Warren County nets $2 million to preserve water quality By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARREN COUNTY | With the intent of protecting the water quality of Lake George, five communities surrounding the lake have been awarded more than $2 million in state grants. The funding comes through the recent Regional Economic Development Council Awards, an annual program that sees hundreds of millions of dollars in grants, incentives and subsidies doled out for a variety of projects across the state. “This is a lot of good news for the North Country,” said Walt Lender of the Lake George Association, which has contributed toward many of the water quality improvement projects the new state grants are set to bankroll. “This represents a great step forward in protecting Lake George’s water quality,” he said. The grant awards, which total $3.1 million for Warren County, were announced Dec. 18. The Town of Bolton was awarded $1 million for improvements to the town’s wastewater treatment plant. The money will help reduce pollutants in the effluent discharged into the Lake George watershed. » Water Cont. on pg. 2

THREE CANDIDATES VIE TO LEAD WARREN COUNTY Conover, Beaty and Braymer seek county chair post

By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

QUEENSBURY | With the new year’s arrival, Warren County govern-

Chester residents’ community wish-list revealed STA FF W RITER

CHESTERTOWN | Citizens of the town of Chester would like to see their downtown thriving with a variety of businesses that offer goodpaying full-time jobs, according to a recent survey. The results of this economic development survey, conducted by the North Warren Chamber of Commerce as a facet of the town’s economic development initiative, are to be detailed at Chester’s next town board meeting, set for 7 p.m. Jan. 9. A preview of the results were revealed at the town’s December meeting. “The survey responses show a lot of good ideas — they are doable — and people are moving forward with them,” chamber Mar-

keting Director Debra Eves said. Eves asked the town board members to guess what businesses respondents would most like to see come to town. Local resident Brett Hitchcock guessed “bakery,” and Eves confi rmed his choice, prompting laughter and agreement from those attending the town meeting. Other businesses survey respondents craved were a laundromat, a car wash, artisan and craft galleries and an artists’ cooperative. Services they would like to have available locally include additional child care and senior care facilities and more off-season community activities. Additional municipal amenities including high-speed internet access, a dog park, a playground, new sidewalks and more historical des-

tinations were also mentioned by respondents as welcome potential upgrades to the town. What did those surveyed say they did not want to see in town? No “big box” stores, no car dealerships, no fast-food chains, and no casino, Eves reported. The town’s most prominent assets, respondents said, were its natural environment, its small-town ambiance, its residents and their strong sense of community, as well as the town’s Adirondack heritage, Eves said. She noted that the latter asset could be promoted through employing initiatives of the First Wilderness Corridor program. Chamber president Greg Beckler said that the survey respondents wanted an array of businesses providing additional job opportu-

nities, but entrepreneurs already established in town had difficulty filling open positions. More restaurants and taverns were also mentioned as a welcome addition — which Eves said was surprising, as the town already has plenty of such venues. But these and many other businesses require a municipal sewer system, Eves said, questioning whether businesses could be recruited before such infrastructure was constructed downtown. Eves added that the town was achieving progress “in inches rather than in yards” towards the goals expressed. “The survey results validate a lot what we already know and the frustrations we already feel,” she said. “We’re trying to keep people motivated, so we can take this to the next level.” ■

Sewer District, to replace the aging pumps, and to “slipline” sewer pipes near the rehabilitated station to prevent groundwater infiltration or leakage. “This is absolutely a great boost to the residents of the Caldwell Sewer District,” Town of Lake George Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said, adding that with the pump station consolidation, as well as electric power and maintenance costs would likely decrease. “This grant cuts these taxpayers’ financial obligation for infrastructure upgrades by 60 percent.”

The Village of Lake George is set to receive $100,000 to advance an ongoing study on groundwater infiltration into the sanitary sewer collection system. The Town of Ticonderoga was granted $30,000 for improvements to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at the town’s sewer treatment plant. ■ — This story has been abridged for print. Fort Edward woman arrested after making off with senior citizen’s purse

QUEENSBURY | A Fort Edward woman was arrested by Warren County Sheriff’s Officers for allegedly stealing an elderly woman’s purse. Krystyna K. Roberts, 30, was arrested Dec. 19 after police responded to a disturbance at the Citizen’s Bank on Upper Glen Street in Queensbury. Police said Roberts had been involved in an argument inside the bank regarding a checking account with an elderly victim, and during the argument, Roberts forcibly stole the victim’s purse and fled the scene. The victim was not injured. Roberts and the victim are acquainted. Roberts went to the Fort Edward Police Department a short time later on an unrelated matter, at which time Warren County Sheriff’s Officers were able to take her into custody without incident. The victim’s purse and contents were recovered at that time. Roberts was charged with one count of robbery in the third degree, a class D felony, arraigned

at the Town of Queensbury Court and released on her own recognizance. An order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim. Roberts is due back in Queensbury Court on Dec. 31. ■

