Editor’s Letter Dear Loyal Readers,
I
won’t deny it, 2017 has been a great year for Demur. When we said new year, new us at the beginning of this year, we really meant it. It has been exciting to see Demur grow over the past year, almost like watching a child grow. A child trying to take his first steps, falling, and getting back up again. We’ve got some smart-ass kids that joined the team this year and as you can see their contribution to Demur is what has people talking. We launched our first ever pop up party which was a blast and because we loved partying with you cool guys so much, we are already working to make sure we will be back with another one. We are building Demur to be the number one media platform in all that is fashion, music, art and culture. We aim to be the brand you tell all your friends about to make yourself sound cool. As we continue, we will also not forget to address social issues that affect us, in a fashionable manner of course. We want to be the voice of the cool people. The December issue features four friends from London who go by the name of Daze, a sculptor from New York, Laurie Barton, we get a bit sombre and talk about whether we should be taking a knee here in the UK following the Colin Kaepernick movement and to lighten things up, we have compiled a list of movies every fashionista should see. If I don’t bump into you on my travels, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season with all the food you can possibly eat and all the rest you can possibly get and a healthy kick ass 2018!

Fashionista Films Every
Should See
A
s you may have noticed we are definitely in the winter season right now. The cold nights on the sofa are always made perfect with a warm drink and an enchanting movie to watch. We have compiled a list of films every fashionista should see.
The Intern
Starting a new job can be a difficult challenge as it is, even more so if you’re already retired. Looking to get back into the game, 70-yearold widower Ben Whittaker played by Robert De Niro, seizes the opportunity to become a senior intern at an online fashion site. He becomes popular with his colleagues, but his charm and wisdom help him to develop a special relationship with Boss Jules, played by Anne Hathaway. Why Every Fashionista Should See This This is a film that explores and reveals the reality of the fashion industry, where it’s challenging for all age groups no matter what experience you may have. It also focuses on how fast paced the industry is and the strain a job in the industry can have on personal relationships.
8
The September Issue
Anna Wintour, the legendary Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine for twenty years, is considered by many to be the most powerful and polarizing figure in fashion. Hidden behind her trademark bob and sunglasses, she has never allowed anyone to scrutinize the inner workings of her magazine. Until now. As the audience we are taken inside a world we only think we know by filmmaker R.J. Cutler’s with unprecedented access. The 2007 September issue was and still remains the biggest ever, weighing over four pounds, selling thirteen million copies, and impacting the $300-billion global fashion industry more than any other single publication. Why Every Fashionista Should See This A little more like a documentary I will admit but we see a close-up of the delicate creative chemistry it takes to remain at the top of the ever-changing fashion field. Learning more about the industry itself, especially from the top end magazine can help you fashionistas with some industry tips.
27 Dresses
A romcom like no other, Katherine Heigl stars as the beloved bridesmaid Jane Nichos. After serving as a bridesmaid 27 times, yes you heard right, keeping every single dress may I add, Katherine struggles with the idea of standing by her sister’s side as her sibling marries the man she’s secretly in love with. Why Every Fashionista Should See This Truly a must see just for those 27 unique bridesmaid dresses Jane has stored in that small wardrobe. A truly inspirational film for the lesson of a loyal friend who never misses out on being the readily bridesmaid for her friends on their big day and being selfless for never letting anyone down.
Clueless
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the movie, it’s about a teenage girl experiencing teenage girl things; such as dating, high school, teachers, and an overprotective dad. Mona May, the costume designer, has created outfits that are so relevant today. Why Every Fashionista Should See This Clueless is the ultimate 90’s teen fashion movie hands down. If you have seen clueless, you know that American Apparel would be Cher’s closet. The outfits are the main must see for this movie, featuring trends and styles that haven’t gone unnoticed. So there really is no wonder why Iggy Azalea recreated the iconic yellow Clueless outfits in her video for ‘Fancy’, we could never be tired of the bright, structured yet feminine, schoolgirl look.
