Of course, the big news for Dennis Eagle is the merger of its parent company Ros Roca Environment with Terberg Environmental to form Terberg RosRoca Group Limited. The headquarters of the new company will be based in Warwick, and the merger has positive ramifications for all divisions of the new Group, many of whom have been working in close partnership for many years. Following the merger, there is now a new operational management board, comprising of Directors from both companies, which will be led by Godfried Terberg as Chief Executive. The new UK branding will be prominent on this year’s stand at RWM. Last year we launched the new Olympus Mini and the Olympus Twin Pack Narrow at the exhibition. Both of these products are now in full production, and we are receiving good reviews from our demonstration activity and customers who have taken delivery of new units. Our DennisConnect telematics and diagnostic system also featured at the show, and has proven a great success over the last 12 months, helping us deliver an all-round better level of service and significantly increasing our first-time-fix rates. In early June, we took two Dennis Elite 6 chassis across to the Waste Expo show in Las Vegas, looking for feedback from that market. The results were very positive both from potential customers and dealers who wish to distribute them. As a result, we are now building a number of trial vehicles for customer evaluation in America, and are hopeful our chassis will soon feature on the other side of the Atlantic.

WALSALL

FIRST ‘COMPLETES’ FOR WALSALL

Walsall Council’s first fleet of ‘complete’ Dennis Eagle vehicles, comprising 15 Elite 6 6x2 Olympus 23s, are now fully operational, assisting with household and garden waste, and recycling collections in and around the town. Dennis Edwards, Procurement Officer - Operations at the Council, says: “It has been a long time since we have had any Dennis Eagle vehicles in our fleet, but value and reliability were two of the main reasons behind our decision to place our latest order with them.

“The company’s Aldridge Service Centre will be providing assistance with maintenance and servicing and is just 15 minutes down the road, so we know that help is close at hand should we require it. The chassis, bodies and bin lifts are also covered by a full three year warranty, providing additional peace of mind to help us keep the fleet in top working order.”

NORTH DEVON

LOW ENTRY HITS THE MARK IN NORTH DEVON

The new vehicles ready to hit the roads of North Devon.

Dennis Eagle’s low entry, single step cab is proving to be a popular choice with crews in North Devon after the Council took delivery of five Elite 6 6x2 Olympus 19 mid lift narrow vehicles earlier this year.

However, if drivers are helping with loading it means they are continually climbing in and out of the cab, so the lower entry cabs are better from a health and safety perspective as they will result in reduced impact on knees and backs.

The majority of the authority’s 18-strong refuse fleet now comprises Dennis Eagle vehicles, after the latest consignment replaced older competitor models.

“A significant proportion of our district is rural, with hundreds of miles of lanes and B-roads. We also cover around six larger towns, where the main challenge is negotiating streets with cars parked on both sides. The manoeuvrability of the narrow vehicles therefore offers a versatile solution, enabling us to access all areas with relative ease.”

Service Manager Paul Burton comments: “Compared to the Dennis Eagle cabs, our previous models were higher entry. This wasn’t so much of an issue for the other crew members, who spend most of their time out on the streets.

BOURNEMOUTH

TWO FOR ONE IN BOURNEMOUTH

Carrying out refuse collection duties along the promenade.

Bournemouth Borough Council has recently unveiled its new super-safe, super-sized refuse vehicle – a 32 tonne Olympus 27 – which will perform the same number of rounds as previously carried out by two vehicles.

“The safety of the public, and our staff, is a high priority. The vehicle will be working in public areas and during the evening so we have made sure it is highly visible and equipped with the best safety devices.”

The Olympus 27 will form part of the Council’s refuse collection fleet, which consists almost entirely of Dennis Eagle products.

Melvyn Davies, Regional Sales Manager at Dennis Eagle, says: “We’ve worked with Bournemouth Council for a number of years and are delighted to have been chosen as the supplier for this latest order. As well as our new DennisConnect telematics system, the vehicle also features a Euro 6 compliant engine, which will to lead to reduced CO₂ emissions for the Council.”

Equipped with a Terberg OmniTRADE bin lift, the vehicle is also fitted with cutting edge technology, including the Cyclear™ cyclist safety system, RX4 hard disc recording, reversing radars and LED light boards from Innovative Safety Systems. In addition, it also includes ISS’ latest product Reaclear (International Patent Pending), a device designed to eliminate accidents caused by reversing manoeuvres. Paul Hancock, Principal Fleet Engineering and Depot Services Manager for the Council, comments: “The increased capacity of this vehicle will enable us to improve the efficiency of our service and save costs by completing the equivalent of two rounds without having to go back and forth to the tip.

FCC ENVIRONMENT WINS CONTRACT EXTENSIONS

Harborough’s new fleet.

FCC Environment has been awarded contract extensions by Harborough District Council and Herefordshire Council, with both local authorities opting to renew existing seven-year arrangements with the recycling and waste management company until 2023.

