New deal to govern how broadband providers market speeds

GRANTS TO BOLSTER FARM-TOSCHOOL PROGRAMS IN ESSEX, WARREN COUNTIES

Providers dinged for misrepresenting services By Pete DeMola EDITOR

NORTH CREEK | Customers in the Adirondacks have long complained over spotty internet service. Now an investigation by the state attorney general’s office has found “significant failures” in how four major providers have marketed and delivered their internet speeds, confirming what many subscribers have long suspected:

NORTH CREEK | The Cuomo administration’s recent announcement that a major grant was awarded to help bankroll a hotel adjacent to Gore Mountain Ski Bowl has renewed optimism in North Creek that a local developer’s long-standing ambitious plans for townhouses, hotels and condominiums and a horse stable will move forward. Recently, Front Street Mountain Development was awarded an $800,000 grant by the state’s Regional Economic Development Council toward building a hotel at the Ski Bowl.

» Frontier Cont. from pg. 1 They’re being charged for services the providers cannot deliver. “For years, internet providers marketed ever-increasing internet speeds regardless of whether they could actually deliver,” said then-Attorney General Barbara Underwood in a statement. “No more.” As a result of the probe, four providers who provide service to the “vast majority” of New York internet subscribers — Altice, Frontier, RCN and Verizon — have entered into an agreement changing how they market speeds. The providers often failed to maintain sufficient network capacity to deliver on their speed promises, according to the report. The providers equipped subscribers with modems and wireless routers that did not reliably deliver the speeds subscribers had paid for under normal conditions, and falsely implied that subscribers were likely to access the advertised speeds wirelessly. The agreement comes on the heels of the attorney general’s landmark $174 million settlement with Charter Spectrum last month, reached after the state’s top cop determined the telecommunications heavyweight engaged in a “systematic scheme” to defraud and mislead

www.suncommunitynews.com

internet subscribers. Unlike in that case, the attorney general stopped short of accusing the four providers of outright fraud. But as part of the deal, the companies have agreed to a sweeping series of injunctive items Underwood said will a establish a “transformative” new nationwide model for how to fairly market internet services. The providers have 120 days from Dec. 24 to implement the following reforms: • Substantiate speed claims with regular speed testing; • Ensure sufficient network capacity to deliver advertised content from third party providers like Netflix; • Warn consumers that “wireless speeds may vary” and disclose the factors that might lead actual experience to vary, including the number of users and device limitations; • Discontinue any speed that cannot be substantiated; • Spell out the “relative benefits” of speeds and services accurately; • Train customer service representatives and other employees to inform subscribers about the factors that affect speeds; • Undertake other reforms designed to

WANTED!!!

Frontier Communications has long been the subject of complaints across the Adirondack Park over interrupted service and slower-than-advertised speeds. As part of the agreement, the provider must spend $25 million over three years to improve its upstate network infrastructure in “unsubsidized areas” to relieve congestion and improve service. Reports of spotty and interrupted service have largely been clustered in specific localities, including Franklin Falls, Wilmington, Jay and Chesterfield in northern Essex County; Minerva and Newcomb in the south, a corridor that stretches into North Creek in northern Warren County and Long Lake

and Indian Lake in Hamilton County. Details on which areas will see upgrades have not yet been released. “Implementation details will be worked out in the near future,” a Frontier spokesman told The Sun on Jan. 4. Frontier said they worked collaboratively with the state to develop an investment proposal that “delivers enhanced service quality to our customers, provides additional transparency in customer marketing information and adds improvements to our telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in rural unserved and underserved areas of the state.” “We look forward to continuing to work as a collaborative partner in efforts to close the digital divide and deliver reliable, affordable services to our customers,” said the spokesman. Frontier also agreed to advertise speeds as a range and to “refund half the future fees paid by any customer who is not capable of receiving 100 percent of the speed they were told they would get.” We want to hear from you: Providers have 120 days to reform their advertising practices. Are they keeping their promises? Call Pete DeMola at 518-873-6368 ex. 213 or email him at pete@ suncommunitynews.com with updates. ■

Newly-hired coordinators coming to local school districts By Pete DeMola EDITOR

WARRENSBURG | New York state has announced $1.5 million in grants to support farm-to-school programs across the state. The funding has been awarded to 18 projects and organizations, including Cornell Cooperative Extensions in Essex and Warren counties, both of whom received slightly less than $100,000 each. Funds will be used to hire coordinators who will oversee programming at participating school districts with the goal of steering locally produced fruits and vegetables into student bellies.

