CHALLENGE The world around us is changing, and also the way we need transportation is changing. Right now, big cities have problems with pollution and traffic, streets and parking lots taking up a lot of space in the city. The way people are using their car has also changed. On average, there are only 1,5 passengers per car, mostly used for durations under one hour. Electric cars are aiming to change this situation and change the way of transportation for the future. Sahkoauto wants to be a part of this movement. They are searching for concepts of a small electric Citycar that is able to compete on the market of northern Europe with its special conditions of cold and wet weather. Being affordable on the same time, Sahkoauto wants to create a car that is able to fill the gap of a small electric winterproof car that is left empty so far. Following the trends of present mobility, this car should also be able to be part of a car sharing network.

SOLUTION To join the inspiring green movement we created the Delfiini Electric Citycar! Using innovative tandem seating with a width under 120cm this car for 2 passengers will be more agile than your standard electric car and take less space when parked. Although simple in design it will be a comfortable vehicle even in the winter. A lightweight tube frame concept for the chassis will offer safety without adding to much weight. With this strategy we are able to spare costly technology like assisted steering and a smaller than usual electric motor is powerful enough for the Delfiini to reach necessary speeds. Delfiini is suited for the everyday life of everyone. A range up to 200 km and the ability to charge it at every socket makes you more flexible for your daily challenges. A panoramic roof and the ability to individualize party of the body of your Delfiini are creating a unique driving experience. All these features are qualifying Delfiini as a car sharing car as well. Innovative technology like app-integration and an intelligent ambient light system make it possible for you to comfortably get mobility when you need it. Other applications for example in public services and express delivery company are possible as well. Having created the first concepts and the base structure of this amazing car our next goal is to create a prototype to further test and optimize the Delfiini Electric Citycar.

CHALLENGE Let’s create the biggest, most effective and boundaries-breaking change to improve the way the modern municipality offers services. One of the main challenges was to find out what was really necessary in terms of in which services we should focus more. The other big challenge was to consider all people from Ylöjärvi and the officials. Every citizen and other influencer like the authorities of the municipality should benefit from the application. Additional to that was to figure out how to make the application interesting for the long term.
TEAM Christina Siffermann, Dortmund UAS, International business Markus Turunen, UTA, Administrative sciences Yaniv Steinberg, UTA, Human-technology interaction Justyna Garczarek, Jagiellonian University, Information management Panu Ojanen, UTA, Administrative sciences Jesus Muñoz, TUT, Industrial engineering
SOLUTION We started with a survey to find out what were the main issues and what the citizens of Ylöjärvi thought about the current situation. We also brainstormed a lot and we tried to understand the citizens’ needs. The team did research on the field of mobile application and municipality and we tried to find out how other countries tried to combine the technologically and bureaucratically topics. We combined the finnish way of dealing with such paperwork and the new technological trends on the market considered the survey and the target group. The final demo was an interactive video that showed how the application would work on a mobile phone. Additionally it displays different services and their functionality regarding the online processing of documents, reporting, voting and so on…. The interactive video is easy to understand and it illustrates the benefits and the user friendliness of the application’s interface.

CHALLENGE IDOM approaches the planning of new cities from an integrated perspective, incorporating all the variables required to create a functional urban reality in harmony with the territory. IDOM designed city models which are lively and inclusive, generating a healthy, environmentally stable social dynamic, with the correct provision of amenities and services, and creation of employment. The development of these models are economically and financially viable. Currently, They have an international project in South America that is based on identifying indicators. They study what the needs of the cities are and what they are doing. The goal is to be able to generate a dashboard: GIS (visualizer) applied to a city in relation to the plane of mobility, environment, and social aspects. They think that the combination among technology, algorithms, types of information and correlation leads to knowledge what IDOM is be able to do in other cities of the world. In the case of Bilbao: What is being done in the world right now? Where does Bilbao rank? Would it be beneficial for Bilbao? Is it a topic of interest?.
TEAM Dorleta Velázquez González, Law and business Fco Javier Zubiria Pérez, Social Psychologist. Aitor Marcos Díaz, Business Management Josu Alonso Unzurrunzaga, Mechanical industrial engineering
SOLUTION We understood that a global case study and a local analysis on Bilbao's positioning in urban solutions could lay the foundations on which we proposed the creation of a scorecard that seeks to measure the 6 main axes that characterize a Smart City. This scorecard aims to be a prototype of the type of tool that Bilbao should use to detect gaps and vulnerabilities, and thus be able to offer innovative urban solutions based on criteria designated by the own scorecard. The solution was a master plan. It has been the first outline that seeks to respond to the paradigm shift that the transition to the knowledge society supposes. As an example of its applicability, we related the budget items to each axis of the Smart City and we also proposed ideas of urban solutions based on the interpretation suggested previously by the scorecard and the global case study. Looking ahead, the potential of Big Data and unstructured information to better serve the needs of the city of Bilbao was underscored.

