July 2012

Welcome to another edition of Demur,

So many exciting things have happened within our organisation over the past few months. We have recently acquired a publishing deal with N.68 Media which means we now have backing and someone believes in our vision. Any way enough of that. We had our first official shoot at our new studios in Penge on our lovely balcony summer couldn't have come at a better time! We will soon be able to enjoy our barbeques and

working outside when the sun does finally show up of which we are hopeful it will sometime soon. July

continues to be an exciting month for us with a growing team and growing readership we certainly are a force to be reckoned with. The downfall of it all is I can't even get away from it all and take a break , however as I always say if you do what you enjoy you will never have to work a day in your life in that case I may have

retired a lifetime ago. We have our pop up shop running from the 27th July 29th July 2012 which obviously

incorporates the Olympic fun , I must say you will not want to miss this. 3 days of fashion, art and live music

right here at our offices and a view from our balcony to kill for, if you miss out on this I'm hoping your excuse is worthy for consideration.

This is issue has developed compared to the last ones and you know there is nothing wrong with growth, We have obviously maintained some sort of consistency and we made sure we listened to your views ( aren't we wonderful...this is the part you nod your head in agreement), we took some of the articles you t old us you

loved and we have implemented them into the structure of the magazine and voila ...we bring you The Hatter Lady issue and not to mention you have two covers to choose from or just get both if you are keen collector. We played with the idea of ladies who like to lunch and the hidden agendas behind those fancy outfits and

hats. We all worked effortlessly on this issue and whilst maintaining the concept of community we are now

offering more than just a magazine we now have a membership subscription where you still get your magazine but you also get job listings, offers from our affiliates and free listings in our magazine and website if you are business. With all these exciting things coming we can only hope that you will continue to be a part of it. Live is for living not living uptight, so come live with us. Pick up an issue and pass it on. Until next time. Noreen Chada

season with Kate Middleton, and many A listers at the Cannes Film Festival all embracing the summer’s new super chic frilly look. Here at Demur we’re happy to welcome back the traditional 80’s peplum retro trend which we have spotted down at Armani, Givenchy and Vera Wang spring runways, Whether you opt for a peplum fitted jackets a frilly skirt, or an evening dress this summer it is sure to make a wonderfully flirty touch to your 2012 S/S wardrobe and any upcoming occasion. The peplum style is flattering on most body types, but getting it right for your own is a bit of a challenge, luckily for us though, peplum offers an outfit to suit every frame. The safer option is for a peplum kneelength pencil skirt that adds graceful volume to the hips and is easy to match with simple neutral coloured tops. A longer hemline and simple neckline is more fitting for a night out, but beware of the flare, and keep accessories to a minimum. The peplum style on flowing gowns looks its best on tall, slender bodies. Choose subtle solid colours paired with nude accessories to work this style well. For the curvaceous why not opt for tight knee length dresses like Kim Kardashian. These little numbers are tailored tight to the waist and perfectly flatter a sexy silhouette body. Peplum skirts and dresses are probably best reserved for formal events like weddings or cocktail parties. However, a peplum pencil skirt may pass for officewear, if accented minimally.Blouses, on the other hand, are fair game for any occasion, and look especially cute worn with a pair of shorts and some espadrilles. This pretty peplum look is a must have this season, perfect for day to night wear and formal, or otherwise. – Emma Munbodh

Are You Ready For Summer 2012? Trends to look out for....

Art Collective – Jean Michel Basquiat – “I am not a black artist , I am an artist” A middle child out of four Jean-Michel Basquiat hailed from Brooklyn, New York .Not many children can even speak at the age of four but Basquait was a different child, at 4 he was already reading and writing and this made him stand out amongst other children of his age. He didn’t stop there at 11 Basquait was a bilingual youngster who was fluent in French, English and Spanish. His surroundings provided much for his influence which saw him rise to international prominence as he was soon included in the neo-expressionism art movement. His mother who strongly encouraged him in his work was put in a mental institution whilst Basquiat was still young and around at that same time Basquiat himself was hit by a car which led to him having his spleen removed to add to that turmoil his parents divorced and Basquiat was left with no choice but to live with his father and sister Though Basquiats’ work had a lot of cultural influcene just like the similar phenomenon that is Hip Hop which was on the rise at the same time, Basquiats’ art was more welcomed and embraced.

