LaFarr pledges to focus on ‘community policing’
Famed Nettle Meadow Farm to move cheese production to Lake Luzerne
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | The 50th sheriff in Warren County’s 206-year history was sworn in Jan. 1 with about 180 people attending the ceremony, held in the Glens Falls Elks Lodge in Queensbury. After taking the oath of office, new Warren County Sheriff Jim LaFarr said he’d live up to his campaign pledge to focus on “community policing.” “I look around this room today, and I see community policing has already started,” LaFarr said, gesturing first to the audience and to the two-dozen-plus sheriff ’s officers standing at the south end of the lodge’s banquet room. “It’s about connections, it’s about relationships, it’s about family.”

Nettle Meadow has earned an international reputation for its artisan cheeses — and demand for products has grown substantially, prompting the enterprise to undergo expansion. Photo by Thom Randall
LAKE LUZERNE | The nationally renowned cheese-making enterprise Nettle Meadow Farm in the town of Thurman is moving its production facilities soon to a landmark building on Route 9N in the town of Lake Luzerne, according to local officials. Work is now underway to convert the former Hitching Post restaurant and tavern into a cheese-making plant for Nettle Meadow that is likely to become a popular tourist attraction,
Lake Luzerne Supervisor Gene Merlino said last week. Merlino serves on the Warren County Local Development Corp. which has arranged loans to allow Nettle Meadow’s production to expand to meet a fast-growing demand for their various artisan cheeses. Just two weeks ago, the New York State’s Regional Economic Development Council awarded Nettle
Meadow $120,000 to expand their cheese-making operations — and last February the county LDC liberalized the terms of a loan to Nettle Meadow to enable the farm’s owners, Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase, to invest in higher-capacity processing equipment as well as boost marketing efforts. The LDC loan, granted in 2017, was for $115,000.

LaFarr said that while he felt slightly apprehensive about taking on the post of sheriff, he wasn’t overwhelmed by the responsibilities of his new job because he could depend on those he would be working with.

WARRENSBURG | Several people have stepped down last from their positions on the town of Warrensburg’s governing boards, and other citizens were appointed to take their place. Laura Moore, Warrensburg Planning Board member for about 23 years, resigned on Jan. 7. In recent years, she had served as the board’s chairman. Also, former town planning board member Rich Larkin, who was sworn in the same day at the town board’s organizational meeting as Warrensburg’s new town board member, resigned from the planning board. Both resignations were effective immediately. At the Jan. 7 meeting, the town board filled the two vacancies — they voted to appoint Susan Miller Hull to fill Larkin’s unexpired term which ends in Jan. 2024, and they named Linda Baker Marcella to serve out the remainder of Moore’s term. Also, the town board reappointed Suzanne Tyler, director of the local chamber of commerce, to a new five-year term. Warrensburg Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty expressed appreciation to both Larkin and Moore for their service to the town.

Supreme Court says snowmobile bridge ok Environmental groups’ lawsuit dismissed; DEC can build Cedar River Bridge By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER
NORTH HUDSON | New York Supreme Court Judge Robert J. Muller dismissed a lawsuit that charged a snowmobile bridge over the Cedar River violated environmental protection laws. Essex Chain Lakes Complex

