Student headed to West Point program

By Thom Randall @denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ North Warren High School junior Daniel Hill, who has dreamed of a career in the military since childhood, has been chosen to participate in the 2013 West Point Leaders Experience.

The seminar, set for June, is held primarily for prospective candidates for

attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Hill was among 500 chosen for the oneweek leadership seminar out of about 4,000 qualifying applicants nationwide.

Among these top-achieving students, he was again selected to attend after the three sessions were reduced to one earlier this year due to federal budget cutbacks.

Daniel is the son of Margaret Hill of Adirondack and Dan Hill of the same hamlet in the town of Horicon. Margaret

Hill is an employee of the North Warren School District, and Dan Hill serves as a patrol officer for Warren County Sheriff’s office.

Daniel Hill Jr. said that he is looking forward to the leadership session, he’s hoping to attend West Point in fall 2014, and has his sights set on a military career.

day May 14 to purchase a boat washing station.

The portable station is to be employed in a voluntary boat inspection, washing and decontamination program using trained lake stewards.

Nightp aving prompts one-lane traffic in Warrensburg

WARRENSBURG Ñ Nighttime paving of Rte. 9 through downtown Warrensburg will be restricting traffic to one alternating lane Monday through Friday nights for at least another week, the state Department of Transportation has announced.

Paving work and the alternating lane restriction will last from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weeknights from 1st Avenue to Old State Road, just south of Warrensburg’s border with the Town of Lake George near I-87 Northway Exit 23.

Parking along Main St. and state Rte. 9 is also prohibited from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. while the paving project is under way.

During the roadwork, properties in the area will remain accessible to residents, business patrons, delivery vehicles and emergency responders, according to the state authorities.

The work is expected to be completed before Memorial Day. Daytime pavement work on this stretch is now complete.

NWCS students to explain MOAS program in forum thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ Students of North Warren High School who participate in the Model of American States (MOAS) curriculum will soon be conducting a presentation about their travels and program relating to international relations and governmental issues.

The program, set for 7 p.m.

May 22 in the Town of Chester Municipal Center auditorium, is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of the Town of Chester and the Horicon Historical Society.

Students in the MOAS program are assigned countries to represent in a convention with students from other schools.

In preparing for the MOAS meetup, they delve into the local country’s history, culture and politics.

This year, North Warren students are representing and learning about Bolivia and Chile.

The students involved in MOAS annually travel to Washington D.C. to visit both country’s embassies and meet with the ambassadors of the two nations.

In the May 22 program in Chestertown, the students will be demonstrating how they will be discussing world issues and present legislative resolutions in their regional convention in June at SUNY Plattsburgh, at which 15 high schools are expected to be represented. If the measures are passed, they will be forwarded to the Organization of Ameri-

can States and presented to the international representatives.

The next program to be presented by the Chester Historical Society is set for 7 p.m.

June 26 at in the Chester Museum of Local History Ñ on the second floor of the Chester Municipal Center. The event serves as an open house for the museum.

The program features Stan Malecki explaining how handmade quilts covertly communicated information about the Underground Railroad. Entitled Ò Communication without Words,Ó the session is to include some of the historic quilts of the 1800s. Malecki is a former teacher and director

of the historic Parks-Bentley House in South Glens Falls.

Refreshments will be served and all are welcome at any of the programs, or at the Historical Society meetings, held on the second Thursday of the month. Suggestions for future programs are always welcome.

The Museum of Local History will be open from this summer 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Chester Municipal Center is located at 6307 state Rte. 9 across from the Grand Union supermarket.

Girlfriends’ Getaway featured array of activities BOLTON LANDING Ñ Girlfriends Getaway Weekend on May 17 through 19 at the Sagamore Resort was a considerable success, considering its robust attendance and full schedule of activities.

Sponsored by the Bolton Chamber of Commerce, the event has been embraced by the local business community.

More than 100 women traveled from not only the Capital District and Manhattan but all over northeastern U.S. to attend. Participants also came from Florida and as far away as Illinois for this fourth annual women’s weekend at The Sagamore.

