MYSTERY TOUR (continued): • American poet Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious circumstances in 1849. Even more mysterious, however, is the “Poe Toaster” – a person who has come to Poe’s grave every year since 1949. The Toaster arrives in the early hours of every January 19, drinks a toast to Poe’s memorial, and then leaves the half-filled bottle of cognac – and three roses – on the grave. While nosy reporters have since discovered the secret behind the act, it deserves to remain a mystery. • Columbo was not only a top-notch detective TV show, but do you know Lieutenant Columbo’s first name? When the character was confronted with the question on the show, he simply answered “Lieutenant.” Actor Peter Falk coyly dodged the question in interviews. But what Columbo’s producers hadn’t counted on was advancements in technology. When the first season of Columbo was released on DVD, eagle-eyed viewers quick enough with the “pause” button were able to freeze-frame a scene where the Lieutenant presented his badge and ID card, which indicated that his first name was Frank. • Mystery writer Agatha Christie “vanished” for two weeks in 1926. Rumors persisted that she’d been kidnapped, but it was later revealed that she’d checked into a health spa to contemplate her crumbling marriage. • “Elementary, my dear Watson” is a statement commonly associated with Sherlock Holmes, but the sleuth never uttered that phrase in any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels. The quote was adapted from this exchange (told from Watson’s point of view) from The Crooked Man: “I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson,” said he. “When your round is a short one you walk, and when it is a long one you use a hansom.” “Excellent!” I cried. “Elementary,” said he. • Several “Mystery Hill” tourist attractions are scattered throughout the United States. They dazzle the senses by showing water flowing uphill, chairs balancing precariously on two legs on a narrow ledge against a wall, and other similarly mystifying feats. Despite the explanation given by the tour guide (“extreme magnetic forces due to the concentration of quartz deposits in the ground”), the reality is that it is all an optical illusion. Said attractions are built on a steep incline with an obscured view of the horizon, which combine to confuse the eyes and the brain. continued

“Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells that are found in our inner ear. Hair cells are small sensory cells that convert the sounds we hear (sound energy) into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Once damaged our hair cells cannot grow back, causing permanent hearing loss,” explains Le’Anne McEachern, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology at Coast Hearing Services. Watch for more suggestions next week on how you can protect you ability to hear. October is National Disabilty month.

The 21st Century After School Program aims to enrich and reinforce the educational experience for kindergarten through 8th Grade students throughout Lincoln County School District. Through enrichment classes and special presentations, students are offered the opportunity to see academic content differently; through everyday applications or through interactive activities which are sometimes difficult for teachers to take on in limited time or space. The Waldport 21st Century After School Program currently offers students opportunities to learn social skills through a LEGO Lab, reading and writing skills in Reading & Writing Happy Hour and Writer’s Club, as well as developing athletic and teamwork skills through Stretching & Yoga and Basketball Skills classes. To join the Waldport 21st Century After School Program, adults must register their children. Registration forms are available at Crestview Heights School, at the Waldport Community Learning Center Office, or by calling Melaia Kilduff, 21st Century After School Program Coordinator at 563-3476. Scholarships are available to Crestview Heights students. -------------------------------> Photo 2 “Curtis Greg” is Curtis King- 3rd Grade and Greg Myers- High School Cadet Teacher doing an experiment in “Radical Reactions” lab activity

Gold Star Wives Fight for Widow Benefits

Gold Star Wives is a veterans service organiza tion made up of women who have suffered the ultimate sacrifice -- the death of a military spouse. There are two qualifications to be in this group: a spouse who was killed while on active duty, or who died while having 100 percent service-connected disabilities. The greatest good the group has done has been with benefits for the families that are left behind. Over the years, those benefits have been included, then excluded, then included again in budgets by Congress. After World War II, widows who remarried were told that, should the second marriage end, they would be unable to regain those benefits. In 1970 that was quietly changed, but many spouses who had remarried were never told that they could regain their benefits. Without warning, in 1990, those benefits disappeared once again, leaving many spouses in the lurch when a second marriage ended. And once again, those benefits were quietly reinstated in 1999. Still another change was instituted in 2003: Women whose spouses died either in service to the country or with a 100 percent service-connected disability may remarry after the age of 57 without loss of benefits. To this point, a spouse who remarries may also be eligible for CHAMPVA medical benefits, as well as property-tax reductions and commissary card. If you're in the group that lost benefits at some point, contact the VA to reactivate your case. And by all means, contact Gold Star Wives for help in determining your benefits status. In fact, it should be your first call. Direct Express Change Could Affect You

When the Direct Express program was rolled out in January, I was all for it. Direct Express is the debit card for those who receive Social Security and SSI benefits. The money automatically appears on the card at the beginning of each month, and the card is used like a regular debit card -- even if the recipient doesn't have a bank. For those who signed up early, there's been a change. JPMorgan Chase, one of the banks issuing the card, is no longer under contract with the Treasury Department. Comerica Bank now has the contract. Anyone who had Direct Express with JPMorgan Chase should have received a letter saying the program was coming to an end in September. If you never received your letter, here are some steps to protect your money: ¥ Spend all the money on the JPMorganChase card (no further deposits will be made there), or have the money directed to a regular Chase account (877-7895895). ¥ Make new arrangements for where you want the money to go, and tell Social Security (1-800-7721213). If you didn't make arrangements by the cutoff date (when your October benefits are due to be paid), that money was sent back to Social Security. ¥ Open a Direct Express card account with the new company, Comerica Bank, or arrange for the money to go into a regular account elsewhere. If you want direct deposit to your own bank, call the Treasury's Go Direct call center toll-free at 1-800-333-1795. For those of us with a bank account, there's something to be said for plain old direct deposit at a bank we're already using, perhaps where we've had an account for many years.