“Our existing Harborough fleet had reached the end of its lifecycle. However, when we evaluated the vehicle bodies in our Hereford fleet we felt that they were still in good condition, so it made sense to have these refurbished by Dennis Eagle.

As a result, FCC Environment has invested in a number of new and refurbished Dennis Eagle vehicles to assist with the provision of services across both areas.

“By doing so, it is estimated that we have extended the lifespan of the bodies by around seven years. We are pleased with the result, and the products have been finished to such a high standard that one of our team members was unable to distinguish between the new and refurbished bodies when placed alongside each other.”

Thirteen brand new vehicles have been deployed to Harborough as part of an entire fleet replacement. These include a mix of Olympus 27 8x4, Olympus 21 6x2 and Olympus 10 4x2 narrow, all with Elite 6 chassis and a combination of Terberg OmniDEL and Beta 2 bin lifts. FCC Environment has also ordered one new complete vehicle and twelve Elite 6 chassis fitted with refurbished bodies for Herefordshire. Around half of the vehicles are already in service, with the remainder due for delivery over the coming months. David Simpson, Head of Fleet and Plant for FCC Environment, says: “We have a strong relationship with Dennis Eagle and their products make up the majority of our fleet across the country. We were already operating Dennis Eagle refuse fleets for both Councils, so these latest orders provide us with continuity, as well as benefits such as the low entry cab.

WATCH OUT, THERE’S A WASTEATER ABOUT! Members of the public are being encouraged to look out for Biffa’s new fleet of Dennis Eagle WASTEATER vehicles in their area and tweet a photo to @biffa using the hashtag #wasteater if they spot them.

Guy Maddock, Head of Marketing at Biffa, comments: “The reaction to the trucks so far has been phenomenal and they have already been causing a great deal of excitement with the public.

A dedicated spotter’s website containing profiles of all the Wasteaters and clues about where they can be seen has been launched at www.wasteater.co.uk, and Biffa has also enlisted the help of celebrity environmentalist Bill Oddie to help launch the project.

“At Biffa we are very proud of the new fleet. As well as bringing some fun to our waste collections, the new trucks have been built to industry-leading specification, ensuring they remain unrivalled on UK roads and provide a great service too.”

Bill said: “I’m proud to be supporting Biffa on this fantastic campaign, designed to capture imagination and spread enthusiasm across the nation for recycling.

Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director at Dennis Eagle, adds: “This is a truly innovative and well-executed campaign. We have never seen anything like it before, and the way in which it injects personality into the vehicles and uses social media as a platform to engage and educate ‘Wasteater spotters’ on the importance of recycling is fantastic.”

“The new trucks are wonderful and are sure to be a big hit. Waste can be perceived as a dry subject for lots of us in our day-to-day life, so a great idea like this which makes waste collections and recycling fun will be enjoyed by everyone.” Far from ordinary, the 15 Olympus 23 6x2 rear steer wide and Olympus 19 rear steer narrow models with Beta 2 trade bin lifts are dubbed ‘The Wasteaters’ and have even been given their own names and personalities. Walter, Wanda, Willy, Winston, Wendy, Woody and Wilma will serve different cities across the country and each feature unique eye-catching monster paint jobs, with fearsome jaws appearing to eat the waste as it is loaded into their giant bodies.

STROUD

UBICO KICKS OFF STROUD CONTRACT WITH NEW FLEET

Ubico marks the launch of its new contract with Stroud.

Cheltenham-based environmental services provider Ubico has invested in a brand new fleet of 12 Dennis Eagle vehicles to fulfil its new contract with Stroud District Council. Featuring a variety of 6x4 and 4x2 configurations ranging in size from Olympus 23 to Olympus 10 bodies, the vehicles are fitted with Terberg bin lifts. These include the Terberg Triple, as well as the Terberg OmniDel Xtra 50/50, which is fitted to the first Olympus 13 to be manufactured with a Twin Pack body. Stroud District Council became a shareholder in the business earlier in the year, when Ubico started collecting garden waste for the authority. All of Stroud’s waste and recycling has subsequently now transferred over to Ubico.

8

All staff employed by the previous service provider have also transferred across to Ubico and continue to work on the contract as they had prior to the transfer. As a result, Ubico’s staff numbers have increased to around 450, with a projected turnover now in excess of £25-million by 2017/18. Mark Hulbert, Fleet Manager for Ubico, comments: “The roll-out of the new fleet went extremely smoothly. The ordering process was straightforward and I have been really impressed by the level of service and support received from Dennis Eagle. Everyone I have dealt with in the team has been professional and knowledgeable, so we are pleased to have placed this latest order with the company.”

a number of other elements such as value and efficiency – this was an important factor which led to us choosing the company to help us fulfil our replacement programme.”

