AWARDS FOR APPRENTICE Apprentices make a vital contribution to our business, and many of our long-serving employees started their careers through apprenticeships at Dennis Eagle. As an employer, we recognise the need to support and train this younger generation, many of whom will go on to play leading roles within the industry.

Wish You Were Here!

One such apprentice who looks to have a bright future ahead of him is James Vajda, who works in our paint shop. James joined Dennis Eagle three years ago and has quickly progressed, showing remarkable skills that have proved to be award-winning. Earlier this year he was named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Group Training Association’s apprenticeship awards, beating off stiff competition from over 70 other local contenders. Following this, James went on to win second place in the Institute of the Motor Industry’s national 2015 Skill Auto competition, which aims to find the top new talent within the automotive industry. As a result, he has been invited to participate in the UK final at the Skills Show, which takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 19 – 21 November. There, he will compete against apprentices from other disciplines in a bid to be crowned UK Champion. Terry New, Head of Manufacturing Plants at Dennis Eagle, said: “We’re all very proud of James’s achievements so far, and would like to wish him the best of luck for the final in November.”

NEXT STOP RWM! It’s been a busy few months here at Dennis Eagle and we’ve been out and about at a number of events and exhibitions, including the Southern Municipal Exhibition, APSE, PAWRS, the LAPV Future Fleet Forum and Londonderry Garage. If you haven’t managed to catch up with us yet, there’s still time. We’ll be at RWM at the NEC in Birmingham between 15 & 17 September. If you’re attending, remember to drop by and see us at our stand (5Y120-ZZ12). EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 02 | 2015

Product overview

GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES You told us that there was a greater market need for more flexible and versatile recycling solutions. We took your feedback on board and, as a result, are very proud to announce the latest additions to the Dennis Eagle family: the Olympus Mini and the Olympus Twin Pack Narrow. Both products offer the same features and benefits as their standard-size counterparts, but in a more compact design. As a result, they combine easy operation with exceptional manoeuvrability and adaptability, making them well-suited to any waste collection environment. With a robust design and lightweight rolled steel construction, the Olympus Mini builds on the proven success of our Olympus range, which we launched in 2010. A brand new concept, it brings the market-leading Olympus brand of refuse bodies into the 7.5t – 15t GVW range.

4

EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 02 | 2015

Its practical features include a continuous packing cycle option complete with optical safety barrier, configurable touch-screen display, LED lights and a complete tailgate seal. At just two metres wide, it is available in capacities of six, seven or eight cubic metres and is suitable for bins ranging from 80 to 1,100 litres, providing a versatile solution for smaller spaces. As with the Olympus Mini, the slimline Olympus Twin Pack combines high compaction ratios with exceptional manoeuvrability, helping to maximise payload and making it ideal for use in areas with restricted access. Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director for Dennis Eagle, comments: “Although we already offer a wide range of refuse collection solutions, the feedback from our customers revealed that there was a market demand for more compact versions of our popular Olympus and Olympus Twin Pack products.

LEGISLATION

IMPROVING VEHICLE SAFETY The ‘Eagle-Eyed’ among you will have spotted in the last issue that we are gearing up for the mandatory introduction of Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) technology, which becomes a legal requirement for all vehicles registered from 1 November 2015. However, just in case you missed it, here’s a recap of what this will mean for our products:

AEBS in action Since the last issue of Eagle Eye, we have carried out a live demonstration of the AEBS system at Thatcham Research Centre, a world-renowned facility specialising in vehicle safety technology.

OPTICAL SENSORS The introduction of optical sensors will enable special built-in cameras to distinguish between black and white. This will detect road markings, meaning that if a vehicle moves over a white line above a certain speed without activation of the indicator, an in-cab warning alert will sound. This is designed to prevent vehicles unintentionally straying across lanes, helping to improve safety for all other road users. RADAR SYSTEM A radar system will be incorporated on our vehicles. This will help to detect objects in the road ahead and ensure a safe distance is maintained at all times. If the vehicle gets too close to an object in front without applying the brakes or steering to avoid it, the AEBS will be activated to slow the vehicle down to a safe speed and mitigate the risk of collision. DEVELOPMENTS AT DENNIS EAGLE These features are now available as standard on all Dennis Eagle vehicles registered from November onwards.

England GOING STRONG IN CRAVEN Craven District Council has boosted its fleet with the arrival of four Olympus 14 narrow track vehicles and an Olympus 21 wide. The vehicles have also been fitted with camera systems from Vision Techniques with the aim of monitoring operator performance and safety, reducing any risk to drivers, crews and members of the public.

“We’ve been a customer for a number of years now and our drivers and crews are familiar with the products, so we were keen to talk to Dennis Eagle when the time came for us to purchase new vehicles. However, the final decision when choosing a supplier lay with our procurement team - but fortunately Dennis Eagle delivered on value for money so we are delighted to have placed this latest order with them.”

The Council has a fleet of around 14 refuse collection vehicles, many of which are Dennis Eagle narrow configuration products, as Transport Manager Steve Parkinson explains:

• CRAVEN • NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE • ROSSENDALE • ROCHFORD • RUGBY • OXFORD • EXETER • PLYMOUTH

“Much of the area in which we operate is what you would call ‘out in the sticks’, comprising narrow and winding country lanes. Payload and manoeuvrability are therefore two of our major considerations when it comes to choosing waste and recycling vehicles.

“We’ve been a customer for a number of years now and our drivers and crews are familiar with the products” Transport Manager, Steve Parkinson.

