SENT TO COVENTRY

Dennis Eagle’s Regional Sales Manager Matt Horwell with Streetscene Manager Brian Martin and Integrated Transport Manager Chris Coyle, both from Coventry City Council.

The historic city of Coventry is famed for the exploits of Lady Godiva. Legend has it, this 11th century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman once rode naked on horseback through the streets in protest at the high taxes imposed on residents by her husband. Soon it will be a very different sight gracing the roads in and around Coventry thanks to a new delivery from Dennis Eagle. The order includes seven replacement vehicles featuring Olympus 21W bodies, along with an Olympus 19N body with Elite 2 chassis. The vehicles will be carrying out a mix of trade and domestic waste and recycling collections throughout the city, with the extra flexibility provided by the narrow vehicle helping to increase efficiency. Chris Coyle, Integrated Transport Manager for Coventry City Council, said: “We already have some second-hand and refurbished Dennis Eagle vehicles in our fleet, but this is the first time we have ordered new vehicles directly from them. “They were able to provide a quality product with comprehensive aftercare package that offered real value, and this was a key reason behind our decision to choose Dennis Eagle.” Doug Squires, a past president of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, comments: “I know the relationship will be mutually beneficial between the City Council and a great local company.”

a mix of 65/35 split Olympus Twin Packs and Olympus Duos, all fitted with the Fuel Saver Pack. Phil Quelch at Serco explains more: “The vehicles will help us implement Wycombe and Chiltern’s new collection scheme, as well as reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. This isn’t the first time we’ve had the Fuel Saver Pack fitted, it has previously been specified on vehicles for Wandsworth and Sandwell so we know the potential savings it can deliver. “We had a short lead-in to this contract and everything had to be ready for day one. Dennis Eagle didn’t let us down. As well as offering value and reliability they also gave us a firm commitment that the vehicles would be delivered on time. The contract has started really well as a result, and everything is going smoothly.” Mick Friend, General Sales Manager at Dennis Eagle, comments: “We’ve worked with Serco for many years. They worked with us closely on early trials of our Fuel Saver Pack, and following excellent results committed to specifying it on future vehicle requirements. Serco’s fleet now includes more than 70 vehicles fitted with the Fuel Saver Pack making impressive savings in fuel usage and importantly reducing CO2 emissions. They know they can rely on us to deliver in terms of product quality and service, and we’re pleased that they have partnered with us for this contract with Wycombe and Chiltern.”

A fleet of 38 new Dennis Eagle vehicles is helping Serco boost recycling rates after it was awarded a seven year environmental services contract by Chiltern and Wycombe District Councils. Joining forces to provide environmental services through Serco enabled the councils to make significant joint savings.

Dennis Eagle has also recently supplied Serco with a further 17 65/35 split Olympus Twin Packs. The vehicles were delivered for a 1 April contract start after Serco was re-selected to provide waste, recycling and street cleansing services to Canterbury City Council following a competitive tendering process.

Worth over £7 million per annum, the contract started on 4 March and includes the phased roll-out of new waste collection services across both regions. This will involve a move from commingled to separate food and green waste collections, as well as the collection of a wider range of materials for recycling. Chiltern residents will now be able to recycle cans and plastics, while householders living in Wycombe will be able to recycle glass. In addition, both areas will be able to recycle textiles and batteries for the first time. Helping to facilitate the introduction of recycling and waste collection improvements, Serco’s fleet includes

MOVING ON UP IN THE VALLEYS Dennis Eagle’s Merthyr Tydfil service centre has relocated, enabling it to provide an even more comprehensive service to customers in Wales. Located at Unit 22, Merthyr Tydfil Industrial Park, the new facility is five times larger than the previous site. As a result it now features a VOSA ATF lane and can offer a wide range of services including tachograph calibration, brake testing, LEZ smoke testing and headlight adjustment, as well as vehicle

maintenance and repairs. Service Centre Manager Darwyn Hare comments: “We’ve invested in this facility to enable us to widen our offer to local customers. Our aim over the coming months is to extend this further to include LOLER inspections, air conditioning servicing and steam cleaning.” The depot is planning to hold an open day later this year, giving operators in the region the chance to view the facilities.