» Hotel grant Cont. from pg. 1 “I’m thrilled,” said Laurie Arnheiter, proprietor of Hudson River Trading Co. and associated enterprises on Main Street in North Creek. “A rising tide floats all boats!” The grant is to fund about 20 percent of the planned 40-room Ski Bowl Mountain Inn, which is to offer “ski-in, ski-out” access to Gore Mountain and the historic ski bowl. According to the awards announcement, the grant is to go towards infrastructure, the main lodge and a 10-unit guest cottage. The project is to be expanded in future phases to 40 rooms. Recent efforts to contact David Crikelear of Front Street Development weren’t successful, but Arnheiter, a Johnsburg town board member, said the Ski Bowl Inn would be modeled after the Whiteface Lodge. Front Street’s plans at this point call for a lodge and some outbuildings to be constructed as a first phase, town of Johnsburg

Cornell Cooperative Extension in Warren County Executive Director Dr. James Seeley said stakeholders are currently engaged in discussion with area farmers to determine inventory. Participating districts include Warrensburg Central, Hadley-Luzerne, Fort Ann Central School District and Glens Falls City Schools. “The goal is to bring more fresh produce into schools to improve nutritional values as well as fight the obesity rate that plagues the nation at this point,” Seeley said. “We think we have the right people to pull it off.” Funds will also be used to train food service staff, provide nutrition education in classrooms and cafeterias and purchase equipment to support food preparation. The state’s “No Student Goes Hungry Program” carries financial incentives for schools, who receive a .25 per meal rebate if at least 30 percent of the ingredients on menus are locally produced. Cornell Cooperative Extension in Essex County has hired a farm-to-school coordinator to serve as a resource for all

Supervisor Andrea Hogan said. “The Front Street plans have been under development since 2005, so we’re hopeful this grant will be just the ticket to get them building,” she said. A decade ago, the Adirondack Park Agency approved Front Street Development’s construction of a huge resort at the ski bowl, featuring 130 luxury condominiums, five hotels, restaurants and a riding stable. Those plans were first proposed to the town in 2005. But so far, only several townhomes have been built by Front Street, Hogan said. Hogan added that before the Ski Bowl Inn development goes forward, a land swap and a $200,000 payment to the town needs to take place. “It’s incredibly complicated,” she said. Hogan said there are mixed feelings among Johnsburg citizens about the recent Regional Economic Development Council Awards. Residents hope that the full resort will

The coordinator will aid in developing all facets of programming, including procurement, developing curriculums and gardening programs and looping in 4-H and Master Gardener programs whenever applicable. Cornell Cooperative Extension in Essex County Agricultural Resource Coordinator Dr. Carly Summers said the two-year grant program will be unique at each school depending on their size and specific challenges. Parent and student involvement is one of most important elements in achieving farm-to-school liftoff and to get stakeholders excited, said Summers, who encouraged feedback from the community. “Having community involvement in farm-to-school can make it much more strong,” Summers said. Summers can be reached at 518-962-4810. The initiative, which saw lawmakers double funding in the 2018-19 state budget, will serve more than 420,000 students statewide. ■

move forward, but there’s disappointment that two grant applications from the town were bypassed. One of them was to pay for a engineering study for a municipal sewer system to serve North Creek. Hogan said the council declining to fund the sewer system study was “a heartbreak.” “A sewer system in North Creek is essential to anything else that’s going to happen in town,” she said of the proposed wastewater infrastructure, estimated to cost $6 million. “We’ve gotta have it. Businesses are threatening to shut down because they

can’t expand their septic systems — their lot sizes are too small.” Hogan said town officials and local citizens are “chasing down” other sources of potential grant funding for a wastewater system. “A municipal sewer system would mean real opportunity for Main Street to reach its full potential,” she continued. “We’re ready for thoughtful development on Main Street which would really help our economic base. With Gore investing many millions into the ski bowl, we need to meet that with a vital and vibrant Main Street.” ■

Area basketball teams tally late-season victories Buckman, Nate Hopper and Ryan Miller also contributed to the score. Logan Catone was the top scorer for the Forts with 12 points. The game’s momentum shifted in the last half — North Warren establish their lead with a 26-6 third-quarter scoring spree, and the Forts answered back with a 21-13 fourthquarter effort. With the victory, North Warren is now 6-5 overall.

WARREN COUNTY | Several basketball teams in northern Warren County defeated rival squads this week, advancing their 2018-19 campaigns as winter sports’ regulation season approaches its conclusion. On Jan 4, the North Warren boys basketball team defeated Fort Edward by a score of 66 to 51 in an Adirondack League game, which shifted North Warren into a winning season record. Cougar sophomore Anthony Girard, a 5’6” sophomore, wowed the crowd with his 28-point scoring tirade — a career record — which included 4 three-point shots. Junior guard Reece Bradley followed with 16 points and 6’3” sophomore center Tanner Dunkley contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. Caleb Morehouse, Wyatt Gereau, Jay Hopper, Jack

LAKE GEORGE BOYS ADVANCE UNDEFEATED STREAK

The Lake George boys basketball team, reigning state champions, continued their dominance of Adirondack League play Jan. 4 by defeating Hadley-Luzerne 78-53. Top scorer was 6’ 6”senior center Chris Becker with 22 points, followed by senior forward Mason Flatley with 17 points, and

senior guard Connor Vidnansky with 13 points. Those score totals include Flatley’s four three-point shots and Vidnansky’s three from afar. Dan McMahon was the top scorer for the Eagles with his 26 points. Lake George’s feat of winning three state championships in the last six years has undoubtedly factored in their current ranking as the No. 1 Class C team in the state, although five other teams have undefeated records as of Jan. 6.

WARRENSBURG BOYS DEFEAT WHITEHALL

The Warrensburg boys basketball team defeated Whitehall 56-38 with a steady, determined effort throughout the Jan. 4 league game. Senior forward/guard Evan MacDuff was top scorer with 23 points which included 3

Senior forward Brandon Bailey contributed 13 points, and junior guard Mike Tyrell added three points. Austin Barnao scored 14 points for the Railroaders. The Burghers’ win improved their record to 4-6 overall.

