Happy 70th Anniversary, ADDISON COUNTY FAIR AND FIELD DAYS By Lou Varricchio
V ERMONT EAGLE EDITOR
Before Lucien Paquette created Field Days, the former Addison County Fair was held annually at the fairgrounds in Middlebury, site of today’s Mary Hogan Elementary School. This photo shows the fair grandstand in the early 1900s. Photo courtesy of Lucien Paquette
ADDISON | August rolls around much too fast but at least the dwindling days of summer mean it’s prime time for Addison County Fair and Field Days. This summer marks 70 years since the start of the current version of Addison County’s ever-popular agricultural fair. It was all those post-World War II shortages that spurred then Addison County’s agricultural agent Lucien Paquette to create a “field days” program in Addison County. As Paquette told us during his 100th birthday in 2016, by the end of the war Addison County’s former fairgrounds, located on the site of today’s Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury, had already closed; local farmers had lost a place to gather, socialize, and exchange ideas while seeing new farm equipment on display.

Scenes from the modern version of Addison County Fair & Field Days. “I did a similar thing earlier with the 4-H Club when I was agent in Grand Isle,” he said. “It was different from Addison County Fair & Field Days, but it was the basic idea—a demonstration day for farmers to see and experience new equipment, techniques on a farm.” Then, add a dash of midway amusements for the kiddies, demolition derbies, animals, farm

gear, educational exhibits, and lots of food vendors, and you have today’s Field Days. Within a year of war’s end, Paquette observed that things previously unavailable to farmers and homemakers were slowly returning to market again. “Wouldn’t it be good to let people learn
Bristol Electronics is the best! They scheduled an on-site visit within days of my call, had a price a week later and started work a week after that. They were finished in a matter of days and since I had a free standing array they even raked and seeded the area around the panels, they get top marks in everything and their customer service is beyond excellent. I highly recommend them if you want the best job for the best price! Lani Nichols - Goshen, VT
about these new things? So I contacted local business people. Everyone liked the idea. They would pay a fee to exhibit their wares. So, the first year we had a two-day event in July, later it was moved to August. We set up a tent on Munger Street in East Middlebury that was 100 feet long. We did that for several years rotating the site between five farms.”
Bristol Electronics installed our 20 panels quickly , efficiently, courteously and just the way we wanted them. Our roof is a difficult one due to our postand-beam construction, but nevertheless , the crew was friendly , informative and just great people. Then in the cloud cover, we began immediately generating electricity! Furthermore (and most importantly for others deciding to install solar), the price was fair , competitive and honest. If we had another home, I'd want them to put the solar panels on that one too! We recommend solar and Bristol Electronics without reservation! Lawrence & Cynthia Jones , South Starksboro

His idea was to hold Field Days on an active farm where equipment could be operated. Both men and women worked with equipment demonstrations even cooking, canning, and other demonstrations, too. “Of course, today, Field Days has grown and we have a permanent site in New Haven, but it has pretty much stayed the way I envisioned it. Today, Addison County Fair & Field Days is noted as the largest agricultural fair in Vermont. We’re proud of the fact.” Paquette also said that he started the popular hand-mowing competition at Field Days in 1978. Other rural fairs around the nation have copied this old-time event. According to Anya Huneke of New Haven, “One of the Field Days contests that stands out most for its unique, nostalgic nature—it’s the
Lucien Paquette, now 102 years old, created today’s Addison County Fair and Field Days following World War 11. Photo by Lou Varricchio hand mowing competition, started by Lucien... For decades, he has run the hand-mowing contest at the fair, for fun, but also to remind people of a simpler time in farming. When Lucien started the fair back in 1948, there were no rides, no hand-mowing contests, only about 2,000 visitors, and a mission of educating the public about agriculture. Now, there is much more to do for the 40,000 or so visitors, but the core message has stayed the same. Lucien Paquette’s children grew up at this fair, and now his grandchildren are doing the same.” ■

'Farming from scratch' By Lou Varricchio
V ERMONT EAGLE EDITOR
When Norma Norris put her famous 30-year-old Norris Berry Farm in Monkton up for sale last year, Stephen and Sarah Park jumped at the opportunity to follow their dream. The operation—bearing the new name Fully Belly Farm starting in 2017—has been an integral part of the community and the Parks wanted to see its traditions continue. “Norma had made a deal with the Vermont Land Trust,” according to Stephen. “The Trust was looking for proposals for the farm. We submitted our proposal and business plan in November. On Jan. 9 last year we got the word.” Lady Luck may have smiled on the Parks, but it’s really their

they’ve already planted next year’s crop of strawberries. The Parks start their day at dawn and continue to work until 9 p.m. as the summer light fades. “This is an amazing bumper crop,” Stephen said. “We’re picking as fast as they ripen.” The parks said that they have heard from many people that there was a concern about Vermont strawberry crops not doing well this summer because of our ridiculously wet spring. However, the berries at Full Belly Farm have never looked better. “We need customers to know that the crop is healthy and ready to be picked like crazy.
Pick Your Own is open in full swing,” the Parks said. The farm stand at Full Belly has everything you’d expect and more. “Summer in Vermont” brand jellies and jams started by Norma Norris, fresh berries, watery melons, vegetables, and fruits, maple syrup, greenhouse plants, flowers, and more. The Parks have 12 men and women on their payroll including two Norris Farm veterans— both hard-working Jamaicans, Denzil and Tony. “We have a great crew,” according to Stephen. “They enjoy the work and take satisfaction in working the land.” ■