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE Earlier this year, Dennis Eagle hosted a visit from a team of Loughborough University students who were completing a project on refuse collection vehicles as part of their course. The third year automotive engineering students had been briefed to produce a concept and design for a niche market vehicle and turned their attention to the refuse collection industry with an electric hybrid truck. Serco’s team at Charnwood had assisted the team in their efforts, providing information regarding duty cycles, payloads and collection processes. They contacted Dennis Eagle to arrange the visit so that the students could see the work involved in manufacturing a refuse collection vehicle firsthand.

Dennis Eagle’s Matt Horwell (centre) with students from Loughborough University.

Student Jamie Knapp is one of the team members working on the project. He comments: “It was really useful being able to ask Dennis Eagle specific questions about the estimated weights of components, line times and costs. Seeing the vehicles up close was a vital experience in our project as it gave us a much better insight into the packing methods used. Seeing how the components interacted with each other allowed us to develop our design with this specialist knowledge.” Matt Horwell from Dennis Eagle says: “When Serco asked if we would be able to host a visit from the students we were more than happy to oblige. These students are the automotive engineers of the future and it was refreshing to see their enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge.”

NEWS

The Eagle lands in Lincs Authorities in Lincolnshire have come together for the first time to jointly procure refuse collection vehicles in association with members of the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership. They have selected Dennis Eagle as the main supplier for refuse collection fleets as part of a contract that runs until April 2017. The collaboration is expected to result in the delivery of more than 100 vehicles over the next four years. Thirty seven have been ordered to date, including seven for Boston, sixteen for East Lindsey, two for West Lindsey, six for South Kesteven and six for the City of York. Carl Miller, Procurement and Contracts Officer for Procurement Lincolnshire, comments: “Many of our

councils already have Dennis Eagle vehicles in their fleets, but this is the first time we have standardised and aggregated our requirements under a common acquisition method with a single supplier. Dennis Eagle was appointed following a competitive tender process. This was evaluated on quality and value, taking into consideration whole life as well as upfront costs.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that all our vehicles are truly bespoke, with each one made up of over 9,000 different components?

ST HELIER’S ‘PURPLE PRINCESS’ A weighty message (all 18 tonnes of it) is now circulating the streets of St Helier following the addition of a new Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicle. Hot on the heels of the vibrant pink vehicle purchased by the parish to help raise awareness of breast and cervical screening, the latest addition to the fleet is painted a striking shade of purple and carries the slogan: ‘There’s no time to waste – diabetes can affect anyone at any time’. Clive Barton, Procurer for St Helier and President of Diabetes Jersey, says: “We have seen the 8

dramatic impact of the refuse truck promoting awareness of breast cancer and felt it was most appropriate that the recent addition to the fleet should be used for a similar purpose in Diabetes Jersey livery”. Connétable Simon Crowcroft and parish officials have been quick to recognise the potential of the vivid advertisements: “We have been delighted with the feedback we have received by using our refuse trucks in this way,” says the Connétable. “Although the medium is unusual, messages carried on these distinctive vehicles clearly have great effect and we have

been delighted to play our part in generating awareness of conditions which have significant impact on the lives of islanders.”

FEATURED A DAY IN THE CUSTOMER LIFE

Robert with his guide dog Ollie.

THE VOICE OF DENNIS EAGLE What’s furry, four legged and sits behind the Dennis Eagle reception desk? People are often surprised to see him peering up at them, but regular visitors know him as Ollie. Ollie, a German Shepherd, is a faithful companion and guide dog to Robert, who mans our reception. Also known as ‘the voice of Dennis Eagle’, Robert is the first person many of our customers come into contact with when they call our switchboard, playing a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the Dennis Eagle ship. We caught up with Robert to learn more about what his job entails.

