A Fashionable Culture
EDITORS LETTER Dear Loyal Readers As I sat down with my girls to plan our annual city getaway, news came of the recent vicious crime that was committed in London. An acquittance who overheard of our plans encouraged us to put our plans on hold whilst we waited for “the world to be right again.” When will that be, I thought to myself? Every day we are waking up to unpleasant events all over the world, some here at home and some far ashore. The many calamitous events we are witnessing, are affecting millions and as troubled as we maybe, we are still able to get a good night’s sleep in the hope that we will wake up to a reassuring update on the news. These many disastrous events, have instilled fear in some of us, fear to pursue our dreams, fear to experience life, fear to challenge the status quo and fear to exist. How long should we wait before “the world is right” so that we can start living again? Some of us may not be in close proximity of these events, but that does not mean we are exempt from an assuming duty of care. Duty to create the change we want to see in the world, duty to encourage one another and duty to ensure there is fair bargaining so as to avoid conflict, which in turn leads to these unwelcomed events. Demur is a place of escape and a celebration of some the things that are right and enjoyable in this world. A picture can paint a thousand words and Cool Ras Art is helping us spread positivity as he shares his art and works with us. Jackie Got Lemons remind us that life is for living in colour and not living up tight and Neni Uberi and her team present a wonderful editorial, showing we can coexistence in Contrast and still paint a beautiful picture. A Fashionable Culture is a life that is lived with no limits and to the fullest. Embracing and sharing everything you are and espousing some from others. For the world to be right again, we have to make it right. What is your contribution? Until next time… Noreen Chada, Editor, @noreenchada

Chris Clark (Cooli Ras Art), is an artist who using his work as a tool of empowerment. From addressing current affairs with his work to mentoring young children in his community, Chris is painting the world a better colour.
Well, my art is mostly influenced by my life experiences. I treat the canvas like a journal and my art is my story. Some things I draw inspiration from are, growing up Black in America, the natural hair movement, and issues facing the Black community.
With my work I aim to uplift, educate, and inspire the Black community. I just want us to be proud of what we see when we look in the mirror. We are “the standard.
There is not one piece that I have created where I haven’t thought “I could have done that better”. Like many artists, I’m very critical of my work, but I’m starting to embrace my style more and more. All the love I receive from my work helps with that.
To those who say, “Get a real job”, I say look around! The home you live in started as a drawing on a piece of paper by an artist. The vehicle you drive started as a drawing on a piece of paper by an artist. The clothes you have on all started out as drawings on a piece of paper by an artist. Art is a vital part of our lives. It’s all around us and without artists this world wouldn’t exist. Not only is being an artist a real job, it’s the most important job of all.
Following your passion is very hard, but what’s even harder is not trying and living a life of regret. My biggest fear in life is getting to my old age and wondering what if I had tried this, or pursued that. Even if I’m not successful, I can at least say I tried. My advice to someone would be to simply do what you love the money is a bonus. Don’t worry about making money off top. Just do what you love, work hard, and never give up on your passion. I’ve been doing art all my life and it wasn’t until about 3 years ago that I decided to put myself out there. It wasn’t easy and I didn’t make any money at first, but I stuck with it and it has surely paid off.
I’m all over social media! You can connect with me on Facebook at Cooli Ras Art, on Instagram @cooli_ras_art, and on Twitter @ cooli_ras_art. I also have prints and a few original pieces for sale at coolirasart.bigcartel.com

How do you source the clothes you use in your shoots? Through a lot of reading and researching fashion blogs and websites for different designers. I also have a source list that I created at the beginning of my career, where I have different types of designers, showrooms & PR agencies to request pulls from in different states and countries. What were you hoping to achieve with this shoot? I wanted to play with the lighting together with the fabrics and texture of each garment. It was important to me that the model stood out more in each image and the silhouette of the clothes helped with that. What are the essential items you feel make a great shoot? I don't think there is one item that makes a great shoot. In order to have a great shoot you have to definitely work as a team because everything has to fall into place. It's not just the clothes that make a shoot look unique or trendy. A shoot needs to have a story behind it, a character who comes alive through each picture and a team working together to make that happen. If you could be any fashion item, what item would you be and why? I would totally be a pair Gucci studded heels. I'm a shoeaholic and I love the nerdy style. Gucci is one of my favourite brands.
Alessandro Michelle is a genius, I love the way he combines colours and embellishments on the shoes. Is your own style reflected in your work? Not really, my personal style is very feminine and sexy but most of the time I still like the nerdy look. When I am styling & art directing a shoot it is a totally different process, I base my styling on fashion eras, fashion icons, fabrics or depending on the specific topic that we are trying to convey through the photography. How do you get potential clients to notice you and your work? The key to getting noticed and getting clients is to do a lot of free work and show the industry what you can do, always remember that you are selling yourself as a brand. I know that's the hard part of being a freelancer but with time you realise that with a lot of hard work and dedication you can get more clients, it's like every time you work with someone or meet a new team it’s also a new opportunity in the industry that could lead you to a potential job or a really good project. Sometimes it’s not even about the money, sometimes you just want to express yourself as an artist because that’s what you feel you are.

