TUNNELLING FORMWORK SYSTEMS With urbanization and the need to travel and improved infrastructure Tunnelling Formwork has become one of the preferred choices for the at home and worldwide for the construction of Underground Metros, Hydro Electric Power Stations & Dams, Railway, Highway, Irrigation & Storage etc According to the design requirements Horse Shoe type, Gallery type and Circular type can be manufactured and according to the specifications and geometry these can work manually hydraulically, electronically or in combination .
Basic System Operation After finishing the tunnel drilling and excavation work, rebar is laid (using the blacksmith's car and membrane laying cart). Once the shoring is completed and shotcrete concreting has been carried out then generally the next step is to ensure a smooth level tunnel floor and work surface, for this an invert formwork is utilized to lay the concrete flooring. Finally the Tunnelling formwork is used to pour the walls and roof of the tunnel. After any necessary cleaning and repairs, follow up installations are duly carried out using other tunneling accessories and the tunnel is made ready for service.
TYPES OF TUNNEL FORMWORKS 1. CUT AND COVER TYPE This method is the simple term given to the process of initial excavation of the tunnel route is followed by the construction of the tunnel with the tunnel finally being covered. This method is the preferred method for the construction of metro tunnels, highway tunnels and infrastructure tunnels The formworks used in this type of tunneling are foundations and tunneling shell Initally the foundation is laid along the chosen route followed by the shell of the tunnel being laid on a moveable rail system. The external formwork according to may be designed to allow implementation without or without using cranes.

2. OTHER TUNNEL FORMWORK TYPES * Tunnel Form types according to function ; a - Energy and Water Tunnels Water is collected in order to obtain energy from hydroelectric dams and the way that thiswater is transfered to the site of electricproduction is through tunnels. The pressures involved are immensewhen water is released and for this reason Circular or Horseshoe shaped tunnels are preferred. b - Railway Tunnels These tunnels are constructed under rivers, existing water channels, and through mountainous areas Single track railways and can be built single-track railways 4.5m to 6m wide, and double track railways 8m and 9m wide are usually the norm c - Pedestrian Tunnels These are usually built under roads and railways to allow pedestrian traffic/access. Pedestrian tunnels usually have a minimum width of 3m with a minimum height of 2.5m. May be regular square, belt shaped in design d - Metro Tunnels Similar in size to railway tunnels metro tunnels are important to reduce traffic congestion in busy cities worldwide. e - Highway Tunnels To reduce travel times between cities and towns and to reduce investment in road building tunnels are often built through the roughest terrain to ensure the shortest distances are achieved.

3. INVERT FORMWORK The required formwork for pouring the flooring concrete of the tunnel.The invert formwork is utilized prior to the last concrete pour of the Cut and Cover or Tunnelling Formwork. May be designed to work manually or be hydaulically assisted. 4.STEEL WORKERS CART (BLACKSMITHS CART) Used to prepare the surface of the tunnels with a lining of steel reinforcement prior to the pouring of concrete. Is also used after the pouring of concrete for control, finishing and repar of the concrete surfaces. May be manually, electrically or hydraulically controlled system that can also be designed to be pulled or pushed by a vehicle. 5. MEMBRANE LAYING TROLLEY VEHICLE To minimize the level of water permeability of the tunnel a membrane is layed on the surface of the concrete utilizing this specialized vehicle.
6. BOX CULVERT These versatile tunneling formworks are used in many infrastructure situations. They are made from lightweight vertical support panels. One or more can be utilized at one time and may also be designed to be moveable or fixed system 7.