'Farmers appear happy with Senate bill' By Lou Varricchio
V ERMONT EAGLE EDITOR
In June, the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives (NCFC) applauded the inclusion of an amendment in the Senate farm bill that would reiterate congressional intent that school food purchases using taxpayer dollars should adhere to the Buy American provisions. “The last several years has seen a marked increase in the amount of foreign-produced food served in schools when comparable Americangrown products are readily available and competitively priced, something that contrary to the
intent of the Buy American provisions in the school lunch and school breakfast programs,” said Chuck Conner, president and CEO of NCFC. “This amendment gives Congress the chance to once again emphasize that these important provisions were included in the programs for a reason and should not be ignored.” “I would like to thank U.S. Senators Smith, Sullivan and Donnelly for their leadership on this issue,” Conner said. “I would like to recognize U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Pat Roberts and Ranking Member Debbie Stabe for their efforts to ensure that the amendment was included in the substitute amendment to the farm bill.” ■

Anson Tebbetts: Dairy farms are part of the Addison County landscape By Anson Tebbetts V ERMONT AGENCY OF AGRICULTURE
As you go about your day, it’s likely you pass a dairy farm – or two or more – along the way. Hidden in hamlets and stretched out in the valleys, Vermont’s farms are part of our daily lives. Although farmers have worked the land for over a century, there may be something unexpected, yet rooted in Vermont, happening behind the scenes. Something innovative. Something progressive. Something that’s making a difference, over time, in our land, waterways, farms, and in our communities. Vermont farmers, along with many others in our state, are working for water quality. A closer look at Vermont farms shows how cutting-edge technology is increas- Anson Tebbetts ingly becoming the new norm. farmers, are actively making improvements on their farms and they are networked for change: In 2017, 3,137 farmers, partners, and members of the public took in 5,011 hours of education at 93 water quality events. Last year, 70 Vermonters received advanced certification in manure application. It’s progress. And that’s just the beginning. In 2017, the State invested $17 million in related water quality projects across all sectors. As part of this investment, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture devoted $5.2 million in technical and financial assistance, engagement and outreach, rules and regulation, and inspection and enforcement —it’s the biggest water quality investment in the history of Vermont. The Agency of Agriculture’s work over the past year includes $1.1 million in grants for on-farm projects such as fencing, manure storage and barnyards, $1.7 million in Clean Water Initiative grants to partners for education, implementation and phosphorus reduction alternatives beyond traditional conservation practices. There are 31 people at the Agency of Agriculture’s water quality division focused on ensuring the regulations are achieved, designing conservation practices, and offering education and technical assistance to help farms make the necessary changes for water quality. Grants and the technical support offered by the agency are a tool for farmers who are motivated for change and all grants require money from the farmer. ■ Note: Anson Tebbetts is the Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets in Montpelier. 'Campaign demonstrates dairy’s impact' By Lou Varricchio V ERMONT EAGLE EDITOR
Dairy has a positive story to tell, affecting not only Vermont, but a wide swath of America. Pictured: Cows feeding at a Nop Brothers farm operation in Salisbury. Photo by Lou Varricchio
Ask a Vermonter about what he or she knows about milk and other dairy products, and they’ll probably tell you that they learned in school that dairy products are an essential part of a healthy diet. But ask them about dairy and the local (and national) economy and he/she will likely give you a glassy stare. According to Bailey Wood of the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), a new storytelling campaign launched last month by the U.S. dairy industry will get the message out about the positive effects of dairy’s economic engine. “The U.S. Dairy Export Council, the IDFA, and the National Milk Producers Federation are collaborating to create the new ‘Got Jobs? Dairy Creates Jobs, Exports Create More’ campaign,” Wood said. “Over the next year, we will share indepth data and compelling narratives featuring hardworking dairy farmers, innovative dairy company employees, resourceful retailers and many others throughout the food supply chain at GotDairyJobs.org.” Wood provided us with several interesting facts about dairy’s enormous impact:

Backed by fair and proactive trade policies, the U.S. dairy industry will continue to keep and create jobs in states across the country. Dairy has a positive story to tell, affecting not only Vermont, but a wide swath of America, creating jobs and tax revenue in rural, suburban and urban communities, according to Tom Vilsack, former U.S. Agriculture Secretary. ■
