Hello & Welcome Hello and welcome to the September edition of Hendy Torque – an overview of all of the exciting things taking place at Hendy. As we are now into the second half of the year, we are looking forward to a number of new model launches from all of our manufacturer partners, as well as a number of developments within the Group. In this edition, we’ll share with you the details of our superb new Car and Van Store facility in Portsmouth, and introduce you to the many new faces that have joined us across the Group. We will also share with you some fantastic news from our Power and Marine divisions.
Yet again, we have many amazing staff achievements to celebrate, including our 25 Club, which welcomed many new members again this year. Refreshed and ready to take on whatever lies ahead, the Ford Transit Custom now has a new outlook thanks to its brand-new grille and LED daytime running lights.
Making its way to Hendy Ford Transit Centre, the new Transit Connect with its updated 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine that has seen a number of upgrades made to the cylinder head, fuel injection and emission control systems – all of which are designed to improve the model’s fuel economy.

Liam Hammett (Sales Controller Tunbridge Wells CV) Liam started with Hendy in February 2018 as a Car Sales Executive. Harbouring a passion for anything with four wheels and a relentless determination to succeed, it wasn't long until he secured the position of Sales Controller within the commercial vehicle operation. When asked about his recent promotion, Liam replied: “With my drive and ambition I hope to take TW CV further and make lots of customers happy, with a positive lasting impression of Hendy." Honda have committed to furthering their presence in the electric car market by vowing to make hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell cars represent two thirds of their European sales by 2025.
Their commitment to electrification stretches further than their innovative development of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles – we will in time also be seeing battery electric play a vital part in their comprehensive range of zero-emission vehicles.
We’ve already seen strides towards this with the CR-V becoming available with a hybrid drivetrain and the Honda Urban EV Concept going into production to be the manufacturer’s first mass-production electric vehicle to be sold in Europe – orders will be open from early next year.
We can’t wait to get our hands on these vehicles and see just how impressive they are with our own eyes. If it’s anything similar to what the manufacturer has recently revealed, they’re not to be missed.

Renault adds new Urban Nav special edition to Clio range. Renault have announced a new addition to the Clio line-up: the Clio Urban Nav. This special-edition model is based on the current Clio Dynamique Nav, but has a few new adaptations, including rear parking sensors, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and a new ‘Urban Grey’ colour. It also comes with two engine options: a 0.9-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, or a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel powertrain, both of which produce 89bhp, however the diesel produces

more torque than its petrol counterpart – 220Nm vs 135Nm. They come with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, although a six-speed dualclutch automatic transmission can be specified for the diesel model at an additional cost. SEAT Tarraco SEAT are expanding their SUV range with the all-new seven-seater Tarraco. This highly anticipated model was named with the help of the public in a competition where they could vote for their favourite option – other name suggestions included Alboran, Aranda and Avila. We expect to see the model equipped with a 150bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine as standard, with the option to upgrade to a 178bhp 2.0-litre version. A 2.0-litre diesel engine will be offered with two power outputs, similar to the respective petrol engines. It will most likely come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard for most models, whilst top-spec variants are expected to be equipped with seven-speed DCT auto gearboxes and four-wheel drive. JOHN O'GROATS TO LAND'S END Using a single tank of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), an IVECO Stralis NP completed the famous 837-mile journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End to demonstrate it as a genuine alternative to its diesel counterparts. Covering the distance with ease across a mix of motorways and A roads, the Stralis NP also showcased its ultra-low emissions, quieter operation and reduced fuel costs, which worked out at around a third lower than diesel models.

The Hendy Group are very pleased to have joined the national Water Refill Scheme – an initiative designed to reduce the amount of plastic water bottles being used by encouraging people to refill their reusable bottle at a number of participating cafés, shops, hotels, businesses and now car dealerships.
In the UK it is estimated that around 800 plastic bottles a minute are either ending up in landfill sites or as litter, which will make its way into the waterways and then into the sea. We want to help reduce this number and do our bit for the environment, preserving it for future generations.
We’ve joined the long list of companies that have already got involved in this ground-breaking scheme, which include Costa Coffee and Premier Inn, both part of Whitbread plc, who have pledged that each of its 3,000 locations will be involved.

TRAINING FOR THE FUTURE
The Hendy Group sponsored the CEMAST Greenpower Challenge project run by the Greenpower Education Trust, a UK-based charity with an outstanding track record in kick-starting a range of careers in engineering. This exciting challenge allowed teams of students aged 9 to 25 from across the globe to compete at Greenpower events held within the UK and other countries, including the USA, Poland and China with the annual international final then taking place at the Rockingham Motor Speedway in the UK. We're very pleased that some of our apprentices, along with other college students, will be developing a car that's able to compete in an endurance-style event. Races will last one hour with participants only being supplied with a 12-volt battery part to keep the vehicle going throughout the duration. As the amount of electrically powered vehicles continues to increase on our roads, there hasn’t been a better time to bring this revolutionary way of thinking to young, inquisitive minds. Although the competition comes with strict rules and regulations, it still allows enough breathing room for creative ideas to prosper. We certainly can’t wait to see what concepts they come up with!

