Educational benefits of 3D printing
A range of factors have led to an explosion in demand for 3D printing in education, including advances in equipment and software design, widening demands for its use, and decreasing machinery prices.
Students who look to progress in careers based on STEAMrelated subjects, for instance, engineering, will gain advantages from hands-on experience of a range of digital technologies being combined with theoretical lessons.
Introducing a ‘plug and play’ mobile workstation set-up allows teachers to introduce essential 3D printing resources and activities without the need to be accommodated in a dedicated workshop space.
What are the benefits of 3D Printing for students?
Creative thinking and experimentation
Engagement in design creation inspires students to use their imagination, a 3D printer demonstrates how unconventional thinking works. Bringing their designs to life, whilst understanding the importance of product concept and evaluation, will challenge and strengthen their creativity. It is a perfect tool for igniting innovative thinking in your classroom.
Developing the skills of tomorrow
Engagement in design creation inspires students to use their imagination, a 3D printer demonstrates how unconventional thinking works. Bringing their designs to life, whilst understanding the importance of product concept and evaluation, will challenge and strengthen their creativity. It is a perfect tool for igniting innovative thinking in your classroom.
Critical thinking, analysis and problem solving
Identifying needs, problemsolving and creating ‘open-ended’ solutions are all core elements of the D&T curriculum. Threedimensional printing provides an opportunity for students to learn and develop their ability to deepen an understanding of complex concepts of creative design. Identifying challenges along the way, they can develop their own way of thinking outside the box to recognise areas for improvement.
Invest in flexibility: with an integrated Akira™ 3D printing mobile workstation, educators can easily rearrange the space as needed to accommodate different activities or group sizes.

Aids cross-curricular learning
The technology can be used across multiple subject areas and is excellent for extra-curricular and cross-curricular activities such as STEAM clubs. It is perfect for creating opportunities to apply knowledge from other subjects such as Art, Business Studies, Mathematics, History and Geography. Science subjects could certainly benefit from a wide variety of projects, from the planets to fossils, and molecular modelling. This approach may also help with shared funding to purchase additional 3D printers or workstations.
The widespread adoption of 3D printing in education represents a transformative shift in how students engage with technology and learning.
The accessibility of mobile 3D printing workstations enables seamless integration into classrooms, promoting hands-on experiences across the learning landscape. Embracing 3D printing empowers students to bring their ideas to life and nurtures a mindset of innovation and adaptability, essential in the digital age now and ahead of us. What is not to like!

Introducing the Schred recycling system
Help to deliver on long term sustainability goals and invest in equipment to support recycling!
The CR Clarke plastic recycling system allows you to recycle used plastic into re-usable sheets of material suitable for thermoforming. Materials that can be recycled include PP, HIPS, ABS and LDPE (milk bottles).
The system consists of a granulator which continually shreds the fed material into very small pellets and a sheet press which uses heat and pressure to turn the pellets into a plastic sheet. Check out the full range for more detail online...
C R Clarke Schred R25 Plastic Granulator Single Phase
Code: 490-046
The R25 is an industrial-quality plastic granulator. Suitable materials for recycling include PP, HIPS, ABS, and LDPE.
Materials to be granulated are loaded into the hopper at the top of the machine. A combination of static and rotating blades gradually chops the material into smaller and smaller pieces. Once the material reaches a small enough size it passes out through a mesh filter
C R Clarke Schred R30 Plastic Sheet Making Press
Code: 490-048
Use the C R Clarke Plastic Sheet Making Press in conjunction with the Schred system to turn your old plastic waste into usable vacuum thermoforming.
The R30 Sheet Press converts granulated thermoplastic material into a usable form using heat and pressure. As standard, the formed article is a flat plastic sheet, which can typically be used thermoforming forming, laser cutting, line bending etc.

Recycling in education - There is no planet B! Real-world problems need practical minds…
Encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own future is desirable and is a crucial feature of their education. The more we do within our communities, the more we can achieve.
Recycling is a vital and tangible aspect of environmental preservation. It reduces the need for extracting raw materials, cutting down on pollution and energy consumption. Plastic waste poses significant threats to marine life and ecosystems, highlighting the urgency for action.
• Government initiatives aim to reduce plastic waste and encourage recycling, with commitments to eliminate single-use plastics.
Young people are leading the charge in mitigating single-use plastic effects, showing high ownership of reusable items.
Schools can contribute to greener practices through recycling schemes incorporated in Design and Technology education.
The D&T curriculum emphasises the importance of considering the ecological and social impact of materials, promoting the 6 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, Refuse, and Repair.
The Government has a target of eliminating avoidable plastic waste by end of 2042.
In 2022/23, the household recycling rate decreased to 43.3%, down by 0.8 percentage points from the previous year.
An estimated 73% of the plastic bottles produced in 2020/21 were collected for recycling.

