ACCESS TO CULTURE IS ESSENTIAL FOR A COMMUNITY. HAVING A FRIENDLY SPACE TO BRING TOGETHER DIVERSE CULTURES WAS THE AIM OF THE CITY OF RAIMBEAUCOURT IN FRANCE. THEY APPROACHED WF EDUCATION, TO DESIGN, PLAN AND INSTALL THEIR NEW LIBRARY.
This multi-functional space is a brandnew building and includes a library, a digital museum, and a music school.
WF Education worked with the library team to create a place where it is possible to visit and borrow a book a er work, browse on a computer, or sit in a comfortable seat and enjoy a cup of co ee.
The head of the youth centre was facing a challenge as they had to plan and design this library space without any previous experience.
We were able to provide support and the experience of our space planners and design team.

Meet WF’s Head of Design
“My position is to oversee and drive the design of amazing spaces.
The essence of engaging design will always be about people - how they use a space and how it makes them feel.
It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, inspiring, and meaningful environment, not about passing fads or fashion.
It is rewarding to work closely with our clients to identify their vision and then translating that into full design solutions”.
Michaela’s Top Library Design Tips
Identify and agree activities within the space, list priorities and what is non-negotiable
Take account of containment and natural light
What types of books are to be displayed and how?
Arranging stock - making your book collection a special attraction
Reading spaces - make them cosy, secure and welcoming for all ages
Combine practicality and creativity
Aesthetics, mood and feel - think colour schemes and mixing materials and finishes
Think about access and ownership

FLEXIBILITY IS KEY...
The organisation of workshops, cultural events and multidisciplinary activities requires strong flexibility of the space. At WF Education, we strive to find solutions that allow you to accommodate a diverse audience and arrange your space
according to your needs. Our modular Everna™ range makes it possible to create flexible, reconfigurable and adaptable spaces, to evolve according to your requirements and those of your users. Creating distinct zones that are

WHY IS COLLABORATION IMPORTANT?
specific to an activity or group and can adapt to the changing needs of a modern library space.
Providing regular opportunities to collaborate allows students to explore their ideas to find solutions that are representative of their original vision in a constructive way. It is proven that group work leads to the development of more original solutions. This encourages students to process information and concepts more actively, rather than using their memory of facts and figures.
The benefits of group work include:
Improved information acquisition and retention (up to 50%!)
Self-discipline and leadership
The acquisition of new skills and knowledge.
Improvement of interpersonal skills and teamwork

Create presentation spaces and encourage participation Create a relaxing space
The art of presentation is an essential skill for today’s students. It is necessary to regularly o er them the opportunity to develop their skills in di erent contexts. According to CBI’s Education Development Survey (2010), more than two-thirds of employers (70%) would like teachers to make it a point to develop these skills in their young students.
Presentation skills are important for:
Communicating complex information in a simple way
Communicating thoughts and feelings e ectively
Developing self-confidence
Improving professional skills
Create spaces that support creativity
Creativity engages the mind and frees it in a way that allows students to better absorb knowledge. Creative participation in discussions nurtures a sense of sharing, teamwork and cooperation. Creativity also promotes mental growth in children by providing the opportunity to try new ideas, new ways of thinking and solving problems. Download
When space is limited, it is essential to find appropriate places for students to meet or congregate outside of classrooms. The objective of creating relaxation areas is to o er dedicated places that do not resemble the environment of a classic classroom. There are many ways to achieve this, but the focus should be on colour, textures, lighting and furnishings. By selecting these elements carefully, you will create a unique, flexible, creative, alternative educational environment. Relaxation zones could be created throughout campus, using spaces such as hallways, stairways, some library areas, lunchrooms, and outdoor spaces.
The advantages of a relaxation area: Encourages clear and creative thinking. Contributes to well-being. Promotes social interaction. Encourages a sense of community.