The Dressmaker
The Dressmaker is a 2015 Australian revenge comedy-drama written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse. Starring Kate Winslet as a femme fatale in the titular role of the dressmaker, her character Tilly returns to her small Australian town to take care of her mentally unstable mother. The film explores the themes of revenge and creativity and was described by Moorhouse as ‘Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven with a sewing machine.’ Why Every Fashionista Should See This As heart wrenching and hilarious as it is, the movie has a unique plot line. The way in which Tilly creates the dresses for the various individual characters, including the shy police officer who secretly is a cross dresser is exciting and endearing. The promotion of this is so positive and enlightening that everyone buys her dresses. If you need any marketing pointers, you can learn a thing or two from Tilly.

Legally Blonde
Reese Witherspoon plays Elle Woods, who literally has it all. She wants nothing more than to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III, but there is one thing stopping him from proposing: She is too blonde. With this, Elle rallies all of her resources and gets into Harvard, determined to win her man back. Why Every Fashionista Should See This For starters, you need to see that education and determination are very good attributes to have, Also, everyone and anyone can make, so it doesn’t matter what you look like you can still try.
Fashion Blogger Hazel Wood said her favourite film was the comedic drama featuring poor Anne Hathaway, who has to experience the brutal reality of fashion and her very demanding boss played by Meryl Streep, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. Hazel says she likes this movie because it shows a different side to the fashion industry. Sustainable Fashion Blogger, Katie Roberts, expressed: ‘My favourite fashion film is actually ‘Confessions Of A Shopaholic’. From a sustainability point of view, this film can be referenced over and over. It shows the impact that advertising and marketing can have on our psyche, and flow that over-consumption can have on our lives, livelihoods and relationships. The best bit about this film is that it’s educational and funny and most of us can relate to Ms. Bloomwood on some level.’ Sarah Garrett-Hodoniczky of Sustainable Fashion, an online eco-boutique says, “My favourite movie has to be ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’. I love the movement in it, the flowing fabrics and
how they slowed things down and focused on those aspects. The use of colour is so moving too, in fact, I love everything about this movie and have watched it over and over.” My personal favourite film based on the intricate costume design has to be the glitz and glamour of ‘The Great Gatsby’, not only does it make you want to get back to the twinkling 1920’s and dance but to dress up in jewelled headpieces and glamorous gowns. And who could miss a film that stars Leonardo Di Caprio?

The Therapeutic Art of Sculpturing
T
his is one lady who is truly passionate about her work. Laurie Barton believes that art empowers people because art is a joyful and miraculous thing. Like many others who do it as a hobby, art is a form of therapy for sculptor Laurie. Getting her hands stuck into clay and forming 3D lifelike art piece has gotten Laurie through so many of life’s trials. Laurie took her hands away from the clay to talk to us about her work and art therapy. D: How do you go from idea to having a full completed piece? L: All figurative sculpture that eventually will be cast in bronze begins with wire armature fashioned in the shape of a human skeleton. An armature gives the clay something to adhere to and provides stability. To construct an armature, I fasten the wire skeleton to a steel rod that is positioned in the middle of the torso’s figure. Then, the steel rod is attached to a vertical metal pipe that is mounted on a board. At this point, I begin adding clay to the wire form or armature. Typically, I use oil based clay which does not dry out and is best suited for the creation of
a bronze figurative sculpture. When I first started as a sculptor, I actually made my own oil-based clay which is a very involved and labor-intensive process, but it is also economical. Even if my piece eventually will be clothed, I always sculpt a fully developed naked body. This gives me a chance to hone my knowledge of human anatomy and ensures that the clothes will look and fit correctly once I reach that stage. The key to success at this stage is two-fold: a strong working knowledge of human anatomy and a lot of patience. Mastering the human form is challenging and complex endeavor. It is literally a journey in which I learn something new from every piece I make. Once I am satisfied with the naked body, I construct the clothes. Once the clay model or maquette is completed, it goes to the foundry for mold making and casting. After the piece is cast, a patina is applied and then mounted on a base. The entire process for one piece can take up to 6 months from start to finish depending on the complexity of the sculpture.