Friday evening’s programs included a presentation of raptors and other predatory birds by Trish Marki of Bolton, event founder Wauneata Waller said. Among the birds introduced to the women were various owls, a red-ailed hawk, a falcon and a Eurasian Eagle Owl. “The women were enchanted by the magnificent birds,” Waller said.

Next, local psychotherapist and author Meghan Lemery gave a lecture on how important it is to love oneself, a recurring theme of the weekend.

A reception on the hotel’s enclosed terrace featured belly dancing, hula hooping, tarot readings Ñ all with a sweeping view of Lake George in the background.

Saturday, women attending chose from more than a dozen workshops, everything from chi walking, belly dancing and Ò energy medicineÓ to prosperity, nutrition, and chair yoga.

Keynote Speaker Benita Zahn spoke of the importance of women taking care of themselves, so they can be available to the people that depend on them.

The Sagamore served a three-course gourmet luncheon, and event Emcee Bobby Dick presided over a fashion show featuring spring designs carried by boutiques in Bolton Landing.

Lake George Kayak Co. offered clinics in stand-up paddleboarding as well as kayaking techniques. The Sembrich hosted an open house for the women to tour the museum Ñ offering a

Warrensburg Central budget avoids program cuts

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ The state budget announced weeks ago threw a lifeline to Warrensburg Central School District’s 2013-14 local spending plan, up for a public vote from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 21 in the high school gym lobby.

The Warrensburg School District budget calls for spending $19.14 million, with $8.14 million

To the Editor: Why will it cost Lake George Central School District taxpayers over $23,208 to educate each student next year?

Perhaps it’s because we’ll be paying $147,813 for a gym teacher and $14,279 for a part-time volleyball coach.

Perhaps it’s because taxpayers have been paying up to $24,328 for health care per employee, or maybe the excessively expensive student-teacher ratio of 8.4-to-1 or employee benefits that average 76.4 percent of salary and often exceeds two times salary.

For decades, the Lake George School Board has operated behind closed doors. This has aggravated an embarrassing board personnel problem and placed the teachers’ unions’ interests ahead of the students or the community.

The time has come to elect a more transparent school board that is open to preparing our children for the serious demands of their future, at a cost we can afford.

Examples? Distance learning could provide the declining student population Ñ a loss of

Another example is the bonding of buses and potentially an expensive new bus garage.

The Board has declined to study privatization of transportation. If privatized, the operator wouldn’t be bound by the Taylor Laws that double the cost of public works projects like a bus garage or required to pay excessively for employee benefits.

For a transparent and fiscally responsible school board which will place the students’ interest first, please vote for Jim Ferris, Michelle McKnight-Lambert and one-term incumbent, Steve Jackoski.

The Adirondack Park Agency, the state Dept. of Environmental Conservation and private environmental organizations are bulldozing ahead toward this goal. Few children remain in the central Adirondacks. Local schools are closing. Deliberate depopulation and cultural genocide are succeeding.

The U.S. Dept. of State declared several years ago that great progress is being made in the implementation of the Biosphere Reserve through various regional entities.

Local government should refuse to be a tool of internationalist environmental groups, tying the future of their communities to a bit of state cash and high-sounding planning. Don’t fall for a slick program under ICLEI. The environmental juggernaut is incredibly complicated. The dismay of finding another multi-million dollar tentacle grasping at our rights and future keeps recurring.

Special Thanks to Bill Woodward Austin Ross was born in Vermont in 1842 but moved to Horicon at the age 5. He farmed with his family and in February of 1864, he married Jane Barton. At the end of August of that year, with Jane pregnant with their first child, Austin enlisted with the Union army.

Austin came back to Horicon after the war to his wife Jane and new son Harry. He resumed farming and soon Jane’s father, Judson, got him involved in lumbering. He had 2 or 3 steamboats on Brant Lake, used to move logs from one end of the lake to the other. He became know as “Captain” Ross. Harry worked with his father on the farm and in his 20’s married Miss Minnie Duell. They had 2 daughters, Beatrice & Kate. After Minnie passed away, Harry married Hattie Streeter, a widow who had 2 daughters, Ella & Marion.

Austin and his wife, Jane, ran a boarding house called Ross House for summer visitors and local workers at the north end of Brant Lake. He served the people of Horicon in many positions including Supervisor, Justice of the Peace and Postmaster.