HENDY 2018 AWARDS During the first quarter of 2018, we held our annual Hendy Sales Awards and Hendy Aftersales Awards to celebrate our teams’ hard work during the past year. This also happened to be a record year for the Group, as we sold more than 38,900 vehicles in total across Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Devon. To celebrate this success we put on two fantastic evenings with exciting entertainment from musical sensation Escala and with fantastic hosts – Colin Murray hosted the Sales Awards and Alex Brooker the Aftersales Awards. These evenings were jam-packed with numerous awards being distributed to our hard-working team members, and Chief Executive Paul Hendy also paid tribute to the winners at each ceremony. This year, the prestigious Hall of Fame Award was presented to Richard Reed, who joined the company in 1995 and has been an instrumental part of our success over the years. Reed said: “This is the biggest honour I will ever receive in my life. I have had so much fun working at Hendy and this is just fantastic.”

Other achievements shared on the night went to Steve Dilley and Matthew Bennett from the Hendy Car Store in Exeter, who both sold more than 300 cars last year, and the Portsmouth Used Car team was named Team of the Year. We also awarded Adam Flower from Hendy FordStore in Portsmouth the title of Newcomer of the Year, and Alan Pritchard was named Sales Manager of the Year for all of his fantastic work at our Hendy Kia dealership in Eastleigh. As the year progresses, we are set for even more success with our major investment in nine new facilities and five upgraded showrooms across the South Coast, which is therefore resulting in the recruitment of 279 new employees to the Group, taking our team to over 1,100 members of staff in total. Following on from our spectacular event at Hever Castle in Kent in 2017, this year saw our long-standing team members take a well-deserved day trip to the Isle of Wight, where they were able to experience a delicious buffet lunch and relax in style at the stunning Northwood House. Heading back to Southampton Marina in the afternoon, guests were then greeted and checked into the luxurious five-star Southampton Harbour Hotel and Spa where they had exclusive use of the hotel and facilities, followed by a celebratory award-winning meal accompanied by exciting evening entertainment. SEVERN AREA RESCUE ASSOCIATION ORDERS A NEW LIFEBOAT FOR LIFE-SAVING DUTIES ON THE SEVERN Article written by Severn Area Rescue The Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) has announced the order of a new Lifeboat for its Sharpness Lifeboat Station. The lifeboat will operate on some of the UK’s most challenging tidal waters having the second highest tidal range in the world, bringing with it very high-velocity silt-laden waves capable of damaging the most robust craft. The new lifeboat has been designed specifically to cope with these challenging conditions. The order for the new lifeboat was made possible due to a grant of £110k from the Department of Transport, the largest single grant from this round of grant funding. Our thanks go to Liz and Matt, administrators of the grant, for recognising the vital need for the new lifeboat, additionally to our own Chris Crowley who managed the grant application through to award. The grant will fund 75% of the final cost of the lifeboat. Hendy Marine, based in Swanwick, were selected from a supplier list for the supply of a bespoke design version of the Highfield 760 Aluminium Hull Self Righting RIB.
The RIB will benefit from the fitment of Ullman shockmitigating seating to lessen the impact of the conditions on the crew. An enhanced electronics package including Raymarine “Doppler” radar and FLIR heat-seeking camera systems will further any casualties' chances of successful rescue. Power will be supplied by twin 115hp commercial spec “Command Thrust” heavy duty Mariner outboards fitted with Post Immersion Restart (PIRS), enabling the engines to restart following any inversion of the lifeboat. Specification and supply of the power units was managed by Barrus (Special Products Division) Bicester, manufacturers of the power units. Geoff Dawe, the Sharpness Lifeboat Station Operations Manager, said: “The lifeboat final design has been the culmination of long and far-reaching design work with a team made up of Steve Harrison of Hendy Marine, Ivor Andrews of Vortec Systems and the lifeboat station senior team with freely given professional input from the RNLI." Drawing on the RNLI vast experience saved hugely on design work and vital understanding of unique systems, without which much further design work would have been needed. My personal thanks goes to the RNLI Highfield Brand Manager, Steve Harrison, at Hendy Marine, who said: “This will be the second ILB that Highfield have supplied SARA. We are delighted to be working with Geoff and his team again. This lifeboat has been designed from scratch to cope with the unique demands of the Severn Estuary. Geoff’s input means that it will be a very capable craft, reinforced in vital areas, the bow in particular which has been designed to punch through the steep heavy waves that will be encountered.

"Vortec Systems were engaged to design and build a crew console which will fit seamlessly to the lifeboat hull, ensuring maximum comfort and safety for the crew who will be required to work in very harsh conditions. The lifeboat will be manufactured from heavy-duty specialist materials meaning that the environmental impact has been minimised at every stage of the build. 90% of this lifeboat is recyclable or reusable.