BURGHER GIRLS RETAIN PERFECT 2018-19 RECORD

Meanwhile, the Burghers girls basketball team advanced their unbeaten streak by defeating Whitehall Jan. 4 by a score of 60-32. Spearheading this victory were junior guard Abigail Ranous with a career-high 20 points, senior forward Megan Hughes with 19 points and 8 rebounds, junior point guard Hope Boland with 9 points and 5 assists, and sophomore guard Sara Langworthy with 6 points and 4 assists. Adding to the effort were senior Danielle Baker with 4 points and 6 rebounds, senior Dianne Curtis with 6 rebounds, and junior Aubrey Ranous with 2 points. COUGAR GIRLS’ WINNING STREAK INTERRUPTED

Also on Jan. 4, Fort Edward girls basketball team — unbeaten for 2018-19 in the Adirondack League — defeated North Warren by a score of 53-43. The battle ended a five-game winning streak for the Cougars. Routinely in this game, Fort Edward’s tough defenders kept the Cougars away from the goal. Sophomore Emma Phelps was high scorer with 16 points including 2 three-pointers, followed by senior point guard Sydney Gagnon with 11 points including 2 baskets from afar, and senior forward Jodi Bartlett with three treys for 9 points, and senior center Jaclyn Urtz with 6 points. With the loss, North Warren drops back a notch to 7-4 overall for 2018-19.

Burghers win own tourney Wbg. now ranked No. 1 for state qualifier By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | Recapturing the glory of the last several seasons, the Warrensburg-Bolton wrestlers beat five teams Jan. 5 to win their annual six-way duals meet. A day later, the team learned they were seeded No. 1 in Section II for the New York State team tournament qualifier meet. In their duals tournament, Warrensburg-Bolton initially defeated Monticello 84-6, and continued their day’s campaign with a 78-12 win over Albany Academy, a defeat of Hoosick Falls 57-29, a 78-9 victory over Beekmantown, and a 60-21 win over Hudson Falls. Going 5-0 for the day were: freshman Dylan Winchell at

113 pounds; freshman Tanner McKenna at 120; sophomore Zach Carpenter at 126; senior Zack Davis at 138; sophomore Hunter McKenna at 145; 8th grader Tristen Hitchcock at 182; senior Chris Wilson at 220, and sophomore Robert Ranous at 99 pounds. Tallying 4-1 for the day were 8th grader Landian Templeton at 106 pounds; freshman Caiden Mosher at 132; Varsity newcomer Ayden Rushia at 195 pounds; and junior Jacob Clear at 285. One day later, the Burghers’ focus turned to the news about their No. 1 seeding for the state tourney. Due to their top seed, the Burghers will be holding the state team qualifier tourney in their own gym Tuesday Jan. 15. The Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles, ranked third in advance of the state qualifiers, will also be competing to represent Section II Division 2. In this showdown, the Burghers will be wrestling Whitehall, and the WarEagles will be taking on Watervliet. The winners of these semifinals will compete to be the team headed for the 2019 state tournament.

Warrensburg freshman Dylan Winchell dominates an opponent during the Burghers’ annual six-way duals meet held Jan. 5. Winchell went 5-0 for the day — and he’s undefeated this season at 23-0. Photo by Kim McKenna Coach Mark Trapasso said his team is determined to go far in post-season competition this year. “Our wrestlers continue to work on getting better each day,” he said. “Their goal is the state tournament, as well as individual successes in the Class D tournament and the Section II championships.” ■

Burghers defeat WarEagles 52-27 forfeits — freshman Dylan Winchell of Warrensburg pinned 9th grader Carter McIntosh in 25 seconds at 113 pounds; followed by senior Dustin Reiter winning a 13-2 major decision over freshman Caleb Carpenter at 120 pounds; freshman Tanner McKenna pinning 9th grader Quinton Fox in 1:41 at 126 pounds; senior Zack Davis decisioning senior Gary Spotswood 6-4 at 152 pounds; and sophomore Zach Carpenter and freshman Caiden Mosher winning forfeits at 132 and 138 pounds respectively. WarEagle senior Logan Duers (19-5) then won a notable match by catching his opponent — leading area contender sophomore Hunter McKenna — off guard, pinning him in 49 seconds at 152 pounds. WarEagle sophomore Justin Hoffman then pinned senior Ethan King in 31 seconds at 160 pounds — but soon after, Burgher Varsity newcomer Joseph Murdick, a junior, pinned freshman Logan Marissal in 4:22 at

LAKE LUZERNE | Two leading teams in Section II wrestling — Warrensburg and Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George —met in a showdown Jan 3, and the Burghers won the meet 52-27 as their younger wrestlers stepped up and contributed to the scoring tally. The opening match pleased the hometown WarEagles crowd as two of the top wrestlers in their weight-class battled it out, with senior William Mitcham (17-4) winning a 4-1 decision over Burgher junior Jacob Clear (21-5). WarEagle fans’ enthusiasm was amplified as 7th grader Gavin McCabe pinned skilled 8th grader Landian Templeton in 34 seconds at 106 pounds. Then the hopes of Burgher fans were sparked as four Burgher wrestlers defeated their opponents and three others were credited with

