Lace Blanket Shawl by Denise Twum

craft: knitting

sizes: one size

difficulty: intermediate

measurements: ~ 33 wide and 68 long

I wanted to showcase my recently acquired lace-knitting skills by making something beautiful and feminine for my mother. Looking through a few knitting books, I got inspired to put four lace patterns together. The edges of the small afghan are worked in one lace pattern, and the main body is three lace panels worked at the same time to give a highly textural blanket that is beautiful to look at and warm to snuggle under. 1

stitch guide: KnitPicks Swish Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 110 yd[101m ]/1.76 oz [50gm]; CYCA 4): Dove Heather, 11 skeins. US size 8 (5mm) 24” (or longer) circular needle Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge. 8 Stitch markers (m); tapestry needle

gauge: 17sts and 26 rows = 4” in Chevron Rib pattern pre-blocking 14 sts and 23 rows = 4” in Chevron Rib pattern post-blocking. To make swatch: With your needles, cast on 31 sts. Knit 7 rows in moss stitch pattern. Knit 8 repeats of the Chevron Rib patt, keeping 5 sts on each side in the moss stitch pattern. Knit 7 rows in moss stitch pattern and bind off. Block lightly. Measure between the two moss stitch borders to get gauge for the Chevron Rib Pattern. Notes: This pattern is made up of four easy lace panels, with three of the lace panels worked simultaneously in the center section. Please read through the pattern completely before beginning.

The Chevron Rib Pattern is from Classic Elite Yarns: Make it Modern book, and the Knotted Openwork, Moss Stitch Diamond Panel and Lacy Diagonals are all from Harmony Guides Lace & Eyelets: 250 Stitches to Knit, edited by Erika Knight.

Original design by Denise Twum Denise was introduced to knitting by her supervisor while working at her college’s science library in 2006. Knitting kept her company as she traveled to five countries for a year of independent research, and she’s been addicted ever since. You will most likely find her watching a lengthy Bollywood movie or Korean drama while knitting. You can email her at niseyknits@gmail.com and keep up with her knitting exploits at www.niseyknits.com.

Continue working the pattern as established, slipping the markers when you come to them. Work until rows 1 - 30 of the Moss Stitch Diamond Panel have been worked 7 times. 4
