$9.4 million more pledged for Lake George’s new sewer plant By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | Gov. Cuomo’s office announced Jan. 5 that an additional $9.4 million in state grant money is earmarked for the village’s $24 million sewer plant now under construction — and local officials praised the financial commitment, noting it will prevent local taxes and sewer fees from increasing exponentially. “This is tremendous,” Lake George Mayor Blais said Jan. 6. “This grant is extremely helpful in making the plant affordable.” The new grant joins a total of $7.25 million previously pledged to the plant from various sources. With this latest grant, the state’s commitment totals $14.9 million. Blais said that the not only would local residents — many of whom have meager incomes — be protected from soaring taxation, but local businesses, particularly accommodations, would be able to stay competitive with their counterparts in

While Lake George officials lauded Gov. Cuomo’s announcement of $9.4 million more towards the village’s sewer plant for protecting local citizens from burdensome tax increases, environmental leaders hailed the financial pledge for assuring that the additional grant would ensure that the lake would be protected from pollution emanating from the existing plant. other resort areas nationwide. Owners of major Lake George hotels reported months ago that without additional grant funding, they would have to pay $50,000 to $90,000 more annually in local taxes — costs which would prompt stiff increase in room rates.

Blais said the new grant should go a long way to prevent prices in Lake George from becoming out-of-reach of the village’s tourists and vacationers, whom he characterized as primarily middle-class. See SEWER GRANT » pg. 2

Longtime Stony Creek CEO takes reins of Warren Co. government By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | Minutes after he was elected chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors Jan. 3, Stony Creek Supervisor Frank Thomas called for investments in the county’s infrastructure and workforce development programs — as well as taking action to assure that high quality emergency medical services are available on a timely basis across the county. Thomas, a Republican, received the votes of 14 of the 19 supervisors attending the county’s annual organizational meeting, as the board has a wide G.O.P majority. Glens Falls Ward 5 Supervisor Ben Driscoll was supported by all but one of the board’s Democrats. Thomas replaces Ron Conover who served in the post for three years. Thomas said that to attract new businesses and jobs to the area, workforce development should be strengthened, and the county’s

From FATAL FIRE » pg. 1

Warrensburg Fire Co. Assistant Chief Dave Alexander said the fire was initially reported at about 3:30 a.m. Dec. 31 by a Warren County plow truck operator who had driven past the burning house. Alexander said this public works employee had passed by the house an hour beforehand and hadn’t seen anything unusual. Alexander said he and other firefighters were on the scene within minutes of the call, dousing the flames. The search for any potential fire victims began after sunrise — Doug Strodel’s body was found in the area of a first floor bedroom near the front of the house, and Gail Strodel’s remains were found near an exit door at the back of the house, Alexander said. He said he believed the couple were in their mid-70s. On Jan. 3, Warren County Fire Coordinator and Emergency Services Director Brian LaFlure said that the cause of the fire will most likely never be determined. “The level of destruction and the fact there are no witnesses

make it near impossible to determine the cause,” LaFlure said. “We’ve had nothing to work from to determine a cause. There was basically nothing left of the house.” There was a wood stove in the Strodel’s home, but fire investigators don’t believe it was in use, LaFlure added. “If they were burning wood, we’d normally see wood stacks outside, but we didn’t find any,” he said, noting that there also was no indication of log cutting or splitting on the property. “What happened is just terrible,” LaFlure said, noting that there was no indication of arson or anything suspicious. LaFlure and his deputy Scott Combs both were on the scene investigating the fire, as were representatives of the state Office of Fire Prevention & Control. Doug Strodel operated a business on Main Street in Warrensburg named D&G Hardware — a store that had a wide variety of goods ranging from day-old bread, candy, collectibles and coins to hardware, home furnishings and toys. His wife often worked alongside him. In later years, Doug and Gail were coin dealers, operating D&G collectibles in Glens Falls. Jan. 3, Warrensburg Supervisor Kevin Geraghty recalled Doug Strodel as a congenial business proprietor.

Published by Denton Publications, Inc.

