MIDDLEBURY | Mike Gingras grew up in Addison County on a dairy farm. While a student in the sixth grade, he took an early interest in drafting and building construction. From that point forward through highschool, he took drafting courses which eventually led him to attend Vermont Technical College. There, he obtained a degree in Architectural and Engineering Design. For nearly 24 years, Gingras owned and operated a design-build company in Addison County. Throughout this time he built over 300 homes throughout the northeastern U.S. Following the downsizing of Connor Homes in Middlebury, Gingras and a group of building professionals put their heads and talents to-
Residential space-planning consulting. She and other staffers also work on interior elevations and plans, cabinetry, stairs, fireplace mantels and specialty millwork. In the area architectural design, architectural designers Joe Murphy, Bryan Waters, and Theodore Gillen, III, provide schematic level plans for builder pricing, full sets of construction drawings and specifications to obtain engineering stamps, structural framing plans, material take-offs and cut lists, as well as as-built plans.Meanwhile, Kyle Gingras, John Gingras Jason Nickerson and Jeff Stanley are the business’ talented furniture and cabinets makers, carpenters, millers, According to Gingras the business focus
of Addison Residential which sets it apart is its exceptional design and engineering services and the ability to produce specialty millwork at a nearby site leased from G. “I got the idea during a four-year excursion across the U.S. working as a carpenter. The shed market all across the country has been supplying flimsy, ugly outbuildings with few choices,” he told the Eagle. “After studying firsthand the many architectural styles around the country, including Frank Lloyd Wright, I came up with several cottage designs. From the earliest beginnings ,experimenting with dog houses, I knew I could provide a superior product using native lumber and Vermont craftsmen.” Today, Mongano’s line includes tiny cottages, houses on wheels, get-away cabins, sheds, barns, sugar shacks, even a solar cabin for “green” off-the-grid living which includes a controller, batteries and P.V. panel. » Tiny Houses Cont. on pg. 5

» Tiny Houses Cont. from pg. 4 Mongano said that in 2004, Jamaica Cottage Shop, Inc. purchased a manufacturing facility two miles north of where his company srated in Jamaica in South Londonderry. “Our current 70,000 square foot factory allows all products to be built indoors. We expanded the product line and developed the cottage sheds to include the current pre-cut post and beam kits.” Today, Jamaica Cottage Shop produces a surprising variety of top-quality wood sheds and cottages. “We ship all our creations such as our prefab storage sheds, prefab cottage kits, wood shed kits and more, all over the United States and Canada, and beyond,” according to Mongano. Built by Vermont tradesmen, each structure is crafted with a personality of its own creating a distinctive and aesthetically pleasing sight that will enhance any landscape. “We offer complete design-to-finish solutions for clients searching for a special sanctuary,” he said. “And I’ve come up with 10 reasons why Jamaica Cottage Shop is your best choice.” Mongano’s 10 reasons to choose his Vermont- made products are as follows: 1. Made in the USA. Our Vermont craftsmanship and locally sourced, sustainably harvested rough-sawn lumber ensure that you will be receiving a product that surpasses standards. 2. Easy to assemble kits developed with beginners in mind. 3. Step by step plans. 4. Free shipping for kits in most of North America. 5. Budget sensitive, knowledgeable and friendly staff. 6. Huge display yard open every day during daylight hours. 7. Highly customizable. 8. There are several financing options possible. 9. Classic post and beam framing: sturdy and strong buildings that will last generations. 10. We can meet or beat any competitor pricing. To learn about these Vermont-made structures, visit online at Jamaicacottageshop.com. For directions to visit the show yard, call 802.297.3760 or email Mongano at Design@JamaicaCottageshop.com. ■ Tiny cottages, sheds, barns even a solar-powered cabin kit are available from the made-in-Vermont Jamaica Cottage Shop. Exclusively Vermont Wood sets the standard in sustainability, quality By Lou Varricchio STA FF W RITER
BRISTOL | Vermont is visible worldwide as much for its environmental concern as it is for its environmental regulations. No matter where you stand regarding government’s role in the matter, that passion for environmental standards has also become part of many business missions in the home improvement and building sector here.
Noted for its superb wood products that are harvested by the most environmentally friendly methods, woods from Exclusively Vermont Wood Products and Lathrop’s Maple Supply, LLC, come from all around the state and from the firm’s own timberland in northern Addison County. And at the firm’s outlet located of Route 116 in Bristol, consumers will discover the products are also among the most affordable. According to fifth-generation lumberman Tom Lathrop, who founded the business with wife Pamela, all wood goes
to market only after streamed-lined processing of sustainably harvested Vermont timber. The company’s process saves on fuel resources, ensures quality control, and provides builders and others a “one source responsibility,” as Lathrop says. “For over 125 years my forefathers have been cutting timber and sawing logs in Bristol. Exclusively Vermont Wood Products selects the best in local hardwood species: Aspen, ash, basswood, beech, birch, black cherry, elm (a rarity in many northeastern states), hickory, red maple, sugar maple, red oak, and white oak. Softwoods are also chosen with care and include pine and white cedar. Lathrop points out that his lumber operation includes a variety of products and services which include premium kiln-dried hardwood and softwood lumber for cabinets, furniture, and more. The operation’s select hardwood includes flooring, longlength plank style. There’s also “character” wood flooring, long-length plank style, wide pine flooring and lumber, also V-joint paneling. Add to the list quarter- and rift-cut flooring and lumber and you have one-stop shopping when it comes to all kinds of building needs. “We can customize floors for special widths and sort of color at minimal fees,” Lathrop says. » Vermont Wood Cont. on pg. 8