MAXIMISING EFFICIENCY IN ROSSENDALE Ten new replacement vehicles joined the ranks in Rossendale at the start of the year. As well as carrying out residential trade waste collections, the five Olympus 16 and five Olympus 19 mid-lift narrow vehicles are also helping the Borough Council implement an innovative scheme to help keep roads in the area free from litter. Tracy Cuthbertson, Transport Manager for the Council, explains more: “These latest vehicles replaced the existing Dennis Eagle products in VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE Ten new vehicles are heading to North East Derbyshire to assist the District Council with domestic and commercial waste collections. One was delivered earlier in the year, with the remainder to follow this month. Commenting on the decision to choose Dennis Eagle, Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Michael Gordon said: “The company has a well-established reputation and its products are reliable, with a proven track record. As well as taking into consideration the cost-effectiveness of the vehicles over their life cycle, we also consulted with drivers and crews regarding their preferences, and Dennis Eagle came out on top. “The introduction of the vehicles will mean we have a fleet with the latest technologies, including Euro 6 compliant engines and electric bin lifts. This will play an important part in helping us to achieve fuel savings and reduce our CO² emissions, resulting in environmental benefits and longterm cost savings for the Council and our customers.”

our fleet. As a result, our drivers and crews were already familiar with their operation, with the main difference being the new Euro 6 engines. “The operations team is fully committed to making efficiency savings. We operate full day shifts and no time within these set working hours is wasted. The journey to the landfill site can take up to one-anda-half hours, therefore, while the drivers make their way there and back, the crews are dropped off to carry out litter picking duties in and around the Borough. This not only maximises efficiency, it also helps to keep our streets clean and, as far as I am aware, we are one of very few

Councils in the country to operate such a scheme. Through the new Euro 6 engines and re-routing of our collection schedules, we are also now starting to make significant savings on our fuel costs.”

HELPING ROCHFORD RECYCLE With a recycling, reuse and composting rate of 65.47%, Rochford District Council was ranked second in the 2013/14 league tables. However, keen to reduce its landfill contribution even further, it is now among the first users of a new Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility in Basildon. In addition to this, the Council recently placed its first direct order with Dennis Eagle, purchasing 13 vehicles, including 11 Olympus 21 6x2 rear steer wide and two Olympus 10

4x2 narrow track models, which are expected to play an important part in helping Rochford boost its already impressive recycling rate. Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Jo McPherson, comments: “In 2008, we were one of the lowest ranked authorities in Essex when it came to recycling. However, shortly after this we introduced a new recycling scheme, which quickly led to a dramatic turnaround.

Rugby Borough Council has taken delivery of our Elite 6 exdemonstration vehicle, which will be out and about keeping the town’s streets clean and tidy during the Enjoy Rugby Festival. The festival runs from 12 September to 6 November 2015 and is designed to mark this year’s Rugby World Cup while celebrating the town’s heritage as the birthplace of the sport. A dedicated ‘Fanzone’ will be located in the heart of the town throughout the event, with free entry for fans and families. This will feature a big screen with live coverage on match days, as well as playing host to a series of other events and activities throughout the festival.

The biggest bin outside homes in the district is now used for recycling – 240 litres compared with the 180-litre residual waste bin – and this has helped to shift mindsets. These are collected fortnightly,

Wayne Knighton, the Council’s Operations and Business Development Manager, explains more: “We expect to see a significant increase in visitor numbers to the town during our Enjoy Rugby Festival, with around 1,000 people set to visit the ‘Fanzone’ for match days and other planned events.

NEGOTIATING OXFORD’S NARROW STREETS Oxford Direct Services is an in-house department of the City Council responsible for waste collection and recycling across an area of 17.9 square miles. As well as 152,000 residents, the city also has a transient population of 9.1 million per annum, including students and tourists. Educating this sector of the population regarding waste and recycling best practice therefore plays a vital role in helping Oxford maintain its position in the national recycling league table, where it is currently ranked third. As part of an ongoing replacement programme, Oxford Direct Services has taken delivery of 10 new Euro 6 compliant Olympus 19 6x2 rear steer vehicles over recent months. With their narrow configurations,

these are ideally suited to the city’s streets, many of which are extremely tight, with the added challenge of negotiating parked cars on either side. Equipped with cab management systems, the vehicles also give real-time information on rounds – such as missed collections due to residents failing to put their bins out. Ian Bourton, Fleet and Business Services Manager, comments: “Ensuring our refuse collection trucks are capable of negotiating the streets of Oxford without compromising on payload is essential, and this is one of the major reasons we opted for the narrow rear steer models from Dennis Eagle.”

UPGRADING PLYMOUTH’S FLEET Plymouth City Council has entered into a contract with Dennis Eagle for the replacement of 26 of its refuse vehicles. Fourteen Olympus 19 6x2 rear steer narrow models for domestic collections are due for delivery imminently.

ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW IN EXETER Three new Olympus 16 6x2 narrow rear steer vehicles have gone into operation in Exeter. Forming part of the City Council’s 17-strong refuse fleet, they are carrying out a mix of recycling, residual and garden waste collections.

Fleet Manager Haydn Davies comments: “When it came to choosing new vehicles, our purchasing decision was driven largely by value for money. However, Exeter has many narrrow streets which can be difficult to negotiate with larger vehicles. As such, the manoeuvrability offered by the rear steer vehicles put Dennis Eagle firmly in the frame.”

