St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School admits students of any race, sex, color, national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies and other administered programs.
Thomas the Tiger – Our New Mascot! Thomas the Tiger, whose father Thomas had been the mascot of St. Thomas for 30 years, became the official St. Thomas mascot during the 2011-2012 school year. While Thomas’s father liked to pose for pictures looking ferocious, young Thomas has been around St. Thomas long enough to learn about respect and listening and caring about other people. Thomas explains, “I learned that I could root and cheer like crazy for my team, the St. Thomas Tigers (GO TEAM!), and enjoy the games even more if everybody was a good sport and a team player.” Copies made of Thomas are soft and huggable. They are given to children who visit the school, to help them feel comfortable and happy during the visit. Thomas’s duties as mascot, in addition to welcoming children who visit, are to cheer loudly for the St. Thomas Tigers and to be the “paws on the ground” as the roving reporter, bringing you the latest news from St. Thomas. CORE VALUES
ST. THOMAS IS STEAM-DRIVEN!
Episcopal School Values Academic Excellence, Lifelong Learning Inclusive and Diverse Community Nurturing Environment for the Whole Child Global Citizenship Sustainability
STEM and STEAM are acronyms for two of the most exciting, forward-looking concepts in education today. St. Thomas began working with the STEM concept several years ago. At the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, we welcomed our first STEM Specialist. During the year we expanded STEM to STEAM as the basis for integrated education by adding “A” for “Arts.”
A Little History
OUR MISSION
The STEM concept resulted from national studies in recent years that focused on the United States’ rapidly losing a competitive edge in education. The STEM initiative was born, emphasizing the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as integrated curriculum rather than as stand-alone classroom subjects. STEM was originally a vision for high schools and colleges. St. Thomas was one of the first elementary schools in our area to bring the concept to the elementary level. The dedication of the Symbiosis STEM Lab in 2012 reflected St. Thomas’s commitment to the program.
St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School is a secure and loving community that nurtures and challenges children. We teach children to honor God, respect others and themselves, care for their world, and develop a lasting enthusiasm for discovering and learning.
Students Need 21st Century Skills St. Thomas’s Curriculum Coordinator, Caitlin O’Keefe, described the shift in educational thinking that applies to both STEM and STEAM, saying that “in the direction the world is going, the importance is not so much content as skills, no matter what the job is.” The skills that educators have identified as critical for the real world of the 21st century are the Four Cs:

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the listings in this report. This annual report acknowledges contributions from donors to St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School for the period July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. We regret and apologize for inadvertent errors or omissions and ask that corrected information be given to: The Advancement Office, St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School, 5692 N. When most of us think back on our education from elementary school through college, we remember attending math class at 10:00, social studies at 11:00, science at 1:00, and so on. Each subject was taught as a single discipline. Then came the STEM vision of integrating the science/technology/engineering/math subjects. Once that vision took hold, it became obvious that in the real world, art and design are also integral to the majority of science/technology projects. Students in a STEAM-driven program begin with real-world problems – like a bridge needed in a newly developed area or levees that have to be re-built to better standards after a hurricane. Clearly the art and design aspect is essential to the collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication involved in the project.
Integrated Curriculum—the Challenge and the Joy For teachers, the goal of integrating their own disciplines with other disciplines is an ongoing challenge. Some subject areas integrate more easily than others. Those are the starting places. The STEAM articles in this report focus on the STEAM letters, one at a time. But note the creative, innovative approaches being designed by teachers in each subject area to achieve integration between their subjects and other subjects. The STEAM engine at St. Thomas has started down the tracks, and we’ve planned the first few stops along the way. As education and technology continue to evolve, tracks will be laid to explore places and spaces we can’t even imagine today.

WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
KITTY FINNERAN
Welcome to the Annual Report for 2013-14. What a glorious year it was! At the beginning of the year, we moved ahead with our STEM program, added the position of Education Technology Integrator, and made significant additions to the technology provided for our students. The iPad program began for younger students, complementing the laptop program for older students, and new technology infrastructure was added to support it. In November we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of St. Thomas School with a three-day schedule of events that included a reunion for alumni, a carnival for today’s students, and worship for the entire community of St. Thomas, past and present. At the same time that we were celebrating the past, we were adding the Arts to the STEM program, creating the beginning of STEAM education. St. Thomas has always had a commitment to keeping the best of the past while forging ahead with the best of new educational practices, and last year was a perfect example of that blend.
THE RETIREMENT OF A LEGEND AT ST. THOMAS
In this report you will find a special STEAM section that explains some of the work that our Curriculum Coordinator and teachers did last year with Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math – teaching these subjects and at the same time, learning to integrate them with other subjects. The STEM/STEAM approach of integrated education is what educators on the national level are convinced is the very best approach for 21st century needs. As we move ahead into new areas, we are doing it with the careful consideration and support by the Board of Trustees, and with training for our teachers by experts. Our faculty members attended workshops and classes at various places locally and in other cities, and we brought workshop leaders to the campus for professional development. We will continue to work with consultants who will guide and train us as we move into the exciting world of a full STEAM approach to education. Providing this level of education and enrichment far exceeds the income from tuition, and I am deeply grateful to the continually amazing work of the parent volunteers and the school administration involved in Annual Giving, the Securing Our Future capital campaign, the Parents’ Association, and the Endowment. A new creation of the Gala last year, Fund a Need, brought in the funds to upgrade the technology infrastructure that allowed us to move forward with new educational technology. We have such generous, committed donors at St. Thomas! With sadness and appreciation, we ended the year with a celebration of Kitty Finneran’s 34 years at St. Thomas. As I said on that occasion, I will always be grateful to my friend, colleague, and mentor. Finneran Field will be a lasting reminder of how much we love her.

In May, St. Thomas celebrated the remarkable 34-year career of Associate Head Kitty Finneran, who began as physical education director, then became the guidance counselor, and then served as an administrator – three distinct positions under six different heads. In late May, the dedication of Finneran Field became a permanent tribute to the incredible impact she had on the St. Thomas family. Mrs. Finneran described her function as associate head as “tending to the housekeeping things, the nuts and bolts behind the scenes that keep things moving smoothly.” The St. Thomas community certainly experienced that critically important function…and so much more! After 13 years as physical education teacher and coach at St. Thomas, Mrs. Finneran earned a master’s degree in school guidance counseling and began a new career. She created the “Opportunity Room,” where she met with students, parents, and teachers; and she designed a curriculum that included sessions on self-esteem building, assertiveness training, anti-bullying, study skills, friendship-making, and self-control. Asked to become Associate Head in 1995, Mrs. Finneran reflected, “I didn’t plan this for myself. I didn’t see my own administrative potential, but it evolved and it turned out well. It has been a joyful journey.” For students, parents, teachers, and parishioners in the St. Thomas Community at any time in the last 34 years, a highlight of their joyful St. Thomas experience has been Kitty Finneran.

ST. THOMAS SCHOOL BOARD
As we embark upon our 61st year, the Trustees of St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School want to take a moment to thank all of the people over the years who have worked so hard to make this institution what it is today. We have terrific facilities, we are on solid financial footing, and we continue our dedication to nurturing our children to honor God and to respect themselves and others. We embrace our teachers who, every day, commit themselves to academic excellence and fostering intellectual curiosity. And, of course, we are so grateful to have been led over these thirteen years by our wise and thoughtful leader, Kris Charlton. This will be a very special year as we celebrate Mrs. Charlton's extraordinary and transformative vision for this incredible Parish School.
RETIRING BOARD MEMBERS
We celebrate those individuals who over the years had the vision to invest in our community. As I often tell people, when my oldest child entered pre-K, her classroom was a trailer, because our beautiful classroom building with its expansive library, STEM lab, and other facilities did not exist. Finneran Field was simply a dream. The Tobin building was not even a twinkle in any one's eye. But, because of our forebears, those dreams became a reality. Our work, however, is not done. With your help, we remain committed to securing and improving our campus and ensuring the future stability of the School with a strong endowment. Thank you to all of you for your continued support of this very special place we call St. Thomas. Sincerely,
Beth Pryor Johnson

