Residents evading 2020 census count could cost county $20 million WARREN COUNT Y | Not getting every Warren County resident to participate in the federal 2020 Census this year could mean the loss of many millions of federal dollars, crimping local government services, county leaders said recently. County officials have estimated that if merely 650 county resident aren’t documented in the census, a reduction of nearly $20 million

in funding for vital local governmental services is likely to occur over the next decade. The reduced funding would curtail the 55 or so federal programs for which allocations are calculated on the census’ population data, they said. In New York, programs tied to census information represent about $73 billion in federal funding. See CENSUS » pg. 3

No, I consider myself fortunate,” Stimpson responded, gazing at his girlfriend Tanya Scoville who was standing beside him. “This is a special place for us,” he said, noting that four years ago, he met Scoville when his daughter worked at the Cumberland Farms store — where he bought his winning Jackpot ticket about a month ago. Stimpson, until recently a Walmart product assembler, walked into the Bay Street Cumberland Farms Jan. 2 and redeemed a $20 win on a scratchoff Lottery ticket, then bought two more and returned to his car.

Brant Lake Winter Carnival set for Feb. 15
Lake George Winter Carnival’s week 2 offers family fun
All-afternoon event By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
BRANT LAKE | One of northern Warren County’s most anticipated winter events — Brant Lake Winter Carnival — is to occur next weekend, offering a variety of activities for all ages. Held primarily on top of the lake, from noon to 6:45 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 15, the carnival will feature human foosball competitions, a frying pan toss contest, ice bowling, hockey shoot-offs, curling contests, a broomball tournament, plus a vintage snowmobile display and parade. The activities will conclude with fireworks over the lake, beginning at approximately 6:15 p.m. The carnival is to be held at Jimbo’s on the Point off Route 8 in Horicon, a few miles northeast of the Brant Lake hamlet. Featuring fierce-but-friendly competition plus $1,000 in prize money, the crowd-pleasing annual outhouse races are to be held on the lake ice beginning at 4 p.m. Also a crowd favorite is the frying pan toss contests, which are divided into age groups and gender. Youngsters are welcome to participate in the competition, in which people attempt to throw frying pans the farthest. For the youngest competitors, miniature frying pans are used.

This year’s edition of the popular four-weekend event resumes this Saturday and Sunday featuring an ATV Poker Run, a barbecue cookoff, bonfires by the beach, a dog talent show, and a karaoke contest — as well as an array of children’s activities. In past years, more than 100 people of all ages have participated in the contests, while 150 people or more have watched. In addition to the above events, the carnival hosts ice skating and a children’s sledding hill, event publicist Cindy Mead said. “We’re offering a wide variety of activities that are sure to keep all family members entertained — and the carnival is free of charge,” she said. Mead noted that unlike larger lakes, Brant Lake is frozen solid, and all events will likely be held without any problems of slush or thawing. Weather forecasts earlier this week called for ideal winter temperatures, Mead said. “It’s our intention to get people on the lake to enjoy outdoor activities and socialize,” she said. One element of the carnival’s popularity is that people can take a break from the outdoor events and step into Jimbo’s Club to warm up, enjoy food and

beverages and socialize. Also, many of the spectators enjoy viewing the carnival activities from Jimbo’s lengthy outdoor deck. The schedule calls for most activities to be held from noon to 3 p.m. The foosball playoffs start at 1:30 p.m. and the vintage snowmobile parade is to be held at 3:30 p.m. In addition to cash prizes, the outhouse race winners receive a handcrafted bird house that is fashioned after a vintage outhouse. Traditionally, various teams donate their winnings to a local charity — and they take home bragging rights instead. Teams of five people can register for the outhouse race for a $25 fee by contacting Mead at cmead3@nycap.rr.com or register at the lake on race day, from noon to 1 p.m., which is the deadline for the outhouses to be on the lake. The races begin at 4 p.m, and an awards ceremony is to be held at 5:30 p.m.

The local Boy Scout troop will be grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers during the event. The Brant Lake Winter Carnival has been quite popular since it was founded in 2013 by the Tri-Lakes Business Alliance, which sponsors a variety of events in northern Warren County. The carnival is supported in part by occupancy tax revenue grants from the Town of Horicon and the town of Chester. “Both participants and spectators have a fun time at our carnival,” Mead said. ■

Sitting in his vehicle, Stimpson scratched off several numbers on one of the new tickets, and they matched, indicating he won $2.5 million. “I thought, this can’t be real,” he recalled Jan. 29. “I sat there and got emotional — I didn’t think it was really happening. I’ve been playing scratch-offs for a long time and I’ve gotten the lower end of the winnings, but never anything big — This was a real big surprise.” “Here, is this for real?” Stimpson asked as he handed Scoville the ticket, he recalled. Tanya said she confirmed the big win. “I answered, ‘Yes, you actually won the jackpot’ — He was like crying and I was in shock — Then I said, ‘Well, I’ve got to go to work.’” Stimpson then drove Scoville to Glens Falls Hospital where she works as a nurse in the intensive care unit. Soon after, he proceeded to the Lottery headquarters in Schenectady where he redeemed his ticket, choosing the