CHALLENGE Our challenge was to develop a firm concept about a media application that would empower vulnerable youngsters age-range 14–16 by self-expression, while creating new possibilities to publish creative media works, build motivation to participate in society and develop media literacy PLUS help youngsters to look at the bright side of life.
TEAM Camilla SjĂśman, UTA, LLL & Positive Education Manon Laby, UTA, Politics Stephanie Arevalo, TUT, UX design Victoria Grunberg, TAMK, Media & Arts
SOLUTION We created a demo-version of a playful mobile application called MURKKUWOOD (referring not only to ants but as teenagers as well). The concept was developed around of a wood filled with small insects that were considered maybe insignificant at first but with closer inspection turned out to be just the opposite, with the ability to actually achieve a lot while empowered, despite of their first appearance. Murkkuwood was based on the research project of the University of Tampere and the Research Center for Journalism, Media and Communication "Young People in the Limelight" and the project was produced in collaboration with the Finnish Newspapers Association and the Finnish Periodical Publishers´ Association. The mobile application combined the insights of media pedagogy and experimental learning with a hint of positive psychology to one uniform concept that included four parts: creative writing, photography, video production and participation. Each of the sections have multiple tasks that challenge the young to develop their skills in these specific areas accompanied with encouragement and positive feedback as the application serves as a friendly mentor, eventually leading to various possibilities to publish the creations in social media.

CHALLENGE In the Pirkanmaa region households are struggling with biowaste sorting, especially the smaller households. People find the process messy, time consuming and smelly and they can't find space for the current form of sorting. According to our project partners’ research almost 40% of the mixed waste produced by households in Pirkanmaa is biowaste. This is a big problem because in the Pirkanmaa region the mixed waste is disposed nowadays by burning it in Tammervoima incineration plant. Having biowaste in the mixed waste makes the burning process less efficient and actually the sorted biowaste has value on its own. So there is clearly a need to make the biowaste sorting process simpler, easier and tidier. Our team’s challenge was to take the bull by the horns and find out solutions to this problem.
TEAM Mikko Immonen, TUT, Environmental Technology Ane Niels Walinga, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Business Simone Gumpinger, FH IMC Krems, Business Aili Kultala, Bemidji State University, Environmental ecology Kaisa Ojaniittu, TUT, Environmental technology Matilda Susila, UTA, Environmental legislation Henriikka Pilpola, TUT, Business
SOLUTION After a few iterations of figuring out what our solution could be we found out that simply by placing the bio bin on the counter top might actually help with the lack of space. Now there could also be space to recycle other wastes since this solution might free space from under the kitchen counter. But now there's a problem of having an ugly biobin on the counter top. We decided to design the bin to look appealing and so now it also works as a design element. After a few days the biowaste in the bin begins to smell. This problem was simply solved by making the bin air tight. Smaller households don't usually create that much biowaste so a big biobin wouldn't be practical since the biobags usually tend to break and leak after a few weeks. So we made the bin compact, but still big enough for the needs of the smaller households. As a result we came up with Oskar - a tabletop biowaste bin. Oskar has all the needed elements to make biowaste recycling easy again. It is scalable to two different sizes, it has an inner bin which makes it easy to clean and to use with or without a biobag, all of its parts are washing machine compatible and the lid opens easily just by clicking it down. The bin itself is made from plastic to keep the costs down and the bottom is made from a anti-slip material which stops the bin from sliding around on the counter top.

CHALLENGE Amcor is the world’s largest supplier of flexible packaging, with manufacturing sites around the world. In the last years, Amcor is focusing on improving and are investing in a process of complete change throughout the company: investments, processes and flows. They have been working dividing the company into 3 sections : 1. Production Printing (Core). 2. Production Accessories 3. Storage Section (inflows and outflows). The STORAGE section is functioning independently from the rest of the company. How can we improve the operation of the storage and integrate it with the other 2 sections? How do we identify operations that add value and are connecting with the rest of the company and which are not? Is it possible to establish a roadmap and a training plan that allows for flexible incorporation and improving the efficiency of this section?
TEAM Aitor Garmendia Olasagasti, Business and management Administration Adrián Crespo Ramos, Business management Vanesa Martín Hernández, UPV, Business management
SOLUTION We needed to know the real work life of Amcor and the relationships among the different areas involved. Helped by the members of the company, we decided to do a “fieldwork” inside the warehouse: observation, analysis, collection of data and times, photographies and contact with the workers of the warehouse. It was very successful work done In close contact with all the areas. We built a demo with different solution proposals that included more than 21 improvement and change measures, the development of an interactive app to install on tablets and a complete manual for the perfect integration of new employees.

