Welcome to the 2018 Section X Football season. We are pleased to again partner with Denton Publications and North Country SportsNet to bring you this great league-wide Game Day program. As the upcoming season approaches, I think of all the great history that North Country football fans have experienced for over the past 100 years.
GOUVERNEUR
WILDCATS
This time of year brings out football FRANKLIN ACADEMY fans of all ages. Last season, Gouverneur HUSKIES repeated as champions of the Northern Athletic Conference (NAC) with an undefeated regular season. The Wildcats defeated Section VII’s Peru Indians in the first round of the NYSPHSAA Class B Playoffs, before falling in a heartbreaker to Section II champion Glens Falls 28-26 in the Class B quarterfinals. Ogdensburg repeated as the Section X Class C champion. The Blue Devils MASSENIA defeated Section VII’s Saranac Central in the first round of RED RAIDERS the NYSPHSAA Class C playoffs, before falling to eventually Class C state runner-up Holy Trinity from Section II. Tupper Lake represented Section X in the NYSPHSAA Class D playoffs falling to Section VII champion Moriah. OGDENSBURG
BLUE DEVILS
The Potsdam Sandstoners enjoyed a productive season as they garnered a spot in the Section X Class B championship. The St. Lawrence Central Larries also had a very successful season, making it to the Section X Class C final. Massena, Canton, Malone and Tupper Lake will be looking to build upon their many positive experiences from last year, as they look toward what promises to be a very exciting 2018 Section X football season. The NAC classifications for the 2018 season consists of: Class A schools Massena and Canton; Class B schools Malone and Potsdam; Class C schools Gouverneur, Ogdensburg and St. Lawrence Central. The schools will compete for the regular-season NAC championship, then break into classes for NYSPHSAA playoff purposes. Tupper Lake, last year’s Class D representative, will be moving to Eight-Man Football in 2018. Their schedule will be comprised of Eight-Man football schools from Section III.

Throughout the upcoming 2018 NAC and Section X football season, players from across the Section will strive to create their own memories and have a lot of fun in the process. Some players will undoubtedly make their mark for future generations of North Country football fans to reflect upon. I hope you all enjoy the football and appreciate the hard work and dedication that these players have invested in their seasons. The coaches and players appreciate the TUPPER LAKE outstanding support that they continue to receive from their LUMBERJACKS communities. I know I feel very lucky to live in northern New York. Please be a great fan and enthusiastically support your team while respecting each opponent. Best Regards,

The Canton Golden Bears are hoping to make a stronger showing in the hotly-contested 2018 season, with a core group of returnees behind veteran quarterback Declan Porter. Canton closed out the 2017 campaign at 2-5 overall and tied with Massena for sixth place in the division. While the Bears upset Malone 27-14 and defeated Tupper Lake 42-7, the Canton squad missed out on a chance for a third win with a disappointing, last-minute 31-30 loss in Massena in Week 5. This year, the two squads will compete for the first time against each other for the Section X Class A championship. This season, the Golden Bears will be moving into Class A, due to the number of mergers with
4 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2018
neighboring schools. Said Head Coach Tom Cloce, “Canton has been a ‘melting pot’ in Section X, welcoming players from Canton, Lisbon, HermonDeKalb, Edwards-Knox and adding Heuvelton into the 2018 season. Winning the Section X Class A Championship would mean a lot for not only for our players and Canton, but the nearby communities we work with.” In 2018, the Bears will follow the senior leadership of third-year quarterback Declan Porter and senior running back Robert Beaudin. Cloce said, “Declan has been working hard this preseason to continue building on what he learned from last year. As for Beaudin, he will be an athlete to watch on both
offensive and defensive sides of the ball. He’s tough, can carry the ball, block and has been an impact player on defense.” The Golden Bears have built a lot of depth in their roster with 36 players, with a good balance of 18 linemen and 18 backs. Coach Cloce stated, “ We have all the tools to be very successful this season, but it’s up the them to continue developing as the team throughout the season and live up to what they are capable of.” The Golden Bears look to start the 2018 season off strong, opening the campaign at home against the Malone Huskies.

