As winter sets in, environmental groups keep road salt in spotlight Mounting evidence reveals private wells at risk from runoff By Pete DeMola EDITOR

STATE-FUNDED BROADBAND BUILD-OUTS MAKING PROGRESS — BUT FOR LAWMAKERS, ANXIETY LINGERS

LAKE GEORGE | As storms bear down in the Adirondacks and plows prowl the streets, local advocacy groups are keeping a spotlight on the effects of road salt. Stakeholders are coming to a gradual consensus on the impacts of sodium chloride on the environment, where high concentrations can be damaging to aquatic life. But emerging data is revealing salt leaching into groundwater and contaminating private wells is presenting a risk to public health.

More than 7 million tons of road salt have been deposited on Adirondack roads over the past 35 years, according to the Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) at Paul Smith’s College. Application is highest on state roads, and much of it ultimately ends up in groundwater due to the thin and porous local soil.

» BLWC Cont. from pg. 1 “Each year, it’s our intent to make it really interactive for people of all ages to do stuff rather than just being a spectator,” she said. “And it’s free of charge to participate or be a spectator.” The carnival is held atop Brant Lake behind Jimbo’s Club off Route 8 in Horicon. In addition to the above events, the carnival hosts ice skating, a children’s sledding hill, fireworks at dusk and a vintage snowmobile display. This year, a featured attraction is free horse-drawn carriage rides provided by Sarah Boggia and her enterprise, Adirondack Carriages in Chestertown. One of the key reasons for the carnival’s popularity is that people can take a break from the outdoor activities and step into Jimbo’s Club — just steps away — to warm up, enjoy food or a beverage and socialize indoors. Many spectators enjoy viewing the many activities from Jimbo’s wide outdoor deck. The outhouse races, held annually in memory of Davin Berg, feature a $1,000 in cash prizes, and the victorious teams often donate their winnings to a charity for which the Carnival is raising money. Also, the winners receive a handmade wooden outhouse crafted by Mountain Hardware in Chestertown.

During the outhouse races held at the 2018 Brant Lake Winter Carnival the ‘Just An Accident’ team sponsored by Scott Remington and his friends attempts to overtake a competing crew as they propel their outhouse toward the finish line. This year’s edition of the Brant Lake Winter Carnival is to be held Saturday Feb. 16 from noon to 6:30 p.m. Photo by Brandon Himoff

Teams of five people can register for the race for a $25 fee by contacting Med at mead3@nycap.rr.com or calling

(518) 494-3016 prior to Feb. 16. On race day, outhouses must be on the lake by 1 p.m., three hours before the race which begins at 4 p.m. Vintage snowmobiles can register at the carnival. Another crowd favorite is the frying pan toss, which is divided into age groups and gender. Youngsters are welcome to participate in the contest in which people attempt to throw frying pans the farthest. For the youngest competitors, miniature frying pans are used. Winners in each division receive commemorative plaques created with real steel frying pans. In recent years, more than 100 people of all ages annually have participated in the contest, while 150 people or more have watched, Mead estimated. Ice bowling is another sport at the carnival in which youngsters, teens and adults annually enjoy. The local Boy Scout troop will be grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers during the event, which extends from noon until dusk. The Brant Lake Winter Carnival was embraced by the community in its 2013 debut, and it has grown in popularity since then. This free event was founded by the Tri-Lakes Business Alliance, which has launched a variety of events in the northern Warren County and tackled projects that have enriched community life. The Carnival is supported in part by occupancy tax revenue allocations from Town of Horicon and the Town of Chester. ■

» Road salt Cont. from pg. 1 AWI recently tested 358 wells in the Adirondack Park. The subsequent report revealed 55 percent of the wells tested that receive runoff from state roads exceeded state Department of Health guidance of 20 milligrams per liter. That’s compared to 10 percent for wells downslope from local roadways, which constitute the majority of the roads in the Adirondack Park, and whose highway departments largely rely on a sand-salt mixture to treat surfaces. None of the wells receiving no road runoff exceeded this value. Recent studies from the Cary Institute in Dutchess County and a Virginia Tech survey in Town of Orleans found similar results, noted the Ausable River Association (ASRA), who pointed at the research in a recent blog post. Brendan Wiltse, the group’s stewardship director, said there is a “significant need” to better understand how road salt affects groundwater quality and the public health impacts. “It’s not just environmental,” Wiltse said. “It’s hitting the water people are drinking.” Excessive sodium intake increases the risk of heart failure, kidney disease and strokes, according to the American Heart Association. People on low sodium diets for health reasons are advised to limit intake to 500 mg per day. “If you drink two liters of water, you’re getting 1,500 milligrams of sodium,” Wiltse told The Sun. Wiltse pointed at the Virginia Tech study, which revealed 82 percent of the wells in the Orleans, a town located 20 miles north of Watertown, exceeded sodium guidance levels. The culprit is likely groundwater contamination from a state-owned salt storage barn, he said. Researchers said 35,000 private wells may be impacted by salt storage facilities statewide, and 460,000 wells from general application, he said. That’s about 26 percent of private wells in

New York state.

INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS

Despite the mounting data, private wells largely exist in a gray area in New York state because they’re not required to be monitored, said Wiltse, which means homeowners may be unaware of potential issues. “This will disproportionately impact lowincome rural communities that do not have access to public water supplies and the protections that come along with them,” Wiltse wrote in a blog post. Despite local governments relying on a sand-salt mix, they still own massive stockpiles, many of which are stored outdoors without protection from the elements, including impermeable flooring. Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Shaun Gillilland acknowledged the condition of town-owned storage facilities varies across the county, and many are in need of replacement. “This is a big problem identified throughout the North Country,” Gillilland said. Oftentimes, state grants are the only way to fund new facilities. But that money is drying up, he said. “We really definitely have to get a firm grip into salt intrusion and infusion into groundwater,” said Gillilland, noting it’s a national problem. Clinton County is also grappling with infrastructure improvements. The county’s health department in 2017 provided formal letters to the state supporting the construction of new storage facilities in Ausable, Black Brook, Saranac, and the town and village of Dannemora. The Town of Beekmantown recently completed construction of a new state-funded structure — but not before the prolonged exposure of their municipal stockpile resulted in the well contamination of at least 10 homeowners. “This is a problem,” said Beekmantown

The AJ/NE Sun | February 9, 2019 • 3

Supervisor Sam Dyer. “Not just here in New York, but all over the northeast.” In addition to the health risks, salt at levels above 250 ppm also destroy household appliances, pipes, faucets and hot water heaters. “It builds up and it corrodes,” Dyer said. At present, affected homeowners are relying on bottled water. As a long-term solution, the town aims to drill wells and secure a permanent alternative source of clean potable water. But in the interim, local officials are working with Beekmantown Central School to provide a temporary source. The Town of Saranac has run into similar issues along Route 3 in Moffitsville, while residents of Ledgers Corners in Dannemora have tied contamination to a shed on Route 374 where salt had been stored outdoors and uncovered for years. The state took over that facility from the county in 1994. The wells in the area were found to be “significantly contaminated,” according to the county health department, who cited a 2012 investigation conducted by outside consultants.

STATE PILOT PROGRAMS

As a growing field of evidence emerges, the state is taking action. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) launched two pilot programs this winter to study methods of reducing salt use along Mirror Lake and Lake George, two of the most popular lakes in the Adirondacks. Road safety, said the agency, is their highest priority, and “salt has proven to be one of the most effective ways in maintaining a safe highway for the traveling public.” But as part of the experimental effort, the state agency will track and monitor application rates along Route 86 between Lake Placid and Wilmington and Route 9N in the Lake George watershed during storms. DOT will also deploy “live-edge” plow blades, which have proven to be more effec-

tive in removal of snow and ice; pre-treat roads with brine ahead of storms, and identify areas for targeted summer maintenance, cutting back trees to allow the sun melt snow and ice naturally. The findings could potentially have an impact on snow and ice practices statewide. “At the close of the season, a review will be performed to determine the effectiveness of the pilots, including on safety, and to consider the feasibility of expanding the salt reduction practice,” said the DOT in a statement. At the same time, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is developing a monitoring plan to assess the program’s impact on ground and surface water in the stretch from Lake Placid to Whiteface Mountain.

WORK GROUPS

As the efforts unfold, outside groups and local municipalities are evaluating the program’s effectiveness. Strategic work group stakeholders include the ASRA, AWI, AdkAction and the Fund for Lake George-Lake George Waterkeeper, who are independently conducting their own round of well-testing (the nonprofit also underwrote the AWI research). “We’re just shy of 500 wells tested in the Adirondacks,” said AdkAction Executive Director Brittany Christenson. Eric Siy, executive director of the FUND for Lake George, credited the DOT for the pilot program. “The motivation is clearly there,” Siy said. “They understand the impacts to groundwater and to ecosystems.” But the agency has declined to stake out a formal position on the connection between salt use and contaminated wells. “As this is subject to pending litigation, we cannot comment further,” said Joe Morrissey, an agency spokesman. ■ — This story has been abridged for print. Essex County forms task force to monitor developments By Pete DeMola EDITOR

