PERU Ñ The 36th annual St. AugustineÕ s Applefest will kick-off with returning family favorites, vendors, games, musical entertainment and plenty of food during the two-day event on Sept. 21 and 22 at the church at 3035 Main Street. Ò We have quite a crowd that comes back every year,Ó said Applefest committee chairman, Gary Liberty. Ò Boy itÕ s hard to gage when the grounds are full for two days but I had to guess we had 4 to 5,000 visitors last year.Ó The event will begin on Saturday with the parade at 11 a.m. which will step off on Main Street. Local author and publisher Larry Gooley has written and self-published numerous books, from histories of local North Country places like Lyon Mountain and Altona, to the Adirondack Literary Award winning OliverÕ s War. Concert celebrates folk music special collection PLATTSBURGH — The final concert in the “Songs to Keep” series will take the stage on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Hawkins Hall Giltz Theater on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus.

Some of the North Country’s finest artists will bring to life music from and inspired by the Marjorie Lansing Porter Collection of Ballads and Lore, housed in the Feinberg Library Special Collections. Gathered by a lively historian who traveled across northern New York more than a half century ago recording songs and oral histories on a SoundScriber recorder, the music and stories were recently digitized in a two-year effort undertaken bySUNY Plattsburgh Communication Studies professor, Dr. Timothy Clukey.

The Ò Songs to KeepÓ concerts are part of an exciting and far-reaching project that showcases the songs in the Porter Collection and includes a CD recorded by contemporary artists, a songbook with music, lyrics, and historical information, and a documentary that will be aired on PBS. The grand finale “Songs to Keep” concert in Plattsburgh features a number of Adirondack North Country favorites Ð Dave Ruch, Jamie Savage and Sue Grimm Hanley, Dan Berggren, and

Colleen Cleveland. Lee Knight, a friend and protŽ gŽ of Mrs. Porter, whose research and recollections were an inspiration for the project, will perform, and there will be a special guest appearance by June Millington, Marjorie Lansing PorterÕ s granddaughter , co-founder of and lead guitarist in the 1970s all-female rock band Fanny, and co-founder of the Institute for the Musical Arts in Goshen, MA. Concert host and performer Dave Ruch will share background and stories about Mrs. Porter, the music, and the making of the CD. The evening will begin at 7pm with a sneak-preview of scenes from a documentary being made by Mountain Lake PBS about the music portion of the Porter Collection and the Songs to Keep project, with the music concert beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the concert are $10 (free for SUNY students) and

can be purchased at the door or in advance at the SUNY Plattsburgh Angell College Center Desk (8 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily).

Following the concert there will be a Concert Talk Back and reception sponsored by Feinberg Library Special Collections and Guide Boat Realty of Saranac Lake. This will be an opportunity to meet and talk with members of Mrs. PorterÕ s family, concert musicians, and people who have been involved with the Ò Songs to KeepÓ project. An exhibit exploring the fascinating life and work of Marjorie Lansing Porter will be on display in the reception area. All are welcome.

limestone quarry, LeClaire said. Ò For 50 years the land was mined for limestone until one day I was told they hit a spring while digging and then a lake was born,Ó said LeClaire. The property was purchased by her family about 10 years ago and since then, LeClaire said it has been her labor of love to tenderly rejuvenate the soil and the landscape into an herbal retreat and living sculpture garden.

Some of the work will come right from the land, some pieces are temporarily erected for the exhibit while others have been made into permanent displays.

The work will be displayed out around the property in the courtyard overlooking the lake, in the garden and into the woods, LeClaire said.

LeClaire said the artists have been working together for years and their mutual artistic styles felt a perfect fit to work together on the show. Ò We all do work that is pretty penetrating, work that penetrates all the senses,Ó LeClaire said.

Additional artists are invited to participate. LeClaire said work can be submitted with a $3 to $10 sliding scale submission fee.

BurtonÕ s work will bring a Ò strong presenceÓ using bigger pieces made from wood, stone, and steel sculptures, said LeClaire.

CochronÕ s work will center around the theme of a humanÕ s place in the world and utilizes all the elements of the human psychology. ItÕ s centered around their desire for religion and companionship through wooden totem polls that illustrate religious themes of the modern man, LeClaire said.