Jackie Got Lemons
Jackie Got Lemons are a sweet and nutritious alternative indie rock band based in Melbourne, Australia. Comprising of bass, drums and vocals, Jackie Got Lemons aim for quirky references to today´s culture movement and senseless human daily behaviour in the form of a satire.
Thank you! I have a background in fashion so our images are influenced by that. We also work with an amazing Italian fashion photographer, his name is Paco Matteo Li Calzi, he’s just incredible at what he does, and really fantastic to work with. He’s the one who captured our promo images.
An experimental product brought to us by Sharon, a Spanish comedian/ singer who found her inspiration writing songs in poor English. Bass player Karl, sick of playing for corporates and getting fat on gig chicken and Cameron, drummer with an impeccable skill for lateness. We chatted with Sharon to find out who this Jackie chick is and what she has done with the lemons.
Your band’s name is Jackie Got Lemons. Who is Jackie and what has she done with the Lemons?
We saw your page on Instagram, the colours on your page immediately caught our attention, there’s just something about you guys, you seem quirky and cool.
Well, it’s quite silly! We got the idea when my sister received a housewarming gift from a friend named Jackie, and we named the tree after her. It was a lemon tree that never actually harvested, until later when my sister finally saw a small lemon growing on the tree, and she came inside and said ‘Jackie got lemons!’. We thought it would be an amazing name for a band, so that’s how it came to be.

It’s funny because a lot of people think that I’m Jackie! If you look at the photos on our website and social media, you will see that we don’t have any lemons in the images, we’ve used all the other fruits in our photos except for lemons, so it’s kind of just a funny thing that we all felt just goes with us as a band because we are the kind of people who are always joking around like that. It also gets people wondering about who this Jackie is and about the mysterious lemons! How did the guys react to the name? Did they like it straight away as a name for your band? Yeah they did! I first suggested it to Karl, who is my brother-in-law and our amazing bass player and Producer, so he is involved in the writing process with everything from lyrics to music, he does all the magic. Since we are family, we find it easy to play music and write lyrics together. Later Cameron, our drummer, came on board, and it just went smoothly.
What is the best thing about being in a band with a family member? Everything just goes really smoothly as we already have balance in our personal relationship. It’s great because we always communicate with honesty and trust, we can say anything to each other. It’s quite amazing to work so easily with someone who is such a wonderful artist while being able to express yourself honestly. You’ve got your new single “Nothing To Wear”, coming out this month. Tell us more about it? We will be doing a launch of the single at a really good venue called The Worker’s Club in Melbourne. We will be releasing “Nothing to Wear” along with a B-Side titled “My Girl” this month (date to be confirmed) The song talks about when you’re getting ready but you start to panic because you think you have nothing to wear although you have a wardrobe full of clothes! Then you try everything on and think it looks horrible, and finally decide on the first outfit you tried on. We want our songs to be relatable to daily things that happen to us and how people interact with these things and with each other. It’s intended to be a reflection on stupid human behaviour through wit.
Photography by Paco Matteo Li Calzi
What would you say is your favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe right now? That’s a tough one! I have more than one. Usually I always go for anything black, it makes me feel good and it fits with everything, I have a lot of black items in my wardrobe, it’s like a saviour.
Your debut album, due out later this year, is called “None of Your Business”. What is the subject matter of the album? It’s mostly about just how we see society right now. There is a song called “Tuesday” on the album, it talks about when you go out on a “school night” and suffering the after effects of a heavy night out. You can see everyone doing love songs that we all love listening to, but we also need someone to address all other issues that millennials face with a sense of humour. I’m a millennial, so it was important for me
to talk about and criticise these things. For example, I’m an immigrant, so we wrote a song about what it’s like to be an immigrant. We also have a song that’s titled “None of Your Business”, and another song called “iRelationship 2.0”, which reflects mockingly on how we interact with things like online dating and how it’s just not possible anymore to go over to someone and be like hey, let’s go on a date, you’re always just swiping right on your phone, right? Do you think the mixing of social media with dating has made it a lot harder for people to ask each other on dates face to face? Exactly, because we created this routine that you have to follow. I think we are so afraid to go back in time and just approach a random person in public, because we are so much busier now and online dating is just more convenient. What sort of reaction are you getting from people when they hear your music? We’re getting a really good reaction. We haven’t officially released a single yet and we’re getting lots of comments on our music and lots of followers who are excited for us, it’s unbelievable! But even if the album comes out and no one listens to it, I would still be happy with it because it’s something that I love doing, it’s all fun. What sort of advice would you like to give to other bands starting out? I’m normally the one who takes advice, I listen to everyone as much as I can and try to get as much feedback as I can. Just love what you do and fall in love with your creations. That will reflect in your work. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? “Don’t get drawn to what people are saying, and just do what you like so that you don’t move too far away from what you originally wanted to do.” Go with
whatever your heart is telling you. It’s good to get advice, but still make sure at the end of the day you hold back a little bit, because after all it’s your art. If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? That’s a really tough one, I have so many names in mind, but anyone who would ask to collaborate with me I’d just say yes, lol. But I’d love to collaborate with Benjamin Booker, I love his music and the good vibe he has. If you could use any fashion item to describe yourself, what item would you choose and why? Sunglasses, to hide my regrets! Where can we keep up with Jackie, her lemons, news and releases? We are on a lot of online platforms, we have our website, as well as a Facebook page, and an Instagram page. I’ve been trying to get into twitter, but it feels like I’m an old person trying to learn the internet from the beginning, it’s too much for me!
