Following the triggering of Article 50 at the end of March, the wheels are now in motion as the UK negotiates its departure from the European Union. With no state ever having left the EU before, this is unchartered territory and the long-term impact on local government and the waste and recycling sector remains to be seen. The push for improved air quality and safer Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in our cities and towns has driven a sharp increase in enquiries for low- and zero-emission vehicles. We have also seen more focus on the visibility aspects of HGVs in line with the Direct Vision standards. The Dennis Eagle Elite cab currently meets the highest level of those standards and we are working to improve the cab safety features further, while also complying to all the latest incoming crash test regulations. Our recent engineering projects include various types of hybrid and low-emission drivetrains, so we are well-placed to deliver these solutions to our customers in the future. We have always kept an open door for visitors at Warwick. Recent developments in our production facilities and refurbishment of our reception area,

sales office and meeting rooms will hopefully make these visits both more informative and relaxing. We all look forward to meeting you at the Warwick site in the future.

TERBERG ROS ROCA GROUP 1ST YEAR ANNIVERSARY! Earlier this year we celebrated the first anniversary of Terberg Ros Roca Group, which was formed following the merger between Terberg Environmental and Ros Roca Environment. Based at our Warwick head office, the Group is committed to providing innovative solutions for the recycling and waste disposal industry, with a strong emphasis on quality, value and customer service excellence. Since the incorporation of the new Group in February 2016, we have seen a number of exciting developments across the business. As well as the roll-out of new branding and signage across our sites, there has also been significant investment in facilities at our Warwick headquarters. This includes the creation of commercial and Group office space, a dedicated engineering unit, a brand new reception area and new meeting rooms. In addition, the merger has enabled us to build on existing synergies, resulting in some ground-breaking collaboration between companies within the Group. A prime example of this is the partnership between Terberg DTS and Dennis Eagle to develop an ‘Urban Logistic Safety Vehicle’ aimed at the retail industry – please see overleaf for more information on this project. 3

PARTNERING WITH TERBERG DTS TO DEVELOP URBAN LOGISTIC SAFETY VEHICLE In an exciting new development, Dennis Eagle has partnered with Terberg DTS to produce an ‘Urban Logistic Safety Vehicle’. Aimed at the retail industry, the vehicle has an innovative body designed to make deliveries easier and safer in urban environments. The concept model is based on an 18-tonne Elite 6 chassis. The body, supplied by Gray and Adams, is fitted with a Carrier Eco-Drive refrigeration unit and Dhollandia hydraulic lifting equipment, which enables stock to be loaded from the rear and discharged from the side for cross-pavement deliveries on busy town and city streets. Alisdair Couper, Terberg DTS UK Managing Director, comments: “Terberg DTS has a strong track record in developing vehicles for logistical applications, including the transportation of stock around distribution centres and stores worldwide. Customers in the UK include many of the major supermarkets and high street retailers. “Following the merger between our parent company Terberg Environmental and Ros Roca Environment, the partnership with Dennis Eagle to develop a vehicle of this kind seemed like a natural progression, especially due to the company’s involvement in the CLOCS programme and its expertise in manufacturing low-entry, low-emission Euro 6 cabs, proven to offer unparalleled

4

standards of driver visibility and cyclist safety in urban environments. “We have also collaborated closely with a number of other suppliers on this project, including Gray and Adams, Dhollandia and Carrier. The refrigeration unit has low noise levels and is extremely fuel efficient, while the lifting equipment has never been seen before in the UK and is well suited to meeting the challenges of urban deliveries, particularly in cases where unloading must be carried out at the kerbside. “As an additional safety measure, the vehicle is fitted with the Mobileye Shield +™ advanced collision avoidance system. This features a camera system, along with an audio and visual warning system that alerts drivers to the close proximity of vulnerable and difficult to observe road users, including cyclists and pedestrians. “We look forward to taking the concept to market and hope it will play an important role in further improving road safety standards in London, as well as other cities and towns nationwide.”

CITY OF YORK

FIRST NARROW DUOS FOR CITY OF YORK Two 6x2 rear steer Olympus 17 narrow Duos, the first configurations of their kind, are due to be delivered to the City of York. Both on Elite 6 chassis with Terberg bin lifts, the replacement vehicles have been ordered following a Council review into waste and recycling services in the area. Russell Stone, Head of Operations at the Council, says: “Following our review we are in the process

of reorganising our routes and extending our capabilities, meaning we will be able to broaden our recycling collections to areas that previously didn’t have access to this service. The new Dennis Eagle vehicles will enable us to do so without having to allocate additional resources, with the narrow configuration providing easy manoeuvrability in hard-to-access areas, such as tight terraced streets.”

Areas with restricted access prove no obstacle for the narrow vehicle

WAKEFIELD

WAKEFIELD BOLSTERS FLEET Wakefield Council is to bolster its fleet with 26 replacement models. The Elite 6 6x4 Olympus 23 wides with Terberg bin lifts will form part of the local authority’s 50-strong refuse collection fleet, of which 48 are Dennis Eagle

vehicles. Fourteen have already been delivered and deployed for trade waste, recycling services and domestic duties, with the remainder set to follow throughout September.

REDDITCH & BROMSGROVE

REDDITCH & BROMSGROVE STICK WITH DENNIS EAGLE Redditch Borough and Bromsgrove District Councils have taken delivery of six Elite 6 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 19 narrow vehicles. These will be used for domestic waste and recycling collections, and will replace existing models in the 20-strong fleet. 6

Workshop Manager Paul Windsor comments: “Our existing fleet is made up of Dennis Eagle vehicles. These have proved reliable and our teams are familiar with them, which is why we made the decision to place this latest order.”