These programs include federal housing, transportation and highways, lunch programs, food stamps or SNAP, meal and nutrition programs, Medicare and Medicaid, county officials said this week. For months, a 2020 Complete Census Count Committee — a coalition of local human service agencies — has been meeting to organize an outreach to county residents with a goal of counting every single person who lives in the county for a minimum of six months per year. The group was founded by the Warren County Planning Department. County planner Sara Frankenfeld, who discussed fi nances for this outreach effort with area officials last week, said that rural residents, renters, minorities, the elderly and children ages zero to 5 years old are historically under-counted. “About $800 billion of federal funding is distributed nationally on the basis of census data, so not getting a full count cheats us out of money — a huge amount of money,” she said. “Getting everybody in Warren County counted is so very important.” State officials have said that accurately enumerating people in rural areas has traditionally been difficult due to many of the residents’ distrust in government. Frankenfeld has said that in the 2010 census process, only about a third of the residents of northern Warren County towns responded to cards mailed to them requesting their participation — a response rate far lower than metropolitan areas.
SHIFT IN STATE GRANT POLICIES STALLS PLANS
Several weeks ago, county officials planned on allocating $100,000 to the Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS) to conduct the local outreach effort to optimize the census count, following the state’s offer to contribute $75,000 in state funds toward the project if the county matched the sum with $25,000 — and the county Board of Supervisors committed their share on Jan. 17. But late last week, county officials were informed that the state funding was not available if SALS conducted the outreach, as they were a 501C1 non-profit entity, instead of a

up-front payment of $1,572,012. Jan. 29, Stimpson said that with his winnings, he plans to pay off debt and help out the four children the couple shares. “We want to give them a boost; give them more reliable transportation,” he said. Stimpson added that he planned on replacing his 1999 Jeep Cherokee which has a non-functioning heater — with a new truck, as well as purchase a Jeep for Tanya, and likely buy a house. After his big win, Stimpson continued to work for a while at WalMart assembling bicycles, grills and furniture and other products — until the news of his Lottery winnings spread. Stimpson said he’s now considering getting back into the handyman business, an enterprise of his years ago. But first, Stimpson said, he and Scoville will be taking a cross-country road trip, perhaps in an RV camper. “We’d like to go from national park to national park, spend a few months at it,” he said, adding that they will likely be stopping at flea markets and antique stores along the way.
501C3 organization — an apparent about-face from prior advice from the state. Frankenfeld said the news was distressing, because libraries are where people traditionally go to receive guidance from trained staffers on filling out census surveys. “Finding out SALS is now disqualified has thrown a wrench into our plans,” she said.
Asked whether she felt fortunate, Scoville said she did, but it wasn’t about the money, it was about her life with Stimpson, her family, and good health. “I’ve worked hard all my life and for many years raised my kids as a single parent,” she said. “It was really great running into Jody — we have a lot of things in common, and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.” Stimpson reflected on his good fortune. “I believe that things happen for a reason, and things usually work out for the best,” he said. Cumberland Farms clerk Sierra Dray watched the couple holding the oversized check. Four weeks earlier, Stimpson had bought the ticket from her. “He’s a regular here, he comes in here nearly every day buying scratch-offs and coffee — He’s a really good guy,” she said, describing him as friendly and humble. “It’s so good to know that someone who deserves it got the jackpot,” Dray said. ■
outreach program. “They had nine years to get this all ready, and now we’re down to the eleventh hour,” he said.
“We may lose a lot of money by not getting this program in place — I want this to go on record. You cannot make this stuff up; this is wrong.” ■
PROCESS TO SECURE GRANT IS COMPLEX
Additionally, Warren County Administrator Ryan Moore explained to county officials on Jan. 30 that getting the funding would require a lot of work: the census outreach program plans would have to be submitted to the state, the lead agency would have to be certified for the effort, plus a project budget would have to be negotiated and approved by the state before they would commit to the $75,000 grant. Moore said that undertaking this process might be difficult due to the limited time available, and that the state’s guidelines might continue to change. Plans call for census cards to be mailed out in March, followed by census workers going house-to-house this summer to obtain information from those households that didn’t return the cards. Also, Moore reported that while state officials had said weeks ago that census outreach program expenses incurred beginning Jan. 1, 2020 would be eligible for reimbursement, their policy had changed to disallow any expenses incurred before an award letter was approved by the state.
At a recent Warren County meeting, county planner Sara Frankenfeld (center) told area leaders that up to $20 million in federal grant funding was at risk if the 2020 Census is merely one percent shy of a full, accurate count. CONGRATULATIONS!
STATE MANDATES CURTAIL EFFORT
Considering these requirements, there might not be enough time to comply with the mandated process, Moore said, noting he talked to a representative of the state’s Special Projects office, and he expressed dismay that the time frame was indeed tight. In response, county supervisors endorsed amending their allocation of $25,000, removing the stipulation that it was conditional on state grant funding. Several supervisors have suggested that the county spend up to $100,000 or more to assure a full count, and avoid the potential loss of millions of dollars in federal funding. Queensbury at-large supervisor Brad Magowan expressed his frustration about the state’s handling of the grants bankrolling the