Austin Ross will be one of several citizens to be recognized during the North Warren Celebration on August 24th.

To the Editor: It is too easy to dismiss the arguments of the tea party members as simplistic fear of one-world socialist government orchestrated through the United Nations, as some opponents to Washington County tea party resolutions seem to think, according to news reports.

The laundry list of liberal visions in the UN Agenda 21 document promoted by International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (based in Oakland, California and headquartered in Bonne, Germany) for its sustainable communities project that arouses the citizen group’s ire includes extreme rural land use controls with concentrated population centers.

Farmers markets: shop while supporting the community

I

t’s that time of year again. Time to enjoy life without layers, time to enjoy the extended days and time to enjoy the bounty of our local farmers’ harvests. And in the North Country, it’s easy to do all three.

Last Saturday, many farmers markets throughout the region, including the Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market, opened for the season. They will continue to spring up like wildflowers, and the ones that didn’t open last week will be opening soon enough, with the final stragglers ready for business by the end of June.

It’s true that many fruits and vegetables won’t be ready until later in the season, but a visit to a farmers market this time of year will reveal more than fresh produce. Beneath the bustling pavilion at the Plattsburgh farmers market, the vendors proudly stand by their wares, products like candles, jewelry, soaps, art, honey, wine, Adirondack chairs and wildflower teas. Their products might not have been harvested in the same way an apple is plucked from a tree, but they were all crafted locally, by people many consider to be family, friends or neighbors.

This time of year there is a sparse selection of straight-from-the-ground edibles available, too, such as some of the hardier leafy greens and a few plants harvested from our local forests, like wild leeks and wild ginger. As summer continues, the variety of veggies will only increase as crops reach their peak, and the best part is, their yield is not only delicious—it’s affordable.

We have written about the benefits of buying local before, and that sentiment is still as important now as it was in the past. But farmers markets aren’t entirely self-serving. Sure, the farmers and crafters benefit from an increase in sales, and why shouldn’t they? They are providing us with healthy food grown in a sustainable manner at a low cost, but the function of these markets also serves the consumer, and the community.

Take a trip to downtown Plattsburgh this Saturday and see for yourself. There is a feeling of intimacy there, a connection as the buyer speaks to the producer first hand and learns about how the product came to be. The smooth

surface of that black walnut bowl wasn’t mass produced in a factory somewhere overseas, it was made by hand from a tree that was destined for a wood chipper. The grapes used to make that wine are cold-hardy, much like the citizens of our region. There is a woman living in the town of Keene who makes soaps, bath salts and bug balms, and she will tell you all about how her concoctions can relieve stress, tension, and insect bites.

Through those interactions, farmers markets begin to take on a greater purpose and become a community gathering space where relationships, and trust, are formed between the consumer and the producer. Try speaking to one of the many farmers present and ask him or her questions. Some will offer advice on gardening, and others can tell you about their Community Supported Agriculture program, where consumers can purchase a share of the farm and receive a bounty of goods each week. In many cases, it’s like purchasing your vegetables for the year all at once. Some CSA’s offer meat, maple syrup, honey, milk and cheeses, too. And for those who need assistance, most local farmers markets accept food stamps and WIC coupons.

But the benefits of farmers markets don’t end at the pavilion. Since visitors to the Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market are already downtown, many of them will grab a bite to eat or explore some of Plattsburgh’s many fine businesses while they are there. The draw of the market also draws people to those places, and in the process it neatly ties together many of the things most Plattsburgh residents desireÑ a thriving downtown built upon a high quality of life, high quality local products, and a strong sense of community.

Turning Back the Pages

By Jean Hadden 100 Years Ago - May 1913 Death came in an instant

Two men met a horrible death and another one was probably fatally injured on the morning of April 1, 1913 by the breaking of a boom on a derrick used by the Cummins Construction Co. at the new dam at Corinth. The victims were Dennis Minahan, 17 Ñ instantly killed; Benjamin Rozelle, 23 Ñ removed to Saratoga Hospital where he later died; and Henry Springer, 21 Ñ seriously injured internally and also removed to the same hospital. All three men were residents of Corinth.