THE COTSWOLDS

NEW ADDITIONS TO UBICO’S COTSWOLD FLEET Cotswold District Council covers an area of approximately 450 square miles, including 125 parishes and nearly 200 settlements. Within the district there are currently 41,130 domestic properties, with plans to increase this to 45,500 over the next 10 years. Waste and recycling collection in the area is carried out by environmental services provider Ubico, which took delivery of six new Dennis Eagle vehicles earlier this year. All with Elite 6 chassis and Terberg bin lifts, the order included one 4x2 Olympus 10 narrow configuration and five 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 19 models.

James Hargreaves, Workshop Manager at Ubico, says: “When selecting a supplier for this latest order, the consensus was that Dennis Eagle offered a good all-round vehicle. The new models are all in service and their deployment went smoothly.’’

NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME

NEW VEHICLES IN SERVICE AT NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME Twelve new complete vehicles are now up and running in Newcastle-under-Lyme, after the Council selected Dennis Eagle to fulfil a replacement programme for its fleet. The 6x2 rear steer narrow models, all with Elite 6 chassis and Terberg bin lifts, include a mix of Olympus 19 and 16 bodies, and will be used for the collection of domestic, green and trade waste and recycling across the borough. Steve Gee, Transport Manager for the Council, says: “We are pleased with the new vehicles. One of the

reasons for choosing Dennis Eagle was the fact they offered the narrow rear-steer configuration, making access easier in restricted access streets. The company is recognised as one of the market leaders, and the design and engineering of the vehicles reflects this. We also felt they offered good value across the lifecycle of the products, backed up with support from our nearest Service Centre in Aldridge.”

FAREHAM

WELCOMING THE FAREHAM TEAM TO WARWICK Dennis Eagle’s Warwick plant has played host to a visit from Fareham workshop team members, who attended the site to see the vehicles in production and learn more about the manufacturing process. The factory tour was arranged after the Borough Council placed an order for five new 6x2 mid steer Olympus 19 narrow models, all on Elite 6 chassis with Terberg OmniDEKA electric bin lifts. Damian Ayling, Transport Supervisor for the Council, explains more: “The new trucks will replace existing ones in our fleet. We already have 19 Dennis Eagle models,

so drivers, crews and workshop staff are familiar with their operation. This – along with the fact that they offer the products in a narrow configuration – was a major factor behind our purchasing decision. “We have run Dennis Eagle vehicles for a number of years and felt it would be useful and interesting for our workshop team members to see where they are built and view the manufacturing facilities, which is why the visit was arranged.”

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

SCORING A HAT-TRICK WITH THE NOTTINGHAMSHIRE CONSORTIUM Terberg Matec UK, in partnership with Dennis Eagle, has secured a third successive framework agreement with the Nottinghamshire Vehicle Consortium. The arrangement, which commenced in April 2017, sees the bin lift manufacturer partnering with Dennis Eagle to supply complete refuse collection vehicle solutions for a further four year period up to 2021. Now made up of 13 local authorities, the group was formed with the aim of delivering greater efficiency

through the formation of strong partnership agreements with suppliers. Chairman Andrew Kirk comments: “The increasing number of members that now make up the Nottinghamshire Vehicle Consortium is testament to its success over recent years. We started out as a group of eight local authorities and now incorporate 13 councils throughout Nottinghamshire and into Derbyshire, with our group purchasing power helping to deliver significant savings across these areas.

Following a successful trial of one of our demonstration vehicles, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council has ordered 18 new Elite 6 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 19 narrow vehicles with a mix of Terberg bin lifts and Beta 2 lip lifts, which will replace existing models in the Council’s 30-strong fleet.

Councillor Allison Gwynne, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Clean and Green, added: “Waste collection and recycling is one of our most important services. It is a key point of contact with the public and it has to run smoothly.

Group Engineer Mark Ellison comments: “Dennis Eagle is the only supplier who can provide the narrow track vehicles we need. These are vital for negotiating tight terraced streets, and the rear-steer configuration gives a good turning circle.

“Our fleet had become tired and unreliable, with an unacceptable level of breakdowns. The new vehicles will drastically improve this situation, as well as being cheaper to maintain and with much lower emissions.”

by the Borough Council and are managed and maintained as part of a service provided by Ubico. Head of Community Services Peter Tonge comments: “Dennis Eagle was the preferred bidder under our ESPO framework agreement and was also the only supplier that could provide us with the narrow vehicles we required. We’re pleased with the new fleet, which is also playing a part in helping us communicate waste minimisation and recycling messages across the borough.”

COPELAND

ADDITIONAL CAPACITY FOR COPELAND Copeland’s latest consignment of vehicles is helping the Council improve collection capacity, providing it with the opportunity to expand both domestic and commercial waste operations across the borough. Supplied by Essential Fleet Services as part of a lease and maintenance contract, the new vehicles replace existing nine-year-old models in the local authority’s fleet and comprise two 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 19 narrows and two 6x4 Olympus 21 wides on Elite 6 chassis with Terberg OmniDEL (E) electric bin lifts. Janice Carroll, Waste Enforcement Officer for Copeland Borough Council, says: “We have used Dennis Eagle since 2000. The new vehicles have been 10

in service since February and include two like-for-like replacements, along with two narrow rear steer variants which have taken over from older 18-tonne models. “The new narrow vehicles offer more efficient payload capacity than their predecessors. One of these will be dedicated to trade waste services, providing us with an opportunity to grow this side of our offering. “Our drivers and crews like the low entry cabs and the visibility these help to provide. We like the electric bin lifts and now have a full fleet with these, which are noticeably faster and quieter than the traditional hydraulic lifting equipment.”