ALL ABOARD!
The celebration of the 60th Anniversary of St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School was a wonderful series of events last year. In so many ways, it was about sharing the story of St. Thomas – telling the stories of the people who have made this such a special place. It was awesome to me, having been here for only six years, to meet some of the people who went back 60 years to the very beginning. I loved learning about the people who were here at different times during the six decades, in all those moments as the Parish School dreamed, grew, developed, built buildings, replaced buildings, and passed the baton of leadership from one person to the next. The stories and pictures that were collected for the anniversary make the past history of St. Thomas School come alive more fully as we continue to be part of the living history.
‘
WELCOME FROM OUR RECTOR Mother Lippe, Father Walker, Father Milian
In the pages ahead, join us as we board the STEAM train. It is pulling out of the station and heading to wonderful destinations.
At the Celebration Mass, three bishops led the procession – Bishop Leo Frade, Bishop Calvin Schofield, and Bishop Hugo Pina, who came from Cuba to St. Thomas as a young priest in the late ‘60s and went on to become a bishop. Former heads of school, former clergy, and local dignitaries joined returning alumni and parents of alumni for various anniversary gatherings. The anniversary was a reminder that God has provided for St. Thomas School for a long time, and we can rest assured in God’s continuing providence. Looking at our beautiful campus today, with the new landscaping, the completed enclosure, and the new playfield – Finneran Field! – I want us to experience all of this as God’s grace. If we think of living and seeing life sacramentally, the beauty we see every day as we drive onto the campus can be for us an “outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.” I pray that our lives as a community will reflect that inward grace and will reflect our gratitude for all we have been given here at St. Thomas.

S in STEAM is for SCIENCE Overview of Science at St. Thomas
Last year kindergarten and 1st grade students studied science in their homeroom classrooms, visited the Environmental Science room for exciting learning experiences, and received special visits from our STEM specialist. In 2nd through 4th grade, students had regularly scheduled Environmental Science and STEM Science classes. Fifth graders covered the entire science curriculum in their science lab. And now for more description of these programs…
Environmental Science – Continuing a Renowned Tradition Everglades and Environmental Studies at St. Thomas began decades ago. The current program, designed by Andi Oldham, has continued the spirit of innovation central to STEAM. Beginning with South Florida’s own ecosystems, students learn environmentally responsible ways of living. The program provides hands-on experiences both on campus and off campus. In recent years, the 4th grade Garden Project and the Fairchild Challenge have furthered the integrated curriculum.
5th Grade Science – An Evolving Model

In keeping with the STEM/STEAM concept, last year science teacher Fran Rosen added more technology to her curriculum. When students studied cells, for example, they were given websites to consult in order to label plant and animal cells and learn their functions. To understand cells as working units, they compared cells to other working units in the world around them. Using software like Minecraft and Floorplanner, they constructed models of various working units to demonstrate the functions of the various parts of the cell. At the end of the school year, plans were in place for 5th grade science to add earth science, physical science, and more engineering to life science.
New Ventures in Science in 2013 – The STEM Vision Science Department Head and STEM Specialist Barb Gosney designed a curriculum in the fall of 2013 that wove together space education with the Next Generation Science Standards. Physics and chemistry, for example, were supported with materials from NASA. Students sat in desk groups with the team names of the International Space Station, like Tranquility, Leonardo, Columbus, Harmony, Cupola. In addition to school-day STEM classes, Ms. Gosney began an after-school program, STEM - It’s a Girl Thing. During the school day, when students worked on a project to “colonize Mars,” professionals who are women in STEM-related careers came as speakers, including architect Jackie Gonzalez Touzet. NASA engineer Kelley Jones came to talk about her role at NASA and her evolution into becoming an aerospace engineer.
The Moon Came to Class
Students prep the beds for the 4th Grade Garden.
On loan from NASA for several weeks, lunar rocks and soil samples were delivered to St. Thomas last January. Students studied the rocks as part of their STEM curriculum about the moon and outer space. In preparation for the arrival of the moon rocks, students studied the moon through the Moon Globe app and watched NASA videos. Students from junior preschool through 5th grade had the rare opportunity of seeing actual pieces of the lunar surface.

