CHESTERTOWN | A new “Chester Wellness Center” featuring workout facilities and training, behavioral health counseling — and various other programs encouraging a healthy lifestyle — may be established in town if plans now under consideration materialize. The facility and its programming would be a collaborative venture of the town of Chester, the YMCA Adirondack Center and Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said last Friday. The town is applying for a $250,000 grant

QUEENSBURY | The partial government shutdown will be affecting Warren County citizens who utilize various social services programs. But the major consequence of the idle federal workforce may be felt in reduced sales tax revenue, county Administrator Ryan Moore warned area officials last Friday. Moore said that the major concern has been the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

from Adirondack Health Institute to establish the center at the Chester Municipal Center. The Chester Town Board authorized Leggett to apply for the grant at a previous meeting. YMCA personnel would staff the center, which would encourage wellness with programs for citizens of all ages, town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said. “This concept is a response to people voicing a need for having some place for seniors to go for fitness programs,” he said. “This started when the YMCA Adirondack Center burned last fall, and they moved into the town hall and saw what a great facility we have and how it meets a lot of their programming needs,” he said.

NEWCOMB | The Newcomb Board of Education named a committee last week to move the school system’s sports programs forward, following a decision by Minerva Central Schools to break with a long-standing agreement between the two schools to share athletes. The committee will consist of community stakeholders, and is expected to submit a report to the board in the near future. It will have to deal with a number of questions, including what sports Newcomb will participate in, as well as budgeting and scheduling issues.

» Newcomb sports Cont. from pg. 1 Newcomb had hoped that Minerva might delay its decision for a year to allow more time to prepare, but the Minerva board voted on Jan. 10 to partner instead with Johnsburg Central in the coming school year and beyond for the purposes of athletics. Now, Newcomb is faced with a number of hasty decisions, such as how to budget for transportation, uniforms and new sports equipment. “There are a lot of things that are going to impact the budget,” said Newcomb Superintendent Skip Hults. “We have to really get on this right now.” Newcomb and Minerva are both facing declining enrollments that have impacted their sports programs. About 25 years ago, the schools agreed to share athletes so they would have enough players to participate in team sports, including soccer, basketball, boys baseball and girls softball. But Minerva feared that even with the partnership, the two schools would not have enough athletes to fill out team rosters, particularly in the spring. That led the system to accept an invitation from Johnsburg, which is both larger and closer than Newcomb. Newcomb, an isolated community that has few if any prospects for new partnerships, now faces a number of changes, Hults said. For starters, it will return to its historic team name, the Huskies. It will also most likely have to add individual sports such as golf or archery to replace team sports. These moves would have further budget implications, Hults said. For example, Newcomb has a golf course, but it probably isn’t playable until mid May, so the school might need a golf simulator. Some sports, meanwhile, will continue apace. Because Newcomb hosts a number of international students — it

» Wellness center Cont. from pg. 1 The fitness center and counseling rooms would likely be located on the second f loor of the Chester Municipal Center, which was built in the mid-1930s as the Chestertown school. “As the plans are in conceptual stages, we haven’t settled on where the wellness center would be located,” Leggett said.

The Newcomb School Board at a previous meeting to discuss the future of its sports programs. has 16 this year — it can count on fielding a varsity soccer team in the fall, but the same students might not have an equal level of interest in baseball in the spring. The split between the two schools caught Newcomb by surprise and caused some hard feelings in the community, but Hults said he hopes the friction will not last. He said

If the grant is successful, the municipal center’s present “gymatorium” would be reconfigured to accommodate both a recreation/ fitness facility as well as the present auditorium through the use of portable staging — resembling its form and function when it was a school. The town has not in the past been in a position to roll out this type of programming,

there are other academic partnerships between the two schools that will continue, and that small systems in the North Country need to stick together. “We hope to continue a good and strong relationship with Minerva,” he said. “I don’t want this to come out wrong, but at the end of the day, this is just sports.” ■

but in partnership with the YMCA it can be accomplished,” Leggett said. “The YMCA can handle the program and we have the facility and the resources,” he said, noting that the finances would be channeled through Hudson Headwaters Health Network. “We all would like to see this up and running,” Leggett said. The fitness programs would be an extension of what is already offered by the town on a smaller scale. Presently the municipal center hosts ongoing classes on yoga, tai chi, martial arts and step classes, offerings that could be extended to more participants and over additional seasons if the wellness center were established.

Also, the town is now sponsoring a pickleball program during the warm months, and with renovations to the town hall, they could continue through winter, he said. “We have a very active older community that is looking for expanded wellness programming,” Leggett said. “A town wellness center would offer many benefits for a lot of people.” To fund the wellness center, Adirondack Health Institute would be drawing on the state’s DSRIP Innovation Fund, which was established by the state to redesign Medicaid by focusing on population health and transforming ways to deliver health care. The state’s goal through the $6.4 billion fund is to reduce hospital use by 25 percent. ■

Town of Chester CEO charts course for 2019 Infrastructure key priority for coming year By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