Filed in January last year, the litigation brought by Adirondack Wild--Friends of the Forest Preserve and Protect the Adirondacks challenged construction and variance granted for the bridge. Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) planners designed it to connect snowmobile trails in Minerva and Indian Lake as part of Unit Management Plan for the Essex Chain Lakes. The connector trail would reach trails that lead to North Hudson and Long Lake. Muller reserved decision last fall, putting the bridge project on hold as separate snowmobile trail litigation moved through the Court of Appeals. But that lawsuit found against environmental preservation groups, and Muller proceeded to review the bridge case in Warren County Supreme Court. Muller dismissed all eight causes brought against DEC, which posited failure in review, inappropriate motorized use on state land or, generally, improper variance granted to build the bridge. Muller’s decision found DEC did take a hard look through planning at the Rivers System Act and potential environmental impacts. At Adirondack Wild, Managing Partner David Gibson says DEC evaded its own State Environmental Quality Review Act and, further, that the court let them get away with it. “In this instance, DEC sidestepped its SEQR responsibilities because it felt political pressure from the administration of Gov. Andrew Cuomo to build the motorized bridge quickly,” Gibson said in a statement after Muller ruled. “A Supreme Court deferred to DEC, which is too commonplace. Yet DEC is the sponsor of the SEQR Handbook used by hundreds of local government boards who receive interpretation and guidance on SEQR from DEC. “DEC sets their example. DEC sets their standard for how to do SEQR properly, how to do it right, how do it consistently well. DEC just set a terrible example for others to follow and should be embarrassed by its slipshod SEQR performance for a massive construction project across a Scenic River deep inside the Adirondack Forest Preserve. The Court should have called them on it.” Local government officials in the Five Town “Hub” area were pleased with Muller’s findings. “With all claims having been dismissed, the construction of the Cedar River Bridge, which provides a critical link
Photo of the Cedar River near the planned bridge site connecting trail systems between Minerva and Indian Lake. for the multi-use community connector trails for the Towns of Indian Lake, Minerva, Newcomb, Long Lake and North Hudson, can proceed. “The Cedar River Bridge and Chain Lakes Road will provide a route for four season recreation including hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, essential in providing a boost to our economies and provide opportunities for new business growth while sustaining our existing business,” Five Towns spokesman Ron Moore said. Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board officials also lauded Muller’s decision. “The Review Board is delighted with DEC’s defense of its wellvetted plan to construct a bridge over the Cedar River against environmental groups’ legal arguments that the bridge would violate state law,” they said in a statement. “The plan to replace a historic washed-out bridge over the Cedar (River) was approved after an extensive public comment process that allowed all interested parties an opportunity to have input.” Local government officials have maintained that the multiuse trail with a bridge over the river will be used in all seasons by hikers, snowmobiles, horses and skiers alike. “The activities of those users is expected to provide economic benefits to the towns and the businesses in the towns, as they provide goods and services to the users.” Review Board Executive Director Jerry Delaney applauded DEC “for defending its plans for the replacement of the Cedar River Bridge and for its recognition that all the people of New York State have a right to recreate in the Adirondacks.” ■
EARTHQUAKE RATTLES BORDER TOWNS
Magnitude 3.3 centered north of border By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER
JAY |A small earthquake rattled parts of the northern Adirondack region at 5:38 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake at 3.3 on the Richter Scale,
10 kilometers south of Ormstown, Quebec, just on the U.S.-Canadian border. The quake occurred at a depth of 6.6 miles as measured by the Lamont-Dherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Rattling was felt by Sun Community News reporter Tim Rowland in Jay. “There were three or four lamps rattling at around 5:30 a.m., and I was blaming the cat — until I remembered we only have one cat. Dogs were very agitated, too,” he said via email. The shook some homes in Lake Placid, Plattsburgh and in Keene Valley, according
to USGS citizen reports, and was felt as a rumbling in the border community at Cornwall. It is the second small earthquake to strike the North Country region in a week. A smaller quake, magnitude 1.2, shook northwest of Warrensburg at around 9:22 a.m. on Jan. 7. ■

QUEENSBURY | Assemblyman Dan Stec (R ,C ,I- Queensbur y) announced last week that the Warren County Republican Party has officially endorsed his campaign for the New York State Senate. At the meeting to formally consider Stec’s candidacy, 128 members of the Warren County Republican Party were present. In a strong show of support, all 128 unanimously voted in favor of his endorsement. Stec, who has represented Warren County as an assemblyman since 2013 and Queensbury supervisor in the years prior to that, is proud to have earned the party’s support and looks forward to working with them in the months to come. “I’d like to thank the Warren County Republican Party for its endorsement of my State Senate campaign,” Stec said. “Warren County is where I live and where I’ve served as a local and state official. These efforts to improve our county wouldn’t have been possible without the party’s support. As we go forward, I can’t wait to keep working with them to ensure Warren County continues to have the strong, honest representation it needs and deserves in the Senate.” “The Warren Count y Republican Party is proud to endorse Dan Stec for State Senate,” said Warren County Republican Party Chairman Mike Grasso. “As a naval officer, a local official right here in Warren County and state assemblyman, Dan has repeatedly risen to meet the challenges we face and he’s the best choice to succeed Betty Little as our next senator.” ■