NORTH CREEK | Local residents are beginning to see the fruits of state-funded broadband expansion efforts. Slic Network Solutions has completed the “vast majority” of their network construction in Keene aside from small portions delayed by road conditions. The provider is replacing approximately 22 miles of legacy coax plant with fiber and upgrading the backbone of their newly-obtained Keene location. “Barring more disruptive storms, we expect

to complete the network construction in the next couple of weeks and to begin installations by the end of this month,” Slic CEO Kevin Lynch told The Sun on Monday. The provider stands to wire communities across Essex (Chesterfield, Elizabethtown, Essex, Lewis, North Hudson, Schroon, Ticonderoga, Willsboro) and Clinton counties, including the Town of Plattsburgh, Altona, Dannemora, Ellenburg and Saranac, as part of the next phase. Those projects are in the engineering phase, said Lynch, which involves collecting utility pole data for the facilitation of the “make-ready” process — or securing space for fiber — and the interconnection with existing networks. “We have multiple crews from various engineering organizations coupled with internal resources gathering information along 400-plus miles of rights of way throughout these counties,” Lynch said. “Once the designs are finalized and approved, construction will begin and we will be working all out to complete these projects within the established timeframes.”

Slic also recently completed the purchase of Gore Mountain Cable, which will be “integrated and upgraded” with their Warren County grant funds, which will provide service to Johnsburg, Stony Creek, Thurman and Warrensburg. By leveraging the grant, approximately 600 additional homes in Johnsburg and North Creek may have access to fiber-to-the-home, said Lynch, and will “tangentially benefit” the state’s universal broadband initiative.

under the program,” a Verizon spokesman told The Sun on Monday. “We’ll be making announcements as communities open for business and will be glad to share news at that time.” Roughly half of the unserved homes statewide will be served by satellite provider HughesNet, which received $3.2 million for local projects. A representative didn’t return an email seeking comment. But a company spokesperson said last November “final approvals are complete on package, plans, pricing and systems to validate eligible addresses.” The state Broadband Program Office (BPO) is overseeing all build-outs and said satellite service will be launched in the first quarter, or before March 31. The BPO will subsidize installation costs for satellite dishes. Hughes will hold costs to $49 per unit. Other participating providers are required to set a monthly price ceiling of $60 for service for the next five years. » Broadband Cont. on pg. 5

POLICE BLOTTER

QUEENSBURY | Two individuals from Queensbury were arrested by Warren County Sheriffs for allegedly physically abusing a child in addition to denying food and proper medical care. Amanda M. Hand, 36, and Steven E. Ray, 38, were arrested following an investigation involving the continued abuse and neglect of a 13-year-old child. Each were charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor and arraigned in Queensbury Town Court on Jan. 30. It was determined between sheriff’s office investigators working with Child Protective Services caseworkers that on multiple occasions dating back to approximately January 2017, a 13-year-old child under the care of Hand and Ray was allegedly subjected

THE FINAL TWO PERCENT

The state initially set the end of 2018 as a goal for the program’s conclusion, and said the “vast majority” of the phases announced in 2016 and 2017 met the completion deadline and residents are now connecting online. “Based on network construction completed by the end of 2018, approximately 98 percent of locations currently have access to broadband,” a BPO spokesman told The Sun. “Some project verifications are still ongoing.” The agency has allowed providers who received funding last year to apply for oneyear waivers demonstrating cause. Delays can be caused by make-ready issues with poles, storm damage and other factors. Despite the sunny statewide progress report, local officials have come to a consensus that they represent the final 2 percent. Local non-profit AdkAction volunteered last fall to serve as conduit between local governments and state officials. Broadband Committee Chairman Dave Wolff hailed the scope of the state’s commitment: $670 million paired with $170 million in federal funds. “The state has done a great job of investing in high speed broadband access,” he said. “The governor’s goal of getting 100 percent of New Yorkers to have access to high speed broadband is wonderful.” Lewis Supervisor Jim Monty wants more precise information detailing build-outs at the neighborhood evel. “We need an updated map of who’s going where and what areas aren’t being serviced,” Monty said. Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan is

keeping a close eye on coverage areas, including last-mile homes that may be difficult to reach despite their neighbors being included in a grant package. “If even 5 percent (are left out), that’s not all New Yorkers,” Hogan said in November. Wolff is working with local officials to identify any households that may have been overlooked. “It’s very possible, through no fault of anyone, that some households may fall through the cracks and not be included in either the New York state or Spectrum build-out programs,” said Wolff, referring to a commitment by Charter to build out its network to 145,000 locations as part of their 2016 merger agreement with Time Warner.