In swinging a load of stone into place the boom broke and fell striking all three men and pinning Minahan beneath. His body was terribly crushed, one hand was cut off and his head was badly bruised. Death was instantaneous.

There were no witnesses. It was some time before Rozelle’s body could be extricated from beneath the beam. He was suffering intensely and one of his legs had been severed close to his body. He died soon after his arrival at the hospital. It is not yet known if Springer will survive.

Adventure bound

Roscoe Hadden and Paul Smith of Warrensburgh started off the morning of May 12, 1913 for Edmonton, Alberta in the great Canadian northwest where they will take up homesteads of 160 acres each. Both young men are single and will either find wives there or come back after them after they have homes established.

They went to Montreal and took the Canadian Pacific for the remainder of their long journey.

The distance from Warrensburgh is 2,500 miles.

They expect to reach their destination Saturday morning, May 17, 1913. (Note - Roscoe Hadden was the son of Fred and Harriet Hadden. He grew up on Hadden Hill, now called Ridge St. Family legend stated that he ended up in Shawnee (possibly Shones), North Dakota, married a school teacher, lived and died there. He must have had a change of plans as North Dakota is a long way from Alberta, Canada.)

Child succumbs to fever

Louise Cordia Wilsey, 12, one of the twin daughters of Ludwick and Ruth Hill Wilsey, died at her home of scarlet fever at the Fairlawn

tract in Warrensburgh. A sweet, lovable child, she endeared herself to all who knew her. Besides her parents, she is survived by three sisters. Internment was made in the Wilsey Cemetery at Darrowsville near the family’s former home.

Walked away, never came back

Dennis McCarthy, 75, of Riverbank, died suddenly May 4, 1913, while walking about his farm. He was absent from his house for several hours and his son Charles went to see what had detained him and found him lying on the cold ground. It was apparent that he had died suddenly and without a struggle, probably of heart failure.

He leaves a widow, three daughters and three sons. Internment was in the Catholic Cemetery, North Creek.

Going for a stroll

Edward Payson Weston, 75, the man who astonished the world in 1910 by walking from ocean to ocean in 76 days, will be on another hike soon to Minneapolis, Minn. He will leave New York City the first week of June, 1913 from the campus of the College of the City of New York, which will be his official starting place.

He says that he is in better shape now than he was 10 years ago and that he should to be in Minneapolis by Aug. 2, 1913 where he expects to lay the cornerstone of the Athletic Club’s new $4 million home there.

On his journey he will be accompanied by an automobile and two attendants who will provide for his safety and look after his comfort.

His only purpose in undertaking the long walk is to demonstrate to the public that more men are killed by lack of exercise than by it and that a man should eat moderately to live longer and live well. He is able to do at age 75 feats that would tax the strength of the average man of 50.

From Feb. 22 to March 4, 1861, Weston walked 478 miles from Boston, Mass. to Washington, D.C. Ñ in 10 days and 10 hours. He arrived in Washington at 5 p.m., and was strong enough to attend Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural ball that evening. The walk was the outcome of a bet on the 1860 presidential election, and Weston had bet on the wrong candidate. It ended up that President Lincoln gave him congratulatory handshakes at the ball.

Bargains likely at Thurman sale

Visitors traveling the winding rural roads of Thurman this weekend are likely to discover plenty of bargains and perhaps a coveted antique here and there Ñ as the Thurman Townwide Garage Sale will be held Friday May 17 through Sunday May 19.

Dozens of yard sales are occurring, and everything from household goods, tools, vehicles and various collectibles are to be offered for sale by Thurman residents.

Local motorists are urged to so use caution driving Thurman roads, as many tourists annually frequent our area during the sale. A shopper may be so excited about their recent find that they may forget to check the road before crossing it, or an unruly child may dart out into a roadway in front of a motorist. So be cautious, and Happy bargain hunting!

Sales to benefit EMS, Wheeler

Thurman Station Association will be hosting a benefit on May 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Claudia Jean Wheeler of Wolf Pond Stables. Breakfast-style foods will be available from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and lunch will feature a $6 one-price buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hot and cold beverages and take-out meals will be available.

