The infant’s mouth is more or less its window to the world for the first four or five months of life. It’s completely normal, therefore, that when a baby first discovers his toes, its first instinct is to put them in its mouth. • Tinea pedis is a fungal infection of the skin of the foot. The condition wasn’t well-known until 1923, when advertising copywriter Arthur Kudner began work on a new account for a product called Absorbine, Jr. The brand-name medication was effective in treating the symptoms of Tinea pedis, but that Latin name just wasn’t commercial enough. Since sports locker rooms were major transmission points for the fungus, Kudner came up with a new, easy-toremember name for the condition: “athlete’s foot.” • Ladies? Miss Manners and other etiquette experts tell us that it is a fashion no-no to wear any type of hosiery with open-toe shoes or sandals. More importantly, sandals are designed to be worn barefoot, and socks or nylons might cause the foot to slide around with each step, which could lead to blisters. • The most famous sighting of the legendary Bigfoot was captured on a 16mm film shot by Roger Patterson in 1967. Thirty-seven years later, Bob Heironimus admitted to being paid to wear a fur costume and appear in the Patterson film. He said that he had been promised $1,000 to don a gorillatype suit and a football helmet covered with fake fur and pose for a few minutes of film footage. He also claims that he was never paid! • Abebe Bikila of Ethiopa was a last-minute replacement on his nation’s Olympic marathon team. Adidas, the official shoe sponsor of the 1960 Summer Games, had a limited supply of shoe sizes left by the time Bikila arrived in Rome. None of the proffered shoes fit him properly. He chose to run the marathon barefoot instead, which was how he’d trained for the race at home. Did he finish? In fact, Bikila ran the race in a record time of 2:15:16.2, becoming the first black to win an Olympic gold medal for an African nation. (continued)

Getting Ready for Salmon Season By Rick Rader It’s time to get out all that salmon gear once again polish those lures and pick out your favorites. Get your elbows sharpened as the rivers get more and more fisherman every year, some times it gets a little crowded. Word is the salmon have been reported to be trickling in on the Siletz river. So its a good idea to take a look at your local fish and game web site for fishing regulation updates. It’s not always a good idea to trust your regulation manuals as laws sometimes change with little notice; salmon being one of them.
Why go fishing--Just for the fun of it! A few Famous Fishing Quotes “Creeps and idiots cannot conceal themselves for long on a fishing trip.” ~ John Gierach “A trout is a moment of beauty known only to those who seek it.” ~ Arnold Gingrich “Somebody just back of you while you are fishing is as bad as someone looking over your shoulder while you write a letter to your girl.” ~ Ernest Hemingway “To go fishing is the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of sun on blue water. It brings meekness and inspiration from the decency of nature, charity toward tackle-makers, patience toward fish, a mockery of profits and egos, a quieting of hate, a rejoicing that you do not have to decide a darned thing until next week. And it is discipline in the equality of men - for all men are equal before fish.” ~ Herbert Hoover Hey Guys & Gals, Here is your chance to Strut your stuff! Email your stories, (keep it clean this is a family paper) jokes, riddles & photos or tips. Send it to P.O. Box 848 Siletz, OR 97380 or email to: LuSwart@denlupublishingLLC.com or call Lu at 541-921-7281
Remember when and if you see someone take an illegal fish, if your an avid sportsman you will turn them in immediately, by calling your state police or by dialing 911. Together we can all protect our salmon population, after all its not fair to you either. Here is a link where you can check for updates on your local laws for fishing http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ Remember be friendly to each other out there on the rivers, we all go salmon fishing for the fun and rush of hooking into that big one, so while your trying to catch that record fish - while your home sick in bed from work - just have fun that’s what we all want to begin with. Good luck Rick Rader Your local fishing fanatic.

FEET FIRST (continued): • That big, shiny, silver contraption used by shoe stores to measure your foot is called a Brannock device. It was invented in 1927 by Charles Brannock, who constructed a prototype using an Erector set. Brannock’s invention met with a lukewarm reception until the U.S. military began to employ it to quickly fit soldiers with the appropriate boot size. • Can flat feet keep you out of the military draft? It depends. If you require special footwear or orthotics (or have used them in the past), you would likely be disqualified from military service. Miles of marching on flat feet (technically called pes planus) can cause back injuries, tendon damage and shin splints. And, honestly, Uncle Sam doesn’t want to spend money training individuals who will likely suffer injuries as the result of a medical condition such as flat feet. • Once a baby is able to pull himself up into a standing position, some parents think it’s time to spend many hours (and many dollars) buying the “right” shoe for the little one. But when it comes to infant footwear, the correct shoe isn’t based on color or brand name; it’s all about proper fit. The bones in a baby’s feet are very soft, and they grow at a very rapid rate. Shoes that are too tight or illfitting can distort natural foot growth. • Why do we say “foot the bill” when referring to the party financially responsible for something? In the world of accounting, to “foot” a column means to total up the numbers at the bottom of a ledger. Language experts believe that this use of “foot” evolved from another meaning for the word, that of the base or bottom of something (like the foot of a ladder). FEET FIRST (continued): • In Islamic countries, it is considered a sign of respect to keep both feet squarely on the floor while seated. It is particularly insulting to cross one’s legs ankle-over-the-knee style, as the foot is considered to be unclean. And don’t ever point the sole of your foot at someone – it’s perceived as an insult. • Diabetics must take special care to monitor their foot health. The disease may cause nerve damage or restrict the blood flow, particularly in the legs and feet. As a result, something as simple as a blister might become infected. The patient, due to loss of feeling in the foot, might not feel any discomfort until serious damage has been done. • When we “put our foot down” it means that we are taking a firm position on a particular matter and we won’t be changing our mind any time soon. The history of this phrase refers back to childhood, a time when youngsters express their outrage and onemindedness by literally stomping an angry foot on the ground. • In addition to the many other changes an expectant mother’s body undergoes, she also has to worry about her feet. The combination of weight gain and the change in the natural “center of balance” alters the way a pregnant woman walks. This leaves her susceptible to pain in the heel, arch, and ball of the foot. Over-the-counter orthotics are available to soothe the mom-to-be’s feet during this time; ask a doctor or pharmacist for assistance.