170 pounds. In the 182-pound weight-class, 8th grader Tristen Hitchcock continued the Burgher wins as he pinned Colby Hoolihan, a junior with a winning season, in 4:34. Then two of the very best wrestlers regionally faced off at 195 pounds: unbeaten WarEagle senior Cody York versus Burgher Nolan McNeil (16-1) who has been recovering from an injury. York won the match when McNeil, also a senior, exited the match with a turned ankle. The last two matches advanced the Burghers score. Senior Chris Wilson won a 12-6 decision over junior Cameron Duers, and sophomore Robert Ranous was credited with a forfeit. Warrensburg coach Mark Trapasso said the meet’s score could easily have been a lot closer. “The WarEagles have a ton of talent, but we happened to win some tight matches that could have gone the other way,” he said. “We wrestled well and we’re all looking forward to the rest of the season.” ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Time for an intervention

In any form of business partnership, once the raw opposing opinions are aired, the anger By Dan Alexander grows more derog• PUBLISHER • atory, cutting deep into the once fruitful partnership and both sides begin competing against each other instead of working together, there can only be a few options to put things back the way they once were. Both parties must agree to cease the behavior that has created the ongoing rift and consider seeking outside counseling. If that is not an option, then either one party or the other agrees to leave the partnership or both parties agree to dissolve the partnership. Like a marriage, no relationship can withstand the distrust, lying, misleading, argumentative and consistent inability to function. But what happens when the two partners are the executive and legislative branches of our government? Who will step up? When will the discourse that is stifling our nation in so many areas come to end? With both sides digging in their heels, it’s hard to imagine that cooler heads will prevail anytime in the foreseeable future. The only thing that does seem predictable at this point is that the situation will only continue to get worse. More anger, greater incivility and an increase in radical positions from the right and left will cause even further splintering. Our country is better than this. There is far too much on the line to allow ourselves to watch the government continue to spiral down in this divisive manner. As citizens, despite which side you favor, we must come together and demand that both sides put their differences and political aspirations aside and begin taking action to address the issues facing the nation. Solving the problems of our nation should be far more important than whose idea it was or who gets credit or blame for the action taken. Additionally, the national media must move toward balanced reporting. They are as much to blame for the divisiveness in this country. It’s no fun watching a sporting event when the announcers are openly rooting for one team while putting down the other. They must look at their role and put their own corporate motives aside if they are to be taken as serious impartial judges. Maybe 2019 will be the year that those who govern our country will start to act like adults and compromise the way our founders intended. ■

The Sun Editorial

Broadband reforms welcome, but public must remain vigilant Scores of Frontier subscribers have reached out to the Sun over the past two years to detail concerns over sputtering broadband and phone service. Subscribers have been plagued by extended outages. When the service is operational, speed tests reveal subscribers are receiving nowhere near the service they have been paying for. In painstaking detail, our readers have documented speed tests, interactions with customer service representatives and the deteriorating state of infrastructure on the ground in their communities. These reports constitute a patchwork of discontent running from Wilmington to Keeseville down to North Creek and deep into the central Adirondacks to communities like Long Lake. Resident concerns nearly boiled over at a public forum last February in North Creek designed to brief attendees on state-funded broadband expansion efforts. Again and again, we heard the same refrain: Nothing can be done. There’s no use. We’re fed up. But something has been done. Relief is now in sight as a probe by the New York state Attorney General’s Office into the state’s leading internet providers has not only validated and confirmed these long-standing complaints, but revealed “significant failures” in how the companies have marketed and delivered internet speeds. The result is what the state attorney general says will be a “transformative” deal that will change how broadband speeds are marketed nationwide. The providers — Altice, Frontier, RCN and Verizon — have agreed to numerous

Screening for cervical cancer saves lives

To the Editor: January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Northeastern NY wants to raise awareness that there are two ways to prevent cervical cancer. One way is through regular screening. Cervical cancer screening tests can find the cells that lead to cancer before it starts. These cells can then be removed. Screening also helps to find cancer early when it is most easily treated. If you do not have insurance, the Cancer Services Program may be able to help. We offer free cervical cancer screening to

provisions designed to clamp down on misleading advertising. They must substantiate speed claims with regular speed testing, ensure sufficient network capacity to deliver advertised content, and disclose the factors that might lead user experience to vary, including the number of users and device limitations. And the companies must discontinue any speed that cannot be substantiated, among other reforms. Frontier will also be required to invest $25 million in unsubsidized areas, although details are still forthcoming. Charter Spectrum agreed to identical measures, but only after getting slapped with a $174 million consumer fraud settlement last December, the largest-ever payout by a internet service provider in U.S. history. These changes are good news, but we’re not naive to think they would have happened without constant pressure from the public and local officials. Constant vigilance will be necessary. The providers have 120 days to implement the changes. We want to hear from you if they don’t. And it’s not enough to drop us a line if you continue to be fleeced by these providers. Subscribers must continue to ensure their complaints are funneled to the appropriate place, including the New York state Attorney General’s Office and Public Service Commission, and exercise their rights as consumers to hold these tech companies accountable. We’d be remiss if we didn’t note concerns about the state’s broadband program continue to bubble underneath the surface, particularly considering the 2018 deadline for concluding the universal effort, once proudly trumpeted, has quietly passed.