Q: How long have you worked at Dennis Eagle? A: I’ve worked for Dennis Eagle for 17 years now. After attending a course in Braille and qualifying with an NVQ Level 2 in keyboard skills I applied for the position at Dennis Eagle. I got the job and the rest, as they say, is history. Q: What do you enjoy most about your role? A: I love my job: I look forward to coming in each day and enjoy working with the team here, everyone’s really friendly so there’s always a good atmosphere. I’ve also got to know many customers and suppliers really well over the years so we’ll often have a bit of banter on the phone or over the reception desk.

Q: Tell us about some of the more unusual experiences you’ve had at Dennis Eagle A: We do get a few unusual calls. Once we had a caller asking to speak to someone called John, but they didn’t know his surname. We’ve got lots of Johns working at Dennis Eagle so putting him in touch with the right one seemed impossible until the caller mentioned that he knew the name of John’s dog. We put a call out over the tannoy asking John with a dog called Barney to contact reception and successfully connected him with the caller. We also recently had a visitor who came into reception waving a bit of paper and gesturing with his hands. I tried explaining that I was partially sighted but he seemed to be ignoring me and carried on gesticulating. As it turned out, he was deaf so couldn’t hear a word I was saying!

AFTERMARKET

WARWICK’S FORTRESS Family run business Fortress is an innovative and ethical waste recycling company committed to diverting waste from landfill in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. The majority of Fortress’s 14-strong fleet is made up of Dennis Eagle RCVs, and keeping these vehicles in top condition is an important priority, as Managing Director David Pass explains: “We pride ourselves on delivering excellent customer service, so ensuring the quality and reliability of our fleet is key. All our vehicles are covered by whole life maintenance contracts serviced by Dennis Eagle, helping us keep them in full working order.

10

EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 01 | 2013

“Like Dennis Eagle we’re a Warwick-based business, and one of the many benefits of working with a local supplier is the fact that they are literally 10 or 15 minutes away. They provide us with full cover, meaning that if we ever need assistance from one of their engineers they are just a ‘phone call away.” “We’ve worked with Dennis Eagle since the company was established over 30 years ago and have seen many changes in the industry during this time. The days of sending waste to landfill are numbered, and our fleet is helping us to adapt to the changing needs of the market by enabling us to offer more innovative recycling solutions.

The new additions to the Fortress fleet feature Olympus bodies on Volvo chassis.

“The latest additions to our fleet include two Olympus bodies on Volvo chassis, which were delivered in April. These are being used to launch a new food waste recycling service. Material collected will be sent to an anaerobic digestion facility where the methane is extracted to produce energy. As well as diverting this waste stream from landfill, the process also prevents damaging greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere as the food decomposes, offering a sustainable long term solution.” The new vehicles will be hitting the streets in and around the towns and villages of the West Midlands, helping Fortress develop its offer further as the company continues to evolve in a rapidly changing industry.

Fun in the sand at PAWRS Dennis Eagle had fun in the sand pit at the PAWRS Exhibition, but it’s not castles they were building. Instead, the team commissioned a replica refuse collection vehicle sculpture made entirely from sand. Over four tonnes of sand was used to build the creation. Once complete, the sand vehicle took pride of place on the Dennis Eagle stand alongside the company’s mobile exhibition unit and Olympus Duo. Commercial Manager David Williams comments: “There may not have been much sun this year, but there was certainly sea and sand so we took this opportunity to show a very different exhibit on the stand with our sand sculpture. Although it was somewhat smaller than our regular vehicles, there is no doubt that the time, effort and craftsmanship that went into creating this exhibit echoes the work that takes place at our manufacturing sites, where

all our products are built by hand with the utmost care and attention to detail. “Along with some excellent networking opportunities, PAWRS provides an ideal platform for showcasing our latest products and technologies and highlighting our commitment to driving forward the waste, recycling and sustainability agenda. This year was no exception and we would like to thank all those who took the time to come and visit us.”

FOCUS ON...

