battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength. Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.
s the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.
EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which
BATTERY Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting
WIPERS Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking. Cold weather requires drivers to amp up their vehicle maintenance routines. Consult with a mechanic or automotive retailer for more ideas and products that can help your vehicles operate safely and efficiently this winter. ■
TIRE PRESSURE According to the automotive retailer Pep Boys, vehicle tires lose a pound of air pressure for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Many modern cars will alert to changes in air pressure, and drivers should be diligent in maintaining the proper tire pressure. Fuel economy as well as handling ability can decline when tires are not inflated properly. Tires can be refilled at many gas stations

products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

The benefits of waxing vehicles After a thorough washing and interior detailing, many vehicle owners put the finishing touch on their cars and trucks by applying a coat of wax. Is this a practice of automotive vanity, or does waxing actually pay legitimate dividends?
A coat of wax provides a pristine shine and can help protect paint from the elements. Waxing may not be as essential as in years past, when vehicle paints were run-of-the-mill lacquers that didn’t offer much in the way of protection. But waxing can still provide a variety of benefits that go beyond making a vehicle look good when cruising down the highway. • Protects paint’s clear coating: According to the research team at consumer resource site Angie’s List, failing to occasionally apply wax or another protectant to the vehicle’s exterior can cause a breakdown of the clear coat that protects the paint. If the clear coating deteriorates, the paint can be exposed to road salt and may be vulnerable to damage from oxidation.

protectant against these issues, and may make it easier to clean off residue so it doesn’t stick to and damage the vehicle’s paint.
• Reduces leasing expenses: Lessees may want to know that applying wax can keep a vehicle in better condition, which can pay dividends when it is time to turn in a vehicle. The dealership will perform a thorough inspection and could charge for discoloration, scratches or other paint issues. Waxing regularly may help reduce those expenses. • May help prevent careless driving: A person who diligently takes care of his or her vehicle may translate that care into caution behind the wheel. If one is excited to keep a clean and well-maintained car, it makes sense that the same person will want to protect the vehicle in other ways, such as through safe driving habits. • Provides exercise and fresh air: A day spent washing and waxing a vehicle can be enjoyable to those who can use some time outdoors.
• Covers up blemishes: Properly applied wax can cover small scratches or light blemishes in the paint job. This may delay having to get a new paint job.
• Improves resale value: A wellmaintained car or truck is more attractive to potential buyers. That can translate into a higher resale value, whether the vehicle is sold privately or as a trade-in.
• Shields against bugs and bird debris: A freshly washed car can seem like a magnet for bird droppings and bug splatter. A coat of wax is another
Waxing a vehicle is beneficial in various ways. New formulations are easier than ever to apply and can provide that shiny, well-maintained look drivers covet. ■

3 ways to improve headlights for safer nighttime driving
Fall & Winter Car Care - The Sun | October 21, 2017 • 3
ForAll your CanvasNeeds!
®ntJfffilnlttrth Many motorists find it more difficult to drive at night than during the daytime. Drivers may fear nighttime driving because they feel their comfort levels behind the wheel are compromised when the sun goes down. Statistics show those fears are not unfounded, as a 2016 analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System found that 43 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States in 2014 occurred between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. But drivers should not simply blame their nerves for the discomfort they feel when driving at night. A recent study from the AAA automotive club found that the halogen headlights in more than 80 percent of the vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. To maintain their vehicles, many drivers take their cars and trucks in for routine oil changes and tire rotations. But headlight maintenance can go a long a way toward making drivers feel safer at night, when visual acuity of the human eye is reduced by up to 70 percent. The following are three ways drivers can improve the performance of their headlights. 1. Upgrade headlight bulbs. A recent report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was critical of headlight design, painting a bleak picture for headlight performance in 30 of the 31 vehicles tested for the report. Many vehicles on the road today are equipped with standard halogen headlights that begin to break down in two to three years, potentially reducing light output by as much as 30 percent. Philips X-tremeVision Bulbs employ advanced technology that can deliver up to 100 percent more light on the
road than standard halogen bulbs. Compatible with various makes and models, each bulb produces a longer beam pattern than standard halogen headlights, vastly improving nighttime visibility on even the darkest roadways. 2. Turn headlights on earlier. Another way to improve headlight performance is to start utilizing them earlier. Once manufacturer-supplied bulbs have been replaced, drivers can make a conscious effort to turn their lights on before the sky goes completely dark. Many drivers feel their vision is most compromised during twilight hours, when a setting sun and shifting shadows combine to greatly compromise driver visibility. By turning headlights on during twilight hours, drivers can counter the effects of Mother Nature during those hours when they feel most vulnerable. 3. Maintain clean headlights. Drivers wouldn’t spend hours on the road driving with dirty windshields, but many are unknowingly driving with clouded headlamps that could be compromising their nighttime visibility and reducing light output by as much as 40 percent. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit is designed to restore headlamp lens clarity to “like new” condition. Utilizing a protective UV coating that produces longer lens clarity and prevents clouding for up to two years, the kit can effectively improve lenses that turn hazy and yellow after years of exposure to sunlight, ozone, pollution and other environmental factors.