“Plymouth has a large amount of small back lanes that can make the collection process very awkward” Garry Stainer, Fleet and Garage Manager.

Fleet and Garage Manager Garry Stainer says: “The new vehicles will replace a variety of 07 plate models from a mix of manufacturers. A tender was carried out to select a supplier for the latest products and Dennis Eagle won based on the value they offered. “Efficiency is an important consideration for us and, with their Euro 6 engines, we hope the new fleet will offer significantly improved performance in comparison to our existing Euro 4 and Euro 5 vehicles. “In addition, Dennis Eagle was able to provide us with narrow track models. Plymouth has a large amount of small back lanes that can make the collection process very awkward, but as the vehicles are also rear steer, they give a better turning circle, meaning even the tightest of streets are easily accessible.”

NEW SERVICE FOR BLAENAU GWENT Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council is preparing for the introduction of a new collection scheme. This is expected to increase the amount of recycling in line with Welsh Government requirements, which state that 58 per cent of all waste collected should be recycled by March 2016. • Blaenau Gwent • Wrexham • Torfaen

To support the roll-out of the service it has ordered three Olympus 10 4x2 narrow track vehicles. Matthew Stent, Transport Team Leader for the

Council, explains more: “We will be moving from commingled to weekly kerbside recycling, with residents supplied with Trollibocs containers to help with the separation of different waste streams. “We are also implementing a three-weekly refuse collection to encourage people to make full use of the weekly recycling and food waste collection service. The vehicles will be instrumental in helping with the launch of the new scheme. Blaenau Gwent has many areas with lots of tight streets so, for us, having narrow track vehicles is essential.”

REPLACEMENTS FOR TORFAEN AND WREXHAM Six Olympus 14 6x2 narrow vehicles will be heading to the hills and valleys of Torfaen, after the County Borough Council placed the order as part of plans to replace existing vehicles in its 30-strong fleet. Rico Cottrell, Transport Manager for the Council, comments: “Dennis Eagle was successful in meeting the specification requirements outlined in the tender process and we’re looking forward to taking delivery of the vehicles.

Another Welsh authority to take delivery of new replacement models is Wrexham County Borough Council, which has ordered four Olympus 21 6x4 wide vehicles. The Council’s Fleet Manager, Dave Roberts, says: “We currently operate 13 recycling and 13 refuse vehicles. A number of these are Dennis Eagle, so we are familiar with their products. A tender was undertaken through YPO 324 Specialist Vehicle Framework to choose a supplier for this contract and Dennis Eagle won this with the best overall score.”

“Torfaen is a landscape of many contrasts, from its rolling hills and steep valleys to the former industrial areas such as Pontypool, and the nature and diversity of this terrain can sometimes pose challenges for large commercial vehicles. We opted for the narrows as we felt they offered the versatility needed to negotiate the various parts of our county.”

Scotland ON THE FRONTLINE AT THE FRINGE Last month saw over two million people from all around the world flock to Edinburgh for the city’s renowned Festival Fringe. The largest global arts festival, the event takes place for three weeks each August in Scotland’s capital city. The major influx in visitors causes considerable logistical and operational challenges but, with nearly 70 years’ experience, the City of Edinburgh Council is well equipped to deal with these demands.

• Edinburgh

“Waste and recycling is one of many departments that experience an increase in workload during this time, with significantly greater volumes generated than at any other point during the year. However, with our dedicated team and strong fleet – which includes a further 17 Dennis Eagle replacement vehicles – we were able to contribute to the smooth running of the event by keeping the city’s streets clean and tidy.”

Pat Traynor, Fleet Manager at the Council, comments: “This year’s Festival Fringe was another huge success, and not least because of the hard work of the City of Edinburgh Council’s employees.

DEVELOPMENTS IN DUNDEE Following delivery of five new products last year, Dundee City Council has placed a further order for five vehicles to help with a new two-year roll-out of improved and expanded recycling services. The initiative, which was launched in March, is designed to make it easier for all residents, regardless of where they live or what type of property they live in, to recycle more materials, such as food waste, plastics, metals and glass. It also aims to reduce the amount of food waste sent

to landfill, playing an important role in meeting targets set by the Scottish Government. Stewart Dodd, Assistant Fleet Manager, says: “Dundee City Council currently recycles 32 per cent of household waste, but we are hoping to boost this figure significantly through the phased introduction of this new initiative.

NEXT STOP SOUTH LANARKSHIRE Fresh off the production line, an Olympus 19 rear steer narrow vehicle has now arrived safely in South Lanarkshire after the Council placed the order as part of a replacement programme.

“Ensuring our fleet is capable of handling the increase in recycling we expect to deliver is of vital importance, so the latest Dennis Eagle vehicles are a welcome addition.”

INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY WITH FORTRESS After 30 years in the business, Warwick-based Fortress is still family owned and run. The innovative and ethical waste recycling company prides itself on delivering excellent customer service and value for money and is committed to maximising recycling and sustainability. A significant number of Fortress’ 16-strong fleet is made up of Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicles and it has recently ordered four additional Olympus 23 bodies complete with Beta 2 bin lifts, which will be used to serve its expanding customer base, carrying out collections in and around the Midlands.

“We are delighted that CTS has chosen Dennis Eagle for the further investment in its hire fleet” Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director - Dennis Eagle.