Woman arrested for false report of sexual assault

QUEENSBURY | Warren County Sheriff’s Officers arrested a Johnsburg woman Dec. 27 for allegedly falsely reporting a sexual assault. Nikole P. Tucker, 20, was arrested following a police investigation into a report of an alleged sexual assault that was said to have occurred at the dormitory of SUNY Adirondack on Dec. 16. Police said they determined the report was false in nature and subsequently charged Tucker with falsely reporting an incident and making a punishable false written statement. Both charges are class A misdemeanors. Tucker admitted to investigating officers that she fabricated the allegations. Tucker is due to appear on Jan. 28 in the Town of Queensbury Court to answer the charges against her. ■

Man racks up two felony DWI charges

LAKE GEORGE | A Lake George man was arrested by Warren County Sheriffs for an alleged charge of felony driving while intoxicated (DWI). Jon A. Saroney, 43, was arrested on Dec. 28 for two felonies after police observed him driving erratically on Canada Street in Lake George village. Police said they observed Saroney’s Kia swerving between the northbound lanes, nearly striking another vehicle. Saroney was stopped and subsequently submitted to a chemical test and was found to have a blood alcohol content of .23 percent. Saroney was charged with felony aggravated DWI — blood alcohol content over .18 and a second felony charge of DWI due to two prior DWI convictions back in 2009. Saroney was also charged with moving from lane unsafely and possession of open containers inside the vehicle. Saroney was held in Warren County Police lock-up pending arraignment in Lake George Town Court. ■

» Candidates Cont. from pg. 1 With the three candidates positioned to garner solid support, a stalemate may occur unless one of them receives a majority of the board’s 1,000 weighted votes. And if one of the candidates can’t line up this majority by Feb. 1, state law mandates that County Clerk Pam Vogel will choose the chairman. Such a situation hasn’t happened here in 35 years. If this scenario unfolds, state law calls for the incumbent board chairman, Ron Conover, to temporarily continue in his position between June 4 and Jan 31. Two-term Queensbury-at-large supervisor Doug Beaty, a Republican, and Glens Falls Ward 3 Supervisor Claudia Braymer, a Democrat, are both challenging Conover, who is seeking his third one-year term as board chairman. Conover has served since 2009 as Bolton town supervisor. In a closed-door Republican caucus held Dec. 13, Conover received his party’s endorsement over Beaty in a super-majority vote — winning the support of at least two thirds of the caucus members. Eleven supervisors on the county board are Republicans, eight are Democrats, and one is independent — Craig Leggett of Chester. Considering that board will be casting weighted votes based on population, all three candidates likely will be garnering a substantial share of the votes, creating the stalemate.

BEATY SEEKS MORE COLLABORATION IN DECISIONS

During Beaty’s four years on the county board, he’s often criticized decisions of his peers and questioned many of the board’s procedures. Beaty said if elected, he will seek to boost transparency in government. “Information is often withheld from other supervisors until the last minute, and that’s the worst approach to decision-making,” he said. “Transparency is the basic foundation of good government.” Conover countered that all substantial decisions by the county board of supervisors have been fully deliberated both in the supervisors’ committee meetings as well as by the full board. “No supervisor has told me they’ve had difficulty getting information,” Conover said. “But we should always endeavor to improve our communication.” Beaty has challenged a number of decisions that were made by county supervisors following lengthy deliberations, including the sale of the Westmount Nursing home to a private enterprise. In a recent interview, he criticized the county court complex addition and renovation project now nearing completion. “By law, we only needed 5,100 square feet for a new family court judge, but we built a 23,000 square feet addition, and instead of it being a $3 million project, it’s costing $20 million,” he said. However, long before the supervisors decided to approve the $16.5 million project, the county’s judges told them how office and court space was severely cramped for court and legal staff, and how the lack of space threatened their security and hampered the staffers’ work.

Also, the state cited the county for operating its court system with inadequate space and mandated that they comply with the law in providing barrier-free access for citizens with disabilities.