“Doug was a good all-around guy, fun to be around, and ran a great little store; he was well liked throughout our community,” Geraghty said. “He and Gail will be sorely missed — it’s a really sad state of affairs.” Mid-career, Doug Strodel worked for a while as a part-time sheriff’s deputy, and he ran for sheriff in 1999. Strodel was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army veteran. In the 1990s, he served on the Warrensburg Town Planning Board and was subsequently a candidate for the post of town supervisor. Decades earlier Doug was merchandise manager of Clark’s Department store in Queensbury, recalled former Corinth Mayor Brad Winslow who stopped by the fire scene Jan. 1. Winslow, who was hired as Operations Manager of the department store, noted that Strodel was knowledgeable and had a dry wit. “Gail and Doug were a wonderful couple,” he said. Alexander, a proprietor of Alexander Funeral Home, said plans have not yet been made for services for the Strodels. Final arrangements are being coordinated with a nephew of the Strodels who lives near Rochester, he said. “People thought the world of Doug and Gail,” Alexander said. “This situation is extremely unfortunate. ■

Thomas focused his attention on some buildings that need to be renovated or replaced. He said that Countryside Adult Home in Warrensburg should have its residents’ rooms upgraded to make the facility more appealing, primarily to attract new residents. Also, he said the county’s highway maintenance garage in Johnsburg needs replacement to better accommodate workers as well as equipment. The county airport’s maintenance building also need to be replaced, he said, noting that a federal grant is being sought to fund the project. He also called for taking action toward utilizing the county’s idle railroad corridor — either resurrecting rail passenger service, or converting it to a rail-trail. “Whether we’re going to have freight, tourist and passenger service or recreational use, this corridor is a huge asset and it’s time to get moving on its future,” he said.

But doing so, he said, would be challenging as state mandates are getting more burdensome on county finances — and the cost of the state’s Aid & Incentives to Municipalities program are now to be paid from sales tax revenue withheld from local counties. In addition, Thomas warned that the new statewide bail reform laws would have unintended consequences, and had to be changed to better protect pubic safety. “The governor has proven he values Lake George as a premier tourist attraction,” he said. “This will allow our businesses and our whole area to stay competitive with other destinations.”

MORE MONEY TO BE SOUGHT FOR SEWER PLANT

Town of Lake George Supervisor Dennis Dickinson also hailed Cuomo’s new financial pledge. “We’re ecstatic about this grant,” he said, praising Blais for his years of lobbying for grant funding. But Dickinson added that more grant funding needs to be pursued to keep the plant affordable for residents of the town’s Caldwell Sewer District, whose sewer fees were predicted to more than double. Blais said he will be continuing his effort to secure an additional $100,000 annually for ten years from Warren County occupancy tax receipts to go toward the plant’s debt service. Dickinson is chairman of the county’s occupancy tax committee, but he said this week he would be recusing himself from any decision made concerning such a commitment of $1 million in county bed tax receipts. The new sewer plant is designed to produce effluent that contains far less nitrates

and other pollutants that have for years been migrating downhill in groundwater, with some of it ending in Lake George. The Lake George Association sponsored the research that showed that the existing plant, built many decades ago, was polluting the lake. LGA Executive Director Walt Lender lauded the latest state grant. “This is great news,” Lender said. We’re very thankful that Gov. Cuomo is making this commitment.” In a prepared statement, FUND for Lake George Executive Director Eric Siy said the grant enables the single most important Lake George protection project in generations. “Left unabated, pollution from the treatment plant and aging private septic systems poses serious threats to Lake George as a drinking water source for residents and visitors, and greatly increases the risk of harmful algal bloom that have wreaked havoc on the environment and economy of lakes across our state and beyond,” he said. “Gov. Cuomo’s leadership and New York State’s direct investment will help ensure we protect the legendary clarity and cleanliness of Lake George and the health of our regional economy for generations to come.” ■

NORTH CREEK | A small-scale earthquake occurred at about 10 p.m. Jan 3 in the southern Adirondacks. The 1.8 magnitude quake was centered approximately 10 miles southwest of North Creek, or about 20 miles west-northwest of Warrensburg, according to the US Geological survey. Opinion

Thoughts from behind the pressline

We need each other

I STILL \.\A\IE A "ANGOVER FROM 2016!