Videos add positive slant on local businesses
Photos courtesy of ROOST
By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER
TUPPER LAKE | Tupper Lake has recently experienced a resurgence of business growth due to both an influx of newcomers to the area as well as established businesses revamping their businesses.
With the idea of keeping that trend on the upswing, the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (better known as “ROOST”) is in the process of creating a series of ten videos, the first two of which are now online and ready for viewing. “Quality of Life in Tupper Lake” interviews local business owners, who speak of the benefits of living in the Adirondacks; the second, “Starting a Business in Tupper Lake,” briefly reviews
the fellowship that exists between Tupper Lake businesses. Tupper Lake Village mayor, Paul Maroun, recently said, “These videos highlight everything we have to offer. Our business owners share in their own words what they love about living and working in the Adirondacks, and their passion will undoubtedly encourage more people to set up shop in Tupper Lake.” Town Supervisor Patti Littlefield agrees. “Tupper Lake is a growing, bustling place, and the economic development videos do an excellent job of showing that it’s a great place to open a business.” These videos were produced by Paul Frederick Productions and ROOST under a grant from the New York Department of State. ROOST is also offering these videos for viewing to areas outside the area via social media platforms in their ongoing campaign to elicit more interest in Tupper Lake. View these videos by visiting tupperlake.com/economic-development. Tupper Lake is offering help for those interested in starting a business in or relocating to Tupper Lake. Contact Director of Community Development Melissa McManus at tupperlakecommunitydevelopment@gmail.com for more information or ROOST’s Katie Stuart at katie@roostadk.com or 518-359-3328. ■
Buses will ferry hikers
Summer shuttle operated by Essex County By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
ELIZABETHTOWN | Fewer hikers might wind up parking in the yards of Keene Valley residents because of a planned shuttle system that will bus hikers from Marcy Field to all popular Route 73 trailheads. The plan was announced last month by the Essex County Board of Supervisors, who will administer the operation as part of their existing transit system. The state Department of Environmental Services will pay $1.2 million for the purchase of four, 24-passenger buses and the cost of operation, including eight drivers, said Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Shaun Gillilland. The buses will operate 16 hours a day and pass every popular trailhead every 30 minutes. “We don’t want to make it a weak-sister
program,” he said. “If it says ‘’Essex County’ on the side of the bus, we want it to be robust.” The long hours of operation are a key, he said, because many hikers don’t emerge from the trails until late in the day. “It will provide service long enough that we won’t be leaving hikers in the woods,” Gillilland said. As use of High Peaks trails has increased, trailhead parking lots have spilled over and hikers have increasingly parked along the side of the road, in private neighborhoods and even on private property. Last summer the state prohibited roadside parking along four miles of Rt. 73, which caused some problems of its own. It increased the pressure on private neighborhoods, and caused hikers to park further away on Rt. 73 from the restricted parking area. That meant they would walk along the road for two miles or more just to get to a trailhead — an unsafe situation for hikers and motorists alike. The new bus routes will circulate from Marcy Field east to the loopy intersection of Routes 73 and 9, and west to the Olympic sports complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. As it stands now. the service will be free. It will run daily from the time school is out in the

summer through Labor Day, and then on weekends in the fall. Keene Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson said the town will continue to run a shuttle from Marcy Field to The Garden, a High Peaks trailhead with limited parking above Keene Valley. Wilson said the new shuttles will bring some organization to an increasingly chaotic situation. “I’m glad to see the state jumping in with substantial support,” he said. “And Essex County has the experience to run a smooth, effective operation.”
••
GATEWAY WINE &LIQUOR
While waiting on the shuttles, hikers will be greeted by trail ambassadors known as frontcountry stewards, who will help them with route planning and make sure that they are properly equipped for the day they have planned. The town has also talked conceptually about a visitor center at Marcy Field, and optimizing and potentially expanding the existing parking lot. But Marcy Field is scenic in its own right, and Wilson said it will be up to the Keene townspeople to decide how many cars the area can accommodate without adversely affecting the view. ■

Newcomb offers fun winter weekends By Laurel Carroll
Clarkson names dean’s list students

STAFF WRITER
NEWCOMB | Cross-country skiers and snowshoers are invited to take advantage of Great Camp Santanoni’s next Winter Weekends event, taking place on Presidents’ Day weekend, Feb. 15-17. The 9.8-mile round trip will allow participants to visit the Gate Lodge and Main Lodge of Camp Santanoni, view displays about the Great Camp, and benefit from interpretive tours conducted by Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) volunteers. The Gate Lodge trail extends to the remote lakeside Main Lodge area and requires moderate physical activity. Newcomb’s Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) will also be on hand at the Gate Lodge to lend snowshoes at no charge to anyone who needs them. Bring your own mug and warm up on free coffee, tea or hot chocolate at the Artist’s Studio, a log and stone building next to the Main Lodge on the shores of Newcomb Lake. This event coincides with the worldwide Great Backyard Bird Count. AIC staff will have binoculars at the ready to loan to interested birders. During the half-mile trek from Camp Santanoni to AIC, experienced birdwatchers will be alert to any winter birds in the area and share what they know about the diversity of Adirondack birds. On Saturday, Feb. 15, at