T in STEAM is for TECHNOLOGY Glance at the Past St. Thomas has been a leader in elementary school technology since 1982 when headmistress Shirlee Stradley purchased six Commodore computers and introduced 5th and 6th graders to the new world of computer technology. In the late ‘90s, the Laptop program for 5th and 6th graders was another bold move into the future of educational technology for elementary students. In the last decade, St. Thomas has grown so accustomed to technology in education that students and parents assume the presence of Smart Boards, ceiling-mounted projectors, scanners, document cameras, and color printers along with Computer Lab classes and laptops.
And Now… Another step was taken in 2013 with the naming of Stacy Lopez as Educational Technology Integrator. Mrs. Lopez is a former 4th grade teacher and was involved with the laptop program. She works with all students in grades K through 5, but her primary work is in enhancing the programs in grades K through 3, the pre-laptop grades. Training faculty members how to integrate technology into their classroom curriculum with the addition of iPads, Mrs. Lopez works with teachers to design creative, exciting ways for students to research and present material. She arranges Apple training for teachers in the use of educational apps. Last year younger students had time in the Computer Lab each week, availability to iPads with apps like Puppet Pals and 30 Hands in the classroom, and teachers trained to guide in doing research, collaboration, and presentation.
K through 5 – Project Based Learning In addition to making the transition from K through 3 to the Laptop program more seamless, Mrs. Lopez assisted in the design of Project Based Learning (PBL) for all grades. Assuming that students are more highly motivated when they produce a question rather than when the teacher poses the question, PBL equips teachers to move “off the stage” and “into the center” with the students. They act as mentors as students pursue research and collaboration rather than as managers of their learning.
Behind the Scenes in Technology For St. Thomas students to pursue the integrated curriculum in the STEM/STEAM approach, continual monitoring and upgrading of the technology infrastructure must go on behind the scenes. Last year the school took giant steps forward. According to technology director Eddy Mederos, “The goal is a hybrid environment at St. Thomas. By the time children have gone through grades K-5, they will be comfortable with both Apple and Windows technology and will be fully equipped for both the educational and the professional worlds ahead.” In the fall of 2013, all teachers were given iPads. The initial iPad program trained 1st and 2nd graders as well as students in STEM classes and the Center for Excellence to use iPads. Plans were made to move 4th and 5th graders from laptops to Microsoft Surface tablets to provide continuity in using touchscreens. The first Tekboard – which combines a Smart Board, a computer that runs Windows 8.1, all apps, and a camera – came to St. Thomas last spring. To support the Internet use of the new iPads, six additional Meraki Wireless Access Points were mounted in the walls, one between every two classes using iPads. These give 150 feet of wireless access in each direction. The broadband speed was also upgraded with a switch to Comcast, making Internet access faster than DSL. Digital phones replaced analog phones also, providing new diverse features including remote access. The faster and better technology actually saved money rather than adding expense.

E in STEAM is for Engineering The World of Robots at St. Thomas
Robots have been coming to life at St. Thomas since 1999 when the Lego League was designed for middle school students and Tom Bales—scientist, parent, and board chair—decided that St. Thomas students could also master Lego Robotics. With an engineering degree from M.I.T. and a career in bio-medical engineering, Tom had previously worked with inner-city high school students to interest them in engineering through robotics. Tom believed in all the educational characteristics of Robotics: the activities are hands-on and team-based, and they require collaborative work for problem solving. And so he started the after-school Robotics program for older St. Thomas students. Some years later, he and fellow scientist Kevin Smith provided the initial vision, sponsorship, and funding for the STEM program and The Symbiosis STEM Lab.
The Robotics Program in 2013-14 Teachers Lea Crawford, Natasha Dolan, and Barb Gosney, along with Tom Bales, ran the Robotics program in the Math Lab two afternoons a week last year. Fourth and 5th graders could participate the entire year, with 3rd graders beginning in January. Using Vex I.Q. robots designed for the STEM concept of integrated curriculum, students began by designing the base of their robots. After they drew the bases on plywood, the teacher (with sharp tools that the students cannot use) cut out the bases. Students then attached battery packs, wheels, and radio controls. They built up the sides of their robots, keeping them each under one pound. Some attached a spinning sword blade for Robotics Cage Match competition. In this end-of-the-year event, robots are put into a cage for two-minute BattleBots competition. Competitors try to push each other’s robots down a trap door in the floor of the cage in order to win. The engineering skills, collaboration, team work, creativity, and critical thinking required make Robotics a perfect example of the STEM approach.
Engineering in Science Classes The science program is an intentional integration of the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The engineering component involves hands-on activities. Second graders in their STEM lab, for example, studied tornadoes in a weather unit, and each built a tornado out of a liter bottle. With water and debris in the bottle (and tiny plastic objects if they wished), they learned to shake the bottle into a spin so they could see the vortex form with the violent effect of a tornado. In 3rd grade, the study of Newton’s Laws of Motion resulted in rockets made from 1- or 2-liter bottles, duct tape, clay taped inside for a center of gravity, and fins on the outside for direction. With water sealed in the bottom, the rockets were pumped with air to create enough pressure to shoot them off from a specially-built stand. In 4th grade, kinetic and potential energy came to life as each student made a Rube Goldberg machine that contained four sequences of motion. A display and demonstration of all machines took place in Rantz Hall in December for parents to see. Not only in the after-school Robotics program, but in all grade levels of science classes, engineering skills have entered the curriculum.