CHARTER QUESTION

The state Public Service Commission (PSC) contends Charter, now doing business as Charter-Spectrum, failed to live up to the deal and evicted the provider from the state last summer. Negotiations are ongoing. The provider last Friday filed for an additional 30-day deadline extension which would delay submission of their six-month exit plan to April 3. They also requested a rehearing of the original eviction order. The original deal stipulated those 145,000 units would be located in rural, remote areas like the Adirondacks. And since those units were not included in the state program, local officials are on tenterhooks. “We still have not gotten any info from Charter-Spectrum on where the 145,000 upgrades are supposed to be,” said Monty. Per the merger agreement, the BPO is prohibited from putting the Charter-Spec-

trum buildout on publicly available maps, according to the agency. But local officials can request information pertaining to their area if they agree to keep it confidential. While Charter-Spectrum has argued they have expanded their networks, Wolff said their technique has been problematic. “Even in rural parts of the state, they ought to be doing rollouts at the edges of their current network,” he said. “They shouldn’t be adding people inside their network and calling it victory.” Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Shaun Gillilland said the county will need to enlist technical experts if localities will be required to conduct mapping efforts to determine if locations have been left out. “But we have to know what the situation is on the ground,” he said. “First, we have to probe the technical ability to make it happen. Then we need to speak with private providers to see what information they’re willing to give up.”

ficials continue to harbor lingering concerns over transparency and communication. “It seems that everything on broadband has gone deep and dark,” Gillilland said. “You hear less and less from (BPO).” BPO says they understand the desire for granular buildout information for local officials to keep their constituents updated, and that their office “works with town supervisors to generate current maps of broadband coverage in their towns and villages on request, in addition to the multitude of mapping tools available on the BPO website.” Officials also continue to contend satellite doesn’t constitute broadband, and want to explore if the U.S. Census blocks awarded to HughesNet can be flipped to fiber providers. DeLoria pointed at the soft data cap and throttled service implemented by HughesNet and said he’s negotiating with providers to try to get fiber extended to last-mile homes at Tahawus Lower Works, a three-mile build into some of the state’s most remote terrain. State officials have said they’ve tried to utilize fiber whenever possible. But in order to unlock federal grant funding, including $18.5 million that ultimately went to Verizon, participation from satellite providers was required in the program. Lawmakers are also eager to learn about possible opportunities at the federal level, including the $600 million in funding for rural broadband included in the Farm Bill. Projects that propose to deliver “higher-capacity connections” to rural homes, businesses and farms will be prioritized for loans and grants as part of the ReConnect Program. ■ — This story has been abridged for print. TASK FORCE FORMED

Essex County formally designated a task force in November to pin down outstanding questions, as well as ascertain the post build-out accountability structure once the state agency begins to wind down operations. “We’re going to start meeting on a regular basis,” Monty said. Joining Monty and Gillilland on the task force is Essex Supervisor Ron Jackson, Ticonderoga Supervisor Joe Giordano, Keene Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson and Newcomb Supervisor Robin DeLoria. Several community members have also been appointed. Despite a series of state-coordinated hearings and public meetings designed to smooth over wrinkles in their relationship, local of-

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Service on the southern border

We are all a product of our life experiences. Growing up in western Pennsylvania and attending high school, By Dan Alexander one of my best friends • PUBLISHER • and I served as offensive linemen on the school’s football team. He was the left guard, and I was the right guard. We worked as a team to create a sound barrier to protect our team’s quarterback and generate openings for our runningbacks to pass safely through. After high school, we went our separate ways — Doug to the Airforce and me to college. After fulling his service commitment, he joined the border patrol while I went on to enter a career in business. Over the years, we would reconnect from time to time at reunions or when returning home to visit family. It was during those times I would learn what it was like living in a border town and serving as a border patrolman and later as a sergeant. Doug met his wife Robin in the Airforce and together began their family in Texas, but as the family grew, he and his wife decided to relocate the family in Pennsylvania while he stayed on the job in Texas. It was hard to understand, from my perspective, why he would choose to live so far away from his family and would question him on how it could be that dangerous on the U.S. side of the border. His reason was a simple one. Nearly every day he would deal with drugs, death and violence — all of which would spill over to the U.S. side. He valued his role on the border. Doug’s sense of duty to the service and his fellow border guards was an essential part of who he is and the responsibilities he values. Doug served on the southern border for nearly 20 years before transferring up to the northern border in Massena for another five or so years before retiring. We all know someone like Doug, who dedicates their life in service to their country. When we understand the sacrifices they make to perform their jobs, it is hard to reconcile foolish political bragging rights when what they ask for — to keep them, their families and all of us safe — seems so reasonable. Recalling those horrific tales, Doug would share it’s hard to imagine why we haven’t resolved the issues on the border long before now. As the two sides fight it out, I sincerely hope they can put aside the need to score a political win and think instead about respecting the value of lives saved on both sides of the border. ■

