LAKE PLACID Ñ ItÕ s a Lake Placid tradition each fall on the villageÕ s golf courses. Every year on a rotating basis, the bar and restaurant service community in the region tees it up to benefi t the needy animals of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society. A year ago, this event generated $7,000. The twoperson scramble at picturesque Craig Wood Golf Course on Route 73 hopes to produce even better results on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The combined handicap of each team cannot be lower than 20. The tournament, contested in menÕ s, womenÕ s and mixed divisions, is presented by beverage distributor High Peaks Distributing in Saranac Lake and online golf retailer rockbottomgolf.com, which has donated many prizes for this event.

LAKE PLACID Ñ A group of Lake Placid residents and parents have come together to try and help save a Lake Placid landmark. The group is seeking to save the rock that is located next to the bandshell in Mids Park, which engineers overseeing a project to create a new staging area say will have to be removed in order to do the work. Ò This upcoming year the Bandshell in Mids Park is going to get a much needed renovation,Ó Jeff Erenstone said. Ò In doing so, the ground needs to be raised to make more dancing space, improve the wheelchair access, and have better control of water runoff. The only sacrifi ce in this plan is Ô The Rock,Õ that kids play on in front of the current bandshell. Our children play on this rock, and we think it is very important characteristic of this
park and needs to be saved.Ó Erenstone and others presented their request to members of the Lake Placid Village Board Aug. 26. He said the village Board gave Ò conceptual approvalÓ to the plans to replace Ò The RockÓ with a new rock and place it in Mids Park. Erenstone said that goes along with the mission of the group, which is to Ò save the rockiness of Mids Park by assisting in the replacement of the current rock with a replacement rock while promoting/fundraising for the Lake Placid Bandshell Renovation project.Ó Ò Even if people donÕ t care about the rock, we believe that the bandshell project is a worthy cause and worthy of donations,Ó Erenstone said. Ò Mountain Orthotic and Prosthetic Services has promised to match funds up to $1,000 for donation to the Bandshell Park Fund at generousact.org/donate with special instruction to Save the Rock.Ó
Erenstone said that the committee has created a Facebook page (facebook.com/ lprocksave), which promotes both the need for the rock and the need for a new bandshell. The page also includes several fun facts. •Studies have shown that children who climb on rocks while listening to music have a 70 percent greater chance of success in life. •The lead singer for Def Leppard sat on this rock when he composed Ò Rock of Ages.Ó •Almost all rainbows end here. The mineralogical testing is not complete yet, but there is a strong suspicion that the center of the rock is solid gold. Ò None of the fun facts on the Facebook page can be verifi ed and may not be fact at all,Ó Erenstone said. Ò But I think they are fun.Ó
TUPPER LAKE Ñ A community effort will allow the State Theater to stay current in the new, digital movie age. The Adirondack North Country Association announced last week that the State Theater had reached its fundraising goal of $95,000 to update the two movie screens for the coming switchover to digital film. Small community theaters throughout the country have been faced with the same task, to generate enough money to make the transition to digital film or go out of business. State owner Sally Strasser was grateful for the community support and the chance to continue to run the latest films in Tupper Lake. Ò I couldnÕ t be more grateful that the people in Tupper Lake who want their theater to be healthy and in business, that they love the place so much,Ó Strasser said. Ò I canÕ t wait to get more movies, earlier, when my audience wants them.Ó The funds also help keep an important part of the townÕ s history alive. Ò It is such a piece of history here, and IÕ m ecstatic we can keep it,Ó she said. Ò IÕ m so proud to be part of this amazing community. I always knew this was a special place.Ó Strasser was able to get a $35,000 grant to start before community members helped out. According to ANCA, the remaining $60,000 was raised in less than a month. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
