Forensics is a speech and interpretive competition There are multiple leagues, with sometimes different rules, however generally speaking, there is are a certain set of categories of competition, a scoring of the performance / delivery, and a ranking, with the best competitors in each categories moving on to the next round. The VHSL Rules are the ones we will be using, as we are competing in the REGIONALS in February, 2018 Rules for individual categories can be found in the Forensics Manual (2017-2018): file:///C:/Users/ecdemott/Downloads/2017-18-forensics-manual%20(2).pdf The rules for the Registration of teams for VHSL competition state that each team can submit 17 entries, with no more than 2 per category. Since there are 10 categories, that means that with a full team, some categories would only have one entry, and potentially some categories may have no entries. Some major changes took place in the alignment of teams and the creation of competitions. First and foremost, Conference is now disbanded, and there are now three levels. The first is Regionals in which Tallwood will compete with Class 6A teams* The top three competitors in each category will move on to the next level. A fourth alternate will be allowed to be on the advancement list, and compete if any of the three cannot compete, and a fifth alternate will be allowed if both the three competitor and the fourth alternate cannot compete. The SUPER REGIONAL (a new competition level between REGIONALS and STATE) will have Class 6 Region A winners competing with Class 6 Region B winners. The top three competitors (and a fourth alternate in case one of the top three cannot compete) will move on to State. At the same time, Class 6 Regions C and D are competing in another SUPER REGIONAL. Region A has 12 schools, Region B 8 schools, C 18 schools, D 17 schools

STATE competition will have Class 6 Region A, B, C, and D competing against each other. There are a total of 6 classes and Class 6 teams will only play class 6 teams. Class 5 plays only Class 5 teams, etc. Virginia Beach schools are represented in both Class 5 and 6. Tallwood will compete with Bayside, Cox, First Colonial, Kellam, Landstown, Ocean Lakes, plus some Chesapeake schools. Tallwood will not officially compete against Class 5 schools, including: Green Run, Kempsville, Princess Anne, or Salem, plus other Class 5 teams. My take away from the rules clinic is a direct quote from the speaker. Due to the realignment: “REGIONALS are going to be big and going to be competitive” So…. My set up this year will include practices that will be a mix of individual sign up and large group. I ask that each member commit to attending the meetings. All information will be posted on my door at B143B.