PUBLISHER

Just when you think it can’t get any worse. Wouldn’t you know we find a way to do just that? Of course, I’m referring to the state of aff airs of those who govern the country in Washington, D.C. The media is abuzz with opinions of the drone attack on Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani that killed this known terrorist and several others last Friday. For as long as there have been political parties and political opposition, there has been ongoing friction in the halls of Washington. Sadly, that is the messy thing about our republic, everyone gets a voice, and in today’s high tech world, there are far too many ways to air those voices. Unfortunately, some just don’t know when to stay quiet and let actions speak louder than words. The news media loves friction and chaos, so at a time when cooler heads need to prevail, we hear far too much about World War III. Saber rattling is one thing but the contentious nature of our current discourse within the nation may be sending the wrong message to those who we truly oppose in the Middle East. It not that the opposition to the current administration is necessarily wrong, but at a time when the nation needs to speak in a unified voice and our collective interest should forge a united front we find ourselves feeding the embers of war when the better approach on all fronts should be stone-cold silence. We can’t undo what has been done and by most accounts, everyone seems to agree these were bad people with significant blood on their hands and needed to be stopped. With the upcoming election, there will be plenty of time for debate over how this could have been played out differently, but for the currently war-talk climate, the appropriate comment should be, “no comment.” This includes reinforcing statements and threats from the White House. As a nation, collectively, we’ve been reserved in taking stronger action up to this point. We sent out the warning; it was not heeded. Thus allowing our action to speak volumes. National security must take precedence over short-term political or media posturing. The problem is, if we keep this internal divisiveness going, both sides will lead this nation to its destruction as we show our true enemies we would rather act like children then serious adults. Once the immediate crisis has passed, there will be plenty of time for Monday morning quarterbacking and criticism by all sides. ■

To the Editor: In her latest commentary published in The Sun, our duly elected Congresswoman decried the Constitutionally-mandated process for investigating improper overreach by a sitting President. In the aftermath of her embarrassing hyper-partisan efforts to disrupt the House Intelligence Committee’s hearings, in concert with her equally vociferous GOP colleagues, Representative Stefanik now seeks to make the case that her stance was righteous and patriotic. fact I have already sent such to Ronald Conover who chairs the board, that it is time to make Warren County a Second Amendment sanctuary. This is not a proposal I make lightly, but as someone who once took the oath to defend the constitution as part of my job, I don’t feel that oath has a time limit. With Gov. Cuomo’s latest gun control proposal to ban all gun parts being sold except through a licensed dealer, it could make it all but impossible to have a gun repaired since everything would require a serial number. It could also adversely effect any business that sells or needs to have a gun repaired. There are gun shops in Warrensburg, Lake Luzerne, Queensbury, Chestertown, North Creek and maybe more that I can’t recall. But more importantly, it’s time a stand was taken. How many more laws do we need that simply harass and hamper the law abiding? When is enough ever going to be enough? Even if the declaration only is symbolic, it’s would say that there’s a line, and Albany’s lawmakers have crossed it. I would hope that everyone would contact their town supervisor and tell them Warren County stands for the Constitution and the Second Amendment. Enough is enough and the time for that stand is now. — David LaPell, Pottersville ■

ing more money on another “study” to see about the viability of the Forum as an “Arts and Convention” center. Waste of money! As I have stated in the past, if the Town and/or Village were to purchase the property, it would remove approximately $51,000 from the tax roles. That’s a non-starter right there! While I enjoy the arts, the idea that Lake George could support a year round venue without Government subsidies is a pipe dream, and I find it difficult to imagine any private investor succeeding where others have not. If one is willing to take the gamble without taxpayer subsidies, great! I doubt it, but who knows? In any case, this should be left to the private sector. If the people who support this can find investors . kudos! I will happily purchase tickets for the events that interest me and not place additional strain on already overburdened taxpayers. — George Kearney, Lake George ■

