T
he hotel was assigned to a large outdoor parking lot in downtown Galt, adjacent to an existing boulevard and various aspects of urban fabric. With the parti of a fashion runway, the hotel inspires those who are enamoured with ‘the fame’: glamour, exhibitionism, and l’étalage. The hotel hopes to provide a “New Galt”; future developments and urban density hoping to spark in the downtown core.

Hôtel Étalage is an amazing thirteen storey tower that houses over fifty suites, complete with a full spa, restaurant and a rooftop lounge. A third floor bar is atop a grand crystal spiral staircase, from which one can ascend from the lobby. The terrace adjacent is stepped to provide a tripartite relationship: the runway, the audience, then the pool. The grand park next to the hotel is divided in relation to the existing fabric of Galt. Playgrounds, fields, and sports areas fill these respective divisions. Inspired by Bryant Park in New York, these areas can be easily transformed to host any type of event.

The amenities of the hotel include a full spa and gym for guests and visitors. The spa is fully equipped with changerooms, saunas, massage rooms, and a tranquil yoga patio. It is intended to be a tucked away oasis in Galt. The gym features a fully functioning juice bar as well as a complete view of the pool in the terrace above.

This fashion-forward hotel is illuminated at night by a triple-paned LED projection system to exhibit various textiles and designs during the night. As these designs shift through the night, it is an allusion to the textile industry that existed in Cambridge many years ago; Galt can once more revive its textile roots to showcase to the world.

uring my work term at MCMP, I had the privilege to be invited to work on a competition with a couple of fellow co-workers in the firm. They had entered an urban design competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. Set in the downtown core, the competition asked for proposals in a partially historic district of the city that would revitalise the city life in the area. The two blocks were number sixty-nine and seventy, which was the namesake of the competition, SixtyNine|Seventy. Our entry revolved around three notions, or ‘Verses’: a Veil, a ‘Homeric nod’, and the Notion of Time. The three verses act as an agent in opening program in the city, gestures toward Utah’s poetic past, and the reinterpretation of history & memory respectively. Unfortunately, the entry did not place, but I had gained much experience in teamwork and self-direction & motivation.

The execution of this project was to harken back to biblical text and recreate a paradise in the heart of Salt Lake City, a Hanging Garden of Babylon in Utah. With the combination of the veil, hanging ivy and overflowing fountains, the proposal attempts to realise Paradise on Earth.

The overall scheme shows the veil covering the entirety of the site. The heights of vary depending on its historical importance (the Notion of Time) while the opacity of the veil changes based on how space is important to the city (the Homeric Nod) Below is are four site elevations depicting the same idea in orthographic diagrams

My task in this competition was to assist in the execution of this competition entry. With my knowledge in Grasshopper 3D I was able to materialise their desires for the project, as well as giving in my input for what was possible and what was not. Whilst the main parti for the proposal remained the same, with my execution and participation, the project evolved to become a fully realised system. By the end, I was in charge of many of the visualisations including the oversight of diagrammatic styles. The overall rendering was done in Vray for 3DsMAX by one of the group members, then passed off to me for retouching, textures, and realisation of the visual.

my time at MCMP, I mainly worked on two projects, 1090 West Pender and Vancouver Centre II. I was assigned to do many of the visualisations that were needed for client meetings, as well as creating schematic design

drawings of the entire proposal. These drawings included plans, sections and elevations of these office buildings, as well as working on parking proposals and floor area calculations to submit for the City of Vancouver.

In these office projects, there were certain portions such as terraces, penthouses and lobbies often had charettes in which I had participated during my internship. At times, the visualisations that were assigned were not always for presentations with clients, but rather internal

works created for discussion to further the project. With these visualisations, I would have material to further discussions and participate in the design process of the project.

his multi use complex combines Co-operative housing with an Elementary School for the Arts, a Public Library, a fully functioning Theatre, as well as a retail complex that reaches beyond the street into an underground concourse that connects to a future expansion of the PATH network. Underground there are four levels of parking. The development is designed to be a large

A future projection of the site forsees further development of the area to create a bustling part of Toronto, as well as the redevelopment and landscaping of Moss Park.

The Jarvis Public Library is split between the main floor and the first underground floor of the complex. The library is an introverted program placed in the centre of the site. The upper reading room looks into the internal Turkish Garden where its fountain is the skylight of

the Concourse Library below. An internal double-helix staircase leads readers from the main floor to the underground where they can find the lower reading hall as well as the children’s reading area.
The Band Halls are on the top floor of the School, and the halls look upwards to the sky as natural light floods in during practice.
Queen Street School for the Performing Arts is a public school designed for artistically inclined children who wish to nurture their talents for brighter creative futures. The School is fully equipped with Band Halls, Choir Rooms, Dance Studios, Drama Classrooms and
Painting & Sculpting Studios. The School is also fully prepared with a large number of classrooms and Athletics spaces. The main Atrium is a combination-use space between a Cafeteria and a Main Stage for school events.
All the Art Studios face Moss Park, where students can be inspired by the open green space and the urbanity of the The Dance Studios are equipped with floor-to-ceiling city in the background. mirrors and bars for training and practice.

SEE YOU Osservo is a darkroom, and is a theatre of sorts. while there is space for performance, the real spectacle is the people who are walking in the piazza below. Set adjacent to the Piazza di Colosseo in Rome, and inspired by a greek temple, the users of this pavilion watch tourists below as if they are demigods observing the mortal realm. the type of the temple is reversed to create this form and flow of circulation. however, the space is also used to observe one another. a large mirror is suspended over the final grand staircase, displaying the observers in plan as they descend. the ritualistic nature of this pavilion only allows visitors to travel in one direction, with a nonchalant exit that filters through to the backside of the property.

or as long as I can remember, I have always had a pencil in my hand, and a paper before me. I have always loved art, and always loved to draw. In my middle-school years I enrolled in Baythorn Public School`s regional arts program, where I continued to study art, as well as falling in love with theatre and performance. As high school came around, I was accepted into the Arts York program of Unionville High School. There I furthered my craft and finetuned my skills as a fine artist, as well as finding my designer voice. Now that I am enrolled in the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, I truly feel that art is a large portion of who I am as a person and a designer. I continue to apply skills I have learned while studying fine art into my architectural practice.

a continuing thirty-something year tradition, it is compulsory for below: a collage of the armour in combination with the entire costume during every second year class to script, performance compose, design, build and act in photos courtesy of polly auyeung, a theatrical production. Every profelix cheong & victor poon duction centres around a Greek Myth as the theme. For the 2011 edition of University of Waterloo School of Architecture summer production, the theme was the Iliad: Seige of Troy. Starring Andrew Ashbury as Achilles, the Seige of Troy unfolds as it is told by the blind Greek poet Homer (Roksena Nikolova) and the Victorian archeologist Schliemann (Giles Hall). For my part in the production, I directed the costume department with Andreea Toca and also played the supporting lead, Schliemann’s skeptical but helpful right-hand man, Calvert.