Update: Supporting community journalism
Wood Warmth By Rich Redman COLUMNIST
After a day of felling trees, cutting up logs, splitting and stacking firewood, you have earned quality snooze time. Crawling into a warm bed in a cold room allows sleep to take you away, but before you know it, five thirty comes and it’s another day. As I make my way downstairs, I try to be quiet while others sleep. I pour a cup of yesterday’s coffee in a cup and fire up the microwave. While the invisible energy heats my coffee, I make a fresh pot we enjoy later. Down into the cellar I go, with book and coffee cup in hand. The woodstove needs food. It’s been burning calories all night long. The house has cooled down by the winter’s winds outside, so I do my morning chores. I shovel out the old packed ash and pull the coals to the front of the stove, evening out the pile. Most mornings there are enough remnant coals that no kindling is needed. You just add more wood. The morning fire is made with smaller diameter wood, so the

In the past two months since launching our Support for Community Journalism, we’ve heard from 289 readers and they have contributed $9,940 to date. In this week’s paper, you’ll find an updated list of those who have responded to our request for support in the past month. Our ongoing goal was to obtain approximately 3% to 5% reader voluntary support to assist in maintaining or growing the Sun’s coverage. If you haven’t contributed yet, please consider doing so. We plan to maintain the program going forward, so there will always be the opportunity to jump in with financial support whenever you find it convenient. Running parallel to a financial contribution is an effort encouraging readers to, at the bare minimum, sign up for free delivery of the paper. We are stepping up this process during the next few weeks as we will be purchasing a new mailing list and converting it to barcode addressing of the paper for the U.S. Postal Service. In this way, we can earn a slight discount on our weekly mailing cost. But, and there is a big but, we want to make certain your address is on the new list. If you don’t want to be inconvenienced by taking the chance that you could fall off our mailing list, please sign up online or send in the form you’ll find in this week’s papers under the heading, important notice. Shortly, when you visit our website, you’ll find reminders showing up with each story and an easy way to contribute online. And speaking of online, you will also be seeing a revamped Sun and Vermont Eagle website popping up soon as we add a host of new features designed to keep you up to date on community news, sports, events and breaking news. Once that project is completed and running smoothly, we’ll be launching a Sun mobile App for both Apple and Android. The new technology driving the web site will provide automation for our Content Management System that will simultaneously assist the reporting and design staff in sending stories and pictures to both the website as well as the print edition without an extra manual step. Currently, we “build” the paper then go through a completely separate step to post stories to the website. All these steps are part of planning for the future, making certain we are well equipped to meet the demands of the region while at the same time doing so in an efficient manner. As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the paper or these ongoing enhancements. ■
Acquires gas stations, delivery system By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER
ELIZABETHTOWN |Stewart’s Shops officials announced the purchase of family-owned gasoline and diesel distribution company, Polsinello Fuels, along with five gas stations. The transaction will allow Stewart’s to distribute Sunoco, Citgo and Mobil gasoline to dealers between the Capital Region and Massena, according to a Stewart’s company news announcement. Based in Saratoga, the locally owned dairy production, grocer and gas station company did not disclose the amount of the private transaction. “As we continue to grow our business, this acquisition gives us the opportunity to diversify by expanding $

deeper into the fuel wholesale business,” Stewart’s Shops President Gary Dake said in the release. The Sun asked Stewart’s if expanded distribution would affect gas pricing in the region or serve to equalize priceper-gallon costs found at the many Stewart’s Shops gas stations between Plattsburgh, Elizabethtown, Lake Placid and Lake George. “At Stewart’s Shops, our priority is to keep our pricing fair and competitive for our customers,” spokeswoman Erica Komoroske told the Sun. “Gas prices are dependent on many factors including market trends and distribution costs. The newly acquired fuel distribution business is separate from our gas distribution to our shops and will allow Stewart’s to supply Sunoco, Citgo and Mobil gasoline to other locations outside of Stewart’s.” Based in Rensselaer, family-owned Polsinello Fuels was founded in 1952 as an oil burner service. The trees were felled, the logs winched out with my tractor to the header, cut into bite size pieces, then split and triangulated with a six-pound maul. Then, stacked in my tractor bucket, taken to the woodshed and stacked again, last winter, so I can restack it back into my tractor bucket and take it to the house this winter. I slide the wooden triangles down a chute into the cellar and once again restack it against the cellar wall. Four or five times daily, I then stack it in the wood stove, where it finally becomes my energy to heat the house. This happens every day, all winter long. It’s a fool’s trial by repetition for sure. I drink my coffee and feel the heat while I read a chapter out of my book. Yeah, I could just let the stove do its thing while I go back upstairs but sitting by the stove and reading is now a morning ritual. I earned the right to sit by that stove and bake. It’s not the first heat that wood has given me. Some people can’t wait for summer to sit around their campfire. I have my boxed in one every winter’s morning. The day will come when I won’t do this anymore. I’ll just flip a switch for instant heat. It will never be the same, though. Sitting next to a hot air furnace and listening to the fan churn away while trying to read? No thanks! ■

stove gets roaring. You need quick, hot heat to clean out the chimney. As the fire starts to build, the stove starts its song. It creaks and crackles away as the steel heats and expands. You can change the pitch of the song by opening and closing the stove door. Air controls the fire and the song. I like to keep the door vents half open, so the draft is really sucking air into the stove. It gets the wood roaring. The vents draw air in and as the wood devours oxygen, the demand causes the fire to puff like an old steam engine. The puffing sound is the stove inhaling and exhaling. I open the stove door and the rush of air in allows the wood to take off. The roar in the stove and chimney pipe tell me things are getting clean in the chimney exhaust tail pipe. Keep the pipes clean. If in doubt get a certified chimney sweep to check things out. You gotta keep the pipes clean to prevent a chimney fire. While all this pyrolysis and air exchange is happening, I sit by the stove and bake my right side until its done. The hot air from the stove feels so damn good. Wood warmth is the best. I gaze at the wood stacked in the cellar; two face cords worth, plus there are fifteen others out in the woodshed. It’s a good feeling knowing the trees came from our woodlot.