BARNSLEY BRINGS VEHICLES TO LIFE Three Dennis Eagle vehicles in Barnsley Council’s fleet have been brought to life following a competition for local children to name them. Three of the trucks now display the names ‘Bin Round Town’, ‘Rita the Rubbish Eater’ and ‘Justin Dustbin’, along with artwork designed by the winners. The vehicles have also been a popular feature at local events such as the annual Penistone Show, where visitors have been able to climb on board and see the view from the cab. Each week, the vehicles travel a combined total of more than 3,000 miles, with 90 crew members lifting 81,000 tonnes of household waste and recycling from around 162,000 bins across the region. David Wigfield, Transport Operations Manager for Barnsley Council, says: “With landfill costs rising we’re

keen to encourage householders to recycle as much as possible. The competition was held to help raise awareness about recycling among Barnsley’s younger residents and was well-received, so we hope to run a similar contest with our new replacement vehicles, which will go into service later this year.” The 11 Elite 6 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 19 narrow models with Terberg bin lifts are due to be delivered in August. David continues: “With the integration between the chassis, body and bin lift, Dennis Eagle offers a one-stop solution for our waste and recycling requirements. The vehicles are also specifically designed for the stop-start nature of collection rounds, and our drivers and crews like the low entry cabs and the manoeuvrability of the narrow rear steer chassis.”

LEEDS

LEEDS ON THE RIGHT TRACK Three new narrow track models will be heading to Leeds, helping the City Council enhance the versatility of its fleet by carrying out waste and recycling collections in areas which are more challenging for its standard-sized models.

Terry Pycroft, Head of Fleet Services for the Council, comments: “The ordinary vehicles in our existing fleet often found it difficult to manoeuvre in parts of the city that are harder to access, and the new narrow track configurations will enable us to carry out collections in these areas more quickly and efficiently.” 11

Ivor MacLean at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar says: “The vehicle was ordered as part of a replacement programme and is our first Euro 6 model, as well as the first to feature the DennisConnect telematics system, which is expected to play an important role in keeping it running smoothly and improving fuel efficiency.”

Tom Reid, Waste Services Manager for the Council, says: “The bulk of our fleet comprises narrow Dennis Eagle models, and we now have an increasing number of Euro 6 compliant vehicles with electric bin lifts, helping us to improve environmental performance and efficiency across the board.”

DUNDEE

FIRST OLYMPUS MINI FOR DUNDEE The first Olympus Mini body for Scotland has been delivered to Dundee City Council following a successful trial of Dennis Eagle’s demonstration model, which took place last year. Fraser Crichton, Transport Manager for the Council, explains more:

“With many of the city’s older parts having short pick-ups and narrow streets with limited turning circles, manoeuvrability was a big issue. Although we have a number of larger vehicles in our fleet, these were not ideally suited to tackle the logistical challenges posed by these areas. “For us, the obvious solution was to get a smaller vehicle. CAERPHILLY

CAERPHILLY BOOSTS FOOD AND GREEN WASTE RECYCLING

Nine new Olympus Twin Packs are set to keep Caerphilly County Borough Council on track to exceed the statutory Welsh Government recycling target of 58 per cent. Featuring Elite 6 6x2 chassis, the vehicles hit the roads earlier this year, supported by our Merthyr Tydfil Service Centre, and will play a vital role in diverting waste from landfill. Tony White, Waste Strategy and Operations Manager for the Council, comments: “The Twin Pack bodies have given us an opportunity to separate our food and green

waste collections without the need for additional rounds or manpower. This has also allowed us to achieve more cost-effective waste treatment, with anaerobic digestion providing an environmentally friendly option that enables us to put energy back into the National Grid. “Like most of the other vehicles in our collection fleet the Twin Packs are narrow rear-steer configurations – we cover a lot of narrow streets with terraced houses, so these help us to overcome the usual issues such as double-parked cars and tight turning spots.”

NEW VEHICLE INVESTMENT AT ARDS & NORTH DOWN Ards and North Down Borough Council has invested in eight new replacement vehicles for domestic and green waste collection duties across the region. The Elite 6 6x2 mid steer OIympus 23 wides with Terberg bin lifts replace older models in the fleet, helping the local authority to boost efficiency. Jeff Shaw, Transport Manager for the Council, comments: “We have operated Dennis Eagle vehicles for some time now, and following the merger between Ards and North Down Borough Council two years ago we inherited a number of older models. At over 10 years

old, these were nearing the end of their lifecycle, so the time had come to invest in new, replacement products. “A competitive tender was carried out and Dennis Eagle was the preferred supplier, meeting our specification requirements and providing value for money. We are already familiar with the company’s products, which make up a significant proportion of our fleet, and have been happy with their performance.”

BIFFA TAKES OVER NORTH SOMERSET COLLECTIONS Integrated waste management company Biffa has commenced a seven-year collection contract with North Somerset Council, after a competitive tender in which the company saw off bids from four rival firms. The new arrangement will allow residents to recycle more materials at the kerbside, and includes a garden waste subscription service, with green bins replacing the previous method of bagged collection. To assist with the change, Biffa has taken delivery of 11 Olympus 21 wide bodies with Terberg bin lifts. David Maidman, Operations Director at Biffa, comments: “In the eight weeks prior to the start of the contract on 1 March we delivered over 42,000 green

bins to households across the region. The change to the service meant that bin lifts, as opposed to open backed bodies, were now required and we opted for Dennis Eagle and Terberg as they met our performance and payload criteria, as well as delivering long-term value. “Earlier this year we completed two training weekends for almost 160 staff. This included product familiarisation for drivers and crews, and we very much appreciate the level of service and support provided by both companies during the build and mobilisation process, as this enabled us to ensure a smooth and successful start to the new contract.”