CHALLENGE Aialur wanted to offer to the client the possibility to dispose the personalized information geo-referenced and alphanumeric that can be access from mobile devices or tablets and allows make searches (addresses, cadastral parcels, other references…). The aim of the challenge was to allow Aialur´s clients the access to wide georeferenced information generated by them in a simple way and they can use it without any special knowledge and skills. This information should have dynamic links that allows support information (orthophotos, mapping) to automatically update and also enable us to update the specific information remotely, without direct access to portable or mobile equipment in which it is installed. The final result must improve the comprehension and the use of the final data generated, associated with portable navigation devices (phones or tablets) which generates a clear differentiation from other competitors
TEAM Jonathan Zalama López, Civil Engineering Jagoba Cariñanos García-Parra, Geomatics engineering and Topography Josune Fernández Urrutia, Architect Adrián Mediavilla Martín, Geomatics and topography
SOLUTION We had to start analyzing GIS projects (Geographic Information Systems programs), in order to find the most suitable for our needs, at the same time, we were needed to access and work with a database management system (DBMS) an integrated set of computer software that allowed users to interact with one or more databases and provided access to all of the data contained in the database. When we were able to get all of it, we analyzed and developmented the solutions according with the structure of the company. Final demo is an App based on GeoServer ( a Java-based software server that allows users to view and edit geospatial data). Using open standards set forth by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), GeoServer allowed us great flexibility in map creation and data sharing, easy accessibility, comfort and Innovation for the company.

CHALLENGE In Hämeenkyrö, there are two centers in one town. One of them is lively, busy and fully booked with businesses while the other one is waiting for the last visitor to shut it all down. Distance between these two is less than 3 kilometers but in people’s perception, it is much more. Nowadays Kyröskoski is facing the problem of businesses moving away which leads to less active surroundings. Young entrepreneurs are afraid to start their business here, the old ones are aging and most of the customers rather directly visit Tampere than accept the limited local range. The social and community life moved somewhere else and instead of people walking the streets you see just empty shops and shady building in the Kyröskoski city center. The solution should support the citizen’s participation opportunities by utilizing already existing tools instead of municipality financial sources, which are going to decrease.
TEAM Anna Suslova, TUT, Civil engineer Gabi Lee, TAMK, Urban Planning and Design Karolína Kopecká, TUT, Architecture and urban planning Lara González Porras, UTA, Business, Michael Szczerepa, TUT, Architecture and urban planning Mikko Salmela, UTA, Public administration and management
SOLUTION The main goal of this project was to explore new possibilities of participation. Ourteam organized a survey among the inhabitants of Kyröskoski. By using the collected data, our team found three main themes that people seemed especially concerned and passionate about improving. These themes were: decreasing business, lack of social events, and desolate atmosphere of the town. Our team organized a workshop where all themes were placed under further investigation. We created several participatory strategies, concepts and project instructions that may help people of Kyröskoski make their village a better place to live. All of them were summarized into the “Guide book”, where citizens can find a detailed manual for each project (involved people, possible foundings, to-do list for managers, international examples). The team met with Ilkka Jyväsjärvi, principal of the School of Kyröskoski to discuss how one of the initiatives could be turn into reality as a school project, so the book has been already in use. During the whole project, over one hundred citizens gave their contribution, and over three hundred opinions were given. The results indicate that people of Kyröskoski do value their village, and they are very keen to express their opinions, visions, and ideas. In this sense, Kyröskoski does have potential.

CHALLENGE The challenge of Red Cross in Vizcaya was to get a boat to save lives at sea that allows facing the different phases of the rescue, as well as the different conditions of the sea. The creation of an hybrid propulsion and the adaptation of the characteristics of a ship to its needs are two of the distinctive ones that make this project unique. Through an unprecedented boat, the project aims to create a multipurpose boat capable of responding adequately to any extreme situation, safeguarding the integrity of all who take part in it.
TEAM Gorka Aurre Montes, Industrial technologies engineer, Mechanicals Paul Aurre Gerediaga, Sports sciences
SOLUTION We gave to RED CROSS a prototype which involved the benefits of any boat in a single boat. The only way to solve the need they had, was by combining the two main types of propulsion (known worldwide) that a rescue boat could have, in a single turbines (commonly known Like "Jet") and propellers. It is about getting advantage of both types of propulsion and overriding the disadvantages that each entails. Each propulsion has its advantages and disadvantages, being able, in this way the pattern, to choose the type of propulsion that fits better according to the circumstances. Our final Demo was a Mock up of the boat made of wood. This mock up was modular and gives the opportunity to remove all the pieces completely.
