically decreased. The difference is improved performance times, and most importantly, improved outcomes. For more information about Glenwood’s Emergency Services and fully accredited Cycle IV Chest Pain Center, call the toll free WELL LINE at 877-726-WELL (9355) or visit www.GRMC.com. Dr. Toby Frost Joins Oglesby Financial Group Dr. Toby Frost has joined the Oglesby Financial Group as their new Chief Operating Officer. He transitioned to the boutique wealth management firm from First West Church (First Baptist West Monroe) where he served as Executive Pastor in the areas of management, human resources, and finance. “It has been a privilege to serve at First West for over six years because they do such a good job of helping people,” stated Frost. “It is that same legendary emphasis on uniquely serving the public and a passion for caring for clients that attracted me to the Oglesby Financial Group.” Dr. Frost was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky and grew up in Europe and the southern region of the United States. He received his bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC and his master’s degree from South-

eastern Seminary at Wake Forest. Frost also has an earned doctorate degree in leadership from Midwestern Baptist Theological seminary in the area of corporate ethics. Dr. Frost is a published author of books, manuals, journal articles and other materials in seven languages. His wife, Susan is working as the general director of an upcoming city festival in our area. She is the also author of several books and manuals, is talented in administration, event planning, and customer care.
ment firms in the industry. Each and every client of the firm is an individual, and their sophisticated strategies are obsessively crafted and customized to meet every need. “
We searched long and hard to find just the right person. Dr. Frost brings with him decades of experience in leadership but most importantly, he has an impeccable reputation and a massive following of people whose lives he has touched through years. - Darren Oglesby
The Frost’s have three children. Their oldest daughter Taylor lives in Atlanta, GA where she is an advertising account executive for Comcast/ Xfinity. Their other daughter Perry also resides in Atlanta, GA where she directs the Atlanta Mystery Theatre as one of the youngest theatre directors in the US. She recently starred as the female lead in the feature film “New Hope” from R-Squared Productions. The Frost’s youngest child Roddey is in his senior year at LA Tech University in Electrical Engineering. Frost stated that, like many others are, he was drawn to the Oglesby Financial Group for several reasons. “The first thing that gets your attention is the amazing experience they provide for their clients in helping them live a better life. You truly feel special and honored when you walk through the door at the Oglesby Financial Group.” “The second element was the reputation of the firm and the vast expertise and depth of the team,” stated Frost. “Financial advisors from all across the U.S. travel to Monroe or listen to Darren speak nationally just to get a glimpse of how the firm operates in becoming one of the top wealth manage-
According to Frost, the third and perhaps most important reason is Darren Oglesby himself, the founder and president of the firm. “For over twenty years he has grown the firm through excellence, vision and dedication that has culminated into multiple industry leading awards and developed a wealth management practice like no other. From the top tier strategies they help clients employ to the unique experience they provide, he has just built something different and extraordinary,” he stated. “Darren is truly an asset to our city and region.” When asked about the firm’s decision to choose Frost to take the role of Chief Operating Officer, Darren Oglesby had this to say. “This is a very important role in our firm. We searched long and hard to find just the right person. Dr. Frost brings with him decades of experience in leadership but most importantly, he has an impeccable reputation and a massive following of people whose lives he has touched through years. It takes a special person to make that kind of an impact on the lives of so many. We felt his leadership, character and passion to help others fit perfectly with our team and the mission of the firm.”

love life, family, and the outdoors. I had the gastric sleeve surgery a little over a year ago, and I just feel like a brand new person.
Q. What motivated you to have bariatric surgery? A. I was 20 years old and weighed 418 pounds. I knew I had to do something or my life was going to be hard—and possibly shortened—due to increased health risks.
Q. How long had you been struggling with obesity prior to your surgery? A. I had been struggling with obesity for 4-5 years. I missed out on fun things
with friends because of my weight.
Q. What would you say to someone who is considering bariatric surgery, but is nervous about doing so?
A. I would tell them to do it. It may seem
scary, but the benefits and results are well worth it.
Q. What health conditions did you have prior to surgery? A. I experienced sore knees and shortness of breath. Now I don’t experience any of that.
Q. Tell us about a moment in which you were most proud of your weight loss success.
A. I was proud when a long time
friend said they didn't even recognize me. It gave me a sense of accomplishment.