Facing a troublesome childhood he ran away from home and slept on park benches, however he was soon returned to his father by the police and the relationship broke down with his father when Basquiat dropped out of school and his father kicked him out of the house which drove Basquiat to start making a living out of selling T-Shirts and postcards whilst living with friends. Basquiat and his friend Al Diaz started off spray painting graffiti on many buildings around New York they were known collectively as SAMO which stood for “same old shit”. Basquiat also befriended fellow artist Andy Warhol after he met him in a restaurant and showed him his work which Warhol was so impressed with that they ended up working together. His popularity grew strongly among pop culture and you can spot Basquiat in Blondie’s’ music video for the single Rapture as the DJ in the club. He briefly dated Madonna and worked with David Bowie as he expanded his artistry into music. Basquiat often painted in expensive Armani suits and would even appear in public in the same paint-splattered suits.

2012 is the ultimate year for colour trending. Colour blocking is a continuous trend in Spring, and designer Tommy Hilfiger confirmed this in his Spring collection which echoed a lot of colour blocking. Pastel colours seem to be a big trend this year and can be seen on many artist chiefly Nicki Minaj. Bold colours will always be a trend but this year there is a big buzz with coloured blazers and the daring colour orange (if you are bold enough). Another colour trending for the Spring/ Summer season is neon. Neon on leather clothing makes a bold statement and shows confidence . Also look out for abstract print designs.

De'ja vu 80s are back !

What comes around goes back around ,and this is not about karma .

Fashion comes and goes with different influential aspects and looks. I am going to rewind back to 1980 a year some of us weren’t even in existence .They were various interesting yet puzzling trends that were embraced in that century and current trends echo the comeback of the 80’s .It has often been described as a horrible decade and it will most likely make you cringe . 80s fashion gave us Guess jeans, wedgies ( they were the red bottom Louboutins back then..), jelly shoes, bracelets, satin ties, Izod polo shirts (with the collar up), and “Relax” T-shirts thanks to Frankie Goes To Hollywood (a popular band at the time)..remember those? This era also influenced magazines like Vogue to get polka dots and zebra stripping in the editorials which was considered bold and eccentric at the time. Brand names also became important as a fashion statement, making Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein household names, among others, if you didn’t have a brand in your wardrobe you were not worthy. Dress for recession ,recycled 1980’s

that’s how you describe the year shoulder pads ,tribal print ,neon leggings caused a lot of

chaos on the high streets .They had the retro hair from the 1980 has flourishing and making a mark together with the clothes ,being bold and in your face .Fashion was important back then it influenced attitude.

This helped clarify your identity but also insure individuality, which is common now among those who are in the spotlight take for example people like Tyga .Tyga the Rack City rapper is bringing back the 1980 hip-hop fashion trend like how the young LL Cool J ,Run DMC ,Salt and Pepa came through and caused a storm within the fashion industry, remember the Kangol hats and the shell toe Adidas trainers, those are some timeless classics that will live on through fashion. Things such as Dre Beats headphones were also inspired by the 1980s because at a certain point, people were lazy to carry around the big boom box radios with cassette player and speakers so this was condensed into something more practical and portable .The boom box look was completed with some nice trainers specifically Converse High-tops (Chuck Taylors)

Whether you were a girl or guy fashion trends in the 80’s fashion crossed the gender barrier. Wearing Converse became a statement because you were able to personalise your own high tops with pictures, and writing and even as far as engraving tattoos with quotes and names. The 80’s was a fashionable year that spoke volumes

What LTDO is all about?