HONOR WELL DESERVED
COLUMNIST
HAPPY DAYS
I would like to wish my good friend, Hannah “Delila” Walter, a wonderful lady who has seen 105 years of Thurman history and has much, over these many years, done such a great deal to contribute to it all, a very happy birthday. Delila was born in Thurman, in a great blizzard, on Jan. 31, 1915, on the Glen Athol Road. Over the years she has had the pleasure of knowing personally, first hand, wonderful people in our area history that I have only been able to read about. The last time I had the privilege of visiting with her, she was at the Warren Center convalescent home, in Queensbury, the center of attention in her wheelchair, telling great stories of “good old bygone days.” Birthday cheer, old friend!
LITTLE BOY GONE
Russell Martin Fish, age two years and eight months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Fish, of Chestertown, died on Wednesday,
The new town hall at Newcomb was dedicated on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26, 1960, to the memory of Ernest D. Rist who had served the town since 1920 in various offices, the last 18 years as supervisor until his death early this winter. Warrensburg News editor Bob Hall suggested that an Adirondack mountain peak be given the Rist name “to honor Ernie in perpetuity” and state officers have been initiated to see if this can be done. The peak in consideration is now known as East River Mountain or North River Mountain and has no given name on the map. Newspaper columnist Bill Roden has been promoting the idea that this honor should to be bestowed. Lilburn Yondon was named supervisor to take Ernie’s place.
COMMUNITY LEADER DECEASED
Walter W. Janser, 80, of Chestertown, pharmacist and civic leader, died on Thursday, Feb. 25, 1960, following a brief illness.
Thought for the day

STONY CREEK MAN PASSES AWAY
Bordon Van Dusen, 67, a life long resident of Stony Creek died suddenly on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1960, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Watson Winslow in Stony Creek. For many years Mr. Van Dusen was a foreman for the Warren County Highway Department. Burial was in the Warrensburg Cemetery.

Gas and groceries in Newcomb Newcomb Cafe & Campground offers new services By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
NEWCOMB | Jimmy Schaeffer was passing through Newcomb when the gas lamp on his dashboard lit up, indicating he was low on fuel. Mile after mile went by with nary a pump in sight. Growing concerned, he asked where the nearest filling station was, and got the bad news that it was another 15 miles to the next convenience store. “I think I coasted down the hill into Long Lake,” he said. No more. Now, Newcomb not only has its own gas pump, it has a grocery, camp store and diner, in a location just east of the Central School on Rt. 28N. Owners Schaeffer and Troy Ford, who migrating up from the cities, said they were looking forward to filling a need in Newcomb. “We came up here and never went home,” Ford said. “We liked the area, but we were too young to retire, so we needed something to do.” Ford owned a 10,000-square-foot antique center in Newburgh, and Schaeffer was an IT project manager in New York City. They bought land in Crown Point for their horses, and began hunting around for a business to run, and saw a For Sale sign on a sorry looking campground store that had been abandoned five years prior.
“It was better than some of the businesses they looked at,” said Ford’s mother Jen, without a lot of conviction. Outfitted in their motorhome, Jen and her husband Gary were, about this time, supposed to be sitting under a palm tree somewhere, but they agreed to come north and help run the 34-site campground that came with the property. “We drove by and saw the sign — we didn’t want some hundred-person restaurant, we wanted something cozy,” Schaeffer said. “We stopped in Town Hall and (Supervisor Robin DeLoria) told us the history of the place, and we fell in love with it.” DeLoria said the town was also able to help with a $100,000 grant in revitalization money that the state provided to help towns economically in the wake of the Finch Pruyne land purchase that closed thousands of acres to potential development. DeLoria said the renovation has been done the right way, with energy efficient insulation and windows, accessible bathrooms and a generator that will keep things operational if the power goes out. Town Board Member Paul LaCourse said the town’s last gas and grocery were lost when the camp store closed more than five years ago. Just having the basics back in town is a big deal for local residents. “People are always asking, when is the cafe going to open?” he said. Officially opening Jan. 20, the Newcomb Cafe and Campground will be open for breakfast and lunch, with Ford in charge of the kitchen. “He’s a good cook, I can vouch for that,” Schaeffer said. Ford said many of his recipes, including those for desserts

and buttermilk pancakes, hail from Pennsylvania Dutch country, and were handed down from his grandmother, who penned the ingredients on cards, including the person’s name from whom they derived. Along with the dining room, the renovations included an outside deck for warm weather. Ford said the campground includes two luxury cottages and will be open for transient and seasonal campers. The camp store will include basic groceries and, in time, Adirondack-made products. Ford and Schaeffer said the response from the community has been heartwarming, with people stopping by to wish them luck. Starting with the first order of buttermilk pancakes, they hope to return the favor. ■