Dennis Eagle was initially awarded the contract to supply vehicles following a competitive tender and has since supplied three additional replacements after winning a further bid. Delivered in April, the latest order included one 4x2 Olympus 10 narrow and two 6x4 Olympus 20s. All featuring Elite 6 chassis and Terberg bin lifts, the vehicles will be used for domestic, garden and trade waste collections across the city. Sarah Wood, Operational Services Manager for Worcester City Council, comments: “When we carried out the initial tender exercise we were keen to make sure that the drivers and crews were involved. “The teams played an active role in using and evaluating the demonstration models, and their views were taken into consideration as part of the scoring process. BIRMINGHAM

ALTERNATIVE WEDDING CARRIAGE FOR BIRMINGHAM BRIDE

Newlyweds Paul and Hilli Fletcher.

While many traditionally choose horse-drawn carriages or classic cars, one Birmingham bride opted for an alternative form of wedding transport recently in the form of a Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicle. Hilli Fletcher surprised husband-to-be Paul, who works for Birmingham City Council’s waste services team, by turning up to the ceremony in the 26 tonne vehicle. Chauffeured by one of Paul’s colleagues, it was decked out with ribbons and a giant banner reading: ‘Here comes the bride!’ to mark the special occasion.

Hilli said: “The boys from the yard got it ready and my florist kitted it out with ribbons, bows and banners. I told Paul I was going to arrive in a Bentley as I wanted to throw him off the scent. He was crying his eyes out so I must have done a good job. The lorry was a real highlight of the day. I can’t thank the Council enough – it was a real privilege.” Paul added: “I was absolutely gobsmacked and speechless. When I go back to work on Monday I’ll be thanking everyone involved – I’m still quite taken aback by it all!”

DENBIGHSHIRE

DENNIS EAGLE WINS NEW TENDER IN DENBIGHSHIRE Following the delivery of two 6x2 Olympus 21 rear steer models in April, Dennis Eagle has recently won a further tender to supply an additional six vehicles to Denbighshire County Council.

operate the vehicles. In any case, it’s always good to refresh the team’s knowledge.

These include three 6x2 Olympus 14 mid lift narrows, two 6x4 Olympus 21s and one 4x2 Olympus 10 narrow. Fleet Manager Chris Brown comments: “We’ve had Dennis Eagle vehicles for quite some time now, taking delivery of the first batch around 2003.

“We have a mix of different sized vehicles, and the range Dennis Eagle offers helps us to manage the various challenges posed by the rural and urban areas in which we operate, as well as the size of rounds we cover. These two latest orders will replace older models in our fleet – mainly ones which, at between seven and 10 years old, have reached the end of their lifecycle.

“From a fleet perspective, maintaining this continuity has a number of benefits: our mechanics are used to the vehicles from a maintenance point of view, and drivers and crews are familiar with their operational functionality. Despite this though, we always make training a requirement as part of any tender. Vehicles change as newer models are launched, and employees can also change, therefore we never make the assumption that everyone knows how to

“However, we do sometimes keep some of our older models back as reserves. Residents want continuity of service and expect to have their refuse and recycling collected on a specific day so, in the event of any issues with vehicles in our operational fleet, hiring is not always viable option for us. Having reserve vehicles to stand in if required therefore ensures we are covered for all eventualities.”

RHONDDA CYNON TAF

SIX NEW COMPLETES FOR RHONDDA CYNON TAFF

Six additional vehicles will now be joining the fleet at Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council is due to take delivery of six new complete vehicles this month. The 4x2 narrow vehicles with Olympus 10 bodies and Terberg OmniDEL bin lifts will join the authority’s 51-strong Dennis Eagle fleet to assist with waste and recycling collections across the region’s villages, towns and valleys.

10

Commenting on the latest order, a spokesperson from the Council said: “Dennis Eagle offers reliable products and efficient service. We’ve always had a good working relationship with the company, and having the Merthyr Tydfil depot close by is a massive benefit. We’re currently trialling DennisConnect on 22 of our vehicles which were delivered in 2014 and liaising with the team at Dennis Eagle to explore how its functionality can be used to help us get the best from these trucks.”

Dennis Eagle’s Merthyr Tydfil depot relocated to its current site in 2013.

Earlier this year, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council took delivery of two new Dennis Eagle vehicles. The Olympus 16 6x2 mid lift narrow and Olympus 10 4x2 narrow, both supplied on Elite 6 chassis and fitted with Terberg bin lifts, went into service in April to replace existing vehicles in the 7-strong fleet. The Council is a long-standing customer, and not without good reason, as Waste Operations Manager Paul Davies explains: “Historically we’ve always had good links with Dennis Eagle – not least because the local Service Centre is right on our doorstep – and this relationship has been built up through many years of working alongside each other. “For 10 years the Dennis Eagle Service Centre was located in the unit next door to our waste management depot, and when it relocated to the unit opposite in 2013 we took the opportunity to expand, taking over the old Service Centre site to develop a new materials recycling facility. “Being in such close proximity to the team at Dennis Eagle means we can easily call upon them should we require service or maintenance assistance, helping us to maximise efficiency and vehicle uptime.”