Managing Director David Pass comments: “As a company, we have a number of synergies with Dennis Eagle and share many of the same values. We work closely with a number of local businesses and are committed to meeting the needs of our customers in the rapidly changing waste sector. “Having Dennis Eagle’s manufacturing facility virtually here on our doorstep in Warwick is certainly an added advantage, and with our Aldridge depot just minutes from their nearby service centre in the town, we know we can rely on their help and support to keep our fleet in top working order.”

NEW CHASSIS FOR COOPER GROUP UK Municipal vehicle hire, repair and maintenance specialist Cooper Group UK has ordered three new chassis. Two 6x2 mid-lift narrow chassis will be assisting with domestic waste and recycling collections, while a 4x2 narrow vehicle will be dedicated to trade services. Cooper Group UK will be mounting its existing Phoenix 2 bodies to the chassis and the vehicles will be repainted and branded at the company’s Wolverhampton paint shop. Business Development Manager Jonathan Brimble comments: “Our existing Phoenix 2 bodies have served us well and will be fitted to the new chassis, which have been ordered as part of an ongoing replacement programme. INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS AT THE REDI WITH RVS

GRUNDON BOOSTS FLEET

Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) has ordered nine new Olympus bodies with Beta 2 bin lifts as part of the launch of RediTruck, a brand new service proposition which will see the company offer new refuse collection vehicles in addition to the superior quality used and re-manufactured models it has become renowned for.

In addition to six Olympus 21 bodies delivered earlier this year, integrated waste management and environmental solutions supplier Grundon is set to take delivery of a further six Dennis Eagle bodies on DAF chassis, including two supplied via Refuse Vehicle Solutions.

Spencer Law, Managing Director for RVS, says: “Increasingly our customers are coming back to us for aftersales support to help them manage their fleets more cost-efficiently for the long-term. In response we have restructured our business to provide ‘whole lifecycle’ management of refuse vehicles, to optimise their operational longevity from New (RediTruck) and Quality Used to re-manufactured. This way we can help our customers achieve nearly zero downtime. “Our finance packages offer flexible options such as a take back service after four years, where we can either replace the vehicle with a new model or give the vehicle a mid-life value added overhaul, so it will deliver another four to five years of service.” In addition to RediTruck, product support and temporary vehicle cover, RVS is also offering its customers the chance to ‘Try Before You Buy’ on any of its new, quality used or re-manufactured vehicles. If purchased, RVS will refund the rental charge.

ON THE PAPER ROUND WITH BPR GROUP London-based waste management specialist Paper Round, part of BPR Group, has ordered its first ever new Dennis Eagle vehicle, opting for an Olympus 23 with Beta 2 lip lift to assist with commercial collections in and around the capital. The company began life as a Friends of the Earth project in 1988, specifically to provide high quality environmental services to offices in London. Today, it offers a range of waste management services including collection and processing, as well as reporting and the development of strategies for client engagement. William Swan, Director at Paper Round, says: “Our second-hand 52 plate Dennis Eagle recently reached the end of its life so we have now taken delivery of another used vehicle via RVS. However, we also took the decision to invest in a brand new vehicle to help meet the ongoing demand for our services, and opted for the Dennis Eagle body and bin lift due to the lead time and value for money offered by the company.”

Fitted with Beta 2 bin lifts and weighing equipment from VWS, the vehicles will be working from various locations within Grundon’s operating area in the south of England, including Oxford, Banbury and Colnbrook.

Mike Skull, Fleet Engineer at Grundon, comments: “We provide a total waste management service for the reduction, reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal of waste. To support this, we own and operate an extensive fleet of varied and purpose-built vehicles. “We like Dennis Eagle’s products, and they suit our collection needs. As part of the latest order they will be supplying us with two Olympus 11 narrow bodies. These will be fitted to 16 tonne chassis and used on rounds where access is too tight for bigger trucks.”

BIFFA INVESTS IN FLEET Biffa has invested significantly in a number of new Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicles as part of an ongoing programme to refresh its industrial and commercial fleet. The latest consignment includes 54 complete vehicles, as well as an additional 16 Olympus bodies mounted on Volvo Chassis. The order follows significant growth for the company, as Category Manager Will Gallagher explains: “In recent years, much of the expansion of our fleet has been attributed to acquisitions. However, more recently we have invested in refreshing the industrial and commercial fleet, with a new infrastructure strategy providing long-term financial stability to help us grow and develop further.

“Investing significantly in our fleet allows us to support the demand for our expertise and services, and this vehicle replacement programme will support our market-leading position by enabling us to offer the very best service to our customers. “Dennis Eagle has been a key strategic partner for many years, offering an industry-leading product in terms of quality and efficiency. Most recently we have looked to develop the brand image, making use of interchangeable graphics and vinyl wraps which can be seen promoting our new Biffa OneCall Service, which provides access to a range of rapid response waste services.”

URBASER WINS BURNLEY CONTRACT Following the re-tendering of Burnley Borough Council’s waste collection contract, Urbaser has successfully won the bid to undertake this service. The contract launched on 1 June and will run for eight years, with an option to extend for a further two years. To support the service, Urbaser has taken delivery of seven new Dennis Eagle vehicles supplied via contract hire specialist Gulliver’s, including four 50/50 split Olympus Twin Packs and three narrow track vehicles. Mark Pigott, Business Development Manager for Urbaser, comments: “This contract win represents an important step towards Urbaser’s continued growth and success in the UK. The previous fleet operating in this area was Dennis Eagle, so we are pleased to say that the company’s vehicles will remain a familiar sight in and around Burnley. “We selected Gulliver’s to supply the vehicles based on the value and expertise they offer. They will also be carrying out workshop services, so the fact they have a depot in nearby Manchester was an added advantage.” Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director for Dennis Eagle, says: “It is just four years since Urbaser won its first contract in the UK and, since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, so we are pleased to be working with the team to help with the delivery of services in Burnley.”