While RisleyÕ s work will be less structured, LeClaire said her presence will surround the entirety of the showcased artwork through her wood, fabric, stones to reflect the herbal art specifically planted by the lake. Ò Her work will set the place,Ó LeClaire said.

Most of the work will be for sale, LeClaire said, but work can also be commissioned for particular customers.

Beets and Bones show to open at Quarry Garden farm katherine@denpubs.com CHAZY Ñ In a fusion of art and nature, a new show will come alive from the soil of the Quarry Garden Garlic Farm in Chazy, building an all encompassing creative experience from the collaboration of four artists.

The Ò Beets and BonesÓ show is a collaboration between Kimberly LeClaire, Meg Risley, Gharan Burton, and Jeff Cochron.

Additional artists may participate by submitting their work before the show.

LeClaire said the Ò BeetsÓ are a play on the elements of the earth, fruit of the farmÕ s soil and celebration of the farmÕ s 10th anniversary performance. The Ò BonesÓ signify life, creation and being alive.

The art show will be held on Sept. 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the farm, located about 10 miles north of ConroyÕ s Organics on Route 9 in Chazy. Ò It isnÕ t really marked and doesnÕ t have an address but we will have signs and markers by the road to lead our guests to the show,Ó said LeClaire. Ò We arenÕ t a typical, open-to-thepublic farm like the orchards in the area so this show will be a chance for people to get a rare look at our place, see the art in an interactive walk through the property and if they want to they can purchase garlic on the way out.Ó The farm itself was built upon the grounds of a former

Local teen begins singing career with two “Idol” wins

katherine@denpubs.com AUSABLE FORKS Ñ Singing has become the focus of 14-year-old Latalya Ò TallyÓ DuellÕ s dreams. Ò I always dreamed I would be famous one day,Ó Tally said.

Tally got a taste of stardom this summer opening for two big acts, Lori Morgan and Chris Higbee, by winning local Ò IdolÓ competitions. Ò I never thought I would be opening for Lori Morgan at 14, hopefully my dreams keep coming true like theyÕ ve started to,Ó she said.

After winning the MayorÕ s Cup Idol in Plattsburgh, Tally opened for famous country music star Morgan at the Clinton County Fair in July. Later in the summer she continued to win over judges at the Essex County Fair where she won the Idol competition there and got the opportunity to open for Higbee.

Tally said she always loved singing but only began training a year ago. Ò IÕ ve always liked to sing, I felt I might as well get out there and try to make it somewhere,Ó Tally said.

She decided to move from school performances to working with professional coaching. Ò She works with two singing coaches and sheÕ s singing in local concerts and competitions, itÕ s really taken off,Ó said TallyÕ s mom Christy Duell.

Tally said her first large performance in front of a large crowd was scary. Ò It was an amazing experience, opening for Lori Morgan, when I was backstage I was kind of in a state of shock before I went out,Ó said Tally. Ò The audience looked big, IÕ d never performed in front of an audience that size. It was really nerve racking until I got out there.Ó Though she was nervous, Tally said once she started singing and got out on stage it was a great feeling. Ò It really helped me for my next performance when I opened for Chris Higbee,Ó said Tally.

Literacy Volunteer tutor training set

PLATTSBURGH Ñ Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County is in need of new tutors. We tutor adults, one-on-one, for two hours each week with flexible scheduling. Tutors can choose to work with a BLL (reading) or ELL (learning to speak English) student.

Tutors are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours (4 three-hour sessions) of free training, before they are matched with a learner.

Training begins with a required Orientation Session on Sept. 9, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Room 049 in the basement of Hawkins Hall at Plattsburgh State University. For those who choose to work with a BLL learner, the next two sessions would be on Sept. 16 and 18 at the same time and place.

For those who want to focus on ELL learners, the next two sessions would be on Sept. 23 and 25 same time and location.

Training will conclude with a required Successful Tutoring Session on Sept. 30, again at the same time and place.

The pair help the young artists with range, voice techniques, breathing and developing a stage presence. abandonment will be one less New Yorker paying taxes, buying a home and or sending their children to New York schools.