Abortion law is slippery slope to infanticide

To the Editor: It’s hard to find the words to describe the shame and sadness that comes with being a New Yorker after the passing of legislation that allows for the abortion of a baby until the day of his or hers birth. The argument concerning the beginning of life at conception is behind us. We now celebrate the taking of a life of a recognizable, developed unborn child, possibly a child fully capable of surviving outside the womb. Yes, let’s paint the town pink. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican, a Trump hater or lover, this is plain barbarism. No logical thinking human being, even in the name of a woman’s freedom of choice, can believe otherwise. We are not given the right or choice to kill. Oh, there are those who will argue that only in extreme cases where the mother’s life is endangered will this be done, but the law’s language allows for a much greater latitude than this. Who is to make the decision regarding who lives or dies? These are dangerous waters, a slippery slope towards infanticide. The circumstances that lead to the choice of an abortion are often complex, wrought with pain and difficulty, loneliness and shame. How can anyone who hasn’t been there understand? A pregnancy totally changes

To the Editor: I would like to comment on the article (“Towns angry over suit,” Feb. 2 edition) that the towns were angry over a lawsuit filed by two environmental groups intended to prevent the state from building a 140-foot bridge. If the towns are angry, it is themselves they should be angry with for not relying on experience of those who have gone before. They should have been prepared for this and already had lawyers working on the case that they knew was coming. This behavior from the environmental groups is no different than it has been for the past 45 years or so (since 1973). You might ask Foxman about his experience or perhaps Hosley if you can’t reach Foxman. » Letters Cont. on pg. 7 This free community newspaper exists to serve the informational needs of the community and to stimulate a robust local economy. » Letters Cont. from pg. 6 Now, if this was a 14-foot bridge on a hiking trail in the high peaks, there would never have been a word from these groups. But, in reality, what is the difference? Both are man-made structures. Both or neither are against the regulations set forth in the State Land Master Plan. Just as an aside, unless the State Land Master Plan has been amended, the use of mechanical devices in the Adirondacks on state land including wild forest and more restrictive is forbidden (i.e., no bicycles, no canoe/kayak paddles.) In my experience of 36 years of working with and against environment groups, only two never lied to me. Peter Bauer and David Gibson. Both were and, as far as I know, are totally against human use/habitation of the Adirondacks and do not pretend to be anything different. - Robert Gibson, Long Lake ■

Republicans to blame for shutdown

To the Editor: It is evident by the opinion letters in “Florida Today” that Republicans have short memories. Several opinion letters have blamed Nancy Pelosi and the newly elected Democratic ma-

jority in the House for the shutdown that started Dec. 22, 2018. The facts differ as Pelosi and the Democrats were not in office on the date the shutdown started! It was Senate Republicans that wouldn’t compromise, not Democrats. Our president enjoyed a House and Senate majority as Republicans ruled all three branches of our government for two years. It was his Republican House and Senate that denied him the $5.7 billion he demanded for the wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for, not the newly elected Democrats! Republicans should be upset with those of their own party and stop blaming others for their shortfalls. Mitch McConnell couldn’t get those in his own party to give in to Trump’s hissy fit and threat to close the government which ultimately cost more than the $5.7 billion he wanted. This president is a disgrace to the office, and McConnell isn’t far behind. I would suggest those writing opinions be truthful and put the blame for this fiasco where it belongs. As one who has fought for our country and its Constitution, I pray we will be rid of those who claim to be patriots, and then bury their heads in the sand! God Bless America, and long live our republic. - Gary Guido, Ticonderoga ■

Council needs to make decision on footbridge

To the Editor: It has been a year plus since the Plattsburgh School Board closed the Saranac footbridge. It is able to be repaired and reopened. What has been done, and what remains to be done? Sen. Betty Little has come up with state funding for $500,000 to cover the cost of repair. Assemblyman Billy Jones has secured $50,000. Much thanks Sen. Little and Assemblyman Jones. The school board currently owns the bridge because that was the only way construction was possible in 1981. Any bridge is the responsibility of a municipality, not a school district, therefore ownership of the footbridge needs to be transferred to the City of Plattsburgh.

An icy blast from the past By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

READER INPUT

I wrote about Stark’s Gold Mine last week. Lyman Stark announced to the world that he not only found pure gold nuggets in his mine, but later, he said he discovered silver, lead, iron and diamonds in abundance there. For many years, I have been trying to find out more information about this unusual man, and I have had little luck. I have been hoping that a reader of this column might donate a little more information and tell me where he is interred. In the mail, I received an unsigned note stating that Lyman Stark had two sons, William and Edward Stark. William was born in 1872 and died in 1897 of typhoid pneumonia when he was only 25 years old. The family was some time referred to as “Starks.” My son, Maclane Hadden, read the article and said that when he was a child, he could remember the abandoned shack at the foot of the mountain where Stark was said to have once camped out, and he could remember once being inside of it shortly before it was

torn down by town workmen. I can’t help but wonder if Lyman actually lies today under a proper gravestone somewhere or possibly under a boulder which might have dropped upon him in his beloved gold mine where he could have became trapped and his ghost might still possibly reside there on its journey through eternity.