New Wbg. Town Clerk and deputy now on duty By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | An entirely new staff is now at work in the Warrensburg Town Clerk’s office. Pamela Lloyd is the new Warrensburg Town Clerk, replacing Donna Combs who served in the post for 32 years until she retired, effective Dec. 31. She is assisted by First Deputy Clerk Mechylle Hammond, who started Dec. 19. Hammond replaced Gail Corlew, who retired as of Nov. 29. Former Second Deputy Clerk Joyce Reed is now at work as the town’s Water & Sewer Clerk. For the last 15 years, Lloyd was the office manager of Clute Enterprises Inc., a Queensbury-based construction company. Formerly, she served for two years in the same capacity for Adirondack Two-Way Radio. Beforehand — in the 1980s — she was supervisor of the data entry department of Enable Software. Lloyd grew up in Saratoga, and she and her fiance owned homes in Glens Falls and Queensbury respectively — but six years ago they both moved north to Warrensburg, where her fiance’s family lives. “We love the Adirondacks,” she said. “And I really like the town of Warrensburg — it’s very cozy.” Lloyd said she enjoys her new position as town clerk,

particularly the contact with the public, as well as the varied tasks which keep her busy. “There’s a lot of responsibility in the position,” she said. “And I like being a part of the team here.” Warrensburg First Deputy Clerk Mechylle Hammond has worked for many years in banking and finance. She started years ago at the Sagamore Resort as Internal Auditor and Accounts Payable Manager. She moved on to the Fort William Henry Resort working in payables and receivables. Hammond then transitioned to banking, working for Glens Falls National Bank for four years. She started off employed in deposit services, then was named dead teller at the bank’s Schroon Lake branch. Most recently, she worked in Glens Falls National’s Warrensburg branch. She lives in northern Warrensburg with her daughter Sophia, who is a second grader at North Warren Central School. “This opportunity to work in the Warrensburg town clerk’s office came up, and I’m pleased to take on the challenge,” she said. ■ Warrensburg Town Clerk Pamela Lloyd (seated) and First Deputy Town Clerk Mechylle Hammond (standing) — both new to their positions — are now helping local residents conduct their municipal business, including obtaining licenses and permits, and making payments of town and property county taxes. Supervisors vote to launch federal ‘abandonment’ of county railroad

Documentary explores connection between disease, environment

GLENS FALLS | The Crandall Public Library will screen the first film of its “In the Public Interest 2020 Winter Film Series” on Monday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m. “Living Downstream” is a documentary based on the 1997 book of the same title by Sandra Steingraber, Ph.d., an ecologist who has explored the link between cancer and environmental toxins. The Crandall Library is located at 251 Glen St. in Glens Falls. For details, call 518251-6508. There is no charge. A post-film discussion will follow. ■

WARREN COUNTY | Warren County government has reached a milestone in its quarter-century effort to resurrect its railroad. On Dec. 20, the county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pursue

the rail corridor. “Abandonment does not mean we are physically abandoning our infrastructure, and it does not mean we are going to rush out and rip up rails,” Moore said. He added that abandonment was a federally-mediated process to determine whether a viable freight usage exists for the line — and if there is not, the process becomes a tool to help Warren County move towards the most viable nonfreight use of this corridor. “The rail line may or may not actually end up abandoned by the end of this process,” Moore added, noting that one potential outcome could be “rail banking” the corridor for recreational use, a status that would leave the federal freight jurisdiction in place for the future, if a need for freight traffic develops. Moore added that another potential outcome of the abandonment process could be re-establishing passenger rail services if a viable operation ever surfaces. “I want you all to understand that passenger rail can still run on an abandoned line,” Moore said. Another outcome, hailed in the supervisors’ Nov. 18 Public Works Committee meeting, could be recreational use of the rail corridor, including hiking, biking, snowmobiles — and rail bikes, he continued. Moore said that the federal abandonment process does not necessarily decide the fate of the rail corridor. “This puts us on a path to make that decision with all interested parties involved when the time comes,” he said. “This is in contrast to the status quo, which has been our county taxpayers continuing to subsidize this corridor indefinitely with no clear direction established — and this just isn’t acceptable.” ■

the county’s railway corridor, county Administrator Ryan Moore presented the formal abandonment proceeding Dec. 20 in a more conservative manner, noting that abandonment would allow the county to have greater control over the corridor’s future uses. Before the vote at the board of supervisors December meeting, Moore stressed

Mindfulness workshop at the library

I

Several Warren County supervisors and county Administrator Ryan Moore listened to questions posed by Johnsburg residents and citizens of neighboring towns after Moore explained that federal railroad ‘abandonment’ doesn’t necessarily preclude future rail passenger or freight services — it just gives the county more control over the county rail corridor’s future. This ‘Community Conversation,’ held in North Creek Dec. 17, included extensive discussion about options for future use of the corridor, including some impassioned pleas by Johnsburg citizens to continue pursuing passenger and freight operations.

