European Car of the Year. It’s longer, lower, wider, lighter, faster and more luxurious than the car that went before – but there’s still much to discover about the new Peugeot 308. The small hatchback is incredibly competitive, so to beat their rivals the team at Peugeot worked hard to make the car truly segment-leading. The facts speak for themselves. There are eight engines to choose from, and every diesel engine option emits 100g/km of CO2 or less and achieves at 6
least 70mpg, and next year’s BlueHDi model will deliver a segment-leading 91mpg. The new chassis saves 140kg of weight, though thanks to new construction techniques, it’s stronger than before. That makes the new 308 more responsive and controlled, with shorter stopping distances and better performance. The figures are only half the story – to experience what the Peugeot 308 has become, you need to drive one for yourself.

308 SW A great estate. Based on the 308 hatch, the 308 SW (or estate, if you prefer) shares the same smart looks and good drive with its hatchback – already named European Car of the Year. At 322mm longer than the hatch, the 308 SW’s longer wheelbase allowed Peugeot to push the rear seats back for more legroom. The rest of the added length was given over to 8
the boot, so the 308 SW offers best-in-class rear seat and boot space. The 660-litre boot is fitted with plenty of tie-down points and has 70 litres of underfloor space too, for items that you’d prefer to keep out of sight. A raft of low-emissions engine and gearbox combinations keep the 308 SW affordable to run, and make it an ideal

The Peugeot 508 received a round of updates this year to make it better looking, more efficient and better value for company car drivers. The sharp new front end inspired by Peugeot’s Exalt concept. The grille is lower and wider, and the headlights are more compact, giving the 508 a tauter, more aggressive look. Underneath the new, flatter bonnet, the introduction of the BlueHDi engine is the biggest news. The 2.0-litre diesel engine provides 148bhp with emissions of just 105g/km – staggering figures for a car of this size. The diesel-electric HYbrid4 model takes efficiency even further, achieving best-
in-class figures of 85.6mpg and 85g/km. The low emissions will reduce the cost of Vehicle Excise Duty and benefit-in-kind tax. Inside the interior has been simplified to streamline the driving experience. Most of the features are controlled through a new 7-inch touchscreen, and new options like blind spot monitoring and a reversing camera are now available. The new 508 is ready to order before deliveries commence on 10th September, starting at around £20,000.

The king of the ring. Every practical detail is considered in the latest Peugeot Boxer. After a comprehensive update to the interior, exterior and mechanicals, the Boxer remains king of the ring. The changes are obvious on the outside – sharp new 12
headlights, floating grille, LED daytime running lights – but are far more than skin-deep. Peugeot also redesigned the interior to be more practical and higher quality, adding more equipment as standard and tougher plastics for better durability. The engines have

More capable than ever. The latest Nissan X-Trail has shed its predecessor’s bulky off-roader image to become a far sleeker, more sophisticated SUV. It’s more capable, better equipped and easier to live with according to reviewers, but you can find out for yourself as the X-Trail arrived at Arbury Nissan showrooms this July. The first thing you’ll notice is that it’s totally different inside. No longer a sparse off roader, it’s filled with pleasant soft-touch materials, and

new technology. The 7-inch touchscreen interface Nissan Connect system can pair with your phone and work together with your apps. Safety tech includes blind spot warning, Safety Shield (which includes emergency city braking and lane departure warning systems), moving object detection, 360-degree vision and radar-based forward braking. Around View Monitor uses cameras around the car to create a birds’-eye view of the vehicle to make it easier
to park. There’s enough technology on board to rival far more expensive competitors, and with an option to seat up to 7 people, plenty of friends and family can come along to enjoy the ride. On the road, the X-Trail takes inspiration from the smaller Qashqai rather than traditional 4x4s. Light steering makes manoeuvring easy, and the slick 6-speed manual gearbox shifts smoothly. If you prefer, Nissan’s Xtronic CVT auto is an option. Best of all, downsizing
from a 2.0 to a 1.6-litre diesel engine (standard on all models) pays huge dividends in running costs. The X-Trail has dropped 10 insurance groups, is four tax bands cheaper than before and now returns 57.6mpg combined in two-wheel-drive manual guise. So: it’s loaded with tech, good to drive, spacious, efficient and affordable to run. All you need to do now is try it for yourself.

The Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 van reduce running costs by thousands of pounds, and cost as little as 2p per mile to run. Both are exempt from road tax and benefit-in-kind tax, emit no CO2 and burn no fossil fuels at all in operation. Plus, both receive government assistance to get them on the road, keeping purchasing costs low. Any fleet operator looking for a way to cut motoring bills and emissions should start with the Nissan electric range. *Subject to electricity rates.