Thurman EMS will be holding a tag sale Saturday May 18 at their squad building on High Street. In addition to the array of donated items they have for sale, they are also selling hotdogs, hamburgers plus hot and cold beverages.

County bicentennial events set

On March 12, 1813, state legislators signed into law a bill that would spin off this area from what was then Washington County to form Warren County, named for Revolutionary War General Joseph Warren.

To celebrate Warren County’s bicentennial, the Thurman town government is holding Old Home Days on Friday June 14 and Saturday June 15. The celebration features live music, an encampment of historical re-enactors, children’s activities, food and fireworks.

Friday’s activities begin at 5 p.m. with a ceremonial rededication of the Thurman Veterans’ Memorial that stood in front of the town hall years ago. To occur on Flag Day, the ceremony is to be held in the pavilion on Veteran’s Memorial Field behind the Thurman Town Hall. We hear that the American Legion will take part in the ceremony.

Hoddy Ovitt and the Warren County Ramblers, a local favorite mountain-music band, will be performing from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. following the ceremony.

Solid gold dinner plates

The Hon. Lewis W. Emerson off Warrensburgh and Manager Albert Thieriot of the Fort William Henry Hotel, Lake George, along with many other prominent men of Northern New York, recently attended an elaborate banquet on the second floor of the sheriff’s jury, held at the Hotel Knickerbocker, New York at which the assessment was $60 a plate. The total number of guests were 450 and the banquet was served on the famous solid gold dinner service of the hotel Knickerbocker.

Jed Smith, self-made man

Ò UncleÓ Jed Smith has the reputation of being the best known character in the neighborhood of Horicon. He has the well-earned reputation of knowing Brant Lake better than any other bass fisherman in the world. He is the town’s tooth extractor, an authority on bee culture and is the town telephone repair man. He is also one of the best storytellers in the woods, being gifted with more than his share of that mixture of native philosophy and original use of words that is characteristic of men who have commuted with nature all of their lives.

Jed has had a long and varied career and many real life adventures. Growing up he was the 13th of 14 children in the Smith family and he had to hustle to keep things going. Jed’s father, the elder Smith, had little time for family details as he was also hustling to be able to be successful in life and keep food on the table.

His children grew up pretty much on their own, taking the hard knocks as they came and getting little sympathy from him. The old man was able to leave his family a goodly inheritance when it finally became time for him to meet his maker.

Jed Smith is uncle to most of the town as almost all of his brothers and sisters grew up and got married and produced large families of their own. Jed says, Ò You would be surprised to know how many nephews and nieces I have ’bout here.” So Jed is indeed “the town uncle.”

An infant son of Allie Pasco of Thurman, formerly of Warrensburgh, died May 26, 1913 leaving a twin sister.

A small encampment of re-enactors is scheduled to recreate life from centuries ago Friday and Saturday. We hear that there will also be a re-enactor portraying local historical figure Stephen Griffing on Saturday, June 15, at about 3 p.m. at the field.

Concerts return for summer 2013

Thurman will once again be holding the Summer Concert series Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. during the Months of July and August Ñ and vendors are now being sought for the accompanying Market in the Park. Reserving a sale table is free to Thurman residents and only takes a call to the Town Supervisor’s office to reserve a space. This is an ideal way to sell your wares or fresh produce from your garden or handmade crafts.

Additionally, Supervisor Wood is also looking for groups in town who would like to sponsor concessions for a few of the concerts in the series. Any group representative interested should call Evelyn at 623-9649.

Activities and events in the hills

Giffy’s Bar-B-Q is coming back to Warrensburg Elementary School on Friday, June 7. The event will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the front circular parking lot of the Elementary School.

In conjunction with the above event, the school will be embracing our country traditions by having a Ò Plots for PRIDEÓ event. Plots will be mapped out on a grid and available for $5 each. A cow will then be brought in from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and the largest Ò cow pieÓ to be dropped on the grid wins the particular sponsor of the plot 25 percent of the proceeds. The remainder goes to the school’s PRIDE program, which rewards good behavior at school.

The public vote on Warrensburg Central School District’s 2013-2014 budget will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 21 at Warrensburg High School.

The Thurman Quilting Group holds their meetings every Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the town hall. Bring your knitting, sewing, or quilting projects and make some new friends.

