DRESDEN 2011 DIRECTOR DR WEDEL PRESENTS HIS LATEST PLAY German director Dr Dieter Wedel is bringing theatre back to the Zwinger in Dresden, which counts as one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture, with the play ‘The Mistresses of the King’ about Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. The total budget for this production, at 2.2 million euros, is as large as that of the famous Dresden Music Festival. The Managing Director of Dresden Event GmbH, Annett Reeder, is expecting audiences of some 30,000.

Advanced ticket sales have already begun, with tickets priced at between 45 and 87 euros. There are 12,000 advanced bookings to date. The idea of using the Zwinger to stage plays is not new. It was used already for comedies during the Baroque period. The stands can seat an audience of 1,860 and the play will be staged on the area in front of the Wall Pavilion. If the weather is bad, performances will take place in the Kulturpalast. The Chair of the Dresden Tourist Association, Jeffrey Pötzsch, hopes the festival will attract tourists to the city.

The play will be performed daily from 5th to 21st August 2011.

Das Gesamtbudget beträgt 2,2 Millionen Euro und ist damit genauso gross wie das der renommierten Dresdner Musikfestspiele. Die Geschäftsführerin der Dresden Event GmbH, Annett Reeder, rechnet mit etwa 30.000 Besuchern. Der Kartenvorverkauf hat bereits begonnen, die Tickets kosten zwischen 45 und 87 Euro. 12.000 Vorbestellungen gibt es derzeit. Die Idee, den Zwinger zu bespielen, ist nicht neu. Er wurde schon in der Barockzeit für Lustspiele genutzt. Auf der Zuschauertribüne finden 1860 Gäste Platz, bespielt wird das Areal vor dem Wallpavillon. Bei Unwetter kann die Aufführung in den Kulturpalast verlegt werden. Der Vorsitzende des Tourismusverbandes Dresden, Jeffrey Pötzsch, hofft, dass die Festspiele zu einem Touristenmagneten werden. SPAIN’S CROWN PRINCE AND PRINCESS deliberately delayed their departure for Madrid by one day in the summer in order to visit Palma and find out in detail about the campaign to have the Tramuntana Mountains named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Tramuntana Mountains are Spain’s only candidate in 2010 for this prestigious title.

They stretch more than 90km across the whole north-west of the Island and are valued as much by philosophers and artists, as by the walkers, cyclists and holiday-makers who love to explore this area’s spectacular landscape.

The Island Council also highlights the cultural importance of their Islamic and Christian heritage. There has been an enthusiastic response to the application from the inhabitants of Mallorca, and now Felipe and Letizia also want to personally pledge their support so that next July, when the international UNESCO committee makes its decision about the applications, the Tramuntana Mountains will be ‘crowned’ with success.

CLEAR THE STAGE FOR A REALLY GREAT PERFORMANCE. Had Guido Maria Kretschmer not decided to give up his medical studies after a few semesters to dedicate himself to his true passion, namely fashion, the world of women (and of course men as well, who are allowed to enjoy the sight) would be much the poorer!

He trained in Spain and France and gained further experience in a number of large fashion houses throughout Europe. Since 1987, the year in which he established his first label, he has clothed various airlines such as Emirate Airlines and travel agents such as TUI and Hapag Lloyd within the field of corporate fashion. This was recognised in 2002, when he won the ‘World of TUI Design Award’. But in the long run ‘just’ designing uniforms was not enough for this creative mind. So, in 2004 he established his ‘Guido Maria Couture’ fashion label, with which he rapidly made a name for himself among his peers. His creations are also highly prized by celebrities. His gowns (to describe them as dresses doesn’t feel quite right) are worn by, among others, German actresses Martina Gedeck and Meret Becker – who describes them as “sensual dreams in fabric”, and also by international stars such as Charlize Theron and Jane Seymour. But even this is not enough for him. He is also in great demand as a costume designer for film and the theatre. Which again is easy to understand when one sees how skilfully his fashions set the stage for the wearer...

BÜHNE FREI FÜR DEN GANZ GROSSEN AUFTRITT. Was wäre der Damenwelt (und natürlich den Herren, die sich an diesem Anblick erfreuen dürfen) entgangen, hätte Guido Maria Kretschmer nicht schon nach wenigen Semestern sein Medizinstudium aufgegeben, um sich seiner wahren Leidenschaft, der Mode, zu widmen! Er absolvierte eine Ausbildung in Spanien und Frankreich und sammelte in diversen grossen Häusern Europas weitere Erfahrungen. Seit 1987, dem Jahr der Gründung seines ersten eigenen Labels, stattet er im Rahmen von Corporate Fashion diverse Fluggesellschaften wie Emirate Airlines und Reiseveranstalter wie TUI und Hapag Lloyd aus. 2002 wurde er dafür mit dem „World of TUI Design Award“ geehrt.

Doch „nur“ das Schneidern von Uniformen war dem kreativen Kopf auf Dauer zu wenig. Daher gründete er 2004 sein Label „Guido Maria Couture“, mit dem er sich in Fachkreisen schnell einen Namen machte. Auch die Prominenz schätzt seine Kreationen. So tragen seine Roben (Kleider mag man ja fast nicht dazu sagen) u.a. Martina Gedeck, Meret Becker – die sie als „sinnliche Stoffträume“ bezeichnet, aber auch internationale Stars wie Charlize Theron oder Jane Seymour. Selbst das genügt ihm jedoch noch nicht: Er ist ausserdem als gefragter Kostümbildner für Film und Theater tätig.

Was wiederum leicht nachzuvollziehen ist, wenn man sieht, wie gekonnt er mit seiner Mode die jeweilige Trägerin „in Szene“ setzt ...

“Anyone can become famous. Staying famous is a bit harder.” Jim Kerr proves his point by touring with his solo project Lostboy.

T

he founder and driving force behind Glasgow band Simple Minds can look back on a successful career in music that extends over three decades.