WarEagles eye tourney success
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE LUZERNE | The Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles split two dual meets last week as they finished off their regular 20192020 season. On Jan. 29, they defeated MechanicvilleStillwater, 36-29. They started off 10 points behind, as Hunter DeMarsh and Mystic Potts were pinned at 285 and 99 pounds respectively. However, local fans were pleased to see Potts, a first-year wrestler, battle at least into the second round. Next up for the WarEagles was Grace York, who was credited with a forfeit at 106 pounds. Through the lighter weight classes, matches were back and fortf, but the WarEagles prevailed soon after with Carter McIntosh pinning Lane LaFountain in 3:09 at 120 pounds and Gavin McCabe pinning Jack Osterhout in 2:08 at 126 pounds. After losing two matches in the middle weights, the WarEagles dominated. Dustin Lashway won a 7-3 decision over Aaron McClements at 145 pounds; Brayden Mahon pinned James Doty in 1:28 at 152 pounds, then All-Star WarEagle Justin Hoffman pinned Maxwell Woodward in 1:20 at 160 pounds. Concluding the meet was seasoned contender Mike Fuss winning a 7-1 decision over Shawn Farrell at 170 pounds to secure the WarEagles’ victory. Neither team put forth wrestlers at the 182-, 195- and 220-pound weight classes. The next day, the WarEagles lost 26-47 to Amsterdam High School, which has twice the
enrollment of Hadley-Luzerne High and Lake George High School combined. The score would have been far closer if it weren’t for the WarEagles’ lack of wrestlers in the upper weight classes, which cost them three forfeits, again at 182, 195 and 220 pounds. “The flu hit us terribly,” coach Jeremy Duers said, on Feb. 2 of the past week’s games and practices, noting that he canceled the WarEagles’ berth in the Wasaren League tournament Feb. 1 because only one of his wrestlers was healthy. High points in the Amsterdam meet for the WarEagles were Hoffman pinning Andrew Mickel in 2:34 at 160 pounds; Fuss earning a 6-3 decision against Eladio Montalvo at 170 pounds, Grace York being credited with a forfeit at 106 pounds; Mike Springer getting a forfeit at 138 pounds, and Aiden Price pinning Ryan Reagan at 138 pounds. The WarEagles are now heading into the Section II Class C tournament to be held all day on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Tamarac High in Cropseyville, New York. Duers said his wrestlers were now healthy and ready to compete in the post-season. “Our veterans — Justin Hoffman, Mike Fuss, Colby Hoolihan and Cameron Duers — are all wrestling in top form,” he said. “They are performing exceptionally, on and off the mat.” He also noted that the younger wrestlers would perform well in the Class C tournament. “They are improving every day,” he said. “Overall, we expect to make a lot of noise in Tamarac next week.” ■
Times of these events and other details are posted online at: LakeGeorgeWinterCarnival.com. “We provide a wide variety of activities for people of all ages, offering them the opportunity to get outdoors and really enjoy winter,” carnival official Lou Tokos said. ■

Girls teams move to post-season Burgher twins share success By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | The twin sisters on Warrensburg’s girls basketball team represented double-trouble to opponents this week, as senior forwards Aubrey and Abigail Ranous led the Burghers to two Adirondack League victories.
Lake George stando u t a t hl e te A v a Pushor drives to the basket earlier this season in a game a g ains t Co r in t h . Pushor is leading her team by averaging 14.7 points and 10 rebounds per game.
State-ranked Cougars advance with three league wins
with 15 points — including a three-point shot; senior Jodi Bartlett followed with 11 points, which included two from past the arc; junior Kaitlyn Kramar with 12 points, featuring one trey; plus senior Lauren Monroe with 7 points and Tia Buttino with two. Three days earlier, Warrensburg defeated arch-rival Lake George by a score of 64-23, a score that would have been far closer if junior forward Mikayla Duff y had been on the night’s roster. Again, the Ranous twins were lead scorers for their team. Abigail scored 22 points and tallied 8 rebounds, while Aubrey scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds. They were followed by Frazier with 8 points and sophomore guard Abby Cheney with 3 points. Langworthy hit one field goal and Jordan Barker sank a foul shot. Tyrell brought down 14 rebounds and Boland tallied 8 assists. For Lake George, senior power forward Ava Pushor was top scorer with 15 points and 12 rebounds, followed by sophomore point guard Brenna Metivier.Sophomore forward Emma Abrantes tallied 2 points and 5 rebounds; senior guard Gabby Marchello added two points, plus freshman forward Aimee Ehmann and senior guard Casey Burbo chipped in one point each. Marchello and Pushor each accomplished three steals, while freshman Alivia Dean had two and Burbo had one. Both teams’ coaches gave their younger players substantial game-time in this Adirondack League contest, after which Warrensburg’s junior varsity defeated their Lake George counterparts.