Good luck to all Section X athletes in 2017-18
2018 // Section X Football Preview // 9
The Gouverneur Wildcats are coming off a secondstraight undefeated regular season – going 6-0 in 2016 and 7-0 in 2017 – and look to carry that “Fear the G” momentum into the 2018 season. Last season, Wildcats captured the Section X Class B Championship, shutting down the Potsdam Sandstoners 30-0. In state play, Gouverneur defeated the Section VII champion Peru Indians in the opening round. However, the Wildcats’ season came to a close in a heart-stopping 28-26 loss to the Glens Falls Indians in the state quarterfinal. Gouverneur will have some big shoes to fill this season, with the loss of Connor Fenlong, Jordan Countryman and Morgan Easton to graduation. Despite graduating 13 seniors from last season, the Gouverneur will still have a good core of returning players, mixed in with newcomers on the varsity
10 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2018
team this season. The Wildcats will be led by returning running back Peyton Schmitt who rushed for just over 1,800 yards last season and established a new Section X single-game record with 433 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Running back Garrison Gonyeau is expected to get more touches this season. Head Coach Sean Devlin said, “I think Garrison is underrated. He’s got speed and can be a good counter rusher with Peyton.” With the quarterback job up for grabs, Caleb Farr and Cayden Stowell are getting practice reps, with Jacob Shippee also getting a preseason look. Senior Logan Garrison will lead the Cats in the trenches on both the offensive and defensive line, along with inside linebacker Jacob Link.
Devlin says this year’s team is “high energy, vocal and shows good leadership.” He said game preparation will be the key going into each week. The Wildcats will be in a tough Class C battle with muchimproved St. Lawrence Central and perennial rival Ogdensburg. Devlin says what the Wildcats lack in size this season, they plan on make up with speed. The coach’s keys to success are to stay healthy, fully utilize its strength in rushing and diverse play calling on the field. Devlin believes the 2018 season is going to be tough and competitive across Section X, challenging the Wildcats’ two-year, undefeated run. However, Gouverneur are ready to be a strong contender again and one of the teams to beat in 2018.

The Franklin Academy Huskies are hoping to improve past the .500 mark as they get the 2018 season underway. Malone closed out the 2017 season with a 3-4 record, picking up wins over Tupper Lake, Massena and Potsdam. The Huskies fell just short in close battles with Canton and St. Lawrence Central. Coach Greg Marshall, who plans to make 2018 his final season at the helm of the gridiron Huskies, said last year was highlighted by the Huskies’ regular-season win over Class B rival Potsdam. However, the green-and-white was not able to carry the momentum forward and fell to the
14 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2018
Sandstoners in the Class B playoffs. The 2018 Huskies are small in number with 24 players, but led by a large percentage of returnees behind senior quarterback Hunter Swan. With 13 seniors, F.A. will rely on third-year rusher Timothy Langdon, along with returnees Jordan St. Hilaire and Tyler Preve. Alfred McNeil joins the varsity this year to round out Malone’s Four Horsemen of the Backfield. “If we stay healthy and continue to improve,” Marshall said, “we have the experience to be successful offensively.” However, he noted that while his backfield is solid, the line is shallow
in numbers. “We have at least seven good starters. Ian Maneely is a big, sturdy tackle, but we are not as deep as we have been.” Evan Keegan returns as tight end and defensive tackle. Brandon Dietz still step in as the Huskies’ new center. Marshall believes the keys to Malone’s success this year will be staying healthy, avoiding injuries and staying focused on improvement. “While every game in a short schedule is important, “I think Ogdensburg and Gouverneur will continue to be the teams to beat. Both are strong and coming off championship seasons. So we have to be ready.”