64 | Rethinking design education spaces
Our aim…
To create spaces which support design education for the 21st Century that will equip designers with the skills and perspectives to design more inclusive, sustainable, equitable, and responsible future products, systems, organisations, and societies.
Our furniture and spatial designs support a new future of design education.
• Learning to utilise the materials and processes around us purposefully.
• Focusing designing and making on real people with real problems.
• The prototyping of both digital and physical solutions.
Schools no longer want environments designed with just one outcome in mind; a sustainable outlook means that learning spaces can evolve over time to help increase their longevity.
This kind of longer-term planning dramatically reduces the likelihood of redoing entire fit outs, saving on budgets and helping to deliver on the long-term sustainability goals of the school.
Whether your project is to rethink, refurbish or build an entirely new learning space, it is essential that you explore – from the very start – how you might incorporate the potential to adapt to changing circumstances or demand.
To best support the future of Design and Technology teaching with products, resources, and solutions we need to travel forwards in time and plan for what that framework, curriculum and associated spaces might look like…
Without mobile furniture could you rethink or relocate your space?
“The environment has a massive effect on learning outcomes. Allowing students to have the right space to thrive and when you get it right, makes a huge difference.
Our students we teach in our trust are very fortunate to have purposeful D&T environments that allow them to really excel and succeed in the subject at both key stages 3 and 4.
Systems and control and robotics are an integral part of D&T now and its vital that we are providing the right facilities and environments and not hindering their progress in the subject.”
Drew Wicken Director of Design & Technology and Vocational Education
for The Co-op Academy Trust.
“Without abandoning our knowledge, expertise and love of materials, we need to accept that, for the time being, we have the opportunity to embrace what unites us; developing new pedagogies, which foster design thinking and digital D&T.
The new GCSE reintroduced the idea of contexts to designing and making. Rather than spending time on dry knowledge organisers or information-laden worksheets, I would encourage D&T teachers to embrace ‘mainly designing’ activities (cf. McLain, 2021), both for individual and team-based classroom (including online) activities.”
Matt McLain Senior Lecturer in Teacher Education Liverpool
John Moores University
“We need to be moving in a direction where we are supporting and inclusive of a breadth of curriculum which includes a variety of textiles, woodworking, food technology, but also STEM is where we’re heading now!
Our spaces and our teaching need to be flexible enough to teach cross curricular, so we are teaching projects where math’s and science are brought in. This should be coming directly from the math’s and science teachers too, not just the Design & Technology teachers - bringing together STEM as a whole and delivering single, large projects with all subjects involved.”
Sima Bhudia Head of Design & Technology St. Margaret’s School
“Design & Technology is the ‘nimblest’ subject offered in schools around the world.
This is evident in looking back at how many iterations have occurred in the discipline in the past 20 years. No other subject studied in schools around the world has had to ‘adapt’ more often.
This flexibility gives way to an excitement that only D&T teachers can understand! Even with all of the changes that have been required over the years, some things remain the same.”
“The impact of learning environments on student outcomes is massive. Particularly in an area like Stoke-on-Trent, which has a strong industrial manufacturing history, and we need to contribute to the resurgence. That starts by giving children the best possible environment in which to learn.
We are very proud of the facilities we have now, because our students have the very best space to develop their knowledge and skills in Design and Technology.”
Jason Reagin IN Career-related Programme Coordinator Chadwick International School, South Korea
Shane Richardson Head Teacher Co-op Academy, Stoke-on-Trent.
“I challenge you to revisit your DT projects. I challenge you to focus on ways our students cannot just design but innovate. I challenge you to take a closer look at the SDGs and allow students to solve global issues.
Working in collaboration, teachers and students can explore new roads and inspire a new way of thinking for Design and Technology.
After all, isn’t that what we are here for-to inspire the next generation of thinkers and creators to solve problems and innovate, to help make the world a better place?”
Evo Hannan Founder Innovation X (Former Head of Design & Technology)