AIRPORT’S RUNWAY EXTENSION ALSO A CONCERN

Both Beaty and Braymer have been critical of the county’s effort to extend a runway at the county-owned Floyd Bennett Airport at a cost of $8 million or so, with 95 percent of the cost to be born by the state and federal sources. Critics of the extension, planned for more than 14 years, said the project was a waste of taxpayer money and threatened very rare environmental features called marl fens. With Braymer playing a lead role, opponents of the project have recently convinced lawmakers to consider a scaled-back project that is estimated to cost about $5 million. Braymer, who is serving her third year on the board, said she was pleased that the new, less intrusive project would save a lot of woods that would otherwise have been bulldozed. Beaty reiterated his opinion that a runway extension was entirely unnecessary. “There’s no proven need for an $11 million, $8 million or $5 million runway extension — it’s just bad government,” he said. “If elected chairman, I’m going to put the right people in the right places so we make good common-sense decisions and actually save a buck or two. And if other supervisors don’t want to support that, they’re part of the old sausage-making machine.” Airport personnel and county supervisors promoting the extension, however, say the project is a way of increasing the airport’s use and safety, as well as boosting the local economy — all at minimal cost locally.

SALES TAX REVENUE REALLOCATION SOUGHT

Beaty has not only been outspoken in cutting government expenses, but lately he’s supported reallocation of sales tax revenue, which he said would benefit 80 percent of the county’s taxpayers. Braymer and other Glens Falls Democratic supervisors support re-examining how sales tax revenue is distributed. Now, towns with high-priced lakefront property receive far more of the county’s sales tax revenue than municipalities without high property valuations — because allocation is based on each town’s total assessed value — its percentage of the county’s total valuation. Beaty advocates changing the distribution of sales tax revenue so it is based 50 percent on a town’s population and 50 percent on a town’s total assessed value, rather than 100 percent of the latter.

GRANTOR

GRANTEE

With such a change, Bolton would lose $1.56 million in revenue, while Queensbury would gain $1.49 million, Glens Falls would gain $1.29 million, and Warrensburg would reap an extra $448,533. “The 20 percent who have been riding high are going to have to go backwards a bit,” Beaty said. “Reallocation of this revenue is a no-brainer.” Braymer hasn’t cited specific formulas — instead she said she was seeking fair allocation to all taxpayers. “Sales tax revenue distribution deserves honest and open discussion,” she said. Conover has contended that the residents of towns with lakefront property have been paying the bulk of the county’s property taxes, so the existing formula for sales tax revenue rebates is proportionate and fair. “Our equalization and apportionment of sales tax needs to be better understood by all,” he said, adding that if elected he will set a public meeting on the issue. Conover added, however, that he advocates helping out the less land-wealthy municipalities by allocating more money to them by boosting county compensation for winter road maintenance, as well as financial support for road and bridge repair or reconstruction. “The county needs an infrastructure program to address needs throughout the entire county,” he said. “There are many ways to help various towns without turning our existing equalization and apportionment program on its head.”

CONOVER CITES BOARD’S RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In his bid for county chair, Conover said he is seeking to accomplish the work that has been started under his administration. Also, he noted the board’s recent accomplishments, including completing the county’s NSTEM facility construction project, developing the college’s culinary school and demonstration restaurant in downtown Glens Falls, renewing a fixed base operator contract with Richard Schemerhorn that has provided multiple benefits to taxpayers, and filling five top positions in county government, including county administrator. ■

WARREN COUNTY TRANSACTIONS DATE

Ron Conover

Braymer said another concern she’d like to address if elected chairman is fairness in the way county occupancy tax is distributed. “We can do a better job of evaluating all applications for bed tax grants and making decisions based on objective criteria, which results in awarding money to the best, most successful events,” she said. A practicing attorney, Braymer has advocated that the county’s new hires in vital positions be appropriately credentialed — and she’s also been known for proposing a ban on throwaway retail plastic bags and other environmentally conscious initiatives. Beaty said one of his prime objectives is to expand access to broadband in rural areas of the county, calling such connectivity “a basic necessity.” Regarding the fate of the county-owned railroad, both Braymer and Conover said that county residents’ interests should be fully protected — whether the rail corridor hosts passenger trains again, or is converted to a hiking/bicycling trail. Braymer said the corridor is a valuable asset and likely should remain publicly owned. All three candidates say that moving towards a county-based emergency medical services system makes sense, so all residents have adequate Advanced Life Support services.

