The Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 van reduce running costs by thousands of pounds, and cost as little as 2p per mile to run. Both are exempt from road tax and benefit-in-kind tax, emit no CO2 and burn no fossil fuels at all in operation. Plus, both receive government assistance to get them on the road, keeping purchasing costs low. Any fleet operator looking for a way to cut motoring bills and emissions should start with the Nissan electric range. 18

A hundred years ago, electric vehicles outnumbered petrol and diesel cars on the roads. Though oil-power won out over the 20th century, there is much to recommend electric vehicles. Grants and tax-saving opportunities for electric vehicles mean that they can be a cost-effective way to run a fleet, especially for operators in urban areas. Nissan is aiming to make them still more compelling, and the new e-NV200 van is the next phase of a plan that began with the acclaimed LEAF in 2011. The e-NV200 is the all-electric version of Nissan’s new compact van. Research indicated that a third of all vans on the road travel fewer than 80 miles per day, and the 106mile range of the e-NV200 is Nissan’s gambit

for revolutionising urban transport. At its best in built-up areas, where stop-start driving, regenerative braking and instant torque delivery combine to make the e-NV200 more efficient and easy to drive than conventionally-powered alternatives. Payload and cargo space are unaffected by electric drivetrain. The base price is £16,562, although operators can choose to lease the battery for £61 per month to reduce the purchase price to £13,393. Over four years, Nissan calculates that the e-NV200 will save £4,000 in fuel, £575 on servicing and maintenance, and £900 in VED over an equivalent dieselpowered van. In London, by av avoiding the Congestion Charg Charge, the e-NV200 could save almo almost £11,000 over four yyears. 19

ŠKODA Superb Coming soon! The third-generation ŠKODA Superb is only a few months away, and the latest version of the Czech brand’s flagship car is set to take ŠKODA’s ‘value’ image into new terrain. The

large saloon will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s advanced new ‘MQB’ platform and will look a lot like the sharply styled ŠKODA Vision C concept shown in March last year.

It’s going to be larger, lighter, more powerful and more fuelefficient than its predecessors, which sold 700,000 units between them since 2001. But this Superb has a lot to prove: ŠKODA Chairman Dr. Winfried Vahland wants the new Superb to sell that many in its own lifetime.

BBC Top Gear Magazine’s Hatchback of the Year award What does it take for a car to win an award from Top Gear? A race-bred V10 engine or a flamethrower, you might think. But the Citroën C4 Cactus won BBC Top Gear Magazine’s Hatchback of the Year award for 2014 that impressed the judges by doing ‘more with less’. And when you think about it, trying something new and being ambitious is very Top Gear, although we expect Citroën spent longer on the details than the boys from the television might! The judges liked the Cactus’ design philosophy and position as a real alternative to traditional hatchbacks. The elegant use of simple resources and thoughtfulness that went 32

into the design also won over the critics. The lightweight materials and simplified design deliver cost savings for the consumer and represent a different kind of approach to car design. Car Taxation Changes Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only 1 month until the rules surrounding capital write-down allowances for low emissions cars will change. You may miss out on substantial savings if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t act now. What's changing? At present, businesses purchasing a car with CO2 emissions of less than 95g/ km can claim a 100% first year allowance on the cost of the vehicle, which can be set against business profits.

From 1 April 2015 this 100% allowance will only be available for cars with emissions less than 75g/ km, removing many of the currently eligible cars from this benefit. Take advantage of this great tax saving by ordering your vehicle for delivery before the 31st March 2015.

Company car tax in 2015 and beyond. For 2015, cars with CO2 emissions of 1-75g/km qualify for company car tax at 5% (8% for diesels), while those with CO2 emissions of 76-94g/km qualify in the 11% band (14% for diesels). The rate for cars with CO2 emissions of 95-99g/km is 12% (15% for diesels), increasing by 1% for every 5g/km to the maximum of 35%, as shown in the chart to the right. For cars with CO2 emissions of 1-75g/km the threshold remains at 5% until April 2015, when this rate applies to cars with CO2 emissions of 0-50g/ km. Those with CO2 emissions of 51-75g/km will attract a 9% charge (12% for diesels). In April 2016, the 3% tax charge for diesels is abolished so that diesel cars will become subject

to the same level of tax as petrol cars. At the same time the rate for cars emitting 0-50g/ km of CO2 rises to 7%, while the rate for CO2 emissions of 5175g/km rises to 11%. It will be seen that this rule change will result in a reduction in BIK tax liability in 2016/17 for drivers of diesel cars with CO2 emissions of up to 199g/km compared with 2015/16. Looking further ahead, the Budget stated that in 2017/18 there will be a four percentage point differential between the 0-50 and 51-75 g/km CO2 bands and between the 51-75 and 7694 g/km CO2 bands, reducing to a three percentage point differential in 2018/19.

How to calculate company car tax in 2015. The calculation of company car tax liability in 2015 depends on the car’s P11D price and CO2 emissions, and whether or not it is a diesel vehicle. CO2 emissions figures for all cars can be found at the Vehicle Certification Agency at www.dft.gov.uk/vca All diesel cars registered on or after January 1st 2006, are liable to a 3% tax charge.

Example: (To calculate your own costs, simply replace XX with your own figures). In 2015 a Car and model here, with a P11D price of £XX,XXX and CO2 emissions of XXXg/km, will attract a tax charge of XX% of its P11D value. £XX,XXX x XX% gives a taxable value of £X,XXX, equating to yearly tax liability of £XXX (£XX per month) for a XX% tax payer or £X,XXX (£XXX per month) for a XX% tax payer.