CHESTER | Upgrading Chestertown infrastructure, making progress on upgrades to the Pottersville water system and boosting services to youth and the elderly are top priorities for the town of Chester government in 2019, Supervisor Craig Leggett has announced. In a “state of the town” speech Leggett gave at the January Chester town board meeting, Leggett announced both his objectives for the coming year as well as progress achieved this past year. After noting that a new well had been drilled at Gamble Beach to boost capacity of the Pottersville water system, Leggett announced that the town board would be working to secure more funding for further work, including finishing up the expansion of the well house. The town board intends to apply for an $800,000 state Community Development block grant to fund the replacement of 3,000 feet of deteriorated water main in Pottersville. Priorities for Chestertown include improvements to the southern business district including new sidewalks, a water main and

streetlights to enhance a strip of state Route 9 that’s been gaining more prominence commercially in recent years. Leggett also noted the board’s intentions to increase services to youth and the elderly, including establishing a new wellness outreach center at the Chester Municipal Center. Other objectives include setting aside money to replace an aging trash compactor at the town transfer station and to construct additional garage space for highway maintenance equipment. He said the town board plans to purchase a new tandem plow/dump truck and a new skid-steer loader in an ongoing effort to assure that town highway equipment provides suitable service while minimizing repair costs. “We will continue to maintain a fleet of hardworking vehicles,” Leggett said, noting that major roadways around the town and streets in the Chestertown hamlet need repair — and the town plans to pave them in 2019. Accomplishments of town government in 2018 cited by Leggett include adding ornamental planters and new landscape plantings in Pottersville as well as throughout town and installing electric service and LED lighting for the basketball court at the town park on Olmstedville Road. Achievements also include improving the heating system in the Chester Municipal Center — which included fine-tuning the new pellet boiler — and advancing town economic de-

velopment initiatives in conjunction with the North Warren Chamber of Commerce. The two most prominent projects completed in 2018 according to Leggett were shoring up the northwest wing of the Chester Health Center and converting the interior lighting in the municipal center from fluorescent to LED fi xtures. This changeover is projected to pay back its $20,000 net cost

through utility savings in merely 20 months — and from then, on save taxpayers about $5,800 per year. Highway-related achievements last year include the seal-coating about two miles of Bird Pond Road and paving several thousand feet of Blythwood Road, he said. Also, a substandard waste treatment system and associated contaminated soil was removed at the town highway garage facilities. Leggett noted that 2018 provided challenges for town employees, who had to clean up many downed trees resulting from major storms and spend considerable time clearing roadways due to heavy snowstorms. “It was a very, very difficult winter,” Leggett said. “The severe winter pushed overtime pay, fuel, sand, and salt expenses to the max.” Despite these challenges, town taxes were maintained below the tax cap, he said. Leggett said that protecting the town’s environmental resources would continue to be a top priority in 2019, noting that the milfoil control program on Loon Lake has produced impressive results in reducing the infestation of this invasive lakewater species. In addition, Leggett expressed appreciation for the service of own employees who retired in 2018: John West, Glen Redmon Jr., Walter Tennyson, Karen Griffen, and Bruce Nolin, as well as Mary Jane Dower, who served on the town Zoning Board of Appeals. ■

What’s in store for Adirondacks in state budget

Olympic upgrades, potential cuts to local governments in store By Pete DeMola EDITOR

ELIZABETHTOWN | Gov. Andrew Cuomo is going big with his executive budget proposal this year. Buoyed by Democratic majorities in the state legislature, the governor’s proposed $175 billion spending plan has garnered headlines for its blend of progressive proposals — legalizing recreational marijuana, raising the age to purchase tobacco to 21 and ushering in a raft of safeguards to protect the LGBTQ population — paired with an ever-sharpening focus on combating the Trump administration. “In the face of unprecedented challenges on a national level and a federal government at a complete standstill, New York will deliver on the most productive agenda in our history and build on our record of accomplishments,” Cuomo said. All flash aside, the proposed budget is largely business as usual for the Adirondacks.

CELL COVERAGE

As part of closing the technology and

communications gap that cobbles economic growth in the Catskills and the Adirondacks, Cuomo has proposed an “Upstate Cellular Coverage Task Force.” The group of industry experts, government officials, environmental reps and other stakeholders will be tasked with identifying solutions and developing policies addressing the lack of cellular coverage. The state launched a broadband initiative in 2015 that pledged to provide 100 percent access by the end of 2018 with the help of $500 million in state subsidies — including $154 million injected directly into the North Country — paired with private investment and federal funds. Despite early bursts of choreographed pageantry heralding the program, the deadline has quietly passed and was given scant mention in the budget book: “After full implementation of the Program, more than 99 percent of New Yorkers will have access to wired broadband,” it read. Cuomo breezed over the issue in his budget address on Tuesday: “We are going to be the first state to have high speed broadband 100 percent all across the state,” he said. State Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) noted the governor “touted our state’s 100 percent coverage.” “Here in the North Country, many still

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo delivered his 2019 State of the State Address in Albany on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Photo provided struggle to not only have basic internet services, but are even faced with the inability to place a cellular call,” said Jones in a statement. “I’ll make sure to hold the governor to his word and work to expedite these longdelayed projects. Our families and businesses need these services now.” Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Shaun Gillilland welcomed the focus on boosting cell coverage. “We need to change regulations in the (Adirondack Park) about tower heights,” he said. “It’s clearly a public safety issue.” Cuomo also wants to make the property tax cap permanent. The program has become part of the lexicon of local government, Gillilland said. But local officials are seeking clarity on the consequences of exceeding the cap, which is 2 percent or the rate of inflation. “The devil’s in the details, as it always has been,” Gillilland said. “I have not seen that language.” Local officials are also miffed that the executive budget proposal scales back the operating aid known as AIM funding to local governments from $715 million to $656 million — a $59 million reduction. The funding has for years become a “vital and reliable source” of revenue for towns that allows them to invest in much-needed infrastructure improvements and public services, said the Association of Towns, which

is calling for a full restoration. “This proposal will likely force municipalities to pierce the tax cap to cover costs associated with the services lost if this proposal becomes law,” said Gerry Geist, executive director, in a statement.