Red Storm make early season statement in Nordic

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

NORTH CREEK | Jacob Alberga knows how challenging the goal is which the Saranac Lake Nordic ski team has set for themselves. “We want to be in contention for a state championship,” Alberga, a member of the state championship Red Storm cross country team, said after the Queensbury Relays at Gore Mountain Dec. 29. The Red Storm relay team of Alberga, Nick Kelting and Adrian Hayden scored the win at the relays in a time of 22:16.6, followed by defending state champion Lake Placid, who combined James Flanigan, Kai Frantz and Max Flanigan to finish in a time of 23:11.5. “I tell everyone to focus, stay in shape and keep the goals in site,” Alberga said. “There are not many schools who can even think about winning two state titles in one year and we want to accomplish that.” “We are fighting for the state title this year,” said Kelting. “Jacob being on both teams, to get him two state titles in a year would be amazing,” said Hayden. “To also do that for the school, it would be legendary.” Alberga said the team has been enjoying the early season. “This was a lot of fun,” Alberga said of the start of the season. “It’s fun coming back for your senior year and knowing everybody you compete with. We have a really good community of parents and teammates cheering for each other.” “It’s very early and there are still teams we have not seen who are very good,” said Red Storm coach Keith Kogut. “We had a good first competition against Lake Placid and did well here, so it’s a good start, but there is a long way to go.”

The Saranac Lake trio of Colter Cheney-Seymour, Taylor Samburgh and Brennan Nobles placed fourth, while Reuben Bernstein, Adam Hesseltine and Griffin Smith placed 11th for the Red Storm. Johnsburg had a pair of teams compete on the home course, as the trio of David Anderson, Gabe Powers and Gabe Smith placed 18th and the grouping of Wolfgang Neal, Wyatt Moore and Braydon Jourdan placed 31st. In the girls race, the Lake Placid trio of Annie Rose-McCandish, Lynn Palen and Lura Johnson placed third in a time of 30:01.9, while Sophia Kelting, Ruby Smith and Jordanna Samburgh of Saranac Lake were fifth and the Johnsburg trio of Sheridan Millington, Manon Stevens and Ava Anderson were sixth. Lake Placid’s second team of Lilly Flanigan, Alexa Harper and Harley Cohen placed 12th.

Lake Placid coach Bill Frazer said he was very happy with the performance of both teams early on. “Both the boys and girls teams are looking great and it’s great to be able to go down to Section II and do so well against so many schools,” Frazer said. “Our Section VII boys are some of the fastest in the state. I was also really impressed with how my girls skied and I feel that they will only improve as the season goes on.” Frazer added the road to a boys state championship, which has run through Lake Placid the last three years, may now head a little more to the west. “It will be difficult to defend with some losses due to graduation and the Saranac Lake boys are looking like the team to beat this year, but they skied well today to place second,” he said. ■

State-ranked Warrensburg girls team remains unbeaten

By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

HUDSON FALLS | With their signature high-energy balanced attack, the Warrensburg girls basketball team extended its unbeaten streak Dec. 22 as they steamrolled Hudson Falls, a school with early twice the enrollment of Warrensburg High. Seeking revenge for a defeat last year, the Burghers beat the Tigers 56-30 in Hudson Falls’ gym. With the win, Warrensburg advances to 10-0 overall for the season. Their string of victories has earned them a ranking of No. 12 of all Class C schools in the state. Their latest two wins advanced them two positions in the rankings, determined by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Senior Megan Hughes, a four-year Varsity player, was on fire during the game, scoring 34 points, a career high. Recalling the competition, she said she kept shooting throughout the game without knowing she’d scored so many points. “Our team worked together well,” she said. “They saw that I was making most of my shots, so they kept giving me the ball.” She said she and her teammates were determined to Discover the world's best walk-in bathtub from

Salem team, defeating them 44 to 43. All players of both teams scored points from all over the court in this defensive battle in which the outcome was determined in the final seconds. Mackenzie Spencer of Salem was a challenge for the Burghers to rein in, as she scored a team-high 16 points and brought down 18 rebounds. Abigail Ranous was high scorer for the Burghers with 16 points, followed by Sara Langworthy with 13, Megan Hughes with 5, plus Hope Boland and senior forward Dianne Curtis with 4 points each. Junior Aubrey Ranous, a defensive standout, contributed 2 points. Next up for the Burghers is a home game at Friday Jan. 4 against Whitehall, followed by an away game against Fort Edward Wednesday Jan. 9 and then a home game against Hartford Friday Jan. 11. All these games start at 5:30 p.m. ■

