The Bluegrass Active Race Ergonomics protocol, together with the very high level of safety (certified to European standards covering motorbike protective clothing) offered by our range of protective clothing, and our use of innovative materials such as D3O ™ are just some of the secrets of our success.

The Bluegrass Active Race Ergonomics protocol was developed to design and engineer our protective gear. The BARE protocol is an indispensible interface between the protective clothing and the rider so that the task of the former (the protective gear must provide the rider with maximum protection) is completely compatible with the needs of the latter (nothing should prevent the rider from concentrating on his riding). The BARE protocol allows us to analyse the rider’s protective gear needs, design innovative products and then test them on the ground. The BARE protocol takes into consideration a wide range of parameters in order to optimize motor performance; from ergonomics and anatomy to accident research whist exploring the use of different types of material..

MOTORBIKE CERTIFICATION Unlike helmets, cyclists’ protective clothing does not come under any official certification system which would certify its level of efficiency. That is why we have decided to design Bluegrass protective gear so that it complies to strict European safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). These give precise guidelines (directive 89686) based on scientific studies on accident research and for reproducible tests which assess whether the product really offers full protection or if it is purely aesthetic. Elbow/Knee guards (EN 1621-1) These guards come under standard EN 16211, ‘Motorcyclists protective clothing against mechanical impact – part 1: Protectors against limb joint impact for motorcyclists’. Not only does it take into account the absorption of impact energy, it also covers the ergonomics of protective clothing for cyclists and guarantees that the materials in contact with the skin are harmless. Back protectors (EN 1621-2). These protectors come under standard EN 1621-2, ‘Motorcyclists protective clothing against mechanical impact – part 2: back protectors – requirements and test procedures’.

D3O™ TECHNOLOGY Material The D3O™ inserts which are fitted in Bluegrass protective gear are the result of highly innovative technology. They are made from an orange-coloured tactile polymer material which is composed of intelligent molecules. These are free flowing when at rest but lock (polymerize) on impact, dissipating kinetic energy. Advantages D3O™ technology allows us to make protectors which not only provide a maximum level of safety as they comply to motorcycle safety standards, but also offer a high level of comfort and total freedom of movement. This feature is greatly appreciated by cyclists. When pedalling for example, the D3O™ inserts in the Bobcat D3O™ knee guards are flexible and follow the body’s movement. It is only on impact that the insert hardens, providing full protection (complies to CE EN 1621-1 standards).

GRIZZLY The design of the Grizzly protective core was strongly inspired by an armadillo’s armour with its 18 bony plates. But with a slight difference, unlike him, there is no need to roll into a ball when you feel threatened. You just need to concentrate on your riding to overcome the obstacle.