OLYMPIC IMPROVEMENTS

When it comes to tourism, the governor highlighted heavy investments in the industry, and asked for the continuation of $59 million in I LOVE NY funding to promote the state’s tourism assets. He also wants to use advertising to funnel visitors to airports upgraded as part of the state’s sweeping infrastructure program, including Plattsburgh International, which received $38 million in state assistance two years ago and is now complete. State-owned winter sports facilities in Lake Placid and North Creek stand to gain another influx of investment. Last year’s budget contained $50 million to shore up the aging facilities operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) to keep them competitive and sustain the region’s status as a global sports center and tourism destination. Key in that is attracting large sporting events like the 2023 World University Games in Lake Placid, which will ultimately drive year-round business, investment and economic sustainability for the region. » State budget Cont. on pg. 7

New rec trails envisioned for Johnsburg Amenities may feature yurts and restrooms By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

JOHNSBURG | A fully developed network of recreational back-country trails between North Creek and Thirteenth Lake may become a reality if pending plans are realized. Although Johnsburg already has 47 miles of trails, under a tentative development plan those paths would be upgraded as well as interconnected, and an additional 23 miles of pathways would be added. These trails would allow area residents and visitors to access some pristine woodlands for hiking, exploring, skiing, limited mountain bicycling and snowshoeing. These trails might include socializing yurts, warming huts, restrooms, bicycle repair stations and other amenities, according to plans unveiled Jan. 9 in an informational meeting held at the Tannery Pond Community Center. “We are working on developing a worldclass recreational experience for connecting with nature,” town of Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan said. Johnsburg was awarded a $40,750 grant to develop a detailed plan for developing the trails and amenities through the state Department of State’s Waterfront Revitalization Program. The town’s portion of the grant is $15,000, a portion which would be cred-

The Chazen Companies planning firm and Steve Ovitt of Wilderness Property Management jointly drafted the successful grant operation, and are now involved in developing the plan. Hogan said that a local trails development committee are working on the trail route and amenities along with Ovitt and Chazen personnel. “This is exciting effort exciting because it’s a community-driven concept with people who are out in the back-country every day providing input into the plans,” she said. The committee includes area residents Rick Morse, Dave Putman, Kelly Nessle, Ed Orr, Dick Carlson, Steve Tomb, Pete Gilbertson, Chris Belden and Warren County

Planner Wayne LaMothe. Many of these back-country enthusiasts spent nearly an hour offering their ideas and opinions after Chazen’s presentation of the tentative plans at the Jan. 9 meeting. “The vision of this trail network is so unique to the town of Johnsburg. It’s another arrow in our quiver of economic development,” Hogan said. After the meeting, Paul Cummings of Chazen Companies — who has skied Gore Mountain since childhood — said that an expanded trail network with new amenities would boost its appeal to a new generation of adventurers. He said that although Gore already has a robust set of trails, the new proposed trail sections designated for mountain biking would make the sport much more accessible for people of all ages and all levels of expertise. “Mountain biking has exploded, and there are few trails accommodating the sport in the Adirondacks,” he said. He added that an expanded network of ski trails would also attract a lot more back-country skiers noting that new trails would connect with existing cross-country ski descents. Cummings praised the committee members as well as Steve Ovitt, who was a forest ranger in the southern Adirondacks for 25 years, for their expertise and knowledge of area wilderness. “I’m predicting this new trail network will build on the existing local outdoor recreational culture,” Cummings said. Ovitt, who has designed four mountain bike parks in the area, said he wanted to see the development of “an exceptional modern infrastructure relevant to the backcountry scene” to meet expectations of the contemporary adventurer. “We’ll be helping the townspeople develop a vision and way forward to boost the recreation economy and support the community’s way of life,” he said. Town board member and Hudson River Trading Co. owner Laurie Arnheiter said the trail plans would boost local tourism and help sustain local businesses. “As a merchant, it’s exciting to see these new recreational opportunities being developed,” she said. “We’ve always known this was an amazing area for outdoor recreation, but it will soon be more accessible. And with professionally designed trails, we’ll give adventurers a much better experience, with amenities really attractive to the new generation of outdoor enthusiasts.” ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