13
D: How difficult is it to make a living as a sculptor? L: It’s different for every sculptor. I came to this with a huge passion and love for the medium. I think that as a result, everything just fell into place naturally. Things have unfolded in ways I could have never imaged. D: What is so therapeutic about being a sculptor? L: For me, creating art is extremely therapeutic. I have worked in different mediums but found my passion working with clay. I love the tactile feeling of putting my hands in the raw clay and the experience of creating something from nothing. When I’m working in my studio, I become absorbed and focused on how the art is created and how it develops. This creates a feeling of passion for me which is completely consuming. The process draws me in and while I am working, it’s as if time stands still. I am in a zone of focused
attention and total bliss at the same time! D: What is your mission with your work? L: My mission is to create beautiful sculpture that inspires the viewer, evokes a sense of hope and is edifying for the greater good. I love illustrating a story as much as I love creating images which illustrate themes which are positive and uplifting in nature. D: How long does it usually take to complete one sculpture? L: This depends on the complexity of the piece and the amount of detail involved. I spend a considerable amount of time working on the figure before adding the detail of clothes. This can take 4-6 weeks for a single figure. If I am doing a double piece, that time expands. How the two figures related or communicate with one another can also change. Sometime a design which seems right in my mind my not translate as I expect and I will need to make revisions and changes. It is very important to have a flexible direction when it comes to sculpture.

REAL TALK
Take a knee
S
SHOULD WE TAKE A KNEE HERE IN THE UK?
ome consider sportsmen to be highly paid inconsiderate individuals who are out of touch with society. Of course, sportsmen themselves would say that’s further from the truth. You may have seen several posts with the tag #takeaknee or #VeteransForKaepernick the movement which was started by the American footballer Colin Kaepernick. Colin instigated the protest to not stand whilst the national anthem is playing before the start of a game and this has gained wider attention with other players following suit. In the last recent years there has been a rise in the oppression of people of colour, although some people believe the subjugation has always been there, it is now just publicised more.
Colin’s protest is based on refusing to honour the country’s flag by not standing during the national anthem. This follows after several lives of black people were lost at the hands of police officers who were subsequently not punished for their actions. This sparked the Black Lives Matter movement which also crossed over to the UK. The various Black Lives Matter protests have been branded as a security threat in what seems a ploy to take the protest out of context. As much as Colin might be a martyr for the people he was actually voted as the most disliked player in a recent NFL fan poll and there have also been videos of people burning Colin’s jersey circulating, not to mention the death threats Colin has received.
22
This begs the question, is it worth risking your career to stand for something you strongly believe in whilst offending the decision makers? Why does speaking out cause so much discomfort and if the decision makers are offended by the protests how will the minority people ever win?
Should politics be kept out of sports, an entertainment that usually brings all different kinds of people together? President Donald Trump has suggested that any players who do not stand for the national anthem should be fired or suspended, this of course caused much more aggravation from the players and incited them to protest even further. There has been a long history of police brutality in the UK for a long period of time, whether it is now less reported or just completely ignored the issue is still very much real here in the UK. There have been deaths of black people at the hands of the police for years. We have seen videos and stories of
police officers here in the UK abusing their powers and the victims left uncompensated for their inconveniences. Like Kanye West said racism is still alive but it’s just concealed. When will we get on to an equal footing where speaking out is no longer dubbed as rebellion. We are not asking to be accepted nor to be loved, we are just asking if you can’t accept us nor love us, leave us to our own devices. I hate to ever use race as an excuse and anytime I feel there has been a hint of racism in many cases I try my best to rise above it Ignorance has contributed to the lack of action, no one will accept that there is an issue and unless you
are aware that there is an issue you don’t feel the need to fix anything. This leaves many people with the option to distrust the police, the very individuals who are appointed to protect and serve us. As long as we continue to treat racism as a taboo racism will always be an issue. Following the Brexit vote, it is said the rate of racial crimes has risen and it appears it is not just black people suffering this institutional racism. Should we also take a knee here in the UK or is the unjust treatment of minorities in the UK not as real as it is in the US? Do we have enough integrity to sacrifice our positions for justice?