defeat Hudson Falls, because the Tigers had beaten them last year in Warrensburg’s gym. A key element of their success this year has been the team’s defense, as well as offensive rebounding, Hughes said. “Coach tells us that if we play good defense that our offense will come together,” she said. The Burghers aren’t letting their high state ranking go to their heads, Hughes said, and are working hard and pushing themselves to continually improve. “We have a great team this year. We have worked together for a couple of seasons now, so we are finally getting the feel of what we can to if we all work together” she said. “We’ve had a great start and I think there are more wins to come!” Point guard and playmaker Hope Boland, a junior, scored 9 points in the victory, and junior Abigail Ranous followed with 8 points. Freshman Sara Langworthy contributed 5.

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Optimism heading into 2019 Change is the one

thing you can always depend on in life. I learned long ago that resisting By Dan Alexander change serves no • PUBLISHER • real purpose. It is going to happen whether we embrace it or not. As a result, I believe accepting change and dealing with it before it deals with you has served us well at The Sun. Over the last few years, as the daily newspaper distribution has drastically declined, The Sun’s longtime, direct mail free distribution program has grown significantly. So much so, that in the next few weeks, we will be converting the size of The Sun to a broadsheet format which will expand the length of each page by roughly five inches. The longer page will not only allow the many different sized pre-printed inserts to fit better inside the paper, but it will permit our news and creative staffs greater opportunity to use the new space. In 2019, we also hope to continue our production department expansion, to improve the color reproduction quality while reducing spoilage and seeking new ways to increase productivity and efficiency. While we deal with fun changes, we also face several daunting challenges. Last year’s newsprint tariffs scare, which artificially increased the cost of paper by 40 percent, has yet to be reduced, with paper mills continuing to charge the inflated price for newsprint. The paper increase, coupled with an announced price increase by the United States Postal Service (USPS) for saturation mail, has us working closely to examine our costs. The Postal Service has basically “admitted” that it did not realize how high the 8.5 percent increase would be after juggling all of the computations. USPS also failed to recognize that some types of mailers, like The Sun, have no choice, given the rural geography of the North Country, but to enter the mail at the sectional postal centers. Due to the decline of small businesses in many of our rural communities, advertising support is not what it once was, which has us looking seriously at other distribution models and ways to maintain the local news coverage we’ve provided for over 70 years. Despite the challenges, small businesses like ours have learned to be resilient. We recognize the essential role we play delivering the local news and advertising so critical to the local economy, and we remain confident in our ability to continue to do so with your support and encouragement. Here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2019 for all! ■

Letters

Disagrees with ‘prestige’ accusation

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to the letters of Reginald H. Bedell and David Thomas-Train which appeared in the Dec. 22 edition of The Sun titled, “Letter ‘ brings no prestige’ to newspaper” and “We must move past climate change deniers,” respectively. To the Editor: In order to gain “prestige” and to maintain “intellectual integrity,” should you just print only the “accepted” point of view of the anointed few as Bedell suggests? As to Thomas-Train’s claims of retreating ice sheets and atmospheric concentrations from “300,000 years,” there is evidence to the contrary and certainly no scientific proof that any of his alleged changes were manmade, nor are they fi xable by a carbon tax on Americans or by such a tax on anyone. His claim of “97 percent of scientists” were most likely 97 percent of the paid shills pretending to be “scientists” like Bill Nye. - Terry K. Hurlburt, Ticonderoga ■

Go vegan in the new year

To the Editor: With the glow of Christmas barely behind us, we look forward to the new year and the customary New Year’s resolutions: Reduce social media, reduce weight and this year, reduce animal food consumption. One-third of consumers already report reducing their consumption of animal foods. Hundreds of school, college, hospital and corporate cafeterias have embraced “Meatless Monday.” Even fast-food chains Chipotle, Denny’s, Panera, Subway, Taco Bell and White Castle are rolling out plant-based options.