The times, they are changing There are so many things observed and experienced the longer you have the opportunity to By Dan Alexander hang around this good • PUBLISHER • old earth. When you are a child or even a young adult, the more mature adults called it the “wisdom of age.” When we were young, most of us looked at that notion as a bunch of bunk. The young have time on their side to gain the wisdom earned through life. But as you grow older, you begin to realize there might be something to that wisdom stuff that those mature adults were pedaling way back when. You begin looking at things from a different perspective. You weigh life’s experiences against the realities of the day. Change and conflict seem to be all around us. It’s always been there, but when you are young, change and challenging the status quo is seen as exciting and new. When you are older and more comfortable with the structure of life, change can be unsettling and against the grain of your life’s experiences, affecting those plans and goals made when you set out on the journey of life. So where am I heading with this philosophical rant about age, change and wisdom? As I watch current events and ponder the many cultural changes taking place in the world, as well as the general unrest in many nations, one has to wonder if there is an underlying plan or if we are so blinded by competition and greed that we just throw caution to the wind and hope for the best? The drive to own more, control more, have things go your way, seem to fall in line with an entitlement world. Change has generally been seen as a positive but change, for change sake alone, may not lead us where we hope to go. In the current climate of change that we find ourselves, we can only hope wiser heads prevail, realistic compromises can be reached and most importantly, the good of the many is the primary focus rather than the good of the few. Taxes and death, as the old joke goes, are the only two constants in the world, but I fear in this new technological age, those two might have to move over and share the billing with other new constants in our lives. Only time will tell, but I fear common sense will not get on the list. ■

» State budget Cont. from pg. 4 This year’s proposal contains $70 million in capital improvements to the Olympic venues in Lake Placid and three state-owned ski areas — Whiteface and Gore mountains in the Adirondacks and Belleayre Ski Area in the Catskills — ahead of the 2023 World University Games in Lake Placid. The boost will “contribute substantially to the region’s tourism-based economic growth,” said Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism CEO James McKenna. In total, ORDA has been flagged for a total $107.1 million in proposed appropriations, including $16 million in connection with legislation that would authorize the stage agency to be able to “defend, indemnify and/or insure third parties” in connection with the 2023 World University Games, according to budget materials. The state agency will also receive $2.5 million in New York Works infrastructure capital funding from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s New York Works appropriation.

GREEN ISSUES

Cuomo has promised a “Green New Deal” that would require the state to fully phase out carbon-generated energy sources by 2040.

“This landmark initiative will further drive the growth of New York’s clean energy economy, create tens of thousands of high-quality 21st century jobs, provide all New Yorkers with cleaner air and water by reducing harmful emissions, and set an example of climate leadership for the rest of the nation and world to follow,” read the proposal. The Adirondack Council cheered the efforts. “Great to see @NYGovCuomo express a vision of New York as a national environmental leader,” wrote Adirondack Council Executive Director Willie Janeway on Twitter. Cuomo also proposed expanding the state’s bottle bill and banning single-use plastic bags, proposals that garnered praise from environmentalists. “Birds, fish, and other aquatic species mistake plastic bag litter for food ingesting this toxic debris which causes sickness or death in tens of thousands of animals,” said Adirondack Mountain Club Executive Director Neil Woodworth in a statement. “The toxins are also transferred through the food chain to larger species. Plastic bags take many years to decompose so they become persistent debris on our public lands and in our waterways.”

NO NEW RANGERS

The executive budget proposal plan calls for a

$1.8 billion appropriation for the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), up $512,217 from the 2018-19 fiscal year. The boost is largely to accommodate the first year of the $2.5 billion effort to upgrade clean drinking and wastewater infrastructure statewide, including $300 million for the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). “That’s a big one for Essex County towns because our drinking water infrastructure is aged and it’s going to need help,” Gillilland said. “Drinking water is the next wolf closest to the fi re.” Overall, spending at executive agencies has been kept flat at 0.8 percent. Not included: Funds to hire more Forest Rangers, a long-simmering issue in the Adirondacks as stakeholders grapple with the impacts of skyrocketing tourism. Scott van Laer, a union delegate for the Police Benevolent Association of New York State Law Enforcement said he was “disappointed” the proposed spending plan contained no new items. “On the positive side, things are looking good to fill vacancies in currently allocated items,” van Laer wrote on Twitter. Assemblyman Dan Stec (R-Queensbury) said he will bring up the staffing issue in a meeting

with the DEC commissioner next week. Stec, a 46er, Environmental Conservation Committee member and the son of a Forest Ranger, said he suspected the DEC’s request last month to consolidate the Environmental Conservation Police Officer and Forest Ranger titles would be a way to increase the number of rangers without actually increasing payroll costs. Staffing levels, he said, aren’t at a crisis level, but increased visitation does requires more staff. “I will continue to push for Forest Rangers,” Stec told The Sun on Wednesday. Gillilland said increased cellular coverage is all the more important if the state won’t agree to bolster their numbers. Cuomo said jockeying for more money is usual practice every year. “Everybody wants more money for everything,” Cuomo told WAMC Northeast Public Radio’s Alan Chartock on Wednesday when asked about education funding. “When you advocate for your agenda, that’s what you should do. The job of government is then balancing those needs.” ■ — This story has been abridged for print. To read this story in its entirety, visit suncommunitynews.com.

