LEARNERS ARE ON THE ROAD TO LICENCES A scheme to help young people boost their employability by learning to drive is going from strength to strength. The GrEW Driving School offers free driving lessons to young people from across RCT, in return for volunteering with Grow Enterprise Wales. The school currently has 20 pupils on its books, with the first few almost ready to take their tests.

The driving school is being supported by Griffin Mill, which donated a car for the project to use. Griffin Mill Sales Director Mark Pardoe said: “Griffin Mill is really pleased to provide GrEW with a brand new Nissan for this groundbreaking approach. The project fits perfectly with our philosophy to work with local initiatives. At Griffin Mill we like to see what we’ve supported in action, but also we’ve not lost sight of the fact that we are a 51 year-old company which has thrived because of support from the local community. I believe our future depends on maintaining this support.” The GrEW driving school offers lessons for free in exchange for time spent volunteering with GrEW. In order to be eligible, volunteers need to have spent a month volunteering for at least 15 hours per week. Volunteers will be able to gain useful work experience and work-related skills at GrEW, while the driving school offers the chance to further boost employability. Anthony Griffin and the team at Griffin Mill were only too pleased to help. “We could see from the outset that

this project was really going to make a difference to local people, and it’s wonderful to see the impact it’s already having. Employers want a flexible and reliable workforce. We believe being able to drive is essential for both, particularly if you apply for work in areas not well covered by public transport." One GrEW volunteer who is currently benefitting from the driving school’s help is 24 year-old Carl Bluett, from Ynysybwl. Carl, who has been volunteering with GrEW for seven months, said: “My driving is going very well. Catriona is a really good teacher, and she says I’m coming along well.

“Because I’m on Job Seeker's Allowance, learning to drive would have been a bit pricey if I hadn’t done it through GrEW. I’d have had to borrow money from my mother to learn, but this means I don’t have to do that.” Instructor Catriona Gray said: “The response has been absolutely huge. We’ve got several volunteers waiting to start their lessons. The offer of free lessons in exchange for volunteering means there’s now a waiting list to volunteer with GrEW! “Once the first pupils have taken, and hopefully passed their tests, we’ll be able to get a few more on the road.”

James oversees the Nissan and Skoda brands at Basecamp, a new site built by local familyowned motor retailer Griffin Mill. James took the job as part of Griffin Mill’s plan to provide outstanding choice and customer service at the new location, just as they have done for decades at their original Summit site on the hill above the A470. James’s career began in 1998 when he first joined the industry as a trainee sales executive. Subsequently he joined Dutton Forshaw, working there for 12 years, an experience which prepared him to answer