If this is a graduate’s first loan, when a minimum payment comes through on the bill the first thing an untrained person will see is the minimum allowable payment. The minimum payment could be $50 or it could be hundreds.

Either might feel more manageable for the student. Unfortunately, paying just the minimum debt does little to lower the principle. It could be 10 or even 20 years before the student is debt free.

And, the option of deferring students loans can only be accessible for so long.

Most college graduates go into fields still as entry level workers with minimum paychecks living in modest homes if not back in with their parents to pay back the student loans.

The question needs to be raised why is New York strapping people who are just starting out with debts that most simply cannot afford to pay back Ñ at least in the foreseeable future.

In 2011, The New York State Legislature passed legislation which authorized the SUNY Board of Trustees to raise tuition for SUNY and CUNY campuses every year for the next five years.

SUNY schools will raise tuition $300 per year for in-state students through the 2015-2016 academic year, $940 per year for out-of-state students at SUNY colleges and $1,340 per year for out-of-state students at the SUNY University Centers located in Binghamton, Stony Brook, Buffalo and Albany.

Earlier in the summer Republican senators shot down bills before the Senate that would have stabilized and regulated interest rates for student loans and set a precedent in investing in the future of students in New York.

An analysis by the State Budget Office estimated that interest rates for students will rise nearly 3 percent this year alone. The cost of a college education is simply becoming too overwhelming in this state and a majority of the country.

Is the alternative to simply not attend college and enter the workforce debt free?

It is a question todayÕ s high school graduate really needs to ask themselves. In the meantime, state lawmakers need to do a whole lot more when it comes to investing in higher education, because these individuals truly are our future. Ñ

Cost for a college education becoming exorbitant hen looking at investments, the smartest thing to do is to weigh the cost and the potential reward.

Every year students are working hard through high school in hopes of getting into a good college to further their educational goals and prepare themselves for the workforce.

If students are smart they can get scholarships to pay for college. If they are lucky, their families have stockpiled money for them to attend college, or perhaps they have a combination of the two.

Most college students start out with no financial debt and no real know-how of balancing a checkbook, planning their financial future, and no investments other than their potential investment in their education.

New Yorkers in recent years have seen a steady increase in tuition for State Universities (SUNY) or City Universities (CUNY). The $100 increases may not feel like an immediate punch to the wallet but over time those increases have mounted, severely impacting students.

Why is New York State using our students to settle debts made by its lawmakers? In recent years the tuition hikes have gone straight into the state’s general fund — not a penny benefited the educational institutions.

The state needs to start seeing college students as more than a revenue source if they truly believe they are Ò our future.Ó Many other countries see the value in providing a free college education to their citizens as a security deposit for a profitable future. European countries like Sweden offer a free college education to citizens. Though student loans are also taken out to provide food and housing while students attend college, SwedenÕ s college graduates are leaving with a degree and 60 percent less college debt than students in America.

Tying the financial burden left by financially established adults to newly self reliant young adults is unethical. Mortgage loan debt can be forgiven when someone declares bankruptcy.

Student loan debt will never be forgiven and interest rates are allowed to jump any which way the lender wants.

If our educated young adults must make a choice between securing a job in their field or taking a hit and starting in an entry-level position which pays more, many will be forced to leave their chosen field to pay off the debt.

Carrying this debt results in future impacts to the stateÕ s economy. Not only might graduates leave their field, they could leave the state to find cheaper cost of living elsewhere. This

Sally & Anna Meisenheimer Dear Mad Advice: I have made some bad choices in dating or stayed with boyfriends who were actually not very nice to me. Apparently I am not good at choosing up front. How would you suggest I evaluate my choices?

From Mother and Daughter: We are interpreting this as your recognized failed search for a long-term mate. If you thought you were just Ò having funÓ and really had no intention of longevity, your question is most likely coming from a new and surprising place where you are actually ready for a permanent future! Coming from different generations, we still see lifelong LOVE in a very similar way!