Safety equipment saves lives — or at least, feet This winter, the snows were lean until recently, and the weather cold enough, making it a great time to get in the woods and cut some trees. Hemlock is being thinned out, some By Rich Redman big enough to be sawed out for boards and the smaller trees will be used for • COLUMNIST • firewood. The small wood can be used to fire up a stove to make some maple syrup next year or for a buddie’s outdoor wood stove. Hemlock works well in those outside boilers. The hardwood logs, if sizable, will be sawed out for boards, while non-lumber logs and the small limb wood becomes firewood, to help ward off next year’s winter blasts. One day, I was cutting firewood and a guy stopped in to chat. He was wondering why I was wearing all the safety equipment. I explained, as an ex-EMT, I have seen what a saw does to human meat and bone. Nobody is tougher than a chainsaw blade humming away at high rpms. Sharp or dull, they tear through frozen wood and make chips. A person’s skin... well, they will make chips too; small bloody red ones. As an EMT, I spent a day at the hospital working with a plastic surgeon who was working on a guy’s hand who happened to run it through a table saw. Spend a day doing that, and believe me, you will

wear safety equipment and become extra careful. I wear safety equipment consisting of a hard hat style helmet with hearing protection, safety glasses, chainsaw protection chaps, leather gloves and Chippewa logger steel toe boots. Talking about boots, it’s a good thing I do. I was in a tight spot cutting limbs off a downed hemlock and nicked the toe of my boot. The toe leather got chewed up a bit, but the steel protected my foot — good thing. The boots A good steel toed boot will were expensive, but damn protect your foot from chain- well worth it. I don’t want a cloven or split hoof! saw blades. Something like that brings you back to reality very quickly. It makes you stop a moment and think! Damn that was close! It’s time to take a break, get a drink and have a sandwich. Re-

charge and rethink! Accidents happen. It’s inevitable. It only takes a second of losing focus or concentration and wham, bam, trouble. You may be tired, dehydrated, have low blood sugar, whatever. You can lose focus and become a statistic. Talk to anybody who has spent time running a saw in the woods and they will have a story to tell — maybe a good one, and maybe a bad one. Chainsaws get run over, handles snap and break, tires get punctured, oil or gas spills and clothes get torn. Then there are widow makers and dead falls to watch out for — those branches or hung up trees that can fall and put an end to your day, week or life. It happens. Some accidents are just accidents, but not wearing safety equipment when you are in the woods working is not an accident. It’s downright foolish. So, if you are out there working in the woods, on your farm cutting fence posts, whatever, be safe and wear the safety equipment. One stupid accident can ruin your day or your life! So, be careful and be safe. As far as my boot, I put some construction adhesive in the rip and went back out for another hitch, just a little more carefully though. ■ — Rich Redman is a Moriah-based outdoors writer. Remembering lost friends

Turning back the pages

By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

WINTER IS SURELY HERE

Today, as I am writing this, is Jan. 19 and old Mother Nature is giving me a hard time about braving the elements to get to the Richards Library to partake in the service of their nifty micro-film machine. It looks as if this weekend we will see enough snow so that we will all be heartedly sick of it. No 100 year old newspaper reading for me today! This year, January 2019, marks the anniversary of 38 years that I have been writing this column. Since 2003, I no longer write Neighborhood Notes, and I really miss it. This has been a cold, hard winter for nearly everyone and spring seems very far away. What ever happened to our “January thaw?” I plan on sitting home this weekend, listening to my furnace run and reading articles about global warming.

THE “GOOD OLD DAYS”

On Jan. 3, 1918 it was 40 degrees

below zero in Warrensburgh. I remember my husband, Merv Hadden telling me about a winter day when he was a teenager, probably in the early 1930’s. He said that it was 50 degrees below zero and he walked from the area of the bridge that comes into town to the River Street area. He described the world as being eerily silent and occasionally all that could be heard was a booming sound from the ice cracking in the Schroon River. On his walk, he never saw another human being nor an automobile. I bet that the squirrels were buried down deep that day. Talk about a good day to sit at home by the fire!

REMEMBERING FRIENDS GONE AWAY

Today is today and yesterday is history. This has been a very sorrowful time as I have personally have had several close friends pass away this winter. I very seldom mention current obituaries here, as everyone who passes away is important and no one should ever be omitted. Bear with me this one time as these were my personal friends.

Jane LeCount was my close and devoted buddy over nearly a lifetime when “our hearts were young and gay.” We could always find mischief to get into as her husband sat back and watched us in disbelief. Josiah died in 2017. The amount of real estate she sold over 40 years in this area at LeCount Real Estate was unbelievable as no one could resist her fair and honest demeanor and her great personality. She was the “Mother of the World’s Largest Garage Sale,” and she had good reason to be proud of it, considering its great success. She was always thinking of something new and interesting to get into. She was a dynamo. Jane was well deserving of the title, “Citizen of the year” that the chamber of commerce bestowed upon her. Jane was 91 years old when she died Dec. 3, 2018 and there will never be another one like her.

AND THEN THE MUSIC DIED

Ernie Brown and I were friends since we both escaped the rigors of being teenagers. He had a real zest for life and he loved

his family dearly. He and his wife, Anne, were married for 62 years at his death. There were few musical instruments that Ernie could not play, but the piano was his favorite. The Saturday night square dancing crowd loved him, especially when he played in the Mitch Abood band at the local dude ranches. He was a regular reader of this column and he used to call me, tell me stories and say, “Write about what happened fifty years ago because those are the days I can remember best, the days of wine and roses.” Ernest W. Brown was 84 years old when he passed away on New Year’s morning, Jan. 1, his 62nd wedding anniversary. He was a fine man.