INDIAN LAKE | The Indian Lake Public Library will host a workshop on mindfulness led by Jodie Seymour on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. In focus will be the importance of self-care. Jodie is a local mindfulness practitioner who approaches this serious subject with lighthearted playfulness. She strives to reduce stress by raising awareness by being present in the moment and acknowledging our feelings without judgment. The library is located on Pelon Road in Indian Lake, and may be reached at 518-5444. This workshop is free. ■

From CLARK » pg. 1

Mid-career, Clark served as president of both the New York State Association of Towns and the New York State Association of County Clerks. During her lengthy service in municipal government, she won accolades from New York State and local officials, as well as various community organizations. Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said Dec. 3 that Clark had a dynamic personality that she put to work in local public service. “Caryl was a very bright woman, and she dedicated her life to the community of Lake George — She will be sorely missed,” he said. Deb Foley, who served as Lake George Town Clerk for several terms until her retirement last month, praised Clark for her achievements and character — and said that Clark taught her a lot about duties as town clerk, decades after Clark left the post. “Caryl was a fabulous mentor — she possessed a plethora of knowledge about town government,” Foley said. “I sought her advice often — I picked her brain” Foley added that Clark was congenial, outgoing, and was focused on the needs of others. “Caryl was the epitome of class — and she gave so much to the community,” Foley said, noting Clark’s charitable nature. Clark was a leader of the Lake George chapter of the Business & Professional

Women, a national organization that since 1919 has championed the rights and equality of working women. Clark was a charter member of the Lake George BPW — founded in 1952 — and was active in the group through its heydays and until the late 1980s, when it morphed into the Lake George Women in Need, Nancy Nichols recalled. “Caryl mentored a whole generation of women in BPW,” she said. Clark organized many BPW and WIN events, and volunteered to work on activities that she didn’t run, Nichols said. Foley said she was active in WIN, both of a contributor to the group’s charities until recent months. Nichols recalled how Clark not only routinely organized the annual BPW fashion shows, but she also served as a model in the presentations. “There’s not one thing that Caryl didn’t do in BPW and Women In Need,” she said. Others recalled how Clark was a political force — how she campaigned hard, whether for herself or for other Republican candidates. Many times, she ran for office unopposed. Pam Vogel, who was employed fi rst as County Historian and then worked her way up through the ranks in the county Clerk’s office, said she and Clark worked closely together for many years. “Carol and I were very good friends,” Vogel said. “She was a very fine professional woman.” ■

Preventing drug abuse and excessive alcohol use increases people’s chances of

living long, healthy, and productive lives. Excessive alcohol use includes binge drinking (i.e., five or more drinks during a single occasion for men, four or more drinks during a single occasion for women), underage drinking, drinking while pregnant, and alcohol impaired driving. Drug abuse includes any inappropriate use of pharmaceuticals (both prescription and over-the counter drugs) and any use of illicit drugs. Alcohol and other drug use can impede judgment and lead to harmful risk-taking behavior. Preventing drug abuse and excessive alcohol use improves quality of life, academic performance, workplace productivity, and military preparedness; reduces crime and criminal justice expenses; reduces motor vehicle crashes and fatalities; and lowers health care costs for acute and chronic conditions.

NY-21 Congressional District Update Stefanik Statement on FEMA Denial of Individual Assistance to Flood Victims WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has issued the below statement following the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s decision to deny individual assistance to residents affected by the Halloween floods: “I am extremely disappointed by FEMA’s decision to deny individual assistance to flood victims after approving federal public assistance that my office worked to deliver,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I have spoken with numerous families in our district who have lost their homes and their businesses. The impact of the Halloween storms has been devastating to our region and the livelihood of many families. My office will immediately work to ensure we address this devastating news directly with FEMA and advocate for families of New York’s 21st District to get the relief and support they deserve.” ■