We encourage local lawmakers to develop a systemic structure to capture and direct all telecommunications-related concerns to the appropriate channels. The Essex County Board of Supervisors has created a broadband task force. Good start. And as questions percolate elsewhere, their colleagues across the region, from Franklin to Washington counties, should do the same thing with the ultimate goal of developing an effective regional infrastructure. Broadband, of course, isn’t a luxury, but rather a necessary tool to close gaps in economic inequality and educational achievement in our rural communities. Unfortunately, many readers have told us they’re considering selling their homes because of telecommunications issues. Or they would stay longer at seasonal residences if only afforded the proper online infrastructure that would allow them to work remotely. It shouldn’t have to be this way. Thankfully, progress continues on other fronts to augment state efforts. Microsoft is partnering with local providers using new technology like TV white spaces to bridge the rural broadband divide, including a project estimated to serve 300 Essex County residents. Federal grants are out there, but local officials continue to probe how they fit into state efforts. So for most of us, the state-funded efforts — as well as the state-ordered improvements to private providers like Charter Spectrum, Frontier and Verizon — mark the end of the line when it comes to bridging that gap. Let’s keep the pressure on to ensure we see these efforts through to completion and that no one is left behind. ■

to the editor concerning the Minerva-Newcomb sports program may have left your readers with the sense that the administration and school board of Minerva Central School are a group of selfish monsters who care only about a winning team. Having known and worked with these folks for many years, I can say with certainty that nothing is further from the truth. Lamphear’s comments alleging discrimination towards the international students by the school board president, Michael Corey, are particularly perplexing to me. Clearly, she is unaware of who Corey is and what he really stands for. For the record, Corey has served as the host dad for 15 international students since 2007.

» Letters Cont. from pg. 6 All but one played one or more team sports. A few were standout athletes. Many had never played team sports before. They did so with the encouragement and support of Corey. He has also strongly encouraged our local kids to participate in team sports — regardless of their natural athletic ability. I was the host mom to these same international students. We love all of our kids from Columbia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Spain and Liberia and have traveled all over creation to attend their games and get them to practices. We cheered them whether they won or lost. And in some seasons, the team lost every game and we supported them through the frustration of losing. We talked about what they learned and how important their team was. Winning may not be the only thing, or even the most important thing, but it matters to our international kids as it does to our local athletes. Building the belief and confidence that winning is possible matters. Maintaining team sports opportunities for our kids (both international and domestic) will get more difficult in the coming years due to the declining enrollments and fewer kids participating in team sports. I’m surprised that with this challenging discussion that Newcomb does not have appeared to have reached out directly to Johnsburg or to Long Lake which is several miles closer to Newcomb than Minerva. To the Editor: For months, immigration has preoccupied the nation. The current crop of 5,000-6,000 Central American asylum seekers is now viewed as a national problem, yet the moment that wave of immigrant wannabees enters the U.S. it becomes a local problem if the federal government accedes to their demands merely recording their names and handing them a road map. Spread across the whole southwest, they could be assimilated without much notice.

But suppose all or most of them choose to live in El Paso or San Diego and as a group they choose a public or private site to build shacks, toilets and drainage. When a public or private landowner objects, will the feds ride to the rescue? I suggest that the answer is “no” and it becomes a local problem. If the immigrants all choose a small city like Las Cruces, New Mexico, it will create a crisis. Sanctuary cities and states have shown a lack of will to cooperate with the federal government on immigration and now allow the homeless to occupy municipal parks and such. If cities and states will not protect their own property, who will protect private property and public peace? Woe to the private individual, whose property is co-opted by strangers. American Indians own or control many thousands of sparsely populated lands in the Southwest. Will the 21st century immigrants gathered near these lands treat the American Indians like the 17th century immigrants treated the American Indians’ forebears? - James P. Dawson, Elizabethtown ■

Letters should state fact — not inaccuracies

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Terry Hurlburt’s letter titled, “Disagrees with ‘prestige’ accusation,” which appeared in the Jan. 5 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: I take issue with the letter from Terry K. Hurlburt in your current issue of The Sun. The letter concludes that David ThomasTrain’s claim about 97 percent of scientists was “most likely 97 percent of the paid shills pretending to be ‘scientists’ like Bill Nye.” That statement is irresponsible and dead wrong. In fact, they are professional climate scientists who volunteer their expertise at least every seven years to prepare thorough update reports about our planet’s health for the UN’s IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control). Contrary to Hurlburt’s assertion, they do indeed provide plenty of “scientific proof ” that climate change is man made and a serious threat to our planet. I ask The Sun not to publish grossly ir-

responsible, inaccurate letters. By doing so, you contribute to the negative impression that the media is “fake news.” To your credit, you also published a superb lead article about acid rain and climate change in your Dec. 22 issue, titled “Warming Waters.” My only critique concerns the statement “So far this century, the occasional, extra-hot years…” What?! In fact, according to solid evidence, “Twenty of the warmest years on record were in the past 22 years.” And that is a fact, not a vague opinion from someone who just wants to shoot the messenger because he doesn’t like the news. - Allen Fitz-Gerald, Jay ■