The Thurman transfer station’s hours of operation are noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and you can purchase required bags for household trash either at the Thurman Town Hall or the transfer station.

The county-sponsored senior bus service to Glens Falls runs on the second and fourth Friday of every month. It will next run Friday, May 24 and is free to seniors age 60 and over. Those who wish to go should call Laura by Wednesday, May 22 at 623-9281.

Ladies who enjoy looking at pretty hats should visit Miss Janet Hatten’s millinery store at Park Square in Warrensburgh. She has a handsome line and prices are reasonable.

A chill in the air

Warrensburgh experienced two of the coldest May nights in the Eastern states in 29 years, according to weather reports. In New York city the mercury stood at 36 degrees. In some parts of New England ice half an inch thick formed.

This degree of cold, coming after weeks of summer-like weather is expected to damage the fruit crop.

Forest fires are reported from various parts of the Adirondacks and great damage is anticipated unless rain comes soon.

Public hearings set for Lake George Invasive Species Prevention plan

LAKE GEORGE Ñ The Lake George Park Commission has released its proposed plan to curb invasive species in Lake George, and the agency is soon holding two public hearings to receive public comments.

The first hearing is to be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 in the Fort William Henry Conference Center in Lake George, and the second will be on Wednesday, June 12 at 6 p.m. at the Best Western in Ticonderoga.

“This has been a very open and significant effort over the past 18 months, and we look forward to the public’s comments on our plan,Ó Park Commission Chairman Bruce Young said in a prepared statement. Ò These hearings will help shape the Commission’s decisions on how to proceed forward.Ó The plan presents alternatives to keeping new invasive species out of Lake George, focusing that boats coming from other waterways. Options for prevention include a voluntary program of boat launch stewards and public education, a self-certification program for boaters, and a mandatory inspection program for trailered boats prior to launch into Lake George. Each alternative is discussed in the Plan, identifying the likely cost of that option, how it could be implemented, and exploring the impact on Lake George boaters.

The public comment period on the plan will remain open until June 25. The plan can be viewed at: www.lgpc.state. ny.us.

In addition to teaching painting and drawing at the School of the Arts in New York City, she is a visiting professor at Pratt Institute.

and about $1 million has been spend to curb the population of the invasive species, believed to hinder tourism and recreation.

Chester board members voted to purchase a washing station at an anticipated price of about $20,000 and position it initially at the townowned Loon Lake boat launch. The approved measure calls for soliciting bids on a portable unit that matches the specifications of the Lake George Park Commission’s stations already in use.

The station may be repositioned elsewhere in the future as the needs for boat decontamination evolve, Chester Supervisor Fred Monroe said Tuesday night.

Monday, a proposal raised at a joint workshop meeting of the Horicon and Chester town boards called for a boat washing station to be located about halfway between Loon Lake in Chester and Brant Lake in Horicon Ñ and that

Horicon would pay for half the station’s cost.

This idea was shelved by the two boards at least temporarily after hearing from Park Commission Executive Director Dave Wick that boaters weren’t likely to have their boats decontaminated if the equipment wasn’t positioned near where they were launching their watercraft.

After hearing from marina owners and others that there was insufficient room to host a washing station at the boat launches on the two lakes, the Horicon board endorsed the idea to boost the hours of their lake stewards, an action taken officially by the Chester town board a day later. In Chester, stewards will be on duty from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays Sundays through the boating season. The board also authorized Monroe to hire another steward to be on duty from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Monroe said town officials would be working with consultants to review the possibility of a boat certification system that would call for boats to have inspectors affix seals on cables holding boats to trailers, certifying them as en-

vironmentally safe to launch. The seals could be color-coded, indicating which waterway they were pulled from, Monroe said, to allow re-introduction to the same water body without re-certification.

The entire program would be voluntary, but local officials expect that most all boaters would comply.

At the Chester meeting Tuesday, Jane Smith said that the town should determine whether a water quality grant application that the town had submitted to the state could be amended to request funding for an additional boat washing station — and Monroe said he’d look into the possibility.

The additional station would likely be used by both Chester and horicon, and be made available to other towns, Monroe said.