A in STEAM is for the ARTS Art in the Very Beginnings of Curriculum Integration
In 2008, Great Art Day featured an eco-art project led by nationally recognized Xavier Cortada. The west wall of the courtyard became an artistic display of mangrove seedlings, an eco-art project to reforest our coastal areas. About the time that art was combined with environmental science in that project, teacher Evans Crews moved from the kindergarten to the art classroom. There she designed a new art program based entirely on integrated curriculum.
The Four Cs in Art Class Long before the “Four Cs” were identified as the basic skills needed for the 21st century, Mrs. Crews’ art students were practicing them without knowing the labels. Critical thinking—students start projects with planning, sketching, cutting, testing. Collaboration—many art projects are collaborative efforts by the entire class or by a student group. Creativity—the basic project starts with the teacher’s direction, but, says Mrs. Crews, “Some of the very best ideas I’ve gotten for art have come from my students, when they like the idea of what I’ve suggested but want to take it in a different direction. I always say, ‘Okay, let’s try it that way.’” Communication—many of the art projects involve symbols, logos, and shapes that require explanation to other students.
Art Projects Integrated with Classroom Curriculum Kindergarten science includes a unit on Pets versus Wild Animals. The website of the National Gallery of Art offers an interactive jungle using Henry Rousseau’s jungle paintings. Using technology, art, and collaboration, Mrs. Evans’ students work together to create a jungle. Then, using oils and watercolors, each student creates animals and cuts them out. In the computer lab, each child creates his or her own jungle background and adds the cut-out animals. The project seems so logical and exciting that it would be easy to miss the fact that it is a major integration of science, technology, and art. First grade’s Community Project in social studies focuses on places and institutions in the local community. For art class, children bring photographs of the places they have chosen (and visited with the help of their parents). They make paper blueprints of the standing sculptures representing the places, and then make and paint the wooden sculptures. Second grade’s ceramic looms and actual weaving accompany the social studies unit of Life on the Prairie, and third grade’s Cave Art projects (pictographs and petroglyphs) accompany a classroom history unit on Prehistoric Times. Math and science are integrated with art in projects like Cardinals in the Snow as kindergarteners study shapes in math and habitats in science. Symmetry is critical in the 3rd grade Mask Project that accompanies Native American studies, and measurement and proportion play an important role in the 5th grade self-portrait sculptures. For every child in every art class, art is yet another dimension of a subject or subjects that have been introduced in the classroom, and frequently, both the research for the art project and the presentation depend on the use of technology.