RVS NATIONAL REFUSE CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN Dennis Eagle was proud to sponsor the return of the Refuse Vehicle Solutions (RVS) National Refuse Championships. The charity event took place at Weston-super-Mare seafront on Saturday 10th June, and involved refuse collection crews from across the UK competing in a relay of strength, fitness and endurance, with all proceeds donated to the Alzheimer’s Society. The idea to revive the contest, last held in 1995, came from Managing Director Spencer Law. He comments: “I was talking to some colleagues from my days at Jack Allen, one of the founders of the original event, and we agreed it was a real highlight. I thought it could be a great way to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. The support from people in the industry has been great, and it was a fantastic weekend which drew a big crowd. “We updated the event to move with the times and there was an emphasis on modern day health and safety practices, utilising new technology such as vehicle tracking and the latest safety equipment. We also created an exhibition area, which was used as an opportunity for colleagues, customers and suppliers to get together as well as have a fun day out. Greg Taylor, Managing Director of Essential Fleet Services, comments: “Delivering value and service excellence is at the forefront of everything we do, and our success is based on a combination of customer care, specialist knowledge and competitive pricing. The new additions to our fleet will enable us to meet the increased demand for rental refuse collection vehicles, providing customers with access to the latest Euro 6 compliant vehicles.”

CTS DOUBLES MUNICIPAL VEHICLE HIRE FLEET Gloucestershire-based municipal vehicle hire specialist Collett Transport Services (CTS) – part of contract hire and fleet management company Specialist Fleet Services (SFS) – has almost doubled its municipal vehicle hire fleet in the last 12 months, increasing the total to around 200 vehicles. To support this expansion it has taken delivery of in excess of 30 new Dennis Eagle vehicles, recently ordering a further 20 to bolster its hire fleet over the coming weeks and months.

Bob Sweetland, Managing Director of SFS, said: “In the past 12 months we have practically doubled the CTS fleet and our aim is to continue this rate of expansion during 2017. As well as our short term hire service CTS also has an increasing number of contract hire customers.” Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director at Dennis Eagle, adds: “The hire sector is experiencing considerable demand for its services. CTS is a prime example, with clients seeking flexible short and longer term solutions to meet ongoing fleet requirements. As a partner for the provision of refuse collection vehicles, we are pleased to be able to support CTS in fulfilling this customer demand.’’ 19

WEIR WASTE WINS BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY CONTRACT Weir Waste, one of the largest independently owned commercial waste management and recycling companies in the West Midlands, has added a new Olympus 23 wide with Beta 2 lip lift to its fleet. Purchased through commercial vehicle dealership Midlands Truck and Van, the vehicle was ordered following a contract win with the University of Birmingham, which will see Weir Waste carrying out collections for around 7,500 student residences and the University campus in Edgbaston and Selly Oak.

OLYMPUS PROVES RELIABLE FOR GRUNDON Grundon Waste Management, the UK’s largest family-owned provider of integraged waste management and environmental services, has ordered one Olympus 23 wide and three Dennis Eagle Olympus 21 wide bodies with Beta 2 lip lifts as part of an ongoing replacement programme. Due to be in service next month, the vehicles feature an on-board weighing 20

Managing Director Danny Weir comments: “Waste and recycling collections make up a large part of our business and we currently have around 55 vehicles dedicated to this, operating throughout the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Typical customers include the NHS, the education sector and high street retail clients. We are proud to consistently achieve zero to landfill through our emphasis on waste-to-energy and recycling.”

system and will be used for carrying out trade waste collections for Grundon’s ever-expanding customer base. Group Fleet Engineer Stephen Townsend comments: “The vehicles will be servicing a cross section of customers, ranging from schools to industry. As a supplier, we find Dennis Eagle to be very approachable in terms of meeting our requirements, with a good focus on our vehicle specifics and good attention to detail. “The Olympus has proven to be a reliable body unit, and Dennis Eagle has a strong track record of working with our current third party chassis supplier to ensure a seamless delivery process.”

H&A RECYCLING NEARS ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL

EAGLE EYE ISSUE 1 2017

BAKERS WASTE CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY Founded by Paul Baker, Bakers Waste has established a rapidly growing customer base within Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes and the East Midlands and currently works with over 5,000 companies, including Leicester City Football Club, Donington Park and Leicester Racecourse. It offers a range of services including commercial waste, skip hire, confidential document shredding, clearance and recycling collection for materials such as food, plastic, card and glass.

H&A Recycling operates commercial waste collection services throughout Cornwall and Devon, servicing a range of businesses from hotels, pubs and restaurants to holiday parks. It also manages waste collection for the annual Royal Cornwall Show, and was awarded the contract for St. Austell Brewery earlier this year. The rapidly-growing business purchased its first new Dennis Eagle back in 2006 and currently operates a fleet of 12 refuse collection vehicles, to which it has recently added two new Elite 6 6x2 mid lift Olympus 16 narrow models with Beta lip lifts. Managing Director Allan Holmes comments: “We currently service around 2,800 sites each week, including a significant number of holiday parks. With around 100 bins to collect at each site, our operators are constantly climbing in and out of the cabs, so the low step entry offered by Dennis Eagle is crucial in helping to reduce leg and back strain. Devon and Cornwall also have a lot of narrow lanes and areas that are awkward to access, which makes the narrow configuration an ideal choice.