Q: Maybe you can help me. I got my dog from Animal Control four years ago. “Terry” is a SchnauzerTerrier mix and was quite hyper, but is starting to calm down. She can be kind of strange at times. Not only does she squat to urinate, she will lift her leg. I’ve never seen a female do that before. Also, as many times as she urinates outside, she ends up going inside during the night. Do you have any idea why she might do that? -- Loretta, via e-mail A: I’m not sure why Terry both squats and lifts her leg to pee, but I have seen females do this before. So, let’s chalk it up to preference for now. The indoor, overnight urination and frequent urination during the daytime does concern me. You should take Terry to the veterinarian to rule out a urinarytract infection or other physical problem such as kidney disease. Try to note any other out-of-the-ordinary actions for the vet: Does she drink a lot of water? Has she lost weight? Does her coat look dull or patchy? Does she appear distressed when urinating? If Terry’s health checks out, the next step is modifying her schedule and habits a bit. Small dogs have small bladders, so add a couple of extra trips outside daily -- just before you go to bed late at night, and the absolute first thing in the morning. To discourage

peeing, she should sleep in an enclosed space -- a room or gated-off area -- with her doggie bed, toys and water. Also reduce the amount of water in her bowl overnight -- about a cup should do. If the nighttime urination isn’t resolved, add a pee pad to the enclosed sleep area and train Terry to use it. But continue to adhere to her walk schedule. As Terry becomes accustomed to the schedule, she should become less prone to go at night. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Walmart’s manager Ron West and I meet this week & I learned more about who Ron West is. Ron has been an employee of Walmart for 14 years. He started as a cart pusher. He moved to Newport in April 2007. He came to Newport after being promoted from Colorado Springs, CO. Ron and his wife Chaka have been married for 7 years and have 2 children ages 10 & 6. Ron keeps busy as a board of director member of Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, and Salvation Army as well as belonging to Rotary. I asked Ron what was the best thing about living and working in Lincoln County. His response was, “I love getting to meet the different people everyday. I love the people that I work with. We are at almost 200 days “accident free” They are great. I love the customer service part of my postion and I love Newport and the coast. I love how friendly everyone is.” However I found one area that Ron is lacking in. We need to work on Ron as he says that he is not a Ducks or Beavers fan. He still is a loyal Georgia Bulldogs fan.

Long-Term Care If you want to stay at home if you become ill or disabled, you might have to move to New Mexico, Oregon, Washington or Alaska. That is, if you want Medicaid to pay for your care. AARP's Policy and Research branch recently conducted a study to determine what percentage of Medicaid money the states are spending on long-term athome care. Only those four states spent more than 50 percent of their long-term care money to keep people in their homes in comfortable surroundings. (Change that to 40 percent and you can add three more states: California, Minnesota and Texas.) The rest of the states are spending the bulk of their dollars on institutionalized care. Not only does it cost more, but surveys show that 87 percent of seniors age 50 and older want to be at home. By comparison, for those with developmental disabilities or mental retardation, the majority do receive at-home care, with only 39 percent of the long-term-care spending on institutional care. It makes no sense: If it costs less to keep a senior at home, supported by home and community services, than it does to institutionalize, why don't they spend fewer dollars to keep the senior in comfortable surroundings at home? Fact: For every person in a nursing home, three people can be supported with at-home care. Fact: Between 2001 and 2006, 27 states added more nursing-home money than at-home-care money. There are obstacles, certainly, anytime you're dealing with government rules, especially when it comes to policy about how states are to balance and divide up their Medicaid dollars. But as the AARP report says, it takes a "creative problem-solving attitude that can find innovative ways to work within existing laws." If those states can do it, so can the rest. VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves Veterans Used as Guinea Pigs Veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq have been used as guinea pigs by the Department of Veterans Affairs in drug studies long after it was clear there was a problem. Chantix, typically used as a smoking cessation drug, can cause suicidal thoughts and actions, especially in veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Early on, doctors at the VA became concerned about psychotic episodes, suicides and hallucinations in veterans who were taking Chantix. No warnings were given out, however, and more Chantix was given to veterans in the experiment. In October 2007, based on doctors' concerns, the VA finally decided to do a review. The following month, the Food and Drug Administration warned doctors that it appeared "increasingly likely" that Chantix is associated with "serious neuropsychiatric symptoms."In January 2008, the drug maker Pfizer came out with a warning label. A month later the FDA came out with yet another alert. In late May, the FAA put a ban on air traffic controllers and pilots using Chantix. On the heels of that, the VA decided to send out letters to 32,000 veterans who'd taken Chantix. The letter warned, among other things, about driving or operating machinery. It wasn't until June 18, long after VA doctors first became alarmed, long after the first FDA and Pfizer warnings, that the VA finally sent out letters using the word "suicide" as a possible side effect. After a big expose, the House Veterans Affairs Committee decided to take a close look at the VA's handling of Chantix. End result: Secretary of the VA James Peaks said that the VA would review all drugs given to veterans with PTSD. Why is it that VA officials have to be backed to the wall and dragged before Congress before they do the right thing?