Stefanik Statement on Decisive US Mission WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the below statement following the United States mission re: Iran Quds Force commander Soleimani: “Iran Quds Force commander Soleimani was responsible for exporting terrorism around the world and targeting and killing American troops along with tens of thousands of people in the Middle East,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I support President Trump’s decisive action to respond to Iran’s dangerous belligerence. “President Trump is reaffirming the proven doctrine of Peace Through Strength. Iran was given multiple warnings and instead chose to continue to escalate tensions and threaten US troops and diplomats. The era of leading from behind with pallets of cash is over. “Every American should thank our brave men and women in uniform and our Intelligence Community who executed this successful mission.” ■

AID DENIED SUPPORTING LOCAL JOURNALISM Help us keep The SUN delivered to 71,354 homes throughout the North Country and Vermont.

Individuals won’t get help for flood losses

The individuals and families listed below have contributed either a financial voluntary subscription totaling $6,084 or have submitted a request for a 3-year free subscription to The SUN.

By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

ESSEX COUNTY | Residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the 2019 Halloween storm will not be getting any help from the federal government, after a request for emergency individual aid was denied last week. More than 50 homes in Essex County were affected by floodwaters, winds and landslides, including several that were total loses. Throughout the Adirondacks and environs, 18 homes and businesses were destroyed, 135 received major damage and all told, 250 more were affected in some way by the floods.

Motorists in Ticonderoga wait for wind-blown wires to be cleared after the 2019 Halloween storm. Photo by Tim Rowland FEMA aid comes in two forms — compensation for public losses and for private losses. FEMA did agree to help compensate municipalities for the costs of repairing roads, bridges and other public infrastructure, but said no to individuals. Public losses exceeded $33 million. FEMA said the individual losses were “not of such severity and magnitude as to warrant the designation of individual assistance.” Individual assistance would have paid for repairs not covered by insurance, as well as lodging for those who were displaced. Elected officials expressed strong disappointment at the decision. “I have spoken with numerous families in our district who have lost their homes and their businesses. The impact of the Halloween storms has been devastating to our region and the livelihood of many families,” U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY21) said in a statement. “My office will immediately work to ensure we address this devastating news directly with FEMA and advocate for families of New York’s 21st District to get the relief and support they deserve.” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would appeal the decision. “It is unacceptable that the federal government has denied our request for individual assistance for the residents affected by the Halloween 2019 storm and I’m demanding the Federal Emergency Management Agency provide a detailed explanation on the denial,” Gov. Cuomo said Friday. “FEMA needs to step up, do the right thing and help these people restore and rebuild their lives and homes,” Cuomo said. “The agency’s sole mission is to help communities dealing with disasters and a one-sentence denial is woefully inadequate and does nothing to offer hope for these families.” Flooding was especially heavy in Southern Essex and Warren counties, as well as the southern reaches of the Adirondack Park. Warren Country reported $4.5 million in damages, including washouts on Rt. 8, which was closed for two days. In North Hudson, two high-profile recreational destinations were severely damaged, including the Frontier Town Campground, which has just opened in the summer, and the refurbished road leading to Boreas Ponds. In Warren and Essex counties, washouts were also reported in the rail bed leading to Tahawus a right-of-way that appears destined at some point to become a public rail trail. In total, 18 New York counties reported damage from the storm, which dumped more than 5 inches of rain in a short time on Halloween night and into Nov. 1. Heavy winds followed on the storm’s heels, downing trees and power lines. ■

Our minimum goal is to earn a voluntary subscription from approximately 3,500 individuals or families representing 5% of our total weekly distribution or we need to collect more than 35,700 free requests or more than 50% of the total papers delivered in order to convert the newspaper to a qualified periodical rating by the United States Postal Service. Doing so will help keep The SUN delivered to every home in the region with local community news, events, sports and pictures.

LAKE GEORGE | An event titled “Roar Into 2020” held at Lake George Holiday Inn — featuring a speakeasy and 1920s music — turned out to be aptly named, as about 300 attended this themed New Year’s Eve Party. Many of the revelers were costumed for the occasion, held in several adjoining dining and meeting rooms in the hotel. Mimicking the custom of the prohibition era, guests had to show they were invited before they passed through a curtain into the fully-decorated speakeasy — which featured a bar at the back serving spirits covertly in coffee cups. The hotel was sold out for the night. The dining tables featured posh accoutrements including gilded wine decanters and extensive decorations.