Many drivers are naturally more nervous at night than during the daytime. But upgrading headlights and taking steps to maintain headlight performance can calm those nerves and make for safer nighttime driving. More information is available at www.philips.com/ automotive. ■

Improve your winter fuel economy Many motorists notice that their vehicles seem to get less miles per gallon in cold weather than in warm weather. That’s not a trick of the brain, as studies have shown that cars do, in fact, have poorer fuel in economy in cold weather.

According to the United States Department of Energy, fuel economy tests have indicated that, when driving in short-trip city driving, a conventional gasoline car’s gas mileage is about 12 percent lower at 20 F than it would be at 77 F. The disparity is even greater in hybrid vehicles, which can see their fuel economy decline by roughly 34 percent when driven at 20 F. Before drivers can understand how to improve their winter fuel economy, it’s beneficial to learn why cold weather has such an adverse effect on a car’s fuel economy.
'
t
. I
A host of factors combine to reduce fuel economy in the winter. When temperatures dip, engine oil and other drive-line fluids also get colder, and this increases engine and transmission friction. That forces the vehicle to work harder and use more fuel. An engine also takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature when the weather outside is cold. This won’t have too great an impact on fuel efficiency when taking long trips, but the shorter the trip the less economical the vehicle’s use of fuel will be, as a shorter trip means the vehicle is spending a larger percentage of the overall drive at a less fuel efficient temperature. Another reason fuel economy suffers in the winter is the necessities and certain creature comforts drivers need when driving in the cold weather. Windshield defrosters and vehicle heating systems use a substantial amount of power, and that usage forces the vehicle to expend more energy and use more fuel. And while many drivers consider heated seats one of the greatest automotive inventions known to man, those seats also use up a lot of power that

But impact its fuel economy in the winter. many vehicle manufacturers now For example, colder temperatures recommend that drivers idle their decrease tire pressure, and that vehicles for no more than 30 seconds, increases roll resistance, which means noting that idling the car unnecessarily the car must work harder and use more wastes fuel and that driving the vehicle fuel to get down the street than it would is the fastest way to warm up its engine. If you must warm up the if it were riding on fully inflated tires in the summertime. Cold Fuel economy vehicle, stick to the now widely accepted guideline air also is more dense than will almost that recommends idling for warm air, and that increases no more than half a minute. certainly aerodynamic drag on the vehicle, which then needs to use more fuel to counter the increased drag. So what can be done to improve fuel economy in the winter? Fortunately, drivers can take several steps to do just that.
decrease when the mercury drops. But drivers can employ a number of strategies to make their vehicles more fuel efficient in cold weather.
Park the vehicle in a garage. Leaving your car in the driveway in the winter means you might have to dig the vehicle out come winter snowstorms. But that’s not the only inconvenience of parking your vehicle outside in the winter, as doing so can adversely affect its fuel economy. When possible, park the car in the garage, as this increases the initial temperature of the engine, engine oil, drive-line fluids, and the vehicle’s cabin. This can shorten the time it takes for the engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature while decreasing the engine and transmission friction that negatively impacts fuel efficiency. Disregard conventional wisdom. Conventional wisdom has long suggested that idling a vehicle for
Another nugget of conventional wisdom motorists may want to ignore concerns the motor oil they use in the winter. Many vehicle manufacturers now recommend a specific type of oil to use when driving in cold weather, so follow that advice instead of adhering to past practices that may not have been as fuel efficient.
Monitor tire pressure. As noted, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, so drivers should monitor their tire pressure regularly throughout winter to keep their vehicle safe and to ensure they are not wasting fuel. Remove the roof rack. Summer adventurists who love tying their mountain bike or kayak to their vehicles’ roof rack before heading off to explore parts unknown should remove those roof racks when the temperatures dip. Roof racks increase wind resistance and decrease fuel economy, so remove them during the offseasons. ■