...NORTHERN IRELAND This issue, as part of our regular regional focus, we turn our attention to Northern Ireland with a round-up of the latest news from our local distributor, Manvik Plant and Hire Ltd. Despite the challenging economic climate, the Belfast-based company enjoyed a successful 2012 which saw it place orders for 22 complete Dennis Eagle vehicles. This included six Elite 2 chassis with Olympus bodies and Terberg OmniDE bin lifts for Armagh City and District Council, two of which were also supplied with the ENVIROWEIGH binweighing system from Vehicle Weighing Solutions (VWS). The order represented a significant accomplishment for the company as Alan Haire, General Manager for Manvik, explains: “Although we deal with most of the Councils in the Province here, this is the first time in many years that we have

supplied to Armagh City and District Council. We have entered into a full three-year maintenance package plus service contract with Armagh and are absolutely delighted to be working with them.” Eight additional Dennis Eagle vehicles were supplied to Manvik earlier this year for contracts in Cookstown, Craigavon, Ards and Castlereagh for carrying out domestic waste and recycling collections from properties in the area. Due for delivery this month, these will be supplied to Castlereagh Borough Council. Alan says: “One of our key objectives is to work with clients to provide flexible and adaptable RCV solutions. The fact that Dennis Eagle supplies bodies and chassis in a wide variety of sizes and configurations means we can provide tailored solutions that meet their needs.”

One of the six vehicles chosen by Armagh City and District Council for its new three year maintainance and service contract.

David Williams, Commercial Manager for Dennis Eagle, adds: “Manvik is leading the field in Northern Ireland when it comes to delivering quality fleet management solutions and exceptional service and we’re proud to be associated with the company.”

SEEING RED: BIFFA’S DAVID MAIDMAN on...

TACKLING ‘RECYCLE RAGE’ In the first of our new series exploring the challenges facing today’s waste and recycling industry David Maidman, Operations Director for Biffa, looks at the issue of unprovoked aggression towards collection crews and explains how technology is helping to tackle this: Due to the introduction of schemes collecting multiple waste or recycling fractions, vehicles are often spending longer on collection rounds. Coupled with busy modern lifestyles, this can result in a lack of public empathy with crews as they go about their work. Figures from the Environmental Services Association (ESA) show that around 110 violent assaults occur against its members’ staff annually. This issue was brought into focus by the BBC’s The One Show last year, which highlighted incidents of so-called ‘recycle rage’ where drivers stuck behind refuse vehicles threatened and harassed operatives for blocking their way.

Techniques which were factory fitted by Dennis Eagle at its Warwick site. These help us to record and assess incidents, with findings incorporated as part of our on-going operative training programme. South Staffordshire Council has also been particularly vocal in helping to raise awareness of the issue. Our new Dennis Eagle fleet for this contract has these cameras installed throughout. This was supported by a public awareness campaign in conjunction with the local police, which encouraged drivers to be more tolerant when they encounter our vehicles. Across our 40-plus local council contracts last year there were over 100 reports of physical violence towards our staff and in excess of 2,500 recorded incidents of near misses or road traffic accidents caused

by members of the public driving irresponsibly around our vehicles and crews. Our teams are just carrying out their jobs and we do everything we can to minimise disruption when planning rounds, so the message to the public is: drive considerately, be patient and stay safe. If you’ve got a burning industry issue you’d like to air your views on we’d love to hear from you. Please send your suggestions to info@ dennis-eagle.co.uk or tweet us @Dennis_Eagle starting your message with the hashtag #InMyView.

According to the ESA, this trend for aggression has worsened in recent times. However, although it’s not a new phenomenon, the introduction of more sophisticated vehicle technology is enabling us to monitor and address the issue more effectively. A number of vehicles in our Portsmouth, Winchester and East Hampshire fleet feature 360˚ vision cameras from Vision Figures from the Environmental Services Association (ESA) show that around 110 violent assaults occur against its members of staff annually.