In his introductory remarks, former county Undersheriff Bob Swan said that with LaFarr and Comeau in charge, the 200-or-so employees of the county sheriff ’s office would enjoy enhanced camaraderie. “It’s already like a big family, but it will come even closer now with these two guys at the helm,” Swan said, noting that LaFarr “did a phenomenal job” years ago when Swan observed his work as an investigator.

Thoughts from behind the pressline
Prognosticating 2020 By Dan Alexander
0~ U\SSKIN BUTW TUt:CONTENT
Among the things I dislike about coverage of national sports are the various articles written about the possible outcomes of future events. It always seems like a waste of time not only reading the article but placing any faith in the prediction. The NFL has had some interesting playoff games the past few weeks but the real enjoyment of watching the game doesn’t come from knowing the outcome but from watching the twists and turns of fortunes that are the best part of the game. If you watched these games, you know what I’m commenting about. If you didn’t watch, you probably have no interest in what took place, so I’m going to try and give you the play-by-play. More important than the NFL are the upcoming 2020 elections and how our world turmoil will be affected by their outcome. I have no intention of making any predictions here. Our role is neither to take sides nor endorse candidates, and certainly not to pick winners and losers. But like most national elections we have in this country, the outcomes have a significant impact on our lives. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, or if you are a fence straddler, we’ll all be keeping an eye on the upcoming primary races set to start Feb. 11 in nearby New Hampshire. As the races heat up, we know many of you will have opinions on the candidates, the issues and the controversies that will be sure to bubble to the surface during the year. So, here are a few predictions we feel confident making: We know we’ll get many letters to the editor from readers looking for us to publish their thoughts and endorsements. We also can confidently predict that many of those running for office will be seeking free coverage. Our goal is to be a fair arbitrator of the information and requests for space. Letters to the editor will be closely monitored to ensure the comments are issued based and fair to all. Once the races begin, candidates will be offered interviews. Major events affecting the candidates may be covered if we view it as hard news, but we will extend comment opportunities to their competitors. Readers that want to profess their support for candidates, as in the past, will be offered the opportunity to purchase space in the newspaper. We may be a free paper, but space is valuable; fairness can only be accomplished when the paper isn’t perceived as having its thumb on the scale. As always, questions or concerns about our coverage can be directed to me. Good luck to all. ■

Presidental wisdom from veteran
To the Editor: “To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public,” said Teddy Roosevelt in... 1918. — Joe DeMarco, Jay ■
Eyes on the money
To the Editor: Jobs, health care, housing, training and education. Power from renewable energy sources, repaired and upgraded infrastructure and power grids. Money to retrofit buildings. Overhauled transportation system. Clean manufacturing. Real people, not corporate “people” influencing politics.
Please note in last week’s edition the article regarding the Lake George’s new sewer plant, The Lake George Waterkeeper and The FUND for Lake George collected the data and wrote the 17 month study that documented the impact from the Lake George sewer plant to Lake George and its watershed. ■

The planning board is likely to name a new chair at their next meeting. Susan Hull had served an alternate member on the planning board for some time, and Marcella served as town board member from January 2012 though last month. In addition, the town board reappointed William Oehler to the town Zoning Board of Appeals to serve an additional five-year term.
PUNCH-CARD PAYMENTS REINSTATED
In other matters conducted at the Jan. 7 meeting, the town board decided to provide local citizens with two options in paying for their trash disposal — either in cash at the transfer station, or by using the traditional punch cards. The town had recently converted to cash payments, but local officials heard that many people still