VEOLIA: WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Veolia Environmental Services was awarded a 25-year contract with West Berkshire Council in 2008 and is targeting a long-term 49 per cent recycling rate as part of a major boost to recycling in the area. To support this aim it has ordered two Olympus 19 narrow vehicles, as well as 11 new One Pass Olympus 16 Twin Packs with four metre recycling pods on Elite 6 rear steer chassis. Facilitating the collection of a number of different waste and recycling streams on one round, the One Pass Olympus Twin Packs help to boost efficiency by reducing the number of collection rounds required.

Meanwhile, the company will also be taking delivery of a total of 37 new vehicles as part of an ongoing agreement with Shropshire County Council. The company is currently almost three years into a 27-year contract with the Council to provide improved waste and recycling services for residents. To be used across various areas of Shropshire, the order is made up of seven complete Dennis Eagle vehicles, as well as a number of product configurations to be supplied on Mercedes Econic chassis, including eight Olympus Twin Pack 22s, three Olympus Twin Pack 27s, and 19 Olympus bodies ranging in size from Olympus 27 to Olympus 13.

BOOSTING THE COMMERCIAL FLEET Veolia Commercial is also flourishing, with organisations of every size, from every sector, choosing to work with the company to facilitate the safe and efficient disposal of their waste. This year to date, it has ordered around 70 Dennis Eagle bodies on a combination of Daf and Mercedes Econic chassis, helping to meet growing demand for its services.

12

Mick Friend, General Sales Manager, for Dennis Eagle, comments: “The tailored approach that Veolia takes in relation to its local authority partnerships is a key contributing factor towards the strength of its relationships, and Shropshire and West Berkshire are just two such examples. In addition, we’re pleased to see the commercial side of the business continuing to thrive and would like to congratulate Veolia on its ongoing success.”

B&M WASTE SERVICES BOOSTS FLEET WITH LOW ENTRY

Providing a national waste management service with locations across the UK and Ireland, B&M Waste Services offers a recycling-led solution to customers’ business trade waste collection requirements. The company has an established heritage dating back over 60 years. It was founded by plumber William Bagnall and builder Gerry Morris, who met when they worked at the Wirrall Gas Board. Bagnall & Morris was incorporated in July 1954, initially focusing on services installing pipes and connecting private houses to gas mains. Over the following years it expanded its offer, and in 1999 B&M Waste Services was incorporated. In 2008, the local business extended its reach, setting up a National Contracts department, and has provided waste management services throughout the whole of the UK ever since.

The company ordered two new Elite 6 6x2 rear steer chassis with Olympus 23 bodies fitted with Terberg OmniTRADE bin lifts earlier this year. One is already in service, while the other will feature on the Totalkare stand at this year’s RWM and will be delivered following the exhibition. Paul Jarmay, Fleet Engineer and Transport Manager at B&M Waste Services, comments: “Health and safety is an important consideration for the company, and the Elite 6 single step cab is low entry, meaning less strain on joints when drivers and crews are climbing in and out of the vehicles.” The company has also ordered two Olympus 27 bodies on Scania 8x2 chassis. Both fitted with vehicle weighing equipment and OmniTRADE bin lifts from Terberg, the vehicles are due for delivery later this month.

PUBLIC SECTOR - SCOTLAND

EDINBURGH

DENNISCONNECT BOOSTS EFFICIENCY IN EDINBURGH Early indications are showing an improvement in fuel consumption for the City of Edinburgh’s refuse fleet, thanks to the introduction of the DennisConnect telematics system. Pat Traynor, Fleet Maintenance Manager at the Council, comments: “The new vehicles are our first Euro 6 compliant models, meeting stringent nitrous oxide and particulate emissions targets, and initial data collected is showing an improvement in fuel consumption across the fleet. Part of this can also be attributed to the use of the DennisConnect telematics system, which is helping us to monitor the activity of our vehicles out in the field and implement improvements and recommendations to enhance productivity and reduce our carbon footprint. The Council is one of Dennis Eagle’s largest customers in Scotland, having refreshed its 57-strong stock of refuse collection vehicles with the addition of 34 new complete Dennis Eagle models, resulting in a fleet that consists almost entirely of Dennis Eagle manufactured products.

“Dennis Eagle’s Falkirk site is our nearest Service Centre, and on the occasions where we have required additional assistance, Mick McLean and his team have been on hand to support us. The fact that DennisConnect helps to identify the parts required without the need for investigative work by engineers contributes to a better first time fix rate, and combined with efficient response times this means that any work needed to the vehicles can be carried out quickly and accurately, helping us to minimise disruption and keep our operations running as smoothly as possible. “We are also utilising the DennisConnect Waste Operator module, which is enabling us to track the activity of our fleet while collections are underway. This allows us to identify any unexplained periods of vehicle inactivity and address these with the drivers. In many cases these can be explained by factors such as heavy traffic but, in instances where improvements to efficiency can be made, DennisConnect is helping us to maximise performance by giving drivers a greater insight into how they operate their vehicles.”