In an update to the Chester board on a parallel effort to combat invasives, Monroe reported that the chemical Renovate was applied Tuesday in the south end of Loon Lake to combat Eurasian Milfoil Ñ after months of delays in permitting from state agencies.

He said the lake level had been decreased and a curtain was in place to minimize the spread

of the chemical and maximize its destruction of the pernicious lakeweed. Monroe continued that the chemical was used at its lowest feasible concentration.

The cost of applying Renovate had been budgeted at $85,000 but will likely reach $95,000 due to the extra costs of permitting and a series of follow-up tests required by the state Dept. of Environmental Conservation and the Adirondack Park Agency.

The lake measures 584 acres, and 15 acres in the southern basin are being treated, Monroe said. Elsewhere in the lake, milfoil is under control after an effective effort to remove it has been implemented, he said.

Hand harvesting and installing mats on the lakebottom have curbed milfoil’s spread, he said, noting the goal was to reduce ongoing milfoil control expenses from nearly $60,000 annually to about $30,000. Ò Milfoil in Loon Lake has now been reduced to manageable levels,” Monroe said. “I’m very pleased our board has recognized the seriousness of the threat of aquatic invasives, and was willing to take aggressive action to protect our water bodies.Ó

WARRENSBURG Ñ Memorial Day ceremonies for 2013 in Warrensburg, scheduled for Monday May 27, are to include a tribute to U.S. Navy personnel, officials of the Warrensburg American Legion Post 446 said this week.

The annual Memorial Day Parade is set for 9 a.m. that day, and decorated veteran Tom Lloyd of Thurman is this year’s Grand Marshal.

The Navy tribute is to be held at 7:30 a.m. at Veterans Park on River St. honoring members of the Navy, U. S. merchant marine and Coast Guard who gave their lives for the nation and whose remains are buried at sea.

Following the parade, a ceremony will be held at the Legion Post 446 on River St. to dedicate the post’s new handicap ramp. The public is invited to attend.

Geraghty, Ackley brothers honored for community service

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — A man who’s dedicated decades to his hometown community and a business whose proprietors have for many years embraced charitable efforts have both been honored by a leading local civic organization.

Kevin Geraghty, President of the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co., has been named Citizen of the Year and Direct Deposit Redemption Center has been named Business of 2013 by the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce.

The awards are to be presented at a Chamber banquet set for Thursday May 23 at Lizzie Keays Restaurant on River St. in Warrensburg.

Geraghty also serves as town of Warrensburg’s supervisor, but this role is not in the limelight for this award.

Chamber officials have said that Geraghty was granted the honor because of his many years as a decision-maker in the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co. which conducts many charitable activities — as well as Geraghty’s scorekeeping at local and regional basketball games for about 40 years.

Through recent decades, the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co. has provided vital funding for the Warrensburg High School Band and other local school groups, sponsored local sports teams, and bankrolled various community groups’ projects as well as paying for upgrades to Richards Library.

The fire company also holds various cherished community events, including the community Thanksgiving dinner and the annual Smoke Eaters’ Jamboree, the premier annual carnival in northern Warren County.

Geraghty joined fire company in 1970 and was named president in 1980, and he’s been serving in that post ever since, except for a two-year hiatus. He’s also served as secretarytreasurer of the Warrensburg Fire District since 1973.

The fire company has also held holiday-related events which have captured the imagination of the public Ñ and Geraghty has been a longtime advocate and organizer of them. The Warrensburg Halloween parade and visits to the local firehouse by Santa both have been beloved traditions in town since the early 1980s.

This week, Geraghty deferred credit to others.

“I’m happy people have recognized the work I’ve done, but it’s not really about just me, its a matter of all the fire company members and their commitment to the community,Ó he said.

“The local firefighters enjoy people having a good time at the Jamboree, and they are happy to help the local senior citizens out at a time many of them are struggling financially. If I played a small role in it, I feel good.Ó Another community-service role for Geraghty has been his nine years on the board of Hudson Headwaters Health Network, during a formative era in the organization which has

“It’s great to see Home Depot step up and do something like this,” he said. “The Chester Veterans’ Memorial is the centerpiece of town, and these enhancements will make it stand out even more.Ó Home Depot employees, with the help of the town of Chester workers, will be installing pavers in the memorial plaza’s two side walkways, which to date have been merely gravel paths.