NEW VEHICLES FOR SERCO’S BEXLEY FLEET Thirty one vehicles have been supplied for Serco’s Environmental Services contract in the London Borough of Bexley over the last three months to update the existing eleven-year old refuse and recycling fleet. The vehicles include a mix of Olympus, Olympus Twin Pack and Duo bodies and have been fitted with Fuel Saver Packs to assist with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. To support the delivery of these new rear steer vehicles, Dennis Eagle also provided driver and crew familiarisation and ‘train the trainer’ training. Serco’s contract with Bexley, valued at £10.5 million per annum, commenced in November 2009 and was awarded for a ten-and-a-half year term with an option to extend for a further five years. Phil Quelch, National Fleet and Plant Manager at Serco, said: “The Bexley fleet is the first in London to be fitted with DennisConnect, a telematics system which enables faults to be diagnosed remotely and information such as mileage capture to be recorded automatically. Both the contract and our fleet management team are really looking forward to seeing the operational benefits this innovation will bring.” EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 02 | 2015

GOING PLACES WITH GULLIVER’S

Gulliver’s is a company that’s really going places, with its innovative and bold approach to investment placing it in a prime position to meet market demands and exceed customer expectations. The company’s strategy is proving to be a winning formula, and it has secured a number of significant contracts over recent months as a result. These include the supply of seven new vehicles for Urbaser Burnley, and 15 for Biffa Waste Services for use within the group. In addition to the above orders, Gulliver’s has placed a further order for 30 Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicles of varying body types. All will be fitted with the new DennisConnect telematics system, further bolstering the company’s existing nationwide fleet. Sales Director Neil Jeremiah says: “Refuse collection vehicles are evolving all the time and, whether it’s a 22

one-off spot hire or a long-term fleet arrangement, we’re keen to ensure our customers have access to the very latest products and technologies. “However, in keeping with our ethos it’s equally important that the vehicles are reliable and offer value for money. We know we can trust Dennis Eagle to deliver on all these points, so we have once again selected the company to help us fulfil our commitments on these latest orders and support the future growth of our business.” Dennis Eagle’s Sales and Marketing Director Richard Taylor adds: “Gulliver’s forward-thinking, customerfocused attitude has made it a force to be reckoned with when it comes to vehicle hire. We’ve worked with the company for many years and are proud to support them as a supplier.”

FLYING THE FLAG AT TRASH UK Business is booming for Evesham-based hire and maintenance company Trash UK, which is bolstering its 65-strong fleet with the addition of six new refuse collection vehicles. Founded in 1999 by Chris Wood and Kirk Bahra, both of whom previously worked at Dennis Eagle, Trash UK now has a team of 14 staff and a wide private and public sector customer base stretching from Cornwall in the south to Scotland in the north.

Director Chris Wood comments: “These are exciting times for Trash UK as we continue to grow and expand. Much of our success comes down to our reputation for delivering exceptional customer service and sound workmanship. Having the best and most reliable vehicles to back this up is essential, so Dennis Eagle was a logical choice when placing our latest order.”

Staying true to its roots, the company has once again selected Dennis Eagle as a key supplier, with three vehicles being delivered later this year and an additional three to follow in early 2016. In keeping with the brand’s corporate identity, the distinctive vehicles will feature red cabs, blue hoppers and white bodies wrapped with an eyecatching Union Jack design.

CONTINUED INVESTMENT AT RIVERSIDE Following the delivery of 25 new Dennis Eagle vehicles at the start of the year, Riverside Truck Rental is continuing to invest in its refuse collection fleet, placing orders for a further eighteen vehicles. Due for delivery from October, the new products will help the company to meet the increased demand for refuse collection vehicles it is experiencing as a result of continued growth in the sector. Commercial Director Russell Markstein comments: “A significant proportion of our growth and success is down to the fact we have a thorough understanding of local

authority operations. We know the demands that will be placed on vehicles out in the field and can therefore anticipate the features and benefits our customers will look for to help them meet the challenges they face on a dayto-day basis. “Significant investments continue to be made into our fleet and this, in turn, is resulting in increased rental and contract hire demand. We selected Dennis Eagle for this latest order as the vehicles tick many boxes when it comes to meeting the top requirements of our customers, which include quality, reliability and efficiency.”

GOOD INNINGS CONTINUE IN AUSTRALIA While this summer’s cricket Test Match series has proved to be a source of friendly rivalry between England and Australia, it certainly hasn’t dampened spirits in terms of the ongoing relationship with our colleagues ‘down under’. Penske Commercial Vehicles, which is responsible for the Dennis Eagle brand in Australia and New Zealand, continues to place orders based on strong demand for the product line in both countries. This includes a number of Olympus 23 and Olympus 21 vehicles, as well as 4.85m and 5.35m wheelbase dual control chassis. In addition, a further development vehicle is destined for New Zealand that will be the first factory-built rear steer model Dennis Eagle has supplied to the country. Andy Graves, Product Marketing Manager for Dennis Eagle, comments: “We’ve forged a strong relationship with our colleagues in Australia over the

past six years. The country shares many similarities with the UK in terms of the way its local authorities operate, so we are well-placed when it comes to understanding market requirements. “One of the major differences with regard to the vehicles we supply to Australia is the dual-steer function. The majority of recycling and waste collection in residential areas is carried out by side-loading vehicles with one operator, so the dual steering columns make it easier for drivers to perform both tasks while they are out on the road.” Mark Gobessi, General Manager for Dennis Eagle Australia, adds: “Our relationship with Dennis Eagle UK was formed in 2009 when, through the Transpacific Commercial Vehicle Group, we decided to trial the vehicles. They have proved to be a popular choice and the company’s presence in the market has grown further under the leadership of Penske Commercial Vehicles.”