Many of the group’s albums have topped the charts in the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. Their first records were strongly influenced by punk, but they then went on to compose songs that were more danceable, easier on the ear and therefore had a greater public appeal.

Global sales of Simple Minds records and CDs now exceed 30 million, which puts them up there alongside U2 and Depeche Mode as one of the most successful groups to have

emerged from the British Isles . The song that established their international reputation in 1985, ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’, still gets plenty of air time on the radio. Multitalented lyricist, composer and singer Jim Kerr has stamped his own personality on the song with his unmistakable voice. Over time, his lyrics became increasingly politicised as the band took up the cause of Amnesty International, appeared at the Live Aid Concert in Philadelphia and sent out a heart-felt message about the conflict in Northern Ireland with their best-known hit, Belfast Child. So they are anything but “simple minded” really. In the nineties and at the start of the new millennium, the band embarked on a series of massive tours, the most recent of

which was the Graffiti Soul Tour to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

More recently, Jim Kerr has felt drawn to his own youth and its associated memories. With his first solo album, he has realised his dream of expressing the energy, open-mindedness and curiosity of his alter ego as a teenager and young adult. And in May of this year, he set off on a tour to showcase his ‘Lostboy AKA Jim Kerr’ album. One of his stop-offs during the month of August was in Mallorca, where he delighted his fans in a performance at the Hotel St Regis Mardavall in Costa d’en Blanes.

In the coastal resort of Taormina, Jim Kerr owns the delightful Villa Angela Hotel, from which guests have a spectacular view of Mount Etna – but who knows what would have happened if he had visited the two islands in reverse order? On the website of his hotel, he writes that he fell in love with Sicily at first sight. Maybe so, but we can’t help thinking think that Mallorca would have had the same effect.

Leaving that aside, his ‘Lostboy AKA Jim Kerr’ album obviously had to be recorded in the UK, at the legendary Rockfield Studio in Monmouth . Although the music is reminiscent of Simple Minds, it also comes across as fresh-

er, more youthful and full of joie de vivre. A number of critics have voiced their regret that Kerr waited till he was 50 before reprising his youth. The positive feedback from the other group members (“They’d quite like to be up there on the stage with me, but then it wouldn’t be a solo project”) and Jim’s fans make it clear that this is not just some bored rock star indulging a whim: the power and energy that emerge from all the songs are proof enough of the love and dedication that went into the making of this debut album: “They may have revolutionised the technology that goes into the music industry over the last 30 years, but at the end of the day, it’s all about four people coming together searching for a feeling and a melody.” Kerr’s own favourite from the Lostboy album is The Wait. Well now the wait is over...

Seit nunmehr über dreissig Jahren ist der Kopf und Gründer der Simple Minds aus dem schottischen Glasgow mit seiner Band im Musikgeschäft erfolgreich. Etliche Alben der Simple Minds stürmten nicht nur in England, sondern auch im restlichen Europa, in Kanada und Australien die Charts. Die ersten Platten waren noch stark vom Punk beeinflusst, später jedoch wurde die Musik tanzbarer, gefälliger und somit massentauglich.

Bestimmt kann sich jeder noch gut an den Hit „Don t you“ (forget about me) erinnern, mit dem die Band 1985 international bekannt wurde. Jim Kerr, Texter, Komponist und Sänger in Personalunion, drückt seither mit seiner unverwechselbaren Stimme jedem Song einen einzigartigen Stempel auf. “VERBIER IS ABOUT EXCLUSIVE LUXURY LEISURE”

riginally from England, Andy Turner is not only the Managing Director of the CHALET SPA Group, located in the British Channel Islands, but also maintains an active interest in the business and the team looking after CHALET SPA guests. Andy has a passion for mountains, skiing, the sea and design. After graduating in international commercial law, he moved to London where he specialised as a corporate lawyer, advising a range of interna-

tional businesses. In 1996, he moved to Jersey in the British Channel Islands, to set up and build a corporate business for the Abacus Financial Services Group. In 2005, Andy and the other owners of Abacus sold this business to Royal Bank of Canada. Today, he is involved in a range of entrepreneurial activities and divides his time between the mountains and the sea. Andy developed the idea for the CHALET SPA project in 2005. The CHALET SPA concept, brand and trademark, and also its extension the “S” mark (for Snow, Skiing, Sun, Sea, Sand, Safari, Sky-diving, Space and Sport)

have been developed since 2006. It was in Verbier that Andy decided to build the flagship residence CHALET SPA Verbier.

The chalet concept was developed by Andy Turner working together with architect Patrick Polli. The larger of this new group's two chalets thus far could have come from a James Bond movie – stylised yet cosy, a real WOW! Within the space of 3,890 square feet, there are five en-suite bedrooms, including one room with a connecting door to another (ideal for young children), a see-through glass encased fireplace, and from the master bed, you have

I have always been passionate about the mountains and sea. I first dreamt of acquiring a chalet about 10 years ago. My goal was to create an opportunity to change direction after I hit age 40 toward a business interest which was connected to lifestyle and which allowed me to spend more quality time with my family and friends. Having spent 5 to 10 years looking at different mountain resorts, I settled on Verbier, Switzerland, but it was only when I found the location in which I developed Chalet Spa Verbier that I became really excited. My research in 2006 suggested Verbier would receive significant investment over the coming period, and the land I found was the last plot in one of the most exclusive enclaves of Verbier. The views were undisturbed, with sun from sunup to sundown, and no building can be constructed in line of sight. It was very quiet, yet within 100 metres of a lift station

sive luxury brand, adopting ‘Chalet Spa’ and the ‘S’ shape for services and products connected to sport, which could in the future be applied in other ways to utilise the goodwill we develop.

Is it more of a labour of love or a serious money-making exercise?

Throughout my career, I have always believed that to achieve the maximum return requires attention to detail, commitment, personal investment in terms of time, effort, and funding.

I have treated this project with that same ethos.