ANGUS

NEW VEHICLES DELIVERED TO ANGUS COUNCIL Four new complete Dennis Eagle vehicles have hit the road in Angus, working from the Council’s main depots in Montrose, Arbroath, Forfar and Carnoustie. Angus placed its first order with Dennis Eagle in 2014, ordering two Olympus 19 6x2 narrow rear steer configurations. Based on the efficiency and performance of these vehicles it placed a further order for two Olympus 19 and two Olympus 21 6x2 on Elite 6 chassis. Operations Manager Paul McPherson comments: “This latest order replaces older models in our fleet. From my perspective, knowing that Dennis Eagle manufactures the complete refuse collection vehicle provides reassurance that the bodies and chassis are specifically designed and engineered. “The new models feature Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) for enhanced safety. In addition, they are the first in our fleet to be fitted with the ‘DennisConnect’ telematics system.”

NORTH LANARKSHIRE

SMOOTH OPERATOR FOR NORTH LANARKSHIRE With a mix of suburbs, towns, villages and rural landscapes, North Lanarkshire poses many different challenges for waste operations, and their waste collection vehicles need to be robust and versatile enough to meet the varying demands of the terrain. Following an open tender earlier this year, the Council took the decision to replace the existing 09 plate Dennis Eagle fleet vehicles with new models, opting for six 6x2 Olympus 21 rear steer wide and two 4x2 Olympus 13 wide configurations, both on Elite 6 chassis and fitted with Terberg OmniDEL standard bin lifts. Graham Johnstone, Transport Manager for the Council, says: “This was a competitive bid process, and Dennis Eagle was selected based on the value and quality they offered. “The initial deployment was smooth and seamless and the vehicles have proved very reliable, with our drivers and crews happy with their performance. As well as being our first Euro 6 compliant vehicles they also feature a number of new technologies including LDW and AEBS.

“The cabs are also fitted with a further security measure in the form of a handbrake warning system, which sounds an alarm if the driver opens the door without putting on the handbrake. Safety for drivers, crews and members of the general public is an important priority and, as a result, we are in the process of getting this feature retrofitted to older vehicles in our fleet. “The Olympus 21s are the first rear steer configurations in our fleet. In the past, our vehicles made many more trips to the landfill site, and its muddy and steep terrain would have rendered rear steer impractical for the task in hand. However, due to the increase in recycling over recent years the majority of our waste is now destined for the materials recycling facility, making the manoeuvrability of the rear steer models a more viable alternative.”

North Lanarkshire’s bright livery will not be hard to spot out on the rounds.

ARDS & NORTH DOWN

TWO NEW TRADE VEHICLES FOR ARDS & NORTH DOWN

The vehicles will be used to assist with trade wate collections.

Situated on the north east coast of County Down, the Borough of Ards and North Down measures 228 square miles in area and is home to a population of 157,000, which is expected to grow to over 163,000 by 2023. The Council, formed in 2015 following the merger of the former Borough Councils of Ards and North Down, has recently taken delivery of two Elite 6 6x2 mid steer wide Olympus replacement vehicles with Terberg OmniDEL bin lifts, which will be used to assist with trade waste collections across the region.

Jeff Shaw, Transport Manager for the Borough Council, says: “Our combined refuse collection fleet now comprises 45 vehicles. Ards was previously operating an entirely Dennis Eagle fleet, and North Down also had a number of the company’s vehicles. As a result, we were familiar with the products and knew they met our required specification. The decision to place this latest order with Dennis Eagle was therefore largely based on our view that they also delivered the best value for money.”

MID ULSTER

REPLACEMENTS ROLL-OUT IN MID ULSTER Five new Dennis Eagle vehicles were rolled-out to Mid Ulster District Council depots earlier this year, where they have hit the roads carrying out domestic waste and dry mixed recycling duties. The Council’s Dungannon depot took delivery of two 6x2 rear steer Olympus 21 wide vehicles, while Magherafelt received two 6x4 Olympus 21 wides, with a further vehicle of the same specification also supplied to Cookstown. Paddy Conlon, Building and Assets Manager for the Council, comments: “Dennis Eagle makes up around three quarters of our refuse fleet. One of the main benefits this offers is the convenience of a single point of contact for parts, repairs and advice. The vehicles are also reliable and dependable, helping us deliver greater efficiency and value for money.” 16

Ready for action in Mid Ulster.

Residents in the District are also benefiting following the launch of a new ‘Bin-ovation’ app. Available to download from the Apple App store or the Google Play store for Android, this provides households with a handy guide to everything they need about local waste and recycling services, including collection dates, notification of timetable changes and tips on how to recycle more.

PAPER ROUND DELIVERS

Paper Round is experiencing growing demand for its services in London and the south east.