Gender descriptors unnecessary in sports

To the Editor: I am continually disappointed by this newspaper’s reference to girls sports teams as the “lady” version of their team mascot, while their male counterparts receive no such gender distinction. As a former high school athlete who continues to enjoy competitive sports, I regard the “lady” descriptor as unnecessary and patronizing. It reinforces a larger cultural bias that views women’s athletics as a lesser version of men’s — a bias that limits scholarship and career opportunities for women in professional sports and detracts from the achievements of fiercely competitive, strong and talented female athletes. - Sarah Kingzack, Westport ■

Coaches playing favorites at Schroon Lake

To the Editor: My child in her senior year is always sitting on the bench when playing basketball. It appears that some coaches (educators) at Schroon Lake Central School feel the need to choose only their favorites and not necessarily the good players. The educators that I don’t name know who they are, and so does the community. I have written to the coach, the superintendent and spoke to several board members. It appears they know what is occurring but don’t care to acknowledge there is a problem. One would think that these educators would realize this is a form of abuse. This lowers the child’s self-esteem and may even cause them to hate the sport. Again, being educators, you would think they would be knowledgeable and refrain from such inappropriate practices when dealing with children. After all, this practice of favoritism does not just touch one child but effects others as well. Many other parents at the Schroon Lake School District also support my same thoughts. I hear from many parents, teachers and other children that my daughter is very good and should be playing in her senior year. I would think that many in the district would think that those educators should evaluate their behaviors and correct themselves. In a short summary, let the children enjoy playing sports, gain positive experiences and for coaches to stop thinking they’re in a national league but rather concentrate on teaching and role model. It’s high school. Experiences, learning and playing sports should be “fun” and “enjoyable!” - Mark Lebel, Schroon Lake ■ This free community newspaper exists to serve the informational needs of the community and to stimulate a robust local economy. WarEagles continue to advance winning campaign By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

HADLEY | With their athletes sharpening their skills day by day, the Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles wrestling team defeated yet another opponent, the talented Salem-Cambridge squad Dec. 19. Held in the Hadley-Luzerne gym, the WarEagles displayed athleticism throughout the weight classes as they won 46-27. The meet started out with the muscular WarEagle senior Logan Duers, 12-3 so far this year, pinning Rylie Burr in 14 seconds in the 160-pound weight class. From then on, the victories kept accumulating. Duers’ teammate Justin Hoffman decisioned Hunter Day 2-1 at 170 pounds. Hoffman, a sophomore, is 12-2 so far this season. At 182 pounds, junior Colby Hoolihan defeated Doug Pennington in a 14-7 decision. Then senior Cody York, a three-year Section II place-winner, pinned Lucas Martindale in 34 seconds at 195 pounds. York is expected to be the top wrestler in the upcoming Sectional tournament in two months. Junior Cameron Duers followed, winning an 8-0 decision over Evan Day at 220 pounds — Cameron is 11-3 to date this season. Senior

With an 18-0 record as of Dec. 29, York is aiming for a Section II title this season. Photo by Lauren Wittenberg Will Mitcham, 12-2 at this point, then was credited with a forfeit at 285 pounds. From that point on, the WarEagles wins were scattered. Seventh-grader Gavin McCabe won an 8-5 decision over Jacob Haynes at 106 pounds; and freshman Quinton Fox pinned Jacob Lisoski in 1:12 at 126 pounds, followed by junior Mike Fuss winning a 7-3 decision over Jamie Olvera at 145 pounds

and senior Gary Spotswood pinning Cliff Lewis in 2:54 at 152 pounds. The victory advanced the WarEagles to 8-2 overall as they remained undefeated in the league. Dec. 29, the WarEagles competed in the Queensbury Holiday Tournament and came in second amongst 10 teams. Three WarEagle wrestlers won championships: York at 182 pounds to advance his season record

to 17-0, Cameron Duers at 195 and Will Mitcham at 285. Placing second in the tourney were Logan Duers at 152 pounds and Justin Hoffman at 160. Coach Larry Rounds said this week his wrestlers were working hard. “Now that we’re in the middle third of the season, all our athletes are stepping up another notch: they’re gaining muscle, some are pushing for lower weight classes, and all are in shape, following regular diets — and they’re now much stronger pound-for-pound.” Rounds said that all his athletes have been contributing to the team’s victories. “Early this season, we knew what we had with our veterans, but weren’t about the younger wrestlers, but they’ve showed up every day and worked hard — and now they’re starting to experience some success,” he said. “They were a key factor in defeating Salem, and they’ve been a large part why we’ve been able to start out as well as we have so far this year.” After facing Shenendehowa High on Dec. 29, the WarEagles will be taking on Warrensburg at home on Jan 3, and the action starts at 6 p.m.. Rounds and Burgher coach Mark Trapasso consider this upcoming league game to be a highlight of the year, as the two teams are among the best in the area. ■

Burghers win tournament named after famed local coach By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | The boys basketball team of Warrensburg High staged a mid-season surge Dec. 28 as they won their own Coach Khoury Christmas Invitational tournament 52-27 over Loudonville Christian. The prior day, they defeated Heatly of Troy by a score of 66-23 to advance to the finals. The tournament is named after George Khoury who spent 37 years coaching at Warrensburg High School, and being honored as the high school basketball coach tallying the most wins when he retired in 1984. These two victories follow six straight league losses for Warrensburg, which may indicate a new course for the team from mid-season on.