STAYING HYDRATED By Shawn Ryan
feedback@suncommunitynews.com
Across the North Country, the dreaded two-a-days, or in some case just plain old long and grueling single practices, have shaken our local athletes out of their summer induced ennui and started the process of whipping them back into playing shape. While coaches go over everything from cleats to practice drills to bus schedules, one thing that should be in the forefront of their minds is proper hydration for young athletes. Even with the dog-days of summer largely behind, the need to drink enough fluids during a workout is essential for not just the performance of the athlete, but for their health as well. According to the Mayo Clinic: “Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn’t have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don’t replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated.” While symptoms of dehydration can range from the simple to acute, high school athletes have actually died from severe dehydration during
18 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2018
grueling practices in recent years. The debate often arises as to what type of drinks hydrate the best; water or sports drinks. Theories abound. “For most outdoor activities, good old fashioned tap water does the trick,” says an article at Web MD. “If your activity lasts an hour or more, either fruit juice diluted with water or a sports drink will provide carbohydrates for energy plus minerals to replace lost electrolytes in your sweat.” Somewhere in this mix falls the newest kid on the hydration block: “Fitness waters,” which are lightly flavored waters which claim to be fortified with vitamins and minerals. According to Web MD, they fall somewhere in the middle between water and Gatorade or Powerade. But the general consensus seems to be, if the flavoring of the water gets the athlete to drink more, then fitness waters are a good thing. But how much is enough? Most experts agree that pre-hydrating with about two cups of fluid an hour before the workout is
essential. During the activity, four to six ounces for every 15 to 20 minutes of exercise will keep the muscles hydrated during the workout. Taking breaks during practice to drink is critical as well, rather than trying to make it all up after practice. Also, an athlete should not wait until they are thirsty before stopping for a drink. By then, dehydration has already begun, and re-hydration can take a while to take hold. On one point all the experts agree — energy drinks should not be part of the hydration mix. While athletes might think they are getting an energy boost after consuming an energy drink, the exact opposite is true. That’s because energy drinks containing large amounts of caffeine can cause dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, and increase body temperature and heart rate, which can compromise performance. Whether it’s water, sports drink or vitamin water, drinking an adequate amount is critical at this time of the year for young athletes, and it’s up to both coaches and athletes to keep the athlete safe.

TEEN CON
A PARENTS GUIDE
Right now, what may seem like “overkill” will help ensure that your teen has the best chance to heal and rejoin the team safely. After all we all want what’s best for our kids both today and for a lifetime.
Sports should be an integral part of the life of every teen. It teaches teambuilding, sportsmanship and dedication. However, concussions are sometimes the unwanted result of sports participation. A concussion may also be referred to as a “head injury” or “mild traumatic brain injury”. A concussion is not a bruise to the brain; it’s an interruption of how the brain works. A concussion results when the athlete is strongly bumped or jolted causing the brain to move or twist inside the skull. Only 10% of concussions result in the athlete losing consciousness. Anyone can get a concussion, however, the fact that they are still growing makes it that much easier for children and teens to experience brain movement. In most cases, hits to the head do not result in a concussion. That is because the brain is protected by the skull; a very hard covering made of bone that works like a helmet. Hit hard enough, such as a high impact helmet to helmet hit, the brain can be shaken around inside the skull causing a concussion. Concussions and other brain injuries are fairly common. About every 21 seconds, someone in the United States has a serious brain injury. One of the most common reasons teens get concussions is through a sports injury. Contact sports such as football, pose a higher risk of head injury, even with the use of protective headgear. According to the Institute of Medicine, high school football players are nearly twice as likely to get concussions as college counterparts or high school athletes playing other sports; as many as 20 percent of athletes who get a concussion have symptoms that linger more than two weeks. What can I as a parent do?...As parents we must be the advocate for our teen athletes. Too many 22 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2018
times everyone is caught up in the excitement of the game and the athlete will try to “tough it out”. This can result in the athlete suffering what is called Second Impact Syndrome. This is when an athlete suffers a second concussion before the first one has had time to heal. To be a victim of Second Impact Syndrome the athlete doesn’t even have to be hit very hard. The brain is already vulnerable so even a sight hit to the head or even the chest can result in uncontrollable swelling of the brain, very often resulting in long term disability or even death. It’s important to recognize the signs of a concussion and help the teen understand that going back too soon could have lifelong consequences. Healing time for a concussion should not be hurried. Along with sitting out a few games and practices probably the hardest part of a concussion for your teen will be, “No video games, no texting, no using the computer, and no watching TV,” says Tracey Covassin, PhD, an athletic trainer and concussion expert at Michigan State University. Even though games, texting, and watching TV seem simple, your teens’ brain has to work to keep track of what’s happening on the screen. These activities should be avoided for about 7-10 days, in most cases. Of course, your doctor has the last word on exactly how much time you need. Depending on the severity of the concussion your teen may experience difficulty with school work and maintaining the busy schedule teens keep. It may be necessary to miss or curtail school for a few days; again your physician and your teen will help you make these decisions. As long as your child is having any symptoms caused by the concussion, it will be very important to prevent Second Concussion Syndrome (see below).
THESE SIGNS INCLUDE: PHYSICAL • Headaches • Fatigue, seeming tired, trouble staying awake • Trouble sleeping • Lack of energy, slow-moving • Blurry or double vision • Sensitivity to noise or light • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded • Nausea
Thinking (Cognitive) • Not remembering how the concussion happened • Becoming easily confused • Slowness in thinking, seeming “foggy” or “zoned out” • Difficulty paying attention • Forgetfulness, memory problems • More difficulty at school than normal
Emotional and Behavioral • Becoming easily annoyed or angry, seeming cranky and irritable • Feeling worried or nervous • Seeming emotional, crying more easily than normal • Not seeming like himself/herself, personality changes

