Rectilinear Project Freshman year :1st Project
RECTILINEAR INFLUENCE
DESIGN
DEVELOPING
When I was assigned to find inspiration. I had a hard time on what I should take inspiration because of how new this concept is. After watching a film over the weekend I got inspiration from a tank and also interesting modern building structure. (Concept building) (WW2 Tank)
During the summer I didn’t put the time in practicing sketching, so my creative idea didn’t really translate it to the sketchbook, but since this project is mostly based on blocky “rectilinear” I was still comfortable with the design process. Not just tanks and building. I also played around with many ideas I had over time and had drawn them in my sketchbook. In the end, I decided on one that best represents the inspiration I had. I combine the blocky structure of a modern building and build a tank outline shape of it. Looking back to this may not match the description of the project, but it was a great experience overall.

Since this is the first project of the program. This is also the first time I touch any machine in the shop. From learning new skill about the bandsaw to learning about Bondo to fix the imperfection. The mock-ups portion shown me how important it is to finalize my design. The Rectilinear definitely gives me a good impression on how future project would be like.

Curvilinear Project Freshman year :2nd Project
CURVILINEAR INFLUENCE
DESIGN
DEVELOPING
When this project was introduced to us, I already semiknew what I wanted to do for this project. I wanted to use the racing line of many famous race tracks and design aesthetic from Blade Runner’s police spinner to inspire me in the creation of my curvilinear. I chose these two items because I’m a big fan of the Blade Runner art style, and my love of racing games. In the modeling process, I explore many different iterations. There were problems where my design had too many lines and curve that the foam would get weak and snap, causes the mock-up to loses its shape. At the beginning of the mockup process, there were times that my curvilinear would look like an hourglass, but I changed a couple of aesthetics at the end of the project. This project turns out to be my favorite at the end of the year because of how the model turned out at the end. Throughout my design processes, I had a lot of fun sketching through many different outlines of races tracks to design my curvilinear, from Blade Runner to race tracks around the world. In the end, I combine the famous Circuit de Monaco on the top and Police Spinner as the side to create my final curvilinear. Overall the design process went pretty well without too much of a struggle.

Speed Form Project Freshman year :3rd Project
SPEED FORM INFLUENCE
DESIGN
DEVELOPING
This Project is about speed and for me, it is also mean “FAST” and that inspired me to take images from the fastest transportation and animal in the world to start off this project. It did take me a little bit of time to decide which of the animal I wanted to start this project, but after I watched a video from 99% invisible and Vox about putting nature in design. It inspired me to put the fastest speed train and the fastest bird in the world to be my inspiration.
From the idea of fastest bird and train in the world, I played around the speed form that looks similar to the inspiration. I started looking to many different trains around the world and see which one would combine with the falcon the best. Through many sketches and rendering, I concluded a couple of designs and move on to the modeling process. In this project, one of the biggest things I learned is molding and draft angle. The first initial design of my speed form, the draft angle was not taken into consideration, because my lack of understanding of what draft angle really was so the molding process would not work. But with a couple of changes and fully understand what draft angle was, I successfully found a design that didn’t move away from my initial inspiration. At the end the Project shape turn out great, it might not be the “speediest” one in the class but I’m pretty happy how this project turns out.

The Egg Drop Project Freshman year:4th Project
EGG DROP INFLUENCE
DESIGN
DEVELOPING
In This Project, we’ve been assigned to two other students (John Pham, Sabrina Shell) to work on this project. We started this project off with an individual mock up and then we found the benefits of each one. I started my thinking progress of what human uses to suspend fall damages. I came out with parachute and trampoline as the influence of my idea of how the egg drop would work. We built a couple of prototypes of what we have drawn and reflected the Pros and Cons between one and the other. We also put in new ideas and test it by using a plastic egg shell with clay inside to simulate the weight of a real egg. As we build more ideas and mock-ups we finalize with some of each of our design and started testing by dropping from the table. I started off this project just doing parachute drawing and also ideas of the trampoline separately on the sketchbook, then I find PROS and CONS of each one and include drawings that complement each other. I finalized the idea of egg in the box with trampoline inside to give a suspension to suspend the egg from direct hit to the surface of the egg, and break due to pressures.

