Do winter tyres really make a difference? Although unseasonably mild and just out of the best summer for decades, Britain has been hammered by gales and there’s talk of a bitterly cold winter ahead. This probably means it's going to be warm and wet. But let's say the forecasts are correct. How do you prepare for the inevitable paralysis that grips the nation at the first flurry? Easy, if you’re thinking of changing your car: buy a 4x4. They seem ideal, don’t they? The heightened driving position, improved visibility, general practicality and (be honest!) the feeling of superiority. As a car dealership, we love this line of thought – but it’s not actually true that you need a 4x4 to get around. In Scandinavia, 4x4 sales as a proportion of total vehicle sales are far smaller than here in the UK, and it’s much the same story in Switzerland. Most cars there are shod with winter tyres instead. Winter Driving Tips Plan Ahead Plan extra time for your journey and make sure you’re fully prepared before you set off. Don’t just hop in the car with a tiny hole cleared in the windscreen. And remember – getting there safely is more important than getting there on time!

Driving on Snow and Ice First, slow down! Your stopping distances may be 10 times longer than normal. Braking when turning on ice or snow is very dangerous – try to do it only when travelling in a straight line. Wear comfy, dry shoes, not your snowcovered clodhoppers. Dangerous conditions may mean you need to be nimble on the pedals.

Pull away from stops using second gear on flat ground. Be gentle with the clutch to avoid wheelspin and stalling. Try not to stop when driving up hills – think ahead and try to leave plenty of space between you and the car in front. Keep a constant speed. Reduce your speed to the minimum going downhill. Use a low gear and leave as much space as possible between you and the car in front. Use engine braking and avoid using the footbrakes if you can. If you get stuck, remain calm. Rock the car back and forth gently rather than trying to use power to break free. Put gravel or something else to aid traction under the drive wheels. If you’re really stuck, call the emergency services and stay with your vehicle.

Alix Popham It’s great to be able to be with my two daughters when they’re out of school in the summers. I also fill my time doing a bit of coaching – I’ve just come back from Portugal where I spent 5 days with Belmont Mill Hill Prep School coaching and organising a tournament. You still look pretty buff, what are you doing to keep fit? With my shoulder injury I can’t lift weights, but I’m doing a lot of cycling. I have a good mix of friends and other ex-players who cycle so it’s a good way to meet people.

It’s been three years since you hung up your boots. It was a fantastic career with spells at Leeds, the Scarlets and latterly Brive, collecting 33 senior caps for Wales along the way. That was quite a journey. What were the high points for you? Winning the Principality Cup as 22-year-old a decade ago with Newport and bringing the trophy back to Rodney Parade was an early moment, but beating England at Twickenham for the first time in 23 years in 2008, which then led to the Grand Slam, has to be the highlight.

I understand you led a ride out to Brive this year? What was that all about? We went in April – a 500-mile ride from Pontypridd to Brive in France for charity. We had a team of 26 people who didn’t know each other at the start but by the time we finished we were a big family. Any other monster rides planned? Next year I’m doing another one for charity on the last bank holiday in August from Billericay in Essex to Barry in Wales. 220 miles all in. Get involved if you can! Back to Rugby. It’s been an interesting start to the season, on and off the pitch. What do you think of the English and French club plans to form a new tournament, and are the regions right to support it? England, Wales, and Scotland couldn’t survive without the Heineken Cup competition. It’s the best club competition in the world. The sooner they sort it out the better. It’s only good for the game for these big companies to get involved and pump more money into the sport. The sooner they get that sorted the better. Then we’ll know what’s happening next year.

Do you miss the buzz of the game? I still get it helping and coaching. Kids are sponges just taking on as much knowledge as possible – about training, playing, nutrition and so on – and when you see your teaching pay off it’s a thrill.

What about the new scrummage rules? They needed to do something about that. In December and January, there were scrums going down left right and centre. It’ll speed up and improve the game. I don’t know if all front rowers would agree with that but as a back rower I just wanted to get the ball out and play. I think it’s good for the spectators too.

So what fills your time now? After working for DePuy Orthopaedics for 18 months, which was great for the structure it gave my life - I’ve been working for myself in property development as I wanted the flexibility to be with my young family. I’ve been doing that since December 2012.

Expectations in Wales are very high after our players made up the majority of the hugely successful Lions tour. Can we carry this success into the Autumn Tests? Over the past few years when we’ve done so well at events, we’ve struggled during the Autumn Series. We should just carry

As regions we’ve not done too well in the Heineken Cup, but as a squad we can do well. OK, let’s hear it. What are your predictions for each game? For me, I think all of them are going to be tough. A lot of Wales haven’t played together since 6 Nations. But we’ve had a couple of week’s preparation. I’d like to win all four but I predict we win two, lose two. I won’t say which! Welsh player to watch? Mike Phillips. I think he makes the team tick. But we’ve got class throughout the squad. I hope a couple of more unknown players will make an impact given the chance. Overseas player to watch? Quaid Cooper of Australia. He wasn’t picked for the Lions and he’ll want to come over here and prove that he should have been!

GRIFFIN MILL RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN IN NEED Griffin Mill is supporting Children in Need in partnership with Peugeot UK for another year.

said Anthony Griffin, Managing Director. “It’s a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause and help disadvantaged young people. We raised £1,500 in 2012 and hope to do even better this year. The team is raring to go already.”

To help raise money, Griffin Mill is taking part by selling Pudsey’s Car Wash Packs and other Children in Need merchandise, including Pudsey ears, teddy bears and wristbands, plus all sorts of other wonderful Pudsey stuff in the lead-up to the big telethon on November 15th.