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIRE for your vehicle and season SUMMER TIRES
Motorists spend hours behind the wheel and spend lots of money on maintenance to ensure their vehicles are in top working order. But tires are one area of maintenance that often goes unchecked, even by the most diligent automobile owners.
Summer tires are designed to offer traction and maneuverability in warm weather. Orbital grooves and complex treads maximize traction in hot, humid weather. If you live in an area where the temperature is consistently steamy, summer tires may be a good investment.
Tires undergo a lot of wear and tear, which only highlights the importance of proper tire maintenance. But many drivers do not give tires a passing thought until there is a problem, such as a flat or excessive wear. Also, some drivers think that all tires are the same, failing to realize that the kind of tires vehicles need depends on various factors. In addition to the size and type of vehicle, drivers should consider the type of driving they do and the driving conditions they routinely encounter before choosing tires for their vehicles. Many vehicles come off the lot with all-season passenger tires because these tires are among the most versatile. However, if you live in a particular climate or do a lot of driving that requires specific traction or maneuverability, all-season tires may not be the best bet. The following are descriptions of common tire types and the conditions in which they might make the best fit.
WINTER TIRES A safety precaution for many people who live where conditions often include snow, ice and cold weather, winter tires can be lifesavers. These tires are designed using several different types of rubber, and feature tread designs that maximize traction during inclement conditions. Winter tires also come in various subcategories. Studdable winter tires provide the extra security of added studs to enhance traction on ice. Performance winter tires offer better dry road handling, but traction on snow and ice may be compromised. PERFORMANCE TIRES Performance tires offer a sports car feel. These are meant for drivers who want to feel the road and increase lowspeed traction. The higher the level of performance, the increased level of handling and stability at high speeds.
ALL-SEASON All-season tires provide all-season versatility, good wear and ride comfort. They can be dependable tires and offer light snow traction as well.
TRUCK TIRES Trucks, pickups and SUVs also have a variety of tire types. There are off-road varieties, which will offer an aggressive tread design for off-road traction and other obstacles. Light truck tires help provide durability and traction. Specially designed SUV tires may be large, but can still offer comfortfocused applications designed for on-road driving.
All-season tires provide adequate protection in many conditions, but do not offer specific benefits in any one area. They’re likely to be satisfactory for a vast array of drivers. All-season tires are typically offered in touring and passenger types. Touring will provide lower road noise and better handing, while passenger varieties offer a smooth ride and longevity.

Touching up your vehicle’s exterior
Few vehicles make it through road trip season without a scratch or two, and now drivers can quickly and affordably address those chips and nicks on their own in a matter of minutes.
Medium-sized chips, nicks and scratches are best addressed with touchup bottles.
Vehicle touchups were once a realm reserved specifically for mechanics or the most ardent auto enthusiasts. But nowadays even weekend warriors can address the minor dings, chips and scratches on their vehicles, saving them both time and money. • Crack the color code. One of the fears novices commonly have when
touching up their vehicles is that they won’t find the exact match with regard to their vehicle’s exterior color. The key to the perfect color match is contained in the vehicle’s color code, which can be found somewhere on the vehicle, most often on the inside of the driver’s side door. Consult your owner’s manual or call the vehicle
manufacturer if you cannot find the color code on your vehicle. Once you find the code, you can then order your color. Employing the most extensive library of OEM colors in the industry, AutomotiveTouchupTM makes it as simple as ever for drivers to create and order the exact colors to touch up their vehicles’ exteriors. Paints are created per order during a simple, three-step online ordering process using a vehicle’s specific color code, make, model and year, and orders are shipped directly to consumers, saving them from making a trip to the often intimidating automotive supply store. The result is drivers rest easy with the knowledge that they aren’t ordering and subsequently applying the incorrect color to their car or truck. • Use the right application tool. Dings, chips and cracks come in many shapes and sizes, and the appropriate touchup tool will depend on the type and size of the blemish. Small chips and nicks and thin scratches are best addressed with pens, while you might need a small bottle of clearcoat to address slightly larger areas. Use an aerosol spray can to address areas that have experienced extensive damage. When applying the paint, use several light coats rather than one heavy coat. Drivers concerned about their application abilities can visit the AutomotiveTouchup website
KK Repairs

to access a library of educational videos that illustrate how to use the various application tools. Visitors to the website also can speak directly with a team of advisors who can walk them through their projects. • Recognize that practice makes perfect. Even if you are confident you purchased the right paint, it’s still best to practice using your touchup paint prior to applying the paint to your vehicle. Use a glossy sheet of paper or metal can as a practice surface, and then hold that practice surface up next to your vehicle to confirm your choice and calm any lingering nerves you may have about the paint match. • Paint in the right conditions. Before applying any paint, thoroughly clean the affected areas. A simple formula of dish soap and water should do the trick, but be sure to allow the area to dry completely before continuing. When using aerosol cans, the ideal temperature to spray is between 70° and 80°F and humidity should be 50 percent or less. Never spray primer, paint or clearcoat in direct sunlight. • Allow the paint time to dry. Drying times vary depending on the temperature. Paints may take longer to dry when temperatures are below 70°F than they will when the weather is warmer. Once the application process is complete, do not wax the vehicle for 30 days. ■