It is a serious project at the very top end of the luxury market, designed to deliver return on investment, both at an income level and in terms of the potential for a capital exit downstream. The future scope is to develop the brand so it stands alone, and end up in a position to realise value from the business in any of its different guises, directly or indirectly from capital exit, earnings, franchising or merchandising

At the time the exchange rate of pounds sterling to Swiss francs was between 1:2.36 and 1:2.49, and my gut feeling was this would be a great time to buy Swiss currency. All these factors left me feeling that there was a scope to develop a new business that would enable me to use my skills in a different direction.

What was your vision for the business?

To take it one step at a time, first to develop and consolidate Chalet Spa Verbier as one of the most exclusive luxury chalets in the world, simultaneously to design and develop an exclu-

How do you divide your time now?

Chalet Spa is a lifestyle business. I have created office facilities at my Swiss home, in Jersey, and on my motor yacht MoonStone, currently moored in Ibiza. I am always available to oversee the business from whichever location I am at, 24/7, located in pleasant surroundings, unlike being in an office or on a plane, as I would have been as a lawyer in the past.

At the top end of the market, do clients tend to be more demanding?

Attention to detail, empathy, response times, and quality are all important to our clients and guests, who lead busy lifestyles and are themselves owners of major international businesses or are celebrities or VIPs and international travellers, like myself. From my own business experience, I can empathise with their desires, and our objective is to provide the most exclusive luxurious experience possible in truly magnificent private homes.

How do you market the project?

Our marketing focus is on a few specific locations, which include Russia, Eastern Europe and Asia. With more than 65% of our clients coming from these countries, the location of our flagship property in Verbier, Switzerland, and the way we tailor a five star service to suit our guests works well.

How does the company stay fresh and its chalets remain in the ‘must-stay-in’ category?

In Verbier, there are constraints on who can purchase land and on the type of development, with a maximum of 3 or 4 levels and the outside of any chalet having to be constructed from timber – hence the reason Verbier has retained its charm and character. Over the last three years, Verbier has become one of the most popular luxury mountain resorts in the world with fantastic on-piste and off-piste skiing and snowboarding, and a great nightlife.

Our Russian and Asian clients combine business in Geneva with exclusive luxury leisure and relaxation at Chalet Spa Verbier, combined with the ability to fly in by their own private jet to our local private airfield at Sion, just 45 minutes from Chalet Spa Verbier. It goes without saying that the interior design, art, sculptures and lighting incorporated in Chalet

Spa Verbier have been carefully selected from amongst some of the world’s leading interior designers, to a level not normally associated with mountain chalets made available for rental to the public. The technology budget was also substantial, running to many millions, both in terms of the audiovisual systems, as well as the heating and air quality management systems that regulate the moisture content, allowing the air to be humidified to close to sea level conditions at an altitude of 1,600 metres.

In the Spa, the indoor infinity pool benefits from a specialist Siemens system that regulates the water temperature, pool floor, air humidity, and ambient air temperature to achieve a comfortable balance at high altitude, where incumbent air pressures have an impact.

How would you sell the joys of Verbier to someone who only holidays on the beach?

At Chalet Spa Verbier, we have purposefully developed a Spa with indoor pool with a view like no other in Verbier, a gym that takes the same view, two hot tubs in different locations including a handmade Canadian cedar wood hot tub, therapy room, sauna, Hammam, cinema, and billiard room, so that guests who do not wish to ski, can simply find another activity on site. Ich war immer begeistert von den Bergen und dem Meer. Erstmals träumte ich vor zehn Jahren davon, ein Chalet zu erwerben. Mein Ziel war es nach meinem 40. Geburtstag die Gelegenheit zu ergreifen, ein Geschäft mit Lebensqualität zu verbinden und mehr Zeit für meine Familie und Freunde zu haben. Nach etlichen Recherchen stiess ich 2006 auf Verbier, das in der nächsten Zeit erhebliche Investitionen zu erwarten hatte – und wo ich

mein Vorhaben auf dem letzten Grundstück in einer der exklusivsten Lagen des Ortes in die Tat umsetzen wollte. Die Sicht war unvergleichlich und unverbaubar, mit Sonne von morgens bis abends. Sehr ruhig, und dennoch nur 100 Meter vom Lift und wenige Minuten zum Zentrum. Zu der Zeit lag der Wechselkurs zwischen Pfund und Schweizer Franken zwischen 1:2.36 und 1:2.49, und mein Bauchgefühl sagte mir, dies sei grossartig, um in die Schweizer Währung zu investieren. Basierend auf all diesen Faktoren spürte ich, das war meine Chance für ein neues Geschäft, das es mir ermöglichen würde, meine Fähigkeiten auf andere Weise zu nutzen.

Gleichzeitig wollte ich eine Luxusmarke kreieren, die als „Chalet Spa“ und mit dem „S“ für Dienstleistungen und Produkte rund um den Sport stehen und sich zukünftig auch für andere Geschäftsideen verwenden lassen sollte.

Meine Vision ist es, Chalet Spa als eigenständige Marke zu etablieren.

Ist es eher eine Herzensangelegenheit oder doch der Wunsch, ernsthaft Geld zu verdienen?

Während meiner ganzen Karriere war ich immer davon überzeugt, dass eine maximale Rendite nur durch Liebe zum Detail und grosses persönliches Engagement in Form von Zeit, Aufwand und Investitionen zu erreichen sei.

Für dieses seriöse Projekt – am oberen Ende des Luxus-Segments – galt und gilt dasselbe Ethos. Die Investition soll sich auszahlen, sowohl vom Einkommen her als auch in Bezug auf die Wertsteigerung im Falle einer potenziellen Veräusserung. Für die Zukunft sehe ich eine eigenständige Marke, die direkt oder indirekt finanziellen Nutzen in unterschiedlichsten Facetten generiert.

Wie teilen Sie sich jetzt Ihre Zeit ein?