GOODBYE FOR NOW

My computer is getting winded and I must say good-bye. I will tell more secrets next week. ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Adirondack Journal/Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

» Shutdown Cont. from pg. 1 He noted that the program’s funding was just recently extended through February, and the county’s Social Services employees had been working overtime to get all eligible SNAP recipients re-certified so they would receive those February benefits. He noted that those recertified would be receiving both their January and February benefits this month, and the recipients should realize the doubled-up payment is intended to last two months. Moore said that Warren County Social Services is now dispensing $745,358 in SNAP benefits monthly to about 3,600 households, serving approximately 6,300 individuals. Funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program — which includes child care, youth employment and cash benefits — ends as of Feb. 28, but the state will be underwriting it for the next

three months, he said. Veterans services will be funded, but some former soldiers will likely be facing a inconvenience that could be costly, Moore said. He noted that the closure of the National Archives may mean a limited ability to assist veterans and their families in obtaining military records. Veterans who need to document their military service to obtain veterans property tax exemptions — due March 1 in New York State — may face delays due to inaccessible records. The normal turnaround time for receiving such documentation is eight to 10 weeks, and the shutdown will likely not only extend that time, but create a backlog of requests, Moore warned. The WIC program, or supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, is affected by the shutdown, but the state has sufficient WIC funding reserves to keep dispensing benefits for at least another two months, Moore said.

Published by Denton Publications, Inc.

The county’s Public Works Superintendent is monitoring two sources of funding that are affected by the shutdown — the Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Highway Administration grants, Moore said. Reimbursement or approval of such grants might be delayed by a prolonged shutdown, Moore said, adding that disruption isn’t at this point anticipated as far as Warren County is concerned. But if a natural disaster occurred in the area, according to county Emergency Services Director Brian LaFlure, federal assistance with emergency logistics might not be available, and restitution might be delayed, Moore reported. “Brian LaFlure states that the National Weather Service is on a skeleton crew which could adversely affect us in the event of a natural disaster,” Moore said, adding that some online emergency management research tools are not being maintained, and

federal training programs for fire, emergency medical services are being postponed. Moore said that if the shutdown continues, it could reduce Warren County’s sales tax revenue, which bankrolls about one-third of the county’s budget. He noted that an extended shutdown could reduce the national Gross Domestic Product by $1.2 billion, dampening the U.S. economy. Each week subtracts 0.13 percent from economic activity just due to inactive or furloughed federal workers, and the percentage is likely to be far higher considering idle government contractors and the postponed or cancelled government contracts, economists have estimated. According to the Council of Economic Advisors, a prolonged shutdown could not only slow down economic activity, but push the economy into a state of contraction, according to reports — which could substantially reduce Warren County’s sales tax and occupancy tax revenues, local officials have warned. ■

How to overcome workout boredom For those instances when boredom is difficult to overcome, men and women who want to stay in shape can try these strategies.

E

ven the most ardent fitness enthusiasts sometimes lack the motivation to exercise. Various factors, including boredom with a fitness regimen, can affect one’s motivation to hit the gym. Boredom with a workout can sometimes be overcome by an especially effective workout. But for those instances when boredom is difficult to overcome, men and women who want to stay in shape can try these strategies. JOIN A SPORTS LEAGUE. A workout doesn’t have to be limited to the weight room or the cardiovascular area of your local gym. If your motivation to workout is waning, consider joining a competitive sports league. Many fitness facilities even offer adults sports leagues on their premises or at nearby parks for outdoor sports. Sports such as racquetball, soccer and boxing or mixed martial arts provide great exercise and opportunities to meet other fitness-minded people. If games or competitions only take place once or twice a week, be sure to supplement your participation with more tradi-

tional workouts on off days.

TAKE ALONG YOUR TABLET. Many fitness facilities now include WiFi internet access with the cost of a membership. People bored with their workouts can take advantage of this perk and take their tablets with them to the gym, watching a favorite television show or movie while burning calories during the cardiovascular portions of their workouts. This gives people bored with their fitness regimens something to look forward to, and the chance to catch up with a popular show might be all the motivation people need to get off the couch and exercise. PERIODICALLY CHANGE YOUR REGIMEN. It’s easy to get bored with a workout if you’re always doing the same repetitive exercises. Speak with a personal trainer at your gym and ask for some advice on how to switch things up and still meet your fitness goals. There’s more than one way to get fit, and periodically changing your exercise regimen can be a great way to shake things up and reinvigorate your

Simple ways to look and feel your best experts say that people put their hands in their pockets when they are uncomfortable or unsure of themselves. Keeping one’s hands free can project more confidence in all they do.

At the dawn of a new year, many people resolve to reach for new heights. On the path to personal growth or improvement, one may find that making a few adjustments can greatly increase confidence and satisfaction.

The adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” can inspire people to look beyond the outer shell to what lies beneath. However, how a person presents himself or herself undeniably has an impact on how this person is perceived. Therefore, individuals can make small changes that improve how they look and feel about themselves. This, in turn, may make people more self-assured.