Multi-sport athlete Evan MacDuff, a senior, was named MVP of the tourney, which featured Johnsburg as a competing team. Joining MacDuff on the All-tournament team was Burgher senior Dan Kelly as well as Anthony Galle of Johnsburg. Against Loudonville Christian, MacDuff scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, followed by senior Brandon Bailey with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Freshman Dan Cunniffe tallied 10 points and 3 assists, Kelly scored 9 points, brought down 5 rebounds and tallied 6 assists. Junior Mike Tyrell scored 6 points and had 3 assists. In Thursday’s semifinal against Heatly, MacDuff scored a tournament-high 31 points. The team distributed the ball unselfishly, resulting in seven of the eight Burgher players scoring points. Aiding MacDuff in the scoring show were Kelly with 10 points, sophomore William Mason and Bailey with 8 each, junior

Max Richards with 4 points, followed by Mike Tyrell with 3 and Dan Cunniffe with 2. MacDuff had 21 rebounds in this game, followed by Tyrell and Bailey with 10 each, Kelly with 4, Mason with 3, plus Richards and senior Peyton Olden with 3 each. In 1983 George Khoury broke the record for high school basketball coaching victories in New York State, earning his spot in state sports history, as well as the state Basketball Hall of Fame. He spent his entire coaching career at Warrensburg High. Khoury retired in the 1984 after tallying 518 basketball wins which propelled his teams to 13 league titles and four Section II championships. As of this year, Khoury still ranks among the top ten winningest coaches in state history. Next up for the Burghers is an away game against Whitehall at 7 p.m. Friday Jan. 4, then a home game against Fort Edward at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 8 ■

Burghers overpower Whitehall-Fort Ann on ‘Alumni Night’ meet About 30 former WCS wrestlers watch the show By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg wrestling team won two meets and lost a non-league matchup by one point as they approached the mid-season mark. Taking on Whitehall-Fort Ann on Dec. 19, the Burghers crushed the Railroaders 65-17 — perhaps the margin was due to the fact that it was the Burghers annual Alumni Night, and nearly 30 of their older brethren were watching the action. These former Warrensburg wrestlers were recognized and applauded at the meet. Warrensburg only lost two of their matches in the matchup with Whitehall-Fort Ann. Pinning their opponents were Dustin Reiter at

Nearly 30 former Warrensburg High School wrestlers gathered for a commemorative photo during the school’s annual Alumni Night held Dec. 19 in conjunction with a meet against Whitehall-Fort Ann. Likely because they were inspired by the presence of the Warrensburg grads, the Burghers won the match by a wide margin — the score was 65-17. Photo by Kin McKenna 126 pounds, Zach Carpenter at 132 pounds, Thomas Combs at 160 pounds, Chris Wilson at 220 pounds, Jacob Clear at 285 pounds, Landian Templeton at 106 pounds and Tanner McKenna at 120 pounds. In the 152-pound weight class, Hunter McKenna won a 13-2 decision; at 182 pounds, Tristan Hitchcock won a 6-5 decision; and at 113 pounds, Dante Corriveau tallied a 26-12 decision in a wild, action-packed match. Credited with forfeits were Caiden Mosher at 138

battle with Queensbury, a far-larger school which for decades has fielded powerhouse wrestling teams. The Spartans’ strength was demonstrated six days later when they won their own tournament over nine other teams. Victorious in seven of the individual matches against Queensbury opponents, Warrensburg won the non-league duals meet at home by a score of 42 to 36. In the last match, Tanner McKenna secured the win at 126 pounds with a pin in one minute, 37 seconds. Also winning via falls for Warrensburg were Jacob Clear who pinned his opponent in a blistering 13 seconds, and Robert Ranous who won at 99 pounds with a pin in 3:47. Zack Davis started off the meet with a 8-2 decision over his opponent at 138 pounds, followed by Zach Shambo with a 10-3 decision, followed by teammate Hunter McKenna who won an 8-7 decision at 152 pounds. Later, Dylan Winchell won a 5-3 decision at 120 pounds. Both Chris Wilson and Landian Templeton were credited with forfeits. The meet boosted Warrensburg’s overall