Chalet Spa ist ein Lifestyle-Unternehmen. Ich unterhalte Büros in meiner Schweizer Heimat, in Jersey und auf meiner Motoryacht, die zurzeit vor Ibiza liegt. Wo immer ich bin, ich habe an sieben Tagen 24 Stunden lang den Überblick – und das in angenehmer Umgebung.

Die meisten Anfragen bearbeite ich persönlich, um bestmöglichen Service zu gewährleisten.

Daneben kümmere ich mich um mein Personal, unterstützt von einer Führungskraft mit Sitz in Verbier.

n October, for the second year in a row, the Franck Muller Group used Monaco as the stylish setting for presenting the latest collections of timepieces from its exclusive brands. The group includes well-known names such as Pierre Kunz, Martin Braun, European Company Watch, Barthelay, Rodolphe, Backes & Strauss, Pierre-Michel Golay and Smalto. Cvstos, the brand founded five years ago by Sassoun Sirmakes and Antonio Terranova, was of course also represented. This keeps everything in the family, as Sassoun Sirmakes is the son of Vartan Sirmakes, the co-owner of Franck Muller from the outset. And as always there was an exchange of views about the future evolution of complications whose technology is taking perfection to the very top. Watch enthusiasts and passionate collectors from all over the world travelled to the ‘World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie’ at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco to examine these precious pieces. Among those coming from Mallorca were Prince Sayn-Wittgenstein and his wife, as well as Albert Uhlemayr and Jürgen Aurin. Bedros Varjabetyan, who is in charge of sales and distribution of Cvstos in Germany and Spain, plans to open a concept store in Mallorca’s most upmarket marina, Port Adriano, in 2011.

BILLY’S FASHION SHOW FOR RTL HEIDI LÜBKE HANDED OVER 30,000 EUROS TO THE RTL FUNDRAISING MARATHON 2010 saw the German television channel RTL hold its fundraising marathon for the fifteenth year in a row. This year Heidi Lübke was equally celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of Billy’s Boutique in Mallorca. “So the idea of raising 1,000 euros for every year that Billy’s had been open was born. In the end we actually raised double that amount.” In September, in Port Andratx, Heidi Lübke handed over a cheque for 30,000 euros to Wolfram Kons, head of the RTL children’s charity ‘Stiftung RTL - Wir helfen Kindern e.V.’. Estefania Küster, who had visited an aid project in Ukraine for RTL and Dr Dieter Wedel were also there to support her. As a result RTL invited Heidi Lübke to Germany to take part in the television programme in November, in which celebrities raise money for children in need over a 24-hour-period. Artists such as Xavier Naidoo, who was staging a benefit concert in Mannheim, Annie Lennox and Michael Bublé are lending their support to the RTL initiative.

“Every sixth child in Germany is growing up in poverty,” says Wolfram Kons who sometimes takes on mad bets himself for this good cause, such as his daring stunt jump from the RTL building which he was challenged to do by Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz during the filming of ‘Knight & Day’, for a bet of 50,000 euros.

Andreas Heider, Engel & Völkers - Basically positive! The past few weeks have seen stronger movement in the market, although buying behaviour has changed significantly over the past two years.

Customers are not so quick to buy and have become more critical or, to put it another way, more cautious.

As we are currently in a buyer's market, the customer has the upper hand and is sometimes prepared to play a waiting game. This means that it will take some time before a tangible revival can be seen in sales figures.

We are aware of this, and because we recognised it at an early stage and the company has a professional approach, we are well prepared and are going into 2011 with a positive attitude.

Grundsätzlich sehen wir die Perspektiven für das neue Jahr positiv! Wir spüren in den letzten Wochen wieder verstärkt Bewegung im Markt, obwohl sich das Kaufverhalten in den letzten zwei Jahren deutlich verändert hat. Die Kaufentscheidungen werden nicht mehr so schnell getroffen, die Kunden sind kritischer geworden oder anders formuliert: bedachter. Und da wir aktuell einen Käufermarkt haben, ist der Kunde am längeren Hebel und sitzt manchmal auch eine Entscheidung aus.

Somit dauert es eine gewisse Zeit, bis die fühlbare Belebung sich in den Umsätzen deutlich macht. All das spüren wir, und aufgrund des frühzeitigen Erkennens und der professionellen Aufstellung unseres Unternehmens sind wir bestens gerüstet und sehen dem Jahr 2011 positiv entgegen.

Fashion buyers are looking for individuality and excellent quality. It is a matter for satisfaction that the right clothing culture is what is in demand: smart dresses, perfectly tailored jackets and ‘Upper Casual’, the cultivated casual style which also includes lightly distressed jeans.

2010 is making up for the restraint in consumption seen during the 2009 economic crisis. Our label saw an increase once again in buying on the part of foreign markets, particularly Russia.

Judging by consumer behaviour, Germany’s positive figures for total exports will continue in 2011. But I see consumers becoming more critical in their shopping habits than in the past. Women only buy what they really like. For example, lilac tones are still in; but change the nuances and they become plum, amethyst or purple. Women also want accents to go with black and the neutral tones I prefer, such as beige, taupe and mauve. What is important is getting the right mix – of styles, materials and colours.

For 2011, I see fashion becoming more groomed. Casual means a successful combination of casual and elegant. The future of fashion also means a preference for ‘multiple choice’. Thus a gold sequin dress can be worn smartly during the day with a white shirt and chinos, and then be worn on its own in the evening to make a dramatic impression.

Aus der zurückliegenden Verkaufssaison Frühjahr/Sommer 2011 kann ich ein positives Fazit ziehen. Individualität und Hochwertigkeit waren bei den Modeeinkäufern gefragt. Erfreulich, dass richtige Bekleidungskultur gesucht wird: smarte Dresses, perfekt geschneiderte Jacken und 'Upper Casual', der gepflegte lässige Stil, zu dem auch die leicht zerstörte Jeans gehört.

Die Zurückhaltung im Konsum durch die Krise 2009 konnte in 2010 aufgeholt werden, für unsere Marke waren auch die Auslandsmärkte, insbesondere Russland, wieder in Einkaufslaune.