Running costs from just 2p per mile*
A hundred years ago, electric vehicles outnumbered petrol and diesel cars on the roads. Though oil-power won out over the 20th century, there is much to recommend electric vehicles. Grants and tax-saving opportunities for electric vehicles mean that they can be a cost-effective way to run a fleet, especially for operators in urban areas. Nissan is aiming to make them still more compelling, and the new e-NV200 van is the next phase of a plan that began with the acclaimed LEAF in 2011. The e-NV200 is the all-electric version of Nissan’s new compact van. Research indicated that a third of all vans on the road travel fewer than 80 miles per day, and the 106-mile range of the e-NV200 is Nissan’s gambit
for revolutionising urban transport. At its best in built-up areas, where stop-start driving, regenerative braking and instant torque delivery combine to make the e-NV200 more efficient and easy to drive than conventionally-powered alternatives. Payload and cargo space are unaffected by electric drivetrain. The base price is £16,562, although operators can choose to lease the battery for £61 per month to reduce the purchase price to £13,393. Over four years, Nissan calculates that the e-NV200 will save £4,000 in fuel, £575 on servicing and maintenance, and £900 in VED over an equivalent dieselpowered van. In London, by avoiding the Congestion Charge, the e-NV200 could save almost £11,000 over four years. 21
from After topping the sales charts with the Qashqai and Juke crossovers, Nissan has re-joined the fray in the tough hatchback segment by revitalising a familiar name: the Pulsar. Designed to fight the Focus, Golf and Astra, the Pulsar joins the Nissan range just below the Qashqai, sharing family styling and technology with its bigger sibling. The Pulsar will start from ÂŁ15,995 for the base Visia model, rising to ÂŁ20,345 for the feature-laden Tekna version, which includes heated leather seats, object and collision detection, 17-

inch alloys and a full suite of infotainment extras. Details on operating costs are still under wraps before the model debut, but Nissan has indicated they are aiming for driving excitement over simple competence in the Pulsar. The range begins with a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel four that Nissan says will emit less than 95g/km of CO2. Looking to the future, Nissan have announced a 187bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine will arrive in early 2015 for still more thrills, plus a range-topping NISMO version with over 200bhp later on. The Pulsar arrives in UK showrooms in autumn this year.

Key information for tax year 2014/15 • New percentage bandings for company car tax come into force in April, with the lowest rate continuing at 5% (8% for diesels). Diesel hybrid cars are exempt from the 3% diesel tax charge. • For light commercial vehicles, including ‘DoubleCab’ pick up trucks, the BIK tax benefit charge rises to £3,090 in 2014/15, or £3,581 if the employer also provides ‘free’ fuel for private mileage. • From April 2015, the 5% rate of BIK tax (8% for diesels) is extended to cars

with CO2 emissions of 0-50g/km, while those with CO2 emissions of between 51-75g/km attract a tax charge of 9% (12% for diesels). • From April 6th, 2016, the 3% diesel tax charge is abolished, enabling diesel cars to be taxed at the same rate as petrol cars. However, the lowest BIK tax charge rate increases to 7% for cars with CO2 emissions of 0-50g/km, while drivers of cars with CO2 emissions of 51-75g/km are taxed at 11%.
BUDGET • Vehicle Excise Duty rates rise in line with the Retail Price Index in 2014/15, applicable from April 1st, 2014. • The fuel benefit charge used to calculate the tax due on employer-provided fuel for private use rises to £21,700 from April 6th 2014. For vans, the benefit charge rises to £564 from the same date. • Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) rates, for business mileage in a private car, remain at 45p/mile for the first 10,000 business
miles, and 25p/mile for business mileage over 10,000. • Class 1A NICs, payable by employers on the company car benefit, remain as is for 2013/14 at 13.8% of taxable value annually. • The rise in road fuel duty planned for September 2014 is cancelled and the Chancellor announced fuel duty will remain frozen for the remainder of this Parliament.

Company car tax in 2014/15 and beyond. For 2014/15, cars with CO2 emissions of 1-75g/km qualify for company car tax at 5% (8% for diesels), while those with CO2 emissions of 76-94g/ km qualify in the 11% band (14% for diesels).
subject to the same level of tax as petrol cars. At the same time the rate for cars emitting 0-50g/km of CO2 rises to 7%, while the rate for CO2 emissions of 51-75g/km rises to 11%.
The rate for cars with CO2 emissions of 95-99g/km is 12% (15% for diesels), increasing by 1% for every 5g/km to the maximum of 35%, as shown in the chart to the right.
It will be seen that this rule change will result in a reduction in BIK tax liability in 2016/17 for drivers of diesel cars with CO2 emissions of up to 199g/km compared with 2015/16.
For cars with CO2 emissions of 1-75g/km the threshold remains at 5% until April 2015, when this rate applies to cars with CO2 emissions of 0-50g/ km. Those with CO2 emissions of 51-75g/km will attract a 9% charge (12% for diesels). In April 2016, the 3% tax charge for diesels is abolished so that diesel cars will become

2014/15 How to
calculate company car tax in 2014/15. The calculation of company car tax liability in 2014/15 depends on the car’s P11D price and CO2 emissions, and whether or not it is a diesel vehicle. CO2 emissions figures for all cars can be found at the Vehicle Certification Agency at www.dft.gov.uk/vca All diesel cars registered on or after January 1st 2006, are liable to a 3% tax charge.
Example: (To calculate your own costs, simply replace XX with your own figures)
In 2014/15 a Car and model here, with a P11D price of £XX,XXX and CO2 emissions of XXXg/km, will attract a tax charge of XX% of its P11D value. £XX,XXX x XX% gives a taxable value of £X,XXX, equating to yearly tax liability of £XXX (£XX per month) for a XX% tax payer or £X,XXX (£XXX per month) for a XX% tax payer.