EXPORT

EXPANDING OUR PRESENCE IN THE NETHERLANDS Based in Eindhoven, Van Happen Containers is a rapidly expanding family business that offers a range of services including recycling and waste collection, as well as vehicle sales, hire, repair and maintenance. It has been a loyal export customer since 2006 and now has over 45 Dennis Eagle bodies equipped with both industrial bin lifts and underground collection systems, making it one of the largest European users of our Phoenix 2 and Olympus bodies outside the UK. The latest order includes two bodies fitted with Terberg TGV bin lifts and three equipped with Van Happen Semicon underground collection systems. Director Arno Van Happen, comments: “We choose Dennis Eagle bodies because we are confident in the quality of the product and have a good relationship with the team in the UK. They are able to supply bodies fitted with the type of equipment we need for industrial and underground waste and recycling collections, and we know that this will always be backed-up by good customer service.”

ENGINEERING FIRST FOR POLAND Two specially engineered Olympus Twin Packs were delivered to Terberg Matec in Poland earlier this year for the collection of waste and recycling from communal buildings. Poland is a new market for Dennis Eagle and, with just one power take-off and no subframe, the vehicles posed a number of technical challenges, representing engineering firsts for Dennis Eagle. Marek Biencyzk, Aftersales Manager for Terberg Matec Poland, says: “Recycling rates are growing rapidly in Poland, and as we work towards the EU 26

EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 02 | 2015

target of recycling 50 per cent of waste by 2020, there is a demand for more specialist vehicles to help achieve this. “The Twin Packs from Dennis Eagle enable customers to collect different waste streams separately. By doing so, they are able to facilitate greater domestic recycling rates and command a higher value from the materials they collect.”

SUPPLY CHAIN

A COOL CUSTOMER FOR GRAYSON THERMAL SYSTEMS Birmingham-based cooling, heating and air-conditioning products specialist Grayson Thermal Systems has been building and nurturing a strong relationship with Dennis Eagle for the past 15 years, supplying specialist engine cooling products. We spoke to Managing Director Stuart Hateley to find out more about the company and the key to its success: “We’ve come a long way since 1978 when our Chairman, Graham Hateley, opened a car radiator repair business from a small unit in Hay Mills, Birmingham. Today, we are a family-run business employing over 200 people across two continents. “We have a strong reputation for quality and innovation, and pride ourselves on working

in close partnership with our customers to develop and supply solutions to address specific business issues. In 2000, Dennis Eagle approached us with a requirement for engine cooling systems to help its vehicles meet Euro 3 emissions standards and, since then, we have become a strategic supplier. “The reliability of our products means we are able to provide Dennis Eagle with quality assurance, while the proximity of our manufacturing site to the company’s Warwick headquarters and the local support we can therefore offer is also an important factor behind the success of our relationship. “When Dennis Eagle started developing engines to meet the latest Euro 6 standards, we worked in close partnership to

help overcome the challenges this presented. “With the Euro 6 engine being larger than its Euro 5 predecessor, it had a higher thermal demand requiring a bigger engine cooling product. However, the space Dennis Eagle had available was no larger than that of a Euro 5 cooling system so we worked together to develop a bespoke system to address this issue and meet their specific requirements. “We regard Dennis Eagle as a key customer that has played a vital role in the development of our business. Working with them on projects such as the Euro 6 engine has enabled us to improve our process and efficiency, which we have been able to utilise with other customers as a result.”

future FUTURE fleet FLEET

FUTURE FLEET Fleet and Transport Managers are under constant pressure to deliver the best value, with fewer resources than ever. Earlier this year, LAPV magazine’s Future Fleet Forum brought together public and private sector organisations to debate the main challenges facing the industry, ranging from procurement strategies and technology to compliance and safety. Here, we examine some of the issues discussed:

Law at the University of Hull, said: “Previously the public and private sector did not talk to each other before procurement started, but now these new directives and guidelines are creating space for conversations. This will help buyers and sellers understand each other better and be on the same page right from the start. Private sector can now speak to the public sector to see what they’re expected to deliver.”

Procurement strategies

Driving efficiency

At an earlier round-table debate hosted by LAPV in 2013, participants expressed a common belief that many public sector organisations kept their ways of working under ‘cloak and dagger’ for political reasons.

Austerity measures are still a big issue and it is clear that manufacturers are now under increasing pressure to demonstrate added value and long-term savings to potential customers before purchasing decisions are made.