Shrubs are to be planted on the front edge of the plaza Ñ on the side nearest Main St Ñ behind four new granite benches.

Two of these benches have been purchased by Glens Falls National Bank Ñ one by the corporation, and the other by the bank employees. Another of the benches has been purchased by Home Depot, and the other by Hick’s Monuments, Slattery said.

Home Depot’s donation of money and talent includes landscaping efforts.

New shrubs and plants are to be planted between the Municipal Center building and the Veterans’ Memorial monuments.

The memorial is a series of eight stones in a semicircular arrangement in front of the Municipal Center. The six-feet-tall memorials honor the men and women from the town of Chester who served their nation from the Revolutionary War to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The granite monuments, engraved with about 1,000 names, are flanked with six flags representing the Army Navy, Air Force, Marines Coast Guard and a POW/MIA flag.

As of Tuesday, the May 16 workday was expected to be a substantial effort. Price Chopper and Jacobs & Toney Meat Store of Warrensburg have donated food for the work crew, augmenting the food prepared by Home Depot employees’ family members, Slattery said.

Glens Falls Home Depot Assistant manager Alison Hubbard said the store’s employees were happy to help out, and were proud of the corporate donation. Ò This is fantastic Ñ a great partnership between our store and the northern Warren County communities,Ó she said.

Store Manager Carmen Carbone added his thoughts. Ò Home Depot has a great relationship with the military, and this project demonstrates a great patriotic spirit,Ó he said.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of the Army and represent the United States and what it stands for,Ó he said. Hill applied for the session the very day that applications were first being accepted.

North Warren guidance Counselor Mike Terrio praised Hill’s ambition, focus and work ethic.

Daniel has been the North Warren Class of 2014’s top male student for years, garnering dozens of academic awards, Terrio said this week. Also, Hill was elected as President of North Warren’s Student Council.

“It’s inherent in his character to work hard toward his goals,Ó Terrio said.Ó Few people are willing to sacrifice short-term gains for long-term benefits like Daniel has through the years.Ó Daniel is co-captain of the North Warren soccer and boys’ basketball teams, and he’s a key member of the Cougar baseball team Ñ alongside participating in school drama productions.

His community service is exemplified by his participation in the North Warren Natural Helpers team which counsels students going through challenging circumstances, Terrio continued.

“Dan’s regard for people around him is outstanding,Ó he said.

Hill has also gained some experience in public policy, having assisted in the campaigns of U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson and recent Congressional candidate Matt Doheny.

Daniel is a member of the National Honor Society and has received class leadership and character awards. He serves as Class Treasurer and president of the Foreign Language Club. Recently, he was selected by the local American Legion to attend Boys’ State.

Besides his volunteer community work, the Chamber selected Geraghty for his 44 years of basketball scorekeeping primarily for Warrensburg High School basketball games, and for nearly 25 years for the annual Section II basketball tournament. He’s also kept score for the New York State high school basketball championship playoffs since 1998.

Direct Deposit Redemption Center was chosen for the local Chamber’s award due to its dedication to charitable efforts as well as its owners’ notable landscaping efforts, chamber officials said this week.

About a year ago, brothers Lou and Dean Ackley took over a long-vacant Main St. storefront and relocated their enterprise Direct Deposit Redemption Center at the site.

A deteriorating building got a facelift and its parking lot some fresh pavement. But most of

all, the premises was beautified with extensive floral displays, featuring bright blooms and rich textures.

Direct Deposit, located near the entrance of the Warrensburg hamlet, immediately perked up the downtown scene. Town residents and public officials appreciated the dramatic upgrade. Also, the business gained the reputation as one of the most attractive redemption centers in the state.

This Thursday, Lou and Dean Ackley will be officially recognized for their redevelopment and beautification efforts at the Chamber’s awards banquet.

Such floral displays aren’t new to Dean Ackley, as he formerly was groundskeeper for Warren County for a half-dozen years, tending floral gardens and landscaping for both the county Municipal Center and the county Fish Hatchery up through 2005.