Presentation
According to the latest research conducted by the National Literacy Trust in the UK in 2021, around 54% of teenagers aged 13 to 18 reported using their local library within the past year. However, this number varies significantly depending on factors such as age, gender, and socio-economic background.
The research found that younger teenagers (aged 13-15) were more likely to use libraries than older teenagers (aged 16-18), with 58% of the former group reporting regular library use compared to 51% of the latter. Girls were also more likely to use libraries than boys, with 59% of girls reporting library use compared to 49% of boys.
Socio-economic factors were also found to be significant, with teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds (defined as those eligible for free school meals) being less likely to use libraries than those from more a uent backgrounds. Only 39% of disadvantaged teenagers reported using a library within the past year, compared to 62% of their more fortunate peers.
Overall, the research suggests that while a significant proportion of teenagers in the UK do use libraries, there are still significant barriers to library use for certain groups of young people. This highlights the importance of making libraries accessible and welcoming to all, and ensuring that they provide resources and services that meet the diverse needs of teenagers in the community.
Advantages of their own dedicated space:
• Encourages clear and creative thinking
• Contributes to feelings of well-being
• Promotes social interactions
• Encourages a sense of community
So why do most teenagers visit their library? They have a range of needs when it comes to the library. Here are some common reasons a teen may want to visit their library:
1. Books and other resources – Starting with the obvious! Teenagers may be looking for books, graphic novels, magazines, audiobooks, and other resources that reflect their interests and help them explore new topics.
2. Technology – Many teenagers may visit a library to use their computer services and Wi-Fi. For those less fortunate, who don’t have access at home, a library space is essential for allowing them to do any research or work they may need to do. They may just want to charge their phone!
3. A welcoming and safe environment – Teenagers will migrate to a space where they can study, hang out with friends, or simply relax, so a welcoming, comfortable and safe environment is essential.
4. Programmes and activities – Teenagers may be interested in attending workshops, clubs, or other events that allow them to explore their interests and meet other teens. For example, board game meetups, book clubs, and cra ing sessions.
5. Opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community – Many teenagers are passionate about social justice and community service, so volunteering opportunities and service projects can be appealing.
Teenagers want a library that is welcoming, accessible, and responsive to their needs and interests. By providing a range of resources, programmes, and services that cater to the needs of teenagers, libraries can help support and empower this important segment of the community. Everna™ was created with all of this in mind, so you can provide your teens with their own supportive library space!

Around 54% of UK teenagers aged 13 to 18 reported using their local library within the past year.
It is important your library o ers young people access to a variety of materials and an environment that encourages them to visit and engage with the library. You can do this by creating a designated teen zone! The best teen spaces create the right balance between a calm and quiet space, while also allowing for group work and socialising. To encourage reading, present books face-up where possible, and provide lots of comfortable seating so they can stay and read in a relaxing environment for as long as they want!

Our cosy seating and dens invite teenagers to settle down and immerse themselves in a book or simply to skim through the materials on o er to them.

Enduringly popular with teenagers...
Ah the ever popular bean bag! So simple yet so crucial for creating cosy nooks to curl up with a book. It remains a key element in creating spaces dedicated to teenagers. Their enveloping shape has always been popular with younger children, but they are coveted by older children. They use bean bags to settle down and read on the spot, with the seats informal nature encouraging them to
lounge and get comfortable. We know that if teenagers are comfortable, they will stay and read for longer. Bean bags are also a useful and economic way to add a splash of colour to your library space.

Selecting YOUR Cantilibra™ system
Encourage collaboration in your library...
The concept of collaborative spaces stems from the emergence of alternative places dedicated to sharing ideas and working together.
It is essential that both public and educational libraries o er spaces that delivers an environment that encourages communication and teamwork. Somewhere they can share ideas, mind map, as well as hold workshops, conferences and deliver presentations!
Why is teamwork important?
Providing regular opportunities for people to work together encourages the sharing and challenging of each other’s ideas, in a constructive way. Individuals can also motivate each other and inspire new thought processes. It is proven that group work leads to the development of more original solutions and better results.

Flexible Seating: Make room for it!
Encourage participation!
Research proves that sitting uncomfortably and for extended periods has adverse e ects on the body both physically and mentally; so, it shouldn’t be ignored within our learning environments.
Behaviour can also be a ected by the learning environment and for children, this is fundamental to their development and their ability to absorb and retain information.
Dynamic seats such as “Sitting Ball” or “free movement stools” facilitate the change of postures while improving concentration and encouraging participation.
A range of versatile seating areas and getting children physically moving around can help with breaking up those long periods of sitting still. To make the time that is spent sitting down comfortable
and ergonomically correct, the use of adjustable and flexible furniture will enable you to adjust the height of the seat and minimise e ects. If this is not possible, ergonomically designed chairs will provide crucial postural support.
The use of portable seating is an excellent way to create comfortable, dedicated areas where pairs or groups of children can work collaboratively.
As libraries are o en a centralised and multi-functional learning environment, selecting seating and furniture that is easily portable provides a simple way to quickly change the layout of your space, encourage autonomy and create breakout zones for group work, peer-to-peer discussions, and teacher-led or individual learning. This is particularly important for younger children and primary schools.

Sitting in a classroom, without moving, a ects a child’s concentration and therefore can, in turn, slow their learning. The movement generated by a dynamic seat encourages the use of certain areas of the brain, which generates a notable improvement in concentration, understanding and collaboration.
Physiological studies have shown that the movement created by this type of sitting is comparable to walking. This allows the child in di erent situations, such as individual reading or group work, to combine the best possible conditions for success, but also to ‘enhance comfort.