This year marks Bakers Waste’s 15th anniversary, and the company has recently taken delivery of its first new Olympus 23 wide bodies with Beta lip lifts. Fleet Manager Craig Kimberlin explains more: “We already have a number of Dennis Eagle refurbished bodies and were satisfied with their performance, so decided to invest in four new products for this latest order. “As a company, we are very UK-loyal, and the fact Dennis Eagle is a Midlands business with a local parts and service offering was also a key influencing factor behind our decision. The refuse collection side of our business is growing, and we are winning new contracts every week, so the new products will be a welcome addition. “We have also moved into a brand new head office. The back of this has been converted into a three-bay vehicle maintenance unit, with equipment such as brake testing facilities and shaker plates, so this will help us keep the trucks compliant and in full working order.”

“In addition to offering dry mixed recycling and glass collection, we also send food waste to an anaerobic digestion plant. As a result, we are close to achieving zero waste to landfill, with a 98 per cent diversion rate. This is something we are extremely proud of, and we will be looking to increase this figure further over the coming years.” 21

STEADY EXPANSION AT TRASH UK Vehicle hire and maintenance specialist Trash UK is a loyal Dennis Eagle customer and has a wide base of public and private sector clients spanning the breadth and depth of the UK. Following a further new business win it has taken delivery of two new Elite 6 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 19 narrow models with Terberg bin lifts, which were delivered in February. Director Ryan Price comments: “The vehicles have been sent out to a new client of ours, who is a regular

Dennis Eagle user. The deployment went smoothly, so we are pleased to report another happy customer. “Business is growing steadily and we have recently extended our team with the recruitment of new mechanics and office staff. We also now have around 70 refuse collection vehicles, nearly all of which are Dennis Eagle with Terberg bin lifts, and hope to add more new products later in the year, so anyone interested in our services should contact us at our Evesham head office for further details.”

CLEARAWAY KEEPS IT LOCAL Clearaway provides commercial recycling and waste collection services across Worcestershire, the Black Country and the West Midlands, including Birmingham. The company took the decision to invest in new models last year to support its expansion and begin replacing its current fleet. Since then, it has not looked back, taking delivery of four Dennis Eagle vehicles in 2016, followed by a further two 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 23 wides with Beta bin lifts this year. Director Andy Gibson says: “We’ve experienced growing demand for our services, and the new vehicles have been purchased to support this. Before placing the orders we met with various chassis and body manufacturers and were impressed by Dennis Eagle. We pride ourselves on being a friendly local business offering good customer service and could clearly see 22

that Dennis Eagle shared this ethos, working with a number of local suppliers in the region, which is one of the reasons we decided to buy the products.”

SHORTS GROUP CELEBRATES DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY This year marks a very special anniversary for Shorts Group, as the Berkshire-based company celebrates 60 years in business. Founded in 1957 by the late David Short, ‘Shorts Timber Services’ – as it was originally known – specialised in offering tree clearance for the construction of the M2 and M4 motorways in the 1960s. Fast forward to 2017 and the company has experienced dramatic growth, placing recycling at the heart of everything it does. With two materials recovery facilities, services currently include trade waste collection, food recycling, demolition, skip hire, agricultural contracting, plant hire and road sweeping.

Assisting with commercial waste and recycling duties for the company are three Dennis Eagle vehicles featuring matt grey livery with corporate branding, and aptly named ‘Grey Goose’, ‘Lady Grey’ and ‘Greyhound’. Gary Short, Managing Director at Shorts Group, comments: “Our Dennis Eagle vehicles have now been in service for over a year. We decided to inject a bit of character into the trucks by naming them, and they are now a familiar and easily-recognisable sight on our rounds, helping us to divert customers’ residual waste from landfill for recycling, materials recovery facility processing or waste-to-energy use.”

FURTHER INVESTMENT AT BELL WASTE CONTROL Scunthorpe-based Ellgia Recycling, which acquired the business of Bell Waste Control, offers waste management and recycling services in an area encompassing North Lincolnshire, Humberside and East Yorkshire. In December last year, the company took delivery of the first of two new 6x2 rear-steer Olympus 23 wides on Elite 6 chassis with Beta 2 lip lifts, with the second delivered in April.

General Manager Steve Kent comments: “We had previously run second-hand Dennis Eagle vehicles, but around 18 months ago took the decision to purchase four new models. We particularly like the low entry cab, as well as the reliability they offer, and therefore placed this further order for two new complete vehicles to replace older products in our fleet.”

EXPORT

A LEADING PLAYER ON THE GLOBAL MARKET According to a recent Confederation of British Industry (CBI) survey, British manufacturers are experiencing a boom in exports, with orders rising to a six-year high and optimism about foreign business deals increasing at the fastest rate in over 43 years. Dennis Eagle is a leading example of export success, and since its first shipment of 2M 10 narrow bodies to Norway in 1985 it has continued to extend the reach of the brand overseas, competing against major players

in the global market with a network of distributors covering countries across Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, the Far East, the USA and Australasia. International purchases currently account for around 20 per cent of total sales, and this year alone we’ve already secured orders for over 140 vehicles for overseas customers. This includes in excess of 20 products for Republic of Ireland-based Setanta Vehicle Importers and Munster Vehicle Sales (MVS), destined for clients including AES, Clean Ireland and Wiser Recycling, and over 95 vehicles to Australian distributor Penske for various private sector and local government customers.

MAKING OUR MARK IN THE U.S.A. We are continuing to make headway ‘across the pond’ with the official formation of Dennis Eagle Inc. and the appointment of our first employee. Five pre-production chassis will be going on long-term trial with customers during the second half of this year and include a mix of rear end and sideloader bodies, four of which will be assembled in the U.S.A. In addition we attended the WasteExpo exhibition, which this year took place in New Orleans. We showcased our Elite 6 chassis cab tailored specifically for the U.S. market, ahead of an ‘official’ launch event due to take place early next year.