The “Jive Five” band played music from the 1920s, and guests with or without costumes danced to the lively tunes — and a number of the dancers won awards for their gyrations. Although costumes were optional, many dressed up for the occasion — wearing either full vintage outfits, or merely suspenders and a fedora. The hotel offered an array of children’s activities through the evening hours, allowing their parents to party while providing an entertaining experience for youth. Although the Holiday Inn has held New Year’s Eve parties each year since it was acquired by the Crocitto family about three years ago, this was their first New Year’s bash that was themed. Lake George Holiday Inn executive Vinnie Crocitto III. said that they’ll be holding a themed New Year’s Eve party again next Dec. 31 — and likely in future years. “The Roar Into 2020 party was a fun-filled evening — with friends new and old alike, it was the perfect way to usher in the new decade,” he said. ■

Burghers capture first place in their signature duals tourney By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg Wrestling team won their own duals tournament Saturday, proving their collective skills against some talented squads. The Burghers defeated five other teams in the region to take the title of the Warrensburg Duals, a tradition in Section II wrestling since the early 2000s. The Burghers vanquished Albany Academy 84-6, beat Beekmantown 66-19, cruised over Hoosick Falls 84-6, defeated Hudson Falls 55-28, and beat Maple HIll 63-24. Six Warrensburg wrestlers tallied 5-0 for the day, winning the championships of their respective weight classes. Undefeated for the tournament were sophomore Tanner McKenna at 132 pounds, senior Zach Shambo at 138 pounds, junior Zach Carpenter at 145 pounds, junior Hunter McKenna at 152 pounds, freshman Tristen Hitchcock at 195 pounds, and senior Jacob Clear at 285 pounds.

WCS FRESHMAN WINS INDIVIDUAL AWARD

Hitchcock was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper-weight competitors, and Caleb Svingala of Maple Hill — a 2019 state runner-up champion, was named earned the same title for the lighter weight classes. Coach Mark Trapasso offered his thoughts about these two athletes. “Tristen Hitchcock is a big man who moves well. He has a great leg attack — he doesn’t just go out there and throw people around,” Trapasso said. “Tristen is very skilled and is always working to improve.” Trapasso noted that Svingala is expected to win a Section

II title next month, and there’s a high probability that he’ll also win a state championship title. Area sports fans are convinced that Hitchcock will be competing in the state tournament this winter — he qualified for the tourney last year as an eighth grader — and the year before, he won medals in a statewide youth wrestling competition. This year, he’s amassed a 22-1 record overall. Two Burghers tallied a 4-1 win-loss record in the Warrensburg Duals: eighth grader Zach Olden at 99 pounds, and sophomore Dylan Winchell at 126 pounds. Five Burghers recorded a 3-2 record for the day: eighth grader Cameron Carpenter at 106 pounds, freshman Landian Templeton at 113 pounds, freshman Justin Rushia at 120 pounds, sophomore Thomas Combs at 160, and sophomore Ayden Rushia at 182 pounds. Two Burgher athletes split the five matches in the 170pound weight class: senior Joe Murdick wrestled 3-0, and junior Liam Edmunds wrestled 1-1. Trapasso praised his entire team for their achievement on Jan. 4. He noted that years ago, Beekmantown had won quite a few titles in the Warrensburg Duals. “We’re always looking for tough teams to compete in our tournament,” he said. This year’s edition of the Warrensburg Duals yielded the fourth consecutive victory for the Burghers. “This is a good start for our January stretch.”