Benelux order book GOING strong Orders have been coming in thick and fast from Benelux countries in recent months. Belgian refuse collection company Ilva has ordered six new vehicles in addition to the 20 Olympus bodies already sold via Terberg Benelux. The vehicles are due for delivery in late summer.

With 6x2 rear steer chassis and Olympus bodies, the new vehicles will be used throughout the 14 municipalities of the Aalst in Belgium. Meanwhile Van Happen Containers, the largest privately owned refuse collection and sorting company in Holland, has been so impressed with the Olympus that it has just taken delivery of an Olympus OL21

INVESTMENT & INNOVATION

Although these changes are currently a closely guarded secret, we’re confident they will deliver a greatly enhanced experience for operators, with a host of features designed to offer an even greater level of safety and comfort. Through a series of questionnaires and clinics we’ve listened to what our customers want and have incorporated as many requests as possible into our new cab design. We can also confirm that the engines in these cabs will meet the required reduction of 77 per cent in terms of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 66 per cent in terms of particulate matter (pm). THE LOWDOWN ON...

RECYCLING Look back even just a decade and recycling was the exception rather than the rule. However, driven by rising landfill costs as well as a need to protect our environment and conserve the world’s resources for future generations to come, it has become the norm. At Dennis Eagle, our vehicles have evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of the industry and we have seen

bodies such as the Twin Pack, Duo and One Pass growing in popularity as local authorities and private contractors embrace recycling and work towards increasingly tighter targets. Here are just three examples of customers who are using our vehicles to deliver significant improvements in recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

DID YOU KNOW? •

On average, every person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every seven weeks

The amount of waste we produce is growing by between two and four per cent a year

On average, households are now recycling more than 20 per cent of their rubbish, but more than 60 per cent of what’s thrown away can actually be recycled

Specialist Fleet Services (SFS) and Kier Eighteen new complete Dennis Eagle vehicles went into service for a 1 April contract start at the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. Supplied via Specialist Fleet Services and operated by Kier, the fleet includes four Olympus 19N bodies as well as 14 Olympus 11N Duos all fitted with the Fuel Saver Pack. The vehicles will be servicing around 68,000 homes in the borough, which covers approximately 500 square miles, with the narrow configurations helping crews to navigate the

16

EAGLE EYE | ISSUE 01 | 2013

area’s rural roads. Marking the start of a new scheme for the council, the contract includes alternate weekly refuse and recycling collections, as well as a new weekly food waste collection service. Uptake in the first two weeks was high, with almost 200 tonnes of food waste diverted from landfill. The new scheme is designed to support the council’s aim of increasing recycling rates from 37 per cent to 50 per cent, with additional improvements to be

implemented next April to drive this figure up further. Eddy Carr, Operational Support Manager for Kier, comments: “The council carried out an extensive communications campaign to inform householders about the changes that were being implemented on 1 April. This has definitely paid off. The launch has gone relatively smoothly considering the significant service change and the reaction from most residents has been extremely positive.”

THE LOWDOWN ON...

City of York Council Last year, the City of York Council ordered 17 new Dennis Eagle vehicles. In addition to wide and narrow Olympus configurations, the council also took delivery of eight Olympus One Pass 16s with 50/50 split body. All the bodies were supplied on Elite 2 chassis. The vehicles are being used to collect domestic and garden waste from York’s 87,000 households, with the Olympus

One Pass bodies collecting paper and card, bottles, cans and glass. Andy Kelly, Operations Manager for Waste at the City of York Council, comments: “All the vehicles were delivered by January and they have been fantastic. The payload they offer means we can now have fewer vehicles on the road without impacting on collection capacity.

“We’re also able to collect multiple fractions at once using the One Pass, which is important from a recycling perspective. By 2014 we are aiming to achieve 50 per cent recycling. Our current rate is 47 per cent so the challenge for us over the coming months is to raise this further and achieve our target.”

DORSET WASTE PARTNERSHIP Since Dennis Eagle supplied Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) with 22 new vehicles the organisation has continued the roll-out of its ‘Recycle for Dorset’ service, with the aim of driving waste down and dramatically reducing the amount of refuse sent to landfill.

cent and reducing costs by £2-million a year by 2015/16.