PVI ELECTRIC VEHICLE FOR FREDERIKSBERG An Olympus 17 wide body with Terberg OmniDEL bin lift and glider chassis – without engine, gearbox or exhaust system – has been supplied to French electric vehicle specialist Power Vehicle Innovation (PVI). The chassis has been converted to accommodate a 175kWh battery pack, motor / generator and semi-automatic gearbox with the vehicle being supplied to Denmark, where it will carry out collection duties in the commune of Frederiksberg. Under Danish legislation, the vehicle can be plated at 27,000 tonnes gross vehicle weight due to zero emissions. The duty cycle is typically two collection rounds per day, each with a payload of up to 9,000 tonnes. 24

The new ‘Euro 6 style’ electric vehicle alongside one of Frederiksberg’s Euro 5 models

With a range of around 80 to 100 kilometres per day the vehicle requires charging every second evening, providing an environmentally friendly solution to meet Frederiksberg’s low-emission zone requirements.

NEW OFFICES AT TERBERG MATEC NETHERLANDS Previously part of Terberg Matec Benelux, Terberg Matec Nederland (TMNL) has been distributing Dennis Eagle Olympus bodies in the region since 2009.

It also has a 1,250 square metre workshop incorporating 250 square metres of warehouse space.

The business in its current format was established in 2012, enabling the company to provide a more bespoke offer to meet the specific requirements of its Dutch customers. Since then it has experienced steady growth, with a customer base incorporating local municipalities, as well as private sector customers specialising in household and commercial waste collection.

Mark Senders, General Manager of TMNL, comments: “The business has continued to prosper over recent years, and one of the reasons behind this is our consultancy-led approach: as well as providing customers with products and technical benefits we also take the time to discuss and understand the wider logistical challenges they are facing, enabling us to provide tailored solutions to meet their individual needs.

To support its ongoing expansion, TMNL has moved into a brand new building. Custom designed and built, the impressive facility – shared with Terberg Techniek – houses a main reception area and office space with service, sales and spare parts departments.

“Our aim for the future is to build on this success, further increasing our market share, and the recent merger between Terberg Environmental and RosRoca Environment places us in a strong position to achieve this.’’

IN PROFILE

NEIL YARNOLD: DEMONSTRATION ENGINEER Neil Yarnold joined Dennis Eagle in 2014 as our Demonstration Engineer. No stranger to early mornings, his role takes him the length and breadth of the country as he assists drivers and crews undertaking trials of our demonstration vehicles. We spoke to him to find out more about what his role involves: What did you do before joining Dennis Eagle? Before joining Dennis Eagle I spent nine years as a Class 1 HGV driver. The last six involved delivering refrigerated goods up to Scotland overnight then finding a quiet lay-by to sleep during the day. What does your role entail? My role at Dennis Eagle involves looking after the company’s fleet of demonstration vehicles, making sure they are kept clean and up to specification. I assist with the delivery of these vehicles and attend trials with various customers to help them get to grips with the products. Can you describe a ‘typical’ working week? I am based at the Aldridge Service Centre and a typical working week starts in the yard on a Monday morning by making sure our demonstration fleet is clean and refuelled ready for action. I will manage the dispatch of any vehicles going out unassisted before making my way to the location where I will be overseeing that week’s trial. I then check in at the customer’s office or garage to answer any questions they may have. Subsequent mornings are spent out on the rounds with drivers and crews to ensure they’re fully conversant with the demo vehicle for familiarisation training, before I make

26

my way back to Aldridge at the end of the week to assist the team with cleaning down and checking the vehicles ready for the next demonstrations.

“I get to meet a wide variety of interesting people from different backgrounds.” What is the most enjoyable aspect of your role…? My job is good fun – it takes me all over the country and I get to meet a wide variety of interesting people from different backgrounds. One of the most enjoyable aspects is seeing the transformation in driver and crew perceptions as they trial the vehicles. Sometimes, particularly if they have been used to operating older trucks, they have preconceived ideas about the vehicles. In many cases they are therefore pleasantly surprised at the comfort and functionality offered by the latest models, and this is rewarding to see. …And what is the most challenging aspect? I am frequently confronted with the mindset that refuse collection vehicles are too large and unwieldy for areas where access is restricted. In reality, people who hold this view have often never operated our narrow track rear steer models, so it is nice to prove them wrong and show how versatile and manoeuvrable the vehicles actually are.

STEEL FABRICATION EXCELLENCE PUTS THOMAS STOREY IN THE FRAME Thomas Storey is one of the largest privately owned suppliers of steel fabricated products in the UK. The Manchester-based company was established in Stockport in the 1930s and became famous as the original manufacturer of the unit construction ‘Bailey Bridge’ system, a product originally used by Allied forces during the Second World War. Today, under new ownership following a buy-out in 2015, the business is thriving. Employing around 130 members of staff, its highly skilled and experienced team has the capability to design, manufacture and finish products to an exceptionally high standard for customers ranging from multi-national OEMs to small start-ups. The company’s relationship with Dennis Eagle spans almost two decades, and its reputation for quality and precision has resulted in the formation of a mutually beneficial partnership, with the most recent project involving the supply of chassis rails. Jo Lynch, Chief Operating Officer, explains more: “Dennis Eagle approached us in September 2016 and asked us to quote for fabricating part of the chassis rail for its refuse collection vehicles. Following this, the scope of the project escalated rapidly, resulting in the outsourcing of Dennis Eagle’s entire chassis rail fabrication to our Manchester site.