Die positiven Zahlen aus dem Gesamtexport Deutschlands werden sich 2011 im Verbraucherverhalten fortsetzen. Aber ich sehe die Konsumentinnen kritischer in ihrem Einkaufsverhalten als früher. Frau kauft nur, was ihr wirklich gefällt. Beispielsweise setzt sich der Lilaton fort, verändert die Nuancierung, heisst dann Plum, Amethyst oder Purple. Zu Schwarz und den von mir präferierten subtilen Non-Colours wie Beige, Taupe, Mauve wünscht sich die Frau auch Akzente. Wichtig ist die richtige Mischung – in den Styles, den Materialien und den Farben.

Für 2011 sehe ich eine verstärkte Gepflegtheit in der Mode. Casual bedeutet die gelunge Kombination von Lässigem mit Elegantem. Die Zukunft der Mode heisst auch 'multiple choice' , so wird das goldene Paillettenkleid tagsüber adrett mit weisser Bluse und Chinos getragen, am Abend wird es zum Solitär für den aufsehenerregenden Auftritt.

GEARING UP FOR THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL KATE MENTINK ENCOURAGES ALL RESIDENTS TO VOTE IN THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS IN MAY 2011 Kate Mentink first arrived on the Island 30 years ago from her native Scotland and is now a councillor in Calvià Town Hall with special responsibility for Foreign Citizens, as well as Regional Responsibility in the Partido Popular for all projects related to the Non Spanish European Citizens of the Balearic Islands.

Coming from a business background – more specifically the hotel and retail industry – Kate initially found working in the public sector and in politics quite difficult, a bigger step than she had anticipated. It took her several months to get used to the different ways of doing things in local government, as against in a private company. She had previously been selfemployed or at least in charge of the establishment, whereas now she found herself just part of the system.

There are local elections coming up next year on 22nd May, and Kate is keen to encourage participation. She says residents from other European countries should vote to be heard. The more votes there are from UK or German or other residents, the easier her job will be to fight for projects that benefit them.

Only those on the electoral roll (censo) and the padrón municipal may vote. If you are a resident of the Island and have not yet registered, you need to visit your local town hall (ayuntamiento), taking along proof of identity (i.e. your passport) and of your address, and to complete a registration form (censo electoral de ciudadanos de la unió europea). The closing date for the election is 12th April 2011.

Kate is also keen to encourage business.

She is especially interested in medium- and small-sized enterprises. The perfect start-up for Mallorca, in her opinion, would be in the service sector – tourism certainly, but not exclusively so. Information technology and design – fabrics, fashion and so on – would be very suitable. Kate’s work on behalf of the yachting industry also keeps her very busy. In all, she handles around 25,000 enquiries per year, which convinces her that there is a clear need for a new Government ministry to deal with requests and help new businesses plus a European business centre. She concedes that the

A company in Hamburg, for example, that delivers to Spain, or a haulage company that carries goods between two or more states, inevitably operate in a number of different legal systems. “Until now, it has been above all Anglo-Saxon law firms that have set themselves up internationally,” says Scheffler. “But the philosophy of our firm means offering to clients who demand it, legal advice across borders.”

Scheffler is well established transnationally in seven locations, with branches in Hamburg, Berlin, Zürich and Alicante. A branch has just been opened in Paris – dealing with German, European and international commercial law in yet another key state in Europe.

In Mallorca, activity concentrates essentially on two areas: a large number of private realestate clients require advice at the highest level – from questions regarding purchase and ownership through to inheritance law. The other

Germany, and for a variety of different reasons are moving abroad, including to Spain,” says Scheffler. “For them, it is a matter of their whole way of life, from their work and matters of family law through to property rights.”

The crisis? The transnational legal business of the Scheffler practice was not affected. “In Spain alone we recorded a growth of 25 percent in the 2009 financial year,” says Managing Director Scheffler. In Germany, the growth was even higher. Legal security is a commodity that clearly does not rise and fall with the state of the economy.

Scheffler Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH has always chosen central locations and the best addresses for its branches. In Palma, it chose offices in the central Placa Cort (12, 2˚) opposite the town hall, in the old town. These are headed by lawyer and abogada, Andrea Jakab. She comes originally from Hungary, and has studied in Constance, Wellington (New Zealand) and Alicante. She gained her

Spanish licence to practise law on the Costa Blanca, and is regarded as an expert in German-Spanish commercial law in particular, as well as European trademark, patent and design law. Jakab, the procurator of Scheffler Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, speaks German, Spanish, English and Hungarian and is a member of the Münchner Anwaltskammer and the Colegio de Abogados de Madrid. Her clients in Spain include, among others, a German entrepreneur who operates on behalf of the German government, individual ministers and third countries, a group of German investors who establish enterprises and buy and sell properties in Spain, an also a large number of other German companies who have engaged Scheffler Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH to pursue claims against Spanish partners.

In addition to advising and acting on behalf of their clients, Scheffler Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH also maintains close personal contacts with them. Among these are the ‘Mallorca Golf Challenge powered by Scheffler RA’. This tournament, which will be held for the third time in 2011, will take place on one of the best courses on the Island, and brings together – in addition to members of the law firm and its clients – a large number of VIPs. The second round of the tournament was held at the Son Gual golf course in June 2010, in aid of the children’s charity ‘dolphin aid’, and the German television presenter Juliane Hielscher, and actors Götz Otto and Bernd Herzsprung all took part. Donations to ‘dolphin aid’ provide so-called dolphin therapy to disabled children, and in 2008 the charity received an award from the ‘Germany - Land of Ideas’ initiative. ‘dolphin aid’ ambassador, Juliane Hielscher, had agreed to host the latest round of the ‘Mallorca Golf Challenge POWERED BY SCHEFFLER RA’. “dolphin aid is a cause close to my heart,” said Hielscher. Her fellow ambassadors, Herzsprung and Otto, emphasised that the charity “deserves all possible support” (Herzsprung), and that they were ”happy to be there for dolphin aid, just as often as possible” (Otto). Numerous VIPs are once again expected to take part in the 2011 tournament.