Commercial waste management and recycling company Paper Round, part of BPR Group, has ordered its third vehicle from Dennis Eagle. The Olympus 23 with Beta 2 bin lift and weighing equipment from Vehicle Weighing Solutions (VWS) will be used to support an increasing portfolio of clients in and around London and the south east. The company’s mission is to provide an exemplary waste and recycling service which is flexible, reliable and ethical. It offers collections seven days a week, at times to suit its customers, with schemes tailored to their exact business requirements.

William Swan, Director at Paper Round, comments: “Our customers range from offices and facilities management providers to busy restaurants and high street chains. Nothing we collect is sent to landfill and we will collect anything that can be practically recycled. Investment in our fleet is essential to the smooth running of our operations, and the Dennis Eagle vehicles will play an important role in enabling us to service our customers with regular and efficient collections.”

CLOCS

MOVING FORWARD WITH CLOCS

Back in 2014 we reported on our involvement with the Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety (CLOCS) programme. We were invited to take part by Transport for London (TfL) following the publication of the Transport Research Laboratory’s CLOCS report the previous year, which highlighted the need to introduce new safety standards to regulate construction vehicles working in London. We were more than happy to support the project – our expertise in developing large trucks with high-visibility, lowentry cabs for use in urban environments was a major reason behind TfL’s decision to approach us and, when it comes to the safety of vulnerable road users, the issues currently faced by construction vehicles are similar to those we have faced and successfully overcome. The Elite 6: best in class Purpose-built for urban operations, the view from our Elite 6 panoramic cab offers an unparalleled standard of driver visibility and cyclist safety. This was validated last year, when Loughborough Design School produced a report comparing a number of the most popular HGVs in the marketplace to determine how well the driver could see vulnerable road users from a normal seated position. Of all the vehicles that were digitally scanned in a 3D environment, the Elite 6 outperformed each and every one. Narrowed ‘A’ and ‘B’ pillars aid peripheral vision to give an unobscured view and prevent traffic disappearing from sight, while longer windows give enhanced over-the-shoulder visibility at junctions. The driver seating position is also closer to the road, giving drivers a better sense of the vehicle’s proportions and more visibility of cyclists. When cabs are lower, mirrors need less distortion to show surrounding traffic and distances are easier to judge. The reduced height means visibility of cyclists won’t disappear

24

between the door or dash lines and the panoramic, eye-level view from the cab means cyclists and drivers can make eye contact more easily, ensuring they are aware of one another. Introducing the Urban Safety Vehicle range The CLOCS project has continued to gather momentum, seeing developments such as the launch of the Safer Lorry Scheme in September 2015. This legally requires all HGVs over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight driving in London to have side guards and extended view mirrors to protect cyclists and pedestrians. These initiatives have challenged vehicle manufacturers to come up with new HGV specifications to address the important issue of vulnerable road user safety and, as a result, we have developed and launched a new ‘Urban Safety Vehicle’ range aimed specifically at the construction market. With future plans to introduce a number of other body options, the range currently includes a skip-loader fitted to an Elite 6 4x2 chassis and a tipper vehicle featuring a PPG Weightlifter body with Elite 6 8x4 chassis. As well as having all the safety benefits of the Elite 6, the vehicles are also fitted with a number of additional innovative technologies designed to protect vulnerable road users. These include Dawes Highway Safety’s DawesGuard™ and a four-way CCTV camera system with Cyclear® warning display system from Innovative Safety Systems (ISS). Cyclear® helps to protect vulnerable road users by detecting passing cyclists and audibly alerting the driver when the left indicator is activated. A speaker also sounds to let cyclists and vulnerable road users know when the vehicle is turning left as a second tier warning. This is coupled with an intelligent sensor arrangement that detects cyclists and alerts drivers if they are being undertaken and the indicator is not in operation.

CLOCS

Should a cyclist or pedestrian be unfortunate enough to be involved in a collision with a large vehicle, the DawesGuard™, incorporating DropDown® technology, offers a further level of protection, with a pneumatically operated, inflatable and retractable system that creates a barrier between the road surface, vehicle underside and vehicle wheels to prevent the risk of under-run accidents. Lee Rowland, Sales and Marketing Manager for Dennis Eagle, comments: “There has been considerable interest in our Urban Safety Vehicle range, and the first tipper vehicle to roll off the production line has already been purchased by London-based civil engineering company J. B. Riney.

EAGLE EYE ISSUE 1 2016

“It is clear that, in a relatively short space of time, CLOCS and the Safer Lorry Scheme is delivering tangible results in the capital city, setting out a strong case for the implementation of similar initiatives to drive up safety standards in other inner city areas across the UK.” For more information on the Urban Safety Vehicle range or to arrange a demonstration please contact Dennis Eagle on 01926 458 500.

JB RINEY TAKES DELIVERY OF FIRST TIPPER

The tipper vehicle at the City of London’s annual Cart Marking Ceremony.