MAKING IT!
DROPPING IT!!
From the illustrator file that John build after we finalize our design we started testing with our final model. At first, our design was apparently not structurally sound from the outside with the inside of the box. After a small adjustment and move couple of connecting slot, we manage to give the box a better structure to the box to give a protective layer on the egg. We also decided to protect the egg even more by wrapping the egg around the extra cloth that we use for the parachute.

HANGER INFLUENCE Watching your phones before bed has been a regular event for smartphones users around the world, and that has inspired me to make a nightstand phone hanger. I started to research about a nightstand hanger and bed hanger then I went home and find out where I could suspend my phone next to my bed. I decided to set the phone at the corner of the nightstand.
024 - Cheuk Lui 呂卓恒
DESIGN
I started off sketching a normal nightstand hanger and also trying to make a normal nightstand hang by itself. I start off making hanger using nails as a way to hang the hanger itself, but I found out that many people don’t like the use of nails to hang things as would ruin the wall or the nightstand. So I decided to implement the nail hanger design and slot it to the corner of the table. To be honest I didn’t work on a lot of sketches in this project and I feel like the outcome of my hanger was largely due to my lack of sketching.
DEVELOPING
In the development side, I started off using white cardstock that we brought in the beginning of the 2nd semester and build 20+ mockups trying to create clip assemble and held the shapes together and also finding a way to hang securely on to the nightstand. This Process took a very long time but at the end, I didn’t have enough time to find a solution and went with one of the ideas that were considered. This project teaches me quite a lot and one of the things is assembly creating the shapes using without glue nor any tape does raise the difficulty of this project.

IN CONTEXT
This project considers a fail for me, the hanger overall didn’t execute well to the job that was designed to be. Due to my lack of sketching, mock-ups, and lack of knowledge of what the project direction was. I made something that has every feature that I wanted to create but fail to work properly in execution. As many would say “Too much of anything is bad.” This project teaches me the consequences of this quote and reminds me to really be careful not to be too ambitious with some ideas and trying to put all the ideas together. But I do overall I like the difficulty and enjoy the challenge that I have to face in this project. I consider this as a lesson learned.

REDESIGN PROBLEM
INFLUNCE
Professonal
Though many survey and questioning to many participants. The market of a mouse between professional and gaming is certainly possible. ”how come cars have a market for a performance luxury market and mouse doesn’t?” This question encourages me to BRIDGE THE GAP between professional and gaming mouse market. I Started my inspiration by thinking of Luxury so I started looking at different luxury brand company interior and see which one I like the most. In the end, I chose the Mercedes S-Class interior to be the base design inspiration of my mouse.

For my second inspiration, I chose the Mercedes Benz E-Class AMG because the E-Class is a flagship performance luxury sedan and also to compliment the interior of the same company design. The eyecatching matt dark grey color to show the design astatic with a clear reflection of each stroke on the car.
DESIGN From the idea of Mercedes Benz interior design and the color of the exterior I started sketching with generic shape mouse and move on to more interesting ones. While I was closely inspecting the interior of the Merc I realize that the use of leather, wood, and Aluminum really Compliment each other. So I started playing with the different use of material and apply on the mouse and at the end, I got a design that complements the exterior and interior of the Mercedes Benz.

DEVELOPING In the Modeling process, I’ve made 18+ Mockups to really figure out the form that I would like to move on. I started off trying to make all kinds of mouse shapes, from bold to shell design. In the end, I pick up 3 final one to evolve to the final model. I pick these 3 because others who have tested these 3 shape like the comfort and quality of the design.

FINAL DESIGN The Final design of this mouse consists of aluminum, leather, and Exterior color from the Mercedes-Benz. I believe I created a perfect mouse that satisfies gamers and professional alike. The seamless ambient light gives the overall design a luxury look. The mouse is also titled at 30 degrees to give the hand a comfortable grip. I call my mouse The Komfort Stealth.