M in STEAM is for MATH
5th Grade Math
After a year of study in 2011-12 by the Math Committee, the series Math in Focus using Singapore Math methodology was chosen for St. Thomas. Singapore Math begins with a concrete approach, moves to the pictorial, and ends with the abstract. Rather than beginning with a workbook, children begin with concrete objects and learn to “see, do, and draw a picture for themselves,” says Carolina Karam, 5th grade math teacher. Although memorization is still needed, students learn different strategies that help them understand fact families.
In the “Real-Life Project” that continued throughout most of the year, students identified jobs they found interesting. Guided to career websites for their research, they applied for and landed jobs and then received salaries (imaginary but in real numbers) deposited into their accounts every 15 days. Using Microsoft Excel, they managed checking and saving accounts, calculating what percentage of their salaries should go for rent, for health care, and for income taxes. Using actual websites for Miami real estate, they learned the cost of renting and explored money-saving possibilities, like finding roommates. The entire year of 5th grade math (place values, decimals, percentages, negative numbers, etc.) corresponds with life in the real world, and at the same time, this approach integrates math, technology, and language skills.
New Directions of Singapore Math
Singapore Math Begins in Kindergarten
Beginning the year with an ice-breaker activity, students competed to construct the tallest structure consisting of dry spaghetti and tape, with the assistance of one hand of one team member holding part of the structure together – a collaborative engineering project. In the pre-algebra unit, students created algebra comic strips that followed specific guidelines. Math, language, and technology come together in algebra comics.
Carla O’Connor, Lower School Division Head, described the starting point of Singapore Math: “In kindergarten, children begin building a foundation in math skills. Through multifaceted lessons and using a multisensory approach, they learn key math concepts. The kindergarten curriculum is designed to enable students to master the basics of counting, sorting, and number sense through discovery, exploration, and application.”
Math Lab Integrated with Math Class and Other Subjects When 1st through 4th graders attend the Math Lab, their classroom math is furthered by real-world connections and hands-on activities. Second graders studying solid shapes photographed examples and then used toothpicks, straws, and pipe cleaners to build shapes. Natasha Dolan, head of the Math Lab, says that “without thinking ‘engineering, math, design,’ they are experiencing the integration of concepts from these various fields.” When they studied money in math class, they opened a checking account, made deposits, and cashed checks. The Product Day Sale connected the math unit to the social studies unit on producers and consumers. In art class they made wallets, and at home each student created ten products to sell. Students had multiple opportunities to be producers and consumers. “Cross Country Math,” a project that Mrs. Dolan collaborated on with 4th grade teacher Susan Crossin, involved a series of tasks that helped students make connections between math concepts and the real world. After studying probability, for example, students “visited” Las Vegas to determine the probability of winning.
Math Night
The Math Lab is a natural part of the Symbiosis STEM Lab, where tables, chairs, and desks are all on wheels so that when floor space is needed or when collaborative groups need to be formed, the room can be reconfigured in an instant. Tables and chairs can be raised and lowered for multiple uses. STEM Labs are designed to encourage continual creativity and collaboration.

The Diamond Jubilee weekend last November, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of St. Thomas School, began with a Friday evening party to honor alumni, parents, clergy, teachers, and administrators from past years. Saturday’s Carnival continued the birthday party theme for today’s families. On Sunday, the Celebration Mass was led by three bishops who have been intimately involved with the school. Returning heads of school and clergy processed and were seated in the chancel along with local dignitaries. The school’s Chapel Choir joined the adult Parish Choir to create an exquisite blend of children’s and adults’ voices. In the glorious celebration weekend, individuals and families from the past and present gathered to express their gratitude to St. Thomas School.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Naming Opportunity in the Capital Campaign The $1,000,000 naming opportunity of the new field became part of the Securing Our Future capital campaign – and a SURPRISE for Mrs. Finneran! Contributions to Finneran Field could go to the endowment side or the capital side of the campaign. In addition to funding the ongoing maintenance of the field and the dedication plaque, donations to the capital side will be used for other parts of the campaign such as landscaping the grounds with native tropical trees and shrubs, providing shade structures over student playgrounds and lunch area, updating the Old Rectory to provide a support system for the playing fields, and redesigning the courtyard to prevent flooding of the church.
FINNERAN FIELD
Major Goal of Securing Our Future Campaign for 2013-14 School Board and Vestry Honor Kitty Finneran How does a school honor a person who, over a period of 34 years, served as the physical education director, then the guidance counselor, and then the associate head? Kitty Finneran’s St. Thomas career started in 1980 with life out on the play field as she made P.E. fun for children. Trustees of the school along with Vestry members of the church agreed that the most appropriate way to honor Mrs. Finneran would be to name the beautiful new play field “Finneran Field.” In 1980, the P.E. program focused on three sports – basketball, baseball, and soccer – with the equipment closet holding several basketballs, a few red balls, softballs, bats, cones, and bases. Within a year, Mrs. Finneran was developing a comprehensive physical education program. Initial acquisitions included a used parachute (to work the upper body with waves and bouncing balls and “Jaws” games), 60 bean bags (for 60 children at a time), and 60 red balls. Within a few years, she was managing a full program of sports plus skill-based, developmental activities. “Most important of all I taught,” she says, “was how to respect each other. We ended each class by passing hands, looking at each other, and saying, ‘Good game.’” Field Day and Spirit Day were creations of Mrs. Finneran, and during the years when the school had Greek Day, she learned to teach Greco-Roman wrestling from Fr. Tobin, who had wrestled for his high school and college teams.