BODEGA BINIAGUAL “ESENCIAL” – THIS IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF BODEGA BINIAGUAL, AND THE REASON IT PRODUCES SUCH EXCEPTIONAL WINES utmost emphasis is place on quality and on handling the grapes with the greatest care, all the way from the bunch to the bottle. The vines are inspected regularly throughout the year so diseases can be detected at an early stage.

The Bodega has its own meteorological station to help with this: sensors on the plants record the strength of the sun’s rays and the wind speed, as well as measuring the rainfall and the moisture content of the soil. Monitoring these values is part of the daily routine. There is also the so-called green harvest which takes place between July and August. In this, only the best grapes are left on the vine. This gives them sufficient space to use the strength of the plant to develop their concentrated flavour.

Only 800g of grapes per vine are harvested, less than at other vineyards where it can be up to 2kg. Quality over quantity! And: you will search in vain for any chemicals here. Instead, manure from their own sheep is used as an ecological fertiliser. Biniagual wines are the result of the finest grapes, state-of-the-art technology in the cellar, meticulous work in the vineyard and the passion, expertise and consciousness of the importance of quality on the part of all those involved in the process. The

far beyond the borders of Mallorca. In 2007, the red wine ‘Finca Biniagual 2005’ was named best ‘Newcomer’ by five highly experienced oenologists at a blind tasting in Spain.

A special treat for all those who love red wine is the ‘Gran Verán 2005’ (Mantonegro and Shiraz). The ‘Veran Rosat’ and the fruity fresh ‘Blanc Veran’ are also extremely popular, with good reason. „ESENCIAL” - SO LAUTET DIE PHILOSOPHIE DER BODEGA BINIAGUAL, NACH DER AUSSERGEWÖHNLICHE WEINE ENTSTEHEN Essenziell sind die Trauben, auf die höchstes Augenmerk gelegt wird, denn auf ihnen basieren die einzigartigen Tropfen, die hier gekeltert werden. Die Bodega Biniagual ist ein Familienbetrieb, der seit 1999 auf traditionellem Boden wieder Wein anbaut und seit 2002 auch produziert. Bei der Entstehung der Weine setzt man bedingungslos auf Qualität und sorgfältigste Behandlung von der Rebe bis in die Flasche. Die Rebstöcke werden rund ums Jahr kontinuierlich inspiziert, um Krankheiten frühzeitig zu erkennen. Hilfreich ist dabei die eigene meteorologische Station: Sensoren an den

Pflanzen melden die Stärke der Sonneneinstrahlung und der Windgeschwindigkeit sowie Regenmenge und Feuchtigkeitsgehalt im Boden. Die Überwachung dieser Werte gehört mit zur täglichen Arbeit. Dazu kommt die so genannte grüne Ernte zwischen Juli und August. Da bleiben nur die besten Trauben am Stock und haben so ausreichend Platz, um mit der Kraft der Pflanze konzentrierte Aromen zu entwickeln. Pro Stock werden nur 800 g Trauben geerntet, weniger als bei anderen Kellereien, die bis zu 2 kg lesen. Qualität geht eben vor Quantität! Und: Chemische Mittel sucht man hier vergebens. Stattdessen wird der Mist von Schafen aus der hauseigenen Zucht für eine ökologische Düngung genutzt. BiniagualWeine sind das Ergebnis bester Trauben, modernster Technik im Keller, Akribie im Weinberg und der Passion, des Könnens und Qualitätsbewusstseins aller beteiligten Personen. So ist die Bodega besonders stolz, die erfahrensten Önologen der Balearen zum Team zu zählen. Alle Mitarbeiter werden das ganze Jahr über beschäftigt, denn in der ländlichen Idylle von Biniagual wird nicht nur Wein produziert, sondern auch Olivenöl. Der Wein ist indes das „Essenzielle“, weit über Mallorcas Grenzen bekannt – und berühmt: So wurde der Rotwein „Finca Biniagual 2005“ im Jahr 2007 von fünf hochkarätigen Önologen in Spanien bei einer Blindverkostung zum besten „Newcomer“ gekürt. hen the first Land Rover was unveiled by British car manufacturer Rover back in April 1948, its market position was still clearly defined: the rugged, boxy newcomer was an off-road vehicle modelled on the American jeep, designed and built for use in agriculture or on difficult terrain such as mud or desert sand. It was simply constructed with a welded ladder-frame chassis and hardy duralumin bodywork. And what’s more, it was affordable. An all-terrain vehicle for Britain and the whole world. This was the beginning of a long success story.

1970 saw the launch of the Range Rover, a luxury version of this versatile 4x4. It was still an all-terrain vehicle, but with considerably more comfort, design flair and prestige. And now, exactly forty years later, the latest Range Rover – the Evoque – has made its debut in Paris. Today, however, the car manufacturer would certainly not consider it appropriate to call it an ‘all-terrain’ vehicle, as the term Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) to describe a 4x4 has now found its way into common usage. A change in terminology that naturally follows a change in function. This class of vehicle is no longer the exclusive preserve of the British farmer to splash through puddles in; it is now promoted

from Berlin to the Bronx as an urban style and status symbol, and it is only with ambiguous irony that it is marketed as an ‘off-road’ vehicle.

The versatility of the Range Rover is borne out by its large number of famous owners, starting, as is to be expected, with Prince Charles and other members of the British royal family. And stars such as football icon David Beckham, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Jack Nicholson, as well as the Sultan of Brunei, also swear by the quality of this cult classic.

And when Pope John Paul II visited Great Britain, he was chauffeured around the Island in a Range Rover Classic, converted of course

into the bullet-proof ‘popemobile’.

