Sales tax increase approved by state, county By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com

Annual Energy Expo scheduled in Keeseville

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ After years of lobbying the state, Essex County finally has a sales tax increase. Members of the county Board of Supervisors voted 17-0 during a special meeting Aug. 26 to increase their share of the sales tax from 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent. The increase brings the total sales tax figure to 8.0 percent with state and county combined. Westport Supervisor Dan Connell was unable to attend the meeting. The change will go into effect Dec. 1.

WESTPORT Ñ Equipment used to hold youth horse shows during the Essex County Fair has come up missing three weeks after the annual festival. According to Linda Gilliland of Cornell Cooperative Extension, eight 10foot galvanized ranch panels were stolen from the fairgroundsÕ horse show ring Aug. 19. Ò An eyewitness stated that a dark colored pickup truck drove onto the fairgrounds and stopped at the cattle show ring,Ó Gilliland said. Ò Two men got out and proceeded to load up the ranch panels into their truck bed. They

were very quiet loading up the panels but drove off in a big hurry.Ó The panels are valued at over $100 each and are used to help provide a secure location for 4-H youth members to work with their livestock. Gilliland said the panels were paid for through fundraising efforts by members of the Essex County 4-H organizations. Ò It took several years for our 4-H youth, their tireless leaders and adult volunteers to collect and return enough recyclables and hold bake sales to purchase these panels to provide a safe and secure place to work with their horses, cattle, sheep, goats and hogs,Ó she said. Ò Although these men may have

thought they were stealing from the Fair, they should be aware they were actually stealing from children.Ó Along with use by 4-H, the panels were also loaned out to people who needed temporary enclosures for animals. Ò Our 4-H members have graciously loaned out these portable panels in time of community need such as when the Evens family experienced a devastating barn fire or when the Fair needed to use them to set up temporary stalls for animal exhibits,Ó Gilliland said. If anyone has any information, please contact the New York State Police or Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Essex County election field set By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ The Town of Willsboro may be the center of the Essex County political universe in the 2013 election season. First, the town is home to District Attorney Kristy Sprague, one of 101 candidates to file an independent petition with the Essex County Board of Elections Aug. 20. Second, the number of people running for elected office in the town increased as four additional names were added to the Highway Superintendent ballot. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