WARREN COUNT Y | Regaining their early season momentum, the North Warren Boys Basketball team defeated three Adirondack League rivals in five days last week, improving their 2019-20 record to 14-2. With a deep roster of talented athletes and strong teamwork, the Cougars are ranked 7th of all Class D boys basketball teams in New York State. North Warren defeated Whitehall 81-64 on Jan 27 in a comeback victory, then beat Argyle 76-62 on Jan. 29 and crushed Warrensburg 71-27 on Jan. 31. The Cougars’ winning streak followed two losses last month — attributed in part to players sidelined by the flu — to Class C schools Lake George and Granville. Against Whitehall, the Cougars were behind 16-19 after the fi rst eight minutes, but scored 65 points in the next quarters to the Railroaders’45 to recover. Junior point guard Anthony Girard, known as a cagey and versatile sharp-shooter from all over the court, led the team with 28 points. Beefy junior center Tanner Dunkley, renowned for dominating inside play, scored 18 points. Six more Cougar guards contributed the win: senior Nate Hopper scored 11 points, while seniors Ryan Miller, Reece Bradley and James Steen each scored 4 points. Junior Jack Jennings added three points and senior Wyatt Gereau chipped in two points. Dwight Foulks was top scorer for Whitehall with 23 points. Against Argyle, ranked No. 18 among Class D schools in the state, the Cougars collaborated in containing Peyton Lufk in, who is the Girard of the Scots team. Jennings was in charge of that duty, working with teammates to contain the top Scot scorer to 25 points. North Warren outscored Argyle in each quarter, but the point tally was close at times. Argyle got as close as four points early in the 4th quarter, but North Warren dominated over the next six minutes to secure the win.
REGULAR SEASON’S END IS HERE
In the Burghers’ 72-47 defeat of North Warren on Jan. 31, Aubrey Ranous propelled her late-season surge to new heights, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while her sister — who’s been a leading scorer all season — had 20 points and nine rebounds. The Cougars’ close defense on Abigail prompted her to sink five foul shots as well as a three-pointer. Burgher coach Scott Smith said that beyond the Ranous twins’ ability to anticipate each others’ moves, there are other factors in their recent dual success. “The last several games, opponents are focusing on taking out point guard Hope Boland — but because her court vision and passing is so good, she’ll penetrate and find Aubrey wide open for layups,” he said. “Aubrey is doing a nice job on both ends of the floor: she’s so fast, she can outlet it to a guard and run to the other end of the court and make a quick layup. Abigail has been consistent all season, and a lot of her scoring comes from her speed and athleticism.” Against North Warren, Boland, a senior, scored 16 points, featuring two treys as well as 6 assists; senior forward/ center Tenisha Tyrell scored 6 points and 10 rebounds; junior guard Sara Langworthy tallied four points and four assists; sophomore forward Olivia Frazier hit a three-point shot; and sophomore forward Audrey Steves contributed a field goal. For North Warren, sophomore Nicole Buckman led her team Photo by Jenn March
After their Feb. 4 game against Salem, Warrensburg has one game left — a showdown on Friday, Feb. 7, at home against Whitehall. As of Jan. 28, Warrensburg, — now with a 14-3 season — was ranked No. 25 in the state in Class C, and that ranking was determined before they had won three games in a row. Also, Bolton Central, 13-1 as of Jan. 30, was ranked No. 11 in the state for Class D. Coming up for the Warriors — after a game against Granville on Feb. 4, is a showdown with Hadley-Luzerne on Feb. 7, which ends their 2019-2020 regular season schedule.
LOCAL SCORING LEADERS LISTED
According to statistics compiled by Pete Tobey of the Post-Star, Abigail Ranous was ranked the No. 7 top scorer in 2019-2020 basketball for area schools of all sizes with her 17.1 points average per game, Boland was No. 21 with 12.1 points per game and Aubrey Ranous was No. 23 with 10.9 points per game. Tied for 10th place were Kate VanAuken of Bolton and Kate Wimberly of Johnsburg-Minerva with 14.7 points average per game.
COUGARS HOLD OFF SCOTS IN FIRST HALF
On Jan. 28, North Warren lost a suspenseful game as Argyle overcame the Cougars’ 22-18 first-half advantage. The Scots rebounded from their slow start, finishing the second half 37-21 to win the league game. Paige Cormie and Bryanne Mattison each scored 22 points for the Scots. Cormie’s tally included 3 three-pointers. For North Warren, Kaitlyn Kramar was top scorer for the Cougars with 14 points — including three treys; followed by Buckman with 12 points; Monroe with 6 points; Bartlett with 5; plus Holly Perry and Dani Kersey with 3 points each. After a game against Whitehall on Feb. 4, North Warren will have their last regular-season games of the year — versus Salem on Friday, Feb. 7, then against Saratoga Catholic on Monday, Feb. 10. ■

