Retired Demon Jerseys 80 JACKIE SMITH

Jackie Smith was a standout football and track athlete at NSU from 1959-62. He led NSU in receiving in two of his three seasons but made his true mark in an incredible 16-season pro football career. Smith caught 480 passes for 7,918 yards and 43 touchdowns as a tight end with the Cardinals and Cowboys. On July 30, 1994 Smith was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

34 GARY REASONS

Gary Reasons played linebacker at NSU from 1980-83 and finished his career as the all-time leader in tackles with 394. He also set marks in single-season tackles with 172 in his as a senior and established a single-game mark with 24 stops against McNeese that same year. In nine NFL seasons, he won two Super Bowls. He was the first threetime All-American in Division I-AA history and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame on August 17, 1996.

44 JOE DELANEY

Joe Delaney was an All-American in football and track from 1977-81. He set NSU’s career rushing record with 3,047 yards and still holds the school single game record with 299 vs. Nicholls as a sophomore. He ran on NSU’s NCAA Champion 1981 4x100 m relay. As a rookie with the Chiefs, he set four club rushing records and was the 1982 AFC Rookie of the Year. He drowned in a heroic rescue attempt in June 1983. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

41 AL DODD

Al Dodd was a two-time All-America safety from 1965-66 and led the 1966 Demons to an unbeaten 9-0 season and a No. 1 national ranking. He holds the state and Northwestern record with 31 career interceptions. He led the team in kickoff returns from 1964-66 and was also the top punt returner for those seasons. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears and later played eight seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints as a receiver.

12 BOBBY HEBERT

Bobby Hebert, QB at NSU from 1979-82, still holds the NSU single-game passing and total offense records. He ran for 101 yards and threw for 364, hitting on 18-of-30 attempts in a 38-31 victory over UTA on Sept. 13, 1980. Hebert played 14 pro seasons - 11 in the NFL with the Saints and Falcons. As a rookie, he led Michigan to the USFL title and was MVP in the championship game. In the NFL, he completed 60% for 21,683 yards and 135 TDs.

76 MARCUS SPEARS

“Big Spears” and Jerry Rice are the only players from FCS programs ever chosen for the Football Writers of America All-America team (1993). One of 10 1993 Outland Trophy semifinalists, a two-year (1992-93) All-American and three-time All-Southland Conference tackle, he was a second-round 1994 NFL Draft choice (39th overall) who played 12 pro seasons.