Hard Work to Meet Deadline
Co-chairs of Securing Our Future Amy and Jeff Steinhour worked tirelessly with Linda Johnson in the Advancement Office to meet the May 23rd deadline of raising $1 million for the dedication of Finneran Field. The deadline was met and the amount was exceeded, and on a beautiful South Florida morning in May, in a celebratory chapel service honoring Mrs. Finneran, the announcement was made – Finneran Field would be a permanent tribute to the spirit of Kitty Finneran at St. Thomas. The entire student body, parents, returning alums, alum parents, and other guests exited the sanctuary and gathered again on Finneran Field to cheer and applaud a much loved and appreciated coach, counselor, and administrator.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Daisy Blanchard and Karen Kennedy-Ortiz, Co-Presidents
Fund Raisers and Fun Raisers In addition to the Gala, the Parents’ Association again sponsored the Tennis Tournament at Royal Palm Tennis Club and the Golf Tournament at The Biltmore Hotel. Both tournaments donate 100% of their proceeds to financial aid for the school. The Book Fair, whose theme was “Reading is like an OASIS,” broke records for purchases, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the library. The fall and spring Craft Bazaars raised money for the Outreach Program. With a goal of providing a break-even event that is fun for families, the Carnival last year had a “Happy Birthday” theme. It was held in November as part of the 60th Anniversary celebration, scheduled on Saturday, between Friday night’s Alumni Reception and Sunday’s Celebration Mass.

Gala chairs, Auction chairs, and Children’s Art chairs outdid themselves, and the response was 500 guests – an event more than sold out! Karen Kennedy-Ortiz described, “The gala had an all-white theme supplemented by silver and sparkles. When you walked in, you could not believe you were in a tent on a field. Chandeliers, table linens in silver, soft blue lighting, 510 napkin rings sparkling with rhinestones – it was a royal affair.” And, by the way, the Queen of England, who had recently celebrated her own diamond jubilee, made a cameo appearance. The evening, said Daisy Blanchard, “honored traditions of the past and celebrated the future by introducing a new technology – the virtual bid sheet. A new feature was also added, Fund a Need. This year the identified need was raising funds for further implementation of technology integration” (see article on p.12). Every person had a Bid Pal in hand, and $50,000 for technology integration was raised in 12 minutes! Thanks to a video created by Stacy Lopez, education technology integrator, parents could see examples of technology integration at every grade level, and appreciate how exciting and beneficial this addition is to our curriculum.
Parents’ Association events happen on weekends and within the school days. Red Ribbon Week in the fall; the numerous events of the Hospitality Committee throughout the year (Welcome Back Coffees, Grandparents Day, Alumni Day, and the general STEPS PA meetings); Teacher Appreciation Luncheons; Parent University programs; and Field and Spirit Days – help to enrich and enhance the St. Thomas experience for students, parents, grandparents, faculty, and alumni. Last year, Field Day and Spirit Day were designed as tributes to Kitty Finneran, who started them when she was the physical education teacher. The tribute included bringing back the “suitcase race” from the early ‘80s.
Gratitude from the Co-Presidents Co-presidents Daisy Blanchard and Karen KennedyOrtiz expressed gratitude to the team of committees and volunteers that make up the “collaborative, inclusive, responsible, committed” people in the Parents’ Association. And they agreed that Roberta Meyeringh and Joan Sanz are the “magic” that makes the Parents’ Association at St. Thomas unique and wonderful.