Effective on offense and defense, Girard scored 32 points — including three, three-pointers — followed by Dunkley with 18 points. Steen scored nine points, while Miller and Hopper scored 5 each. Jennings contributed four points, and Gereau hit a key three-pointer mid-game that shifted the momentum back to the Cougars. Against Warrensburg, Girard and Dunkley distributed the ball freely to their teammates, all whom scored. Girard was tops with 19 points, followed by Miller and Steen with 12 points each, Hopper with 10, and Dunkley with nine. Jennings contributed five points and sophomore forward Andrew Beadnell added four. For the Burghers — who played without lead scorer Dan Cunniffe — top scorer was senior forward Max Richards with nine points, followed by junior guard Chippy Mason with eight points. Eighth grader Brady Cheney and senior guard-forward Mike Tyrell added three points each. Junior forward Thomas O’Sullivan and rookie Evan LaPell each chipped in two points. After a rematch Feb. 5 versus Whitehall, Next up for North Warren is a game on Friday, Feb. 7, against Salem.Post-season play begins later this month.
LAKE GEORGE WINS DESPITE ABSENT PLAYERS
The Lake George Warriors won two game this past week; the latest one was a considerable achievement. They defeated Corinth in a dramatic 51-50 comeback victory after trailing 12-21 in the first quarter and enduring a seven-point deficit in the third quarter. Two days earlier, the Warriors defeated Warrensburg 58-31. Adding an exclamation point to the Warriors’ efforts
North Warren All-Star junior point guard Anthony Girard drives past Argyle defenders in a game Jan 29. Girard was game-high scorer in the Cougars’ 76-62 over the state-ranked Scots. As of Jan. 29, the Cougars were ranked in seventh place of all Class D schools in New York. Photo by Jenn March was the fact that they achieved the wins against Corinth and Warrensburg with their top scorers and leading defenders sidelined due to illness.
Lake George circumvented Corinth’s tough defense by shooting from afar, the Warriors shot no less than 10 threepointers. With his teammates absent, sophomore shooting guard Julius Moffitt stepped up and scored the game-high 20 points, followed by senior guard Juan Garcia who tallied 14 points and 4 assists — this duo shot four three-pointers each. Junior guard/forward Cole Clarke added 11 points including 2 treys — plus four assists, while senior guard Hunter Rounds, junior center/forward Torin Davies and senior forward Shane Clarke contributed 2 points each. Shane Clarke pulled down 10 rebounds while brother Cole grabbed 8 and Davies tallied six. Colin Watkins led Corinth with 17 points. Against Warrensburg, Cole Clarke was top scorer with 23 points, plus seven rebounds and three assists; followed by Garcia who scored 17 points. Shane Clarke contributed 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, Moffit scored four points; while Davies, Rounds, junior guard Jordan Edwards and senior forward Owen Sutton each scored two points. Rounds tallied five rebounds while Edwards contributed two assists. For Warrensburg, high scorer was Mason with 14 points — featuring four three-pointers — plus eight rebounds, Tyrell with seven points and five rebounds; eighth-grade guard Steve Schloss with six points and four assists; Cheney added three points, and sophomore forward Thomas Sesselmen sank a foul shot. Max Richards pulled down three rebounds. Lake George is ranked second in the Adirondack League’s Division I alongside Hadley-Luzerne, but both these teams have an opportunity to knock off Division leader Granville which has lost one less game. After a game against Granville on Feb. 5, Lake George is to play Hadley-Luzerne on Friday, Feb. 7, and the Adirondack League tournament finals are to be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Queensbury High School. ■

Burghers seeking fifth Class D crown By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | Heading into the Section II Class D wrestling tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8, Warrensburg wrestlers are seeking to take home their fifth straight team championship trophy. Coach Mark Trapasso said Sunday his team is practicing hard for the day-long tournament, and has a good chance of winning the title. “We should be at full strength for the tournament — With talent scattered across our roster, we could have a half-dozen athletes scoring in the top four of their respective weight classes,” he said, citing his team’s depth. “We expect to have a few more horses than any other team.” In preparation for the post-season tournaments, the Burghers’ schedule featured a dual meet Jan. 28 with evertough Queensbury, a Class B school with more than seven times Warrensburg’s enrollment. The Burghers didn’t back
off the challenge — they only forfeited one weight class. Winning for Warrensburg were Tristen Hitchcock with a 9-1 major decision over Seth Guay at 195 pounds; Zachary Olden with a 9-7 decision over Brayden Stattuck at 99 pounds; and Landian Templeton, who pinned Troi James in 5:28 at 113 pounds. Other Burghers prevailing were Zachary Carpenter with a 7-2 decision over Robert Rathbun at 138 pounds, and Hunter McKenna with a 21-5 technical fall over Ryan Lapann in 5:21 at 152 pounds. Seasoned Burgher wrestler and football star Dylan Winchell lost a close 12-8 decision to Kaiden Laluna at 126 pounds. The Burghers closed out their 2019-2020 season last week with a 24-3 record, which includes mid-season tournaments. Trapasso said he’s been urging his wrestlers to recognize that their recent Adirondack League Championship was a notable accomplishment, and so were their four consecutive Class D crowns. “I told my wrestlers that if they take these titles for granted, they’ll be looking over their shoulders and someone will be passing them up,” he said. ■

Charging into Seth Guay of Queensbury, Warrensburg freshman Tristen Hitchcock executes a diving takedown which turned Guay onto his back for one of several near-pins during a meet between the Burghers and Spartans on Jan. 28. Guay resisted a pin, but was defeated by Hitchcock in a 9-1 major decision. With Hitchcock compiling a 33-4 record so far this season, Burgher fans anticipate that he will go far in post-season tournaments.