From Sally: Start your revamp by creating a list of the top 5 qualities that you need/want in a mate. This will become your deal breaker list from the get-go. Consider lifestyle choices, education, character, spirituality, sense of humor and hobbies. This quality list may come quite easily or you may find that it takes some introspection. Ask yourself what you have liked/not liked in your past choices. Very often your new perspective comes from what you have been dissatisfied with in past relationships.

Always consider who that person will become (this is how I chose 30+ years ago), as creating a future with someone you are proud of and really like to be around is a crucial part of a

relationship. Their foundation of how they were raised defines them; it may be altered, however itÕ s ultimately these rock bottom qualities that may not be changeable.

Some other things to consider: • In any relationship it is important to keep other parts of your life in tact and thriving. Keeping your own friends and interests should be mutually supported.

• Commitment and caring at a 50/50 proportion is something to strive for; sometimes itÕ ll be 60/40 or 30/70, but supporting each other equally is important. 50/50 is what brings out the best in each partner, not the worst resentful version of you!

• Physical attraction should never be underestimated; however it cannot stand alone. Intimacy is what sets your relationship apart from any others, so pay attention to that spark, as it should be there naturally.

• On mothering; DON’T! If you find yourself frequently correcting him or offering better choices, you may have stepped into a parenting role.

From Anna: What do you value in a relationship? Are there certain qualities that you possess that youÕ d like reciprocated? These are basic questions you should be asking yourself when searching for a mate. Being in a relationship that is unpredictable and emotionally charged is fun for a while, but when it comes down to it, the caliber of the relationship without the Ô thrillÕ can be lacking in substance. I have been there, and I think IÕ m being honest when I say a lot of other women have been there too.

• Strip down to the basics – without the bells and whistles – is he GOOD? When I say good, I mean bare-bones good. Is he the type who would carry himself the same way regardless of your presence, or your familiesÕ presence? I think the answer to that question speaks volumes about a person.

• Make a list of the qualities you want in a mate. It may be helpful to lay it out on paper, that way you can gain perspective on your past relationships Ð what was missing in the past and what you ultimately need and want.

• Qualities are one thing, but chemistry is also important. It is what connects you on a deeper emotional and physical level.

You may find a few guys that have all the qualities, but the spark is missing. ThatÕ s ok, itÕ s just not right. This brings me to my last point - YouÕ re allowed to be critical and picky. Respect yourself - trust your intuition. If you are being your best self, that is what you deserve in return.

National attention for a North Country murder story is not totally new for Bloated Toe. Just a week before the call for NBC, Gooley and Jones received a call, again unsolicited, from a California production company who was interested in GooleyÕ s 2009 Ò Terror in the Adirondacks: The True Story of Serial Killer Robert F. Garrow.Ó They are in talks to turn Terror in the Adirondacks into a movie. Ò This all came to us,Ó said Gooley. Ò We should be out getting a TV network or a movie, and weÕ re not. These are coming to us.Ó Gooley is hopeful that this project comes together as well, but warns that movies are a much lengthier and tenuous prospect than a television feature. Ò Whenever we get something like this we sort of make note of it, put it aside, and keep working.Ó Working for Gooley is writing and publishing, and he doesnÕ t plan on slowing down regardless of how much attention his stories are garnering. Bloated Toe has just published Ò Killing in the Kuyahoora Valley,Ó and Gooley is currently working on another compilation of North Country murders.

Featuring everything from period music and military bands to a Beatles tribute band, this yearÕ s musical offering spans musical genres as well as the North Country landscape.

For $10, adults can purchase a button which will allow them access all musical venues, plus all other attractions except the Cannonball Run, The British Invasion Dinner and Horseback Rides at the ChildrenÕ s Fair. Children under 18 are free anywhere the button gains access.

Gibson Brothers to headline Pburgh Bluegrass Festival

andy@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ Ellenburg Depot natives Eric and Leigh Gibson will return to the 2nd Annual Plattsburgh Bluegrass Festival for a Sept. 14 performance with their award-winning band, the Gibson Brothers, at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. They will join nine other bands

during the Sept. 12-15 event.