That the new Range Rover Evoque should invoke the cult status of its predecessors, and not only in its name, can be seen in the stated aim of the Solihull (Birmingham) based company to put their very own distinctive modern stamp on the SUV class with this “smallest, lightest, most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever”.

Its sporty credentials once more come to the fore, and as regards the body, the intention to create a Land Rover crossover shines through, with the term coupé springing to mind. The beltline of the vehicle is even higher than on the good old off-road vehicle, but the distinctive tapering of the roof line towards the back nevertheless confirms this impression. The fact that the vehicle’s CO2 emission levels are claimed to come in below 130g/km and that its 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine and 6 -speed transmission are complemented by fuel-saving Transmission Idle Control makes it a worthy representative of the new generation of SUVs. And one that is not only more elegant, but also more environmentally friendly.

Dass zudem der CO2-Ausstoß bei unter 130 g/km liegen soll und das Auto mit seinem 2,2-LiterTurbodiesel-Motor und 6-Gang-Getriebe u.a. eine Verbrauch senkende Leerlaufsteuerung (‚Transmission Idle Control’) besitzt, macht es zum würdigen Vertreter einer neuen SUVGeneration. Der nicht nur schicker, sondern auch umweltfreundlicher daherkommt.

Die Zielsetzungen, die einst den ersten Land Rover begleiteten, wurden also im SUV- Zeitalter nicht aufgegeben, sondern Lifestyle-gemäß modifiziert. Schon 1948 sollte das Auto weltweit einsatzfähig sein – eine straffe, moderne Terminologie erklärt den Range Rover Evoque nun schlicht zum „Weltauto“.

Das nicht nur in 160 Ländern verkauft werden soll, sondern überall dort auch Millionen von Testkilometern absolviert hat, von Arktis über deutsche Autobahnen bis „Großstadtdschungel“. Und das ganz ohne die sonst üblichen Abschottungsmaßnahmen: In zehn Weltmetropolen (u.a. New York, Berlin, Madrid) wurden Prototypen des Evoque ganz offen ausgestellt, lackiert mit GPS-Mustern der jeweiligen Stadt. Und die Testfahrten auf dem Nürburgring sind bereits jetzt legendär! Überdies hat Land Rover, bevor der Evoque im Herbst 2011 für ab 35.000 Euro auf den Markt kommt, kürzlich noch eine „sehr talentierte englische Modedesignerin“ als „Kreativ-Designdirektorin“ verpflichtet. Die Dame heißt Victoria Beckham, und sie soll vor allem beim Design der Sondermodelle behilflich sein. Zukünftig könnte ‚SUV’ also auch „Shopping Utility Vehicle“ bedeuten…

ard to believe but true: after selling more than 50 million albums with the Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham has openly admitted that she is not a particularly good singer, or actor. She still occasionally does the latter though when taking the mickey out of herself, usually in a very self-deprecating manner. Her whole career is fascinating: the Spice Girls were the first and are still today the most successful manufactured girl band in the world.

Victoria answered an advertisement and was accepted, perhaps because she was just the type of girl they were looking for. All the wealth she acquired in a short space of time with the Spice Girls, was however nothing new to her. She comes from an extremely wealthy family, was driven to school in a Rolls-Royce and was brought up in the lap of luxury.

This all makes her nickname ‘Posh’ very apt: it means ‘classy’ or ‘swish’ but it can also be used negatively in the sense of ‘putting on airs and graces’ or ‘arrogant’. She is said to have chosen herself to be described as ‘Posh’, as she also does not like the shortened form of her name – Vicky. If this is so, it is another example of her self irony. success with the Spice Girls, a somewhat less successful solo career after they split up (although one of her singles did get to number three in the British charts) and marriage to David Beckham, one of the best, and best-looking, professional footballers in Britain, the girl band had a brief comeback in 2007, which once again broke records: all 20,000 tickets for the London concert alone sold out in less than one minute flat!

At the same time, Victoria had started to do some modelling for Armani and Marc Jacobs, among others. And she was never out of the press, not least because of her extravagant lifestyle with ‘Becks’. The comments that accompanied the photos were mostly hostile and negative, partly because Victoria had not yet found her own style.

In 2007, she moved with her husband and three sons to the USA, where David was signed to play for Los Angeles Galaxy. Here, Victoria started out on her design career – first with Rock and Republic, but soon under her own name. Even the fact that in the same year she was described by the world-famous style critic, Richard Blackwell, as the worst dressed celebrity, failed to prevent her success. On the

contrary: in 2008 she created a real stir at New York Fashion Week with her first collection. Those who in advance had gleefully hoped for a resounding defeat for the Briton, who often comes across as cold and arrogant, had to grudgingly admit that she really understands her metier.

More and more Hollywood greats took to Victoria’s collection and paraded her linear, but at the same time elegant and figure-hugging dresses up the red carpet. Today, Victoria has the pleasure of knowing that as well as self-confident women from all over the world, stars with very different figures such as Demi Moore, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez all love her clothes. Almost as a sideline Victoria also designs accessories such as bags and sunglasses, and together with her husband has already brought out five fragrances of her own. This year she has finally made it to the big time: she has not only been hired by Land Rover as a designer for the new Evoque, specifically to target the female public, she has also been nominated for this year’s British Fashion Awards in the ‘Designer Brand of the Year’ category – the equivalent of an ‘Oscar’ for fashion designers. At New York Fashion Week in September she presented her third collection, for next summer, which was received with great enthusiasm.

aum zu glauben, aber wahr: Nach über 50 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern mit den Spice Girls gibt Victoria Beckham unumwunden zu, weder besonders gut singen noch schauspielern zu können. Letzteres tut sie gelegentlich noch, wobei sie sich dann in aller Regel selbstironisch auf die Schippe nimmt.