IGNITING CURIOSITY, SUPPORTING LITERACY SKILLS, CREATING A READING CULTURE…
In order to inspire children to read, it is important to create a dedicated space for them, with suitable furniture where the books displayed forward are books suitable for their age. It is essential to give them access to a variety of books, which helps to ignite their interest, make them independent and introduce them to the world of reading.
Reading for fun is the best way for a child to learn to love reading. The choice of reading material contributes to making children readers for life. Children who choose what they read are more interested and retain information better. We created dedicated age-appropriate reading modules designed to encourage this young audience to read and develop a taste for reading.
OUR SPACES ARE BASED ON 3 PRINCIPLES:
INVITE SPONTANEOUS READING
It is much more stimulating for younger children to browse the colourful front cover of a book rather than its spine, particularly if they can’t yet read. A child will be more likely to explore a book if they like the cover.
ENCOURAGE THEM TO READ INSTANTLY
By o ering comfortable and playful seating in the immediate vicinity, children will be tempted to sit, relax, and immerse themselves in a book. Our cosy alcoves encourage children to consult on the spot, attracting them instantly.
CATCH THEIR EYE AND STIMULATE THEIR INTEREST
Make reading and storytime fun by creating cosy dedicated spaces where children feel comfortable and welcomed. Our modules create immersive spaces with bright colours and age-appropriate graphics that let them know they’re in the right place.

Presentation and exhibition
Sometimes it can be the surprise part of a librarian’s role – creating engaging and inspirational displays, presentations, and exhibitions to pique the interest of your library visitors!
But they are an excellent tool to reach out to library users and to encourage the wider community to visit your space. Preparing them can be time-consuming and having the right tools and equipment is essential for making life easier!
Why are displays and exhibitions important to libraries?
Teaching tool
A display is a is a wonderful opportunity for the library to organise materials around a theme and present that to its audiences as a self-learning experience. People can interact with the display in their own time.
Attract new audiences
Something new in the library can create a buzz. Although a libraries core business generates the greatest volume of service and use, o en it is the special exhibit that creates excitement. The exhibit may get coverage in a local newspaper or produce content for your website and social feeds.
Professional development opportunity
Exhibitions call for a librarian’s best thinking, research, creative, writing, planning, organising, and time management skills.
Use of unique collections
Some collections, particularly materials in Special Collections and Archives, will seldom be seen by your patrons or used unless they are physically presented in your library space.
Develop partnerships
Creating an exhibition or display on behalf of authors, local groups and organisations, artists or historians provides opportunities to develop relationships within the community and encourage diverse groups to visit a space they may not ordinarily visit.

Meet the Book Doctor - First aid for books
Thousands of books represent a significant financial investment.
Protecting books and prolonging their shelf life is essential. Gresswell has been providing book care products for over 80 years. O ering the widest range of specialised products, you can be assured we have the right one for your book care needs.
Prevention is better than cure! Whether paperback or hardback, books are prone to wear and tear. Nobody wants to remove a book from the shelves, retire a title from the library or order unnecessary replacement stock.
However, if a cure is necessary, being able to react quickly to repair damaged books is crucial to maintaining circulation e ciency and prolonging the shelf life of all library materials.
Covers can get ripped and spines can get damaged from regular use. Bookbinding repairs can make books stronger than new and are worth investing in. Gresswell’s Book Repair Centre kit and associated recommended products are ideal for spine repair, reinforcing inside hinges, spines, periodical pages, and even laminating paperback books.
Pages can come loose, either individually or in some cases the whole signature can become detached from the cover. We have a wide range of book and binder tapes and films, suitable for any requirement or budget.
Gresswell Book Doctor FOR DAY-TO-DAY BOOK REPAIR AND CONSERVATION, BOOK DOCTOR HAS THE REMEDY. This pack was put together following consultation with professional librarians to find out just what was needed on a day-to-day basis to keep books in good repair. Presented in a handy, medium size Gratnell Storage Tray with lid.
Code: 4001300 £155.00 Price per pack.
The Gresswell Book Doctors’ Top 5 ‘CPR’ considerations… Implementing our CPR (Circulation, Protection, Repair) approach aims to save time and money!
1. When reattaching a cover, using double-stitched binder tape will result in a repair that is much more durable than the original hinges.
2. To quickly clean page edges – use fine grade sandpaper to quickly restore pages as good as new.
3. We o er a wide variety of cost-e ective laminates for so cover, hardbacks, and hardback jackets designed to meet di erent needs.

A journey of shelf discovery...
With more people reading for pleasure, patrons are engaging di erently with the library from the minute they walk through the door. You can clear shelf space and update the ways your collection flows to make it easier for readers to peruse their options.
They’re not only judging books by their covers, but also determining what they want to do at your library and how long they want to stay based on what they see and feel. Are your bookshelves and displays compelling enough to keep up?
Clever use of your library’s shelf space and displays is your most productive and e cient “salesperson”. To capture your visitors’ attention quickly and consistently, you want mobile book displays or shelves that are easy to reconfigure!
Humans are visual creatures, processing imagery 60,000 times faster than text. It stands to reason that your library’s visitors are making a lot of their decisions based on aesthetics and appearance.