Wiley announces 2018 ‘Godfather’ UK Tour
T
he Godfather of Grime, Wiley, has announced his biggest ever headline show to date, at Brixton’s O2 Academy on Friday 2nd March, unveiling a 6-date tour of the UK and Ireland, taking place across February 2018. The tour follows the huge success of his latest album ‘Godfather’ and his historic showcase at Camden’s Roundhouse. The Roundhouse show went near-viral, with a veritable roll call of grime royalty coming out in support the Godfather. BBK members Skepta, JME and Frisco took their turns, as did Devlin, Lethal B, P. Money and Ghetts, with Stormzy topping off the selection of surprise guests. With his status reaffirmed as an innovator of the genre, his upcoming ‘Godfather II’ album builds on the success of the former, featuring the highly acclaimed single ‘Call The Shots’; a cleverly lyricised tale of his rise to power. The production, boosted by bass-heavy chords and Wiley’s typically sharp lyrics, has been widely praised since release, with collaborative artist JME providing candid bars which serve as the perfect counter-punch on the track. Following the release of his eagerly anticipated autobiography Eskiboy, Wiley’s ‘Godfather’ tour will see the curator playing out many of his ‘Godfather II’ tracks for the first time in a live environment. DAZE These Four Friends Are Daze
M
eet DAZE, the twenty somethings who are on our radar as the ones to watch next year. With the release of their debut single ‘Friends’ this summer, these boys have certainly proved they’re worth a listen. Having played around with their sound they’ve settled on a dark melodic sound with
‘lyrics that highlight the day to day struggles of modern youth, but in dad swag’ so they say. ‘Friends’ is written from the perspective of a father speaking to his child, giving them advice about growing up not knowing who to trust in life, and how family will always be there no matter what.
35
Since the boys were kind enough to share all this wisdom on their single ‘Friends’, we thought we’d get to know about their friendship a little better. I sat down with them and asked how they all got to known each other, and it’s a story spanning over a decade. Sam (Vocals) and Luke (Lead Guitar) have know each other since they were nine having met at North London’s Finsbury skate-park. The boys told me stories of what can only be described as cheeky teenage antics; sneaking out of the house to meet up late at night and going skating through central London then getting ‘bollocked’ the next day and hiding from Sam’s dad as he came home from work past the skate-park – “but that is what really built our friendship,” the boys say. Sam and Luke then met Tino (Bass) under, well, let’s say interesting circumstances, whilst the guys were looking for a bass player and of course Tino was by no means a bass player. “He turned up to a rehearsal, picked up a bass and just started playing… and it all just clicked.”
Images Alex Mitchell Photography
I asked them in reference to their single, that considering ‘change is uncomfortable, but there to help us grow’. How was losing their old drummer Jacob? – “It was super traumatic at the time, we really thought that would be the end of Daze… but then we met Oli and it was love at first sight. The chemistry that we have now is really special and we think it’s something that really comes across in the new songs we’ve been writing.” However, it’s no longer a matter of friendship anymore for DAZE, they’re family now which is fitting considering they wrote ‘Friends’ with a family bond in mind. “Our rehearsals are equivalent to a family gathering. We’ll practice for a few hours, then crack open a few beers and play pool,” as you do when you are family. They even do big family dinners together where Sam will invite everyone over to his mums for a “banging Vietnamese BBQ and we’ll eat spring rolls until we all feel sick.” By this point we were a few drinks in and it was time to get deep and talk about the future, which is looking very bright for these boys. With ‘Friends’ doing well and going down a storm with fans, they’ve been in their studio writing some new ‘tunes’. They’re planning to release a few more singles in 2018 before an EP that is currently in the
works. While I can’t let you in on any more of their upcoming plans I can say that it is certainly looking like 2018 is going to be their year with a whole host of goodies lined up for their fans.