GHOSTLY GRAVESTONES

I especially like gravestones that tell the story of the souls buried beneath them. In Fort Edward, in the old Union Cemetery, there is such a stone — actually a double monument. The anguished inscription reads “Sacred memento Mary Ann and Maria Gandal. The former died June 16, 1828 in her bed at night without a moments warning: aged 23 years. The latter died Sept. 24, 1828 in a fit of fever and ague without an hours warning: aged 21 years.” “Ague” is a fine old English word meaning intermittent, malarial fever marked by fits of shivering, burning and sweating. In the old days, these deaths might have been attributed to witchcraft.

WEATHER GONE MAD

On Feb. 13, 1913, a cold snap

struck here suddenly on a Monday morning after a prolonged season of comparatively warm weather. That caused the old town to shiver and produce an alarming earthquake. The disturbance lasted only a few seconds, but it was quite severe. In Third Street, called “the big turn,” a crack opened about an inch wide and several hundred feet long in the ground and the crack extended a far distance through the Warrensburgh Cemetery. The next morning, between two and three o’clock, there were three more shocks, two of which made many houses in the town rock and shake people out of their beds. Some townspeople are said to have felt that the world was coming to an end which had been predicted for some time by local preachers.

COLD, COLD DAYS

On Dec. 30, 1917, it was 58 degrees below zero in Warrensburgh and on the morning of Jan. 3, 1918, the thermometer at T.J. Smith & Son’s gristmill registered 40 degrees below. Thurman Station reported 69 below, but no one believed it. Lake Pleasant reported 60 below zero. Coal was very scarce. ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

The board will use the money above to oversee repair of the bridge. The district will turn over to the city ownership of a repaired structure good for another 20 years. The old easement for the George Angell Drive side lapsed — containing a clause that if closed for a year the bridge would be removed. The district will seek a new easement. Sitting on top of the bridge is a NYSEG natural gas pipeline. The district has agreed to facilitate the pipeline removal, granting permission to bore under the Saranac River from District Waterhouse Street property. When a new line is complete, the bridge pipeline will be removed. Possibly, repair cannot begin until the easement and pipeline issues are resolved. The board has initiated actions to reopen the footbridge. It is up to the city to accept ownership, no strings attached, once the bridge is repaired. While the mayor may be obstructionist, where is the Common Council? Previously, four councilors voted to accept ownership. Two remain on council. Two were recently elected. Two others also should take action. It is all up to the elected council! - Fred Wachtmeister, Plattsburgh ■

Big plans are in the works for Troop 6036, which currently contains seven Webelos Scouts members and five Lions. The Webelos recently created an obstacle course at Scout Hall in Baker Mills, the site of their new meeting space after relocating from the North Creek Firehouse. Youngsters designed the obstacles themselves, which they presented to leadership. This spring, troop officials are eying a three-mile snowshoe hike to be held in conjunction with Up Yonda Farm in Bolton Landing. The exact date is yet-to-be determined and is weather-dependent. The boys are fourth-graders, aged 9 and 10, and leaders are emphasizing the virtue of personal kindness. Boys are encouraged to share with leaders if they’ve had a good or bad week, with rewards, praise and encouragement given for good behavior. “We’re teaching them to be good men,” said Webelos Leader Erin Dunkley. “That’s something we definitely work on in our group.” Troop 6036 meets twice monthly, with pack meetings every month. The youngsters also recently attended an Adirondack Thunder game at the Glens Falls Civic Center. “There’s a lot of fun stuff going on in our town,” said Dunkley. More volunteers and participants are always welcome. For more information, contact Dunkley at 518-251-5969 or Committee Chair Erika Patton at 251-4558. ■

PACK 6020: LAKE GEORGE

After five years of serving the community as committee chair and cubmaster, respectively, Dawn and Greg Starratt handed the reigns of Lake George’s Cub Scout Pack 20 over to cubmaster Josh Brown last year. He’s had years of experience in a variety of Boy Scouts leadership roles, and says that the amount of time a volunteer can put into their work can dramatically improve the quality of programming for kids. Suffice to say that, after nearly a decade of involvement in Scouts, he’s dedicated to keeping the pack going strong. The pack now has 13 registered members. The kids are gearing up for the district-wide Pinewood Derby in Queensbury later this month, a competition that typically draws more than 50 scouts from all across the region. “The Pinewood Derby is one of the favorite things that the kids do,” said Brown. Before that, the scouts will go head-to-head in a local derby at the North Queensbury Fire Hall on Feb. 24. The four fastest cars, and the Best in Show model, will go forward and compete in the district competition. On Feb. 27, the pack will host a bowling fundraiser to help fund its upcoming operations this year. A variety of activities are slated: There are plans for an ice fishing expedition this month, pack hikes when the weather gets warmer, camping trips, a community service trip to Up Yonda Farm,

“It takes a very special and dedicated young man to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations to those who have, and will.”