“It has been a fantastic collaboration, and we have liaised extremely closely with the team at Dennis Eagle to get the project up and running, taking on board the company’s detailed specification requirements and production idiosyncrasies to ensure a successful partnership right from the start. “The project has delivered benefits on both sides. From Dennis Eagle’s perspective, outsourcing this element of its manufacturing process has created additional space on the shop floor, enabling it to grow and develop other areas of production, and for us it has not only strengthened our relationship with the company but has also helped contribute to our long-term growth and success. “Our team is expanding, and we have recently taken on a number of new employees, including five welders and two HGV drivers, as well as expediting and auditing staff members. Thomas Storey has an established heritage, and it is through partnerships with companies such as Dennis Eagle that we are able to build on this, supporting the local economy while making a positive contribution to the future of UK manufacturing.”

“Production got underway in March, and we currently fabricate, shot-blast, prime and paint an average of 20 units per week for fulfilment to Dennis Eagle’s Warwick site. Stock is provided on a Just-in-time (JIT) basis, so timely production and delivery is essential, and we carry out three deliveries per week to facilitate this.

DIRECT VISION STANDARD DRIVES UP SAFETY CLOCS recently held its sixth conference and exhibition at the ExCel centre in London. The event provided a great opportunity for the new national team to share its vision for CLOCS as a National Standard and for some of its Champions to demonstrate their progress. Hannah White, Freight and Fleet Programme Manager at Transport for London, explains more: This year’s event showcased 26 of the safest and cleanest vehicles available with increased direct driver vision and fitted with the latest technology. This is testament to the amazing amount of work and commitment principal vehicle manufacturers and CLOCS Champion operators have put in to improving the safety and environmental impacts of their work.

28

Despite celebrating the achievements made through the CLOCS programme, the event also highlighted more work is still needed to remove the current and future risk to vulnerable road users. Direct Vision Standard Effective interventions in safety are driven by solid evidence. Extensive research points to the need to improve direct vision from HGV cabs. HGVs designed to work in off-road environments or for long-haul motorway trips and whose basic design has not changed since the 1970s are not suitable for built-up urban environments, where they travel alongside pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. The most prominent additional safety measure is the development of a Direct Vision Standard (or DVS) for HGVs, announced by the Mayor of London last September.

EAGLE EYE ISSUE 1 2017

This first phase of the DVS consultation closed on 18th April. This part of the consultation collected important information in terms of the impacts of the DVS proposals on operators, manufacturers and wider industry. Site Conditions The CLOCS progress event also saw the launch of ‘Site Standards’, a project which AECOM is carrying out as part of the CLOCS research programme. Research has shown that over 70 per cent of fatal collisions with cyclists in the past three years have involved HGVs designed to be driven off-road. Off-road HGVs generally don’t allow safety features, such as under-run protection. Higher axles and elevated cabs create greater blind spots. As a result, these off-road HGV variants pose a greater hazard to vulnerable road users when compared to their non-offroad counterparts. Research has found that vehicle manufacturers and dealers tend to offer off-road specification vehicles by default. Despite this, when surveyed, 49 per cent of operators indicated that off-road conditions were either ‘never’ encountered or were encountered on very few trips. Site Standards will aim to reduce the need for off-road HGVs by providing the standards and framework to evaluate construction, supply and waste sites and provide guidance to improve sites. This will mean operators will be able to identify when the safer on-road HGVS can be used and only use off-road variants when absolutely necessary.

The DVS objectively measures how much a driver can see directly from the HGV cab without using cameras or mirrors. Under the Mayor’s proposals, vehicles with the most limited direct vision – zero star rated vehicles – will not be able to operate in London from 2020 and only HGVs meeting 3 star or above – a ‘good rating’ – would be allowed on London’s roads by 2024. This is the first standard for HGV direct vision to be developed anywhere in the world. It builds on the success of working in partnership with vehicle operators and HGV manufacturers through the CLOCS programme. As Mike Brown, Transport for London’s Commissioner said at the CLOCS event, the DVS proposals are ‘not a done deal’.

CONNECTING WITH KIRKLEES DennisConnect is fitted as standard to every new Dennis Eagle manufactured product, but we haven’t stopped investing in research and development since its launch in 2014. Kirklees Council was an early adopter of the system and has been working in close collaboration with us to help enhance the technology.

“We are also exploring tyre pressure and brake pad wear monitoring, both highly useful features from a financial and safety perspective. As well as ensuring safety through compliance with legislative requirements, such features will help to reduce maintenance costs and make fleet operation more efficient.

We spoke to Mick Farmer, Integrated Transport Manager at Kirklees Council, to learn more about the evolution of DennisConnect and the benefits this will deliver:

“In the case of tyre pressure, optimum levels can help with weight distribution and reduce unnecessary fuel costs, plus there is the added benefit of being alerted immediately to any instances of flat tyres.

“With the ongoing need to increase efficiency and improve safety, telematics are now an integral part of vehicle operation across both the public and private sectors. In the last three to five years, we have seen the technology become more sophisticated, reaching far beyond basic ‘track and trace’ functionality to offer a wide range of enhanced features. “As an original equipment manufacturer, Dennis Eagle is in a prime position to develop a unique offering in this field. There is a real appetite and enthusiasm within the business to do so, so we were keen to partner with the team to explore ways in which to further improve the DennisConnect system. “The beta testing currently underway encompasses safety and compliance, as well as maintenance regimes, to develop a range of enhanced features. We are currently trialling seatbelt monitoring on one of our vehicles. This activates a warning if the vehicles are moving and the seatbelts are not in use, and has proven incredibly effective in influencing driver and crew behaviour.