Based in East London for over 30 years, civil engineering business J.B. Riney has established an enviable reputation based on the reliability and quality of its workmanship. Working on behalf of the City of London, it also operates across a number of wider districts, including Tower Hamlets, Greenwich and Waltham Forest. Earlier this year, the CLOCS champion and Fleet Operator Recognition (FORS) Gold Scheme operator purchased the first tipper body of its kind on a low entry Dennis Eagle chassis. Transport and Vehicle Purchase Manager Barry Parker explains more:

“As a major operator in the capital city and neighbouring boroughs, the safety of cyclists and other road users is an important priority for us. One of our colleagues visited the Dennis Eagle plant and provided input while the tipper vehicle concept was in its infancy. When we saw the finished product at the CLOCS exhibition at ExCeL earlier this year the timing was just right – we were in the market for a new tipper so made the decision to buy it. “The low entry cab with panoramic windows makes it easier for drivers to see cyclists, pedestrians and other road users, helping contribute to the continued safety of our operations in and around London.”

STEPPING UP A GEAR WITH DENNISCONNECT Launched last year, our DennisConnect telematics system is now fitted as standard to every new Dennis Eagle vehicle that leaves the factory. Here, Project Controller Jaz Arak explains more about how the technology is helping customers improve efficiency and maximise vehicle uptime, and looks at the latest developments designed to further enhance its functionality.

“For us internally, this visibility has had a huge impact, not least due to the fact that if an issue does occur we are instantly able to convert the fault code into a list of parts that will be required to repair the vehicle. For our customers, importantly, this means a better first time fix rate and a faster and more responsive service. “We’re currently in discussions with over 30 customers who are looking to start using DennisConnect Waste Operator to directly help manage their fleets. Over 10 trials of the DennisConnect Waste Operator module are currently live. This offers a number of additional features designed to optimise vehicle operation and driver performance, including:

Jaz Arak is Project Controller for DennisConnect .

“In the past, when customers received new vehicles they would often go on to have features such as tracking or fuel saver devices fitted by external companies. However, thanks to the introduction of DennisConnect all this functionality – and more – is now fully integrated, providing a direct connection to us, the manufacturer. “There are now over 1,000 vehicles visible on our DennisConnect system, and it is the responsibility of our service network controllers to continually monitor these. As well as giving us the ability to remotely diagnose faults in real time, it also allows us to identify defect trends, introduce preventative programmes and recommend smarter service and maintenance scheduling.

Full vehicle tracking (Satellite, Raster Map and Google street level views)

Driver behaviour / performance monitoring (highlighting both positive and reckless driving to maximise fuel efficiency and reduce unnecessary wear and tear)

Rounds management (route optimisation and exception handling)

“Based on research carried out with our customers we are also planning the launch of a further upgrade to DennisConnect, which will relate to the broadcasting of new messages via SMS or email. These currently include alerts such as fuel theft, low oil or coolant levels and engine overheating, and we will be introducing additional preventative maintenance notifications including brakepad wear and oil filter replacement, as well as the functionality to set pressures remotely, which can be calendarised. We will also be incorporating seatbelt use monitoring and a panic button, which will connect to a designated customer control centre, helping to keep drivers and crews safe while out on their rounds.”

JONIC ENGINEERING: INNOVATION AND QUALITY SINCE 1966

Jonic Engineering worked closely with Dennis Eagle to develop a new telescopic ejector cylinder.

Birmingham-based hydraulic cylinder manufacturer Jonic Engineering was founded in 1966. Acquired by Managing Director Peter Blakeman in 1978, the company has gone from strength to strength, developing its technical expertise to become a major supplier to blue chip clients through the provision of high quality products and services. It has a long-standing relationship with Dennis Eagle and, over recent years, has worked with the business to develop an innovative new ejector cylinder concept that has delivered substantial savings. We spoke to Peter, who explained more: “As a business we have evolved significantly over the decades. We started out developing high specification, high quality, niche goods before moving towards a more generalised offer. However, the market is extremely competitive and we soon realised that our strength lies in developing more complex, innovative and sophisticated products so, for the past 20 years, this is what we have built our reputation on. “We currently employ over 40 people at our Hay Mills manufacturing facility, and have an extremely

28

knowledgeable and skilled team with a breadth of experience. We began working with Dennis Eagle when it was based at the Saltisford Works site, prior to its move to the Heathcote Industrial Estate in 1985, and have established a strong working relationship during this time. “One of our most recent achievements is the development of a new telescopic ejector cylinder for the company. Cylinders play an essential role in the compaction of waste while vehicles are on the road, as well as enabling materials to be ejected from the body at landfill or recycling sites. “The telescopic cylinder extends the full length of the body, enabling the vehicle to successfully deposit its load. We worked in partnership with the engineering team at Dennis Eagle to develop a new concept of telescopic ejector cylinder. Now patented, this has been successful in delivering cost savings of around 15 per cent to Dennis Eagle and other companies within Terberg RosRoca Group, demonstrating how working in close partnership to develop innovative solutions can bring benefits across the board.”

