We’re now well into 2016 and a lot has already happened this year, but we have an even more exciting few months ahead. Here begins a new chapter in the Hendy Group story as we expand further with our recent Lifestyle Motor Group acquisition; we’re looking forward to building a brighter future for the Hendy Group as we broaden our reach across the South Coast. The Lifestyle Motor Group shares the Hendy Group’s values, so we’re excited to be making Hendy history as we integrate and move forward together. On 3rd December 2015, the Hendy Awards took place to reward the year’s success by the teams and individuals across the company. The award for ‘Team of the Year’ went to Ford Commercial Vehicles; ‘Sales Manager of the Year’ was received by David Graham, and Andy Stevenson was added to the Hendy ‘Hall of Fame’ for his dedication to the company.

Rome2Home On 4th October, I finally completed the mammoth cycle ride from Rome to Home… 1,423 miles covered in 14 days, by 20 riders and a fantastic support team.
Each day entailed various stops at coffee and cake shops (burning in the region of 5,000-7,000 calories per day has its benefits!), with occasional cycling on parts of the Tour de France stages.
We flew to Rome and were reacquainted with our bikes (my new best friend for the next two weeks!), and set out early on Saturday 19th September for our first day in the saddle. This was a gentle introduction of what was to come, covering 128 miles in temperatures topping 30°C.
The end was in sight with Cherbourg being our final destination, though only 70 miles away, it was not without a slight sting in the tail! The first 50 miles were covered with the team wearing fancy dress, but some – or rather most – of the outfits were not the most practical for cycling! We then changed attire and rode in to the final stop in a huge peloton of 20, creating some traffic chaos, but by then we didn’t care too much!
Day two was a mere 92 miles, taking us to the beautiful city of Pisa with a promotional photo next to the tower. It wasn’t easy seeking permission from the Italian police, but it was well worth the hassle! Day three was already threatened to be brutal – and it delivered! The Italian mountains were waiting for us and they proved to be very, very tough. We set off early, on what seemed to be the hottest day in history (32°C), with a few long gradients, ramping up to 18% in places. The group of riders I was with took a wrong turn at one point, which made our task even more difficult. After several long climbs (and descents) totalling over 9,000ft, we arrived nearly 9 hours (riding time) later in Genoa. Another 120 miles clocked!
Certainly a challenging experience, all in aid of a very good cause – The Steve Bernard Foundation – and at the latest count, we have raised well in excess of our £20,000 target! If you were one of the many generous people who sponsored me on this trip, I give you my sincere thanks. Steve Hendy.
Day four was a complete contrast, in the ‘effort required’ and took us into France through Monaco, with some stunning coastline through to Fréjus where I was met by some family friends loaded with beer and crisps (heaven?). The next few days took us north through France, clocking around 100 miles on each leg, passing through such places as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lyon and Tours. Some tough headwinds made progress slower than we had hoped, but the various overnight stops were hit – if not on time, at least before it was too late!

Eastleigh 10k Run Hendy Ford has recently become headline sponsor of the Eastleigh 10k – one of the country’s largest and most popular road races. Race organiser Steve Collins said, ‘We are absolutely thrilled that Hendy Ford has agreed to sponsor this fantastic community event.’ Hendy Group Managing Director Paul Hendy is delighted to join forces with one of the most well-established running events in the region: ‘As a group, we are involved in a wide range of events and activities, and the Eastleigh 10k, which starts and finishes within sight of our Leigh Road dealership, fits perfectly in our plans.’
Sunday 20th March 2016 saw the first Hendy-sponsored event take place, attracting more than 2,300 runners; a Mustang Fastback and Ford Kuga sat at the head of the field as the run’s official timing cars. Post-run, Paul Hendy said: ‘Everyone within the company really embraced our support of this event.’ – And they certainly did that, with Group Sales Director Andy Stevenson setting the pace amongst 20 Hendy runners to achieve a finish time of 45 minutes and 27 seconds.

The Blue Lamp Trust The Hendy Group chose The Blue Lamp Trust to receive their first substantial charitable donation of 2016, in the form of a Ford Transit Connect; the fourth donated by the Group to the Hampshire charity in recent years. Assisting The Blue Lamp Trust with its Bobby Scheme, the Ford Transit Connect will transport a specialist fitter to people who have been victims of burglary and domestic violence across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, giving home safety advice and fitting simple systems such as locks, alarms, spy holes and door chains. The Bobby Scheme is a free service that helps those in need, with specialist fitters visiting individuals referred to The Blue Lamp Trust by the police and local agencies. In 2015, Blue Lamp Trust fitters helped to improve the safety of over 2,290 homes, with three Ford Transit Connects from Hendy ensuring efficient and reliable transportation. With four of these vans for 2016, even more of this good work can be done. Chairman of The Blue Lamp Trust, Alan Lovell, commented on the donation, saying: ‘Not only has The Bobby Scheme brought peace of
mind and helped reduce the fear of crime for 10,000 people, but it also has a substantial effect in reducing repeat victimisation. We are hugely grateful to the Hendy Group for donating a fourth Ford Transit Connect. The new vehicle will extend our service and allow us to better access those in need within our communities.’ On 27th January 2016, an official handover event took place in Eastleigh at the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Headquarters, where the Ford Transit Connect was given to the Trust. Mark Busby, New Car Sales and Marketing Director at Hendy Group attended the event, handing the keys to Lindsay Fox, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, in the presence of Andy Marsh, Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary, Councillor Peter Mason and Jim Bettley, General Manager of The Blue Lamp Trust. Representatives of the Making Safe Scheme, Ageas UK and Exxon Mobil Fawley were also in attendance. Mark Busby stated: ‘We are thrilled to be able to assist The Blue Lamp Trust in their invaluable efforts to help victims of crime. The vehicle will provide reliable access to the vulnerable and those who require support after burglaries or domestic violence.’
Hampshire gymnast Kelly Simm is getting a helping hand on the road to Rio thanks to Hendy Honda. Hendy Honda has thrown its support behind the Olympic hopeful by providing Kelly with a brand new car to make getting to training sessions easier. Kelly, 21, is currently aiming for a place in the GB team for the Rio 2016 Olympics. With 15 women competing for just five places in the team, it means Kelly’s weeks are filled with countless training sessions across the country and she says the Honda HR-V from Hendy Honda has already made her journeys a pleasure rather than a chore. ‘The car definitely makes life a lot easier,’ she said. ‘With all the training it is a lot of time on the road! Parley Cricket Parley Cricket Club is one of the largest clubs in the south of England, fielding five adult teams each Saturday in the Dorset Premier and Hampshire Cricket Leagues, plus youth teams from U9 through to U16 and a developing girls and ladies section.