Chestertown’s Boy Scout Troop 30 helps kids reach great heights. Literally. After two and a half years of climbing mountains and taking in some of the Adirondacks’ most scenic peaks, the highly-active troop is nearing the completion of the ADK Fire Tower Challenge. In total, the senior-most members have hiked 18 fire tower trails, some as long as eight miles round-trip, and climbed towers up to 90 feet tall. There are just four more expeditions left to finish in the Adirondacks, and one in the Catskills, before the scouts get the coveted Fire Tower Challenge finisher status. Scoutmaster Bill Jennings expects the troop to complete the challenge this summer. “The senior boys in the troop, they’ll have completed the whole thing,” Jennings said. “This is a huge accomplishment for this group.” Two of the young men also recently wrapped up their Eagle Scout projects, a labor-intensive community service requirement needed for a boy scout to reach the Eagle Scout rank. “This usually involves planning the projects, obtaining the funding and completing them,” said Jennings. The projects are meant to benefit the community at large, not just the scouts. Scout Ryan Hill designed and created a nature trail and amphitheater near the Priory Retreat House in Chestertown. Another scout, Jack Jennings, successfully opened a fitness trail behind the Chester Town Hall, complete with 10 fitness stations. The troop is always accepting new members. Those interested in joining can contact Bill Jennings, the scoutmaster, at 518-744-8394. The troop meets at North Warren School every Tuesday, and goes on a camping trip every month. ■

Pack 6031 is humming along with a flurry of activity. Two Webelos Scouts will achieve their Arrow of Light at a Blue and Gold Ceremony, the necessary milestone before graduating to Boy Scouts, on Feb. 27. One element of the five-part program is “Duty to God.” As part of their requirements, youngsters attended a Hanukkah celebration at the Temple Beth El in Glens Falls. Scouts on Tuesday wrapped up the latest component, “Scouting Adventure.” To commemorate the 109th anniversary of the establishment of the Boy Scouts of America, the boys will participate in a service at the First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg on Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. Five scouts will participate in the Regional Pinewood Derby at the Aviation Mall in Queensbury on Saturday, March 2. A spaghetti dinner is scheduled for Saturday, March 23, with proceeds going to send scouts to camp this summer.

Youngsters will also again commemorate Arbor Day this spring. Last year, youngsters planted trees at the state Department of Environmental Conservation offices on Golf Course Road. At present, 11 kids are members of Pack 6031, including two Webelos II Scouts who are crossing over to Boy Scouts. “I’m really proud of all den leaders; of the scouts’ education and their achievements,” said Chairman Kathy Templeton. “They’re really a great group of boys.” For more information or to get involved, contact Templeton at kathy.templeton37@gmail.com. ■

WarEagles win Class C team championship By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

LAKE GEORGE | Competing against 10 teams representing 14 mid-size area schools, the Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles won the team championship of the Section II Class C tournament held Feb. 2 at Corinth High School. The WarEagles won with 235.5 points, surpassing the runner-up team, Watervliet/Heatly, by 23 points. Three athletes on the WarEagles team won championships in their respective weight classes. Ten WarEagles placed first through fourth in the regional tournament, earning berths in upcoming Section II state tournament qualifiers which are set for Saturday Feb. 9 at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls. WarEagles winning their weight classes were junior Mike Fuss at 145 pounds, senior Logan Duers at 152 pounds and senior Cody York at 182 pounds. Undefeated through the 2018-19 season, York pinned each of his competitors in the Class C tourney, including Tyler Goodemote of Berne-Knox-Voorheesville, who is rated No. 2 in the region. Duers also pinned his finals opponent. Fuss won a 3-1 decision in his finals match in overtime with a takedown. Securing second place in the Class C tourney were junior Cameron Duers at 195 pounds and senior Will Mitcham at 285. Placing third were sophomore Justin Hoffman at 160 pounds and senior Gary Spotswood at 145.