Welcomes alternative energy

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Luke Dailey’s letter, “Wind and solar development would ‘scar’ Adirondacks” which appeared in the Dec. 8 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: I would like to respond to Luke Dailey’s letter to the editor in the Dec. 8 issue of The Sun. Dailey stated, “Urge your local government to adopt a moratorium on wind and solar development to allow them time to research and create laws that will protect you from many negative health, environmental and economic impacts.” Would Dailey enlighten us by stating what these negative impacts are? I know of no negative health, environmental or economic impacts, but I can see many positives in alternative energy. Wouldn’t it be nice to lower carbon emissions? Acid rain is killing much of our aquatic life and the seedlings of several species of trees. Wind and solar energy are the only two non-polluting forms of energy. We worry about climate change caused by excess carbon in our atmosphere, yet Dailey doesn’t want to do anything about it. He just plants his feet firmly and says, “I can’t say why, but I’m against it.” I doubt that the state is trying to sneak anything through the back door, and our local governments have the power to review any issue that concerns their area. The sky isn’t falling yet but if it ever does, it will be from the weight of

Hatred comes from lack of education

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Dan Alexander’s column, “Thoughts from Behind the Pressline: Love ‘em or hate ‘em,” which ran in the Dec. 29 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: I read your opinion on “Love ‘em or hate ‘em” in the Dec. 29 issue. You’ve pointed out all the problems of the country and even the source of our problem, hatred. Where does this hatred come from? The first answer, is lack of education. For the last 50 years, our education system has transformed itself into indoctrination not education. What allowed this? Man! There are many steps. The final step was the removal of the ultimate standard, God’s word, as our guide. Hatred is sin, but we have to be politically correct and even this letter will be deemed as hate speech. How do you craft truth to avoid offense? You deviate from God’s standard and lie. I’m sure to object to your opinion of a gal in the big White House would offend you, but if you go to the original standard you might see that does not seem to fit the standard we should follow. When man views himself smarter than his maker, the result is exactly what we see happening today. The Bible tells us in Genesis God was displeased with man and so he sent judgment. It also tells us he is still in control and judgment is the final end of this age. It seems to me, we should all try to repent and follow his teaching. Man is heading down the road of self-destruction. Let’s at least educate our children to truth of God, not truth of man. Looking to the past could do much to correct the problems we are facing. However, man is prideful and therefore not smart enough to change his ways even when they are wrong and pointed out to him. Cheer up. God still loves you, but time is getting short! - Carl Thomas, Stony Creek ■

Turning back the pages

A look back on history in January By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

EARLY WINTER MADNESS

January 1783 – George Washington, 51, was at Halfway Brook in Glens Falls. Jan. 1, 1697 – The population of Albany, New York was 714 people. Jan. 1, 1925 – Records showed that in Warrensburgh, in 1924, 40 people died and 30 babies were born, according to Town Clerk Charles E. Wheeler. Jan. 1, 1878 – The Warrensburgh News debuted with owner/editors J.W. Morris and A.H. Morris, from Granville, at the helm. Jan. 1, 1933 – Editor John L. Tubbs retired from the Warrensburgh News. (Note: Tubbs joined the Warrensburgh News staff in 1887 and the post office officially dropped the “H” in Warrensburgh on June 2, 1891. After his retirement, the “H” was finally deleted from the title of the newspaper and the last issue of the paper that used the hotly debated “H” was Feb. 7, 1934. Tubbs died in 1937. The debate is still going on today.) Jan. 1, 1948 – Berry W. Woodward, 71, colorful proprietor of the Woodward Funeral Home in Warrensburg, was found dead of a heart attack. He is best remembered for his glass enclosed, horse drawn hearse which today is in the Blue Mountain Lake Museum. Jan. 4, 2013 – There was a grand opening celebration at the Warren County Municipal Center in honor of the county’s 200th anniversary. Community celebrations took place throughout that year.

Jan. 6, 1759 – Widow Martha “Patsy” Dandridge Curtis, 26, was married to Colonel George Washington, 27, at New Kent County, Virginia. She wore a yellow silk brocade wedding dress “trimmed with pink lukestring, the skirt open down the front over a white and silver petticoat.” They were married for 40 years before he got a sore throat and died in 1799 at Mount Vernon, Virginia. Jan. 8, 1966 – A winter parade was held in Warrensburg and Supervisor Spencer LaFlure, of Chestertown, appeared on horseback in the Warren County mounted patrol. (Note – Spencer was called, as the younger generation today puts it, “one dapper dude.” He was a fine gentleman and a good friend.) Jan. 11, 2008 – Merv Hadden’s home and garage at 281 (now 4060) Main St. was demolished after a previous damaging fire. The building was constructed by Oldsmobile dealer Karl Duell in 1940. Mervin bought the building in 1953. He died in 1994 after being in the automobile business in Warrensburg for 47 consecutive years. Jan. 14, 2007 – Darlene Conley (“Sally Spectra”), 72, the much beloved star of the popular “The Bold and the Beautiful” TV soap opera, died of stomach cancer in Los Angeles. Jan. 17, 1706 – Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Josiah and Abiah Franklin, the 15th of their 17 children. He died in 1790 in Philadelphia. (Note – This man’s remarkable wit and wisdom changed the history of America.