BURGHERS SMOTHER GLENS FALLS 72-18

On Dec. 31, the Burghers defeated Glens Falls, a school with almost four times Warrensburg’s enrollment. Burghers pinning their opponents were Hitchcock, Templeton, Clear, Hunter McKenna, Edmunds and Ayden Rushia. The two fastest pins of the day were executed by

Hitchcock in 34 seconds and Clear in 40 seconds. Credited with forfeits were Winchell, Shambo, Zach Carpenter, Caleb Carpenter, Tanner McKenna, and Hunter Nemec. Next up for the Burghers is an Adirondack League showdown with Whitehall on Wednesday Jan. 8, followed by the Red Devil Tournament on Saturday Jan. 11 hosted by Vernon-VeronaSherrill High School in Verona, NY. Formerly known as the Central New York Classic, the Red Devil tournament features as many as 24 teams. Last year, the Burghers won this tourney; and in 2018, a very talented Burgher squad placed eighth. ■

Burghers overpowered by Hudson Falls By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | Despite a putting forth a stellar effort in the second quarter, the Warrensburg Girls Basketball team lost a nonleague game Jan. 2 to Hudson Falls, a school with 50 percent larger enrollment. Although the Burghers trailed 5-11 in the first quarter, they fought back with resolve in the second quarter to take a 24-19 lead at halftime. The Tigers subsequently regrouped, regaining a one-point lead by the end of the third stanza. Then with hot shooting and an aggressive defense, Hudson Falls outscored the Burghers 21-12 in the final quarter to win. Hudson Falls’ Brinley Inglee scored a game-high 17 points.

For Warrensburg, Abigail Ranous was the scoring leader with 12 points, followed by Hope Boland with 8 points, Sara Langworthy with 7, Tenisha Tuyrell with 5, Audrey Steves scoring two field goals, Jordan Barker sinking two foul shots and Aubrey Ranous hitting one from behind the arc. After an away game Jan. 6 in Salem, next up for the Burghers is a showdown with Whitehall on Friday Jan. 10 on the Railroaders’ court, followed by a home game Tuesday Jan. 14 versus Fort Edward, and a road trip Friday Jan. 17 for a game against Hartford. ■ In a game Jan. 2 between Hudson Falls and Warrensburg, Burgher point guard Hope Boland charges toward the goal while defender Keyleigh Osterhaudt attempts to contain her drive. WarEagles place 4th in Qby. wrestling tourney Hoffman, Duers win titles By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

QUEENSBURY | Two WarEagle wrestlers won championship titles and six others placed in the recent Queensbury Holiday Wrestling Tournament. The Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles took 4th overall as a team in the tournament, in which 14 wrestling squads competed. Senior Justin Hoffman won the championship of the 152 weight-class, and senior Cameron Duers took the title at 220 pounds. Sophomore Caleb Carpenter and senior Colby Hoolihan were runners-up at 113 pounds and 160 pounds respectively in the annual tourney held Dec. 28. In the finals, Hoffman pinned Skyler

Sturdevant of Glens Falls in 1:44, and Duers wrestled a match 5-4 against Section IV standout Josh Duke of Newark Valley to win first place. Earlier in the day, Hoffman won an injury default decision early in the second period versus Daniel Forbes of Catskill, and pinned Banjamin Verti of Schuylerville in 1:43. Prior to his finals match, Duers pinned Aiden Mickel of South Glens Falls in 29 seconds and Will Bell of Queensbury in 53 seconds. Carpenter wrestled a gritty battle against skilled athlete Casey Caruso of New Hartford, who placed in the Section IV championships last year. Beforehand, Carpenter pinned Paul Granger of Corinth in 1:43 and won a 17-2 technical default in only 4 minutes over Jimar McMaster of Queensbury. Hoolihan wrestled tough in his finals match against Section IV’s Connor Jacobson of Newark Valley. Beforehand, he won a 4-2 decision versus Scott Miller of Queensbury and

pinned Wyatt MacPherson of Glens Falls in 3:47. WarEagles placing fourth were freshman Grace York at 106 pounds and sophomore Carter McIntosh at 120 pounds. York achieved her ranking by pinning Andrew Post of

Newark Valley in 3:46. WarEagles Gavin McCabe and Mike Fuss also were ranked in the tourney. McCabe, an 8th grader, placed 5th at 126 pounds; and Mike Fuss, a senior, placed 6th at 170 pounds. ■

Hundreds of people from Warren County and the Capital District participated in the annual Lake George New Year’s Day Polar Plunge — and many ran to shore merely seconds after charging into the lake while others savored the experience and swam for a minute or two. For the revelers’ varied reasons for their participation in this signature upstate event, check out the Jan. 11 issue of the Sun.