The council took delivery of the order last year, which included the first 11 Olympus Twin Pack One Pass vehicles to roll off the production line. Six months since its launch, the scheme is delivering impressive results, with DWP well on course to achieve its aims of increasing recycling from the current 50 per cent to more than 65 per

Transport Manager Paul Chesterman comments: “We’ve had an extremely positive response from local residents, who are doing their bit to help us recycle more. The vehicles have also been instrumental in helping us to implement the new collection system, allowing us to collect multiple fractions at once.”

Roll-out of the project was supported by an extensive marketing campaign designed to educate householders and communicate the benefits of the new service.

Favourite saying: “I’ll proof read that; let me get my red pen!”

Angela has an exceptional level of technical understanding, gained over 15 years at the company. On the rare occasion that she doesn’t know the answer to a question about one of our vehicles, she will make it her mission to find out and share with the team.

The newest member of the team, Tara retains a “schoolteacherish” need to correct things, gained from her education-sector background.

Eagle-eyed and incredibly thorough, she will power through the technical specification of an invitation to tender, building a clear picture of the final working vehicle in her head, often drawing it to help her colleagues visualise it too!

Tara’s speciality is bid writing and she can come up with the words to describe just about anything. With technical knowledge that grows every day thanks to the support of her colleagues, Tara’s aim is to create exciting and easy to read bid documents which are, most importantly, technically accurate.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know, the bid team at Dennis Eagle prepares over 650 bids each year?

MALCOLM BATES

1992

This issue, the focus is on Malcolm Bates. A familiar face on the waste management circuit, Malcolm has worked in the industry since the age of 17. He is currently Editor of the CIWM publication Municipal Vehicle Operator and Plant and Transport Correspondent for Waste Management World. Q: What are the biggest changes you have seen during your time in the waste and recycling industry? A: One of the biggest changes is the fact that relatively few vehicles or pieces of equipment are manufactured in the UK. Also, historically, most of the contracts were run by the councils themselves but the balance is now shifting to private operators. At one stage, little thought was given to the fuel consumption of the vehicles, but fuel efficiency and noise reduction are now key considerations. Comfort and safety have become more important too, and rightly so, with new features and technologies helping to ensure the wellbeing of crews and drivers.

Although it’s little over twenty years ago, a lot has changed at Dennis Eagle since 1992. This was the year we launched our first low entry cab, the Elite, as documented in this article reproduced courtesy of Commercial Motor magazine. The cab evolved into the Elite 2 in 2006, featuring enhanced design and engineering to provide an even safer, more comfortable and functional environment that is still a firm favourite with crews today. Production at our Warwick and Blackpool sites has also moved up a gear since this article was first published, and we currently produce around 800 vehicles for the home market and in excess of 250 for export, compared to just 300 and 150 respectively in 1992.

Q: What do you think will be the biggest challenge for the industry over the coming years? A: Euro 6 is a big hurdle for the industry but everyone has to conform, so you could say it’s an even playing field. I think the biggest challenge facing manufacturers and operators will be to evaluate and decide whether the advantages of hybrid packs are worth the additional cost. On the one hand, Euro 6 should help to make vehicles quieter and more fuel efficient, however some will still argue that there’s nothing better than zero emissions, but it does come at a cost. Q: What was the last book you read? A: The last book I read was about Winston Churchill’s life in the early years of the war from 1939 – 1941. I bought it in a second hand bookshop in Eton while waiting for a breakdown lorry to come and rescue me and my classic old MG car. Q: What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? A: As anyone who knows me will tell you, I don’t listen to advice very often! I’m better at giving it, so if I could offer one piece of advice to the industry it would be to make better use of the space on the side of refuse collection vehicles. It’s currently an untapped resource, but RCVs are highly visible around the communities in which they operate, so the potential it offers in terms of commercial advertising space is clear.
