Hendy win national award for Digital Initiative of the Year. Wednesday 10th July was another stellar night for Hendy at the latest motor industry awards held in London, as the Hendy Group picked up the award for Digital Initiative of the Year. Held at Grosvenor House in London’s West End, the Motor Trader Industry Awards 2013 recognise the top performers from across the industry. Competition was fierce, but the judges were only too pleased to hand the award to Hendy for our exceptional Red

Nose Day campaign held earlier in the year. The online Facebook and Twitter campaign really was all about you, as we donated cash to Comic Relief for putting red noses onto our willing followers and friends' profile pictures. The initiative helped raise £1,000 for Comic Relief on behalf of Hendy Kia, and complemented Hendy’s group-wide efforts in support of the charity. For more on the winning campaign, go to page 4. 3

Wessex Truck Show 10 - 11 August We had a fantastic time showcasing all the latest Iveco models and meeting lots of new customers at the first ever Wessex Truck Show. If you missed it this time around, make sure you come along and speak to us when it returns next year!

Winchester Criterium and Cyclefest 11 August As you may know, Hendy began as a bicycle repair shop in Whitchurch back in 1852 and so to stay true to our heritage, we proudly sponsored this great race. We had a great day chatting with customers and visiting the City of Winchester to see a road race with a difference, with cyclists racing through the streets of this ancient city.

Portsmouth Motor Show 17 - 18 August The Hendy New Car Sales team were out in force at the Portsmouth Motor Show this year down at Port Solent, enjoying the great attractions and a little sunshine.

Summer Events ! Dorset County Show 7 - 8 September Since 1841, the Dorset County Show has been a celebration of all things Dorset and the countryside. The Iveco team will be at the show this year to have a cuppa and a chat with everyone interested in the award winning range. With fantastic attractions and entertainment, it’s sure to be a great day out.

Romsey Show 14 September The Romsey Show, which takes place at Broadlands, has been held annually since 1842 and is one of the longest running events in England. Hendy will be there this year to have a chat with everyone interested in the current car range.

PSP Southampton Boat Show 13 - 22 September The biggest boat show in the south is nearly here! Hendy Power and Hendy Honda Marine will be at the PSP Southampton Boat Show at stand G114, joining over 450 exhibitors to showcase what we can do for you, on and off the water with engines and demonstrations. With over 47,000 square meters of space and over 300 boats on the marina, this highly popular event will be a great day out. Abel & Cole Hendy supply vans to Abel & Cole, an organic food delivery service. In the previous issue of Torque we brought you news that Abel & Cole were donating a van to Starfish Malawi, a Christian charity dedicated to establishing caring, empowered communities and spreading the Gospels. We’re pleased to say that after months in legal limbo thanks to government red tape and some overenthusiastic tax collectors, the donation of 10,000 shoes (collected from Abel & Cole’s customers) and 1 van (checked and serviced by Hendy) has gone through, and the charity is now in the process of putting everything to good use. The van’s journey is shown to the right. We hope it stays on the roads for many more years to come!

Olympic Visit James Foad’s inspiring visit to Bitterne Park Hendy’s sponsored Olympic Athlete, James Foad spent a very special day rowing with year 10 pupils at Bitterne Park Secondary School. He went head-to-head against the students (and the staff) on the rowing machines as he took the pupils through his achievements and headed up a question and answer session explaining what it takes to be an elite athlete.

The visit is part of James’ efforts to inspire the next generation of Olympic athletes. “Having an elite athlete like James visit us, and listening to how he had trained was amazing for the pupils to hear. He was a big hit with all of them,” said Deputy Head Teacher Pan Panayoitou. After last year’s Olympics where James won a bronze medal in the men’s eight rowing event, we’re excited to see what he’ll accomplish next. He’s already off to a great start inspiring the south coast in sport.

IVECO

International Truck of the Year pairing for A.F.S. Haulage, supplied by Hendy Iveco Eastleigh-based A.F.S. Haulage has replaced two older vehicles with a pair of Iveco Stralis Hi-Way tractor units, in the company’s striking red livery. The units which were supplied by Hendy Iveco have been voted International Truck of the Year for 2013. A.F.S. Haulage Managing Director Andy Seagrave said: “The soaring cost of diesel means it is more important than ever to take fuel performance into account when ordering new vehicles. You can’t presume that all trucks perform the same - a difference of just 1 mpg can have a huge impact on operating costs.” The two Stralis Hi-Way tractors, supplied by Hendy Iveco, will be used where the driver is away for at least three to four nights a week. 14

Seagrave explains: “Looking after our drivers is a top priority, and the Hi-Way cab offers a great mix of living and working space. It’s particularly well suited for drivers tramping around the country, with plenty of on-board comforts helping to make it a home away from home.” A.F.S. Haulage will keep the Stralis Hi-Ways in frontline operation for the next six years, prior to being moved onto local work. They have been supplied on Iveco Elements repair and maintenance agreements, which will see all servicing and maintenance undertaken through the Iveco dealer network.