In fourth place were freshman Carter McIntosh at 106 pounds, junior Colby Hoolihan at 170 and freshman Quinton

Fox — at 126 pounds — who has won 25 matches this season. Other Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George wrestlers placed in fifth place, helping their team win the team championship, coach Larry Rounds said. “I’m proud of all our wrestlers,” he said. “Every one of them contributed to the team title.” Rookie Brandon Lamby, a freshman, achieved his first varsity tournament win — and he placed fifth in his weight class — in his first appearance since being drafted from junior varsity mid-season. Coach Larry Rounds praised Lamby’s effort. “Brandon really caught fire at the end of the season,” he said. Freshman Caleb Carpenter also placed fifth in the 120pound weight class. Rounds said it was outstanding, as Carpenter weighs only 110 pounds. “Caleb has a lot of promise,” he said. Also placing fifth was seventh grader Gavin McCabe at 113 pounds. “Our younger wrestlers had tremendous achievements Saturday,” Rounds said, noting that about half of the WarEagles are ninth graders. “This gives us a lot of hope for next year.” The WarEagles’ 2019 Class C team championship was the fourth such title in the last six years. Rounds said he and his wrestlers were looking forward to Saturday’s state qualifier, and a number of them will likely advance to the state tournament. “Each week, our kids getting sharper, improving their skills,” he said. ■

WarEagles make history as they end 2018-19 regular season By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WHITEHALL | The Hadley-LuzerneLake George wrestling team closed out their 2018-19 schedule with a convincing victory, completing the most successful season ever for their wrestling program. The WarEagles win-loss tally for 2018-19 was 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the Adirondack

League — the most wins since wrestling was introduced to Hadley-Luzerne High School in 1998. On Jan. 30, the WarEagles defeated Mechanicville-Stillwater by a score of 48-32, with each of their wrestlers assisting in securing the win. Among those WarEagles giving their bouts extra effort was freshman Brandon Lamby, who experienced his first varsity win by de-

cisioning Bryan Gaze 3-2 in a tough battle. Brandon was drafted from junior varsity squad this season, but he hasn’t wrestled in varsity meets until last week because he’s been sidelined with both a broken foot and finger, coach Larry Rounds said. “Brandon is aggressive on his feet — he’s not afraid to shoot takedowns like many younger wrestlers are,” Rounds said. “When the whistle blows, he goes right at you.” Last year, Brandon won his weight class in the Adirondack League Junior Varsity tournament, Rounds continued. “As a rookie, he’s starting to figure the

sport out, but he’s wrestling really well,” he said, noting that Brandon is one of the younger wrestlers exhibiting a lot of potential, demonstrating that the WarEagles’ success is likely to extend for years. Other Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George wrestlers winning their matches against Mechanicville-Stillwater were Caleb Carpenter who defeated his competitor in a 10-5 decision at 120 pounds; Will Mitcham, who won by pinning his opponent at 285 pounds; and Gary Spotswood who also won by fall at 152 pounds. Winning by forfeit were Logan Duers, Carter McIntosh, Colby Hoolihan, Logan Marissal and Cody York. ■

Burghers capture Class D team title Eleven Wbg.-Bolton athletes earn Section II berths By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | In front of a capacity crowd in their own gymnasium, WarrensburgBolton wrestlers battled competitors from 10 other teams to earn their team a regional Class D championship by a wide margin. Five Burgher wrestlers won individual championships in the day-long tournament, and a total of 11 on the team placed in the top four in their weight class. They all earned a berth in the Section II state tournament qualifiers on Saturday Feb. 2 at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls. Coach Mark Trapasso said he was pleased with the way all his wrestlers competed. “Winning Class D was our ultimate team goal, and it’s sweet to accomplish it,” he said. “It was great to win the tournament in front of a big crowd at home with such tough competition.” The Burghers’ bouts earned 255 points for Warrensburg-Bolton, far ahead of the other teams in the competition. Whitehall-Fort Ann placed second with 171.5 points, Duanesburg placed third with 154.5 points, Granville was fourth with 145 and Salem-Cambridge was fifth with 143. Burghers winning championships in their

weight classes were seniors Nolan McNeill at 195 pounds, Chris Wilson at 220 pounds and Zack Davis at 138 pounds; sophomore Hunter McKenna at 145 pounds; and his brother freshman Tanner McKenna at 120. Recovering from an ankle injury, McNeill pinned his first two opponents. His finals match extended though two overtime periods until McNeill’s endurance clinched his third consecutive Class D championship.

Placing fourth were sophomore Robert Ranous, at 99 pounds, and junior Zach Shambo at 132 pounds. Trapasso said he was feeling good about the team’s performance. “I’m very happy about the team’s championship and the individual titles,” he said. “Now, our wrestlers are focused on winning a sectional title and wrestling in the state tournament.” He also praised the assistance he received from parents and fans in running the Class D tourney. “The volunteer help at the tournament was amazing,” he said. “It was a real community event.” ■