Six ways to bring warmth into your home this fall With the shorter days and cooler nights of fall can come the urge to hibernate. But first prepare yourself and your home for the season with these cozy and warm accents that will make time spent indoors cozier.
1. INCORPORATE METALLIC DÉCOR
While you’re breaking out the pumpkins, cornstalks and cornucopias, take a different approach this season and incorporate copper or brass accents. These metallic items will elevate décor, and the orange and yellow tones will complement the changing leaves outside. Try picking out a unique candelabra or vase or small decorative pieces to style the room.
2. MAKEOVER THE FIREPLACE
Fireplace season is on the horizon, so start thinking about new ways to make it the focal point of a room. Try painting it with
a subtle whitewash for a look that will instantly revive brick and brighten the space. Before you get started, prep the fireplace by scrubbing brick with a wire brush to remove any residue. Then, tape off any areas you don’t want painted to prevent paint bleed and achieve professional-looking results.
3. LAYER, LAYER, LAYER
Bare floors can make your home feel chilly. Warm up a space by layering area rugs on hardwood floors or to an already carpeted area. Not only will this add color and texture to a room, the extra cushioning will ensure feet avoid the cold, so you can keep your slippers tucked away.
4. UPDATE THE GUEST BEDROOM
With the holidays on the horizon, there’s no better time to give your guest bedroom a cozy update. Surprise overnight guests by paint-
ing the room a moody green or blue that is on trend and sets a relaxing tone. Don’t forget to incorporate little touches like books or a plant on the nightstand to make them feel at home.
5. UPDATE WINDOW COVERINGS
Heavy drapes keep out drafts and make a room feel luxurious. Switch out summer sheers for curtains with a heavier weight, or layer drapes for an elegant look.
you’ll want to tape off the wall next to the trim so your handiwork looks like that of a professional. When painting trim, opt for a semigloss paint to make elements stand out. Grab your pumpkin spice latte and start adding little touches like these to your home, for a cozy and stylish season.
6. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF WHITE PAINT
Vibrant doesn’t always have to mean using bold colors. Make a space feel brand new again by repainting wood trim a crisp white color. It may seem like a tedious task, but with a little effort, you can completely transform a room. Start by filling in any imperfections, sanding and cleaning the surfaces to be painted. Then,

5 home maintenance projects to tackle this fall Fall is the perfect time to complete those pesky home maintenance projects left on your to do list.
If you’ve been putting off these chores, you’re not alone, but it could cost you. In fact, a national survey from Erie Insurance shows many Americans are putting themselves and their homes at financial risk by delaying important home maintenance tasks. Make sure you’re protected by focusing on these five areas:
• THE ROOF
Twenty-three percent of homeowners admit they never inspect their roof or have it inspected unless there is a problem, according to the Erie Insurance survey. Unfortunately, replacing a roof is also one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have if not maintained properly. Nationally, the average homeowner spends about $6,600 to install a new roof, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000. Don’t be stuck with a hefty roof repair bill. Have it inspected to see if any shingles are damaged and need to be replaced. The fall season is the optimal time to do so, since roofing is best installed when temperatures are cooler. Plus, you’ll catch any problems before winter weather kicks in.
• THE GUTTERS
Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to major issues like uneven floors, cracks in walls and interior water damage. This type of claim, also known as seepage, is a maintenance issue and often not covered under your home insurance policy. To prevent any major issues, clean gutters at least twice a year in fall and spring.
MARK TRUDEAU, LTD.
• THE DRYER EXHAUST DUCT
Does it take you two to three cycles to dry a load of laundry? If so, you may need to clean your dryer vent. One in five (21 percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer ducts, unless they have a problem. But lint build-up can catch fire easily. Over 15,000 dryer fires occurred nationwide from 2010-2014, with the majority being ignited by dust, fiber and lint, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Avoid this disaster with a thorough cleaning at least once a year.

Sump pumps remove excess water from homes that would otherwise cause property damage. It’s important to clean a sump pump and its pit annually to keep basements dry and help prevent mold growth and water damage. Do this maintenance project in fall to help protect against heavy rainfalls and accumulated melting snow and ice of winter. Now that you have your checklist, it’s time to roll up your sleeves while it’s still nice outside. Whether you’re a DIYer or prefer hiring a professional, crossing these projects off your to-do list will help ensure you’re safe and secure before temperatures drop. ■

Erie Insurance found nearly half (46 percent) of people who own a home with a fireplace never have their chimneys cleaned. However, uncleaned chimneys are a leading cause of structure fires, reports the National Fire Protection Association. So, get the chimney cleaned before the cold weather hits and you find yourself tossing logs in the hearth to keep the house toasty, and then have it cleaned annually.
