Tradition Vs Family Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the holidays We forget that the most important part is not that every tradition gets preformed in a certain way, rather the most important part of the holidays is our families. Spending time together and renewing acquaintances and friendships. Take time to make special quality memories with your loved ones. If you still have children in the house be sure and find a way to make each feel treasured. When I was first going to psychology class I was amazed that the holidays is one of the highest times for children and adults to suffer severe depression and suicide was higher. The holidays are also one of the very important times to treat yourself. This does not have to be expensive if your pocket book is feeling a crunch. It can be as simple as taking time to walk on the beach, read a book, take a trip down memory lane with family photos or home movies, whatever makes you feel good and gives you comfort. This is also an important time to make your spouse or significant other know that you still consider them as your best choice. There is a treasured feeling to know that if picking again, you are still the one they would pick! It is important to take time to really appreciate the holidays. Families are getting together for Holidays. This year the holidays will have more of a flair for the tradition al of our younger years. We will be getting back to basics and though the gas prices are going to be low enough to travel, we are becoming more conscientious of our budgets, so many of us will be close to home. I hope everyone plays games and have wonderful family dinners and remember how it much fun it really is with family and friends. I want to share with everyone how grateful I am to have wonderful clients and great relationships with the so many people in our area. I have lot to be thankful for including my family and friends, and those that have lifted me up in my venture of going on my own. Although I am independent it takes a team and with out skilled professionals my success would not have prevailed. But the most important players are my clients and I truly appreciate you. Everyday the news is broadcasting something that needs fixed by the government and the taxpayers. Bad news makes for great journalism, but it is not all bad. There is light at the end of the tunnel and we will be the ones to make that light - each of us in our own way. It is possible for us to be able to have what we strive for. I will say it again that owning your own home is a possibility and to be pro-active in your preparation for that day. There are many opportunities that may be available even now. Maybe there is a need for a larger home, or to be closer to work and schools. I suggest that you visit one of the many talented realtors in our area and let them share their expertise and information with you. Perhaps the first home may not be the one you live in; perhaps it will be an investment property. Perhaps you know someone looking for a second home – we have beautiful countryside views and ocean, lakes and rivers in the area. We have moderate weather and friendly people and a perfect place to be. Property is always a good investment – yes values may go up & down – but generally up and when property is taken care of - it can take care of you. Visit with the realtors and see what they can share with you. It is possible to co-own or co-borrower with another party. It does not have to be family. There are loans that allow multiple borrowers to own property. There are also loans that allow parents or adult children to partner in a home purchase and it is not considered an investment or rental as long a one person lives in the home. Walking for Exercise Has Fringe Benefit Now that cold weather is here again, my mall walking group has had to move indoors. Three mornings a week we meet at the local shopping center where management opens the doors early for us. The level floors and good lighting make it a safe environment, and if we follow a certain route, we end up walking a mile. Having a warm location (as well as benches to sit on if we need to rest) has even allowed one of our members who’s on oxygen to join us for part of the time. Walking for exercise comes with all kinds of benefits, most of which have been proven by studies. When we walk, we lower our risk for cancer, boost our brain power, increase bone strength, reduce the risk of dementia, promote better sleep and generally live longer, healthier lives. I’ve found that the best thing about walking, however, is how I feel afterward. There’s something about getting those “feelgood” endorphins going that seems to put a feeling of well-being on the whole day. (Which is why I prefer to walk in the mornings.) Endorphins act like nature’s painkillers. Just when I thought I knew all there was to know about walking, along comes something new: Chi Walking. Chi (pronounced “chee”) Walking incorporates proper posture, especially of the spine, shoulders, hips and knees. Relaxed movements appear to be the key to getting more benefits from walking. DEAR K.H.S.: Normally, when a dog appears to be “smiling” he either really is baring his teeth (and growling, which is [SET ITAL]not[END ITAL] a happy sound) to warn someone off, or his demeanor -- slightly open mouth, tongue hanging out and a general air of happiness -- makes one think he is smiling even if it’s not a genuine “human” smile. But I thought that an experienced owner saying that a dog was actually smiling was unusual, so I looked up some information on the breed. And indeed, the Borzoi (or Russian Wolfhound) has this neat little trait: The submissive gesture for this gentle giant of a dog is to curl back his lips and expose his teeth. The “smile” on a Borzoi looks so much like a snarl that most strangers will quickly back away. So, kudos to you on bringing Frank around, from a shy abuse victim to a loving companion who returned to the natural behaviors of a Borzoi: lounging on the couch and enjoying the company of his family.