Refurbished IVECO Truck in Scandinavia Nick and Martina came to Hendy Van and Truck in Exeter looking to MOT their now very rare 1991 Iveco, originally commissioned by the Army as an ambulance. It needed some work and Steve Caton, Service Manager at Exeter, took care of the revamp, replacing the original engine and overhauling the gearbox, amongst other repairs. Nick and Martina have now spent weeks crossing Scandinavia. On their adventures they have been kayaking, fishing, swimming and hiking, visiting stunning natural features including the most northern point of Europe,

where they saw the famous midnight sun. Together they have spent over 5,000km on paved and unpaved roads covering Sweden, Norway and Finland. Even after months spent in the Arctic Circle on rutted tracks and unsealed roads (covered by snow and ice for 8 months of the year) their Iveco handled the challenges admirably. We wonder where they will go next!

News Colas take on EcoDaily order Hendy Van & Truck recently supplied a fleet of new Iveco ECODAILY 7-tonne tippers to Colas, the road construction experts. The vehicles are going to work on a major initiative with Portsmouth City Council, supporting the maintenance and management of the city’s roads as part of a long-term contract.

"I cannot fault the customer service at Hendy Ford Portsmouth. I had a major problem with the handin g over of my old vehicle as it failed its MOT on the wing mirror. I was having the new one replaced on the Thursday and picking the new car up on the Friday morning and had get my Renault re-tested before the to swap. I phoned Lee (Harris) at Hendy Ford Portsmouth and he spoke to his manag er explaining the situation and they managed to get me in for an MOT on the Friday morning before the hando ver, even offering me a courtesy car if needed. This led to a smooth handover. I have to say that the customer care I received was a vast improvement from the dealing I have had with Renault (previous car), the walkthrough of the car and all of the gadgets was invaluable and I know if I do indeed have any queries the team will be on hand to help. Overall an extremely happy and satisfi ed

The New Mazda3 The all-new Mazda3 was recently unveiled and is set to make its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Mandy Wilson of Hendy Business is pictured here handing over the keys to Angela Elliott, Fleet Manager at Spectrum Property Services. “We were kept informed on the progress of the vehicles, the Ford Transits were delivered on the date we were given, and they all arrived together,” said Angela about the delivery. “Mandy also took the time to come and see 24

Caterfoods SW Ltd Five Iveco Dailys handed over to local business. Mike Evans recently handed over 5 Iveco vehicles to Mike Felton at Caterfoods SW Ltd, a local family business that Hendy have worked closely with for over 15 years. Staff Profile Simon Smith Logistics & Hire Group Manager I’m the Logistics and Hire Manager for Chandler’s Ford. How long have you been in the role? I’ve worked for Hendy for 7 years. For 5 years, I worked in hire before moving on to logistics management. In this last year I’ve taken on both at once. How did you find yourself in this role? I just stumbled into it. I worked in the food industry virtually all my life. At the time I was a single parent and when I met my current partner I needed a new job. I began at Hendy as a driver, then went to Rent Operator and applied for a position in logistics which brings us up-to-date.

What do you find the most enjoyable aspect of your role? I love that it’s different every day. It’s also very rewarding to finish at the end of the day and make sure everyone’s happy. What’s the worst thing to have happened to you at work? It didn’t happen at my location, but a customer hired a large van once. Pulling over on a country lane to let someone go by, he didn’t notice the low, overhanging tree above him... If you were buying a new car, what would it be? The Kia Sportage is a great car at the moment – the value and spec are great. I drive a Galaxy because I need the space for the family but I’d have that if I didn’t.

What’s the best thing about working for Hendy? I love the fact that it’s a family company. The Hendys always know who you are, and so do the directors. We’re not just numbers – we all know each other’s faces. What are you looking forward to the most over the next year? Over the next year we’re building up Hendy Hire like a new business again. There’s a lot to do! A bit about Simon. Simon’s a Team Leader for a ghost hunting company called Southern Ghost Society. They take people out on ghost hunting trips around some of the country’s most spooky places.

Assessment days at Hendy Over the years we’ve occassionally found it difficult to recruit sales staff. We always know who we’re looking for, but finding them can be a challenge. Since last year, we’ve teamed up with a company called Insight1 to run four assessment days, with a fifth taking place in a few weeks’ time. They’ve proven to be a great way to find talent we may have missed if we only looked at CVs. The whole assessment day is based around the X Factor. After each assessment, we all return to the main room and if a candidate’s name is called out, they leave us. By lunchtime about half the candidates remain, and by 5pm only five are left. It’s only then that we

actually look at their CVs. We are often surprised by what we see, because a candidate’s ability as a salesman isn’t often reflected in their education or employment history. Instead, they prove to us that they have what it takes, even if they haven’t done it before. In the end, we like our recruits because we’ve spent time getting to know them, and we can teach them how to do things the Hendy way (which after 150 years must be on the right lines). The people left at the end of the day are invited to a formal interview with the manager within 48 hours of their assessment to finalise the recruitment process. So far, all have joined us.