CUSSIONS If your child suffers a concussion; Your child should not do any activity in which your child might hit or jolt the head, until cleared by a qualified physician.
IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD MIGHT HAVE A CONCUSSION IMMEDIATELY CONSULT A PHYSICIAN trained in spotting and treating concussions. Some good websites to visit that might help both of you understand the severity of the event. kidshealth.org/teen/safety/first_aid/ concussions, talks to teens about what to expect, or heads up parents.org has video interviews with teens describing their experience with concussion; click on the resources tab.

The Massena Red Raiders, sporting a new Raider school logo and a strong returning corps in 2018, are hoping to get the program back above .500, following a 2-5 regular-season finish in 2017. That’s especially important this year as they face competition within Class A for the first time in recent memory. With a 36-man roster, Canton is expected to give the Red Raiders a serious challenge to their Class A title. Last season, the Raiders edged Canton 31-30 for their lone win on the field, holding off the Bears with keep-away football in the final seven minutes. (The Raiders’ other win was declared

against Tupper Lake which suspended play for a week when injuries dropped its active roster below state minimum levels.)
quarterback/offensive linebacker Zach Goolden, junior tight end/defensive end David Hutchinson and sophomore running back Chris Paige.
While Massena’s roster has dwindled to just 24 active players this season, the Raiders believe all 24 athletes understand and can play the game well. Massena will miss the services of former quarterback Montana Pierce, along with fellow graduates Mike Gardner and Gage Fiasco from last year’s squad. Stepping into their shoes and potential impact players will be senior lineman Dylan Bullock, junior
Coach Nick Zappia returns for his second year at the helm of the Red Raider varsity, with a staff of experienced assistants including Taylor Zappia, Sean Faucher, David Peets and Marc Plante, along with JV coaches Ed Letham and Adrian Taraska. Zappia said the Raiders are “looking for a bounceback year. We’re very young, but looking to improve each week.”

The Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils look to continue their winning ways as the 2018 season begins. Last season, the Blue Devils finished with a 6-1 overall record with their lone loss coming to Gouverneur 28-7 in Week 3. O.F.A. captured the Section X Class C Championship shutting out St. Lawrence Central 28-0. The Devils advanced into the NYSPHSAA Class C Tournament where they defeated Section VII’s Saranac Central 50-20, before falling short to Section II Holy Trinity. O.F.A. is looking to build from a successful 2017 season. The Devils will return with much of last season’s offensive firepower with QB Michael Reed, SE Jackson Troiano and Mecci Johnson, and running backs Stephen Morley, Wyatt Kirby and Hayden Ives.
32 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2018