WCS wrestlers win Granville Duals Burghers’ regular season ends 26-4 By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

GRANVILLE | Warrensburg closed out their regular season Jan. 19 by defeating five other teams to win the Granville Duals tournament. Warrensburg beat Northern Adirondack by a score of 50-33, defeated AuSable Valley 53-32, crushed LaSalle 78-5, dominated Mechanicville-Stillwater 75-12, then edged out Granville 45-42 in the finals. Winning all five matches in the duals meet were sophomore Robert Ranous at 99 pounds, freshman Dylan Winchell at 113 pounds, freshman Tanner McKenna at 120 pounds, senior Zack Davis at 138 pounds, senior Chris Wilson at 220 pounds, and junior Jacob Clear at 215 pounds. Burgher coach Mark Trapasso said that in the last match of the day, Clear had a very competitive battle against one of Granville’s top wrestlers, Jon Hermance, and Clear managed an 8-2 decision to secure the win for the Burghers. “Jacob wrestled really tough,” Trapasso said.

Burgher wrestler Zach Shambo puts up a fight during a match in the Granville Duals meet, which Warrensburg-Bolton won by defeating five other teams. Shambo, a junior, won three of his five matches in the meet. Photo by Kim McKenna Wrestling 4-1 for the duals meet was 8th grader Tristen Hitchcock at 182 pounds. Winning three of their five matches were junior Zachary Shambo at 132 pounds, and freshman Aiden Rushia at 195 pounds.

The tournament win was accomplished with four of the Burghers sidelined due to illness or prior injury: 8th grader Landian Templeton at 106 pounds; sophomore Zachary Carpenter at 126 who is 22-6 for 2018-19; sophomore Hunter McKenna (24-1) at 145 pounds; and senior Nolan McNeil (17-1) at 195 pounds. The finals against Granville featured pins by Burghers Tanner McKenna, Zack Davis and Chris Wilson, as well as Joe Murdick at 170 pounds. Robert Ranous, Dante Corriveau and Dylan Winchell were all credited with forfeits at 99, 113 and 120 pounds respectively. With the duals meet victory, Warrensburg concluded their regular season with a 26-4 win-loss record. Trapasso said he was pleased with the 2018-19 campaign. “We weren’t blowing out teams like we did last year, but we won four tournaments and came in second in two others,” he said. “Our athletes worked really hard and the results show it.” The Burghers compete Saturday, Jan. 26 in the New York State Team Tournament, representing Section II Division 2 — then a week later compete in the Section II Class D tournament, where a number of Burgher wrestlers are expected to win their weight classes, Trapasso said. “Our big goal all year has been to win the Section II Class D team championship, and we have a good chance of achieving it,” he said. ■

Area basketball teams tally late-season victories By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARREN COUNTY | Several basketball teams in northern Warren County defeated rival squads this week, advancing their 2018-19 campaigns as winter sports’ regulation season approaches its conclusion. On Jan. 18, the North Warren boys basketball team defeated Hadley-Luzerne 68 to 56, advancing their 2018-19 record to 8-4 in the Adirondack League, 9-6 overall. In defeating the Eagles, the Cougars exhibited the savvy playmaking and team chemistry that has given their squad considerable momentum in recent weeks. In this game, the Cougars had offensive production across their roster. Sophomore 5’6” guard Anthony Girard was top scorer with 25 points which included two 3-pointers, Jay Hopper followed with 16 points; Caleb Morehouse and Tanner Dunkley each scored 8 points, Jack Buckman tallied 6 points and Reece Bradley chipped in 5. Both Morrehouse and Bradley tallied 9 rebounds each. On Jan. 12, North Warren defeated Salem 70-61, powered by an offensive tirade lead by Girard, who scored a career-high 38 points, which included two treys and 14 from the foul line. Three days earlier, the Cougars beat Whitehall 62-52 with Girard scoring 23 points, followed by Tanner Dunkley’s 22 and Reece Bradley’s 9. On Jan 4, North Warren outlasted Fort Edward by a score of 66 to 51 in the league game which shifted North Warren into a

Junior guard Reece Bradley followed with 16 points and 6’3” sophomore center Tanner Dunkley contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. Caleb Morehouse, Wyatt Gereau, Jay Hopper, Jack Buckman, Nate Hopper and Ryan Miller also contributed to the score. The game’s momentum shifted in the last half: North Warren established their lead with a 26-6 third-quarter scoring spree, and the Forts answered back with a 21-13 fourth-quarter effort.

LAKE GEORGE BOYS ADVANCE UNDEFEATED STREAK

The Lake George boys basketball team, reigning state champions, continued their dominance of Adirondack League play Jan. 18 by defeating Warrensburg 75-33. With the victory, Lake George advanced to 11-0 in the Adirondack League and 13-0 overall. Top scorer for the Warriors was 6’6” senior center Chris Becker with 30 points and 10 rebounds, followed by senior forward Mason Flatley with 14 points and nine rebounds, and senior guard Connor Vidnansky with 12 points. Burghers qualify for NYS team tournament STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | For the second consecutive year, Warrensburg-Bolton has earned a berth in the New York state wrestling team championship tournament. To qualify for the event, to be held Jan. 26 at Onondaga Community College, the Warrensburg-Bolton wrestling team won the Section II Division 2 qualifier meet held Jan. 15 in their own gym. In this four-team qualifier among the top four schools in Section II, the Burghers beat Whitehall-Fort Ann 48-27 then defeated Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George 46-39. “It was quite the night for us,” Burgher coach Mark Trapasso said of the qualifier. “We are thrilled. It’s an honor to go to the state team tournament, no doubt about it.” The finals was a close match between the Burghers and the WarEagles — one that could have gone either way, Trapasso said. The WarEagles were particularly strong in