OUTREACH – A Major Value at St. Thomas School St. Thomas students, from preschool through 5th grade, learn the value of reaching out to people less fortunate than they are and making significant efforts to help them. Students work in numerous outreach projects throughout the year, and the Fall and Spring Bazaars sponsored by the Parents’ Association raise funds every year for outreach from the school.
Outreach projects sponsored by the school last year:
ior Hannah Hicks
Holy Comforter child with Sen
• St. Francis Coin Drive in October, which raised $4,462 in Caring Coins to sponsor and support children at the Zanmi Beni Children’s Home in Haiti • Thanksgiving Outreach Food Drive, which raised more than $5,000 and purchased Sedanos gift cards for the 100 families at Holy Comforter Daycare Center • Toy Drive for Holy Comforter Daycare Center, which provided Christmas toys for more than 100 children • Hope Tote Toiletry Drive, which provided thousands of donated items needed by homeless men, women, and children at the Miami Rescue Mission • Annual School Uniform/Supply Drive, which collected polo shirts, shorts, and backpacks at the end of the year to distribute through the Chapman Partnership

Student Council and 5th Grade outreach projects: Each year, students present potential outreach recipients and then vote on which will receive contributions from St. Thomas students that year. Students donate money they have made and have “dress down days” to raise funds to contribute. • Shake-a-Leg Foundation - $500 • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - $500 • Paws 4 You Rescue - $500 • Red Cross for Colorado (for wildfire victims) - $631 • Informed Families - $371 • iPads for Soldiers - $700 • Miami Children’s Hospital - $306 • Camillus House (for homeless people) - $479 • Chapman Partnership (for homeless people) - $518 • Kindergarten children at Avocado Elementary School – Christmas stockings • Holy Comforter Episcopal Church (tiling for floors) - $1,000 • Shane Battier’s Take Charge Foundation (helps send kids to college) • Senior Day at Holy Comforter – See box on opposite page about this 5th grade project
Outreach projects sponsored by the church for the whole parish: • 50,000 Meals for Haiti in October, which brought together several Episcopal churches and schools to pack 53,400 dried meal packets for Episcopal schools in Haiti • Feeding the Homeless through the Chapman Partnership, which received people-power from school families including St. Thomas students during the Christmas season • Suited for Success, a parish project which, with help from school moms, delivered more than 300 garments to the Chapman Partnership and helped residents put outfits together

SENIOR DAY AT HOLY COMFORTER A highlight experience in Outreach for 5th graders is the November day at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Little Havana. Fifth grade students board a bus at St. Thomas, carrying grocery bags of food items they will help distribute to neighborhood people who come to the food pantry. After personally giving the grocery bags to people, St. Thomas students spend the day with infants and children in the daycare center – playing with them, reading to them, doing art projects with them – before sharing a pizza lunch with them. The experience of outreach on many levels to people from infants to the elderly confirms to students that they, even when in elementary school, can make a real difference in their community.

CREDITS RETIRING FACULTY Dee Allsman
Dee Allsman retired in December 2013 after 37 years as a St. Thomas teacher. An elementary education major from Missouri, Dee taught 4th grade in Kansas, 3th grade in D.C., and 4th and 5th grades in Miami before coming to St. Thomas. Beginning as the language arts teacher for 5th and 6th graders on “the Wing,” Mrs. Allsman moved to math and stayed there for most of her career. Whether working as a language arts teacher, math teacher, math specialist, or permanent sub for any grade, Mrs. Allsman taught and guided students cheerfully for close to four decades at St. Thomas.
Lea Crawford
Lea Crawford retired in June 2014. With a BS degree in education, Mrs. Crawford taught math, science, and computers during her 33 years at St. Thomas, and for the last 15 years she also worked with the after-school Robotics Program. She was involved in the school’s first computer program when Shirlee Stradley put a computer in the library with a “green-on-green” screen and memory stored on cassette tapes. For years, Mrs. Crawford ran the Computer Lab, which started in a supply closet in the old building, sharing space with the Xerox machine. In her years with the Robotics program, she worked first with Lego robots, then Vex I.Q. robots, and also with the construction of BattleBots for competition.