As such, it was felt that the lack of a unified strategy for public sector fleet management was making procurement increasingly difficult, with a lack of information shared between local authorities regarding best practices. However, the introduction of new rules governing public procurement came into force earlier this year and, with further measures due to be implemented from 2016, this is expected to lead to greater transparency. Commenting on the changes in his keynote address, Chris Bovis, Professor of Business

28

CMS SupaTrak Managing Director Jason Airey and Geoff Rigg, Dennis Eagle Aftermarket Director, shared some tips on how vehicle telematics can help to reduce fuel consumption and improve driver behaviour, minimising environmental impact and leading to lower long-term maintenance costs. Jason said: “Typically, the challenges involved in successful fleet management are addressed through the implementation of multiple systems, tools and technologies which, more often than not, fail to talk to each other.

future fleet

CHALLENGES This results in a lack of system integration and inefficiencies when gathering data from individual OEM and aftermarket equipment. “Our connected fleet solution collects data from all the vehicle systems and uses a single web portal to review this information. This data can then be forwarded onto other business systems – such as DennisConnect - if necessary.”

Safety concerns While HGVs represent less than four per cent of London’s road miles, around 55 per cent of cycling fatalities between 2008 and 2013 involved HGVs. Safety, therefore, remains an important priority and Hannah White, Transport for London Project Manager, talked about Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety (CLOCS) and the Fleet Operators Recognition Scheme (FORS) – both now to be adopted nationally. In another side to the safety debate, the issue of fraudulent accident claims also came under scrutiny, with Jason Airey explaining the role vehicle tracking systems can play in helping to reduce these. He said: “According to UK insurance companies, in 2014 there was a staggering £1.9 billion of fraudulent claims which could not be contested, mainly due to lack of evidence.

“Our combined video and telematics crash reconstruction system delivers real-time information to incident management centres, sometimes referred to by insurance companies as ‘first notification of loss centres’ – FNOL for short. Using this real-time information, the centre is able to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to help mitigate the risk of false claims.”

Future Fleet Forum 2016 Commenting on the success of the inaugural Future Fleet Forum, Ann-Marie Knegt, Editor of LAPV magazine, says: “The event was designed to bridge the gap between public sector buyers and private sector suppliers. Top-level speakers provided delegates with some interesting food for thought, providing a platform for lively discussion around many key issues faced by the municipal vehicle sector. “By promoting innovative thinking it is hoped the debate will act as a catalyst to help improve industry standards. The next Future Fleet Forum, which takes place on 29 June 2016, will provide an interesting opportunity to revisit many of these issues and see what steps have been taken to address them.”

GOING ROUND IN CIRCLES?

THE GREAT RECYCLING DEBATE With the EU considering the introduction of a 70 per cent recycling rate by 2030, it is clear that significant changes to the way the UK – and Europe – tackles waste will be required. Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director at Dennis Eagle, explains more: “According to the latest figures, the UK recycled 43.5 per cent of household waste in 2013, meaning there is still work to be done in order to hit the legally binding EU target of 50 per cent by 2020. “As I write this, a consultation on the functioning of EU waste markets, including issues such as potential distortion within these markets, is drawing to a close. The findings will contribute to an ongoing study examining obstacles and regulatory failures affecting recycling rates across Europe, and will also have a bearing on the revised Circular Economy strategy, which the European Commission aims to unveil later this year. “The original plans set out a 70 per cent recycling and re-use target for municipal solid waste, as well as a requirement for EU member states to recycle 80 per cent of packaging waste, by 2030. However, in December 2014 the European Commission announced it was to scrap these proposals in favour of a ‘broader and more ambitious’ waste package. “At this stage, it is not known exactly what this will entail, but I believe there needs to be a careful balance between zero waste ambitions and real-life practicalities.

30

EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 02 | 2015

“While some countries, such as Sweden, are edging ever-closer towards achieving zero waste to landfill, the targets included in the original proposals still represent a considerable challenge for many member states. Factor in places such as Croatia and Romania, where recycling is still in its infancy, and it is clear that there is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to tackling the issue of waste across Europe. “The need to be more sustainable and adopt a circular economy model to maximise our available resources is greater than ever. However, if the bar is set too high there is a danger that unrealistic targets could lead to well-intentioned plans being jeopardised. It is therefore hoped that the revised EU proposals will contain workable and achievable targets that take into consideration regional variations for the greater good of Europe as a whole.”

IN PROFILE

TERRY NEW: HEAD OF MANUFACTURING PLANTS are the best money can buy. I’m very proud of what we do and feel there’s a little piece of me in all the vehicles that leave our factory. Q: Describe a recent project that you are particularly proud of: A: We’ve recently invested £130,000 in a new 2,000m² facility at our Warwick manufacturing site. When we first got the keys to the building it was just an empty warehouse, so we have worked hard transforming this into a facility that is fit for purpose.

Terry New joined Dennis Eagle in 2002 as Production Engineering Manager. He is now Head of Manufacturing Plants. We caught up with him to find out more about what his role entails: Q: What are your main responsibilities as Head of Manufacturing Plants? A: I look after four plants from a manufacturing perspective and head up the production, production engineering, facilities and continuous improvement teams. I’m also responsible for production planning, so when a product goes into the factory, it’s my team’s role to ensure everything runs smoothly at each stage on the production line to guarantee that customers receive their orders on time. Q: What do you enjoy most about working for Dennis Eagle? A: It’s always fantastic if you can work for an industry-leading business. Dennis Eagle is a perfect example – it produces world-class products that 32

The second floor office is dedicated to new product development with the ground floor office responsible for current product enhancement, while a workshop has been created specifically to prepare third party chassis to fit our bodies. The new building brings the relevant production and engineering teams under one roof, enabling them to work closely together to ensure bodies and chassis integrate seamlessly, providing customers with tailored solutions to meet their needs. With further significant investment planned for the facility over the next 12 months, it is an exciting time for the business, and we hope this will place us in an even stronger position to meet future challenges and address the requirements of our customers as the waste industry evolves. Q: When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A: I was very into sport and football is one of my passions, so I dreamt of playing professionally. I used to be a Liverpool fan but now support my home town, Reading. It’s not easy working with so many Aston Villa fans – but at least there are plenty of opportunities for me to give them some stick!

