R A G S T O R IC HES - HIG H F AS H I ON AT LOW PRI CES We women have got a hard year ahead of us. Amid fighting redundancies and the recession, were fighting our own battle: being skint. Let’s face it, after December’s festive rush; we have officially blown the one early pay cheque we get on last minute gifts, Christmas dresses and indeed New Years Eve. But luckily, were in this one together. Here come the seven steps to buying more but spending less.

1. Who said sewing was for grannies? Pay a little trip to your local haberdashery and you’ll be surprised as to what you’ll find. It’s the ultimate place for tracking down unique buttons and bold materials for self customising. Get creative with knitted cardi’s by adding bright buttons and funky sequins to help give it that vintage inspired look. 2. People often assume that you need a fashion qualification to customise, or even create your own clothes. But really, all you need is an imaginative flair for design. Raid your local vintage shop for clothes that still have wear in them. Buying these garments cheap and sprucing them up with scissors or sequins will save you pounds. The best thing about buying second hand is that it’s cheap. So don’t insist on finding the right size, instead, just alter it, or buy big and style out the waist belt. These trends will never go out of fashion.

11

3. It’s the thought that counts. Save money this year with customised gifts. Handmade presents are invaluable, especially if given to a close family or friend. Better still; why not try selling your creations on EBay. It’s simple, profitable and costs next to nothing. 4. Money’s tight, but who said our wardrobes have to suffer? Once you’ve mastered the art of sewing, you can apply your skills to all sorts of things, including repairing old damaged clothes, and redesigning your party wear. Add some sparkly embellishment to evening dresses to cover up any imperfections. Lace and sequins are perfect for hiding signs of wear. 5. Spend less looking good this summer by turning old jeans into summer shorts.

6. Throw a clothes swap party. Have a stylish get together, and bring all your unwanted clothes to one place. This way you can trade shoes, jewellery, clothes and accessories at the cost of absolutely nothing. The great thing about having fashionable friends is that in the future, you can always re-trade. 7. Finally, reduce your carbon footprint buy investing in second-hand. If you’re prepared to rummage, you’ll find some real gems in your local charity shop. Oxfam is original, often retro and always cheap. Fara charity shops usually have vintage sections where you will often find second hand designer items at absolute bargain prices.

Fashion G.H Bass & Co. X huntergather Collaboration Iconic footwear brand G.H. Bass have teamed up with British contemporary menswear label huntergather on a limited edition penny loafer. Together they have created a leather Penny Weejun loafer for women and a Larson Weejun loafer for men, each with a huntergather branded plectrum on the front. Stylist and co-founder of huntergather David Bradshaw says, “When I met Michael Jackson at the Mondrian Hotel in LA for the first fitting of the Scream video I was about to style, he was wearing a fedora, mirrored aviators, a black military tunic with gold braid, skinny black jeans, white terry socks and a pair of well worn, black, classic Bass Weejun penny loafers. Every day on the shoot I saw him rehearse complex

dance routines in those same shoes, his body immersed in an energy hard to describe. Gliding through space, snapping and popping to rhythms he alone could feel, each movement a performance in itself and an incredible privilege to see. I've worn Weejun's ever since.” Huntergather is a fashion label with a fresh take on contemporary masculinity and caters for a creative community including architects, writers, designers, stylists and photographers. The history of G.H. Bass & Co. dates back to Maine in 1876 and George Henry Bass - a man on a simple mission to make the very best shoe. In 1936, G.H. Bass & Co. put a stylish spin on a Norwegian farm shoe designed for “loafing in the field,” and playfully dubbed them Weejuns, introducing the world’s first penny loafer. From strolling across college campuses to doing the moonwalk, ‘Weejuns’ have been found on industrious feet eversince.

Priced at £125, the loafers are available exclusively at Huntergather’s Redchurch Street store in Shoreditch.

Huntergather, 19 - 29 Redchurch Street, London, E2 7D

Will Fashion change the world? Can fashion heal the world? As much as we don’t be shallow or over pretentious about it, fashion plays an important part in our everyday lives. Believe it or not whether you chose to follow a current trend or not that in itself is a fashion statement. With fashion influencing so much of our being, will it change the world for the better? So much time is spent analysing and considering trends, about as much time that is spent on Government policies. Fashion speaks to people on so many levels and in different ways. An outfit can effect a decision. First impressions count they say, first impressions include your outfit, first impressions create marriages, families and careers. We know fashion directs culture. We see it on our televisions every day, the Kardashians have told us not to trust anyone with bad eyebrows. What we eat, watch and where we sleep is based on fashion. Musicians, sports stars and even politicians know fashion forms an integral part of what is acceptable to society so they have to cater accordingly. In the past we have seen those from the fashion industry advising Government officials, you may also recall when Castro agreed to meet with Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell whilst they were out in Havana for a shoot. With all of the above taken into account, when will fashion finally end world wars, poverty, austerity and injustices? Are we being naïve in thinking that fashion can change the world when it’s only purposes is to adorn trends and hold them up as something to be profited from?