Newcomers MeSean Johnson, Bailey Benware, Mitchell Brenno and Tristan Lovely are working diligently to make their mark on the offense as well. The Blue Devils’ offense will be the returning O-Line contributors Mason Tabolt, Erik LaMay, Luc LaFlair, Chris Garcia, Mark Barr, Tyler Beaulieu and Cody George. This group will be fortified by newcomers Carson Barney, Garrett Zulauf, Austin Patterson (Sr.) and Austin Jones. The Ogdensburg defense will be led by returning
starters Mason Tabolt (LB), Wyatt Kirby (LB), Hayden Ives (DB), Zach Kimble (LB), Jordan Fennessy (DB), Erik LaMay (DL), Nick Snyder (LB), Luc LaFlair (DL) and Chris Garcia (DL), as well as Jackson Troiano (DB) and Stephen Morley (DB). Ogdensburg Blue Devils’ Head Coach Matt Tessmer commented, “We are looking forward to this season. We have a core group of guys who have been working hard in an effort to build upon the good things we achieved last season. There is also motivation to improve on some things that we can do better. We have many opportunities for players to establish positions for themselves in all areas. We like what we have seen so far. They are a great group of kids. I know the guys are super excited to put on the blue-and-white and play some ball.”

The Potsdam Sandstoners will be looking to stay above .500 and capture the Section X Class B Championship in the 2018 season. The Sandstoners finished a much-improved 2017 campaign with a 4-3 overall record. The blue-and-orange picked up a playoff victory over the Malone Huskies 18-14 in the Section X Class B semifinal, before closing out the 2017 season falling to the Gouverneur Wildcats in the Class B title game. “We grew a lot last year,” said Potsdam Head Coach Jim Kirka. “The team stayed positive, showed a lot of grit and never gave up.” In 2018, there will be a lot of shoes to fill, following the graduation of impact players Cameron Talcott, Brandon Buffham and Kieran Matthis, among

others. Rusher Jacques Kuno opted to attend prep school for this year. Taking up key positions in 2018 will be Zach Kirka and Norwood-Norfolk product Bobby Voss at the quarterback position. When Voss takes the snaps, it’s expected Kirka will line up at running back, providing some flexibility in plays behind the line of scrimmage. Will Coach Kirka stay with his traditional, predominant running game? “We have been working some on our passing game in practice,” he said. “How much of it we use will depend on whether we see success against realgame defenses.” Garrett Mattimore, Phil North, Alex Bush and
Will Varney will return, bringing experience to the Sandstoner lineup. “These guys are very competitive, athletic and understand the game real well. We are going to be a young team in many positions, so these guys will be a big help in bringing along the new players.” As for Sandstoner team this season, “We are fairly deep, but young. They’re all athletes. We just need to stay healthy,” said Kirka. “We should be in the thick of the race this season. I’ll be happy if we keep growing, play smart and don’t take injuries and don’t beat ourselves. I think we’ve got that guys to do that. It’s the end of the season that’s most important to me and whether we made progress.”

The 2018 St. Lawrence Central Larries have the potential to be deep athletically and on the line, with a core group of wide receivers, running backs and a quarterback that are all fast – and potentially dangerous for other teams in Section X. Coach Bruce Truax and the Larries are hoping to continue their rebuilding in 2018, with a combination of speed and power. Last season, the Larries raced off to a 3-0 start, before finishing with a 4-3 regular-season record with victories over Tupper Lake, Massena, Canton and Malone. SLC will be replacing 13 graduates this season, mostly on the defensive front, along with an new

quarterback. The Larries will mix a fairly-balanced roster of veterans and newcomers. Returning for St. Lawrence Central are Alex Bush to anchor the line, the speed and power of Nick Phippen, defensive linebacker Ethan Villnave and Hunter Arquiett who is fast and agile. Getting the starting quarterback nod this season is Anson Weegar. Truax says, “Weegar throws and runs well, and with confidence.” A newcomer to the Larries, Jah Robertson, will also be a strong addition to the offense, starting at fullback. “He’s sleek, very fast, can turn on dime, and can still power forward in the grasp.” Robertson’s speed and agility will
make him a tough player to defend. Although Coach Truax believes he has depth at all positions, the lack of varsity experience could be a concern in some of the early games of the season. Among the keys to success this season are: avoid penalty troubles which plagued the Larries at times last season, keeping on field mistakes to a minimum and letting the game come to them. “If there is a concern, it’s in our aggressiveness, not overplaying and letting the play come to them.” That’s especially important considering SLC will be competing in a tough Class C with the Gouverneur Wildcats and the Ogdensburg Blue Devils.