Nigel has a wealth of experience, having worked for a number of well-known names in the commercial vehicle industry. These include JCB, Geesinknorba, Go Plant and Komatsu, where he has undertaken a variety of roles ranging from engineering and service to business development and aftersales.

NEW DEVON DEPOT

Commenting on his new role, Nigel says: “I’m pleased to be part of the team. As well as selling Approved Used vehicles, I’ll be responsible for overseeing customer service in the south of the country, making sure that Dennis Eagle users continue to receive a high standard of aftermarket care.”

The depot will initially be working with South Hams, providing maintenance, MOT and field services for the District Council’s fleet. Going forward, the service will be extended to other customers on the south coast and surrounding regions, providing them with a faster and more responsive service.

Aftermarket Director Geoff Rigg adds: “There are many facets to Nigel’s expertise and I have no doubt that he will be a great asset to Dennis Eagle and our customers in the south.”

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve opened a new depot in Devon. Based in South Hams district, the new facility will be headed-up by our new Area Manager, Darrell Tinson. Darrell has a wealth of experience in the sector, having previously worked for the Somerset Waste Partnership and Gulliver’s.

Aftermarket Director Geoff Rigg comments: “It has been some time since we have had a maintenance facility in this region, with our Merthyr Tydfil site being the nearest location for many of our customers in this part of the south. However, our presence in this area has grown significantly over recent years, so this new depot represents an exciting development and means customers in this part of the country will have easier and more convenient access to our aftermarket services going forward.”

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY With many depots across the UK, we’re keen to do as much as we can to support the local community. When we were contacted by Ty Gwyn Newydd Centre, run by Merthyr Council, to request a visit from resident truck enthusiast Anthony Rees, we were therefore more than happy to oblige. Forty-seven-year-old Anthony has learning disabilities and has been a resident at the centre for around 25 years. He has a keen interest in trucks and dad, Alan, often takes him on trips to visit haulage sites, so when Anthony was offered the chance to visit our Merthyr depot, he couldn’t wait to come along.

Anthony visited the site accompanied by his carer, Tracie Jones. Tracie says: “Trucks are one of Anthony’s passions so he was very happy to see all the refuse collection vehicles at Dennis Eagle. I would like to thank Darwyn Hare, Tony Thomas and all the staff at Dennis Eagle for making this possible. It made Anthony’s day and will certainly be a visit he will remember for a long time to come.”

PEDALLING FOR GOOD CAUSES Five intrepid cyclists, including Dennis Eagle employees Derek Crabtree and Darren Peglar, along with three of their friends, have successfully completed the London to Brighton Bike Ride, raising money for two worthy charities in the process. The event took place on 21 June and, through donations from sponsors, the fundraising team has so far raised a grand total of £1,588.50. This includes £1,101.50 for event organiser the British Heart Foundation and £487 for Warwick-based Myton Hospice.

Commenting on the experience, Derek says: “Twenty seven and a half thousand people took part in the bike ride. The five of us had originally planned to start from Clapham Common at 08.00 but, due to the sheer volume of cyclists taking part, we weren’t able to set off until 09.00. “There were a couple of incidents along the way: one of our pedals dropped off and there was also a minor collision, but this didn’t deter us. We took a well-earned break at Ditchling Beacon, seven miles to the north of Brighton,

before completing the final leg of the journey. “The last four to five miles were mainly downhill so, with the finish line drawing closer, we picked up the pace – even setting off a 30 mile per hour speed enforcement sign! We arrived at Brighton seafront at around 16.30, tired and exhilarated but pleased that we had been able to complete the 54-mile journey in aid of such good causes.”

MARKS FOR DENNIS THE DUSTCART Our ‘Dennis to the Rescue!’ book, produced in conjunction with Skips Educational, has proved to be a hit with children, parents and teachers across Birmingham. As part of our contract to supply vehicles to Birmingham City Council, we funded free copies for every 10-year-old in the city to help educate them regarding the importance of recycling and support the roll-out of the city’s waste collection modernisation programme. Survey data collected from the initial distribution of ‘Dennis to the Rescue!’ to 4,500 households has been independently endorsed by KPMG. This shows that the book has succeeded in engaging children and family members in increasing their rates of recycling.

After reading the book, 96% of respondents said they will recycle more and this is reflected in the Council’s recycling figures, which show an increase of 28% in Birmingham’s Central district, where ‘Dennis to the Rescue!’ has already been issued.

“As part of this, we are inviting supply chain partners and other partners to sponsor batches of the books so we can deliver these to local authorities and help Councils around the country achieve social value and efficiency in their operations.”

Lee Rowland, Sales and Marketing Manager for Dennis Eagle, comments: “The primary objective of the book is to change the recycling behaviour of families through practical parental engagement and interaction with children. The results achieved in Birmingham show that it has the potential to be effective on a larger scale, so we’ve launched a ‘Dennis to the Rescue!’ campaign in a bid to take the book nationwide.

The branding of ‘Dennis to the Rescue’ can be altered to suit any Council’s vehicles or bin colours so, whether you are a local authority interested in receiving the books, or a supplier or partner who would like to join the national campaign, please e-mail lee.rowland@dennis-eagle.co.uk for more details.