Ihr gesamter Werdegang ist faszinierend: Victoria hatte sich für das Casting beworben und war, vielleicht weil ihr Typ gerade passte, genommen worden. All der Reichtum, den sie mit den Spice Girls in kürzester Zeit anhäufte, war für sie jedoch nichts Neues. Sie stammt aus sehr wohlhabendem Elternhaus, wurde im Rolls-Royce zur Schule gefahren und war von Kindheit an mit Luxus vertraut.

Passend dazu ihr Spitzname „Posh“: Das bedeutet „nobel“ oder „piekfein“, was allerdings im Sinne von „übertrieben vornehm“ oder „versnobt“ durchaus abwertend benutzt werden kann. Angeblich soll sie sich ja selbst als „Posh“ bezeichnen – auch weil sie die Abkürzung „Vicky“ nie mochte – wenn dem so ist, wäre dies ein weiteres Indiz für ihre Selbstironie.

Nach dem unglaublichen Erfolg mit den Spice Girls, einer eher mässig erfolgreichen Solo-Karriere nach deren Auflösung (bei der es eine Single immerhin noch auf Platz 3 der britischen Charts schaffte) und der Heirat mit David Beckham, einem der besten – und bestaussehenden – Profi-Fussballer Grossbritanniens, gab es 2007 ein kurzes Comeback der Mädchenband, das abermals zu Rekorden führte: Allein für das Konzert in London waren in weniger als einer Minute sämtliche 20.000 Tickets verkauft.

Parallel hatte Victoria begonnen zu modeln, u.a. für Armani und Marc Jacobs. Auch sonst

war sie ständig in den Medien präsent, nicht zuletzt wegen ihres aufwändigen Lebensstils mit „Becks“.

2007 zog sie mit ihrem Mann und den drei Söhnen in die USA, wo David von Los Angeles Galaxy unter Vertrag genommen worden war.

Ein Spaziergang durch den Skulpturen-Park „Son Conte“ in der Nähe von Artá eröffnet anhand von über 20 Plastiken wesentlich aus Corten-Stahl und nicht rostendem Edelstahl den Blick auf die Philosophie von Gatz und die seiner Vorgänger, in deren Tradition er sich stellt.

Der 1943 geborene Physiker und Bildhauer war unter anderem als Leiter einer Entwicklungsabteilung für hochtechnologische Gerätetechnik in Hamburg tätig und wandte sich später der Architektur zu. Eines seiner Gebäude, entstanden im Sinne seiner Philosophie als Wohnskulptur, die eng mit Natur und Landschaft verbunden ist, bewohnt er heute noch selbst. Erst seit 2005 widmet sich Gatz der Bildhauerei allein. „Meine Plastiken sind auch ein Versuch, den Betrachter mit offenen Augen träumen zu lassen“, sagt Gatz. FACES & PLACES JÖRG DÖRING AT HELLA MARIA HÖFER ART GALLERY Jörg Döring made a name for himself throughout the world at the beginning of the 1990s with his oversized paintings of Mickey Mouse. Since 2000, besides painting, he has devoted himself to the technique of silk screen printing on canvas. The pop-art artist is inspired above all by photographs of Hollywood stars and comics. He works on every one of his works of art individually, both before and after printing, so that a number of variants result from a single subject, each of which nevertheless remains unique. Hella Maria Höfer has long been exhibiting his work in Mallorca with great success.

Jörg Döring wurde Anfang der 90er Jahre mit seinen überdimensionalen Mickey Mouse Gemälden weltbekannt. Seit 2000 beschäftigt er sich neben der Malerei mit der Technik der Serigrafie auf Leinwand. Es sind vor allem Fotografien von Hollywood-Stars und Comics, die den Pop-Art Künstler inspirieren. Jede seiner Arbeiten wird vor und nach dem Druck individuell bearbeitet, so dass von einem Motiv zahlreiche Varianten entstehen und jedes davon dennoch ein Unikat bleibt. CONDOR SPAIN CELEBRATES AT THE OKTOBERFEST For the past two years, the German airline Condor has been holding its company event at the Oktoberfest in Paguera. With good reason: Condor has been flying to the Spanish mainland, the Canary Islands and the Balearics for more than half a century. So in 2010, Condor once again invited its partners from the media and Spanish travel agencies to the Condor Lounge at the Oktoberfest. To the strains of Bavarian music, a good time was had by all. Area Manager for Spain, Miguel de Jorge, and Head of Sales and Marketing for Spain and Portugal, Carsten Sasse, judged the event to have been a success and announced that they will be doing it again in 2011.

Aus gu-tem Grund: Fliegt doch die Condor seit über einem halben Jahrhundert das spani-sche Festland, die Kanaren und die Balearen an. So hat die Condor auch 2010 wie-der Medienpartner und spa-nische Reisebüros zur Con- dor Lounge eingeladen, wo sich bei bayerischer Musik und bajuwarischen Spezialitäten zur Mass Bier alle prächtig unterhalten haben.

FACES & PLACES BAMBOLO’S WORLD AT ARTE CASA

Bambolo at ArteCasa gallery

In October, the artist and sculptor Bambolo (born Norbert Graubner) presented his eclectic works in the Galerie Arte Casa in Port Andratx. He finds the inspiration for his work in wood, his paintings, sculptures and collages in his travels to distant countries: “Everything that I paint I have seen with my own eyes.” He has been living and working in Mallorca for the past 27 years and exhibits his work in Barcelona and Frankfurt. He now has a permanent installation at Arte Casa in Port Andratx.

Der Künstler und Bildhauer Bambolo, dessen bürgerlicher Name Norbert Graubner ist, stellte seine vielseitigen Arbeiten im Oktober in der Galerie Arte Casa in Port Andratx vor. Die Inspiration für seine Holzarbeiten, Gemälde, Skulpturen und Callogen findet Bambolo auf seinen Reisen in ferne Länder: “Alles, was ich male, habe ich gesehen”. Seit 27 Jahren lebt und arbeitet er auf Mallorca, sein Werk zeigt er in Barcelona, Frankfurt und derzeit bei Arte Casa in Port Andratx in einer dauerhaften Installation.