On Dec. 28, the Burghers competed against Peru, which for 30 years has conducted a renowned wrestling program. After 15 matches, the Burghers and Indians were tied 40-40 — and the scorekeepers credited Peru with a tie-breaking point as they won eight of the matchups and Warrensburg had won seven. Winning their matches for the Burgers by pinning their opponents were Burgher wrestlers Dylan Winchell at 113 pounds, Zach Shambo at 132 pounds, Zach Davis at 138 pounds, Tristan Hitchcock at 182 pounds and Nolan McNeill at 195 pounds. McNeill earned the honors of the fastest pin of the day, a 52-second feat. At 145, Hunter McKenna won a 9-1 decision at 145 pounds. Chris Wilson was credited with a forfeit at 200 pounds. Next up for Warrensburg is a showdown with the rival Hadley-Luyzerne/Lake George WarEagles squad on Thursday Jan 3. This highly anticipated meet begins at 6 p.m. in the Hadley-Luzerne gym. This is followed by the annual Warrensburg Duals mass meet in the Burghers gym on Saturday Jan. 5 ■

Fifty-five years ago – December 1963 SPRUCE TREE LEAVING TOWN

By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

MOTHER NATURE CHARGES IN

The first snow of the season came on Monday night, Dec. 2, 1963 when six inches fell from the sky, transforming the landscape of the village and the surrounding mountains into a pristine white wonderland, but it brought misery to motorists. A party of successful hunters returned to their homes on Sunday, Dec. 1, 1963. They were Fred Martin; Barry Aldrich; Douglas Wilde and son, John Wilde; and Robert Moulton, all of Warrensburg; Charles Wilde, of Bolton; Howard Andrus, of Corinth; and Raymond Needham, of Athol. Kenneth Alger shot a fine deer.

BOYS HEAD OFF FOR CAMP

Columnist Bill Roden and his buddy, John Magee, of Chestertown, headed out to go hunting recently in the Adirondack hunting grounds at the Old Log Drivers Camp No. 2, on the Hudson River, in a drenching downpour. John Little and his son, of Chestertown, had a good warm up fire going at the camp when they got there. John Magee had the traditional big pot of his famous spaghetti sauce on hand to simmer on the wood burning stove for the next 24 hours in readiness for the evening meal the next day.

A 60 foot Norway spruce tree is being prepared for transportation to New York City where it will be erected as the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. This Adirondack tree may now be seen across from the Town of Chester dump on the Landon Hill Road, between Chestertown and Pottersville.

NEW LICENSE PLATE LAW

The 1964 license plates for passenger and commercial vehicles went on sale in the new Warren County Center, on Monday, Dec. 2, 1963, County Clerk Sidney VanDusen announced. Motorists this year, for the first time, will have only one plate on their cars compared to the two which usually are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. It is unlawful now to leave an expired plate on the front of the vehicle.

NORTHWAY STRETCH TO OPEN

Northbound lanes of the new Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87), between Gurney Lane, north of Glens Falls and Luzerne Road (Route 9N), south of Lake George, will be opened to traffic on Dec. 23, 1963 in time for Christmas holiday traffic.

PLANNING BOARD MEMBERS RESIGN

The Warrensburg Planning Board Commission resigned in a body on Tuesday night, Dec. 10, 1963, in a protest against

what it called the failure of the town board to utilize its services in reaching decisions on land use. A letter signed by all five members of the commission specified two major points on which its opinion had not been asked. This was the recent adoption of the junkyard ordinance and the selection of a site for the proposed new town hall. The letter was read aloud to the board by Roy Randall. He said, “We feel we have been treated very badly” and that none of the members would consider withdrawing their resignations. Randall was accompanied by Gilbert J. Potter and Anthony Muratori. Chairman Richard Kline and P. Raymond Keyes were unable to attend the meeting.

PRIEST ATTACKED BY FANATIC

Many Warrensburg residents were shocked on Dec. 3, 1963, to hear of the bludgeoning of Monsignor Rev. Francis X. Fitzgibbon, by a religious fanatic and former mental patient which took place while he was saying mass for the nuns in the Convent of Christ the King Church, Springfield Gardens, Queens. Rev. Fitzgibbon has been a yearly guest of Ashes Hotel for over 35 years and is well known to many here. He is slightly improved but is still in critical condition.

SWEET AND SOUR NOTES

Warrensburg celebrated her sesquicentennial (1813-1963), 150 year anniversary.