Budweiser Budvar W
e were fortunate enough to recently attend the launch of Budweiser Budvar Tankové Pivo (Tank Beer) pouring at The Trading House, London. On the night we were educated on the making of this water, barley and hops brew. As with Budvar Original,‘Tankové Pivo’ Tank beer is matured for 90 days before it leaves the cellars of the Budvar brewery in Budweis, Czech Republic. However, Tankove Pivo is unpasteurised, meaning a fresher beer with a taste as smooth and full flavoured as if in the brewery itself. After maturation the beer then travels the 850 miles to The Trading House from southern Bohemia in temperature-controlled, airtight tanks, to ensure each pint is brewery-fresh. Although the Tankové Pivo is driven from Budweis to London as quick as possible, Budvar is not a brewery known for taking shortcuts. A simple list of ingredients including whole cone Saaz hops, a single Czech malt and ice age soft water from an aquifer beneath the brewery delivers a pale Czech super-smooth lager, famous for its almost unparalled combined brewing and lagering time of 102 days. With louder flavours, due to being unpasteurised, Tankové Pivo ensures the Budvar flavours are bold and the texture is smooth delivering quality pints that are poured in just 10 seconds. In fact, the only
thing that is missing is the smell of the Moravian malt from the Brewhouse but you can taste it with every sip. The Trading House will join The Botanist, Sheffield and The Botanist, Newcastle, in adding Tankové Pivo to the extensive list of beers and ales which are already on the NWTC Anthology. Tanks are also homed at recently opened The Canal House in Birmingham and has been a steady favourite at The Oasthouse in Manchester, which saw its 200,000th pint of Budvar Tankove Pivo poured last month. Kieran Hartley, Beer Guru for The New World Trading says: “We are in the midst of a beer revolution, where flavour and authenticity are highly sought after, and now lager fans want to jump on board too. Beer drinkers from all categories
39
are turning towards beer with more flavour. We are thrilled to have cuttingedge tank beer technology ensuring every pint is fresh, wholesome and perfect… every time.” Simon George, UK Managing Director, Budweiser Budvar UK comments: “We have had a great response to Budweiser Budvar Tankové Pivo in The New World Trading pubs around the country so we’re excited to introduce tank beer to this fantastic venue. The tanks at the Trading House will be familiar to those that have visited the brewery in Budweis as they are scale replicas of the tanks in our cellars where we mature the Budvar for 90 days – the freshness and flavour of Tankové Pivo is like drinking from the brewery tanks themselves.”

WHAT ELSE IS
GOING ON? The App That Will Turn You Into A Smart Art Connoisseur You know that moment you are in the club and a song you like comes on and you don’t know who sings it, so you open up Shazam. What do you do then when you see a piece of art and you are just eager to find who created this masterpiece? Fear not there is Smartify. Smartfiy is the app that gives you information about a piece of art by just scanning the art piece with your smartphone. The Smartfiy app was launched last month at the Royal Academy of Arts and has already been dubbed as “a Shazam for the art world”. Smartify is already in use in over 30 of the world’s major galleries and museums, including the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Met in New York and LACMA in Los Angeles. Not only does the app offer you information about the artists, but you can also access recorded interviews with some of the artists available on the app making it a great companion on your next trip to the art gallery. You can also save and share with other Smartify users your favourite pieces.
Dine In The Nude We have a thing for food here at Demur HQ, so when we hear of a new restaurant opening trust, we try to be the first in line, sort of like those guys who wait in line for days for the new iPhone. When we heard about this new restaurant in Paris where you get to eat in your birthday suit, we kind of paused and asked ourselves ‘Is our love for food really that deep?’ The aptly named, O’Naturel are inviting guests to the oncegritty 12th arrondissement in Paris to just chew down some food in a relaxed atmosphere with other naked diners. If you are just curious but still want to preserve some modesty, you do get a napkin to put over your lap as you eat. For £30 for a main dish we say it’s worth a try. Go and check it out for us and let us know how you get on.
Europe’s First Under Water Restaurant Still sticking to our love for food, we are heading over to Norway to have a look at Under the underwater restaurant opening in 2019. Underwater will be half-submerged, resembling both a periscope and sunken ship. Talk about being close to the sea, the view you will see as you dine will of course be of the sea and possibly mariners. We don’t know if the seafood will be freshly caught but the restaurant will be serving dishes based on the local cuisine. This will be the first underwater restaurant in Europe.
