HONORING TROOPERS

SARANAC LAKE Spring is here, and the farmersÍ markets sponsored by the Ausable Valley Grange are about to begin. At these markets, farmers bring to consumers only the quality products that they have produced on their own farms. In addition to farm products, the markets also support food processors and purveyors, artists, and craft artists who share the commitment to quality and locally produced goods. The Grange is committed to a strong local food system, and a robust local economy, according to Sam Hendren, advisor to the markets. The Saranac Lake Village FarmersÍ Market, located in Riverside Park, opens on Saturday, June 1 and will operate through Oct. 26; it runs from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Lake Placid Farmers Market, located at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, opens on Wednesday, June 5, and will operate through Oct. 23; it runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. „

PLATTSBURGH „ Forget what you remember about recorders from elementary school. With the right kind of conductor and the right kind of musicians„ and a variety of instruments from the recorder family„ the sound is majestic enough to make angels sing. Or, at the very least, itÍ s majestic enough to accompany the Northern Adirondack Vocal Ensemble (NAVE) for a series of two performances in Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake. On Saturday and Sunday, NAVE will team up with the Four Winds Recorder Consort to perform two performances of ñ Madrigals, Motets and Merriment.î CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Bell rings for the first set of 6’ers SARANAC LAKE „ 12 hardy souls rang the 6er Bell in Berkeley Green by 8 a.m., May 26, making them Saranac Lake “Ultra” 6ers, having finished climbing Saranac LakeÍ s ñ 6erî peaks: Haystack, McKenzie, Scarface, Baker, St. Regis and Ampersand„ within 24 hours of the May 25 8 a.m. commencement. Over 50 others joined the ñ Ultra Dozenî for the ñ pistol startî from this downtown park with an estimated 30 to 40 more climbing the 6 peaks without registering, all

battling severe weather conditions that included 6 inches of snow upon most of the peaks and torrential stream flooding that blocked access to some mountains, all aiming to earn a Saranac Lake 6er patch, an official number and, of course, bragging rights. First to complete the grueling climb was Loring Porter from Lake Placid in a time of 10 hours and 22 minutes followed by sisters Bethany and Mallory Garretson, hailing from Cherry Valley, who finished

together and rang the 6er Bell together in 11 hours and 10 minutes. Mayor Clyde Rabideau commented, ñ Those 90 climbers endured unusually harsh May weather with gusto and a tremendous positive attitude and I salute them one and all for getting out there and trying.î The weather included constant rain, sleet, snow, freezing temperatures and flooded streams and trails throughout the entire day.

SARANAC LAKE „ The BluSeed Studios will host a unique art project that has traveled across Europe and the United states as homage to end sexual assault. A Panty Pulping class, a program created by the Peace Paper Project, will be held at BluSeed Studio, 24 Cedar Street, on June 14 from 3 to 7 p.m. ñ I think almost everyone is a little baffled when they hear the name of the project, the word panty is perceived as a dirty or sexualized word but the message of the project has reclaimed the word,î said Margaret Mahan, CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