59 seconds with Le T abo u r et D 'O r

My name is Serwaa Adjei-Pellé and I am the founder and CEO of Le Tabouret D'Or (LTDO). We are a luxury eboutique that is focused on bridging the gap between the most coveted African fashion brands and the US market. African fashion need not be exotic and out of reach but with the launch of LTDO, can now me right at our customer's door step.

What do you think is taking people so long to appreciate African Fashion?

I think people have always appreciated African fashion. There just needed to be a change in the way African fashion was perceived. New collections on the runway have brought African fashion into a realm that the West can now identify with. Rather than viewing it as exotic and unattainable people are now starting to see how African fashion can have a place is their own closets. With this change in perception and the increase in distribution streams, African fashion can now be even more appreciated and attainable.

What is the meaning behind the name and does it influence how you operate your business at all? Le Tabouret D'Or literally translated means 'The Golden Stool'. The Golden Stool is a cultural

treasure of the Ashanti people of Ghana. I liked the name because of its dual meaning –symbol of prominence and luxury— and most importantly, a salute to my Ashanti Heritage. Living in the US, choosing to use the French version of the Golden Stool made the phrase sound a little more luxurious. Using French is also a little nod to the fact that I married into a French speaking family. Our name absolutely influences the way we operate. As a luxury fashion business, we aim to be a symbol of the prominence African fashion can attain within the fashion industry at large. It's a formidable goal but everything we do is focused on reaching it.

How do you feel the “You decide We sell Campaign will help you interact with your customers?

The new 'You Decide - We Sell' feature on is meant to give our customer a voice. As I click

through fashion blogs, it is apparent that fashion lovers are vocal about their likes and dislikes. This new feature will allow our customer to voice their opinion as well as see the impact they can have once we sell the wining pieces on LTDO.co

Ultimately, with this feature, we can better understand the needs of our customer in order to give them more of what they want.

Consistency Key to Building a Successful Business I have seen several individuals who start up great Businesses and go on to become successful and I have also seen individuals who start up

Businesses and end up giving up 6 months along the way. There are certain key attributes which can be spotted among successful people and one of these is consistency.

I like to define consistency as the ability to continually do the right thing despite of any opposition, challenges, obstacle or emotions. When

starting a new Business, you will always encounter different obstacles along the way that may try to deter your progress; this cannot be avoided. One of the myths that some startups seem to believe is that running a Business is supposed to be smooth sailing. I always advice my clients to read autobiographies of highly successful Businessmen in order to read about their struggles and challenges through their startup process.

Consistency goes handinhand with Perseverance and vision. In order to be consistent, you must have a vision of what you would like to achieve. Once you have a goal or vision, it is important to stick to pursuing this goal until you realise it. For example, if you want to own the best hair

salon in London, you may find your shop being empty for the first couple of months of trading, it is important however that you do not give up

and you continue to set a high standard in your shop and the service which you provide. Your standard or level of service must not depend on the type of customer, the age of the customer or any other factor. You must always aim to deliver the best service you can to any type of customer you come across. This is how you can ensure that your customers become your salesforce.

Perseverance is also another factor that works handinhand with consistency. When you start off a new venture, it is important to understand that ‘you are a farmer not a hunter’. Different businesses tend to grow at different speeds. Keep your mind on your vision or goal, surround

yourself with the right people and ensure that you do not give up your drive and passion. The key is to ensure that you surround yourself with people who will encourage and push you along the way.

Get a coach or mentor to work with you if you find yourself slacking.

To conclude, consistency is an attribute that you must adopt if you want to grow a successful Business. Lay out a clear standard for your Business and ensure that you stick to these standards at all times and you will find yourself progressing.

Opy is the founder of Proten™, a Business startup coaching Company. He is also a keynote speaker, trainer and author of the upcoming book entitled “ Turn Your Passion Into Your Profession”. You can contact him on o.onas@protenuk.com or visit www.protenuk.com.
