RUTLAND— When Greg Cunningham bought a vacation home in Enosburg Falls in 1992, he knew he never wanted to leave. “Vermont was my getaway. A visit filled me with intense joy,” he told Watchdog. Cunningham and his wife fell in love with the quaint, remote town in northern Vermont. Cunningham, an electrical engineer living in Toronto, grew up north of the Vermont border, in the Canadian province of Quebec. While out-of-state homeowners often live like tourists, Cunningham and his wife became part of the community. They visited six to seven times a year, for Continued on page 15

RUTLAND — Some Rutland-area business leaders have expressed worries over regional trends in the decline of skilled workers, an increase in groups in need of government assistance—such as incoming refugees—crime, illegal drugs, high energy costs, and high taxes. But now Rutland-area business leaders are looking for help from regional professionals to help launch a campaign that is hoped to go a long way in addressing and possibly reversing some of these trends. DECK THE REFERENCE HALL — Staff members of the Ilsley Public Library in downtown Middlebury took a few moments to stand beside their towering 2016 Christmas tree late last week. The 13-year-old Vermont-grown conifer is set up and decorated in the library’s reference hall. Standing by the tree are (left to right) Susan Gowen, circulation, Mike Racine, custodian, Stephanie Nadeau, administrative assistant, Tricia Allen, youth services librarian, Chris Kirby, adult services librarian, and David Bishop. Alpine slopes, art go together in Vermont By Lou Varricchio lou@addison-eagle.com

RIPTON — According to Jennifer Williams of the Vermont Arts Council, the joys of exhilarating winter sports aren’t enough when it comes to appreciating Vermont in its approaching postautumnal phase. “Today’s ski resorts and surrounding communities offer a cultural immersion that is equal parts pride and pleasure,” she said. In a new push to get the word out about Vermont’s ski resorts, Williams and Sarah Wojcik of Ski Vermont want the public to know that alpine realms aren’t just for apres players—they’re also exhibition halls for emerging and established Vermont artists. “Tastefully outfitted lodges and local music Continued on page 13