What’s not to like? Expensive? Yes. (Sort of like deciding to put a person on the moon within one decade. Only far more ambitious, and far more crucial, for far more people.) Are we worth it? Some of us think so. But to make sure the changes are not on the backs of those least able to afford it, makes more sense for those than can easily afford it to pay more, don’t you think? It’s a new decade. Let’s get on with it. Note: Don’t let them fool you. You can have your hamburger, your plane trip, your old building. And unless your annual income is more than $10 million, your taxes are not going to go up. Socialism? No more than social security, Medicare, consumer rights, worker’s rights… Don’t let them fool you. — Katharine Preston, Essex ■

Remembering 60 years ago: January 1960 By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST
Thought for the day “The more things change, the more they are the same.” — Folk proverb
NEW STEER AT OSCAR’S MARKET
Among the scenic wonders, of Warrensburg, is the highly mobile Black Angus steer which rides atop of Oscar’s meat market truck. The steer was created by Jack Binder, local artist, from a combination of lightweight and water proof materials developed in his local studio. Oscar Quintal chose this symbol of his business because he specializes in steaks, roasts and beef from Black Angus steers. An oil of a herd of Black Angus cattle painted by Binder adorns the front of Oscar’s Smoke House on Main Street, Warrensburg. Binder’s studio is at the old race track. He is currently working on a group of African jungle figures he is creating for Storytown (now the Great Escape) in Lake George. (Note – The old racetrack was located where there are streets now behind Ashe’s Hotel.
BEST FOOD IN TOWN
Mark Bruce, proprietor of the Colonial Arms Hotel and restaurant, flat out denied rumors that the hotel has been
sold. “I have not sold the hotel and I do not contemplate selling it,” he told the Warrensburg News. He is now in the process of building a large indoor swimming pool and snack bar and plans additional improvements. The historic old hotel is a popular place for townspeople to enjoy a fine Friday night special dinner. A complete meal is $1.95 which includes a choice of fried Sea Scallops, Crabmeat Dewey and Swordfish which top an extensive menu. Pizza is the special at $1 each on Wednesday nights. (Note – The Colonial Arms was located where Walgreen’s Pharmacy is today.)
Tommy has not been idle during his long illness as he has learned to knit and has knitted mittens and socks for all the members of his family.
Mrs. Ruth Lockhart, a 25-year-old wife and mother of two, who resides on the East side of Lake George, on Friday, Jan. 1, 1960 took the first swim in Lake George for the new year. Mrs. Lockhart, the wife of Donald Lockhart, proprietor of the Lockhart Nursing Home in Lake George, went in the water as a part of her New Year’s resolution to go swimming once a month every month of this coming year. (Note: I never met this lady but Donald Lockhart and my late husband, Merv Hadden were buddies as they both had boats on the lake. The good old days.)

Tommy Beadnell, 13, of Thurman, has returned home from the hospital. He has been ill for over a year and requires a blood transfusion every other day.
MAN DIES IN CORINTH
Joseph Bolduc, 20 years old, of Corinth, was crushed to death Saturday, Jan. 16, 1960, under a falling tree on Potash Mountain where he was cutting pulp wood. His body was found under a fallen tree by a fellow worker, Evariste Guay, with whom he had gone into the woods with that morning. Working with a power saw it is believed that he did not hear the tree falling and never saw what hit him. A three year old North Creek child chocked to death on a piece of toast on Friday, Jan. 15, 1960. The boy was Arthur Walden Jr., son of Arthur Walden Sr. Dr. Jaques Grunblatt pronounced the child dead on his arrival.
NEWS FROM AFAR
Word has been received of a son being born on Nov. 1, 1960 to Rev. and Mrs. E.J. Flewelling in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), East Africa. The couple are former residents of Warrensburg serving as missionaries. The baby has been named Gerald Lloyd and he has a brother, Edward Philip Flewelling. — Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518 623-2210.
MLK MARCH, CELEBRATION SET FOR JAN. 18 By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
GLENS FALLS | For more than 20 years, hundreds of people in Warren County have annually spent a winter afternoon to show their support of racial justice, unity, peace and social diversity. They’ve done it by participating in the Glens Falls Martin Luther King Day celebration, either by marching through the city, attending the memorial service, or both. This year’s celebration is to occur on Sunday, Jan. 19, and this week local NAACP vice president Lee Braggs welcomed all people in the region participate. “The Martin Luther King Day celebration has grown over its 20-plus years and truly morphed into a community-wide event,” he said. “But our ultimate goal is to have as many people across Warren and Washington counties participate — we are the only annual event of its kind north of Albany, and we want to build on what we’ve got.” The event starts off at 3:15 p.m. with and community leaders, NAACP officials and

