Library design tips to promote discovery and boost safety Get a different perspective

Generate ideas Look at what other libraries are doing to boost flexibility and safety in their spaces. And take a tour of designs created by learning space experts, such as the 360° virtual tours at demco.com (search virtual tours).

Ask patrons and staff for feedback about what doesn’t work in your space — traffic flow problems, distractions, or other issues. This step helps develop the ideas you’ll use to guide your design.

Optimize what you have Remove visual distractions and rearrange furniture to create space that supports other activities, learning styles, and social distancing. Check your building for other helpful pieces that will boost your design.

Be selective about what you add Look for flexible furnishings that help you reach patrons in a variety of ways. Consider adding easy-to-clean items, writable surfaces, mobile furniture, floor seating, and work surfaces at different heights.