LEGISLATION

EAGLE EYE ISSUE 1 2016

A ‘STEP C’ IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR EMISSIONS From 1 January 2017, all registrations must be compliant with new Step C legislation, which takes the Euro 6 emissions standard to the next level. We spoke to Simon McCulloch, Technical Sales Support Manager at Dennis Eagle, to find out more: “The introduction of Euro 6 from 31 December 2013 required all engines to meet a reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). This was achieved using a combination of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) technologies. “The most stringent standard of its kind to date, Euro 6 has also been the most effective in reducing regulated emissions. However, it has not been without its challenges, often resulting in increased diesel and AdBlue® consumption and higher maintenance costs.

“Step C is designed to reduce emissions further and also provides the ability to monitor emissions more accurately. This will be achieved by close observation of the air/ fuel ratio with a new sensor (Lambda) and new engine components, allowing the electronics systems to more accurately control the air/fuel/AdBlue® mix. “In addition to meeting the requirement for a further cut of NOx in EGR, with a 300mg/kWh reduction on the previous Step B standard to 1200mg/kWh, Step C will give greater control of the EGR and DPF to provide more accurate reading of the NOx and PM being produced via on-board diagnostics systems. “As well as reduced emissions, this will give tighter control of monitoring. Should any issues arise, these will be flagged up by the on-board diagnostics meaning they can be quickly and easily addressed to ensure vehicles remain compliant.”

IN PROFILE

JON SAYERS: CHIEF ENGINEER What advice would you give to young people considering a career in engineering? To be successful in engineering I think it helps to be passionate about it, with a keen ability for problem-solving and an inquiring mind. Having A-Levels and a relevant degree is important, but to really stand out from the crowd you should consider taking on a project or extra-curricular activities with an engineering bias. From building a model rocket or a kit car to gaining relevant work experience – basically anything that will help to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the subject. I worked on farm machinery, built my own circuit boards, learned to drive tractors, worked to restore classic cars (and much more!), all before university. Can you describe a ‘typical’ working day?

Engineering has always been a passion for Jon Sayers.

Jon Sayers joined Dennis Eagle in 2011 as Chief Engineer. We caught up with him to find out more about what his role entails: What did you do before joining Dennis Eagle? I graduated from Brunel University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Before joining Dennis Eagle I worked in engineering roles for companies including Concentric Group (who sponsored me through my degree), Honeywell Transportation Systems and Sealine International. What first sparked your interest in engineering? I have always had an interest in engineering. Some of my earliest memories are of building or fixing things, building go-karts and buggies and taking everything apart to see how it worked, so I think it was always inevitable that I would choose this career path.

30

No two days are the same. However, problem-solving lies at the heart of everything - whether it’s resolving an issue with a vehicle in the field, trying to overcome a particular design challenge or working out the most efficient way to deliver solutions based on our available time and resources. Solving problems using innovation and initiative while evaluating risks, all to time and cost budgets! What is the most rewarding aspect of your role? It’s very important to me that I continue to grow and develop myself and our team, so seeing them engaged and interested in the work they are carrying out is a big reward. What’s probably most rewarding is when the projects we have worked on together come to fruition and we see the vehicles out and about on the streets. What projects are you currently working on? We’re currently working on a variety of projects designed to make our vehicles safer, especially for vulnerable road users, both from an overall design perspective as well as through reduced emissions and fuel savings. We’ve recently seen the preview of the Urban Safety Vehicle range, and are currently working on a number of other exciting innovations including development of super lightweight, hybrid and electric vehicles, although these won’t see volume production for a few years yet!

ALL-ROUND WINNERS A team of Dennis Eagle employees are celebrating after winning a charity golf tournament which took place earlier this year. The event was held at the Leamington and County Golf Club to raise funds for Facial Palsy UK, the only charity of its kind to support people affected by facial paralysis due to any cause. Well done to team members James Pearl, Steve Twigg, Tom Callaghan and Gary Buswell who claimed victory and donated their £240 winnings back to the charity. Watch the birdie! Dennis Eagle’s winning team.

FROM KENT TO GHENT A 36-strong team of cyclists from the waste and recycling industry made the 150-mile journey from Kent to Ghent as part of a charity bike ride organised by a number of leading industry figures including VWS and CMS SupaTrak Managing Directors Julian Glasspole and Jason Airey, and Vince Dignam, Business Performance and Improvement Manager at the City of London. Dennis Eagle Regional Sales Manager Ben Hoadley was one of those taking part in the challenge, which aimed to raise £20,000 for the riders’ chosen charities. The epic two-anda-half-day journey exceeded all expectations, smashing the target and raising a total of around £40,000. Ben comments: “My chosen charity was Bowel Cancer UK, which I decided to support after a friend’s brother was affected by the condition. His brother is around my age, and seeing how it can happen just like that made me think how cancer can affect any one of us at any time. The journey was good fun, although challenging at times, and I’m pleased to say I raised over £1,200.”