governmental representatives delivering remarks in the lobby of Glens Falls City hall, followed by a march several blocks to Christ Church Methodist located at 54 Bay St. The ecumenical Martin Luther King Day service at the church begins at 4 p.m. The theme of this year’s ser v ice is “Expressing Martin Luther King’s Dream through the Arts,” and it features performances by three high school choirs and participation by students from various area churches, temples and schools. Also featured will be displays of artwork created by dozens of area students, interpreting the event’s theme. The doors of the church will be open beginning at 3:30 p.m. for meditation — and a fellowship session is to be held in the church hall following the service, Braggs said. “Although we live in turbulent times as a nation, we are continuing to move forward,” he said. “It’s important we come out and celebrate this man who gave up his life for his beliefs — His legacy is about non-violent protest to achieve peace and gain equality.” The “snow day” for the celebration and march is set for Monday, Jan. 20. ■

Five Burghers earn All-State football honors By Thom Randall
Warrensburg-North Warren running back Jaron Griffin breaks a tackle as he runs into the end zone for a touchdown during the Section II Class D title game last November, which the Burghers won to capture the championship. This week, Jaron Griffin was named an All-State First Team athlete for his work as a defensive linebacker, and four other team members won All-State honors — Jesse Griffin, Tristen Hitchcock, Dylan Winchell and Zach Shambo.
CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | For the first time in local history, four athletes on the Warrensburg football squad have been awarded AllState honors, small-school division, and a fifth earned Honorable Mention status. The announcement was made Jan. 8 by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Early this week, Burgher football coach Mike Perrone reflected on the athletes’ attributes. The five were key players on the 2018 and 2019 Warrensburg-North Warren football teams that won two consecutive Section II Class D titles. Awarded as an All-State First Team

defensive player was Burgher linebacker Jaron Griffin, a senior. Jaron executed 66 tackles this past season, and 169 over his four-year varsity career. Also, he served as a running back intermittently to keep opponents off-guard.

“Jaron’s been a really great player for a handful of years — he’s been giving opponents trouble since he was a freshman,” the coach said. Named as an All-State Second Team offensive player was Jesse Griffin, also a senior, who
has won the honor for two consecutive years. For years, fans have enjoyed his powerful, fast and wily yardage gains as a running back. He has rushed for 1,563 yards this last season alone. “Jesse has had a great high-school career — we’ll miss both Jaron and Jesse next year,” Perrone said. Also honored on the All-State Second Team was sophomore Dylan Winchell as an allpurpose offensive player, as well as freshman Tristen Hitchcock as a defensive linebacker. “You hardly ever see underclass players make All-State teams — this is an outstanding achievement for them both,” Perrone said of Winchell and Hitchcock. WarEagles excel in tournament
From FOOTBALL » pg. 8
“Tristen just turned 14 several days ago — and for him to dominate the way he did at 13, is incredible — They will both be recognized like this several more times before their high school careers are over.” Accorded A ll-State Honorable Mention status was senior linebacker Zach Shambo, who averaged 7.3 tackles per game this year. “Zach is a team leader — he’s hard worker every single practice,” Perrone said. “And every game, he’s flying around the field making tackles — and he’s only 145 pounds or so.” Perrone said that for these five athletes to be awarded at the state level reflects their commitment to football — which extends to working out year-round. “It’s really no surprise these guys got the All-State awards, considering they are the hardest workers off-season,” he said. “They are all such good role models for our other athletes.” ■