The festival will be held two weeks earlier this year, and it will last for four days instead of three like it was during the inaugural year. Ò This year, IÕ ve started the music on Thursday,Ó said Clinton County Fair Manager Glenn Gillespie said. “Last year was my first year, and I noticed that a lot of people came in on Thursday, and everybody was waiting for music. This place was packed on Thursday, so we decided to start it a day earlier.Ó In 2012, the crowd was bundled up as the temperatures do during the fall in the North

Country. But thereÕ s no telling what the weather will be like, according to Gillespie. The 2013 festival will be held just as the fall foliage season is getting under way. Ò Last year it was cold the three days we were here, but the following week it was in the 80s, so you just canÕ t tell with the weather,Ó Gillespie said.

For a new event, it seems as though the festival is gaining some momentum. Ò Last year, we didnÕ t know how it would work out, and we actually did very well last year,Ó Gillespie said. Ò Now this year has just gone crazy. TheyÕ ve been calling for a spot since January.Ó All electric sites are sold and theyÕ re renting out dry camping spots behind the stage. They expect regular bluegrass festival goers and visitors from north of the border. Ò IÕ m getting a lot of interest from the Canadian crowd,Ó Gillespie said. Ò I was up in Pembroke, Ontario last week and passed out a bunch of our brochures, and the phone has been ringing off the hook ... We had a lot of Canadians last year, but this year it looks like weÕ ll have even more.Ó One reason for the interest north of the border is the popularity of the Canadian bands on the schedule, such as the Spinney Brothers.

Ryan Frankhouser, of Remington Ryde, will be the emcee for the Plattsburgh Bluegrass Festival, and Green Mountain Sound will provide the sound. Dave Nichols, of Whippleville, will be donating a guitar for the raffle, with proceeds to benefit the festival.

Workshops will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 in Building 16.

Henry Delord gets new grave marker An anonymous donor adds marker to prominent citizen’s grave in Riverside cemetery

shawn@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGHÑ Henry DelordÕ s gravestone is showing the ravages of time, and the inscription on its face is barely readable.

But now, an anonymous donor has donated a marker to accompany the historical grave stone, which mirrors the fading inscription found on its marble face.

With DelordÕ s grave residing in Riverside Cemetery, and not on the grounds of the Kent-Delord House, its deteriorated condition went largely unnoticed until a Kent-Delord House volunteer noticed it, and took it upon themselves to do something about it. Ò I am pleased and thankful to have such great people who volunteer at the Kent-Delord House Museum,Ó said Connie Mandeville, interim director at the Kent-Delord House, in a press release. Ò Thankfully the volunteer took on this project and made

sure that future generations will be able to see and read HenryÕ s grave.Ó DelordÕ s family was prominent in Plattsburgh in the 1800s.

Delord moved to Plattsburgh from the Peru Quaker Union in 1811. He lived and owned a general store, the Red Store, at the 17 Cumberland Avenue location where the Kent-Delord House Museum now sits. According to Mandeville, Delord and his business partner William Bailey were the only store owners who would allow U.S. soldiers to buy on credit in the days leading up to the 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh.

The Kent-Delord House was most notably the British headquarters during the Battle of Plattsburgh, but now stands as a museum telling the history of three generations of Delords, and their impact on the North Country. Ò The work on HenryÕ s grave just reminds us that we still donÕ t know where HenryÕ s wife Betsey Delord is buried,Ó Mandeville adds. 15th annual Roducky Derby planned

shawn@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGHÑ The Plattsburgh Rotary Club will be hosting itÕ s 15th annual Roducky Derby, in conjunction with Battle of Plattsburgh week festivities.

The event, a rubber duck race down a specially made water flume, raises money for the community services sponsored by the Rotary Club. It takes place Sept. 14.

The Roducky Derby will be held in front of the Macdonough Monument at 3 p.m., along the walkway leading to the river, immediately following the Beat Retreat during the Battle of Plattsburgh commemoration. Ducks can be Ò adoptedÓ for $5 fee during the week leading up to the race, with the winning ducks garnering prizes for their adoptive parents donated by local area businesses. The grand prize is two tickets to Ò Live with Kelly and

Michael,Ó in New York City, with transportation and overnight lodging provided.

The Roducky Derby will also feature the 4th annual running of the Rotary bed race.

First Weekend Summer Finale with Lucid