the middle heavyweight classes. Starting off the finals, Burgher junior Zach Shambo pinned WarEagle freshman Brandon Lamby in 23 seconds at 132 pounds, then Zach’s teammate senior Zack Davis won a major decision over WarEagle junior Mike Fuss by a score of 13-3 at 138 pounds. Then the WarEagles had six consecutive wins, five of them by fall: At 145 pounds, senior Gary Spotswood pinned Burgher senior Michael Dougherty in 59 seconds; at 152 pounds, senior Logan Duers pinned freshman Thomas Combs in 16 seconds; sophomore Justin Hoffman pinned freshman Hunter Nemec in 1:43 at 160 pounds; junior Colby Hoolihan decisioned junior Joseph Murdick 10-4 at 170 pounds; senior Cody York pinned eighth grader Tristen Hitchcock in 1:12 at 182 pounds; and junior Cameron Duers pinned freshman Ayden Rushia in 39 seconds at 195 pounds. Warrensburg answered back by winning six of the final seven matches to win the close matchup. Senior Nolan McNeil pinned senior Neil Galvin in 1:41 at 220 pounds; senior Chris Wilson was credited a forfeit at 285 pounds;

sophomore Robert Ranous got a forfeit at 99 pounds, WarEagle 7th grader Gavin McCabe pinned Burgher 8th grader Landian Templeton in 1:23 at 106 pounds; and Burgher freshman Dylan Winchell pinned freshman Carter Mcintosh in 1:14 at 113 pounds. The final two matches were critical in the Burghers winning the opportunity to compete at Onondaga. Freshman Tanner McKenna pinned WarEagle freshman Caleb Carpenter in 26 seconds at 120 pounds, and sophomore Zach Carpenter won by injury default over WarEagle freshman Quinton Fox at 126 pounds. “I knew it would be very close. The WarEagles are a very talented team and they matched up well with us,” Trapasso said. “We were just fortunate to come out on top.” The long-standing Burgher coach added that every wrestler on his team contributed to the win. “Several kids stayed off their backs for six minutes to minimize the loss of points,” he said. “Every single match was important.” Trapasso noted that he had moved wrestlers around between weight classes in order to win as many matches as possible.

With his teammates and coaches yelling encouragement and instructions from the sidelines, Burgher wrestler Joe Murdick attempts to pin Whitehall-Fort Ann’s Jacob Gosselin, who resists the move with a neck bridge. The match was one of 14 in the semifinal round of the state qualifier tournament Jan. 15. Photo by Kim McKenna

“Several of our wrestlers put their winloss record aside for the benefit of our team,” he said. WarWagles coach Larry Rounds also said the meet was very competitive, noting that Quinton Fox had been winning 3-0 until he was injured. In the semifinals of the qualifier meet, the Burghers defeated Whitehall-Fort Ann 48-27. In this matchup, Warrensburg-Bolton wrestlers pinning their opponents were Zach Carpenter, Zach Shambo, Zack Davis, Tristen Hitchcock, Chris Wilson Jacob Clear, Landian Templeton, and Dylan Winchell. Robert Ranous was credited with a forfeit at 99 pounds. Trapasso said that by winning the state qualifier, his wrestlers achieved one of their season’s top goals, and that he was happy that his 2018-19 squad would have the experience of a lifetime to wrestle in the state tourney. “It’s quite an honor and no one can ever take it away from them,” he said. “The experience will inspire our wrestlers to work off-season to get back there again.” ■

WarEagles likely to finish off best season ever

By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

LAKE LUZERNE | The Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George wrestling team accomplished two key wins this week as their regular season approached its conclusion. The WarEagles defeated Watervliet in the semifinals of the Section II Division 2 qualifier for the New York State Team Tournament — before losing to Warrensburg in the finals — then merely one day later, they edged out Whitehall-Fort Ann 40-39. Rounds said he was pleased about the wins because Watervliet was ranked No. 2 in Section II, and Whitehall-Fort Ann was ranked No. 4. The win against the Railroaders was decided by the last match, when Justin Hoffman pinned Chad Aratare in 5:16 at 160 pounds. “With our team needing a pin from Justin, it was a pressure match,” WarEagles coach Larry Rounds said, noting that Hoffman, a sophomore, had initially been losing 2-0 before pinning his opponent. “Justin showed a lot of poise tonight.”

Also noteworthy in the WarEagles meet with WhitehallFort Ann was the match won by WarEagle junior Colby Hoolihan, who beat Jacob Gosselin at 170 pounds, despite Gosselin pinning him several weeks earlier. “Every wrestler of ours contributed this week,” Rounds said. After Hoolihan won the initial match at 170 pounds, senior Cody York, unbeaten for 2018-19, pinned his opponent at 182 pounds. Also earning falls were Cameron Duers with a pin in 31 seconds at 220 pounds, Gavin McCabe at 106 pounds, and Logan Duers at 152 pounds. WarEagle William Mitcham won a 3-1 decision at 285 pounds, and Mike Fuss won a 15-5 decision at 138 pounds. Next up for the WarEagles is a meet versus MechanicvilleStillwater on Jan. 23, followed by the Ken Baker Classic tournament at Salem-Cambridge on Saturday Jan. 26. Rounds predicted that as of Saturday, the WarEagles will have completed their best record ever. “This season, we’ll likely have the most wins in the history of our program,” he said. ■