THE BOOTYLICIOUS DIET Can you handle it? Several people were disappointed when the only big news Beyonce had to announce was her Vegan Diet which helps her stay in shape. Others were intrigued, so what is the business with the vegan diet? The honest truth is, it is hard to maintain a vegan diet, let alone start it when you have been when meat is part of your staple diet. Vegan diet will not only help you with weight lose, there are so many other health perks that come with it. A vegan diet is rich in fibre and fibre alone does wonders to your body. Fibre cleanses your body getting rid of toxins that affect your well-being. This means meat lovers; we will have to cut anything that comes from an animal that includes eggs, milk and cheesy pizzas. Why don’t you try some of these dishes to kick off your new way of living? Vegetable Shepherd’s Pie Prep time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 50-60 minutes Time from start to eating: 40 minutes Makes enough for 6 large servings.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup lentils, cooked 6 medium potatoes, mashed 1 tsp olive oil 1 yellow onion, diced 2 carrots, diced 1 Tbsp fresh thyme, minced (or 2 tsps dried) 1-2 Tbsp red or white wine pinch black pepper 1-2 tsp sea salt 2 Tbsp whole grain flour ½ cup water

DIRECTIONS Start by cooking the lentils. Put them in a pot with 2-3 cups of water, bring to a boil and then turn down to simmer for 20-30 minutes, .until the lentils are soft Cut the potatoes into small chunks, put in a pot and fill with water until the potatoes are covered. Add a pinch of sea salt, bring to a boil, and cook until the potatoes are soft, about 20-30 minutes. Once they are cooked, pour off the excess cooking liquid leaving about ½ cup in the pot. If you pour the liquid off into a bowl, you may want to add some .back Mash or blend the potatoes until smooth, adding liquid if necessary. If you want a

really creamy potato, you can add rice or nut milk and coconut oil, but I don't find this .necessary. Add salt to taste Transfer the lentils to a pie or baking dish, then heat the pot again to medium. Saute the onions in the olive oil until they soften, then add the carrots and allow them to soften. Season the vegetables with the thyme, then add the wine and stir. Put the vegetables into the dish with the lentils, add salt, pepper, flour and stir to combine well. Add the water .and stir once more to dissolve the flour Top the lentils with the mashed potatoes and put in the oven to bake at 350 degrees for 2030 minutes, or until the potatoes are starting to brown on top and you have completed your .vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie recipe

TUSCAN WHITE BEAN PIZZA Makes 1 (12-inch) pizza.

Stir in the water until combined, then use your hands to knead it .into a soft dough Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead until it is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes, adding additional flour as needed so it doesn’t stick. Shape the dough into a smooth ball and place in an oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature in a warm spot until .doubled in volume, about 1 hour After the dough has risen, transfer it to a lightly floured work surface, punch it down, and gently stretch and lift it to make a 12inch round about 1/4 inch thick. Transfer the round to a floured baking sheet or pizza stone. Let the dough rise in a draft-free place

for 20 minutes. Adjust the over rack to the bottommost position of the oven. Preheat .over to 425 degrees F Make the topping: In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Add .the beans, salt, and pepper Mash the beans to break them up, then stir in the water and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is creamy, about 8 minutes. .Stir in the basil and set aside To assemble the pizza, spread the bean mixture evenly on top of the dough round, to within 1/2 inch of the edge. Arrange the tomato slices on top and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bake until the crust is .browned, 12 to 15 minutes. FASHIONPILLS Jhené Aiko is sailing out Jhené Aiko has been on everyone’s lips for a little while now for her music and now she is breaking into the fashion industry. Jhené launched her bohemian-centric clothing line created in partnership with Neff and PacSun, called Soul of Summer. The collection is designed for the chi and petite lass.

$CHOOL Kills according to Rihanna BadGalRiRi ensured she left something to listen to as she took a break for her music career. We hear Rihanna has officially filed an application at the US Patent and Trademarks Office by Rihanna's company, Roraj Trade, LLC, for the brand name, $CHOOL Kills. The company is filed under 'leather products' and 'clothing products and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what the company’s activities will be. We know Rihanna has already had a success within the fashion industry, for example with River Island collaboration and currently as the Creative Director at Puma. We have no doubt $CHOOL Kills will follow suit.

Clueless the Musical Yes you read it here. The script has been adapted for a musical and the director is in place. We are just itching to know who will reprising the characters from the hit teen movie and when ohh when can we go and watch it.

Donatella Versace for Givenchy In a rather unusual fashion Donatella Versace agreed to offer a helping hand to a competing fashion brand. Donatella is featured as the face of Givenchy’s Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection. "I believe in breaking rules. Riccardo Tisci is extremely talented and above all my dear friend. We are family," she said of the campaign.

The Prince of Fashion We knew it wouldn’t be too long before Prince George was gracing fashion magazines as a fashion icon just like his mother. This time it’s those crocs little Georgie was spotted wearing at the polo last month. It is reported sales have gone up for the Baby Crocs which retail at £35.00 for a pair. We know about his mother’s impact on high street stores, now we can’t wait to see what his sister Charlotte does to the fashion market.

LADY GAGA, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS If you are a big fan of Snow White and her adorable seven dwarfs look away now. This will not be the first time that Lady Gaga has caused controversy with her fashion choices. This one, however required less effort, just a t-shirt with what some considered to be inappropriate graphics.

Tyra Banks goes in on fashion industry In a simple Instagram post supermodel Tyra Banks aired out her views to the fashion industry about the pressures placed on models nowadays. "Models have so much pressure today."They have to look good on AND off the set. They have to arrive backstage at fashion shows looking and dressed as if they are already ON a runway. They have to be slimmer than slim. Skinnier than skinny. They have to compete with actresses, recording artists and reality stars for magazine covers and ad campaigns. They have to have tons of followers on social media to book top notch jobs. And they have to do selfies that make them look relatable, but not TOO relatable, because then people may comment that they don't understand, 'Why the heck is THAT girl a friggin' model??!!!!'" You go Tyra!

Should we ditch the skinny jeans? Wear skinny jeans at your own risk. That is the warning that is being sent out to skinny jean consumers after a young woman in Australia recently had to be taken to hospital to be cut out of her skinny jeans. The young lady spent the day completing her house chores in her skinny jeans and during the course of the day she developed a condition called compartment syndrome which causes numbness and nerve damage. As good as they maybe for our figures, perhaps it is time to opt for a safer style of leans.