As poet George MacDonald once wrote, “Where did you come from, baby dear? Out of the everywhere into the here.” Jan. 18, 1982 – At 7:17 p.m. there was an earthquake in Warrensburg. Jan. 22, 1932 – The Paramount movie theatre, corner of Ridge and Maple Streets, opened in Glens Falls. It was demolished in 1979. Jan. 24, 1902 – The Glens Falls Village Board officially declared the population of Glens Falls to be 13,355 people. Jan. 24, 1918 – The ice in the Schroon River, near the Warren County Home, was 32 inches thick. Jan. 26, 1950 – It was 72 degrees in New York City. Jan. 29, 1835 – Dr. Zephaniah Tubbs, Warrensburgh medical pioneer, died. (Note – In this column, in the Dec. 8, 2018 issue of The Sun, I mentioned this early Warrensburgh doctor who, buried in the local Warrensburg Cemetery, has a tree trunk half grown around his gravestone so that only a part of the inscription is left out to be read. I wrote that I could not remember the man’s name and that I was unable to go to the cemetery and read the stone because it was snowing hard that day. After the column had been printed, I woke up one late night and Tubbs appeared to me in a dream and he said, “What do you mean, you forgot my name!” How does one apologize to a man that has been dead for 183 years?) Jan. 29, 1971 — A fire did extensive damage to the Colonial Arms swimming

pool bar and era, in Warrensburg. (Note – Rite Aide pharmacy is located there now.) Jan. 30, 1787 – Albany merchant James Caldwell, founder of the village of Caldwell, now present day Lake George, received a land grant for 1,595 acres. (Note: I had not been to Lake George in a long time and a couple of weeks ago my son, Maclane Hadden drove me on a tour of the village and the newly modernized lake front where he sets up a booth at the annual car show every year. I was blown away! I can’t imagine what James Caldwell, who worked so hard to encourage and promote his little village in the Adirondack wilderness, which was formed on March 2, 1810, would say if he could only see it as beautiful as it all is today.)

APOLOGY IN ORDER

In this column, in the Dec. 8, 2018 issue of The Sun, I mentioned the 2013 book that was written by Steve Parisi, director of the Warrensburgh Museum. I have since been read that this volume, “Warrensburg, New York, 200 Years, People, Places and Events, was actually written by Sandi Parisi, Warrensburg Town Historian. It took five years of hard work on the part of this talented, dedicated lady to put this remarkable book together with, of course, the able help of her husband. Sorry Steve. I have got to tell it as it is! ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Adirondack Journal/Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

Ron Conover re-elected CEO of Warren County

reduce expenditures on the facility’s operations by about $190,000 this year — or about $300,000 less than the average annual expenditures over the past decade. He also praised the work of airport manager Don DeGraw and county Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos for devising a downsized runway expansion proposal that would save millions of dollars in taxpayer money and be less environmentally intrusive than prior plans pursued over the last decade.

QUEENSBURY | Fending off two challengers who sought to lead Warren County, town of Bolton supervisor Ron Conover was elected to his third one-year term as chairman of the county Board of Supervisors during the panel’s annual organizational meeting held Jan. 3. Conover received 551 of 1,000 weighted votes assigned to the county’s 20 supervisors according to the population they represent. He had been challenged by Glens Falls 3rd Ward Supervisor Claudia Braymer who received 307 votes, and Queensbury-at-large Supervisor Doug Beaty who garnered 142 votes. Conover said he looked forward to taking care of the county’s “unfinished business” that had been launched in his two prior one-year terms. “I am really humbled by the vote,” he said, acknowledging that one supervisor’s vote cast for another candidate could have meant a lack of a 501-vote majority. The three-way race was unique in at least 35 years for Warren County, as county chairmen have been selected weeks before in a closed door G.O.P. caucus — and with Republicans a solid majority on the board, the vote in the annual organizational meeting has for many years merely affirmed that choice. Beaty, who said weeks ago that he had strong bipartisan backing, said he was disappointed with the results. “The people who supported me got squeezed,” he said, adding that Republicans were pressured to vote for Conover, and Democrats defected to Braymer, who announced her candidacy only 10 days or so before the vote.

Braymer said she appreciated the votes she received. “I’m encouraged by the support, and I think it’s representative of a desire for change,” she said. “I hope Ron Conover will be as open and transparent as he says he will be.” Braymer was nominated by Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan, a Democrat, who said that women were under-represented in county leadership. Of the four women on the Board of Supervisors, only one was named to lead a county committee last year. “This is not adequate or accurate representation of the populace of this county,” she said. tee assignments that Conover had made for 2019: he named Edna Frazier to head up the Health Human and Social Services Committee and he had chosen Braymer — regardless of her chairmanship challenge — to lead the Environmental Concerns and Real Property Tax Services Committee. Beaty, despite his criticisms of county leadership, was chosen to chair the County Facilities Committee. Also, Conover chose Queensbury-at-large Supervisor Matt Sokol as Deputy Chairman of the county Board of Supervisors. In his state-of-the-county address, Conover cited the county’s stable tax rates, growing sales tax revenue and robust fund balance of $19.5 million. He also cited a reduction of $900,000 in health care premiums this year for retired county employees. He noted that recently consummated contracts for operating the county airport would