BURGHERS WIN BATTLE WITH RAILROADERS
The Burghers’ meet three days earlier versus Whitehall-Fort Ann was far closer than the final score indicated. Over this key league game, the lead shifted back-and-forth as action-packed and suspenseful matches took place. Jacob Clear was credited with sparking a rally midway through the meet, as he won a tough match by executing a takedown in the closing 20 seconds of his bout; but the Railroaders fought back. The meet closed out with three of Clear’s teammates — Hunter McKenna, Tom Combs and Joe Murdick — securing the victory by winning three consecutive bouts. At 152 pounds, McKenna pinned Troy Austin in 3:12 at 152 pounds; Tom Combs decisioned Brennan Card 11-3 at 160 pounds, and Joe Murdick finished off the meet

For the past two years, the Burghers won this qualifier duals meet and represented Section II at the state team tournament. The four finalists for the state team tourney, in order of seeding, are: Cobleskill, Warrensburg, Tamarac and Watervliet. This tournament is to be held on Tuesday Jan. 21, with Warrensburg paired with Tamarac in one semifinal meet and Cobleskill versus Watervliet competing in the other. Soon afer, the two victors battle in the finals to earn the berth in the state team tourney, to be held Feb. 1. In the meantime, the Burghers face HadleyLuzerne/Lake George on Jan. 15, and will be competing in the six-team Granville Duals meet on Saturday Jan. 18. At this point in the season, Warrensburg is 3-0 in the Adirondack League and 18-1 overall. ■

Placing fifth were Dylan Winchell at 126 pounds and Joe Murdick at 170 pounds. “We had a very solid showing in the tournament,” coach Mark Trapasso said. “There was very, very tough competition, and our kids wrestled well.” Winning the tourney was Fulton Central School; the host district placed seventh. In his title bout, Hunter McKenna pinned Branton Carpenter of South Lewis Central at 5:24 — following the semifinals in which he pinned Brady Buttice of the BainbridgeGuilford-Afton-Harpursville team in 2 minutes. North Warren continues unbeaten streak By Thom Randall
Alongside Miller’s scoring tirade in the away game against Salem, Girard scored 24 points; Dunkley scored 9 points primarily by drawing multiple fouls; senior forward Mario Willette and senior guard Nate Hopper scored 6 points each; junior guard Jack Jennings contributed 5 points; and Ryan Hill hit a foul shot. Aden Terry led the Generals with 16 points. Cuyler said the Cougars have a formidable challenge over the next five games, as their upcoming opponents are among the Adirondack League’s best teams.

CHESTERTOWN | The North Warren basketball team remained undefeated this as they exhibited team chemistry, strategic playmaking, efficient rebounding and hot shooting in a 80-52 defeat of Salem Jan. 10 and a 78-32 victory over Fort Edward four days earlier. North Warren was 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Adirondack League as of Jan. 12 as they passed the mid-season mark. Senior guard Ryan Miller stepped into the spotlight in the Salem game, scoring 29 points, which set a personal career record. Miller sank 11 field goals, three of them from behind the arc — plus four foul shots. “Ryan came out on fire in Friday’s game,” said new North Warren Boys Basketball Coach James Cuyler. “Some other guys of ours were struggling early, and he really picked up the slack.” Cuyler said that Miller, the team captain, has been working hard and keeping the other players motivated. “He’s the heart and soul of the team,” Cuyler said. “Whatever I ask him to do, he does.” While the media has focused since 2018 on the high-scoring inside-outside duo of junior point-guard Anthony Girard and junior center Tanner Dunkley, Cuyler points out the depth

of talent on the team. “We have a full roster, and any one of our athletes can step up at any moment,” he said, noting that although North Warren is one of
the smallest schools in the area, his players are confident they can compete against any team. “They feel they’re as good as anybody else on the court,” he said.
On Jan. 6, North Warren defeated Fort Edward 78-32 with Girard leading the pack with 32 points, followed by Dunkley with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Willette had a good game with 10 points and 10 rebounds; Miller added 8 points; senior guard James Steen tallied five points; Jennings added 4; and senior guard Reece Bradley chipped in two points. After a game against Corinth on Jan. 15, North Warren is scheduled to play legendary Lake George on Friday, Jan. 17, followed by an away game a week later against division leader Granville — then comes a road trip to Argyle on Jan. 29. Cuyler noted that the latter two schools have passionate and vocal basketball fans. “Well be going into hostile territory, and it will be wild!” he said. ■