30

“Brake pad wear monitoring enables us to track wear on the pads and change these before any damage to the brake discs occurs, mitigating additional repair and maintenance costs. As well as the obvious safety benefits, this will allow users to monitor driver behaviour – for instance excessive heavy braking – and address this where necessary to make sure that vehicles are being operated in the most efficient way possible. “All this, combined with alerts such as engine overheating and low oil or coolant levels, as well as remote real-time fault diagnosis, results in an extremely valuable package that can deliver significant returns for fleet or transport managers, helping to streamline operations, reduce unnecessary repair and maintenance costs and improve safety for drivers, crews and other road users.”

NEW ESSEX SERVICE CENTRE At the start of this year we opened a new Service Centre in Essex. Located at 5 Stepfield, Witham, the depot will provide customers in the region with easier access to facilities for all their vehicle repair and maintenance requirements, as well as offering fabrication and refurbishment services. Dave Nicholls, Service Centre Manager at our Aldridge site, is currently responsible for the operational management of the new facility. He comments: “The opening of our Witham Service Centre is a significant development for Dennis Eagle. Many of our customers on the east coast previously relied on support from our Aldridge, Bexley or Croydon sites, so this facility will make a huge difference to them in terms of response times and convenience. “We currently employ a team of five covering fitting, welding and administration roles, with plans to expand in the future. In addition, we’re launching a new Dennis Approved Used service from the site, which will offer quality used parts.” An open day took place at the Witham Service Centre on 5thß April, giving customers an opportunity to view the facilities and meet the team.

IMPROVED STOCK OFFER AT FALKIRK Dennis Eagle’s Falkirk Service Centre has launched a new and improved parts delivery service. As well as enabling the depot to offer a same-day delivery to customers within a two-hour radius, the changes also mean the introduction of a counter service for customers to drop in and collect essential parts if they wish, subject to terms and conditions. Mick McLean, Service Centre Manager, comments: “The new offering is designed to help and support our existing overnight delivery service and provide faster and more reliable access to parts. A lot of our customers are now double-shifting vehicles with the aim of improving efficiency, so we see this as a much better way to support them and help reduce downtime.”

FIRST DENNIS EAGLE & TERBERG MAINTENANCE CONTRACT FOR BRIDGEND A new contract launched at Bridgend on 1st April and sees Dennis Eagle and Terberg joining forces to provide maintenance and servicing for the Council’s fleet of 32 vehicles. The majority of the work will be carried out on site at Bridgend, with support from the Merthyr Tydfil Service Centre. Ian Brown, Regional Service Manager for South Wales, says: “This is the first joint venture of its kind following the merger of Dennis Eagle and Terberg’s parent companies. However, we expect to see increased demand for this type of service package as customers seek a more convenient solution to their aftermarket needs.”

GOODBYE TO ROBIN MERRIMAN We recently said farewell to Commercial Parts Manager Robin Merriman, who retired after 13 years at Dennis Eagle. During this time, Robin has built up the parts desk team, playing a pivotal role in cementing our reputation for exceptional quality and service. HAMBLETON’S CONNECTED FLEET Hambleton District Council is utilising the benefits of DennisConnect, deploying it across the entire fleet to help improve efficiency. Supplied by Specialist Fleet Services (SFS), with maintenance sub-contracted to Dennis Eagle, the fleet includes refuse collection vehicles, as well as StreetScene, pest control and dog warden vans. Sue Seddon, Technical Support Manager for the Council, comments: “Many of our vehicles, particularly pest control and dog warden vans, operate in rural areas with lone workers. From a safety perspective, the tracking functionality of DennisConnect therefore allows us to pinpoint the location of these vehicles at any given time. “We soon realised that this brought with it additional benefits – for instance, when calls come in from members of the public to report issues such as stray dogs or dog fouling we are able to identify the nearest vehicle to the incident. This is resulting in faster response times and an improved public perception of our services. “For our refuse collection vehicles, we are using DennisConnect to monitor aspects such as driving styles, idling times, miles per gallon and fuel efficiency, which is enabling us get the best from our fleet. There are also advantages from an insurance perspective. In the event of any incidents reported involving one of our vehicles we are able to quickly establish the facts, helping to negate any false claims.”

32

Reflecting on his time at the company, Robin says: “I’ve had a fabulous time at Dennis Eagle, it’s a great business to work for, and the teamwork and camaraderie is outstanding. I’m sad to be leaving, but looking forward to retirement and the chance to spend more time with my very understanding wife and our lovely grandchildren.” Taking the reins from Robin will be Jaz Arak in his new position as Central Parts Manager. The team has now been extended with two new appointments, and internal promotions have led to the creation of new UK Sales Controller and Export Controller roles. Geoff Rigg, Aftermarket Director for Dennis Eagle, comments: “We’re very sorry to say goodbye to Robin. He has built a lasting legacy, and we hope to keep up the good work he has done over the years by continuing to take our parts and service offer from strength to strength.”

Installed in the body and cab fabrication areas, the equipment is faster and more efficient than the previous system, providing a reliable and cost-effective solution for welding requirements. 34

Vehicle Systems Manager Alan Gordon explains more: “Our previous equipment was beginning to get quite outdated so we made the decision to invest in an upgrade, installing the Kemppi FastMig M system. It’s faster and more efficient, with an improved duty cycle meaning less power is consumed. It also has a digital display showing optimum settings for different metal gauges, so no energy is wasted. “Thanks to support from Kemppi’s Regional Sales Manager Mike Summers and Steve Evans, Sales Director at supplier IWS Rock, the roll-out of the equipment went extremely smoothly and it has been well-received by our shop floor operatives.”