Conover said he was looking forward to the county board tackling the following issues: • Providing sustainable and adequate emergency medical services throughout the county, likely through establishing a county-wide EMS taxing district to assure timely, professional services. “The existing emergency response systems continue to be stressed and our EMS experts advise us that the situation is only getting worse,” he warned. • Modernizing the county’s infrastructure including roads and bridges as well as stormwater, sewer and water treatment facilities and transmission systems — with a first step of developing a “Comprehensive Capital Infrastructure Plan.” • Stepping up projects for environmental protection, including employing high-technology equipment reducing the use of road salt and helping lakeside property owners to upgrade septic systems. • Boosting tourism though expanding the county’s partnership with business owners — and working closely with the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Convention and Visitors Bureau. ■

Trailblazers ‘Snowball’ party this Saturday for sled riders Snowmobile club boasts hundreds of members By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

CHESTERTOWN | A crowd of snowmobiling enthusiasts from all over the region will undoubtedly be enjoying a savory barbecue meal and musical entertainment as well as swapping tales about their winter expeditions this weekend as the Northern Warren Trailblazers Snowmobile Club holds their annual Snowball party. This 24th annual club fundraiser, known in past years as the Winter White-out party, is to be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday Jan. 12 at a new venue: O.P. Frederick’s restaurant at the intersection of state routes 8 and 9 at Loon Lake. Featured at the event will be a drawing for a new snowmobile. This year the prize is a 2019 Polaris ES600 with electric start and reverse. Tickets are available at the party, as well as at Moun-

tain Hardware, Panther Mountain Inn, The Crossroads general store, Rob’s Motorsports, and other area enterprises. Plans call for the party to host both a deejay and a rock duo. Giveaways of merchandise and services donated by area businesses are also featured. The cover charge for the Snowball fest is $15 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under. The party will be held both inside O.P. Frederick’s, as well as outside in a tent and on the restaurant’s deck, and around the Snowball’s traditional bonfire. High-hat heaters will be keeping people comfortable on the deck and in the tent, club representative Kathy Hill said. The food features a choice of chicken or brisket of beef prepared in O.P. Frederick’s outdoor smoker grill as well as salad. The club, which has as many as 700 members, is responsible for preparing and maintaining the 85-plus miles of groomed snowmobile trails in northern Warren County. This trails system stretches from Chestertown and Brant Lake south to Warrensburg, northeast to Schroon Lake and Hague, and southeast to Bolton. Also, the club assists the town of Chester in grooming the ski slope as Dynamite Hill

Near the end of a Winter White-Out party held by the North Warren Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, club official Mike Hill (center) prepares to draw the winner of a new snowmobile, while other sled enthusiasts wait to hear Hill’s announcement. Photo provided Recreation Center. Membership dues and proceeds of club fundraisers go towards keeping the trails open and groomed. Hill notes that membership in the Trailblazers club reduces the state’s licensing charge by $45. The Trailblazers club is growing and new leadership has joined the long-standing dedicated members. Together, they have accomplished upgrades like a new large parking lot at their clubhouse on Knapp Hill Road and a boosted Internet presence on Facebook as well as a redesigned website. The club holds various activities, including guided trips, and regular Sunday pot-

luck get-togethers — and non-members are welcome at these meals.

YOUTH SNOWMOBILE COURSE SLATED

This Sunday, the club is sponsoring a session introducing snowmobiling to children. This state-certified Youth Snowmobile Safety Course, which starts at 9 a.m., is intended for sled operators 16 years and younger — but is also recommended for adult riders. Pre-registration can be conducted via the club’s website or Facebook page. The club also holds a poker-run in mid-winter and a season-end cookout. “We’ve got a lot going on, and new members are welcome to join the fun times,” Hill said. ■

Sun Community News updates now available on Alexa devices ELIZABETHTOWN | Alexa users can enable Sun Community News in their daily flash briefings so that they can receive a summary of the day’s local headlines. Alexa flash briefings offer one additional way of sharing news and information with the local community. Sun Community News & Printing’s team of reporters develop stories every day. Stories may offer general news and information, while others may share breaking news that is delivered on a more immediate basis. Amazon’s Alexa device allows people to bring these headlines directly into their homes. Sun Community News Managing Editor Pete DeMola

is excited that the headlines, which are updated throughout the day as stories are published, are brought into peoples’ homes through this technology. “We offer news in the printed version of the papers, on the website, on social media, on our billboard in Plattsburgh and now, directly into homes on Alexa devices,” he said. “We take our commitment to sharing local communitybased news and information very seriously. Alexa gives us another way to share that information with the community.” General Manager Dan (DJ) Alexander developed the flash briefing skill so that local users could access Sun Community News content on their Alexa devices. “We registered the organization with Amazon’s Alexa,

developed the technical aspects required, offered information about our news organization and were approved by Amazon,” he said. “We are really thrilled about being a part of this technology. It offers another example of our dedication to delivering our local content digitally, in addition to the traditional print version.” To enable your device to play The Sun’s flash briefing, you can say: “Alexa, enable Sun Community News Flash Briefing.” Then try it out by saying, “Alexa, what’s in the news?” or “Alexa, what’s my flash briefing?” Devices also can be enabled and various preferences set on the Alexa app. Step-by-step instructions are printed in today’s edition or you can find them on our Facebook page. ■
